Tijuana museums Tijuana is a place full of surprises for both foreign visitors and local tourism. The city always calls us to adventure and discovery. In this edition of Tijuana Visitor, we invite you to visit four downtown museums, they could be unknown even to local residents: The Wax Museum, the History Museum, the Collector's Museum and the Sports Hall of Fame. Each one owns a particularity that will make it fun for those who decide to take this walk, starting on First Street and ending at the south end of Revolución Ave. inside the replica of the historic Agua Caliente Tower. We continue with Cafetomanía, making our contribution as the only magazine in the region with a specialized column in coffee topics. We have a guest journalist, John Rippo who joins as a collaborator and from his sandiegan perspective makes suggestions on how to travel in Troley from San Diego to Tijuana. And of course, we include a good concert guide by Nairda Ariday, among other articles of interest.
Tijuana es un lugar lleno de sorpresas tanto para nuestros visitantes extranjeros como para el turismo local. La ciudad nos llama siempre a la aventura y al descubrimiento. En esta edición de Tijuana Visitor te invitamos a conocer cuatro museos que se encuentran ubicados en el centro de la ciudad y que podrían ser desconocidos incluso para los residentes locales: El Museo de Cera, el Museo de Historia, Museo del Coleccionista y el Salón de la Fama del Deporte. Cada uno tiene alguna particularidad que lo hace entretenido para quienes realicen este recorrido que inicia en la Calle Primera y termina en el tope de la Avenida Revolución, justo en la réplica de la histórica Torre de Agua Caliente. Seguimos con nuestra columna Cafetomanía, haciendo nuestro aporte como la única revista de la región que cuenta con una columna especializada en el tema del café. Tenemos a un periodista invitado, John Rippo quien se suma como colaborador y desde su perspectiva sandieguina y nos hace sugerencias de como trasladarse en Troley desde San Diego a Tijuana. Por supuesto, no falta una buena guía de conciertos a cargo de Nairda Ariday, entre otros artículos de interés.

Have a great trip
to Tijuana! By John Rippo
The simplest way to get from San Diego to Tijuana (if you don’t want to drive your own car) is to purchase a Compass Card for two dollars from the Old Town station, Main Transit Station on Park Boulevard or from any of the many other stations and outlets that retail them. A day's fare for unlimited rides on the trolley costs $5 per day and allows for bus rides in addition to trolley service. The ticket machines at every station take a minute or two to figure out; follow the prompts and above all, keep the ticket the machine issues you handy. MTS conductors are cops -and carry guns- losing a ticket means at the very least an annoying inconvenience blended with annoying, inconvenient intimidation. Not recommended. Remember to get the ticket from the machines at San Ysidro on the return trip, too. The MTS Blue Line Trolley runs to the end of the line at San Ysidro. From downtown, the trip normally takes anywhere from twenty to thirty-five minutes, depending on traffic conditions and time of day. Stations are announced through the journey and there are signs that correspond to the maps available at any station. Once at San Ysidro, one can follow the signs to the foot path to the border and cross into Tijuana. Trolleys run from 6 A.M. to at least 11:30 P.M., though sometimes the last trolley north leaves the San Ysidro station as late as half past midnight. Prudent riders should keep an eye on the time and make sure to make that 11:30 P.M. trolley northward. Despite what you've heard about needing a valid US passport or at least "the card" aka "passport light" to cross‌and return, the truth is that so long as you carry your state ID or driver's license, you can safely cross the border without incident. At least for now. Non-US citizens should disregard that last sentence and make sure their passports are in order. Everyone should be aware that walking back across the border from Tijuana will place you in line with everyone else for as long as it takes for the American authorities to process everyone your line. Be patient. Very patient. Use the bathroom before entering the line. Transportation from the border to anywhere in Tijuana is excellent; taxis and buses can take you anywhere you want to go and most drivers speak enough English to avoid confusion. San Diegans usually recommend to out-of-town friends to leave their car behind and walk about Tijuana or rely on their mass transit unless they have previously purchased Mexican auto insurance. Rental car agencies usually do not allow their vehicles into Mexico. Crossing into Mexico is like entering a new and wonderful world. The easiest way to go is with the San Diego MTS Blue Line. PASSION ON PAPER LEOPOLDO MENDEZ AND THE POPULAR GRAPHIC WORKSHOP UNTIL FEBRUARY 24 at cecut th
The 350 works exhibited in El Cubo Room 1 represent an era that has its reference in the famous Popular Graphic Workshop (known in Spanish as TGP) where a group of talented and politically committed artists used to meet in the post-revolutionary period to print their engravings. Most of their creations had implicit messages of the social struggles of the Mexican people. In this exhibition it is possible to appreciate the works of Leopoldo Méndez (TGP founder), one of the most important Mexican engravers, second only to the great José Guadalupe Posada, as well as the work of other artists who were also part of the artistic movement known as the Mexican School of Painting. Among them Jean Charlot, Pablo O'Higgins, Alfredo Zalce, Luis Arenal, Elizabeth Catlett, Fanny Rabel, Andrea Gómez, Arturo García Bustos, Everardo Ramírez and Adolfo Mexiac. This exhibition was created to celebrate 80 years of TGP, founded in 1937.

Las 350 obras que se exhiben en la Sala 1 de El Cubo, representan toda una época que tiene su referencia en el famoso Taller de Gráfica Popular (TGP) donde un grupo de artistas de talento y políticamente comprometidos, se reunían en tiempos posrevolucionarios para imprimir sus obras. La mayoría de sus creaciones tenían mensajes explícitos de las luchas sociales del pueblo mexicano. En esta exhibición, es posible apreciar obras de Leopoldo Méndez fundador del TGP, considerado como el grabador mexicano más importante después de José Guadalupe Posada, así como los trabajos de otros artistas que, en su mayoría, también formaban parte del movimiento artístico conocido como La Escuela Mexicana de Pintura. Entre ellos Jean Charlot, Pablo O’Higgins, Alfredo Zalce, Luis Arenal, Elizabeth Catlett, Fanny Rabel, Andrea Gómez, Arturo García Bustos, Everardo Ramírez y Adolfo Mexiac. Tere Riqué
Forjadora del año In Tijuana there are people whose work and commitment through the decades brings elements that create a sense of community and settle the bases to live in a better city. One of these people is the teacher Tere Riqué Jaime, who this year received the highest recognition from the “Madrugadores de Tijuana” group, distinguished as the “Forjadora del año”, 2018. Tere Riqué is a cultural promoter and director of the Opera de Tijuana Foundation responsible for the Street Opera Festival, an event that brings the Bell Canto to Colonia Libertad, one of the most popular and the oldest sections in Tijuana. We are grateful to the Opera de Tijuana Foundation for programs Photo: Jeniffer Sastre oriented to the creation of new public for the opera and also for professional formation since they teach music to children and young people who eventually join the formal opera productions of the Foundation. One of the goals of Opera de Tijuana is to start building a theater. In the ceremony for the prestigious award given by the president of “Madrugadores” Jesus Alberto Laborín, teacher Tere Riqué closed her speech with a phrase attributed to the musician Kurt Cobain: "Let the music sound louder than the troubles”.
En Tijuana hay gente cuyo trabajo y compromiso, a lo largo de las décadas, aporta elementos que crean comunidad y construyen cimientos para vivir en una mejor ciudad. Una de estas personas es la maestra Tere Riqué Jaime quien este año recibió el máximo reconocimiento por parte del Grupo Madrugadores de Tijuana, al ser distinguida como Forjadora del año 2018. Tere Riqué es promotora cultural y directora de la Fundación Opera de Tijuana, responsable del festival Opera en la Calle, un evento que lleva el Bell Canto a la colonia Libertad, una de las más populares y la másantigua de Tijuana. A la Fundación Opera de Tijuana se le agradecen programas de creación de públicos y también formativos ya que se enseña esta vertiente artística a niños y jóvenes quienes, eventualmente, se integran a las producciones formales de la Fundación. Una de las metas de Opera de Tijuana es empezar a construir un teatro para la Opera en esta ciudad. En la ceremonia de entrega del prestigiado premio que entregó el presidente de Madrugadores, Jesús Alberto Laborín, Tere Riqué cerró su discurso de agradecimiento con una frase atribuida al músico Kurt Cobain: “Qué la música suene más alto que los problemas”.

La Chulita Coffee House
Sometimes you need to take a break or have a good cup of coffee, and a great place for both is La Chulita Coffee Bar located downtown Tijuana. This cute place has a mexican modern style, when you enter you see a lot of plants, a nice little bar and a lovely decoration. This place makes its own syrup flavors, including seasonal ones, from Pumpkin Spice to Café de Olla flavor. They also use vegetable milk. So let’s focus on the drinks I recommend: The Cafe de Olla Latte and the American Coffee with Vanilla Syrup, both of them have a very rich flavor. And if you have doubt about something, Dulce knows a lot of stuff about coffee and what to recommend, so don’t be afraid to ask, she is very nice. You can bring your friends (and your pets) to this lovely place!

Varón Café
Last week I had the opportunity to visit Varón Café located on Colonia Cacho. I really liked this place because it’s a small, cozy coffee shop. They have variety in methods of coffee preparation and helpful, friendly baristas; it’s not a crowded place, if you want to chill and drink coffee come to this place, they really have a great atmosphere. Let’s talk about the drinks: I recommend the famous Orancello, it has the amazing rich body of a deep intense coffee mixed with a delicate hidden citrus orange aroma. If you simply order an American Coffee you will enjoy a very rich flavor. This place is a perfect spot to chill, work and grab a nice coffee with your friends.

Estela Café
Let’s talk about this cute and friendly coffee shop called “Estela Café”. This unique place located downtown Tijuana, will be one of your favorites with their lovely decoration and their friendly baristas who will help you and make sure you are having a great drink. I highly recommend a Lavender Latte with double shot of espresso, you can taste the lavender and the powerful taste of this coffee feel close to Nirvana. Since the first day I visited this place I was amazed with their latte and it’s flavor, so from the moment I first tried it I decided: “that one is my favorite”. I really love visiting this place on the weekends, especially on Saturday mornings because it’s not crowded and you will love to start your weekend with good coffee in a cute place.

The Wax Museum This museum was created in 1993 by the entrepreneur Ricardo G. Parra and was the second wax museum in the country, the first one was opened in Mexico City in 1979. The museum exhibits around 90 figures and -following the international protocols- is divided into four major themes: History, International Politics, Show Business and Horror. The historical part begins with pre-Hispanic characters, we advance through the times to find the figures of several Mexican Independence and Revolution heroes; another segment is dedicated to the time of the catholic missions and closes with local representations where the old “Tia Juana” stands out to remember the legend of Tijuana’s foundation. There is an area dedicated to world leaders, including several U.S. presidents such us Bill Clinton and Barack Obama. The tour ends with the Horror Gallery. Just a few blocks away from the Wax Museum, at a very convenient walking distance, you will find the Tijuana History Museum as part of the Municipal Institute of Arts and Culture, IMAC. The MuHTi is located in a historical building (1921) which hosted the municipal government until 1986. There is no better place to learn about the history of our city than this museum opened in the year 2010. It presents a simple but well documented narrative -in chronological order- illustrated with images and original epoch objects, most of them, donated by Tijuana’s oldest families. Its Permanent Exhibition Hall pays homage to the city, its history and inhabitants, on a journey through its natural and urban landscape, its economic and social life, its sporting practices and its artistic expressions. It also has a Lobby and a Children's Activities Room, as well as a program of educational activities and school tours. If you wish, you can spend some time in the same building visiting the city Art Gallery.
Take your time, this is a unique museum and has the magic of transporting us to our childhood just like in a time tunnel. It consists of three levels and more than 20 thousand objects ranging from traditional trains, to Disney characters and the super heroes of Marvel and DC as well as Mexican comics like Kalimán, Chanoc and Condorito. The second floor is dedicated to the Mexican “Lucha Libre”. The exhibition presents around six thousand objects related to the theme of wrestling. Here you will find an interactive ring where visitors can enter (the ideal spot to take a picture), and a hall with hundreds of masks and even the “scalps” of the unfortunates who have lost their battles. The third level is reserved for temporary exhibitions and currently presents an exhibition entitled “Black Wind”, on behalf of the classic Mexican film Viento Negro based on real events that reveal the raw stories that happened in the construction of the railroads in northern Mexico. Mucoti preserves some pieces from Le Chateau Restaurant such us a magnificent wooden bar that I am sure keeps many secrets of those who, at the time, went there to have fun or vent their sorrows. 7th St. Zona Centro Open Thursday to Sunday 10-6 pm

Sports Hall of Fame Finally, you can’t miss the Tijuana Sports Hall of Fame. To start with, you will find that the building of this museum is a replica of the Tower that was part of the legendary Agua Caliente Casino. The construction was an initiative of the Lions Club of Tijuana and began in 1984 with resources raised through a 48-hour air marathon, considered a feat by local pilot Sergio del Rio, member and president of the Lions Club. In 1990 it was settled as the headquarters of the Hall of Fame. The Tower is surrounded by a garden “Parque Fundadores” and consists of four floors that showcase photographs, objects and documents keeping track of the trajectory of famous athletes, as well as promoters and sports journalists. One of the goals of the museum is to motivate children and young people to practice a sport. In the different rooms you will get to know characters and teams of basketball, baseball, softball, racket games, baseball and soccer, to name a few. Also the Charrería, has a space where the achievements of the "National sport par excellence" are recognized. A space of privilege dedicated to those consecrated athletes who give pride to Tijuana. Museo de Cera El Museo de Cera de Tijuana se encuentra en el edificio que fue durante muchos años sede de la Cámara de Comercio de Tijuana. Este museo fue creado en 1993 por el empresario Ricardo G. Parra Montes y fue el segundo museo de cera del país, el primero se abrió en la Ciudad de México en 1979. El museo exhibe alrededor de 90 figuras que se dividen en cuatro grandes temas: Historia, Política Internacional, Espectáculos y Horror, siguiendo los protocolos internacionales de los museos de cera. La parte histórica inicia con imágenes prehispánicas donde se observa un impresionante sacrificio humano, después avanzarás hacia las épocas donde aparecen figuras de los héroes de la Independencia y la Revolución Mexicana; otro segmento se dedica a la época de las Misiones y se cierra con personajes locales donde destaca la anciana Tía Juana para recordarnos una de las leyendas de la fundación de nuestra ciudad. Hay un área dedicada a líderes del mundo como la Madre Teresa, incluyendo aquí a varios presidentes de Estados Unidos como Bill Clinton y Barak Obama. Lo que cierra este recorrido es la galería del terror. Nuestro guía, José Luis, además de las historias aquí representadas como la de Jack “El Destripador”, nos platicó sus propias experiencias al tener que enfrentar presencias misteriosas cuando va apagando las luces cada noche, antes de cerrar el museo. Museo de Historia de Tijuana A pocas cuadras del Museo de Cera, se encuentra El Museo de Historia de Tijuana. Forma parte del Instituto Municipal de Arte y Cultura, y se encuentra ubicado en un edificio histórico (1921) que albergó al gobierno municipal hasta 1986. No hay mejor lugar para aprender sobre la historia de nuestra ciudad que este museo inaugurado en el año 2010. El MuHTi presenta una narrativa simple pero bien documentada, en tiempo cronológico, ilustrada con imágenes y objetos originales de cada época, la mayoría de ellos, donados por las familias más antiguas de Tijuana. Su Sala de Exposición Permanente rinde homenaje a la ciudad, su historia y sus habitantes a través de un recorrido por su paisaje natural y urbano, su vida económica y social, sus prácticas deportivas y sus expresiones artísticas. Cuenta también con un Vestíbulo y una Sala de Actividades Infantiles, así como un programa de actividades educativas y recorridos escolares. Museo del Coleccionista Tómate tu tiempo, este es un museo singular y tiene la magia de transportarnos a nuestra infancia. Consta de tres niveles y más de 20 mil objetos que van desde los tradicionales trenes, hasta figuritas de Disney y por supuesto los súper héroes de Marvel y DC. Los comics mexicanos tienen su lugar para personajes como Kalimán, Chanoc y Cobdorito. El segundo piso está dedicado por completo a la Lucha Libre Mexicana. La exhibición presenta alrededor de 6 mil objetos relacionadas al tema de la Lucha Libre. Encontrarás en la entrada un ring interactivo al cual pueden entrar los visitantes, este es el spot ideal a para tomarse la foto y subirla a tus redes sociales. Cada vitrina presenta escenarios con diversos con objetos, máscaras y hasta las cabelleras de los infortunados que han perdido sus batallas. El tercer nivel está dedicado a exposiciones temporales, actualmente exhibe “Viento Negro” una exposición dedicada al tema de los ferrocarriles que también incluye carteles de esta película basada en hechos reales que relata las crudas historias que se vivieron en la construcción de las vías ferroviarias del norte de México. Mucoti conserva algunas piezas del restaurante Le Chateau como una magnifica barra de madera que ha de guardar muchos secretos de quienes, en su momento, fueron ahí a divertirse o desahogar sus penas.
Salón de la Fama del Deporte Por último, no te puedes perder el Salón de la Fama del Deporte de Tijuana. Encontrarás de entrada que el edificio de este museo es una réplica de la Torre que formara parte del Casino de Agua Caliente. La construcción fue iniciativa del Club de Leones de Tijuana y se inició su construcción 1984 con recursos que se recaudaron a través de un maratón aéreo de 48 horas, considerada como una hazaña del piloto local Sergio del Rio, miembro y entonces, presidente del Club de Leones. En 1990 se autoriza su destino como sede del Salón de la Fama. La Torre se encuentra rodeada por un jardín “Parque Fundadores” y consta de cuatro pisos
donde se conservan fotografías, objetos y documentos que registran la trayectoria de famosos deportistas, así como de promotores y periodistas deportivos formados en Tijuana. Uno de los objetivos del museo es motivar a los niños y jóvenes hacia la práctica de algún deporte. En las distintas salas se aprecian personajes y equipos de basquetbol, béisbol, softbol, juegos de raqueta, béisbol y futbol, por mencionar algunos. También la charrería, tiene un espacio donde se reconocen los logros del “Deporte nacional por excelencia”. Existe un espacio de privilegio dedicado a aquellos Deportistas Consagrados que dan orgullo a nuestra ciudad. Tú, ¿ya lo conoces?

Once again it is demonstrated that sport is one of the most important faces that Tijuana has to show off. The name of the city is heard locally and abroad thanks to the victories of our athletes. To close the year, we attended the Municipal Sports Award for Sports Excellence Ceremony, where the competition was very tight. Natalia Botello took the first place in the Conventional Sports category thanks to her silver medals, both in the Youth Olympic Games and the World Junior Fencing Championship. The second place went to the warrior of a thousand battles, the racquetball player Alvaro Beltrán, gold medal in the IRF World Championship, Pan-American Championship and Central American Games. The third place went to Maribel Orozco de León, who won three medals in the Central American Games. Other names to remember and keep track of are: Daniela Souza Naranjo, Tae Kwon Do; Crisna Michel Álvarez Rivera, Box; Carlos Francisco Varela Velázquez, Chess; Carlos Eduardo Santiago de Alba, Triathlon; Elizabeth Zamora Bravo, Lima-Lama; Maribel Orozco de León and Paola Limón Traviña, Bowling; Mario Erubey Moreno Sillas and Noé Samuel López Aguilar, Karate-Do; Salvador Velasco Franco, Athletics; and the couple Sanay Heredia Yasutaka and Frank Adrián Hernández, beach volleyball.
Natalia Botello, se llevó el primer lugar en la categoría Deportista Convencional gracias a su medalla de plata, tanto en los Juegos Olímpicos de la Juventud, como del Campeonato Mundial Juvenil de esgrima. El segundo lugar fue para el guerrero de mil batallas, el raquetbolista Álvaro Beltrán, medalla de oro en el Campeonato Mundial IRF, Campeonato Panamericano y Juegos Centroamericanos. El tercer lugar fue para Maribel Orozco de León, gracias a sus tres preseas en los Juegos Centroamericanos.

Patty Roa Patty Roa is a Tijuana artist whom we identify as a great landscape photographer. However, for decades she has also documented the unique richness of Tijuana's broad cultural spectrum including painting, music and dance. At Tijuana Visitor we recognize the value of her talent and, at the same time, the Danzón movement that is largely due to the impulse of Lorena Villaseñor and Francisco Guerrero. Here are images of different events, including the II Festival of Danzón Tijuana, 2018.

The metamorphosis of the fly Book-art by Silvia Galindo Betancourt It is known that Salvador Dali loved flies. Not only did they appear in his works, but also he used to put date honey in the corners of his lips and the tips of his moustache, to attract them while painting. In Tijuana, the artist Silvia Galindo Betancourt presented a book-art in Praga Café which illustrates, through 16 fantastic drawings, her reflection on the possible evolution of this insect, under the title: The metamorphosis of the fly. We synthesized some of those reflections and share a sample of her talent; it can be fully appreciated in Praga Café. In March, another presentation of this work will be shown at IMAC.
• If she (the fly) continues in the world, it is thanks to its great ability to predict attacks and to make decisions. • The fly has an exceptional sight through its spherical view and thousands of cells in each eye that keeps her always alert.
• In ancient times, some cultures homaged the fly. • The fly is practically immortal…and she knows it. • And if as they say, there is life in other galaxies, surely flies are also there.
Salvador Dalí adoraba las moscas. No solo aparecían en sus obras, él se ponía miel de dátil en las comisuras de los labios y la punta de sus bigotes, para atraerlas mientras pintaba. En Tijuana, la artista Silvia Galindo Betancourt presentó un libro-arte en Praga Café que ilustra a través de 16 fantásticos dibujos, su reflexión sobre la posible evolución de este insecto, bajo el título: La metamorfosis de la mosca. Aquí sintetizamos algunas de esas reflexiones y compartimos una muestra de su talento que puede apreciarse en Praga Café. En marzo, se realizará otra presentación de este trabajo en IMAC.

Eighty…and Counting is a book written by José Galicot Behar, a very well-known José Galicot business man from Tijuana, who celebrated his 80 years of age with this edition. In this book, Galicot writes among other anecdotes, how he started his first activities as a leader for the Jewish youngster community in Mexico. As you go on the reading, he also explains how he created several successful enterprises in a border city as Tijuana and the way he solved many challenges on the way, as well as lessons learned. Galicot is the president of Ochenta ...y contando Tijuana Innovadora, an altruist foundation which focus on several social programs and the promotion of the city in a broad sense. The book was recently presented in the FIL, International Book Fair in the city of Guadalajara, Jalisco.
