ESQUINA SARA & NERO48 Kick it off!

oke up on Saturday 7/2 having absolutely no idea what I was going to do that day except visiting my Podiatrist, figured my feet take me everywhere so maintenance is not to crazy of an idea. I messaged my new friend Lilian Encinas, a local Tijuanense Artist/Designer that I met (no details on that, short term memory issues), to ask her about an event I saw her post call NERO48 that was taking place in “Esquina Sara” or “SARA CORNER” (not from Terminator, duh!). Anyway… I asked her when the event was going down, and if she could hook me up with the building people and she wass all about it, come on over… I’m like, now?, yep… I get there, and it’s crazy!.

A pop up store event was taking place in 2 floors and the rooftop (yeah, it’s pretty pimp), from Cadillac to Ceramics and Apparel/Jewelry to Food mainly from Tijuana, there were some artists from differents parts of Mexico and Artists from Tijuana and Mexico that live in New York and other crazy cities. The goods were awesome and the party on the rooftop was poppin, with Chef Javier Plascencia putting out some mad baja-med skills together with local breweries, a mezcal, wine and donuts (does that not sound effin perfect?), oh! and top that off with a ridiculous view of Tijuana right smack in the middle of Downtown Revolution Avenue, enough said, oh wait, the DJ set was on point!.

TIJUANA is FRESH NERO48 also offered micro-workshops during the weekend, some of them on basic things like, what are the cultural and creative industries?, What is an entrepreneur?, Creativity and Economic Development?, Creativity and our City, Cultural and Creative Industries Administration, What is a Startup and how does it Work?. All this with the aim of supporting and stimulating the cultural and creative industry in the city and outside of it to add on to the bettering of the image of Tijuana and provide a recreational space to our binational community and stimulate “shop local”.

The Mastermind behind this: Illya Haro, a local and beautiful Tijuanense (currently residing in San Francisco) that founded the “Domingos de Diseño” (Design Sundays), which I wrote about in a previous edition, 7 years ago (the founding of it, not when I wrote about it) when she began to become aware of local visual artists developing design ideas, from purses to ceramics, leather goods, etc.. The idea was to provide them a space to further develop those skills. Now, after 7 years and many designs and creativity after, Illya became aware of a new artist need/concern, Where and How Do I Sell My Stuff?, And just like that (and probably a lot of hard work by Illya and her team…) a store Pops Up as NERO48 for 2 full days with vendors, workshops, beer, food, friends, family and beautiful view, all this combined to close with great success!! .

- Private Offices - Fully Furnished - Wi-Fi - Individual Modules - Coffee area - Meeting Room - Coffee Break Daily - Projection Area - Copying Area - Reception - Terrace - Elevator - Night-time and closed-circuit safety element

I stole some time from some of the artists to give you guys an idea of what went down and the level of artistry, quality and craftsmanship our locals are proudly producing: Punto Verde Ceramics by Fernanda Uribe: a local Tijuanense who created her brand in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, hand-formed and painted by the artist. www.fernandauribe.com Lilo Encinas by Lilian Encinas: a local Tijuanense that produces her own leather bags and handpainted furniture incorporating art with fashion creating a line of functional art. Right on the main beach boulevard of Playas de Tijuana across the Malecón

(pier) Lifestyle Hostel stands out from the buildings next to it since it is one of the newest additions on the block (right on time as Playas is beginning to see its own boom), can’t miss it, from the exterior I felt already comfortable as the colors are light, beach lifestyle came to mind and began to feel a bit nostalgic from my (as my friends call it as they give me a hard time) “Cancun Days”, but it mostly took me back to the beach front bar colors from a Caribbean Island, dope. I was greeted by “Kahos”, a massive XL Bully (huge pit bull) that is most definitely imposing and was posing for a pic I took at the entrance, dont panic, he’s a friendly one. You may or not hear an occasional struggle and thump as you are chilling in the lounge, that will be some Jiu Jitsu action happening on the floor above, David Herrera is a professional martial arts bad ass that has worked with people like Anderson Silva (cool), as well as an owner and partner with his son Ray Herrera, who happens to be the Tattoo Artist in the shop found inside.

Pool table, dart board, surfboards, fish tank, albino frog, bar (only for guests and clients), murals and tattoo shop is what you will find immediately as you walk in.

I was personally impressed by his artwork, he began hanging around tattoo shops at 8, began his apprenticeship at age 14 and if I my memory serves me well, he began tattooing at 17, his first tattoo is incredible, hands down, I am putting my piece together that I will have him do on me, he’s that good. Ray was kind enough to show me around and tell me a bit of the story behind their place, the idea was born after he and his father traveled to Panama, Costa Rica and Nicaragua, staying always in hostels and connecting with people, sparking a desire of offering this kind of service to a community, and they picked Playas (THANK YOU). Incorporating martial arts, they are driven to positively impact the community around them, and encouraging them to join their classes and plant the seeds of discipline, respect, health in to their lifestyle and spread it. So, if you are looking to visit Tijuana and want to stay over for a night, or 2 or 30, please consider Lifestyle Hostel in Playas (beach) for your stay, the hosts are awesome and the ambiance is just right if you need to relax, train, meet new people, or just curious of what the heck is going on in TJ.

Chris Sánchez

(Holistic...you get it.)

Holistic medicine has been around for quite a while, some holistic practices are well registered going back 5000 years from the Chinese to Hippocrates who live in the 4th Century BC and stressed the healing power or nature. The common idea between holistic practitioners is that healing is most effective when you heal the whole person, rather than focusing on a specific illness. As Socrates said in the 4th century BC. “The part can never be well unless the whole is”. I have been blessed to come across holistic medicine in my own town and family for a few years now, discovering the power of it when visiting a cousin of mine while I was stressing out (probably about some girlfriend or something…) when I was probably around 18 o 19 years old (NOT THAT LONG AGO), I went in her house and she immediately asked me what was wrong? She grabbed a pendulum and had me stand straight as she passed it in front of me on each of my chakra points (had no idea what they were at the time).

After verifying that 99% of what I was dealing with was in my head, I was laid down, had some strange rocks placed on each chakra points and she began meditating and praying (not to any specific religion) and I began to relax and fell in a deep sleep....... I woke up after 15 to 20 minutes and was amazed, confused and surprised… I was no longer feeling stressed, my head was no longer about to explode and I didn’t want to jump of a bridge anymore!! If anything, my mind was clear and my thoughts began to compose in a way that made sense and simplified my way of looking at whatever that situation that had me going crazy, it was simple and I was going over it too many times, but for some reason or another I went to the right place at the right time.

TIJUANA is hEALTHY Miriam Sanoja is a holistic therapist based out of Tijuana, sat down with her to chat about what she is doing to help people heal, as a whole. Here are some questions I made to her: What sparked and inspired you to do what you do? I had the message coming years without realizing, after the transcendence of my father, I traveled to to Spain where I finally followed the message and spent 6 years mastering it, starting with yoga and relaxation classes, as well as meditation, and taking alternative therapies, to heal the passing of my father. What is the trajectory of the project and what do you do? After my healing, some energy therapies came to me. Reiki Level 1,2,3, and mastery, Energy Polarization, Meditation, Mantras, Mudras, Spiritual Healing, Bioquantum, Access Bars, Radiesthesia, Geobiology and Ear Coning. What is the purpose of what you do? Heal the body, mind and soul. What kind of people can benefit from your services? All people regardless of belief, age, sex. Holistic therapies are preventive in case it does not reach the physical body, if in the physical body there is some disease, the energy will know how to reach the patient’s needs. What are examples of specific benefits one can obtain from holistic therapies? Health …. If you do not sleep or do not rest when sleeping, if you suffer anxiety, depression, anguish, emotional and physical illness, holistic therapies can help balance these out.

We live in a time of imbalance, stress, schedules, appointments, payments, wait times to fill paperworks, flat tires, check in’s, check outs, break ins, break ups, error messages, sales goals, phone calls, voice mails, current statuses, junk food, keeping up with the Joneses and many other ridiculous, crazy but somethings necessary evils that pile up on top of our mind, body and soul… that we forget about someone that is very (in my opinion “THE MOST”) important, ME. We remember “ME” when the illness gets there, when the sadness hits, and then, when things start breaking down we begin to look for healing, this is a good thing, a better one is to practice healing constantly, so to prevent getting to breaking points. If you are in town and feel like a little healing won’t be too much of an extra while you Visit Tijuana, Tijuana can help you heal… Namaste.

That's why the idea of Eazy co-workspace in Avenida Revolución his born, an extremely fresh concept where the goal is to strengthen business relationships in the city and help facilitate key development services for entrepreneurs and growing users. As for architectural concept and design, it was decided to respect the Sara building as it is a historical name with over 35 years of presence in the city and in that location, it was proposed to rescue the building respecting the trends of the area. Talking with Architect Gualajara he shared a few comments; “Every detail of the building is carefully thought out for the user to feel comfortable as well as the customers of the users". In design we established and rescued the concept of Sara, we developed fresh ideas with materials, textures and colors that do not have an expiration date, the style cannot be defined, because many people call it, urban, industrial, new york, contemporary, a typecasting style will not define the design of the building, since we used a fusion of contemporary art showing respect to the history of the building since it is a building of more than 40 years of existence. The integration of the essence and the environment merge the design of this project. Large spaces, high ceilings, graphic design and fresh art is what we can find in Sara building. Liliana Álvarez Bravo commercial and marketing manager talked to us about the facility, the offer, the project and its advantages. In the building there are companies of different markets, but creative companies predominate, one of our strong customers is cabify, which are right on their momentum in our city.

“ dificio Sara” (The Sara Building) was born as an idea (like all others) of remodeling and revitalization the Tijuana downtown area as the main objective, the building was acquired by the Cosmopolitan group approximately 4 years ago, the idea was always to identify the need of Tijuana and its People to help strengthen the image of the Downtown area through an integral project, from the also famous “Plaza Santa Cecilia” located in on first street (aka Calle Primera), to the Revolution district on 8th Street, initially thought as an executive office space, but the project took a turn fusing it into a Co-Working Space, of excellent quality, totally upgraded facilities with accessibility at low costs, in a cozy, fresh and urban environment.

The Sara building has a facility for places and students to rent spaces on a monthly basis, with all the comforts included at low costs, provide office furniture, as well as common spaces where coexistence and creation of ideas are a daily happening thing. Open spaces are offered as well, which can be rented by the day and by the month, with a totally free environment to be used for a specific project that users need to develop, or from using the entire boardroom to using a shared space to work freely. We are a platform that adopts users who do not have the economic ability to rent an optimal space due to the high costs, we are an option that cares for the needs of the entrepreneurs and of all the people who need an appropriate area to give the professional image to their working life.

We handle an internal application to make reservations for meeting rooms, very attractive and comfortable for the realization of projects. For our foreign and local visitors, we have a one-day pass for those express work meetings when sometimes you do not have a space where you can make presentations for a single day, these alternatives are offered to all our visitors.

We have 24 hour security where users can make use of the facilities when they need them at the time that they need. The Coworking space can be used to do product testing as well as presentations or conferences, since it has high definition projectors, furniture and equipment for all users. Eazy workspace uses “eazy” coins, which are used to use the printing equipment or boardrooms, as well as having a mail service in the building, this service is exclusive to any user who is already part of Eazy workspace. Private spaces for 2 people and up to 8 people are available.

Thanks to the warm acceptance of the local public, the private offices are rented, but at the moment the project is open to all users who need to use the facilities in the area of coworking. The essence of the project is to fill the center of Tijuana with great buildings so that people are encouraged to continue investing in restructuring the good image of Tijuana and its economic growth. What follows with our projects is the housing issue in the downtown area, which will be the next step to complement the project phase of the Cosmopolitan group under the tutelage and command of architect Gustavo Gualajara and manager Liliana Álvarez Bravo always offering a warm environment, innovative and contemporary in every detail, to make a pleasant and comfortable stay for all users, they will soon be sharing this new information. THE ORIGIN OF

M I S C E G E NAT I O N - CHRIS SÁNCHEZ -

I have been waiting to write about this restaurant for while, waiting for the right moment, as it is an experience that many Tijuana Visitors should enjoy, a place with the Spanish Colonial Architecture that can found all across Mexico in the most important and elder cities, I had the opportunity to travel through Mexico for a 6 month personal sabbatical period and covered about 80% of the country, and Casa Plasencia is the one that captures the essence of the miscegenation of Mexico and Spain in a restaurant setting and in the kitchen. Casa Plasencia celebrates 16 years of this gastronomic adventure, with the vision and direction of Mr. Juan José Plascencia Félix aka “Don Tana”, who brought together some of his chefs stars, that have collaborated with him in previous years and after experimenting with other styles of cuisine (specifically the Italian), he was able to make his dream come true and to explore Mediterranean cuisine, with a focus on Spanish cuisine combining and creating a fusion with Mexican cuisine, this is what he named “Mexiterraneo” (Mexiterranean). From Don Tana’s first trip to Spain, he fell in love with its kitchen, cooked in a rustic cuisine, everything served in pots for sharing, he is now a fan of slow-cooked piglets, with this, he saw a tendency and need for cooking a little more “gourmet”, small portions, he wanted to do the opposite and rescue these traditions, with more elaborate dishes, well served, with millenary preparation techniques. To date Don Tana has completed more than 15 visits to Spain, always in search of new places, taverns, from very traditional places where cooking remains traditional, in wood ovens, simmering slowly, truly “old school”.

The most classic plate of the house is absolutely the “Suckling pig”, “The Paella” is a must, and the Beef Ribs you have to try. We have the Mexican part, where they excel in the casseroles, with chicarrón, firewood lamb, suckling pig taquitos, rib tacos, and has an invention that is called the twist taco, between Mediterranean and Mexican, it’s lamb, with fresh cooked pot beans. The concept of this place is 100 percent Don Tana’s, is a testimony of all those culinary trips that he has undertaken, shared trips with family, friends and his team, this is when they talk about experience in the quality of their kitchen and products.

Their restaurants are visited by international diners from USA, Canada, Spain, China and Japan to mention a few. “The same people from Spain tell us that our Mexican fusion is exquisite, since it does not ask for anything from the great cuisines of their region” says Plasencia. The concept of service is to do an excellent team work, giving the best service of excellence and quality, it is all work which is complemented by good cooking. Casa Plasencia has two floors, the dining room where you can quietly enjoy a family meal, or some business meeting, and the upper floor with a more relaxed atmosphere, it is widely used for “tapas evenings”, have a drink, be with friends or with your partner, it is all about having a good time. If you like dinner and entertainment, there is live music, Trio nights are Saturdays from 9pm to 11pm. Casa Plasencia is a must for all you “foodies” out there, if you are into Mexican, you will be into Casa Plasencia.

In the home kitchen, Plascencia, despite being born in a Mediterranean context with European cuisine influence, in this case “Spanish”, you can identify several key factors to be able to evolve and include products of Mexican tradition, such as corn tortillas, chili, beans, and more. The Plascensia’s always work with the seasons, when it is September, the patriotic month, without canceling serving the main menu, it adapts a Mexican menu 100%, a variety of dishes is offered for that occasion.

Tres Fuegos comes with a fresh urban hipster touch to it, open

kitchen, Zona Rio main roundabout view form a second floor with large open windows to let the fresh air in, Large beautiful murals by local artist “Rod Villa”. On the art side, it is foreseen to have the place open to artists to showcase their art anytime they like (with proper arrangements of course) in an effort to impulse local art as Tijuana artists struggle with a higher supply than demand for art, locally. It is absolutely free for artist to showcase for a whole month with no fee on sales, all piece sales and profits made at Tres Fuegos are 100% for the artists, this is becoming a common trend with local businesses.

But the place was not the only detail that captured my attention, I was greeted by Larissa Barragal the marketing director for Tres Fuegos and was immediately offered something to drink, I asked for water and Frida (our lead designer) looked at me weird (and you probably made the same face as you read it) so I immediately changed my order to a beer of course, glad I did too. There are no screens here (like), it is highly encourage to interact with your fellow humans, the music is set just right to allow for mellow conversation and it was perfect as I sat down with Chef and Partner Jorge L. Garcia (Chido Man) to talk a bit about “Tres Fuegos” and what it's all about, my run down:

CHRIS SÁNCHEZ

TRES FUEGOS THREE FIRE BREWERY

Tres Fuegos was born as a side project 2-½ years ago and evolved naturally with Tijuana's Beer Boom as the beer that was being brewed kept getting better and better and demand was growing for it. After much success placing Tres Fuegos beers in local beer spots, Chef Garcia and his partner decided to build their own place and combine the acquired beer knowledge and Chef Garcia’s extensive kitchen background. One detail that captured my attention is the Corporate Culture that is practiced here, a practice not commonly seen in the area, employees are encouraged and motivated to treat the place as if it is theirs, much weight is put on humanizing the whole experience from client to employees, it is stressed that they are servers BUT NOT servants, that treatment will not be tolerated here. I have to say that the menu diversity and originality was not expected, this place will not only capture your taste buds through beer, but it will keep you coming for the food too, from a traditional Mexican “Caldo de Res” (mexican Beef Stew), New York steaks, Tamales, Lamb, Vegan options and a MUST: Pork Rind or “Chicharron” that is literally crackling as you eat it, fresh out the frier! SNAP, CRACKLE, POP!! (Hope I don’t get sued)...

Music is just right to keep a conversation going, from progressive to triphop, rock and black metal (warm up your neck for some headbanging). They cater to art and awareness, drink and draw days, recently they had an Art expo, absolutely free for the artists to showcase and sell their work, no fee or commissions, I love this. Artists can approach them to coordinate and set up shop for a day. For the month of October they will be producing and selling a special Pink brew for Cancer Awareness Month and donating every drop of Pink beer that sells to a Cancer Non-Profit organization, can these guys be any cooler? Brunch Sundays will be hosting alternate kitchens each Sunday to keep it fresh. Oh yeah, the popcorn is always warm and free. “Achacosos Senderismo” was born more than 5 years, immediately after a trek that we realized, Luis, German and Fernando Jáuregui, from Tijuana to Tecate on the train tracks, while we walked we were taking photos and Germán would post them on Facebook and friends began to greet and congratulate us for the trek and were asking to be invited for the next one, and this way we began to invite Tijuana’s community to trek with us, we have managed to put together over 700 trekkers from Baja California and Baja California Sur (south), and thus, we have more than 70 treks organized by this group with destinations in Tecate, Rosarito, Tijuana and Ensenada.

How can trekkers feel safe on these journeys? Some details for added support and safety to our Trekkers: All our routes thoroughly examined prior to any organized treks by us, in all our treks our support team counts with communication radios, we have an emergency medical technician at all times on our team, personnel on foot, on vehicles and when necessary on bicycles and four wheel motorcycles. Within each route, every certain kilometres we install supply banks with benches and some with shade to have fruits and hydrating drinks like alkaline water and Gatorade, where needed, we install bathrooms or look for them on the routes. We offer our services to companies, unions, groups and/or associations the service of organizing a trek for them.

WE PROMOTE TREKKING AS A NOT COMPETITIVE SPORT ACTIVITY. ACHACOSOS SENDERISMO
