Spring 2020

A

fter what seems to have been one of the wettest winters on record the arrival of spring can’t come soon enough! Roll on those longer, warmer, brighter days and all the wonderful things spring brings with it..... In March we celebrate World Book Day and to mark the occasion the Northamptonshire Library Service have written an article for us on the importance of sharing stories with our children. Reading with children is so beneficial to their development in so many ways. Read all about how on page 9. We also celebrate Mother’s Day in March, this year on Sunday 22nd. Do you know why it’s on a different date each year? If not find out why on page 46! In April we have the lovely, long Easter weekend. Our spring events calendar, starting on page 34, and our Easter Eggtivities feature on pages 16 to 19 are once again packed full of activities and events, many of them free or for just a nominal fee so it needn’t cost a fortune keeping the children entertained. I hope all you Mums have a relaxing day on the 22nd March and I wish you all, all the joys of spring! Until the autumn....

World Book Day 2020

W

orld Book Day, a registered charity, was launched in 1995 to celebrate books and reading and to encourage children and young people to “discover the pleasure of reading”. The first World Book Day in the UK was in 1997 and it is now celebrated in over 100 countries all around the world! World Book Day 2020 is on Thursday 5th March.

Book Tokens Thanks to their partnership with National Book Token Ltd, and numerous publishers and book sellers, World Book Day are able to give almost every child and young person in the UK (under 18 years of age) a £1 book token, which they can exchange at participating books shops for a special ‘World Book Day’ book. Alternatively they can use the token to get £1 discount on a different book of their choice. Your child should receive their book token at their nursery school or school and they are usually valid until the end of March. The World Book Day book token will also be available on McDonalds Happy Meal boxes until the 17th March this year. If your child doesn’t receive a token you can still purchase one of the exclusive World Book Day books for the bargain price of £1 from any participating shop.

Share A Story World Book Day are running a campaign this year to get people sharing a story every day. Spending just 10 minutes a day sharing a story with a child can make a huge difference to their development. World Book Day are aiming to share a million stories during World Book Day month this year. Find out how you can get involved, and find many other useful resources, at:

www.worldbookday.com

There are 12 £1 World Book Day books available this year. Titles suitable for under 5s include:

Bing’s Splashy Story “Celebrate World Book Day 2020 with a brilliant new picture book story about Bing! It’s Bing’s bath time and he wants Flop to read him his favourite story. But books don’t like splashy baths, as Bing soon learns. Find out what happens when Bing’s bedtime book gets all drippy-wet and Bing and Flop are forced to use their imagination to finish the story. A charming new picture book about telling stories, overcoming adversity and the power of imagination. This World Book Day Bing picture book is sure to delight all toddlers!” Age guideline: 1 to 4 year olds

Supertato: Books Are Rubbish! “The Evil Pea thinks books are rubbish! Find out whether the veggies can prove him wrong in this brand new mini picture book created especially for World Book Day 2020. It’s night-time in the supermarket, and all the veggies are happily reading their brilliant books. Well, not quite all... The Evil Pea thinks books are rubbish! Is there anyone who can prove him wrong?” Age guideline: 3 to 6 year olds The full list of 12 books can be found at: www.worldbookday.com/books

The importance of Sharing Stories

T

hursday 5th March is World Book Day which this year is about sharing a million stories. Sharing stories, is not only a brilliant way to bond with your children and help their learning, it is also hugely beneficial to their mental health and wellbeing. Reading together for just 10 minutes a day can have a huge impact. Studies have shown that those who read for pleasure have higher levels of self-esteem and a greater ability to cope with difficult situations. Reading for pleasure was also associated with better sleeping patterns which is why sharing a story at bedtime is recommended. Stories are also a great way for children to learn about feelings and moods. You can discuss how characters feel and behave in different scenarios which can be very useful when trying to explain real life situations to a child. Reading together supports a child to develop their communication skills. Listening to different words and sounds from an early

age, particularly rhymes, help children to develop early literacy skills. This is very useful when they begin to learn to read and write themselves. Northamptonshire County Council Statutory Libraries will be holding special activities for World Book Day and they all provide weekly Rhymetime sessions to support parents and children with early learning. Some libraries also offer play sessions. The Weekly Activities Timetable in the back of this magazine lists some of the activities taking place in local libraries. For a more comprehensive list visit: www.northamptonshire.gov.uk/whatson or like your library’s facebook page. You can also follow them on twitter: @Library_Plus. Why Northampton High? C laudia joined Northampton High School in Year 4 and is now finishing her A Levels this year, hoping to read Psychology at University. Meeting with Claudia today, she explained the reasons why she enjoys being a pupil at Northampton High. Sitting happily, holding old school photographs of herself, Claudia reflected on the very different child she once was. Coming from a mixed school in France to a girls’ school in England, she arrived very shy, lacking in confidence and a bit withdrawn. “Completely different to how I am now. Spontaneous, confident, willing to fail” she smiles. Does she feel the school was a big influence in this change? “Absolutely”, she confidently replies. The picture she then paints of the school shows the passion that she has about personal growth that the school supports. She explains that the school enables girls to be more confident, most noticeably through the networking opportunities she has experienced being in the Head Girl Team and with her rapport with her teachers. Claudia attended the Girls’ Day School Trust summit in the autumn where she heard inspiring talks on female empowerment and how girls should lead the way and make up their own rules. “The talks were eye-opening, the friends I made, I still have. We even share ideas on events we can run in school”, she said excitedly. Reflecting on the teaching she emphasised how the small Sixth Form classes meant the teachers were approachable, “they welcome debate, love to hear our point of view and encourage us to do research to back up our views”. Being with girls she felt made her more likely to speak up in class, as she reflects “I don’t mind if I’m wrong, it literally doesn’t matter”. The fact that she attends an all girls’ school appears to have a big influence on Claudia. Does she mind not learning with boys? “I love not being in a school with boys”, she laughs. “I have my whole life for boys! Why can’t I just let my education be a priority? I’m only 18 when I go to Uni; so young”. Rather than debate this topic, Claudia was keen to discuss the clubs she is involved in, these being a great passion of hers. The Current Affairs club is her top tip for new girls to join. “It explains things in a gentle way. News is confusing otherwise.” And the UN club is another favourite. “We all get given a country and have to debate a topic after researching the country’s laws and views”. The vast amount of clubs and activities on offer at Northampton High clearly allows all girls to explore their passions. Claudia joined in the Junior School and felt that these years had a big influence on her. “I felt like I had a place for the first time. I was included”. A favourite memory for Claudia was her Year 4 teacher. Claudia lit up when describing the difference a good teacher can make to a child. “She just got us. She really understood us. I remember us all standing,

ar 4

Claudia in ye

talking and plaiting her hair”. When talking about the Junior School it was clear how much Claudia loved being in the school as a young girl. She explains that the teachers knew each girl and their level of learning. On a Science Experience Day in the Senior School she explained how “everyone was included, it was really cool how they knew us all and would make sure we were all involved”. So does she feel it was a benefit going right thorough the school? “Definitely; continuity is key for confidence. You can grow with those around you. I have friends who have helped and supported me in ways I didn’t even realise. The school gave me the skills to grab my opportunities. I have loved it.” An Interview with Claudia by Heather Berry, Northampton High School

Why Learn Baby & Child First Aid? Article by Chelsea from Daisy First Aid Kettering Do you stop yourself giving your baby certain foods because you’re terrified they may choke? Have you ever found yourself watching your child’s every breath when they sleep just in case something changes? Have you ever worried if you’re little one bumps their head what you should do?

W

hen faced with an accident or serious illness involving our own child, our world can stand still. Blood rushes to your head, pounds in your ears, your breathing quickens, your heart rate soars….and you freeze. You’re scared, you wonder if you do know what to do? Lack of information or knowledge contributes to those feelings of fright and helplessness. Attending a first aid class can help you massively in these situations, I always say knowledge is power. Learning first aid need not be scary, here at Daisy First Aid we have developed a class that is fun and informal, no scary stories, no awkward role play just simple, life saving information. Babies and young children are inquisitive, they have little to no sense of fear and do not understand potential consequences of actions. This unfortunately can lead to accidents. Choking is a common worry among parents, prevalent especially at the weaning age, but can happen at any age when something is inhaled or swallowed and becomes blocked. Babies and children can also be attracted to colourful objects such as laundry capsules, brightly coloured medications, berries on a tree…if ingested this could cause poisoning; knowing how to manage and monitor their ABC’s could save a life. Children riding bikes or scooters or even taking a tumble in the playground could sustain a head injury; do I let them sleep? No, I’m sure I must keep them awake….find out what signs and symptoms to

look out for in cases of head injuries, dispel the old wives tales. As well as accidents, our children could become unwell with fever, allergy or meningitis. You may have read something in the media but would you know what symptoms to look out for or when to call for medical assistance? If you feel it is time to get the answer to all of these questions (and probably a lot more) then a paediatric first aid course is for you. Being a parent or carer can be hard and we get tired and there never seems enough hours in the day but we also know it can also be the most rewarding job! The parenting journey is to be enjoyed, it really does pass by too quickly, one moment they are babes in arms, then a toddler and then probably a moody teenager (I’m yet to get to this stage!). Add a paediatric first aid class to your to-do list, have those skills under your belt and make the parenting journey just that bit easier! I run Daisy First Aid Kettering offering award winning classes to parents and carers. As a

13 mum myself I am passionate about teaching first aid to empower parents and carers alike. If you would like to learn more about CPR, choking, head injuries, meningitis and a lot more, you can attend a venue class or host a class in the comfort of your own home. Our classes take 2 hours and can be in evenings and at weekends to suit you. The cost is £25 per person and babies under 1 are welcome to come along. Keep in mind that paediatric first aid training is not just ideal for those who are parents. It can be very valuable to expectant parents, friends and the extended family. This type of training is something anyone can benefit from no matter what type of interaction you have with children. Our family first aid classes are accredited by CPD Standards Office.

Featured Class: Sing Squad What is Sing Squad? Sing Squad is a fun group singing class for children aged from 4 through to 18 years old. It is split into three groups, infants, juniors and seniors, to enable teaching to be specific to age.

What is the aim of the classes? The aim of these classes is to help children explore and develop their singing voices, whilst having fun and building confidence.

Talk us through a typical class A class will start with a circle sit down, where we each tell our ‘News of the Week’. This is followed by a physical warm up, then a vocal warm up where we use kazoos and singing games. Each week we have a focus, whether it is a particular type of sound or learning about a musical term. We then work on a song, breaking it down to help learning. Once the song is learnt we look at how we can add

different things to it, using the focus of that week to explore.

How do Sing Squad classes benefit children? These classes build up children’s confidence, which is the main feedback we get from parents. They also learn how to use their voices with someone who understands how children’s voices work and develop. This means that the teaching is tailored for the age groups.

What ages are the classes for? There are three classes: Sing Squad Infants is for children aged 4-7 (Reception to Year 2) Sing Squad Juniors is for children aged 7-11 (Year 3 to Year 6) Sing Squad Seniors is for children aged 12-18 (Secondary School)

When and where do you run classes? Classes take place during term-time at BHVA Studio, The Yards, Market Street, Kettering, NN16 0AH. We’re located on the top courtyard, opposite the blue shipping containers. Sing Squad Infants takes place on Mondays 4.15pm to 5pm Sing Squad Juniors takes place on Mondays 5.15pm to 6pm Sing Squad Seniors takes place on Tuesdays 6pm to 6.45pm

How long does each class last? Each class lasts for 45 minutes

How much does a class cost? Classes cost £6, and you pay per session

Fast becoming the most exciting, innovative and in-demand live music act for children in the UK, Andy And The Odd Socks have played over 100 shows including festivals such as Glastonbury, Camp Bestival, Victorious, Big Feastival, Shambala and many more. Woven into a colourful world of characters – which sees Andy rocking out as the Odd Sock’s front man, Rio from Planet Rock on guitar, mega Moxy on drums, cool Blu on bass and crazy Cousin Mac on the keys – the energetic songs hold a message of acceptance and encouragement for all those, young and old, who feel a bit like an odd sock, and will feature original songs from Andy Day’s brand-new TV Show, Andy and the Band which will debut on BBC iPlayer early next year. Performance at 4.30pm. Suitable for ages 3+ (ear defenders recommended for under 3s). Book online at:

22nd March 2020 Mothering Sunday 5 Facts About mother’s Day That may surprise you!

1. it has a religious origin

The origin of Mothering Sunday dates back to the 16th century when children working away from home used to visit their ‘mother church’ and families on the 4th Sunday of lent, known as Laetare Sunday. It wasn’t until the 20th century though when the daughter of a vicar, Constance Smith, started a move to have an official day dedicated to mothers. She was inspired by a lady in America, Anna Jarvis, who was trying to do the same thing over there. Laetare Sunday seemed the obvious date to choose as children traditionally visited their mother’s on that day anyway.

2. it is on a different date each year because it is linked to lent Because of it’s religious origin Mothering Sunday in the UK always falls on the fourth Sunday in Lent, exactly three weeks before Easter Day.

3. it is celebrated on different dates around the world In many countries Mother’s Day does not have a religious origin and so is not necessarily celebrated on the 4th Sunday of lent. In the USA for example it is celebrated on the second Sunday in May and is a day for celebrating and honouring mothers with no link to the church.

4. it’s original name is mothering Sunday Influenced by the USA it is becoming more widely known as ‘Mother’s Day’ in the UK these days, and celebrated in the same way as the US, but with it’s religious origin it was always known as Mothering Sunday traditionally.

5. it has many different names

They’re not widely used but Mothering Sunday (Laetare Sunday - the 4th Sunday in lent) is also known as Refreshment Sunday, Rose Sunday, Pudding-Pie Sunday, Simnel Sunday and the Sunday of the Five Loaves.

Could you be a Foster Carer?

Frequently Asked Questions about Fostering

What is it like to be a Foster Carer?

One of our valued Carers shares her views; “The reward of fostering is seeing the children you care for blossom. I have had the privilege of seeing children in my care obtain trophies, awards for competitions and for them to have the opportunity to use their talent and skills to contribute to community events. They have passed school and college exams as well as a driving test. The change in their self-image and confidence has been wonderful to behold. I feel honoured to be a Foster Carer and I feel better that a child refugee’s birth mother knows that her son is alive and well and that he is being cared for. I have seen that words of encouragement, consistency and working with the child makes a difference with time.” When you Foster, you invest in that child’s life. You have the opportunity to make a difference that will be lifelong.

a policy in place for Foster Carers, many places offer leave similar to maternity/paternity or parental leave.

i’ve never worked with children before, does that matter?

That’s not a problem, you don’t need any qualifications or experience. We offer a great training package which will help you gain confidence in your own abilities and develop new skills.

i’ve got criminal convictions, does that automatically rule me out?

Not necessarily. Criminal convictions in the past may not affect your application – though you should be honest about them from the start. Convictions against children do automatically disqualify anyone from fostering.

Do i need to own my own property to Foster? No, you can own your home or rent a home anywhere in Northamptonshire.

i’m a single parent, can i Foster?

Of course you can. Part of the assessment will explore your support network, in the same way you already have one for your own child. It’s important to remember your relationship status is not a barrier, you may be single, married or divorced, living together or in a same sex couple.

i already have children, do i need to wait until they are older? It doesn’t matter whether or not you have your own children or if they are still living at home.

i’m working, can i continue if i want to Foster?

You can be working, unemployed or retired. Your Social Worker can talk to you about training and other times you may need to be available. Also, it is worth checking with your employer if they have
