It has been a very hot summer! Hottest on record, “THEY” say. A lot of amazing Bike Nites and Shows this summer. Some awesome Rides. I don’t think we missed many. Carlisle was huge. May not be Sturgis, but Pa needs us to spend our money here this year. Didn’t make out there to Sturgis this year but have several Family members and friends who made the trip. We will be sure to have their stories and pics in next month.

I know when I show my bike and I just love to see the smiles on there faces and the awes. Cameras flashing. The bike participants love to see cameras flashing. Thats the biggest compliment to the participants who has their bikes in the show. The bikers put their bikes in the to show to show them off. If you ever see a big bad biker on a cool looking bike even tho looking tuff deep down in he really loves you checking out his bike and if you tell him it looks cool you just might get a smile out of him. A bikers steel horse is the second best next his lady and now days next to her man. The art work ranged from Jesus art, Pittsburgh Steelers, Skulls, Cartoons and flames and more. Ride with a message In less than two years, I found myself once again discussing with my wife about the possibility of buying another Harley. There have been times in the past when I dabbled with the naïve idea that “it is easier to get to forgiveness than permission”, but I had since learned that philosophy is filled with many pitfalls. I had located a bank repo 2008 HD Softail Custom on an online auction. The bike was dropped with only minor damage, a great opportunity for someone who wanted to customize a ride. With a little explaining, and the fact that my 50th birthday was just around the corner, my loving wife gave me the green light to successfully follow the auction trail. The idea of creating a ride with a theme has been around for many years. Many of these beautiful bikes by far out weigh the work and effort I have put into designing “Thorn”. My goal, however, was to carry a message and my inspiration came from the words of Isaiah 53 hand etched on the chrome bib, “He laid on Him the sin of us all”. With the advice of my good friend, Marty Edwards, the International President of Black Sheep Harley Davidson for Christ, I found myself communicating with Rock & Roll Custom Paint Works in Orange, CA. about my ideas. Their design team helped me process my ideas into their sketches, and then into the four detailed custom art works contained within oriental blue kandy paint on the tins of Thorn. Before the completion of the paint, I was fortunate enough to visit their shop located outside Los Angeles. It was quite a thrill to see the pictures of the many stars like Jay Leno, William Shatner, and David Caradine, just to name a few, who have had their scoots customized by Rock & Roll; a fact that I was unaware of before I arrived at their shop. Creating a ride with a message was something I wanted to do for some time. A ride that would carry a message about the love of God; from beginning to end. The story of the eternal God who planned before the beginning

www.thunderroadspa.com

of time to ransom a people that had rejected his plan for life. To bring them back into a relationship with Himself through the sacrifice of his only Son. Thorn was put together with a desire to carry that eternal message. The story contained within the paint depicts Christ the Lion of the Tribe of Judah, who became the sacrificial lamb. The Lamb who was tortured and died on the cross for our sins; and the Lion who conquered death and the grave to arise in a blast of new life. The rear fender completes the message with the risen King returning as he promised on a white horse with a sword of truth carried in his hand. Fortunately, the Softail Custom comes from Harley with a raked fork, raised bars, a king and queen seat, some extra chrome, and a 200mm rear tire. It was perfect for the start of my project, but I also added a little extra fun. With the help of the great people at Susquehanna Valley Harley Davidson, a set of Vance and Hines big radius pipes, a SE big breather, and trip to the dyno made Thorn a fun screamer to ride. The final touch to the bike was an inspiration that came at 3am one morning; a chrome plated crown of thorns. It was a gift given to me years ago, a real crown of thorns, a nasty display with three inch thorns; the kind that would have been pressed upon Jesus’ brow. The crown of thorns has a mirror finish that reflects the awesome price that was paid for our sins by Christ on the cross. Fortunately, I am able to remove the crown before I ride. Something my friends and the inspection mechanic greatly appreciated. Thorn is not the most awesome customized ride you will ever see, but I am convinced it carries the most awesome message! U.S. MOTORCYCLE CRASH STUDY STALLS: EUROPEAN MAIDS 2.0 STUDY RELEASED The bikes crashed. The data was collected. And the information from the 53 accidents investigated in the Southern California pilot phase of the U.S. motorcycle crash causation study are now sitting -- waiting for an assessment of its efficacy and, more importantly, a huge infusion of cash. According to an article in the Los Angeles Times newspaper, “The long-awaited follow-up to the 1981 Hurt Study is short at least $2 million, and it’s unclear whether that funding will come through any time soon. Or ever.” So while the first nationwide motorcycle-crash study to be conducted in the United States in almost 30 languishes in limbo due to differences in focus and funding between government entities and advocacy groups, filling the void is MAIDS 2.0: An update of the Motorcycle Accident In-Depth Study of 921 accidents investigated from 1999-2000 in five sampling areas located in France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands and Spain. Among other things, the European study found that just over 50% of the motorcycle accidents in the subject cities were caused by drivers, with 69% of those resulting from “perception failure” which can include not seeing the rider, misjudging distances and space on the road. MAIDS 2.0 focuses on the 100 crashes out of those 921 accidents that resulted in death -- 25 of which occurred on bikes under 50 cc and 75 of which happened on motorcycles 50 cc and larger. Of the under-50 cc bikes, the rider, not another vehicle, was responsible for his or her own death in 64% of the fatal crashes; most often, the rider failed to perceive a road hazard and, as a result, failed to react to avoid that hazard. Most of the fatalities occurred in urban areas. For motorcycles 50 cc and up, the most fatality-prone class was sport bikes. A bike’s displacement and maximum velocity were not significant factors in predicting a rider’s death. As with bikes under 50 cc, the rider, not another vehicle, was at fault in most crashes that ended in death. The most common rider error for motorcyclists was making the wrong decision in reaction to a road hazard; 44% of motorcyclists also lost control in their avoidance maneuver. Most of the fatalities occurred in rural areas. “How applicable the MAIDS 2.0 data is to the American market is a subject of debate, not only because the study is dated, but also because the European market is so different,” wrote Susan Carpenter in the LA Times article. “Its riders are more commuteroriented than those in the leisure-minded U.S. and the bikes are, on average, smaller. Still, the MAIDS update points to some intriguing findings that, at the very least, could serve as cautionary advice as the U.S. motorcycle market becomes more transportation-oriented.” Some of the more relevant takeaway messages for riders of bikes both big and small:

12 Thunder Roads Pennsylvania

- Nighttime riding can be deadly. While most accidents in the MAIDS report happened during the day, fatal accidents were significantly higher at night. - Major roads are hazardous. The majority of fatalities occurred on straight roadways and “major arterials.” - Get a license. Riders who weren’t properly licensed were more likely to crash. - Wear protective gear. The 921 accidents in the study resulted in 3,417 injuries -- 31.8% of which were to the lower extremities, 24.3% to the upper extremities and 18.4% to the head. ON THE ROAD TO ROMANCE Motorcycling opens the road to romance, love and sex appeal. Famous faces increase their x-factor when they get onto two wheels on the big screen, and Hollywood has provided us with many cool biking images -- remember Quadrophenia? The Great Escape? Easy Rider? And they’ve recognized that girls like to ride too, from stylish Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday to more recently the modern Charlie’s Angels and glamorous Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft. Plenty of celebrities like to pull on a pair of leathers and enjoy the freedom of riding on two wheels, from actors and musicians to politicians, comedians, and chefs have all joined the growing numbers of people who like to ride. But at least in Britain, romantic bikers would rather ride with their other half than movie megastars like Kate Winslet, or Tom Cruise. In a Motorcycle Industry Association survey, when asked to name who they would most like to take a fantasy ride with, twice as many bikers nominated their partners than petite pop star Kylie, Star Wars’ Ewan McGregor, or Bond’s Pierce Brosnan. So if your partner doesn’t already ride, why not get them onto two wheels so you can “Get More Out of Life” together, as promoted during National Motorcycle Week in England, held July 12-18… “More freedom, more fun, more friends, more action and more opportunities.” QUOTABLE QUOTE: Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter. Martin Luther King Jr. (1929 - 1968) civil rights leader & clergyman

Know the Law by Attorney Steve Stambaugh

I can’t believe that the Summer Riding Season is winding down. Where did the days go? Please keep Saturday, November 6th clear for the York County Harley Davidson Owner’s Association’s 14th Annual David Milliken Derr, Jr. Memorial Toy Run. Last year’s Run saw 600+ motorcycles and riders join us in our ride to Penn State Children’s Hospital in Hershey. We are looking to set another record run this year so please spread the word. Registration is from 10:00 a.m. til about 12:30 p.m. at the Sam’s Club parking lot in York. Please get there no later than 12:30 p.m. because the Toy Run has to leave promptly at 1:00 p.m. - we have a detachment of Pennsylvania State Police motorcycle cops who lead the Run and assist in shutting down access to I-83 during the Run. We own I-83 while we ride to Hershey to help the kids!!! This Run is usually the last HUGE Run of the riding season so come out and join the fun. Please check out YCHDOA’s web site (www.ychdoa.com) for additional details. Also, remember that the kids at the Penn State Children’s Hospital have to face their medical conditions rain or shine, hot or cold, and yes, sleet or snow, SO WE RIDE regardless of the weather. I also note that Fox 43 TV is having a Pride & Ride Run on Saturday, September 25th (during what used to be, and will hopefully again be, the York Open House weekend). We’ve come a long way since Fox 43 sponsored last year’s Save the Plant Run. Fox 43 TV

www.thunderroadspa.com

is planning on the Pride and Ride Run being an annual event depending on community feedback so come out and support HD and more importantly the workers. Remember, HD’s management never figured that the York plant’s workers would vote to accept a contract that undoubtedly meant the loss of most of their jobs, but the York Plant workers proved HD’s management wrong when they voted to sacrifice themselves to save the Plant and save York County!!! Let’s honor the workers’ sacrifice by joining Fox 43’s Pride & Ride Run. Turning to the legal side of this article, I have decided to take a few minutes to discuss Allstate Insurance Company’s recent television commercial blitzkrieg aimed squarely at bikers. We’ve all seen these ads - slow motion footage of a riderless bike going down. These commercials tug at my heart, and I hate Allstate with a passion, so do not be deceived by Allstate and its slick commercials. I have several observations. First, Allstate’s tag line is that it offers policies for as low as $100.00. Really? I am sure they do, but take a step back and ask yourself - what kind of coverage/ protection can you buy for $100.00? The answer - nothing worth buying. Second, why doesn’t Allstate show the rider in its commercial? The answer - when you get wiped out in an accident and find out that the policy Allstate sold you doesn’t cover diddly squat, they don’t want to get sued for creating a false advertisement that they actually gave a hoot about you and I - the riders. Third, and this is based on my personal experience as an attorney dealing with Allstate on a constant basis, and therefore is my own personal opinion, the last company you ever want to cover your back is Allstate Insurance Company. Allstate is the worst insurance company alive. While all insurance companies are only out for their corporate bottom line, Allstate takes that to the lowest level possible. Consider yourself warned and spread the word. See you on the road.

Chris “Rhino” Culbert No matter how we became cycle enthusiasts we all know one thing “Exhilaration” when we get on that horse! Whether you are a first time rider or an old veteran, whether you dirt bike, ride a custom, or anything in between the biker community is a freedom force in American society in which I am proud to be a member. The idea is rooted deep inside of the freedoms and ideals our country was founded upon. I look back to some earlier days through stories of the “Booze Fighters” and films such as The Wild One with Brando, Dennis hopper with Fonda in Easy Rider, and guys like James Dean and Evil Knievel. Through these films and men I feel the spirit of the American soul with the mental and physical toughness of our ancestors, who risked everything to come to this great land with pioneering spirits and fought to keep our rights of freedom. As for who I am, I am an average guy as most of us are, with an extreme love for bikes. I started riding at the age of 6 on a Montgomery Ward mini bike and a Honda QA50. My older brother, Dan was a big part of my life on bikes; I was always chasing him. I raced motocross through the 70’s and early 80’s riding Suzuki Rm80’s,100’s, and 125’s. At 15 I had my first Harley, an Italian made 125 Single Lunger. At 18 got my first road vessel a Suzuki GS550L, later my 64’ pan, and now I am keeping with my 98’ Wideglide. With the exception of the years my children were being born and solidly in school I have been on bikes. We all have our stories to tell and Man wouldn’t that be an American novel. “Biker to Biker” Brothers and Sisters, ride on with the freedoms afforded us in our U.S. of “A.” and thank a veteran for this. I’d like to thank Café’s custom cycles for providing a bike that I no longer own for the pictures. -–Chris “Rhino” Culbert

HOT BABES, COOL BIKES AND SUPERSTARS

FREDERICK, MARYLAND, AUGUST L,2O1O By Flashpoint At the Frederick County Fairgrounds on a hot Sunday - August L,2OLO - to be exact, Outlaw Jam 2010 put on a very impressive musical/bike event that rocked the State of Maryland. This all day event had something for all to really enjoy. Cool/awesome vintage motorcycles from various years were on display where many people could view them. This was put on by Chesapeake Motor Antique Motorcycle Club of Chesapeake, Maryland. A wild Riding Wheelie Machine by Road Rash Motorsports, cool custom motorcycles by Jackman Custom Cycles of Frederick Maryland and Kundratic Custom Cycles were on display. Various vendors were on hand such as Dr. Toms Leather of Newport, Pa., John Longo Custom Seats, Rider lnsurance and Nationwide lnsurance for those who needed a little more protection for the road. Awesome tattoo artist Deville Jack of Baltimore, Maryland was also on hand. Some who got their autographs from FX TV series Sons of Anarchy, stars Katey Sagal (Gemma) and Charlie Hunnam (Jax) and afterwards had the signatures tattooed on their body. Katey Sagal and Charlie Hunnam greeted hundreds of fans with a photo session and signed autographs. They were really two great individuals who were very classy and down to earth with fans, with me being one of them. You also had plenty of great food available for all to sample and purchase. There was a Miss Outlaw Jam Bikini contest with $2,500 in cash prizes. Great music was provided by Candlebox, Black Stone Cherry, the Nighthawks with special guest blues guitarist Bob Margolin followed by two of the biggest recording artist groups of our time - Blue Oyster Cult who performed here in the Baltimore, Maryland and Washington DC area for the 1't time in almost 10 years and they really rocked the place with hits like "Don't Fear the Reaper, l'm Burnin For You, Godzilla," etc., and the off the chart legendary band Bad Company who really brought down the house with hits like "Bad Company, Feel Like Making Love, and their show stopper Rock and Roll Fantasy." Paul Rodgers, Mick Ralphs and Simon Kirke are the true center of the universe when it comes to getting together Bad Company's pure classic rock sounds as only they can. MAN VS. WOMAN THE WOMAN POEM

Before I lay me down to sleep, I pray for a man who's not a creep. One who's handsome, smart, and strong. One who loves to listen long. One who thinks before he speaks. One who'll call, not wait for weeks. I pray he's rich and self-employed, And when I spend, won't be annoyed. Will pull out my chair and hold my hand. Massage my feet and help me stand. Oh, send a king to make me queen. A man who loves to cook and clean. I pray this man will love no other. And relish visits with my mother.

THE MAN POEM

I pray for a deaf-mute gymnast nymphomaniac with big tits who owns a bar on a golf course, and loves to send me fishing and drinking. This doesn't rhyme and I don't give a shit.

ILLEGALS

We need to show more sympathy for these people. • They travel miles in the heat. • They risk their lives crossing a border. • They don’t get paid enough wages. • They do jobs that others won’t do or are afraid to do. • They live in crowded conditions among a people who speak a different language. • They rarely see their families, and they face adversity all day ~ every day. I’m not talking about illegal Mexicans. I’m talking about our military troops! Doesn’t it seem strange that many Democrats and Republicans are willing to lavish all kinds of social benefits on illegals, but don’t support our troops, and are even threatening to defund them?

PATRIOT GUARD

Y

ork's historic Prospect Hill Cemetery held their updating flag ceremony on August 7, 2010. One hundred ninety American flags were added to the 5,685 flags already honoring our fallen soldiers. There are three distinct collections of flags: the first symbolizes U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq, the second honors our men and women who gave their lives in Afghanistan and third to honor our Pennsylvania Hero's. These soldiers will be honored by the reading of their names. A bell rang as they place a new flag into the ground followed by a salute. A prayer was said. The York Country Veterans Honor Guard gave them a gun-salute. Also the sound of bagpipes playing Amazing Grace and the release of live snow white doves. Hey fellow Americans, Vets and Bikers. Let me say this, if you have never attended a ceremony like this or any sort of it's kind, do so. Go to one. It's not boring let me tell you. It don't matter how big and bad your are it will bring you to your knees. Getting chills and tears running down your cheek. Knowing they GAVE the ULTIMATE PRICE!! (for you and me) You won't want to miss the next one and the next one! We as Americans forget 911 and the many lives that perished that day. We didn't ask for this, but we had to stand up for what TRUE Americans believe in. JUSTICE!! I know what your thinking. I HATE WAR also. We have brave men and women willing to fight for JUSTICE. So lets give them respect and honoring them in any way you can. Don't let this be like the past wars where our soldiers, dead or alive go unnoticed and be disrespected. If you see a U.S. soldier and even a VET walking your way don't be afraid to go up to them and say "THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE". Just tell them! It will never be to late! Until it's late! You just may shock them by letting them know, you really do care and that they have your support. I am a VET and recently joined the Patriot Guard and this was my first mission. One I will never forget. The Patriot Guard was Standing in for Those Who Stood for Us. Hey younger genration! Just remember, this is your generation stand by your generation. Don't be afraid of what people will think. Shake a hand of a soldier. Let them know it's ok and that your proud of them. It's cool! Hell! If I

24 Thunder Roads Pennsylvania

see you shaking a hand of a soldier, I'll be over to the both of you, shaking your hands and telling you I'm proud of you both. Moms and Dads, I salute you, knowing it's hard to feel proud and yet feeling sad over your loss. May God give you the strenght for your loss. I'm pround to be American, a Vet, a Biker. I say to those who served there country in one way or another. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE! To the Troops that are away, Come home safe. The flag updating service was held on the anniversary of the creation of the Purple Heart medal, which was originally known as the Badge of Military Merit. On August 7, 1782 General George Washington devised the new badge of distinction for enlisted men and non-commissioned officers. The badge was reestablished by the President of the United States in the 1930’s, with the intent of recognizing soldiers who had been wounded or killed in battle. The Iraq and Afghanistan War Flag Memorial originated in 2005. Since its annual re-creation in April, 2010, war casualties in Afghanistan have been significantly rising. According to the Associated Press, the July death toll in Afghanistan was at least 63 U.S. soldiers, making it the deadliest month since the beginning of the war 9 years ago. At the writing of this press release, the U.S. fatalities in Iraq and Afghanistan total 5,629 [www.icasualties.org]. As a state Pennsylvania has made a considerable contribution to the current war effort. Two hundred sixty soldiers from our state have lost their lives in both conflicts [www. pahometownheroes.org]. Prospect Hill Cemetery was founded in 1849. From past to present the cemetery has been dedicated to honoring our nation’s veterans. Patriots from every American conflict, including two Medal of Honor winners are laid to rest on cemetery grounds. In addition to the Flag Memorial, a Fallen Hero Banner Display posthumously recognizes fallen soldiers who have ties to the York area. Recently, cemetery officials also dedicated the Court of Valor Memorial, which recognizes local servicemen who have received medals of valor.

By Vince Snyder This months Snap Tip is based on a question I get asked at every event and show I go to. “Why would I want my bike shot professionally?” Well before I answer this question I want to make clear this isn’t a sales pitch for my services. My feelings on why you might want to get your bike shot professionally are pretty simple. You have made a large investment in your bike. The average bike has coast more than a lot of riders spent on their car/truck. After buying your bike chances are you spent extra money adding chrome and other customization to this bike. Your bike has taken on a more personal feel to you at this point. So, in the same way you have pride in your girlfriend or wife and or maybe your kids, you are probably very proud of your bike. When you can add your favorite model (wife and or girlfriend) to the photos it just makes it that much more special a shot. In today’s world, photos are more prevalent than ever. Loading them on the various websites (examples: Face Book, My Space) that have profiles that allow you to post photos. Even sending them to friends and family via email. So, in those winter months when the bike is sitting covered and you can’t wait till the warmer weather to ride you will have great photos of your bike(s) to keep you going. So, consider contacting either a professional photographer or even a friend who takes good photos and get one of your pride and joys photographed the way your bike deserves. Good luck and see you next month!

Hagerstown is a special race for me as it’s the closest national to home. That means a lot of family and friends show up to watch me and the rest of my competitors do what we do. Normally Hagerstown is notorious for rain, but this year we had perfect weather to go along with a nice track. For practice I was rolling out a bunch of new things. Since all of my personal Harley’s are currently broke, Randy Texter of Lancaster H-D offered me the oppurtunity to ride one of his XR 750’s. The particular bike I rode was actually my girlfriends, haha. I was pretty excited to see how this hog would run and I was also unveiling my new leathers that showed up the day before the race thanks to Kelcey Gordon at NJK Leathers. All things aside we were pretty good right off the truck. At the end of timed qualifying I was sitting in the 14th position. Not to bad working with a new bike that I’ve never rode before. I was in the second heat race with Coolbeth, Kopp, Pearson, Cose, & Carpinello among others. At the start I quickly moved my self into a transfer spot and was running in the 4th spot. Kopp & Coolbeth were having a really cool battle that let Pearson and myself slowly run them down. About this time the red flag came out for a rider down in turn one. Off the restart Pearson and myself tangled slightly and Carpinello 28 Thunder Roads Pennsylvania

got around me through turn one. Going down the back stretch I was able to retake the 4th spot back and held my own for a direct transfer to the main event. We made a few changes to the front end between the heat and main because the track was getting really slick. I felt pretty good going into the main. As quickly as we got going the race was stopped because of a three rider pile up in turn one. The next start I had a really good jump and found myself running in the 7th spot. We made it a couple laps before a couple riders went down in the middle of turns three and four. This time we had a single file restart and I lost one spot to Smith right off the bat. Going down the backstretch the bike cut out and I lost a few more spots. I got into a good battle with Lawrence for the 11th spot and all the meanwhile my bike kept cutting out every so often. I figured I must have been bumping the carbs with my leg when I would push back on the seat so I made an adjustment with how I was doing so and that seemed to fix the problem. I noticed the front guys running a higher line than me. I needed to try something as they were starting to pull away slightly. Well the high line was the way to go and the last ten laps of the race I was putting in pretty solid laps that let me run down the pack of riders ahead of me. I caught the group

ahead of me on the last lap, but I just ran out of time to do anything with them. In the end I finished in the 10th spot for my second top ten of the year. I felt a bit faster than what we finished especially in the later stages of the race, but thats part of it. It’s my fault for not catching on to riding the high line earlier in the race. Back in the pits we found the problem for the bike cutting out. We found some marks on the fuel line that suggest I was pinching it with my leg causing the bike to cut out. All in all I’m pretty happy with the way things are going this year all considering the position I was in less than a year ago. My race pace is getting better every week as well as my physical conditioning. I’m skipping out on Peoria because my leg is in no condition to take the hit of the jump, but count on seeing me at the next event in Indy. Back to where it all started! Thanks to all my sponsors, family, and friends for the support. Thanks - B Brandon Lee Robinson - GNC #44 15 Wood Valley Ln. ABATE Update The Pennsylvania Legislature is on summer recess at the time of writing this article. There are two things I want to bring you up to date on.

Pennsylvania: PA Turnpike 43, 60, 66 and 576. The special tag does not provide discounts in other states that accept E-ZPass, and tags from out-of-state toll agencies such as the New Jersey Turnpike do not qualify for Pennsylvania’s E-ZPass discount (though non-Pennsylvania residents can get a Pennsylvania motorcycle tag).

Effective June 26th, Pennsylvania motorcyclists who pass the motorcycle skills evaluation on a three (3) wheeled motorcycle will receive a Class M endorsement with a “9” restriction. This means they will only be permitted to ride three (3) wheeled motorcycles.

The special motorcycle E-ZPass transponder or tag is clearly marked with the letters “MC” and cannot be used for passenger vehicles.

Another question that comes up deals with the Pennsylvania Turnpike. What class am I, with a sidecar, or with a sidecar with a trailer……? I received the following information from the PR Department of the Turnpike Commission. Dealing with EZ Pass, which you can get a discount on tolls if you have on your motorcycle. Hopefully, this will help clear up any questions you have dealing with Pa. Turnpike.

Those wishing to sign up for the E-ZPass program can do so online at www.paturnpike.com or by calling 1-877- PENNPASS.

Pennsylvania Turnpike Update:

Important Toll Information for Motorcycles

he Pennsylvania Legislature is on summer recess at the time of writing this article. There are two things I want to bring you up to date on. The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission offers a 25% discount for motorcyclists who use E-ZPass. Those paying cash for a toll cannot receive the discount. Motorcycle riders must have purchased their E-ZPass through the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission to qualify for the discount. The 25% motorcycle discount only applies to the Pennsylvania Turnpike System, including the northeastern Extension (I-476) and these expansion roads in southwestern www.thunderroadspa.com

Even considering the 25% discount, the E-ZPass fare can never be less than the Pennsylvania Turnpike’s minimum, Class-1 fare which is presently 50 cents.

Vehicle Classification

Motorcycles are considered Class-1 vehicles for farepayment purposes on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, including motorcycles with sidecars and those hauling a trailer. Occasionally, sidecar/trailer motorcycles may be identified as Class 2 by equipment in the toll-plaza lane. (With a sidecar, this fault might be corrected if the driver steers straight into the lane approaching the tollbooth without swerving to the left as they approach the collector.)

Here’s how to address a misclassification issue: · Cash Customers: If a sidecar or trailer causes the class to be elevated to Class 2, the toll collector, at exit, is permitted to manually change a classification in a lane and offer the lower rate to the motorcycle customer. The rider is responsible to alert the collector to the error. Should a motorcyclist encounter a problem where they are charged the wrong class fare, please obtain a receipt from the collector after you have paid; and then call 1-800-331-3414 Monday through Friday, 8:30 A.M. to 4:30 P.M. to find out how to appeal the toll. · E-ZPass Customers: If you notice on your E-ZPass statement that you have been charged a Class-2 fare, you must call the E-ZPass customer service center at 1-877-PENN-PASS and request that the fare be lowered to a Class 1. The representative can help guide you through the process. Thunder Roads Pennsylvania 29

“It's not Can or Can't, It's Do or Don't” The 4th Annual Stephanie Jallen Paraympic Fund Ride Well we pulled off another great ride for Stephanie. She was joined by over 200 bikers on a 56 mile escorted ride thru the beautiful Wyoming Valley. Special thanks go out to the Northmoreland and Noxen Fire Departments, the Luzerne County Sheriffs and the West Wyoming, Wyoming and Exeter Police Departments for helping us stay safe. After enjoying the ride, we all ended up at the Holy Family Grounds in Nanticoke for an awesome party. Everyone enjoyed listening to the tunes from Cool Ride and Hidden Drive and watching the (is there a name) Belly Dancers. Carmen from Pocono Mountain Leather was set up with some great deals on leathers and gear, while dedicated volunteers served up some of the tastiest treats this side of a Church Social. Then there was “the Dunk Tank”. Stephanie was the first to take her place above the big bucket of cold water and after “talking trash” to the crowd, was dunked by the first throw of the day! The line grew as Stephanie kept up the “insults” while climbing back up to take her seat. Several teens (who had the right clothes) took their turns in the tank and seemed to enjoy the cooling off as much as helping Steph. Then it was my turn to take one for the team when a bid of $20.00 for me to get on the seat. Boy that water WAS cold! All in great fun for a amazing young lady who is making NEPA proud to call her our very own. As bikes were pulling out and things were winding down I noticed a young girl looking at Stephanie's picture in a magazine. I brought Steph over to meet her, she autographed the magazine and posed for a picture with her. I bet in about 4 years when Stephanie is on a podium receiving her medals, that little girl will have a great story to tell her friends. Remember “It’s not Can or Can't, It's Do or Don't”. PennDOT’s ‘Live Free Ride Alive’ Documentary Makes Online Debut

Motorcyclists Urged to Put Safety First, Take Free Training Courses

residents and are held from March through October at approximately 70 sites across the state. Motorcycle permit holders who successfully complete the course will be issued a motorcycle license.

Harrisburg – Pennsylvania motorcyclists, their friends and family members tell their own stories in PennDOT’s new motorcycle safety campaign documentary, which debuted online today at www.LiveFreeRideAlive.com.

The 15-hour, Basic Rider Course (BRC) consists of five hours of in-class instruction and 10 hours of practical riding experience on a riding range under the watchful eyes of certified rider coaches. The BRC is a comprehensive safety and skills overview that provides valuable training for new riders. This course is also helpful to more experienced riders, allowing them to polish their skills and recognize any unsafe habits they may have picked up. Motorcycles and helmets are provided for students taking the basic course.

The documentary, which celebrates the freedom that comes with riding and offers a sobering look at what happens when that freedom is gone, made its public debut on July 24 at the Carlisle Bike Fest in Cumberland County. “The Live Free Ride Alive campaign is a major component of PennDOT’s efforts to reduce motorcycle crashes and fatalities on Pennsylvania roadways,” said PennDOT Secretary Allen D. Biehler, P.E. “The campaign reminds riders to take it easy out there and accept personal responsibility for their actions, and addresses such issues as drinking and riding, speeding, and being properly trained and licensed to operate a motorcycle.”

If a rider has completed the BRC, the six-hour, Experienced Rider Course helps experienced riders refresh their safety knowledge and hone their skills on a riding range under the guidance of certified rider coaches. Students taking the ERC must provide their own motorcycle and helmet.

After viewing the documentary online, riders are encouraged to share their experiences and the lessons they’ve learned. Site visitors may also take the “Be One Less” pledge, in which they pledge to drive safely and be one less crash statistic.

In addition to the documentary, www.LiveFreeRideAlive.com offers several great resources for riders, including sections on motorcycle gear and upkeep, rider tips, information about popular motorcycle routes in Pennsylvania and much more.

Pennsylvania riders can enhance their driving skills and safety awareness by taking free training offered through Pennsylvania’s Motorcycle Safety Program. Courses are free to Pennsylvania

On A Wing and A Prayer Struggling with anger….part 2 Last month I shared on anger and how it can be good and bad. Someone said, “when anger is checked, it is like a refiners fire that tempers steel to make it stronger.”

or water. In Numbers chapter 20 the people complained because they didn’t have any water. God told Moses to speak to the rock and water would be provided but he was so angry that he hit the rock. Because of his anger (and disobedience) at that time, he did not get to go into the promised land. I saw a bumper sticker once that said, “I only have one nerve left, and you are starting to get on it.” I think Moses must have felt that way too.

This month I want to talk about Moses and his moments of anger. Did his anger temper or consume him? Did his anger show fear, frustration or impatience? Did his anger show his passion for God? Let’s take a moment and look at his moments of anger. Moses was a natural born leader even though he didn’t always think so. Exodus 3:11 says, “and Moses said unto God, who am I, that I should go unto Pharoah, and that I should bring forth the children of Israel out of Egypt?” In Exodus 4:10 we see that Moses had a problem with speaking. He said, “but I am slow of speech and of a slow tongue.” In another version it says, “master please, I don’t talk well. I’ve never been good with words, neither before nor after you spoke to me. I stutter and stammer.” Moses was highly educated. He had learned from the Egyptians. Although he had fame and he was a successful military leader in the Egyptian army, he did not speak well and he had an anger problem. In Exodus 2:11-15 Moses saw one of the Hebrew men being beaten. By birth Moses was Hebrew, so that really angered him. His emotions took over and he committed the crime of passion. He killed the Egyptian that was beating the Hebrew. Moses was called by God to deliver the Hebrew people but he needed to learn that he couldn’t do that by his own strength. The result of Moses killing the Egyptian was that Moses would spend 40 years in exile as a fugitive. After those 40 years, God appeared to him in a burning bush and he began his job as leader of the Hebrews. God called Moses up on the mountain where God gave him the ten commandments. Down below, the Hebrew people made a golden calf to worship instead of worshipping God. When Moses saw them worshipping the golden calf, he was so angry that he broke the ten commandments. He let his emotions rule again. Moses was angry with the Hebrew people because they complained all the time about the food 34 Thunder Roads Pennsylvania

There are several things God wants us to do: First – spend time with God everyday in the Bible and prayer Second – walk humbly before God and let Him direct our lives Third – have total dependence on God. He is our source of strength and power Fourth – have confidence in God. If He said it, then He will do it. Believe He will do it and listen and obey Him Fifth – have compassion. Even when Moses got angry with the Hebrew people, he still prayed for them. Sixth – have accountability to someone. If you follow these things you can overcome your anger. God can change your anger if you ask Him to help you. Philippians 4:13 says, “I have strength for all things in Christ, who empowers me (I am ready for anything and equal to anything, through Him who infuses inner strength into me; I am self sufficient in Christ’s sufficiency.”) Someone once said “our lives rise, fall and turn on our choices and often are never the same because of them.” The choices Moses made were often laced with anger and that robbed him of his dream – the promised land. Give this area of your life over to God. He will help you overcome. Ride safe, Pastor Frank

NEPA Mission Report

What started as a sad day as we all had gathered to honor our Fallen brother Al "Bluesman" Philo, ended with a send off mission at the WB/S International Airport/ Avoca. Five bikes, and 7 patriots escorted Curt Jr and his family to the WB/S Airport in Avoca for a proper send off. Curt Jr is on his way to Okinawa, Japan for a two year tour. We coined him with a FoTF coin and reminded him of the purpose of the coin and told him also to not be afraid to pass it on We will send him more. As we were at the airport coining him, we met a Vietnam Vet so we welcomed him home. On another flight and so at the airport, we sent off a Army Soldier and coined his parents who were Army Vets themselves. This was truly a moving experience, to welcome home and send off two soldiers, at the same airport at the same time. Our mision must carry on. #Sometime during this day it had become known that a young Marine's remains, LCpl. Abram L. Howard, 21, Williamsport, PA, would be flying into WB/S international Airport on Wed. 8/04/10. So there was a possibility of another mission on the horizon already. When the escort formed at WB/S AVP there was an escort of over 200 motorcycles that were ready to rumble its way to Williamsport (about a 90 mile trip in 90+ Degree temperatures). This was find display of patriotism as we passed through the small towns. We saw firemen standing attention, PennDot workers standing in line saluting or hands placed over their hearts as we passed. Even tractor trailers pulling over to pay their respect. The closer we got to Williamsport, the bigger the crowd. We rode past his house and made our way to the funeral home where another flag line circled the crowd as Marine Honor Guard moved his casket inside. So to say the least the week of 8/2/2010 is one many of us will never forget. Rest in peace Al you have set a very high standard for us in NEPA and we will continue on with your mission. Al, one last request if I ever loose track of the cause, just give me a nudge to get me back on track. Thanks for being a Proud American!

A redneck was stopped by a game warden in middle Tennessee recently with two ice chests full of fish. He was leaving a secluded lake well known for its fishing. The Game Warden asked the man, ‘Do you have a license to catch those fish?’ ‘Naw, sir’, replied the redneck. ‘I ain’t got none of them there licenses. You gotta’ understand, these here are my pet fish.’ ‘Pet fish?’ ‘Yeah. Every night, I take these here fish down to the lake and let ‘em swim ‘round for a while. Then, when I whistle, they jump right back into these here ice chests and I take ‘em on home.’ ‘That’s a bunch of b.s.! Fish can’t do that.’ The redneck looked at the warden for a moment and then said, ‘It’s the truth Mr. Government Man. I’ll show ya, it truly works.’ ‘O.K.’, said the warden. This I’ve got to see!’ The redneck poured the fish into the lake and stood and waited. After several minutes, the warden says, ‘Well?’ ‘Well, what?,’ says the redneck. The warden says, ‘When are you going to whistle them back?’ ‘Whistle who back?’ ‘The FISH,’! yelled the warden! ‘What fish?,’ replied the redneck, “I thought we were just beholdin’ the beauty of the lake.” A Georgia preacher said to his congregation, “Someone in this congregation has spread a rumor that I belong to the Ku Klux Klan. It is a horrible lie and one which a Christian community cannot tolerate. I am embarassed and do not intend to accept this. Now, I want the party who did this to stand and ask forgiveness from God and this Christian Family.” No one moved. The preacher continued, “Do you not have the nerve to face me and admit this is a falsehood? Remember, you will be forgiven, and in your heart you will feel glory. Now stand and confess your transgression.” Again all was quiet. Then slowly, a drop-dead gorgeous redhead with a body that would stop traffic rose from the third pew. Her head was bowed and her voice quivered as she spoke. “Reverend, there has been a terrible misunderstanding. I never said you were a member of the Ku Klux Klan. I simply told a couple of my friends that you were an absolute wizard under the sheets.” This one is for everyone who... a) has kids b) had kids c) was a kid d) knows a kid e) is going to have kids. I guess that means all of us!! 38 Thunder Roads Pennsylvania

I was packing for my business trip and my three year old daughter was having a wonderful time playing on the bed. At one point she said, ‘Daddy, look at this’ , and stuck out two of her fingers. Trying to keep her entertained, I reached out and stuck her tiny fingers in my mouth and said, “yum, yummy” ‘Daddy’s gonna eat your fingers,’ pretending to eat her pudgy littlle fingers. She squealed with delight, yelling, “no, Daddy, no, don’t eat my fingers”. I went back to packing, looked up again and my daughter was standing on the bed staring at her fingers with a devastated look on her face. I said, ‘What’s wrong, honey, you still have all your fingers, don’t you?’ She looked at me and simply asked...... ‘Yeah, but what happened to my booger?’ An elderly priest invited a young priest over for dinner. During the meal, the young priest couldn’t help noticing how attractive and shapely the housekeeper was. Over the course of the evening he started to wonder if there was more between the elderly priest and the housekeeper than met the eye. Reading the young priest’s thoughts, the elderly priest volunteered, “I know what you must be thinking, but I assure you, my relationship with my housekeeper is purely professional.” About a week later the housekeeper came to the elderly priest and said, “Father, ever since the young father came to dinner, I’ve been unable to find the beautiful silver gravy ladle. You don’t suppose he took it, do you?” The priest said, “Well, I doubt it, but I’ll write him a letter just to be sure.” So he sat down and wrote: “Dear Father, I’m not saying that you ‘did’ take a gravy ladle from my house, and I’m not saying you ‘did not’ take a gravy ladle. But the fact remains that one has been missing ever since you were here for dinner.” Several days later the elderly priest received a letter from the young priest which read: “Dear Father, I’m not saying that you ‘do’ sleep with your housekeeper, and I’m not saying that you ‘do not’ sleep with your housekeeper. But the fact remains that if you were sleeping in your own bed, you would have found the gravy ladle by now.”

I went fishing this morning but after a short time I ran out of worms. Then I saw a Cottonmouth with a frog in his mouth. Frogs are good bass bait. Knowing the snake couldn’t bite me with the frog in his mouth I grabbed him right behind the head, took the frog, and put it in my bait bucket. Now the dilemma was how to release the snake without getting bit. So, I grabbed my bottle of Jack Daniels and poured a little whiskey in its mouth. His eyes rolled back, he went limp. I released him into the lake without incident and carried on fishing using the frog. A little later, I felt a nudge on my foot. There was that same damn snake with two frogs in his mouth!

Been Down Some Roads I’ve been down some roads

Gave me rides I can’t forget… Rides so fresh and clear

They’re not even memories yet I’ve been down some roads I couldn’t find again…

Roads I didn’t want to leave And didn’t want to end

More Than Skin Deep He rides for his colors and for his Brothers those colors stand for… Always did… So when they gathered for the charity ride and he was denied by someone telling him “No colors allowed, please.”

Roads running straight and true

He asked, holding out his riding vest… “Can I ride if I lay this aside?”

I’ve been down some roads

“Sure,” they said… “Glad to have you, bro.”

I’ve been down some roads Always ran into the wind Like a good-old friend

The like I’ve never, ever seen before

Where I’ve heard the night-time screams Of those not riding anymore I’ve been down some roads

Got deep under my scars and skin

That got me through some heavy times And saved me from my ruin

I’ve been down some roads

That were a movin’ mob scene

And I’ve been down the lonely track Where I’m the only one I’ve seen I’ve been down some roads

So fine the wheels don’t seem to touch the tar Like cruisin’ on a silver moonbeam Or glidin’ on a star

I’ve been on a road or two… Not ever too many though… just

Roads enough to know what I’m knowin’

Roads enough to know I want to keep on goin’

So he put his vest in his sack… stripped off his shirt then to let them see his colors inked Full-sized upon his bare back… He rides for his colors and for his Brothers those colors stand for… Always did

My Misspent Youth Held the throttle open through Dead Man’s Curve ran flat-out down a mountain never lost my nerve Whipped a downpour to a rooster tail anyone could follow… put my kickstand down at midnight in Redneck Hollow Camped out in a lightning storm on Hurricane Ridge crossed an angry flooded river on a loose-planked bridge That was all done yesterday in my misspent youth… but now that I’m older and wiser why… I’d do it all again tomorrow if you want to know the truth Thunder Roads Pennsylvania 41

Christmas in July! BY GEORGE “THUNDER” SVENCER Christmas in July! MMM! Is this a good thought to beat the HEAT! It was a great way to get great savings in the summer and to have Christmas party in July. CLASSIC HD had a lot going on. They had Demo Rides for the new Harleys they have in stock, which you may not always have that chance in the winter months. Discounts on exhaust installations and side walk sales. CLASSIC also invited Drag Specialties Product Truck and displayed their custom bikes. The Marines and the Leathernecks MC were there collecting Toys for Tots and if you dropped off a toy , you would receive a MotorClothes Mania Card what a deal. Other venders were there. Of course they had a Snack bar & soft drinks. I can’t forget they also had some Adult beverages. They had a Drive In Movie “National Lampoons Christmas Vacation” which started at dusk on Friday. Rider Insurance was there for the fun and sharing how they can help the riders to get the best coverage to suit the riders needs. What’s a Christmas party without Music? Back2life was there Rockin out with some Cool music. The group was sponsored By Rider Insurance. CLASSIC HD finish out the weekend with BBQ, Hot Dogs and Burgers on the Grill. TROUBLE BROTHERS

NOODLES TIPS FOR THE ROAD You know here in Pa we have four seasons; Winter, Still Winter, Almost Winter and Construction! Summer time is apparently time for Penndot to do their thing. FYI…a right lane construction closure is just a game to see how many people can cut in line by passing you on the right as you sit in the left lane waiting for the same jerks to squeeze their way back in before hitting the construction barrels. I especially love when a BIG tractor trailer blocks traffic so the idiots can’t cut in.

Well the trouble brothers were at it again. The quest for that new adventure, next hot spot they came up with a new rule for the day. We couldn’t stop any places either one had been in before. Sounded easy so they decided to meet in Tunkhannock, PA at 10 am. As DC sat waiting for FKOW to show up, as like usually he was running late, Probably had to stop at McD . He talked to a few fellow riders who getting set for there day of adventure. Ironically one was going to Honesdale as we were heading towards Towanda his hometown. Finally Fkow shows up and makes his excuses, everybody has them. So they were off, up historic SR 6 not much exciting happening in Tunkhannock. First place was Meshoppen a little one horse town with two bars and one blinking light. After a short stop to cool off, yes it was up into the high 80’s already. They turned up SR 267 towards Lawton, which usually is a nice road threw the country, well with all the Gas wells and heavy truck traffic involved in it, the roads are getting in bad shape. In PA where PennDot is famous for the “Bump” signs If you see a sign that says rough road you better believe it. It is most likely not a good road for Motorcycles. Anyways since there is this unwritten rule that you can never turn around and go back the same way, they kept weaving threw the potholes. Until they manages to get to Wyluasing. Which by then they of course were getting hungry and thirsty. They found a really nice historic place that was open and didn’t mind a couple of old saddle tramps. After some great food and chatting with the bartender they were back on their way going towards Athens, PA. They had planned a route on Fkow’s phone’s GPS, well those phones don’t update on the rough roads and DC was just following the directions, So they weaved and bobbed again, I sure hope they fix these roads when they are done drilling. Athens is a nice little town which really is part of a three town area, Athens Pa, Sayre PA and Wavery, Ny. Unfortunately the brothers forgot to bring helmets, hey just have to love PA’s helmet law,Thank you ABATE of PA. They had heard about a place in Wavery that is a great biker bar. Oh well next time. Well to cut this adventure short they weaved their way back down to Dushore, Colley, and Lovelton on their way back home. Another great day of adventure was winding down. Until next time be safe and remember if you want the trouble Brothers to visit send a email to bikerdave2367@yahoo.com and I’ll forward the request to them. www.thunderroadspa.com

There is no short cut in construction zones or rush hour, so suck it up and chill. Ever notice that anyone going too slow is an idiot, but anyone going too fast is a maniac? Be safe out there! The life you save may be mine!
