And as a significant birthday, preparing the best of the festivities, creating an agenda of top-level activities in the visual arts, performing arts, concerts, literature, films, festivals and tributes, starting from September to December these are just a few of the elements that are bringing this birthday party to life, not to mention that most activities and events will be free entry!. Yep, free, like a birthday party. So, to give honor to this section’s title, I have put together a guide to the main and most attractive activities coming up.

TIJUANA is a journey

JOURNEY INTO CECUT CHRIS SÁNCHEZ

T

his special CECUT edition by Tijuana Visitor wants to invite you to treat yourself to some Tijuana based Worldwide Culture, one that perhaps you never heard or thought to find in our city, since the news isn't normally good news, Tijuana Visitor is here to take care of that.

I couldn’t write based on my past journeys into CECUT, these were many eons ago, not really haha, more like 15 years ago at least, when school trips to CECUT were part of elementary and junior high, so I decided to dedicate a whole day to the center and see what the fuzz is all about. At its 35 year mark, CECUT shows much improvement and catch up with high-quality cultural centers around the world, and positioning itself as one of the most important in all of Mexico; I heard this and had to see it for myself. I arrived at CECUT and went straight to the ticket box, ok I lied a little, I went to my medical pedicure appointment before, I knew I was going to be walking around, had to show some love to my walkers, anyway, I bought a ticket for the IMAX Dome theater to see “Extreme Weather”, all the exhibitions and the Aquarium.

THE DOMO IMAX

"CECUT shows much improvement and catch up with high-quality cultural centers around the world, positioning itself as one of the most important in all of Mexico....." You walk in and the first thing you notice is the old IMAX projector, a cool round apparatus that reminds you of Saturn and if you get up close it reminds you of New York, you can see why in my pictures, I was expecting some kind of a fiction film about potential storms and disasters, absolutely NOT what I got, the film is extremely educational and real, very real situations mainly of scientists studying the effects, power and behavior that climate change is causing. I forgot to mention the live “Don Quijote” kids show going before you walk into the IMAX dome, really wanted to stay but the show was about to begin, the announcer shouting the beginning of the show in the esplanade dressed in 18th-century clothing caught my attention immediately.

After you walk out, you have the chance to peek inside the OMNIMAX Motion Picture System room through a large glass wall, pretty cool stuff.

TIJUANA is a journey

THE EXHIBITIONS

THE AQUARIUM

After the dome, I headed over the “Sergio Hernández” latest exhibition called “Última Thule". His 10 oil canvas, 17 lead paintings and 7 sculptures are true art pieces that can take you to many dark and beautiful places all at once. In this exhibition, Sergio painted his largest painting ever, an 8x8 Meter impressive painting on linen that he donated to the center, a gracious and very generous donation to the city. Thank you Sergio!. I made my move to the Massimo Listri (one of the masters of Architecture photography) photography exhibition, of the “Vatican Secrets”, a photography collection of a very special permission obtained by very few from the Vatican to photograph areas not accessible to the public, the beauty and vanity of the Vatican are beautifully exposed in this collection.

The next on my list, I honestly was expecting a short and expeditious walk through. CECUT has more in line than what you think, crabs, flesh-eating fish, sharks, turtles, stingrays and much much more than you can expect to find in the middle of Tijuana when it comes to sea life, you will spend more time than what you think in there, and as it finishes, it casually walks you into their botanical garden for some green education and some fresh clean air sponsored by… well… the plants! !

"el cubo : an exhibition area that undoubtedly gives the city and its visitors the opportunity to appreciate masterpieces of universal art, as well as various cultural manifestations.."

Takes you through time, and through chairs dating back to the 18th century until today with 100 chairs to sit you through it. You can appreciate the change in design and materials and the tendencies of return of these, in design and materials. Don't leave without watching the artist’s video, he explains the deeper significance of this exhibition, and the effects that chairs cause on society, you know, they make you sit down and chat, and from chat, much has happened through many centuries, chairs being, well, not in the middle literally, more like under it all.

THE CHAIR EXHIBITION

MUSEUM OF THE CALIFORNIA'S Is a great way to get related to your land before your time, this used to be the most visited back when I was a kid in school, with a different sense and point of view, I took the time to read and appreciate each piece, did you know indigenous Californians had their own shamans? That California was written about in Europe before it was discovered? That some of the indigenous tribes were polygamists? You can learn California’s history all the way to its colonization, Chinese immigration, the integration of their culture in the region and more.

THE END OF THE JOURNEY

Like all journeys, mine had come to an end, not the final end though, I have more to cover, but it seems that 1 day is not enough, and more so if CECUT keeps being a rockstar and changing its activities often as they do know, they give you more reasons to come back and keep the journey going. Thank you CECUT and staff, I must mention that every single staff member is approachable (they will probably approach you first) and very knowledgeable in all areas and activities at the Center.

TOURISM IN TIJUANA

CHRIS SÁNCHEZ

T

ijuana has many secrets and trick under its sleeve, but this is no trick and its secret is rapidly unveiling and being snatched from doctors all over the country and even some foreign investments. This time I sat down with Niral Basave, a well-rounded real estate woman with a background in art, that received me in her office, we sat down in her conference room, opened up a bottle of water and pretty much said to her, I know nothing, please talk to me like you want to sell to me, and I was sold...

8

New City Medical Plaza is what I am talking about, a project that aims high and outside of its locality, aiming internationally and taking on the challenge of revitalizing the medical tourism in Tijuana, but taking it 3 levels higher, to attract more of the already 1.2 Million medical tourists that drop over 500 Millions dollars a year in Tijuana and provide them with a first world experience, not only for patients, but their families as well. The growth projection of this tourism is 400% (THIS YEAR), and New City Medical Plaza is preparing to get their fair share of this growth. The project will offer more than 200 medical offices, laboratories, specialty pharmacies, radiology services, a business class hotel with 140+ rooms, 1000+ car parking lot, a plaza offering the finest wine and food from the region, yep, it's ambitious, and they are already building it.

REVITALIZING THE MEDICAL

TIJUANA is hEALTHY PHOTO BY: NEWCITY MEDICAL PLAZA RENDER

This High-Tech Medical project is already in the lead with a nomination for the “London Global Awards” for the best Medical Project in the World due to its aim to be the first of its class by offering a complete One Stop Shop for your medical and vacation needs, yes, vacations, that thing you should be doing often! You will be able to get your medical needs covered while your family can relax in the hotel and food plaza with 1st world products and services. One of the most interesting points (for me), is the way the operating rooms in the medical building will function, doctors will be able to purchase time the same way you purchase and handle a timeshare, yes a timeshare, yes in a medical setting, yes I said timeshare… I used to sell timeshare so my ear jumped a bit more when this word was brought up, and the fact that it’s difficult to imagine at first, but when you think about how doctors rent operating rooms for their surgeries, it begins to make sense.

PHOTO BY: NEWCITY MEDICAL PLAZA RENDER

THE PROJECT ITSELF IS AT 35% OF ITS COMPLETION AND 60% SOLD, IT IS EXPECTED TO BE FINISHED BY DEC. 2018 AND FULLY OPERATIONAL BY JUNE /JULY 2019.

Doctors will be able to use, sell and rent their operating room timeshare hours as they please, it’s theirs!. Doctors will also be able to package up deals, like, get your surgery done and 3 nights at the hotel for a special price. One of the main marketing and value medical services in Mexico can offer is cost VS US costs, for example, the average Gastric Bypass surgery in the states is around 23K, and the average cost for the same surgery in Mexico is 3K, just a 20K difference… one that over 1.2 Million patients base their decision on and become medical tourism for Tijuana. The timeshare style operating rooms structure will allow younger up and coming doctors to be able to book state of the art operating rooms at lower costs. The project is 500 meters from San Diego, a block or 2 away, you won't have to walk (unless you choose to) as shuttle services will be ongoing 24/7. Not only Tijuana is recognized worldwide by its gastronomy, it is gaining leverage in the medical field and is already being nominated for awards in the medical projects field at a worldwide level.Thank you New City Medical Plaza for putting Tijuana on the World Map once again!.

35TH CECUT 35 ANNIVERSARY.

One of the main things that makes CECUT stand out and surprisingly one of the things that many people don't know about is the fact that

the center offers high-level activities, presentations, and events at a very, very accessible price, with even additional incentives and discounts....

GOES CORAL T

ijuana’s own Cultural Center, better known as CECUT goes coral this year by celebrating it’s 35 year anniversary, for those that are asking: why Coral? Traditionally a 35 year wedding anniversary is celebrated with the gift of Coral, due to its organic nature formed in warm seas and the long time it takes to form itself that can be polished to show vibrant colors. Our cultural center has been catching the attention of the whole country lately, especially in the latest Federal Government Report where it was mentioned twice due to its latest performance in the cultural development sector nationwide, placing the center at the same level as “Palacio de Bellas Artes” (Palace of Fine Arts).

ANNIVER

The current director Pedro Ochoa has positioned CECUT in the cultural eye of the country, his first administration at CECUT was from 1988 to 1994, moving to a cultural aggregate of Mexico in San Diego for 12 years after that. Mr. Ochoa was reassigned to the administration of the cultural center again in 2013, making a noticeable and positively impacting comeback.

CECUT is that it is not a place you visit once and that is enough

CULTURAL TIJUANA visitor

A Mexican tradition that had been away for 15 years is the one of the famous “Voladores de Papantla” or “ Dance of the Flyers” where a specific trained indigenous group climbs a 30 meter pole and perform a dance while flying around the pole held by a string of rope, an ancient Mesoamerican ceremony named and “intangible cultural heritage” by UNESCO, believed to have a history of 450 years and began as a calling to the gods for rain during droughts.

H

One of the main things that makes CECUT stand out and surprisingly one of the things that many people don't know about is the fact that the center offers high-level activities, presentations, and events at a very, very accessible price, with even additional incentives and discounts to seniors (50% off), and up to 85% off to local policeman, military personnel and firefighters, them and their families. In fact, when highly renowned expositions tickets go out for sale, the first online sales to be registered come from the United States, in occasions, there are expositions that also travel to San Diego or LA, but the price difference is so significant that many people travel to Tijuana to see them at CECUT, this is a fact.

Voladores de Papantla or Dance of the Flyers

The last time this ritual was brought to CECUT, the flyers were invited to San Francisco to perform and then to China, some of these flyers are still there! So a new group has been called upon to perform, you can check them out in October.

Construction of esplanade and IMAX

Photo: JULIAN QUI

All these things were brought to my attention at a dinner in Cubo Bistro, CECUT’s own bistro restaurant, with Communications Director Jeanette Sanchez and Press Assistant Daniel Martinez over some “escargot tacos”, “foie gras” and a couple gin tonics, not gonna lie. This chat sparked a curiosity in CECUT that I had not felt in years, so I decided to spend a full day at CECUT, and that’s exactly what I did, check out the journey piece on my experience, I can guarantee you that I was caught by all the activities and expositions as well as the level of quality of the artists presenting, it is a must see, from the awesome IMAX to the Aquarium and everything in between will keep you interested, learning and wanting more of the experience.

There are festivals celebrated on their esplanade where thousands attend to learn and enjoy time to educate themselves and spend the day with the family in an educational environment that removes the “cliche” of it being boring....

Pedro Ramírez Vázquez + Manuel Rosen Morrison

My takeaway from CECUT is that it is not a place you visit once and thats enough, it is one you want to follow on your social media accounts, subscribe to get email updates on “what's going on and when”, and attend, attend, attend, there are festivals celebrated on their esplanade where thousands attend to learn and enjoy time to educate themselves and spend the day with the family in an educational environment that removes the “cliche” of it being boring, with activities like the Aquarium, 360 Virtual Reality tours of every state in Mexico, IMAX theater with some awesome short documentaries, theater, art exhibitions and more, much more, it's is why CECUT is Vital and a Central part not only of Tijuana, but Mexico as a country, we are proud to say that Tijuana is CECUT and CECUT is Tijuana.

RSARY.

his project was one of the first of its kind in Tijuana, offering a space to the rapidly growing food truck market, but not just "a space", more of a home and at the same time a hub for the fresh chefs of the streets of TJ, it took sometime for me to visit so I was a little spoiled when I first went as the options were very diverse, from homemade sausages, to catch of the day fish, to ramen, to fresh seafood tostadas and a cold Stella, yes, I love craft beer, but I like me a Stella every now and then. This place caught the love of Tijuana Foodies very quickly and filled all the spots available creating demand for more at the same time, and the lobster molting effect came into action (This is the process in which lobsters struggle out of their old shells while simultaneously absorbing water which expands their body size, FYI), Gastropark had to find a new home, and they were able to, pretty much right around the corner.

Photo: chris sánchez

The new spot offers, more light, more vendors, more room for sitting down, more murals, more ambiance, and craft beer brewing, yep, it's the thing... you know... and more, much much more awesome food. I am visiting each spot one by one, I leave a few days in between to cleanse my palate and stomach for a fresh start. I headed over to visit at around 11 am on a Thursday (Thirsty Thursday), I forgot to have breakfast and honestly went straight to the beer, had some tasters and went for the Imperial Stout.

TELEFÓNICA GASTROPARK IS THE PERFECT PLACE TO ENJOY WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS!

Photo: chris sánchez

TIJUANA is Gastronomy I was scoping out the place, open area with seating and umbrellas, second story outdoor balcony type setting with additional tables and a view, second floor indoor seating areas as well as on the first right next to the brewing area and bar and my favorite spot above a bar height table, a type of resting area made out of a net with beer glass holders on the sides… Oh yeah, felt like a type of “Curious George” analyzing my beer glass as it emptied.

TELEFÓNICA GASTROPARK HAS MUCH TO OFFER FOR YOU TO SIT BACK, EAT, DRINK AND HANG OUT WITH FRIENDS.

Before the beer kicked in I decided to order me a few eats, walked over to POKE MADRE and order a Spicy Tuna Bowl, delicious, fresh and enough to POKE my heart, good fresh fish options for those Japanese Bowl lovers…Walked next door from them and order me a Bacon from HUMO, homemade bacon sausage on a bun with a corncob with a butter based dressing (can’t go wrong with butter), the red pepper salsa in oil they have is a must!

I spent around 4 to 5 hours lounging, eating, drinking… I am not one to hang out too long in many places, like Kurt Cobain sings in All Apologies, “I was I was like you, easily amused”, in this case, I was amused, not easily, because Telefonica Gastropark has much to offer for you to sit back, eat, drink and hang out with friends, I had about 5 or 6 friends say Hi and hang out during that time, and time flew… So if you are visiting the area with friends and it’s time to eat and you want to score on the food to have everyone happy with their options, Telefónica Gastropark is the perfect place, no question!

in the heart of tijuana and on one of the busiest boulevards liríca is positioning itself in the middle of telefonica gastropark

the beer Liríca is a fairly new brewery founded by the same people at Telefónica Gastropark, a food truck park that grew so much it had to move to a bigger place to accommodate the high demand from consumers and vendors wanting to be a part of the park. This move proved to be a good one, and a strategic one for the growth and exposure of Liríca in the next coming months once they release. In the heart of Tijuana and on one of the busiest boulevards Liríca is positioning itself in the middle of Food Truck heaven (Telefonica Gastropark), they plan to offer a variety of on-tap beers to join the rapidly growing and large variety of local Tijuana brews. The opportunity to release this new brand of beer in an already established and recognized food hut is a great opportunity for the owners of Gastropark but also a challenge and risk, basically, can't mess this one up! We are anxiously awaiting the release of this beer with everyone else that already enjoys the awesome Gastropark space and feel.

the tequila I this edition Beer is Complemented with Tequila, you know you have been there, after a few beers, Tequila comes knocking on the door, you don't want to let him in, but he’s always got back up and peer pressure from friends, Tequila is one of those guys that won't take a no and won't leave after you let him in…I have discovered over the years with my family elders that ONLY drink Tequila, that if you ONLY drink Tequila the whole night, you may avoid a hangover, YES! it does happen!. This October 12th through the 15th Tijuana brings you Tequila from all over Mexico, straight to your nearest Revolution Avenue and 8th street, street will be closed off, Tequila bottles will be opened, Mariachis will be warmed up, so get your throats ready and tongues in line to taste as many Tequilas as you want and save yourself a trip to Jalisco by just crossing the border. This is the 14th edition of Expo Tequila in Tijuana, a constant and fun event to bring friends and family from everywhere, 30% of the attendance are foreigners, every year, oh and yes, there will be food, lots of it to sober down as many times as you need!

I am big urban art enthusiast, fan, pusher, organizer if you will. I have a project called Baja Internacional (www. bajainternacional.com) that is entirely dedicated to helping impulse Tijuana’s urban art by helping companies and organizations fuse with artists, acting as a type of bridge where the 2 parts learn and understand each other's needs and come into harmony to achieve each other's goals during a project. With recent collaborations our work has been noticed and talked about since our last project where we brought together 30 artists from Tijuana, USA, and Guatemala, using the border wall as our canvas, and organizing a 2 day event where artists came together for 1 cause, demonstrating the coexistence and binational unity between our countries (Mexico and the US), twell, all of this made enough noise to be invited to a meeting with Xolos Soccer Club, and this is what is happening.

PUTTING ART ON THE FIELD

Photos: chris sánchez

CHRIS SANCHEZ Met with peeps from Studio664 (wrote about them in a previous edition) and we headed off to Xolos Stadium with a couple of artists and met with the Marketing team, they explained their idea of the Soccer Club not only being focused on soccer but also wanting to be part and impulse the local community, and in this case the urban art scene as they (as everyone else in the area) have noticed the recent buzz around Tijuana’s Urban Art community. What they had in mind? Milk… Yes, milk, lots of it! haha... There is a rumor that the plastic milk gallon was invented in Tijuana! Can you believe that, Caesar's salad first and now this!.. but nah, I made my research and found that it was actually invented on April 23rd in 1963 by Walter R. Bard, an artist and designer came up with the design for a plastic milk jug, anyway, there is a new Xolo sponsor in town that's in the business and they decided to pitch in, with some BIG A** Milk Jugs…

THE MILK JUGS

A selection and invitation of artists was made to paint a total of 4 giant gallons and a 5th one was left to an open invitation to the communities of Tijuana and San Diego through social media, radio, TV and some guerilla marketing by yours truly to source 3 emerging artist that would like to participate and invite them to send proposals. They did and they were selected, and the event was a success. It is an open invitation for people came to watch the artists do their magic and give life to these giant jugs, This event was programmed to take place on September 21st, but due to the tragic earthquake in Mexico, Xolos Soccer Club suspended all activities (including their games) to focus on food, clothes, tools, money collections to help relief the people affected by this natural disaster. The event will take place in October or November, date is TBD, but no worries, we will keep you in the loop, guaranteed. There is word that these jugs will be auctioned off in December at the Stadium, stay tuned, we will surely share any information on this, you can have your own Big Xolo Jug!. We want to congratulate Club Xoloitzcuintles for their constant community involvement and the desire to contribute to the urban art scene and push our regional artists to success!
