NERO 48 IS AT IT AGAIN! 4TH EDITION

EDITIONS

This during the first year, it was there where we decided not to do more pavilion events and risk everything for a complete experience of what had been the original idea of NERO48, we understood that what our audiences look for are enriching experiences beyond a sell-purchase activity only.

First Edition: Brik10 - December 2015 Second Edition: One Bunk Hotel - December 2016 Third Edition: Eazy Workspace - July 2017 Four Edition Pasaje Mexico - December 2017

"THE PUBLIC ACQUIRES HIGH-QUALITY PRODUCTS AT A GOOD PRICE, LIVE A UNIQUE EXPERIENCE DURING THE EVENT AND CAN BE IN A FAMILY ATMOSPHERE IF DESIRED"

What is the trajectory of NERO Pop Up Store event? NERO48 Pop Up Store was born in Tijuana, Mx. 2 years ago, on November 2015 and by December of the same year we were already launching our first edition in the BRIK10 building, we had during the weekend (48 hours), 400 attendees and 26 participants; from there they looked for us to set up a pavilion in the first Guadalupe Valley Fest at Finca Altozano in El Valle de Guadalupe, and the pavilion was a great success; then we were invited to the Latin American Art Festival to re-mount NERO48 in Pavilion format, the response was impressive.

recently wrote about my experience at NERO 48, a pop-up store event I came across last minute, invited by a participating friend. The event was a blast, products made and sold by Mexican artists and designers from Mexico residing in other Countries and top trending cities like New York and San Francisco, and of course Mexico city now CDMX. Ilya Haro is my inside contact and I was able to get a short informative interview with her, check it out!

"SHARE MEXICAN TALENT WITH A CONSUMER SEEKING EXCLUSIVE PRODUCTS AND IS WILLING TO EXPERIMENT WITH UNIQUE FORMATS ON THEIR WAY OF CONSUMING."

#POPUPSTORE

What are specific benefits of attending and/or participating in this event? In the event it is a requirement that the designer or producer be present, never a mediator or a representative, so what we are looking for is for the public to understand and be interested in what the product is per se, directly from its creator. As well for the creator or entrepreneur to identify the needs or peculiarities that his/her public may have. We believe that it is a unique and enrichving experience, we seek to articulate each of the activities that take place in the event, as well as to finely cure our collaborations in order to have a real impact and grow in content and quality, not just in quantity. What type of people are benefited by these services and products? Creative entrepreneurs, Culinary projects, The schools, Our communities, Our city, Public of all ages.

What is on the horizon for NERO48? Growth in quality and content, be self-sustainable and reach more audiences that have not had the opportunity to see the quality of the product of what many of our entrepreneurs offer.

All the things that thrill us in what is our professional task: connect agents and disciplines through a creative and multisensory experience, empower the creative as an entrepreneur offering them the tools to grow and share Mexican talent with a consumer seeking exclusive products and is willing to experiment with unique formats on their way of consuming. At almost 2 years of life, NERO48 has the NERO48 Scholarship thanks to the collaboration with the business school of the Pacific in the masters of creative and cultural industries; we collaborate with important and renowned strategic partners; the economic benefit for each event is interesting and contributes to the Mexican creative companies as well as offers a space for recreation in our communities. A message to the public, from you? We need to raise awareness, create a community and have time to think and be creative, NERO48 is an excellent option to do it without leaving aside our moments as consumers, NERO48 is setting the pace. We wait for you all #compramexicano.

We are currently a startup that promotes Mexican design and avant-garde culinary talent in Northern Mexico and California in the United States, the idea is to make activations through a multisensory experience, we have a date to hold the event during 2018 in Los Angeles California, in San Francisco California, and of course in Tijuana, Mx.

ost of the people that have heard or know of Tijuana that are not from the city, are familiar with Revolution avenue, an avenue that pumps blood to the Tijuana heart every night, like arteries split and spread, Revolution Avenue has alleys or “Pasajes” that like Tijuana, also suffered during the recession(s) that our dear governments love to celebrate every once in a decade. In many parts of Mexico, these alleys are important commerce vehicles and spaces to enjoy some recreational time, back in the days these alleys in Tijuana were well known for the local Mexican crafts and gifts ranging from leather sandals, jackets, knives, onix stone figures and tons of hoarder loving thingamajigs. These products were referred to as ‘Mexican Curios” (curios short for curiosidades: curiosities), and that was the name of the business; curios.

WITH THE NEW MILLENNIUM RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER, THESE “PASAJES” BEGAN DECAYING HAND IN HAND WITH THE TOURISM AT THAT TIME AS WELL AS THE DEMAND FOR CURIOS.

With the recent Tijuana Arts & Culture boom, these alleys have been getting healthier and healthier, around 7 years ago a groups of artists and Tijuana enthusiasts dedicated to revive dead spaces in Tijuana pinned Pasaje Revolución as their next project and began the revival of it, calling on key players in the Tijuana Arts & Culture ambiance they formed a committee and scripted the future of this alley focusing on the committee's expertise. Pasaje Revolución celebrated its Grand Opening back on July 15th of 2012 and has come a long way since, offering spaces for art, culture, restaurants, coffee shops, design, a variety of events and activities with art, dance, music, even Farmers Market style events. Of course, I had to visit, so I stopped by to see what the haps was. I parked off Revolution and walked my way down through the closed old location of "Café La Especial" an old coffee shop famous for its steamed tacos that hosted many visitors and locals in the glory days of Tijuana, but not to worry, as you approach the stairway they have a small corner spot where they serve their traditional menu, at the bottom is where the closed location is, but I can sniff something going on in there, I peaked through a hole in the wall and saw some construction stuff going on so I think we are in for a surprise very soon. What I found at Pasaje Revolución, a brewery with a tasting room, vape shop, music school, urban food stops, local product shops, coffee shops and roasteries, art galleries, photo shoots going on, a scent of beer brewing that mellows your nostrils, random video projections, lots and lots of color on the floors, walls, art hanging off wires and in the ceiling, urban art murals, grandfather tree, mural materials store, Rotary International Club, piano in the alley, catrinas, and a sign that reminded me of Apu Nahasapeemapetilon, thank you, come again! And a Dali mural with a reminder: “Time is one of the few important things that we have left”, so don’t waste your time and make a trip to Tijuana and it’s “Pasajes” don’t let them pass you by.

W H AT I S I T ? Cupping therapy is an ancient form of alternative medicine in which a therapist puts special cups on your skin for a few minutes to create suction. People get it for many purposes, including to help with pain, inflammation, blood flow, relaxation and well-being, and as a type of deep-tissue massage.

A

s I have written in past editions, I am a fan of holistic medicines as well as traditional ones, I have been applying the cupping therapy to my body for years, earlier than Michael Phelps! (this I know I can beat him for sure, other than age). I have had some back issues and tried many things from giant magnets to crazy hole in the wall massage spots in the middle of Mexico, but none have proven more effect than cupping, and I confirmed this last year after a motorcycle accident in April, I got clipped and flew about 25 feet in the air, skipped like a stone when thrown over water and crashed and stopped with my head against a concrete trash receptacle on a boulevard… Yeah, it was pretty crazy, I thought I had some serious injuries, but after 6 hours of cat scanning I was free to go and after 24 hours I was on a plane to Guadalajara for a bachelor party (yes, I am a team player). I pretty much went out one night and was pretty high on medicated drugs to do so, I could barely walk, my whole body was contractured the whole time and when I came back, I was walking with a limp (and not the “cool” Snoop Dog” limp walk), I called Carlos immediately to make an appointment and he took me in quick after I explained my situation. I got there with a limp, I left like a pim, (lol). Cupping was the best thing I could have done after my accident, it had the most benefits to my body, more than the hospital therapies and prescriptions meds (and I got to a large hospital group in the States, starts with an “S”) that I got, and they looked pretty sharp…

HISTORY NOTE

Cupping may be trendy now, but it is an ancient alternative medicine, going back all the way to the Egyptians, it is mentioned in the Eber Papyrus, one of the oldest medical textbooks written in 1550 BC, so there is reason to believe this is a practice with at least 3,000 years of history.

THE CUPPING THERAPY RELIEVES MUSCLE TENSION, IT HELPS AS

TIJUANA is hEALTHY

A DETOX AND CAN TREAT VARIOUS AILMENTS SUCH AS COLITIS,

GASTRITIS, SCIATICA, SPRAINS AMONG OTHERS.... I finally convinced Carlos to agree to a quick interview to get to know more of his history, technique, and benefits. What are your name and story? My name is Carlos Hecht, born in Tijuana Mexico and educated on both sides of the border, business administration as a second career and chiropractic\physiotherapist as my primary passion, I studied at the Institute of Dr. Karel Lewit (chiropractic) and physiotherapy at the Institute of Advanced Trainings in Long Beach and Sujok Acupuncture (Korean) at the Holistic School of San Diego.

How was the passion for this career born? It was born as a result of my own injuries, in the sport of baseball, running, basketball, I saw the way of how to heal effectively and quickly, I began to ask and educating myself about it with the few books that existed at that time, what motivated me the most was the results, the prolongation of the relief and the inspiration of having better health.

What is the purpose of what you do? The main purpose is to help people get out of their specific pain problem and it gives me great satisfaction to see people happy, I hope to be doing this where I can, and that my friends and new people I meet have the option that I can help them with their back and muscle problems. What kind of people can benefit from what you do? Anyone who suffers from sports injuries, knee, shoulder, ankle, etc., sciatic nerve problems, scoliosis lordosis and spinal column, muscular nervous tension, or simply maintenance of your spine. What specific benefits do these therapies provide directly to people? Well, for example, the cupping therapy relieves muscle tension, it helps as a detox and can treat various ailments such as colitis, gastritis, sciatica, sprains among others, the chiropractic part benefits the proper functioning of our organs since all our vertebrates are connected nerves to them, corrects body position and the patient takes additional information apart from the session, so that your whole family is benefited, and I treat every single patient as if it were my own family !

I N F O R M AT I O N N OT E

During your therapy, alcohol is put in the cup and it is set on fire. As the fire goes out, the cup is placed on your skin and as the cup cools down it acts as a vacuum. This causes your skin to rise, turn red and your blood vessels will expand.

CO N TAC T I N F O R M AT I O N

How long have you been in the business? Since 1998 doing physical therapy and licensed since 2003.

HIKI JAI was established in 1944. If you observe the walls of the restaurant the owner history is displayed of each of their terms: 1944 Cándido Arriola, from 1945 to 1946, the Salazar family and Mrs. Vici, from 1947 to 1996, Mr. Pedro Gárate, from 1997 to 2008, the Monje family, currently it is owned by Miguel Monje, Angel Jimenez and Hector Saucedo. In the golden age of the Basque ball (Jai Alai), 28 Spanish players participated, after the games, they were invited to the restaurant with open bar, menu and everything they wanted. This was because Mr. Pedro Garate was a player himself and would treat the team to his place right across the street. With sadness, the Jai Alai closed its doors in the nineties, due to the decline of the sport of “pelotaris” and the increase of satellite betting in different sports. In Chiki Jai they specialize in Spanish cuisine for over seven decades winners of multiple awards ,our dishes include Lamb, Cod a la Vizcaine sauce, Ribeye, they are famous for our multiple tapas and are winners of multiple awards for the specialty PAELLA VALENCIANA.

I must say it is an honor to sit and enjoy at the tables of the CHIKI JAI that have hosted famous people like, Ava Gardner, Rita Hayworth, Errol Flynn, and even Ernest Hemingway, yes...Hemingway. I sat down and asked the waiter right away for their Paella, the most traditional plate on the menu, and to start me off with some Garlic Sauteed Mushrooms recommended by Hector the waiter… A basket of bread arrived at my table with 1 red and 1 green sauce and a beautiful triangular slice of traditional cheese, I had to stop myself from eating so much bread with cheese and salsa before my food came, it was addictive. I was not too excited about ordering the mushrooms but had to go with a connoisseur recommendation. And by god was I happy I did so, those were some damn good mushrooms, again, had to stop before my paella, these are well-served tapas, should have gone with company but it was an unexpected visit, I was nearby and had to take the opportunity.

P A E L L A The paella arrived as soon as I stopped eating my mushrooms, I realized Hector and Angel (waiters) had me on check as well as the other customers there, their service is superb! And that Paella, well, when you visit, order the Paella, it is a must!

The ambiance meets its name, there are classic posters of Jai Alai tournaments, and irons from different families from Mexico and Spain that must have played or have some type of involvement in the sport. At the end of my meal I asked the waiter more on the owners and if there ever visited the restaurant, Hector smiled and said, I am always here...If you didn’t catch it, like me, Hector and Angel work at the restaurant after being employees they joined the owner team and run the daily operations, both with experience working in Basque ambiances, they are the perfect fit.So when you visit, please say hi to the owners for me when they approach your table and greet you.

BEER, AZTEC AS IT GETS

Azteca is a family, which is dedicated to the development of quality Mexican beer.

CHRIS SÁNCHEZ

A

zteca Craft Brewing has its beginnings in Tijuana BC. Mexico, with a simple idea, "create a perfectly balanced beer of flavor and quality". Mission: We are a family that believes in the conservation of quality, dedication, and passion in every beer we produce. Azteca is a brand that stands out for its dedication to making each beer an experience. Vision: To have a presence in the market as a high-quality Mexican product, distinguished by its innovation and creation of a sense of belonging for Mexican palates. All of the above was taken pretty much from their website, but, I had to visit, I mean, it’s beer, can’t talk about it without tasting it first, sheesh!

Open from Monday to Saturday from: 12pm - 12am Pasaje revolucion: Av Revolución 942, Zona Centro (downtown)

Photo: azteca craft brewering facebook

I showed up earlier than they were expecting me and caught Karla paying their delivered Poke Bowls that looked more than perfect, I had just eaten so my cravings were not going crazy for them, but I will have to try them… I asked if we could meet early if possible, and I took a stroll around Paseo Revolución while Ximena and Karla ate lunch. Ximena and Karla are the only women I personally know that are 100% in the beer business, both production that is run by Karla and the administration of the brand by Ximena, sisters both clearly in their twenties. How did they get in the business? Mr. Joel Lopez Corona (Dad), a mechanical engineer graduated in Germany has been in the coffee machine business in Mexico for years and came across an investor with an opportunity of setting up a brewery about 25 years ago, when beer was pretty much monopolized, they needed someone that was was a mechanical engineer and spoke German, so it was pretty much a done deal..

B R E

He set up a few breweries with different craft beer brands since and became an expert on beer brewing along the way, giving Ximena and Karla a fresh and natural path into the beer business.

C R A F T TIJUANA is Beer

Ximena even mentioned remembering Stone brewers carrying around coolers with beers at the early beer fests when she wasn't even legally allowed to drink. The family began working on their project 7 years ago testing brews and perfecting their formulas, and let me tell you that they did a great job, they joined Pasaje Revolucion during its rehab project 5 years ago as it was a perfect fit since the Paseo was aiming for a cultural setting.

After 3 years at Paseo and many people that would walk into the alley following the smell of beer being brewed, coming up to them and asking, what's cooking? Well, they would get a taste of what they were brewing, literally… So they decided to test out the tasting room business and filling up the plaza area where they are located now. I asked to walk to the tasting room and tried 3 of their beers, Cream Ale (yes, it is creamy, in a good way), an IPA that you can taste the hop but it was not invasive at 7%, and Piltic a blonde ale that is perfect for hiking (lol). They are culturally oriented and supportive, hosting one event each week, from supporting the LGBT community, to University students, arts & culture.

BEER SISTERS ARE AWESOME HOSTS

Photo: azteca craft brewering facebook

Azteca Craft is a brewery that believes in the quality, work, and passion with which we make every liter of beer

Photo: chris sÁnchez

The beer is 100% family owned and operated, Mr. Joel Lopez as the head of the business, Ximena Lopez as the administrator, Karla Lopez as the brew queen and Joel Lopez Jr, running the tasting room. I had a great time and enjoyed the company of the “beer sisters” (I named them that now, I hope they don’t hate me for that), it is absolutely a craft beer business that is 100% local and growing, so far their beers are the most friendly beers I have come across in TJ, this is absolutely a must when you are around Revolution. I will be back to try the Coconut Porter, that is a must.

The splendor that attracted celebrities

1927 - 1947 - 2017 In this edition of Sports Insiders, we decided to #tbt (throw-back Tijuana) it, and the obvious came up, the old Jai Alai Palace.

JAI ALAI Palace & Game CHRIS S Á NCHEZ

A JAI ALAI is very similar to frontenis but inB a much larger court and instead of a racquet, O a hand-held device called a “cesta” that accelerates to high speeds is used. When I say U high speeds, I mean high speeds, the goatskin covered ball that typically weighs 125 to 140T

grams, it did, in fact, hold the world record once traveling at 188 miles per hour, performed by Jose Ramon Areitio at the Newport Rhode Island Jai Alai. It is a sport played in round robin format, typically eight teams would play, 2 players each or 8 singles. The winner must score 7 or 9 points in order to achieve victory.

Photo: www.neat-stuff-blog.blogspot.mx

THE BUILDING After 2 decades of construction, the building was inaugurated on May 28th of 1947, it was the place that “Fronton” tournaments would take place, or Basque ball, way before San Diego had any professional teams in American Football, hockey, baseball or soccer. This gave Jai Alai an allure to sports enthusiasts across the border over a spectacular and new sport. This historic building has a neo-classical architecture style and still is one of the most significant buildings in the city of Tijuana and its identity. There is word that one of the astronauts who first landed on the moon had visited once, as well as recognized celebrities like John Wayne.

Here, visitors, international personalities from all around the world and Hollywood types would enjoy the exciting game of “jai-alai”, the fastest ball game in the planet.

The court in Tijuana was actually opened in 1927, with 190 feet long and 55 wide.

In 1957, the building suffered a large fire that destroyed practically two thirds of the building, fortunately it did not affect the structure and facade, it had a hype after the reopening in 1968 after a strike of “pelotaris” (players of the sport) in Florida forced them to come to Tijuana to play. The game was on an up and down after that and slowly died after off-site (satellite) betting became popular. Since its closure in 2002 and reopening in 2003, the building now serves as “El Foro”, an event venue that hosts concerts in the city, it seats 3,000.
