While it is a fact that my life is pretty special, there are days I just want to escape. Whether it be Out West or some place far, far away, we all have a bucket list, right? Well, one of mine is to travel from place to place and check out every Diner, Drive In and Dive from Philly to San Francisco and back. There are days I am tired of Shoefly pie and Dumplings. I want to try all sorts of things, just to say I did. It is a freedom of choice. I have a fantasy of taking a month and renting a bike in Tuscany and eating my way through the Countryside. I also have dreams of Fairies taking over the bills and cleaning my house so I can be outdoors and explore. Of course this does not mean I want to camp out. Geez no! That involves too many bugs, especially here in the North East and waking up with a stiff back and not being able to ride. Heck no, I want a Feather Bed and room service instead of a sleeping bag and a camp fire. Now that makes me a happy camper. A girl can dream, right? I believe our priorities shift over the years as we get older. We just want to do, what we want to do instead of what everyone else wants us to do. OK…this is a fantasy, but I think this is why we like to ride. It makes us feel just a little closer to the fantasy. It is where the Reality World around us just disappears and for that hour, a day or week, the world is our Oyster and we are free. No one can ever take our thoughts and dreams from us, no matter what. Get out there and live your Fantasy! Riding Thru Under the wheels, Under my feet, Pass mile upon mile Of old fields of wheat. 2nd Lt Carol Ann Drazba RN Memorial Building Fund It is with great pride that the Friends of the Forgotten NE Pa. Wing will honor 2nd LT Carol Ann Drazba RN by establishing a Memorial building fund in her name. All interested groups are encouraged to run their own fundraiser and forward your proceeds to the Memorial Fund established in her name. Our sole purpose as Friends of the Forgotten is to promote and provide for and insure that no Veteran past, present or future will ever again be forgotten or mistreated as the past generations of soldiers were. We have found in our research of Carol Ann Drazba, the first Nurse & Woman killed in the Vietnam War, that there is no real reminder or monument in her memory. Her Sacrifice needs to be told and preserved for future generations. We wish to correct this; we will raise the funds erect & dedicate a monument to forever commemorate the sacrifice given by this unique and unselfish Soldier & Nurse. This is the least we can do to preserve her memory and ensure that future generations will come to know of her sacrifice and dedication. She is Dunmore’s true American Hero and her memory must be preserved for future generations. There are only 8 Women’s names on the Vietnam Wall in Washington, D.C. Carol Ann was one of two women who died that day! They were the first women to die in the Vietnam War. Carol Ann was listed as first. She needs to be recognized as the historic figure that she truly is! All Groups, Veterans, Medical Colleges, Hospital Nurses, Universities and Nursing Programs, & Military Branches are encouraged to give this American Patriot their undivided attention. As a Battlefield Nurse in Saigon, Carol Ann saw more carnage than most Soldiers saw on any of their tours of duty. Our Mission is Two fold; 1-to erect a Monument in her Hometown of Dunmore, Pa. to honor her commitment as a Nurse & Veteran & have her recognized as the true historic figure that she is; & 2- To obtain the recognition she so very well deserves, She must be entitled to a Purple Heart!- Although she is listed as Non Combat related Death; Dear Sirs, the mental anguish and Trauma of caring for Veterans ravaged by the Vietnam War surely qualifies her as a true Casualty of war and because of the circumstances her status should include the Purple Heart that she so very well Deserves! Noodle’s Tips For The Road Dudes…grease your kick stands! If the kick stand gets stuck , you will lay your bike over. Do you know how gay that looks? Seriously guys---gals are exempt, because….well…you are gals. Guys…you ride a motorcycle, you probably have a tat or two and you are manly, right? I have heard, (when they let me hang out), that if you do lay your bike over, the best excuse is that your kick stand needs greased, Otherwise you look like a tulip. Enough said! Until next month, keep your nose in the wind and your furry side up! Wag more &Bark less, and Please don’t be a Tulip!!!

First Rides
I think I am stealing this “First Rides” idea from my AMA magazine, but I am not that creative and it sounded good so hear it goes. Who doesn’t love the first ride of the season? It doesn’t always have as much to do with the actual ride as it does knowing the season is here. For me my fist ride is usually cold, you have to be on the look out for the potholes caused by break up, and a whole winters worth of gravel left behind by the sanding trucks. Still, I am finally going down the road again on two wheels listening to the engine as I run through the gears. This year my First Ride ranks as one of the best rides I have ever taken. There were a lot of firsts for me on this trip and I don’t mean that in a homosexual way. It was the first time I had ever ridden with my brother Kraig and my brother of another mother Jake. My step dad Tom and I had taken a few short rides together before, which brings me to another first, I had never been on a trip that lasted more than a weekend. Another member of the group whom I know well but had never ridden with was my Uncle Christy. The rest of the group I had never ridden with nor did I know real well were Glenn, Uncle Jeff, and Dale. Now if you have been keeping track that is 8 guys of varying age, varying riding experience, not everyone knows each other real well, one of the guys my brother beat up once, all going on an eight day ride together. We had a list of sites to see and roads to take, but the itinerary was being made up as we went. The thought, this could be a disaster, had crossed my mind. Luckily nothing could have been further from the truth.

We headed south through Roanoke to Horse Pasture VA and west on 58. West 58 was just some road we picked on the map that turned out to be a great ride twisting and turning through the country. We continued on to Gatlinburg TN and rode through the Smokey Mountain National Park and over to the Cherohala Skyway. This whole area was great. A guy could spend a whole week there and not get tired of it. It would be an awesome trip in the fall when the leaves change color. Next we headed east through Asheville and around Charlotte NC. Along the way we ate some great BBQ. We continued

on to Topsail Beach to get Kraig and headed South to Myrtle Beach and Merrils Inlet. Somehow we ended up in Merrils Inlet several times. It is a great place to eat seafood. We came back up to PA via the Delaware Bay Bridge, another first for me. As I am sure you can tell this is a short outline of our trip. I considered adding more details of the laughs and tomfoolery that took place, but thought it best to follow the wisdom of Pop Lapp, and I quote “What happens across the river stays across the river”. This way the guilty and the innocent are protected.
Emma Rose And Billy Emma is an inspirational 6-year-old girl who has already touched so many lives. She was bom with multiple disabilities, including ACC (agenesis corpus callosum); epilepsy; cerebral palsy; hip dysphasia; hydrocephalus; and global developmental delay. ACC means that she is mussing the center structure in her brain that helps the right and left hemispheres communicate. She has already undergone 4 surgeries. Despite the difficulties she faces such as the side effects of her 3 anti-convulsante, she continues to smile and laugh and dance everyday. Unfortunately, she also continues to have seizures daily. We were recently introduced to Linzey Xoccoia, director of Phoenix Assistance Dogs of Central PA, who has accepted Emma into their Owner Trained Assistance Dog Program. This is an amazing opportunity for Emma; and will be a hugely beneficial part of her development and safety. Emma’s assistance dog, Billy, will alert to oncoming seizures by indicating to her caretaker that a seizure is about to occur, and follow up by remaining at Emma’s side until she is safely through her seizure. In addition. Billy will hold imperative medical information in her working harness for EMS, and any medications that are to be taken after a seizure. Emma’s assistance dog will also stabilize her gait as she perfects the ability to walk. However, the cost of training an assistance dog is approximately $15,000. We are in great need of financial help, so we are requesting donations from our community. Please know that all proceeds are used exclusively for the training and care of Emma’s assistance dog. Cory TexTer Hey Everyone, It’s been a couple of months since I wrote a column. A lot of you know that I got injured on March 21st at a local race in Hanover, PA called Trail-Ways Speedway. The track has been around for a very long time. I raced my first ever race there on a 50cc back in 1991 at 4 years old. It typically hasn’t been one of my favorite tracks, but I still can battle for a win when I go there no matter who shows up, I always feel competitive to win. It was the first heat race of the day and I was lined up on my Lancaster HD/Herr’s/Invisible Glass RM-Z 450. I was struggling getting the bike set-up all day and the suspension felt very weird all day but the bike was hooked up. I had Jake Johnson, Raun Wood & some other dudes in my heat race and I was starting on the inside pole. I was confident I could win this one but I knew Jake & Raun would be tough as they always are and I jumped the light for the first time in my career. Dang nabbit. I was so bummed out that I broke my track record of never jumping, well at least never getting caught for it. The worst part of it was, my bike hooked up so good off the line, I think I would of holeshotted no matter what so it made it look even worse! Lined back up on the 3rd row and im thinking, damn I am pretty far back here huh? There were about 8 riders and in 6 laps they were only taking 3. I put myself right in the mix on the first lap and slowly started picking people off. Coming to the white flag, I was up to 4th right on 3rd place. I stuffed into under the rider in 3rd going into one, but he shut the door pretty hard, so I knew I had to act quick so I jumped on my back fender and ran it up underneath him coming off two. Either he forgot to turn the gas on or he hit a patch of ice, because he didn’t go anywhere. I ran into him and highsided off my bike. I hit the ground pretty hard. At first I thought I broke my neck because my Leatt Brace slammed into my neck. I checked my neck and I was like ok cool im good to go, now where is my motorcycle at? I pushed my arms onto the ground and quick shot up off the track and started walking to my motorcycle when someone said “your arm!, your arm!”. I looked down and my arm was pretty much crushed and twisted. I motioned for the ambulance to crank up the vehicle and I sat down and tried to take off my glove. I sat down on the track and started thinking about all the races I was going to miss because of this. They loaded me up in the ambulance and took me for the most painful ambulance ride ever. Every bump we hit, I felt like chewing on a piece of glass. At the hospital we sat around for two hours before they would give me any medicine, not even an advil. After giving me some medicine, they set my bones back in place which let me tell you was a very weird/painful feeling. I headed back to the track but I don’t really remember being there, Ha ha. I was still on some good pain meds, but I remember my buddy Jake Johnson pulling a 2nd row holeshot in the main event, but I couldn’t tell you if he won or not. I ended up breaking my ulna, radius & one of my carpal bones. I dislocated my ulna and I also damaged the other 8 carpal bones in my wrist and had ligament, tendon & cartilage damage in my left arm. They put a plate in my arm April 1st & casted me on April 14th. I am hoping to be back in action May 29th in Springfield, Illinois at our biggest race of the year, the Springfield Mile which is usually televised on Speed Channel. I have been pretty bummed to miss alot of riding time and our

first twins national in Arizona. I had an up and down Daytona, but I am very confident for the season and with my speed and I have been working side by side with some great companies since Daytona to strengthen my 450 & 750 program. I want to thank Mike from Penske for working with me daily on my CRF suspension & long time friend Steve Beattie on my RM-Z 450. I am excited to start testing the equipment but from previous testing of their suspension on other peoples bikes, I am looking for huge leaps and gains in my program. Since I got hurt, I have been hanging out with my family some, working on my race bikes, and training at the gym. It was pretty funny to see peoples reactions at the gym when I went in for the first time with a cast, but they see me in there everyday so their use to it now. I also have been working in the service department at my fathers shop, Lancaster HarleyDavidson, so stop in sometime during the week and say hello as I will be in there most of the time until I ship out this summer for the race season where I will be working my tail off to put my bikes up front that everyone including my dad & sponsors have worked so hard on. ABATE Update
ABATE of PA Bills Update: HB-590- Red light bill HB1189- Landowner protection for those who allow their property to be used for MSP training Both bills have been filed with various amendments that we are trying to have removed, in an effort to have these bills run with no amendments. The Representatives who offered these amendments have been contacted and asked to remove them, we are waiting for their replies or actions. HB-2070 - texting/ cell phone bill is sitting in the Senate waiting for second consideration. We now have a bill number for the legislation that deals with conversion kits that add an extra 2 wheels to the rear of a motorcycle, to help with stability. It is HB-2442; we have gained 120 co-sponsors on this bill out of a total of 203 Representatives. Unheard of 120 sponsors on a bill. Abate of PA had a Lobby Day, in April at the Capitol to get support for these bills To learn more about these issues and others that ABATE of PA is working on, check out our web site at abatepa.org, or come to a chapter meeting in your area. CALMNESS IN OUR LIVES
I am passing this on to you because it definitely works and we could all use a little more calmness in our lives. By following simple advice heard on the Oprah show, you too can find inner peace. Dr. Oz proclaimed, “The way to achieve inner peace is to finish all the things you have started and have never finished.” So, I looked around my house to see all the things I’d started and hadn’t finished, and before leaving the house this morning, I finished off a bag of potato chips, a package of peanut M&Ms, the remainder of an old Zoloft prescription, the rest of the cheesecake, some Doritos, a box of chocolates and the rest of my birthday cake. You have no idea how good I feel right now. Pass this on if you know anyone you think might be in need of inner peace. It really works!
KEEP IT SIMPLE SHEPHERD’S PIE original recipe by: Toni McCoy 1-1/2 lbs ground round beef (not ground Chuck, ground Round) 1 onion chopped in large chop (or get pre-chopped onion @ store) 1 Bag of Frozen Mixed Veggies; Thawed 1 Box of Instant Mashed Potatoes; *IDAHO SPUDS brand 1 Tub of Sour Cream 1 Stick of Butter; Divided, or I.C.B.I.N.B. (I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter) Margarine 1/2 cup Beef Broth 1 Tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce 1 Bag of Finely Shredded Cheddar Cheese Salt & Pepper to Taste Make the instant mashed potatoes first. Go ahead and use a large stock pot and make the entire box. Be sure and add ½ stick of butter (or 2 heaping Tablespoons of ICBINB) to potatoes, add tub of sour cream & salt & pepper to taste. Next, take ¼ pat of butter or 1 Tablespoon of ICBINB to first saute’ your onion in skillet and once onion is done and skillet is hot, move onions off to side & go ahead and drop your ground beef in. Don’t move it around. Let it start cooking then break it up into larger chunks with wooden spoon. Salt & Pepper to taste. Add Garlic Powder if want & dash of Nutmeg. Again, you want the meat to carmelize and get good and browned. You don’t really have to drain it as Ground Round renders hardly any grease, but if you want, drain, then return to skillet, add Tablespoon of Worsteshire Sauce, ½ cup Beef Broth and Bag of Frozen Veggies. Spray a 9x13 glass baking dish with cooking spray. Layer just a 1/4 inch high of mashed potatoes as your starter layer, then use all your ground round beef mixture as your full second layer. Next, layer your Cheddar cheese thuroughly on top of beef layer, then layer your mashed potatoes up on top and take a fork and dab at the potatoes to form little peaks that will brown off as it bakes. Cook in 400 degree oven until bubbling and brown (about 30 minutes). Delicious! Bake up some super crusty, hot French bread & serve w/ honey butter.
EASY PLEASING SUNFLOWER PEAR TART 1 Can (24 ozs.) Bartlett Pears; Halved is Easier 2 Pkgs. of French Vanilla Pudding Mix Milk 1/4 Cup of Almond Extract or *Almond-Flavor Liqueur can be substituted 1 (8-inch) Pastry Shell, Baked & Cooled Apricot Glaze *(Follow Recipe Below) Drain pears;p reserve 1 up of liquid from can. Prepare pudding according to directions, substituting reserved pear l iquid for part of milk; stir in almond extract or liqueur. Pour into pastry shell; chill until puddig set. Slice your pear halves in half and arrange all around the pastry shell, slightly overlapping each other until it looks exactly like a giant sunflower, complete with bright yellow center. It’s beautiful to look at and even better to eat! Sounds familiar, huh ladies? APRICOT GLAZE: Heat 1/2 cup of apricot or peach preserves and 1 tablespoon almond-flavor liqueur or pear liquid. Press through a sieve or cheese cloth and discard pulp. If you like pulp, then don’t bother. Some people, myself included, love the pulp of anything, especially fiction. Pour hot glaze all over your beautiful Sunflower Pear Tart (just the pears, not the center). You’re going to be making this all the time it’s that dang simple and double-danged good! RAZZLE-BERRY MINT COOLER 1 to 2 Cups of Fresh Mint Leaves 5 Cups *Dole Pineapple Juice, chilled 2 Cups *Dole Frozen Raspberries 1 Can (6 ozs.) News Bytes MOTORCYCLIST FATALITIES INEXPLICABLY PLUMMET Following more than a decade of steady increases, motorcycle rider fatalities unaccountably dipped by double-digit proportions last year. Motorcyclist deaths dropped by 16% nationwide through the first three quarters of 2009, compared to the same period in 2008 when fatalities reached their highest level of 5,290. The study -- sponsored by the Governors Highway Safety Association, which represents state traffic safety agencies -- is drawn from preliminary fatality data from all 50 states and the District of Columbia. While there is nothing in the data to indicate the cause of the sudden decline, the GHSA asked state safety agencies to speculate on reasons for the decline, and several respondents pointed to the economy and underscored that a significant portion of motorcycling is for recreation rather than transportation. Other reasons cited in the study for the decline: Fewer beginning motorcyclists; an increase in priority given to state motorcycle safety programs; an increased awareness of motorcycles by other drivers; and colder, wetter weather in some states during the riding season. It doesn’t appear helmet laws played a significant role in the decline. The popularity of motorcycles has surged in the past decade, particularly among aging baby boomers and women, nearly doubling to more than 10 million. During the nine-month period of the comparison, the District and 38 states reported a drop in motorcycle deaths, and 12 states recorded an increase. California had 133 fewer deaths, Florida had 111 fewer and Ohio had 48 fewer. Only two states -- Hawaii and Rhode Island -- had double-digit increases. Once numbers for the final three months of 2009 are factored in, the report projects, the annual fatality decline will be at least 10%. AGING RIDERS AT HIGHER RISK Motorcycle riders across the country are growing older, and the impact of this trend is evident in emergency rooms nationwide as doctors are finding that senior citizens who ride motorcycles are more likely to be involved in accidents and also more likely to be injured or die than their younger counterparts. Researchers at the University of Rochester Medical Center found that half of all motorcyclists needing emergency treatment in 2005 were over 40, nearly double the number in 1996, which is consistent with demographic data indicating that the average age of motorcycle ownership has rose from 33 years in 1998 to 40 years in 2003. Injury severity, length of stay in the hospital or intensive care unit, and mortality were higher for riders over the age of 40. In the study, which was published in the March issue of the American Surgeon, researchers using the National Trauma Databank reviewed the records of 61,689 motorcyclists aged 17 to 89 years involved in a motorcycle crash between 1996 and 2005. Those ages 50-59 were the fastest grow-
ing group involved with crashes, and accidents involving riders in that age group were almost twice as likely to be fatal as those involving younger bikers. “Treating a 60-year-old who has been in a motorcycle accident is very different from treating a 21-year-old who has been in a similar accident -- 60-year-olds bring a lot more medical baggage with them and impact outcomes,” Dr. Mark Gestring, director of the trauma program at the Medical Center. Age-related factors associated with aging, such as impaired vision, delayed reaction time, and altered balance contribute to motorcycle crashes in this population. The increase in injury severity for older riders may be related to the reduced capacity to withstand injury as the body ages, including decreases in bone strength and brain size, as well as pre-existing medical conditions. NATURALISTIC MOTORCYCLE SAFETY STUDY The Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) has announced that it will partner with the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI) on the world’s first motorcycle safety study that will use small video recorders and instrumentation mounted on numerous bikes for 6-18 months to gather data about the riders and events that occur. Termed a “naturalistic” study, VTTI has developed this technology and used it successfully to conduct a 100-car study in 2005 that included 69 crashes and more than 750 near-crashes. According to the MSF, “The method is presently in use by researchers across the globe to target nearly every type of roadway user, with the exception of two-wheeled vehicles. This study, expected to be on the road by early 2011, will greatly advance the understanding of interactions among rider, motorcycle, roadway, other roadway users and the environment.” VTTI Director Tom Dingus added that “We expect the study to be very valuable to the Motorcycle Safety Foundation’s work, since we also will examine where and how crash avoidance is successful. With so much information bandwidth coming from the cameras and instrumentation on each bike, we’ll be able to examine details for years, and the findings will be relevant for decades.” Naturalistic Method identifies crashes using time-series video and numeric data, reveals factors not detectable through crash investigation, creates its own controls by comparing the crash-involved rider to himself/herself at all other times, and permits quantification of rider performance and behavior in non-critical and critical riding situations. PATRIOT GUARD RIDERS BARRED FROM MINERS MEMORIAL Many of the 29 West Virginia coal miners who died at the Upper Big Branch mining explosion on April 5th were veterans and some rode motorcycles, so bereaved families had requested the Patriot Guard Riders to attend
News Bytes the memorial service. PGR is an informal group of motorcyclists which exists to make sure that all veterans are given respectful funerals. But they were barred from attending this service by federal officials who labeled them a security threat. The appearance of the Patriot Guard Riders at the service, at the request of several families, had been cleared in advance by West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin, who is also a motorcycle rider. But the day before the service, Joe Cumblidge, the West Virginia State Captain of the Patriot Guard Riders e-mailed the men who were scheduled to participate: “Due to circumstances totally and completely beyond the control of the Patriot Guard Riders and Governor Joe Manchin of West Virginia, we are regrettably ordering a STAND DOWN for this mission. Specific details will not be posted here but, we’ve been told we are not welcome to participate because of certain high-level dignitaries that are scheduled to be in attendance.” The “high-level dignitaries” were President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden. A Patriot Guard Rider told WSAZ in Charleston that Manchin had been forbidden to allow them to participate “because of overwhelming security concerns with highranking federal officials -- it was just not logistically possible for them to be a part of the event.” Both Obama and Biden managed to escape West Virginia unharmed.
ANGRY FRENCH MOTORCYCLISTS SNARL TRAFFIC IN PROTEST Forty thousand motorcyclists demonstrated all over France in protest of a recent Government announcement to fine any bikers caught filtering through traffic (“lane splitting”), and more than 60 cities saw their roads blocked by hordes of angry riders who said NON to French authorities who propose to treat motorbikes, scooters and mopeds like cars and require them to stay in their lane one behind another. So, they behaved like cars. On March 13th the La Fédération Française Des Motards en Colère (FFMC - the French Federation of Angry Bikers) urged all motorcyclists to occupy the space of one car in each lane, and within minutes an enormous traffic jam was created that gridlocked the whole of Paris on a busy Saturday afternoon as car drivers were stuck in traffic until late in the evening. While bikers blocked the roadways above ground, other protestors went underground bringing the subway system to a grinding halt in response to a statement made by French Transport Secretary Jean-Marc Belotti, who said “If they (bikers) are not happy, they can take the metro like everyone else.” They inconvenience us, we will inconvenience them, responded the FFMC, which set a fine example of civil obedience to demonstrate the impact of motorcycles on traffic flow, good or bad.
LEGAL CHALLENGES TO MICHIGAN HELMET LAW Several members of ABATE of Michigan rode to the Lenawee County judicial building on Tuesday, April 20th to show support for a fellow motorcyclist who is challenging a non-compliant helmet ticket. Ryan Hildebrand, 26, is one of nearly a dozen riders ticketed this spring by Adrian police Sgt. Lynn Courington for wearing helmets that the state claims do not meet federal Department of Transportation standards. Representing the group of ticketed riders is Aid to Injured Motorcyclists (A.I.M.) attorney Lawrence “Katman” Katkowsky, who filed an appearance for the helmet defendant. A formal hearing was set for June 29 in district court, and Katkowsky said he will try to consolidate all the helmet infraction cases that are being challenged for the June 29 hearing. “The issues are all the same,” he said. He is taking on the helmet enforcement issue in Lenawee County on behalf of ABATE of Michigan, which also has a lawsuit pending in United State District Court in Grand Rapids, challenging the state’s DOT helmet rule. One of the enforcement issues Katkowsky will raise is regarding probable cause to justify a traffic stop on a civil infraction. ABATE claims in the lawsuit that police have to look inside a helmet to determine if it meets DOT standards, and therefore cannot claim plain sight evidence to justify a traffic stop and request to inspect a helmet. No trial date is scheduled.
WEIRD NEWS: EASY WRITERS TEXT WHILE RIDING Everyone knows that texting while driving can be dangerous. Now consider this: texting while riding a motorcycle, in heavy traffic! It’s not uncommon in Vietnam, where 29 million motorcycles are the primary source of transportation. Pham Thi Thuy Linh is 21, a college student and -- according to a recent contest sponsored by a mobile phone company -- has the fastest fingers in Vietnam. She can text 160 characters in 25 seconds, though she admits she is “about 20 or 30 percent slower texting on my bike.” She doesn’t much care that texting while driving is both illegal and not too smart. Tran Van Thanh is a senior official in the government’s office of traffic safety. He told National Public Radio that understands the concerns about texting while driving, but says peoples’ bad habits will take time to change, and with limited resources it’s impossible to crack down on everyone for everything. Meanwhile, contest-winner Pham says she can’t wait to get one of the new iPhone packages. She says it will enable her to text even faster than she does now, from everywhere -- including her bike. Brandon Lee Robinson Well it’s sure great to be back racing the Grand National circuit after having a couple month break. It was the first twins national of the year and I was pretty anxious to get out there and have some fun. The twin’s series is my primary focus this year because I will not be competing on any TT tracks this year due to the condition of my leg. Unfortunately my leg was not my only physical problem this weekend as I had a crash a few weeks ago at a local race and had a concussion and broke a couple of ribs. Lady luck just doesn’t ever seem to be on my side. Anyways I was a bit nervous this weekend because we were racing on a new track and nobody had a clue about what the track conditions were. Upon arrival the track was super hard packed, like concrete, and seemed like it was going to groove up. We actually got four rounds of practice since there was a lack of riders and every time we hit the track turns 1 & 2 seemed to get worse and turns 3 & 4 got better. At the end of practice I was sitting 13th place overall. I didn’t think that was too bad considering the discomfort I was riding with and that I was using my half mile bike. My mile bikes were both not 100% so I chose to ride my half mile bike to make sure my mile bikes were ready for Springfield at the end of the month. Despite that I felt like my Lancaster H-D XR 750 was running pretty solid and my mechanic Jim Varnes did a good job on the set up. In the heat race I got off the line in 4th place. By the second lap I somehow managed to work my way up to the 2nd spot. I held that position for a few laps as I was watching Sammy Halbert start to vanish. Joe Kopp blew by me down the straight away about half way through the heat and then a couple laps later Luke Gough got around me. I still managed to hold onto 4th place and a direct transfer to the main event. For the main event I started on the second row right in the middle. I got an ok start and the next thing I know I was in a dust storm and couldn’t see a darn thing.
The red flag actually came out because of the dust as a safety concern, good move AMA/DMG. On the restart I got a real bad start and again I was in the cloud of dust. Although the dust wasn’t as bad, it was still hard to see. I maintained a comfortable pace through the dust and ended up having a race long battle with Aaron King. I would actually pull up to his rear wheel through the turns and then he would lose me down the straights with his non Harley acceleration. I had no idea what position I was in and at the end of the race I wound up in 13th place. It wasn’t great, but it could have been worse. Honestly I was just happy to make the main this weekend and come away with some points heading to Springfield with the way my body felt. I’m looking forward to the next GNC and hopefully my body will be at or close to 100%. As always I would just like to send a shout

A gynecologist had become fed up with malpractice insurance and HMO paperwork, and was burned out. Hoping to try another career where skillful hands would be beneficial, he decided to become a mechanic. He went to the local technical college, signed up for evening classes, attended diligently, and learned all he could.When the time of the practical exam approached, the gynecologist prepared carefully for weeks, and completed the exam with tremendous skill. When the results came back, he was surprised to find that he had obtained a score of 150%. Fearing an error, he called the Instructor, saying, “I don’t want to appear ungrateful for such an outstanding result, but I wonder if there is an error in the grade?” “The instructor said, “During the exam, you took the engine apart perfectly, which was worth 50% of the total mark. You put the engine back together again perfectly, which is also worth 50% of the mark.” After a pause, the instructor added, “I gave you an extra 50% because you did it all through the muffler, which I’ve never seen done in my entire career”. A little old lady from Wisconsin had worked in and around her family dairy farm since she was old enough to walk, with hours of hard work and little compensation. Mission Report; NEPA 4/23/2010 Welcome Home SeaBee Anthony Wren! Friends, mission reports are never easy to write. Yes, it is supposed to be simply a matter of who, where, when, why, how...like a good journalist would do. Be we are not journalists, not unbiased reporters. We get “emotionally involved” in our writing, because as Patriots who love, honor, and respect those who serve out country, we should! I’ll start this report with the announcement of the mission, as written by Amy, Founder of Rolling Angels for Armed Forces. We have Navy SeaBee EO2 SCW Anthony Wren, son of Richard Wren, coming in to Avoca on Friday April 23 Arriving at 12:30pm, we ask that all riders/ patriots be at the airport by noon. He is with the NMCB74, was stationed at Camp Leatherneck Afghanistan as he worked on all FOB Units while deployed expanding all units for troop surges. He is presently in Kuwait and anxious to get home! His father personally asked that we make sure “Joe Public” sees him come home, “keep these men and women fresh in the minds of all, so they don’t forget”! Today, Navy SeaBee EO2 SCW Anthony Wren arrived at the Wilkes Barre/ Scranton International Airport to be greeted by grateful American Patriots, perhaps fifty in number. Family, friends, and like most of us, those who did not know him, but honored him as a brother, a son, an American Hero. Northeast Pennsylvania was represented today by members of so many organizations, this is why it is hard to write a report! To name all, omit no one! We saw Soldiers’ Angels, Rolling Angels for Armed Forces, American Legion Riders, Friends of the Forgotten, and of course Warriors’ Watch Riders. We saw individuals, unaffiliated with any group. We saw bystanders, caught up in the excitement.As SeaBee Wren came down the ramp, a cheer went up, flags were flying, and he was soon inundated with hugs and mugs from well-wishers, all thankful to see one more young American, home again. After all of the excitement inside the airport, everyone proceeded outside, where a motorcade of thirty to forty flagged motorcycles waited, to escort
him to his home in Wilkes Barre, PA. Many non-riding Patriots joined in cars and trucks. The escort led us about ten miles on Interstate 81, at a speed slightly slower than most of the traffic. This allowed the traffic to pass us, and become aware that the reason for this motorcade was a Hero’s Homecoming. As we left the interstate and proceeded through the city of Wilkes Barre, to the home of SeaBee Wren, it was obvious that his neighbors were aware of this event. The school across the street had the student population out on the sidewalk to cheer! Houses flew flags! Their Hometown Hero was home! At the family home, pizza, wings, sodas were waiting, as were family, friends and neighbors. Anthony Wren is home for a relatively short, but well-deserved break. He expects to be deployed again in a month, for an eight-month tour in Spain. But, today, he is home...Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania, USA! Much gratitude goes to Rolling Angels for Armed Forces for arranging this mission and inviting us to participate, to Warriors’ Watch Riders Northeast PA Assistant State Coordinators Curt Heitmeyer and Dave Corby for their contacts with Pennsylvania State Police, and Dave’s leadership through the city streets, to Soldiers’ Angels Support for their support, to Friends of the Forgotten, American Legion Riders, and all others who attended today. We even had some very special guests...WWR founder Wayne “Gazeebo” Lutz, National Coordinator Tony “T” Fialkowski...and two others....oh, yes! A Senator and Vice President of the US happened to be at the airport. We did not see them, nor did they see us, but but if they did, they would have seen a piece of the America...the Patriotism that they have been elected to serve! Tech Tips Harley Hop-Up by Kirby Apathy
This month we’ll go over checking your heads & setting up for larger cams. From the calls we’re getting, a lot of riders are doing this now (really should be a winter job, but whatever).First make sure the cam will compliment your present build or the build you are planning. We are not getting into that now, but feel free to call and we’ll help you pick a cam that`ll work with your compression and riding style. Installing a big cam and not checking ALL clearances can have catastrophic results if not properly clearanced. First you want to check for coiled bind, this is when the cam is trying to open valve more than your springs will allow, and the spring compresses all the way, and still has more to go. This will result in a broken spring or rocker arm. To check this, get 2 flat pieces of metal and compress spring(with collars) in a vise, close vise until spring is all the way compressed without forcing it (pic 1).Measure that, for this example, we are using SE EVO heads & springs & a S&S .561 cam. The coil bind measurement on these springs is 1.159,add the cam lift (.561)and your desired clearance(.060) for a total of 1.780.Now insert valve in guide with top & bottom collars, no spring, and pull valve up against seat, measure the distance between collars (pic 2),it has to be 1.780 or greater, if it ALOT more, you can use spring shims to get closer to your desired installed height. Next, will be checking valve to valve. To check this you must look on your cams spec sheet for the TDC lift, on our cam, its .252 int/.210 ext. insert both valves in head, and pull up so their on the seats, take a majic marker and mark each valve with the TDC lift (pic 3)leaving the old seal on will help to hold the valves without slipping, open the valves to the TDC marks and measure clearance between valve heads (pic 4),your looking for .060 minimum. Now valve to piston must be checked, with the valves still opened to your TDC lifts, put a straight edge across the head gasket surface (pic 5),if the valves are not protruding beyond that you most likely wont have a problem with most pistons, but still should be checked. To do this, open each valve to TDC lift + .060(no springs, just seal holding valves),put head on cylinder with out a head gasket, no head bolts and crank motor slowly by hand, if neither valve makes contact you fine,if contact is made, check it with a gasket, if contact is still made valve will close a little, measure to your TDC mark and that’s the amount that valve will either have to be sunk deeper in the seat or piston valve relief will have to be machined, some builders will check this with clay and springs on, we’ve seen people actually bend valves doing it this way. These are the tools you will need to check this stuff (pic 6)We and most shops will use special tools to check these clearances(pic 7),but this is a very accurate way for the home builder to make the proper checks, and these methods will work with any HD heads. If you have any question, feel free to contact us.

MDA Ride The MDA parade was started early Saturday morning at VF Outlets with hundreds of motorcycles with happy MDA kids on board which rode through Reading, Pa., countryside to the East Penn Deka Battery Plant where hundreds were waiting and cheering. There were numerous activities such as bingo, root beer floats, kids face painting, the Pink My Ride competition which the kids absolutely love, and a silent auction. There was great food and music was provided by Scott Marshall Band. Bubba Blackwell, stunt performer and motorcycle jumping world record holder performed to the delight of the crowd, There were also bike games for all to participate in. The evening proceeded with the Riders Appreciation Party at the Sovereign Center in downtownReading. It began with a dinner accompanied by music by Smokin’ Gunnz who really entertained the crowd who danced all night long. Artist Michael Israel performed his canvas magic to a large audience. The festivities began with MDA National past Chairman Luke Christie and 2010 new National Goodwill Ambassador Abbey Umali. Abbey sang America the Beautiful which was really a special moment for all. She’s a great kid. They all are. Abbey asked Matt Levatich, President of Harley-Davidson in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, “I understand this is your first Ride for Life. What do you think about It?” Matt Levatich said, “You all deserve a tremendous amount of credit for what you do. It’s truly an inspiration to get to know these kids and for me to come to this event. You know Harley-Davidson has been supporting MDA for 30 years and we’ve raised as a family through our supporters over $70 million dollars for MDA. So you need to give yourselves a hand because we as a company only take a fraction of the credit. The dealers, especially the Eastern Dealers Association, but more importantly the riders worldwide are the ones who raise the money to help those kids. So give yourselves a huge round of applause for what you do here to help MDA. Thank you.” Luke Christie asked Rider Insurance - what keeps bringing you back? Rider Insurance said, “You bring us back. It’s the support that Pennsylvania has given us, the dealers and all the customers, giving us the opportunity to give them a quote and because of that we’re able to give a break to the community and we’re really proud to be back here a second year. Thank you.” Dan Federolf, spokesman for East Penn Manufacturing Company (Deka Battery) said “We’ve been involved with Ride for Life for 11 years and we’re just so happy for you to come to East Penn. We like being involved with MDA and love giving back to the kids. It’s all about giving back. The owner of the company is such a great guy. Thank you all for what you do. What we do is really small compared to the amount of effort you put in to raising money to help all of the kids. Thank you.” Abbey Umali has been to a lot of Harley events but nothing compares to this. “it’s totally awesome. Tonight is dedicated to all the participants, the speakers and the sponsors who took part in the Ride for Life. Everyone in this room is a true hero in my book.” “Luke Christie said “All our funds raised by our MDA Ride for Life Charities just brings us closer to victory for Jerry Lewis’ dreams. Vince Snyder of Snapworks Studio has graciously offered to help us all out, by giving some basic tips on how to capture a favored event that you will be proud to show your friends and family. Let us know if you find this helpful or maybe what you would like a tip on. ~Bubba For many people a trip to Daytona Bike Week, Laconia or Sturgis is a once in a lifetime experience. Many times I have been shown pictures that were not very good (blurry, out of focus or heads cut off). Don’t you want to have pictures that match the memories of your experience? One of the most common mistakes that people make in photography is not paying attention to the background of the photo they are taking. By this I mean simple things like make sure the tree behind your subject isn’t exactly behind them. It can look like they have a tree growing out of the top of their head. Always take a good look past the subject you’re shooting and look what is behind it, because it will be the setting of the image. If you are shooting your motorcycle in your driveway for example, you want to make sure that your not shooting your neighbors messy garage with the door open as your background. If your neighbor (whom you may or may not like) is out cutting his lawn, again not something you may want too have as the background of your shot. Another important part of the shot is time of day you do the photo. Mid-day the sun is in the highest point and at its strongest. This will give you harsh shadows and a lot more glare from the chrome and to make any model squint. I always prefer to shoot either early morning or closer to dusk. If you are shooting mid-day try to find yourself a pretty heavily shaded area. Now if you’re standing in the sunny area shooting into the shade you will have some issues with glare. Also if you are shooting from the shaded area into the bright sun your photo will be backlit. Backlit is when your subject is almost a silhouette. The bright sun behind the subject will over power the subject in the shade making them dark with a very bright background. So again trying to find an area that is largely shaded can be a good thing. Overcast days are your friend in photography! I am not saying a rainy day just a cloudy day. You will find that overcast days are great for shooting any photo. Because of the overcast you will not have harsh shadows and your subject (if your shooting a person) will not be squinting. You can use your flash to make the subject stand out a little better from the softer tones of no direct sun. When all the planets line up and I get an overcast day to shoot that is a good day for me. Spend a few moments to pre-plan your photo. Do you have a nice park, lake or historic place close by that would look a lot better in the image? Good luck and see you next month! ~Vince

BIKER DAVE With the weather getting nicer and the riding season flying by. I have challenged myself once again to fine places and roads I have not travel too before. In our quest to travel to all the hot spots and premium Bike Events we sometimes forget that good times and good friends can be found right around the corner. The local Mom and Pop corner Bar can be a great place to stop for lunch. I bet if you think about you could fine away to get there that you never would have went that way in a car. I was reminded of this yesterday as our group of friends met once again in search of a afternoon of great riding and adventure. One new member of our group has just gotten back into motorcycles and still building his confidence up. So I was challenged with taking us on back roads. Where there is less traffic. Doing this we were reminded that there are great roads right around the corner and great places to stop to eat. We even discovered there is a Female pool shark among us, sorry Al I had to mention it for Debbie. So next time your out looking to spend just a few hours riding try taking the long way around without using any of the major roads. One friends looks at it like any road with a double yellow line goes somewhere, yea I know all roads go somewhere, except in Boston and Alaska, using that logic you can really find some great views and places to visit. Okay so back to the original story of finding new places. My wonderful wife of 15 years recently had her schedule changed where she now has Thurs. and Fri nights off so we can enjoy some Friday rides while the kids are in school. We took off to find the Sullivan County Roadhouse, just south of Laporte, PA on SR 220. This place has been receiving a lot of fame from American Idol Star Aaron Kelly. Great place that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Has a Hotel, Dining Room, Bar and Banquet Hall. The food, service and hospitably was great. The bar has nickels shellacked into it, some 16,000 with other coins along the bar rail. Can’t wait to take the group up there for a ride on a weekend. Another place we found that day, even thou they weren’t open yet, they let us use there facilities. Is the Colley Pub has a big deck with picnic tables and half of it under cover. Bubba Blackwell What a treat it was to see Bubba Blackwell perform at Lancaster Harley Davidson. He is a showman and an extraordinary stunt performer. He makes the audience come alive! He holds all kinds of Motorcycle Jumping records. Bubba is best known for breaking Evel Knievel’s jump record over cars and buses using a Harley Davidson XR750 track race motorcycle. He has been sponsored by and promoted Buell Motorcycle Company. He began his career in 1998 when he jumped 20 cars in Everett, MA Breaking Knievel’s 19 car record. His love for bikes started when he was five, when he would ride mini bikes. He broke the bus jump record in 1999, jumping over 15 buses. Bubba broke Knievel’s last remaining record, by jumping 52 stacked cars in October of 2008. It was his 41st birthday. On July 4, 2001 Bubba attempted to beat his own record, attempting to jump 22 cars at Del Mar Fair. He came up short and crashed. It was one of the most devastating crashes in history. It was featured on A &E’s “Shockwave” and Discovery Channels “ Destroyed In Seconds”. He was placed on Life Support and was in for a long recovery. He will again attempt the infamous jump on June 12, 2010 by jumping 22 Ford Focus cars at Rockingham Park in Salem, New Hampshire. This made me a little curious…..so I asked a few questions and he graciously replied. First I asked him if he ever feels fear before he jumps or is it a rush? He replied, “Never fear, but maybe excitement mixed with terror….I gotta what I said I would do, even if I have a tooth ache.” I asked if he feels different approaching a jump after the crash? His response, “YES!!! I GO FASTER!!!!! June 12th in Salem, NH. I am re-attempting the 22 car jump I missed in California, for Laconia Bike Week. I also wanted to know if there was anything he wanted people to know about Bubba Blackwell, that they might not know or have a misconception about. I loved his response…..”I’m still married to the same smoking’ hot lady for coming up on 19 years and have a 4 and a half year old daughter that thinks I’m kinda cool. I have surpassed all my dreams and expectations. I am having the time of my life, and love making all of the young riders angry, that I haven’t quit yet so they may have a chance to get the attention from the World’s Greatest Motorcycle Company “Harley -Davidson”….P.S. On A Wing And A Prayer God and Sex…do they go together? Yes, they do. God invented sex. The Bible is a very sexual book. It speaks about sex without embarrassment or shame -- if done God’s way. It openly shows the sexual sins of people. You can read about Lot’s daughters having sex with him in Genesis 19:30-38, or David’s adultery with Bathsheba in II Samuel, Chapter 11. These are just a couple of the many examples in the Bible. Most people think of sexual intercourse as a physical commitment, but it is also an emotional and spiritual commitment that a man and woman make to each other. Sex begins in your head – not the bed. My name is Sue, and I am Pastor Frank’s wife. I recently wrote a book titled “God’s Word on Sex and Dating.” Pastor Frank asked if I would share this month about my book. The book guides teens, parents, youth leaders and pastors through the often confusing and peer pressure influenced world of sex and dating and provides practical ways for single people to stay pure before marriage. The book answers actual questions that were asked to us by our youth such as, “how far is okay?” or “is it alright for an engaged couple to have sex?” or “should you discuss previous sexual experiences with your fiancé?” or “what is this new thing called sexting?” (and many more questions.) God’s Word on Sex and Dating provides encouragement and spiritual guidance to young adults who want to have happy, fun-filled dates while remaining pure. It explains how to share responsibility for actions on a date; how to distinguish between lust and love; what to look for in the person you date, etc. I also share what to do if you have already blown it. There is an entire chapter on the many sexually transmitted diseases, telling the symptoms and treatments of each one. The book is an awesome resource for young, unmarried people, but it is also valuable for anyone divorced and looking to marry again. We have given it to our nieces and nephews and will give it to our grandchildren in the future. It is Frank’s and my desire to get it into the hands of as many young people as we can. I believe if they would read it and apply the principles written, that they would spare themselves much trouble. God has a “blessed” life for each of us. He tells us how to live so we can have the happiest and most rewarding life. No matter what your age is, God cares about your relationships. On June 26, 2010, our church will be hosting our annual bike blessing. There will be free food, fellowship and a bike ride that day. Everyone is welcome. We just need to know if you are planning to come so we have
1. Are the organizers Bikers? 2. Are they a Biker friendly Business all the time or just on Bike Nite? 3. If there is a ride, is it going to be well run, escorted, traffic controlled, route planned out by bikers? 4. Where is the money going? To an individual or local organization that truly needs your help, or a medical conglomerate that lobbies to force insurance and riding limitations on us all. 5. Does the club come support your events when the time comes. 6. Is it a Veterans ride, showing support for the men and women who keep us safe. 7. Is it a Ride to buy bullet proof vest for our policemen and women or other needed equipment (that should be standard issue with the job). 8. Is it a fundraiser that the whole community is getting involved in and the bikers are just doing their part. Last but not least is it a ride to let the political powers know we are watching them. I hope we all remember to give back to the ones who give to us.
