TIJUANA is a journey

photo: festiarte el punto del arte facebook

Celebrating its 11th edition this year, “Festiarte” is one of the most important art festivals in the city of Tijuana, it began in a park in Playas

de Tijuana and has now grown to 2 events split in the year, the most important one now taking place in the Tijuana Cultural Center (CECUT) for a second round and a follow up one in Playas de Tijuana where it all started. I have the pleasure of knowing in a personal manner one of the key founders of this event, Mr. Cesar Borja, dad to one of my best friends, tattoo and visual artist Czar Kandinsky, both father and son born into the arts and recently present at San Diego’s Little Italy’s Artwalk in April of this year. I have personally seen the struggle and the persistence Mr. Borja has put in to make Art part of Tijuana’s cultural heritage, and it is paying off to the city and the people of Tijuana, my people.

FESTIARTE

chris sÁnchez

It is funny to sit down and interview a person I have known for over 17 years since his son and I became friends in a new Junior High School for us both, freshly booted out of another one… (but that’s another story I can tell if you ask me in person haha), but it is always a pleasure to listen to Mr. Borja as he tells you with extreme excitement and passion about his festival, something to admire.

el punto del arte (the point of art)

What is Festiarte? It is the perfect representation of what makes up the artistic-cultural community of Tijuana, being a young city, the great majority of artists of all genres are intertwined in a familiar, friendly way or sharing work experiences of more than three decades. We have created a dream event where it is not measured rigidly, a multitudinous event that changes and adapts to the creative situation of the city, created by artists for artists where there is no particular selection, at the time a genre is born in the city, Festiarte generates an area to accommodate the needs of its artists. At Festiarte, our priority is the artist. More on the Event that will be taking place from Friday June 9th through Sunday June 11th. photo: conectando tijuana facebook

June 9th, 10th & 11th

TIJUANA is a journey

What type of personalities can be found at Festiarte? Artists that are currently resurrecting dead areas of the city, lost areas or wrong paths where violence is taken and given a spin with the paintbrush, with music or simply existing, causing the opening exponentially with cultural centers, cultural centers and workshops by independent groups that have generated large groups of young artists, who are now taking command and giving continuity to what is established and improving day by day.

Mision? To continue as the ideal event for regional artists and international guests where it provides the artist with the tools for free expression with a propositional and inclusive character, thus strongly supporting the generation of a cultural offer, contribute to tourism development, produce an increase of collectors, everything within a full multitudinal event that not only benefits the regional trade but also promotes new positive creations within our city.

What is the expected attendance? Anywhere from 30,000 to 50,000 over the entirety of the event. It is worth mentioning that it is not only a house for individual art, but also independent cultural projects that in turn generate more artistic processes in all its genres and facets. Making of Festiarte, at least once a year an event where all the arts converge and most of the doers who work continuously in the positive cultural contribution of Tijuana.

Vision? To obtain an autonomous festival, sustainable with greater and better tools for its organizational functionality, focused on growth, supporting not only independent artistic talents but providing the ideal work environment to continue to generate more professional producers and cultural promoters.

photo: czar kandinsky

IN THIS FESTIVAL YOU CAN FIND VISUAL, MUSIC, FASHION, POETRY, HANDICRAFTS AND GASTRONOMY, ALL OF THESE WITH A FORM OF ART… To generate much greater audience growth and provide the ideal environment to encourage greater investment in independent projects; As well as to promote processes that are developed through the coexistence between public and cultural producers. As well as creating monthly processes of cultural promotions from individual exhibitions, free medium events, public art, murals, etc. And continue to support and impel the artist continuously. Festiarte 2017 in its 11th and 12th anniversary aims to grow in content and infrastructure, where the main goal is to unify and support the support of more than 250 visual artists, 125 groups in its 6 stages and its new areas from which a solidification is visualized for The 2017. If you are into Art (and if you are not… you should be.), this is yet another great event in our Mega San Diego/Tijuana Region that you will be able to find and connect art expressions that know no borders. Hope to see you there!!! Saludos!

Interview with Dr. Angel Serrano

Angel Smile Chris Sánchez

Dr. Angel is an Odontologist with over a 10 year trajectory in the “Tooth Fairy” business

(no pun intended). In his Tijuana Clinic it is important to know that PTO’s from the US are accepted, making this yet another reason for Health Tourism from the States to visit Tijuana, even with Dental Insurance, going to Tijuana will still be cheaper...go figure. A few questions I made to Angel for your pleasure and knowledge.

Services offered What inspired you to become a dentist? The inspiration of being a dentist was always the admiration of my father who motivated me to want to follow in his footsteps, and not only that, but when I saw everything that involves being a dentist, I liked the idea of improving smiles, relieving pains and the surgical side of everything really appealed to me.

TIJUANA is hEALTHY What is your trajectory, what do you do? With my dad, at the same time I did specialized in Orthodontics, taking other more specific Diplomas complementing my specialty to update constantly, and then we decided to start independently My Wife and I in this project “Angel Smile” offering our services, applying all the experience and knowledge acquired giving a Dentistry service of quality and honesty. What is the purpose of what you do? We want to offer a reliable option to our patients to acquire a quality treatment, confident in our efficiency and cleanliness of our facilities at an affordable price What kind of people can benefit from your services / products? We all need a head dentist, since it is recommended, a professional cleaning every 6 months as a method of prevention as well as any treatment to existing oral diseases, there are also aesthetic treatments which can be performed such as: bleaching, bichectomy, etc. Without leaving aside the same orthodontics which are not only for adolescent patients as it was commonly created, but for any age.

What are the benefits of visiting the dentist? The benefits are to have a healthy mouth and a better selfesteem, to have a better smile.

Tijuana dentists have been famous with US Tijuana Visitors for many years, offering an alternative cost in products and services and saving you some extra “moola” to put those shiny chompers to work with a nice dinner in TJ while you are at it!

POPULAR CULTURE

+

MUCOTI (acronym for Museo

The museum is housed in what was once the “Le Chateu” restaurant in the eighties, and the parking area was once the “Nica-oh” bar. It is a remembrance and respect to the history of Tijuana. There are two museums housed in the same building, located in the downtown area on 7th street in the city, surrounded by legendary buildings such as the Jai Alai fronton, Cine Bujazán, Cine Roble and governmental and cultural activities such as the Cine Tonalá and the Secretary of Economy. They are operated and administered by Museo de la Siete, A.C., made up of Tijuanenses committed to our city and determined to take the best side of our society through cultural and didactic activities and showcase it. MUCOTI & MULLME is a museum of popular culture, where the everyday life of what Tijuanenses collect as well as the activity of “Wrestling” (Aka “Lucha Libre”) for 70 years in this city is showcased. Several experts participated in the museography, many meetings, talks and visits with directors of other museums such as the “Museum of the Ancient Toy”, Mujam, El Estanquillo and the “Museum of the Object of the Object” or ” Modo” of Mexico City. All this with the aim of defining the furniture and accessories to achieve the best possible visualization and protection of the collections.

MUCO MU CHRIS SÁNCHEZ

As soon as I arrived Miguel Ángel Pérez Ramírez, a local Tijuanense and collector greeted us at the door and we had the honor to follow him while he explained each space of the museum and the why of it, born of a personal collection of Tijuanense friends, who after years of accumulating curiosities decided to expose these to the public, instead of having them in a basement where no one other than the collector could admire.

THERE ARE 3 LEVELS TO THIS MUSEM

It has a parking area where events such as mass 1 day exhibitions can take place, “Lucha Libre” or wrestling functions (yes, you read well, wrestling in downtown Tijuana), and a swap meet for collectors. In the interior is the reception, which was reused and modified from previously being a bar and a cake bakery, there are bathrooms, a souvenir shop, central courtyard illuminated by a stained glass window that was part of the original construction which was rehabilitated and reinforced, the exhibition area of the collections houses super heroes, promotional items, magazines, albums, toys, soft drink and milk containers, train models, planes and trucks among other things.

First Level

Museum of Mexican Wrestling (MULLME for its acronym in Spanish),

del Coleccionista de Tijuana aka Tijuana Collectors Museum)

Second Level

TI+ LLME

+

photo: frida sofia zv

In this level you will find the private collection of the museum, made up of more than 6,000 articles among which we find masks, hair (it was typical that when defeating your opponent will rip a piece of your hair as a souvenir of victory), figures, cups, props of various local and national arenas, billboards, wrestling albums, recreation of a dressing room, magazines, movies related to wrestling, promotional items, keyrings, containers, trophies and many more things related to this sport-show that is so ingrained in Tijuana and in Mexico. There is an interactive area where you can enjoy regional wrestling photos and billboards, which have been collected and selected so that the connoisseur and visitor know the evolution of this show.

NOT ONLY UNIQUE IN TIJUANA BUT ALL OF MEXICO

Third Level

This level has the capacity for up to 100 seated people and can be used for exhibitions, workshop, conferences; Has restrooms and storage area for furniture, such as tables and chairs. The first exhibition that is on display is called “Recorrido Estudiantil” or “Student Tour”, by the visual artist “Silvia Tejeda”, and is made up of 25 pieces that were made through the recycling of public transportation tickets. This gallery of the museum will have as its theme the things related to collecting. The view from the balcony is imposing, I could see and appreciate the famous Avenida Revolución with the Jai Alai fronton in the background. It has outdoor areas complementary to the gallery, where you can install furniture for outdoor workshops and tastings.

The SOCIAL IMPACT that the museum intends to have is to stimulate the skills and knowledge for educational purposes in Tijuanense childhood and youth through collecting. We want to provide a society committed to the knowledge of the nature of everyday objects and the history of the “Lucha Libre” or Wrestling show in Tijuana, motivating their knowledge and study. If you are into collecting, learning, entertaining yourself or all of the above, this museum is a must, as it is unique not only to Tijuana, but all of Mexico. Don’t forget to be ready to get in the ring, YES!! There is a mini-ring designed and specified like an actual “Lucha Libre” ring that you can play, wrestle and take pictures in! Oh yeah!... In its first phase the museum will be open Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 6 pm. School visits can be programmed with previous coordination. photo: frida sofia zv

Cost: $50.00 for Adults, and MIGUEL ÁNGEL PÉREZ $25.00 for children and seniors. Hours: 10:00 am - 6:00 pm

TIJUANA is Gastronomy Classic French Toast

PRAGA

C O F F E E B I ST R O JULIAN QUI

In Tijuana we have spaces full of culture, art and social expression, Praga Coffee Bistro is one of these peculiar spaces. You can check them out online, but just like everything else in life, it does not compare to a live experience, the concept and interior design make you travel to another place you may or may have not been before, you won’t even remember you are sitting in the middle of Tijuana’s iconic Revolution Avenue. So what’s the deal? Praga makes “Coffee Bar meets Bistro” a reality, pairing the two in just the right amounts to make 1 concept out of 2. It adapts to our Baja California region and seeks a diverse audience in tastes, age and culture. I have had Praga in the corner of my eye for a while in regards to writing about them, so I will gladly share some details on the menu and what Praga offers to it’s Tijuana locals and Visitors. You can start your day at Praga (if you day starts at 8am), order an exquisite cup of coffee, 3 crop roasted, in their own toaster that is located just a 3 minute walk from “Praga” at “Franz Praga” on famous 6th avenue (where the Tijuana Downtown Party zone is), between Revolution and Flores Magon Streets. NOTE: The toaster is not open to the Public (yet), their coffee is exclusively distributed to Praga, Franz Praga and Cubo Bistro in CECUT. When developing their menu local Chef Nadya Fernández, took demanding palates into consideration, she is the author of Praga’s menu, and has under her responsibility the famous and unique “Caesars Restaurant” and “Cubo Bistro”, this is not a task for a common Chef since Caesars is one of the oldest standing Tijuana Restaurants with the heavy and honor responsibility of hosting the birth of World known Caesars Salad and jumping to Cubo Bistro, a contemporary cuisine proposal that unifies classic tastes with modern pairings. Enough!, I get carried away each time… Eggs benedict; check! Artisan bread, smoked ham and dutch sauce infused with chipotle. The desserts are all made by local breadmasters “El Artisan”.

TRY THEIR DIFFERENT COFFEE METHODS Feeling a little Binational? Order the “Hermann Eggs”, Hash Brown with bacon and cheddar cheese, refried beans and Mexican sauce. You can also try the Julie eggs, mounted on fried potatoes dipped in chorizo sauce, roasted black bell pepper and smoked pepper. I also recommend the “Egg Ciabatta”, if you are getting “Hangry”, this ciabatta is a good sized Egg Cake basically, with onion, avocado, lettuce, a touch of house aioli, mounted on fresh made Ciabatta bread. And if you are feeling Mexican you are absolutely safe and will be happy to order classic green chilaquiles in tomatillo sauce and coriander with a touch of peanuts (yes peanuts), or red chilaquiles with a delicious mixture of red onion, chilli peppers, panela cheese and sour cream. Egg Ciabatta

You can also find classic French toast with maple syrup and homemade bread or some delicious hot cakes, bathed in red fruit sauce spiked with whip cream. I recommend the terrace if you want to relax, enjoy the view and enjoy the world pass by, you will be entertained with what can pass you by when you sit still in Revolution Avenue, it’s like a box of chocolates, you never know… ok, ok you know what I mean.

EL CHOLO SEAFOOD chris sanchéz Photo: mariscos el cholo facebook

Located in front of another favorite spot I have wrote about in the first editions of Tijuana Visitor, it is 1 block from Revolution Avenue, I must confess I was skeptical at first, not because of the set-up (I have eaten in hole-in-the-wall places that most wouldn’t dare and had some of the best gastronomical experiences in my life), I had just never been drawn to it. A couple of friends suggested/insisted I should visit, so I did. When you get there, “El Cholo” is typically serving it up in his ocean blue street cart topped with white and brown clams with a large (or “Venti” for some) side of fresh oysters, clients surround the cart, you will be lucky to find a spot, “El Cholo” is busy enough that he rents a space right in front of his cart where there are some additional seats and tables, and his secret “grunt” staff in a back prep-kitchen getting the seafood grub ready to fulfill the anxious and sometimes (or most of the times) hungover or “three sheets to the wind” customers looking for a seafood fix remedy and enjoy while eating it.

you can eat ceviche tostadas made of shrimp or fish, shrimp or mixed cocktails, oysters, clams prepared with veggies, all with the special touch of “el Cholo”. Don’t tell him I told you but his “El Cholo’s” real name is Hector (don’t ask for more info, you won’t get it”), he has been running Mariscos El Cholo for more than thirty years. He started in a building across his current location, buying fish from the fish market at the end of 6th avenue and making raw dishes with them. “CASH ONLY” so make sure you stop at the ATM and Money Exchange house before you plan to eat there. This is a popular stop for Taxi drivers and Police officers, I am not sure if I need to say more, rule of thumb: “Yo ho ho!, where ye see taxi drivers and Cops huttle for food in Mexico, ye must eat for a booty ye shall find” (“Booty” is pirate talk for Treasure...FYI, no pun intended). Writing and remembering “El Cholo’s” spot brought a little bit of a pirate side on this food report, AHOY!!

BEER BEER BEER BEER

TIJUANA is Beer CRAFT BEER Expo will be held at the picturesque Plaza Monumental de Playas de Tijuana.

With the Ensenada Beer Fest behind us, it is officially beer festival season. Next up is Tijuana’s Expo Cerveza Artesanal (Craft Beer Expo).

Much like San Diego has become The Capital of Craft, Tijuana has emerged as the epicenter of the craft beer revolution in Mexico and the Craft Beer Expo will serve as its showcase. This year’s Expo will be held at the picturesque Plaza Monumental de Playas de Tijuana, the seaside bullring, on June 2 and 3. Presale tickets are $200.00 pesos ($10 dlls) and $250.00 pesos ($13 dlls) at the door. One of the distinguishing features of the Expo is that brewery participation is by invitation only, ensuring attendees receive only the best beers currently available in the Northern Baja region. You can expect somewhere in the neighborhood of 60 beer stands as well as 20 food stands, providing pairing opportunities to satisfy any palate. Perennial favorites and recent award-winners Insurgente, Border Psycho, Fauna and Wendlandt are among those that will be present.

BEER, BBEEEE RR , B E E R B E E R EVERYWHERE E V E R Y WBHEEERRE BEER BEER 15 BEER Photo: expo cerveza artesanal facebook

Another hallmark of the Expo is its entertainment line-up. This year’s headliners will be El Gran Silencio and Latin Grammy-nominated DLD. The lineup will also feature local bands and DJs to provide a musical backdrop to the beer and food offering. The Expo is co-produced by Baja Craft Beers, Tijuana’s largest distributor of craft beer and operator of BCB Tasting Room featuring 42 beers on tap and 300 bottles of craft beer from throughout Mexico and the world. Speaking of BCB Tasting Room…on April 28 BCB hosted a workshop for craft brewers hosted by the US Department of Agriculture and the US Consulate in Tijuana. Speakers from the US Grain Council and New Belgium Brewing in Colorado spoke about sustainable practices for the brewing industry and how to make craft beer more eco-friendly. This cooperation highlights how the craft beer industry builds bridges instead of walls between two countries and the importance of the cooperative relationship that exists in border regions, most clearly demonstrated by the San Diego-Tijuana metropolitan area
