“GIVE A LITTLE TASTE OF THE “TIJUANENSE” HEART AND TALENT TO THE WORLD, LIKE TIJUANA THERE ARE NO TWO”

I was invited to the inaugural event of Studio 664 on January 4th of

this year, thinking it would be a quick stop, I was very wrong. I was greeted with a bottle of wine, live music, incredible gourmet tostadas, surrounded by a variety of art, local Tijuana and San Diegan artists and personalities… Well, I decided to extend my stay as I ran into good friends and an ambiance that takes you away from your watch. Art is one of the many up and coming trends in the Tijuana Region, from installations, murals, clothing, accessories, music, dance and more, Studio 664 is founded to host all of the above and more as a platform that intends to exploit (in a good way) are and all its disciplines. The idea was born from listening to the frustrations of local artists and designers having difficulty finding formal and informal spaces to expose and sell their art and products. “It was time to make a change and enrich our beautiful Tijuana, where is people don’t go to the museums, we will bring them our gallery” says co-founder Katia (Kat) Sanay.

I asked Sanay what she wants as an end result of this project; “Give a little “taste” of the “Tijuanense” heart and talent to the world, like Tijuana there are no two, if our people know this, let the rest know. We want all who visit to take back a piece of our people and talents with them” says Sanay. The project has interest in collaborating with San Diego artists and organizations; “Tijuana without the United States, would definitely be a different story” Sanay affirmed. There are plans to integrate the Studio with the binational trend and commence tour around the nation (Mexico) at the end of this year. Studio 664 is directed and cooked (literally) by Katia Sanay, with 2 years of plastic arts studies and currently in her second year at Escuela Libre de Arquitectura (ELA). Susana Brijandez serves as the studio curator.

PLAYAS

Chris Sánchez

In our last edition I met with Joel Millman, a local San Diegan residing in Playas de Tijuana, we met briefly to chat about him and Tijuana and discovered there was much more to tell the Tijuana Visitor audience about him, so we scheduled a second meeting where he would show me around as if I was on an Explore Playas tour with him... Photo: CHRIS SÁNCHEZ

I drove to Joel Millman’s home on the 5th floor penthouse in Playas where it is easy to distinguish the Coronado bridge and Point Loma from the continues windows in the living room. Got to meet Daisy (Joel’s dog), extremely well behave and curios. I was welcomed into his place and could not help but notice the Alfa Romeo race car driver pictures all around, turns out Joel was a racecar driver back in the days (not too back in the day’s buddy!)

We jumped in his car and drove to the pier or Malecón (Mal-ehcone) in Spanish, has he explains that what most of the Americans he caters too are surprised about the cleanliness and “normal” environment of the beach, people and cars; “It’s amazing how the media can twist the perception of reality, how the media can change an area… In San Diego there is Coronado, Imperial Beach, Point Loma, you can see how close we are to San Diego from here, if you just landed here where we are now, does this not look like San Diego? I ask, a lot of people go - yeah.. It is almost like when we are at Acuario – gym where I met Joel in Playas – if you don’t know anything you would think you were at a gym in San Diego, beautiful facilities, nice equipment” said Millman”.

We keep on walking as he makes often stops to point out coffee shops, bars, restaurants, art pieces and a hookah lounge as he mentions “one of my goals is to show people that it’s not this scary drug dealer on every corner place, but that is what some people think”, “ I have actually seen more dolphins here in Playas than I have ever seen, I am native San Diegan and I never seen any in San Diego, the Starbucks here is nicer than 80% of the Starbucks in San Diego, it’s absolutely beautiful” he adds, “If all you want to do is stick in the US, you got Walmart, Carl’s Jr., Starbucks, Domino’s Pizza, Home Depot, Costco, there is a number of American Companies here, again, back to the media and the misperception most Americans have of Mexico”. . We walk by a free work out area on the boardwalk that apparently is recent as Joel has not seen it before and stop at a stage set on the boardwalk with Norteño music in the background as a band of 2 lightens up the ambiance, Joel explains the stage is used every weekend with free local concerts and parties, talks about the artistic talent in the city and the freedom artists are given to expose their work in public.

Photo: CHRIS SÁNCHEZ

Beautiful sunny day with a light breeze in Playas de Tijuana,

TIJUANA is a journey fish tacos with "todo" Photo: Erick Falcón - todos santos

We approach the end of our walk, the border between Mexico and the United States and he stops to say “Look, we reached the border, on the other side of the fence is Imperial Beach, I am amazed as a human, a person of the world, that there are some seagulls on both sides of the border, ones speaking English and the others in Spanish” he says joking, “I don’t want to get political but there is already a fence here, there is no reason to build another one, it’s a pretty incredible fence” as he points out the red fence with paintings of artists that have been there before. He will offer to buy snacks from the locals selling there by the fence in a roundabout area where there is a lighthouse and a dolphin sculpture, they have churros, Clamato with Shrimp and points out more seafood restaurants on site.

Photo: CHRIS SÁNCHEZ

Of course as you can see the prices, three fish tacos and a drink for $50 pesos which basically means $2.50 US, if this was in usa it would probably bee $15US, especially this close to the beach

We complete our walk and head back to the car, head to a local eatery for lunch and take a nice drive down the coastline pointing out more of what Baja has to offer, he will take you to Puerto Nuevo (lobster central) and can eat there if you are not starving after your walk in Playas de Tijuana with him. Joel will typically pick you up at the border on the Mexico side but doesn’t mind driving across to pick up people on the US side, he will drop you off at the border on the Mexico side, any day of the week, during the day or evening “My idea is for individuals who have an interest in going to Mexico, who would prefer not to drive since they have no idea where they’re going, what to look for, etc..” At Tijuana Visitor we congratulate Joel for pioneering these efforts as a foreigner that actively promotes Tijuana to our US neighbors, there are many people like Joel that have opted to migrate south as they discover another country than what is typically portrayed.

"MEXICO AND TIJUANA ARE FILLED WITH bEAUTIFUL PEOPLE, A DIVERSE EXTENSIVE CULTURE AND HISTORY, ONE OF THE BEST GASTRONOMIES IN THE WORLD, AND OF COURSE, OPEN DOORS TO ANY TIJUANA VISITOR" Joel millman

RESPECT

Escuela Libre de Arquitectura (School of Free Architecture) is a one of kind institution,

h um I LITY

aimed to form professional vanguardist architects that can influence their beliefs in innovation, respect to the environment, and the utilization of natural resources, social statutes and design technologies at a State, National and International level. Born in 2012 and officially founded in 2014 by Architect Jorge Gracia, his vision was to build an institution with a mission to educate and integrate ethics and competent architects. Impulsing selfawareness in each student to identify their social-human `talent with belonging and loyalty to their city (Tijuana) translates in conceiving innovative and sustainable projects with an end result of common good for each project lead by honesty and responsibility, the ELA states.

ELA is a hands-on big believer, it incorporates 3 live participations where students collaborate and are part of a REAL project with a minimum of 10 weeks so each student can learn how a project flows out in the field and what an active role of an Architect is during a project. Kat Sanay, a second term student at ELA, says she loves the institution because it offers “A study plan that is vival and practical, not just theoretical.

ELA is an organization well on its way to become the transcendental Architect school in the region that their Vision TIJUANA VISITOR states.

10

ESCUELA DE Chris Sanchez

HONESTY

Some organizations that ELA has collaborated in projects with are Tijuana Downtown Delegation, Secretary of Tourism, Codet Foundation, Culinary Art School, and Tijuana Innovadora to mention a few.

TIJUANA visitor The ELA is located in an unusual north zone of Downtown Tijuana area, where building innovation is getting a kickstart, one that (in my opinion) they have a significant influence in. Taking advantage of the low cost rental and sale properties, the institute was able to establish itself financially and most importantly as an icon to Tijuana’s building revolution in dressing up as the metropolitan city it is.

BELONGING At Tijuana Visitor we are proud of institutions like the ELA that recognize the potential of our city in one of the many fields and professions that shape our town, we applaud their values and accolades and thank you for being an inspiration to the new generation of Tijuanenses.

Greg Strangman, a local San Diegan from Del Mar, is the developer behind One Bunk and insists that there’s a lot of Americans who want to visit Tijuana but do not plan to stay because they do not know where. Mr. Strangman is collaborating with Tijuana Architect Jorge Garcia from Escuela Libre de Arquitectura (ELA) who mentions the need of aggressive investment needed in Tijuana to prove that density in the city is the way to go to prove that a car is not needed to move in Tijuana.

Currently One Bunk TJ, located on Revolution Avenue between Third & Fourth Avenue, is under renovation and scheduled to open doors this summer, offering 7 rooms with an estimated $75 to $150 dollars a night, all their properties can be booked through Airbnb. One Bunk represents one of the many projects and visionary investments from developers outside of Tijuana that identify the potential that the city has, and like Mr. Strangman, are jumping on board while properties in the market are still at opportunity rates. FESTS & FRESH LOTES rUDY LÓPEZ

Spring marks the beginning of the craft beer festivals in Baja and the first one of the season is none other than the Ensenada Beer Festival, recently named Best Beer Festival by Best of Baja 2016. The festival features one of the largest gatherings of independent craft breweries, including local (Ensenada, Tijuana, Mexicali), national, and international brands. Not far behind the great craft beer selection is the excellent food options which makes for endless pairing combinations. This year’s edition will take place March 18 from 2pm to midnight at the picturesque Centro Cultural Riviera del Pacifico. The venue is located across the street from the cruise ship terminal and within steps of Ensenada’s historic downtown. As one of the most sought after festivals, it is encouraged that you buy tickets in advance to avoid long lines. Tickets go on sale in Tijuana, generally at places like BCB Tasting Room and Templo Ramuri a few weeks beforehand. While the festival is certainly the central focus of the weekend, the days prior are reserved for workshops and the Copa Cervecero del Pacifico competition. Winners are announced at the festival and can be sampled while supplies last. This event is definitely the opportunity to make it a weekend experience, with the Valle de Guadalupe nearby. Make sure you check hotel availability soon!.

tHE NEW SPOT In the last edition we spoke about Plaza Fiesta and its burgeoning craft beer scene. On February Beer Balcony will take over the space formally operated by El Sauzal. Cerveza Artesanal 5&10 and Muñeca Prieta Cerveza Artesanal are joining forces with DLM, a draft line management company that is beginning to foray into distribution and producing brews of their own, for this latest venture in the Tijuana craft beer community.

Expect to find a good mix of styles from this group.

TIJUANA is Gastronomy Photo: CINE TONALÁ TIJUANA

the theater is focused on showcasing short and independent films from all over the world, a feature that has not been adopted by anyone else in the city and makes this place special. Cine Tonalá is the place to be at since October 15th of last year when its doors opened. The Tijuana location is the third to be opened by over 30 cultural enthusiastic investors, after opening in Mexico City and Bogota, Colombia. Conveniently located on the famous Tijuana Revolucion Avenue between 7th & 6th avenue, as you walk in the first thing you see is modern hipster bar serving craft beers, popular cocktails and house specialty drinks, you can lounge in the bar while you wait for your film to begin. The mezzanine has tables and spaces to have a meeting or get away from the first floor crowd, if you desire. The real kicker (for me and for this section) is on the third floor, another bar? Yes, food? YES!.. Open Kitchen?? Yep, delight yourself watching the chef and cooks prep your meals, the menu ranges from Mole BBQ ribs, a house burger, Tuna Birria, Grilled Rib Tacos, Cauliflower tostadas, and many more options for all tastes. If you are a dessert fan, ask for the “Imposible” , it’s a Mexican delight, trust me. The high ceiling and open concept let you enjoy a view of Tijuana with an ambiance that has no competition (yet..), music is light modern and a lot of jazz influence, surely to mellow the ear.

thursday nights expect a live jazz band, you will love it, get there at 8pm if you want a table, it is a hotspot and that night is surely to be busy and enjoyable.

XOLOS INSIDER

On November 11th, 2007, one of

the most awaited dreams for the city of Tijuana came true, it’s very own soccer team was born, against the well renowned PUMAS team from Mexico City, taking the Game at Home in the Tijuana Caliente Stadium for the win by beating them on a 2-1 scoreboard. For some Tijuana locals the transition was smooth, I mean of course! If you were born in Tijuana why would you not root for the Tijuana Xolos!! This wasn’t the reality for a lot of Tijuanenses as family influences for teams from their native towns had always been present, in family gatherings to watch the Guadalajara Chivas VS El America from Mexico City (or CDMX) classic game, these 2 teams had the city split in 2 and now a Tijuana born team came to life.. Like a 3rd newborn baby, Xolos quickly won favoritism in town as they consistently move up the ranks

On May 21st of 2011 the team rose up from second division (minor league) to first division (pro league) making themselves the first Tijuana and Baja California Team to ever rise up to the Pro Division. It took Xolos 1 year to crown the city name with their team, champion of the Mexico Pro League on December 2nd of 2012, the greatest victory of the team so far, tying with Pachuca team as the fastest team to win the championship after ascending to the maximum circuit. Tijuana Visitor congratulates our XOLOS team for their efforts, championships and thanks the team for lifting our sport spirit and putting Tijuana on yet another important map!
