Exciting New Play Areas at Sywell Country Park
A
new Waterworks Tots Play and Picnic Area opened at Sywell Country Park this summer, next to the Pump House Cafe, featuring a play house, sand pit and water play table. Situated inside the Pump House Visitor Centre, a lovely new soft play unit for tots has also been provided at Sywell Country Park with activity panels, stackable bricks, a slide and a den area. We hope that the unit will encourage parents and guardians to enjoy the park no matter what the weather. The soft play unit is operated by the Pump House cafe next door for a small fee per child. The visitor centre itself is a wonderful large space, that is free to enter, with many heritage features and also books and other activities for children making it a great place to relax. All our country parks at Barnwell, Fermyn Woods, Irchester, Brixworth and Sywell now have cafés with adjacent play areas. The newest is the Hobbit play area at Barnwell. Pre-school children and their parents can enjoy an Education Ranger led nature walk followed by a craft activity with the Nature Tots groups who meet once a month in each park. The cost is £3.50 per child. Turn to page 9 to find out more about our wonderful country parks.

Meet the winner of our
Dad in a Million
Baby Ballet
A brand new class for your little one
Competition A T o celebrate Father’s Day, we teamed up with Red Letter Days in our summer issue to give one local man the treat of his life - a Ferrari Driving Experience! To enter we simply asked you to write in and tell us why you thought your husband/ partner/Dad is a Dad in a Million and deserving of this special prize. Thank-you for all your entries. After much deliberation we selected Chris Giles from Wellingborough who was nominated by his partner Libby. Although not her children’s actual father, Chris has been there for Libby and her 2 children since they were small. “My children love him like a father. He takes them on holiday, takes them to the park and he is even teaching my son golf. He has supported me when I went back to University to enable me to start a new career and given me the confidence to do it” says Libby “In return he asks for very little - just to be loved”. When asked why they love him, Libby’s children replied: Philippa: “He makes me laugh and smile, I love cuddling on the settee and reading to him“ Sebastian: “I love it when he teaches me golf, go karting and Football, he is really good” Good job Chris! We hope you enjoy prize.
t the Barbara Hooton School of Dancing we are often being asked about ballet for little ones. Ballet is a very disciplined art and we usually recommend an ideal starting age of 4; this is because tiny feet and ankle bones are still a little soft and we don’t want to damage precious limbs. However, lots of toddlers love music and movement so we have developed the perfect introduction to dance - Baby Ballet! Baby Ballet is a music-based half hour class for infants filled with fun and the joy of movement, including basic ballet steps that are muscle toning but without any stress on joints. Nicola Large is a fully qualified ballet and tap teacher and is thrilled to be welcoming children aged 2½ to 4 years old to Baby Ballet in Burton Latimer, Irthlingborough, Earls Barton and Ise Lodge. The cost for a ten week term is £40.00. Miss Nicola can be contacted on 07780 517740. Ballet and Tap classes for children of all ages and Keep fit classes for adults are held throughout the area - enquiries to Barbara on 07788 710144.

An Interview With Mister Maker! Ahead Of His First Ever Live Theatre Tour
W
By Beth, age 11
hen Mister Maker came to the Royal & Derngate in mid August to promote his forthcoming live theatre tour, which opened at the theatre on the 5th September, I despatched a team of mini-makers (namely my 3 children) to go and meet him, and tasked my elder daughter, Beth age 11, with the job of interviewing him (she was a big fan as a pre-schooler!): Hello my name is Beth and during my summer holidays my mum gave me an assignment of going to meet Mister Maker and asking him some questions. He was very kind when we went to meet him and helped my little sister, Olivia (aged 5) draw the shapes. He was also very friendly and chatted to all the children there. This September he is coming to the Royal and Derngate theatre in Northampton to perform an arty adventure. It is promising to be great fun for all ages, including silly dancing with the shapes and a big ‘make’ to join in with. These are the questions I asked him: QQ What did you do before you became Mister Maker? AA I have been working in children’s television for nearly 20 years - both in front and behind the camera. QQ How long have you been Mister Maker for? AA 8 years! Where has the time gone? Time flies when you’re having fun! QQ What would you want to do after you finish being Mister Maker? AA I never want to stop! QQ Have you always wanted to be a children’s TV producer? AA From an early age, I always wanted to work in children’s television. It is a dream come true. QQ Which is your favourite shape and why? AA I think I am most like Rectangle because he is very tall and likes to bounce around! QQ Which part of England were you born in? AA The Medway Towns - in a place called Gillingham. Home of a very famous football team! QQ What hobbies do you have? AA Watching Gillingham FC....and having a nice cup of tea with my Mum. QQ Did you like making things as a child? AA Always! I used to make Pompom Bugs with my Grandpa. QQ Is this your dream job, if not what would it be? AA This is definitely my dream job! QQ What is your favourite thing to make? AA Anything that is messy!

Clubs & Classes
Welcome to Bubble Babies! F
rom as soon as they step into the changing rooms on a Saturday morning at Kingsley School Kettering, my mini swimmers are full of excitement; looking forward to a fun-filled, dynamic session in a hydrotherapy pool as warm as the tropics! Babies from 3 months through to 5 years are welcomed into the class, bringing along mum, dad, auntie, uncle, even grandma and granddad, who are all invited to share these special early moments. Everyone can bond by being a part of the amazing journey from baby’s first splashes in the water to their first independent strokes.
As warm as a bath!
In the comfort of temperatures in the mid 30’s, both children and parents do not have to worry about whose lips are turning blue quickest (!) and they are able to focus solely on the aquatic skills introduced in the lesson that day. They maximise on their intricately structured 30 minute session, filling it from beginning to end with exercises, games, races and imagination; diving off their water taxi when it runs out of fuel to go get some more, swimming through caves full of spiders and tickle monsters and venturing through wild white water to Treasure Island! Everyone in the group interacts with the others to encourage even greater participation and achievement and progress can be quick and extremely satisfying! Baby steadily acquires an appreciation of all four strokes and steams towards being confident, happy and safe in the water, ABOVE and BELOW!
Look and learn
As a swimming teacher of 12 years, Erika considers it crucial to teach by example and with enthusiasm: ‘I always enjoy the looks on my toddlers’ faces when I straddle jump into the pool with accompanying tsunami(!) or jump out from under the water shouting ‘Jack in a Box’ and make them all jump! Laughter and enjoyment is a key factor to achieving success.’
Badges and Certificates
To celebrate everyone’s achievements, babies receive the Swimming Teachers Association Starfish Badges and Certificates, while the older children earn the Stanley First Steps Series Awards. Meet our Summer
Sponsored by
‘Mum in a Million’
B
ack by popular demand, we re-introduced our ‘Mum in a Million’ competition last issue to treat one local Mum to afternoon tea for two, courtesy of Red Letter Days. We asked you to write in with your nominations. Thank-you to everyone who did write in. It’s always a tough decision but we’re delighted to announce that Zoe from Raunds was picked as our summer ‘Mum in a Million’. Zoe was nominated by her partner Ryan. Here’s Zoe’s story (in Ryan’s words):
}
I would like to nominate my partner Zoe from Raunds. We have a daughter Megan, who is 3, and a son Jake who is 9 months old. Recently our son Jake was diagnosed with a liver cancer (heptoblastoma) and has been though a really tough time. It was a massive shock to us as he is only 9 months old. He has undergone chemotherapy in Nottingham which has been a testing time for us and all of our family. I would like to nominate Zoe for this prize as she has been with Jake every step of the way and has been an amazing mother to him. She often has to stay far away due to his treatment and she misses Megan while she is away. It is a challenging time but I feel that this would be a great treat for her to have a day or afternoon off and relax and enjoy herself.
}
We’re delighted to report that little Jake is doing very well. He has just had his last lot of chemo following his successful liver transplant so treatment is now, hopefully, over. He’s just waiting for his scans to confirm the cancer has all gone. Keeping everything crossed for you little man and keeping you in our thoughts and prayers.
We’re on the search for our Autumn Mum in a million... To treat her to “gourmet Dining for Two at Highgate House” Worth £75 and Courtesy of Red Letter Days
If you know a local Mum that really deserves a little treat, e-mail us with her name and the reasons you’re nominating her. Perhaps they’ve been through a rough time recently, been struggling on their own or are always doing things to help others. It could be your partner, sister, friend or even your own Mum. About the prize:
“Indulge in a spot of relaxation and great food at Northamptonshire’s award-winning Highgate House. The Terrace Restaurant invites you to take seats for three sumptuous courses from the table d’hote menu, which includes a host of delicious European inspired dishes, prepared using only the best fresh, locally sourced seasonal ingredients. To top things off, share a bottle of house red or white wine, then linger over coffee and mints. Boasting impressive contemporary decor, top notch food, an idyllic rural location and exceptional service, a meal at Highgate House really is a dining experience to remember.”
If you know a local Mum who really deserves to win this fantastic prize, please e-mail us with their name and story to: info@timefortots.co.uk Closing date: 23rd october 2015 Please mention Time for Tots when responding to an advertisement

Business Mum:
Leisa griffiths
From Teenie Boppers & Crazy Faces and Energize Fitness Name: Leisa Family: 5 children ranging from 6 to 22! Description of your business:
I run exercise & fitness and dance classes with sports massage and Zumba, Bollywood and yoga qualifications. I also run children’s parties through my Teenie Boppers & Crazy Faces business.
How long have you been doing this?
28 years! I qualified in 1991 and was a part time dance instructor for 10 years then went into fitness after having my 4th child.
What did you do before?
I was a beauty pharmacist’s consultant before I started my own business.
Why did you decide to start?
I decided to start my own dance school after having my second child. My first husband was a student at the time and I had two small children and my finances were covering all the household bills. The area where I worked only had a small ballet class on a Saturday morning. Dance had changed a lot over the years and there was a call for up-to-date street and modern dance. I spoke to parents from the local mums and tots class, of which I was chairman at the time, and they agreed they would send their children to the classes. The school started off as two children’s classes a week then expanded to five for all ages teaching different styles of dance. I then taught a mid-week adult tap dance class too. I went on to start my own party plan business using the skills and qualifications I had gained along the way. With insurance and a full DBS I now use my talents in entertaining children and adults, helping them to enjoy the fun of their special occasions with music, art (face painting) and dance.
What do you find are the disadvantages?
Some weekends my body aches from 36 hours of fitness, but at least I don’t have to worry about planning to get to the gym! When working for yourself there is no holiday pay, sick pay or pension. It is important to start that pension as soon as you can even if you can only put a small amount aside. I wish I had started mine sooner.
What advice would you give to other Mums thinking of working for themselves? Start small, have an idea, look for financial help and shadow someone already working in the field you fancy getting into and get advice from them. Also look at the local colleges around here, there are plenty of courses to choose from. There are also plenty of courses on-line now that can get you started and you can study while your little ones play at your feet. Then make sure the hours you put into either experience or study will pay off. You can work around your children, after all they must be your first priority.
What do you like about it?
The freedom to work around school hours and the children’s time table and run my business from home.
How well does it fit in with family life?
Perfectly. Except for school holidays, they can prove to be a challenge.

Operation Christmas Child
Launches a search for everyone who has ever packed a Shoebox
A
s part of this year’s Operation Christmas Child campaign, the charity Samaritan’s Purse is launching a nation-wide search for anyone who has ever packed a shoebox with them. Samaritan’s Purse UK Executive Director Simon Barrington explains: “We thank God for the 124 million children who have received shoebox gifts in Jesus’ name since Operation Christmas Child first began. “We want to hear from everyone who’s ever packed an Operation Christmas Child shoebox for a child in need, where and when they packed it, what they included, was there something particularly special they remember about their experience? We want to hear their stories of the impact it’s had on them and why they got involved.” Simon added that “In over two decades of Operation Christmas Child, individuals and families of all ages right across the UK have loved packing shoeboxes, from excited children to mums and dads, to granny and grandpa too. It’s a really helpful lesson for children to learn that there are other children around the world who are not as fortunate as they are. It’s also a great way for all of us to make a difference in a child’s life, to share God’s love, and to let them know they are loved and not forgotten. It’s a time to share the true meaning of Christmas with children around the world, about the birth of Jesus Christ.” Samaritan’s Purse plans to capture and share stories and photographs of everyone who’s ever been involved, and to bring to life online and through social media, what Operation Christmas Child has meant to so many people. Simon Barrington is encouraging everyone who has ever packed a shoebox to get involved in this year’s campaign: “Last year alone we were able to distribute more than 10 million shoebox gifts to children all over the world, some of whom live in the darkest of places. This year we want to reach a million more precious children with a simple shoebox gift, so that they also might know that they are being thought about this Christmas. With your help and prayers we will.” Tell us your story and help us to find everyone who has ever packed a shoebox! Go to: www.samaritans-purse.org.uk/yourshoeboxstory
How can you get involved? Whether you take part as an individual or family, or as part of a larger group (such as a nursery school, parent and tots group or local class), packing and preparing a shoebox couldn’t be easier. You will find lots of resources to order or download at the website:
www.operationchristmaschild.org.uk including what to put in your shoebox, how to pack it and where to drop it off.
Alternatively there is an ‘Operation Christmas Child’ leaflet which contains all the information you need, including labels for your box(es). Look in your local church and/or library for the leaflet. The deadline for submitting your shoeboxes is the 18th November, so be sure to pack and deliver your box(es) before then. Samaritans We’re here for you Who are we? What do we do?
S
amaritans offer confidential, emotional support to distressed, depressed, bereaved and suicidal callers, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. It is often easier for a caller to talk to a completely anonymous volunteer and reveal their most personal and distressing thoughts, rather than offload to a family member or friend for fear of worrying or upsetting that person. The Samaritans can be contacted by phone, e-mail, text or in person at our office in Montagu Street, Kettering, where we have a team of around 70 trained listening volunteers who give up their time freely and willingly, day and night, to help those in distress. We are here to listen and support callers but never to give advice. It is by talking through problems and crises that callers at the end of the conversation, which can be very lengthy, can see a possible course of action which is right for them. Follow-up calls can be offered in certain circumstances and arrangements made to ring the caller back to see how they are progressing. If the person is still distressed, another call may be suggested. Samaritans are self-funding and receive no state aid so raising money is ongoing to raise the £20,000 per annum it costs for phone calls, to maintain the premises in Montagu Street and provide a reliable service to callers. We receive 2,000+ calls a month in Kettering and over the Christmas and New Year period took a call every 6 seconds. Our message to all callers is that we do care, are here for you and you are never alone. Whatever you’re going through, the Samaritans go through it with you. You don’t need to be suicidal to contact us. 111 Montagu Street, Kettering, NN16 8XJ Tel: 01536 416999 or 08457-909090 Text: 07725 909090 Email: jo@samaritans.org
Kettering & District Samaritans
W
e are in the process of having a new system installed for connecting callers with Samaritan volunteers. At the moment, there are times when our callers get an engaged tone, even though there are volunteers available in other regions. With CONNECT, there will be more callers getting through to us, rather than hearing the engaged tone, especially during the night when there are fewer volunteers on duty. So once we go live with CONNECT, callers will always get through if there is a volunteer available to speak to them somewhere in the country. It will also help us to gather better data on call patterns, so we can find out when we need more volunteers on duty.
WHATEVER YOU’RE GOING THROUGH, WE’LL GO THROUGH IT WITH YOU

The Underwear Rule
Teach your child the Underwear Rule and help protect them from abuse
The Underwear Rule is a simple way that parents can help keep children safe from abuse - without using scary words or mentioning sex. The NSPCC has developed this simple guide for parents, (and a child-friendly version available online), to help you talk PANTS with your child. PANTS is an easy way for you to explain to your child the key elements of the Underwear Rule:
Privates are private
Be clear with your child that the parts of their body covered by underwear are private. Explain to your child that no one should ask to see or touch their private parts or ask them to look at or touch anyone else’s. Sometimes doctors, nurses or family members might have to. Explain that this is OK, but that those people should always explain why, and ask your child if it’s OK first.
Always remember your body belongs to you
Let your child know their body belongs to them, and no one else. No-one has the right to make them do anything that makes them feel uncomfortable. And if anyone tries, tell your child they have the right to say no. Remind your child that they can always talk to you about anything that worries or upsets them.
No means no
Make sure your child understands that they have the right to say “no” to unwanted touch - even to a family member or someone they know or love. This shows that they’re in control of their body and their feelings should be respected. If a child feels confident to say no to their own family, they are more likely to say no to others.
Talk about secrets that upset you
Explain the differences between ‘good’ and ‘bad’ secrets. Phrases like “it’s our little secret” are an abuser’s way of making a child feel worried, or scared to tell someone what is happening to them. Good secrets can be things like surprise parties or presents for other people. Bad secrets make you feel sad, worried or frightened. Your child needs to feel able to speak up about secrets that worry them and confident that saying something won’t get them into trouble. Telling a secret will never hurt or worry anybody in your family or someone you know and love.
Speak up, someone can help
Tell your child that if they ever feel sad, anxious or frightened they should talk to an adult they trust. This doesn’t have to be a family member. It can also be a teacher or a friend’s parent - or even ChildLine Remind them that whatever the problem, it’s not their fault and they will never get into trouble for speaking up.
