T i j ua na Jazz & Blues Festival celebrates its seventh edition M a n u e l A ya l a

Among the great artistic-musical attractions that this city has, undoubtedly one of them is the acclaimed Tijuana Jazz & Blues Festival, which since 2010 has placed the city as one of the points of reference for jazz and blues music , not only in the Mexican territory, but beyond its borders like San Diego and Los Angeles, California, from the neighboring country, from where year after year people and even musicians arrive exclusively to enjoy their musical and gastronomic offer. As if it were a revelation, after the heavy season of violence that took place between 2008 and 2010 in the city, the Tijuana Jazz & Blues Festival came to reinforce the bonds of communion that had somehow been lost among society and that undoubtedly set a precedent so that Tijuana not only resurfaced - like the phoenix - of its ashes, but also prostrates again in the world panorama to welcome visitors from all around the world. This festival was a key piece in that resurgence, and much was thanks to the Culture Promoter of Baja California, who, driven by the desire to return to the tradition of having live jazz and blues musicians in the historic Revoluciรณn Avenue, undertook the hard work that entails of bringing musicians of international stature together to begin to give form and essence to a project that is now a reality.

LIVE JAZZ TIJUANA VISITOR

During the years the event has taken place, through the ranks of the festival have paraded an infinite number of musicians of traced trajectory among which stand out the appearances of Betsy Pecanins, Stoney B. Blues, Leonard Patton, Ernesto Rosas, Steph Johnson, Lupillo Barajas, Gilbert Castellanos, Ernesto Lizรกrraga, among many others, who have remained in the memories and hearts of lovers of this musical genre that is closely related to the history of Tijuana.

"The Tijuana Jazz & Blues Festival has always focused on the goal of promoting the art and culture of our city through a large musical program in which local, national and international artists participate, together with the Baja California cuisine that usually surrounds this event for those who come to appreciate the music can also taste some of the typical dishes of the region." The Tijuana Jazz & Blues has always been characterized by maintaining a totally family and festive atmosphere, in which the coexistence between children and adults is pondered, as a way of transmitting a healthy and positive message of community and appreciation not only for the music and what comprises the event, but in the understanding also that through these proposals people are twinned and can fully enjoy without any complications. This situation has caused among the same people many times to comment that this is the event that they expect every year, because it is one of the events that is prized for showing a constant quality line, thanks to the curatorship that all the people who form the team of the promoter has maintained, while listening to the demands of the knowledgeable public that every year expects to see something good and of quality.

BOOK FAIR

It is so this year, concerned to continue in that constant, the Promoter has formed a very interesting music program which highlights the participation of musicians like A Love Electric + Medeski and Adjazzentes, among other surprises.

This year, and by mutual agreement, the festival will be held within the framework of the Tijuana Book Fair, another important event in the city, with whom they joined those communication and participation ties to make these events even more solid, in addition that for the first time, and to the delight of those who meet, the festival will have two days of activity on May 26 and 27.

The festival will be held on those days in the esplanade of the Tijuana Cultural Center (CECUT), a very attractive and interesting place located in the Rio Zone of the city, where you can also take the opportunity to observe the presentations of books, the exhibitions that there are in the enclosure, amongst many other things. So do not miss it, you are all cordially invited.

New Year, New You with Madrid

We know that the issue of weight loss is of utmost importance because in addition to making us look good and improve our body aesthetics, it prevents chronic degenerative diseases of high-risk. It is estimated that of 100% of diseases, 80% are the result of a sedentary lifestyle and a poor diet, where eating in excess and excessive intake of sugar, fat and alcohol, are a common factor.

"IT IS ESTIMATED THAT OF 100% OF DISEASES, 80% ARE THE RESULT OF A SEDENTARY LIFESTYLE AND A POOR DIET..."

TIJUANA IS HEALTHY Obesity can then be a problem related to genetics, which requires professional help to be treated properly. But the above should not be considered as an argument to justify the lack of interest and responsibility to assume habits of physical activity and good nutrition, which will always be the raw way to maintain a good weight, good aesthetics and health. In MADRID HEALTH & NUTRITION we have the interest, and we have the necessary experience to help you in a professional and personalized way. Our greatest satisfaction will be to achieve your goals. We have specific treatments for different health problems related to obesity. Treatments to improve body aesthetics, increase muscle mass and loss of fat percentage, including the reduction of localized fat in areas of specific interest. We are waiting for you to start an assistance program tailored to your needs.

The first problem is overweight, the second is obesity. Obesity is having too much body fat. It is estimated that for health purposes, it is not the same when the objective is sports competition; the amount of fat in a woman should be 20 to 30% of its weight total, and in men from 12 to 20%. The muscle mass must be equal to or greater than the amount of body fat, it should never be less. A low development of muscle volume can be the result of physical inactivity and a diet low in protein. When this happens, overweight occurs and when this problem is not addressed it becomes obesity. Obesity is associated with a higher likelihood of premature death and disability in the adult age, an increased risk of fractures and hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, insulin resistance, diabetes, high cholesterol and triglycerides and in most cases psychological effects such as depression and anxiety. A study conducted in 2007 by Kaiser, J. for Science; showed that there is a gene labeled FTO, common in individuals with obesity and less frequent in people with a body mass index in relation to their appropriate weight. It was determined that it is more likely to develop obesity in individuals who have this characteristic.

THE NEW PARTY SPOT IN DOWNTOWN

T

ijuana has been a nest for house, techno, rock, you name it. Rage Against the Machine once played in a famous bar on Revolucion Avenue back in the day, and not to mention Santana’s music grown born in this city. This translates to a vibrant nightlife that has never faded away, this vibe allows for more party spots to pop up, and now they are coming to life with a touch of the modernization flow that the city of Tijuana is experiencing. This new bar has been brought up by several friends, so I decided to see it for myself and get the 411. After a few beers at Teorema just up the street from Esquivel, I decided it was time to move on to Esquivel. Walking down Revolucion I spotted a tent structure on top of one of the most recent remodel rescues on the avenue that I had just written about, Esquina Sara’s rooftop is the home of Esquivel, it has been adapted for a proper good time.

TIJUANA is FRESH

With an incredible view of the city, multi-level platforms lounge areas, dance floor with DJ booth, disco ball and a well equipped staffed bar, and “Mucha Muchacha” (a lot of girls) Taco Bar just opposite of the DJ Booth, it definitely makes them stand out from most other after party spots.

It was a nice night to be out and ran into a couple of TJ friends I had not seen in a while. Confirming that this was the party spot of the moment. Great music, great drinks, and some very special tacos is a pretty secure formula for a good time. Esquivel’s concept attracts people from all ages. From younglings that probably just turned 18 that night, to people that are most likely in their 40’s, all having a great time and enjoying the same type of music.

When I got to the taco bar and read ribeye with chile and pork belly tacos, I surrendered my wallet. I ordered both and was very satisfied with my meal while, sitting in the bar area, drinking a Modelo and checking out the scene. Appfter, a party app has their official logo in neon lights right above the DJ terrace (making a statement about this place), Esquivel brings together the night, the drinks, the music, the tacos, and a beautiful view of the city from an iconic building rooftop.

t was Saturday night, first one this year that I hang out in TJ to check out new spots. First stop was Teorema, a hip, relaxed but modern designed bar. I loved the tones, the perfectly dimmed lights and white wall tiles. Their wood tables and urban art on the walls give it a simple and attractive look. They also have a section on Revolucion Avenue if you want to hang outside and people watch (Tijuana is a grrrrreat people watching location, specially Revolucion Avenue). Top it all of with some nice a** craft beer and a variety of options. I decided to go straight for the flight, I asked Ruby the beertender to serve me her choices, I started off with a “Radical” American Pale Ale, a Centauro “Oatmeal Stout” that stole my heart, the “Orbita” Raw IPA and finished off the first round with a “Supermash Citra” a Single Hop Pale Ale that made the perfect finish. After some Jenga accidents for getting creative on laying blocks in different angles, I ordered the second flight with different options, and some local premium popcorn bag that was delicious!

The second round brought me a “Supernova” Session IPA, a “Pitagoras” Belgian Saison, a “Vigia” Baja Kolsch, and ended with a “Corsario” Imperial Stout”. The beer diversity is very well practiced in this bar, there are options for everyone, and for those with a terrible memory specially when you drink (moi), they number the flights according to their corresponding beers on the menu, in case you forget the name or style, they got your back, cheers for that! You make my life easier!

Jenga, Uno, and Chess are some of the options Teorema has for your table. 3 TV’s with popular vintage movies are on screen if you just want to chill. The staff is super friendly, knowledgeable, English spoken and you can tell they love their job. Ruby, Brian, and Roberto were awesome behind the bar, really cool, chill peeps. They take care of everyone and help customer get what they crave. Ask them for recommendations. I got the club card, get 10 stamps and exchange it for a pint or a flight, like a coffee spot or something, but I like this one better, haha. Teorema has been open for 1 year and 3 months with a brewhouse on location. PHOTO BY: chris sÁnchez

Pet friendly, fun friendly and food friendly. Teorema does not have a kitchen menu, but the good thing about being on Revolucion Avenue is the number of options around you, and Teorema knows this and plays well with the game, they offer you the option to order from restaurants and eateries around you, eat them and enjoy a beer with your food at their place.

f you like sushi, and you have not made it across the Pacific Ocean to try the OG stuff in Japan or China (yes, there is OG sushi in China), this is a spot in Tijuana you have to visit. Be warned and patient, there are only 6 seats served at a time on this authentic Sushi bar, but is it well worth the wait. I recently came back from a 20 day trip to Japan where I enjoyed EVERYTHING! But that’s another story to tell… When I was assigned to check this place out, I was like… really??? Ok, I feel I can have a decent opinion now on sushi since I gained over 7 pounds just in that trip… (not telling how much more during the holidays, but I just signed up at the gym, yes, super cliche…).

When I arrived at the spot I had to wait in line for my turn like everyone, probably waited around 30 minutes, it was absolutely worth the wait. He asked me what I wanted from the menu, I asked him to serve me his choice off or on the menu, I was ready for battle, and I’ll tell you the truth.... I was not able to put up a fight. Each sushi piece is made and cut on sight, the salmon, surimi, and anguila are all imported, even the Ramen is from Japan! His commitment to true sushi is rock solid, I tried everything, yes… everything! And it was ALL good! Sorry, not good… exquisite. Liang Jin Hua, or better known now as “SUSHIMAN” is originally from Enping, China, with a 7-year background in the Sushi making business, he started his Sushi career in Guangzhou, China, a town famous for Sushi. He has been in Tijuana for 2 years now thanks to his friend and sister that encouraged him to take a chance on the city. As soon as I walked in he greeted me enthusiastically which does for everyone, then chatted a little about himself and sushi. He strongly pointed out the important details about traditional sushi, what one should expect and what the chef must deliver in order for it to be true sushi. From the sterilization of the food the temperature of the rice and the ramen’s origins he commits to deliver fresh right there and then made sushi, roll or ramen, SUSHIMAN puts his heart and soul in every single detail of all that he does behind that sushi bar. SHUSHIMAN opened its doors just 3 months ago and he is already in need of help, so if you would like to learn from a Sushi master, this is your opportunity. When you visit his place, take a look at the drawings on the walls, guess who made them? SUSHIMAN of course, turns out he is also an artist with the pen, his tattoo on his forearm was also designed by him. Liang is a true artist at heart, putting his skills on paper and on the table.

SUSHIMAN WANTS TIJUANA VISITORS TO HAVE A REAL TASTE OF SUSHI AT ITS FINEST, YOU CAN TELL HE IS A PASSIONATE MAN ABOUT SUSHI, AND THAT MY FRIENDS, IS SOMETHING RARE TO FIND .

f there’s one thing Tijuana is known for, for better or worse, it’s partying. You know the drill: Avenida Revolution, the dancing, the neon lights and copious amounts of cheap booze. Suddenly it’s the morning after and you wake up. Your head is throbbing, your tummy is percolating. You’re wrecked. While her medical credentials are unverifiable at present time, Dra. Clamato is considered the only “Crudologa” (Hangoverologist???) in all of Mexico. Luckily for those that love to explore Baja, she’s located in the heart of Tijuana’s hotel district. Under the thatched palapa roof of Villa Marina, the good doctor pushes her “ambulance” down the aisles, loaded with goodies. She says her concoctions raise the dead. As soon as they walk in, patrons of this seafood restaurant summon the doctor to cure what ails them.

dra.clamato is considered the only crudologa in all of mexico

TIJUANA is a journey The doctor knows the symptoms all too well: yellow complexion, haggard face, sunglasses indoors. The face never lies. She offers Clamato with your choice of tequila, vodka or beer, mixed with clams, shrimp and any number of sauces such as Tabasco and Worcestershire. All this topped with celery garnish for health purposes, no doubt. And for those wanting a nonalcoholic cure, she can whip up what she calls a “Rusa”, which is mineral water, lemon and plenty of ice served in a salt-rimmed glass.

“ your choice of tequila, vodka she offers clamato with

or beer, mixed with clams, shrimp and any number of sauces such as Tabasco and worcestershire. all this topped with celery garnish for health purposes, no doubt.

And it works! Let’s get real: on paper, this makes absolutely no sense, but people swear by it. The idea of hydrating with booze sounds crazy and calls into question the legitimacy of her medical credential, but you can’t argue with results. People feel relieved instantly. It helps to settle their stomachs. Dra. Clamato sees at the very least 100 “patients” daily. The doctor recommends complimentary dishes such as Lomo Topolobampo with shrimp, the Mongolian octopus, but above all, she favors aguachile as the go-to sidecar for her miracle cure. For those not in the know, Aguachile is shrimp, cucumber and onion slices in a chili marinade and lime juice, served with tostadas.

so next time you’re in tj and you partied a little too hard, do yourself a favor and give the doctor a visit. you’ll find her taking appointments at restaurante villa marina, located at paseo de los heroes 4449, zona rio
