G
oodbye Summer, hello Autumn! And hello to a new term and the return of routine after the summer break. With the clubs and classes all resuming, September is a good time to try something new.... I read with interest the article by Northampton High School on page 9: “Lost Words and World: Is it time to say goodbye to the buttercup”. Mental health issues in children are becoming a bigger and bigger issue and many studies have cited an increasing lack of involvement with nature as being a contributing factor. Children these days are swapping screens for the great outdoors and it is having a serious detrimental effect on their mental well-being. The emergence of Forest Schools, however, is an attempt to combat the issue. Many nursery and pre-schools now offer ‘forest school’ education (some are even outdoor nursery schools - see Daffodils Outdoor Nursery on page 52) and local venues such Mini Meadows Farm and the Nene Wetlands Centre at Rushden Lakes are offering their own Forest School classes for parents and children. So if you’re looking to start a new activity or class this autumn, why not try a Forest School or nature club and get your little one interested in nature from a young age. Of course keeping active and developing interpersonal skills are equally important for a child’s physical and mental health and there are many different classes to try in our Clubs & Classes section, starting on page 35, that help develop such skills. Have a great autumn all. Until the winter....

Lost Words And World.....
Is it time to say goodbye to the buttercup?
Times are changing but does this mean our children will forget how amazing the natural world can be?
Article by Northampton High School northamptonhigh.co.uk
Seven years ago, Oxford University Press published a new Junior Dictionary. Making space for newly-emerging words – analogue, broadband, chatroom – publishers removed words ‘fallen into disuse’, including acorn, buttercup and conker. A furore followed; not because the technology-related words were not relevant but because many felt that losing the nature-orientated words would mean losing the link between the natural world and future generations. Many people believe that the link has been lost already, that the natural world has become a lost world to the young. The term ‘Nature Deficit Disorder’ – coined by Richard Louv, in 2005 – has been widely used to describe the detrimental effects, on physical and mental health, of children’s disengagement from nature. The stats paint a concerning picture – with a third of under-16s being overweight and an ‘epidemic of mental illness’ afflicting the young. In response, many efforts ensue to re-engage children with the Great Outdoors. Amongst the initiatives, an illustrated book of poems, ‘The Lost Words,’ has taken the literary world by storm, scooping the Kate Greenaway Award and inspiring a campaign across Scotland to get a copy for every primary school. Schools are crucial to the success of this endeavour. By taking learning outdoors and using objects from nature to assist in a range of subjects, they can deliver on keeping
the words and the worlds of nature alive in students. Forest School is also a brilliant starting point. Much more than an outdoor education programme, it is a fully integrated, structured programme of activities, underpinned by research, risk assessment, combining bushcraft, skills-building, environmental awareness, character education and personal wellbeing. The natural world can also be embraced at home too. By teaching children that ‘dirt is not the enemy’ and that the most fun they can have is running around and being free to build a den, to care for animals, to examine the changing seasons around them. To just be.
Highlight nature at home:
•
•

You could engage with your child about what plants and trees they can see around them when they are at the park. If you can, take along some pictures of trees and see if you can identify them, the shape of the leaves is a great starting point. Encourage your child to look higher and dig deeper. Simply lie on the floor to look up at the tall trees. Lying on the floor with you will be fun in itself, add some binoculars and there will be lots to talk about. Encourage your child to then rummage around the forest floor, do a bug hunt and see who lurks under the leaves. Most importantly just enjoy being outside, whatever the weather may be.

Caring for your Child’s Feet
F
unky Lil Feet is a specialist childrens shoe shop that is now heading into its 15th year. They pride themselves on offering a friendly but professional fitting service with a huge selection of brands. Owner Claire Fox has some tips and advice to help parents with their child’s foot-health. As a babies foot is not just a smaller version of our own it is vital that their little feet are well looked after. At birth the 26 bones that will eventually make the adult foot are mainly just cartilage which makes them very pliable and susceptible to damage. To allow for your babies feet to develop without distortion please ensure there is plenty of room in their Babygro’s and make sure little socks are not too tight to prevent curling of the toes, which can cause permanent damage to growing bones. For the Toddler and Young Child, don’t force your child into walking. They will start when they are ready which can be anything from 9 months to 20 months of age. Encourage barefoot walking when indoors as this allows the foot to develop and strengthen. When your child is on their feet and attempting their first tottering steps you are ready to buy their first fitted tot style shoes. Always have their feet professionally measured and fitted in a store where they
By Funky Lil’ Feet
accommodate different width fittings and half sizes. Feet are very different and at Funky Lil Feet we take into account not just the “measured” size but also the shape and depth of the foot to ensure we get the best fit for your child. Inspect your childrens feet regularly as they often can’t feel any damage being done by ill fitting shoes. Look for any abnormalities such as cuts or breaks in the skin or redness. Likewise it is best to have their feet checked every 6-8 weeks in store. We will give you an honest assessment, our fitters are not paid any commission, we simply want to give you the best service that we can. There is free parking right outside the store and a very friendly welcome awaits! er in int W now & s mn oot tu B Au & s oe Sh

Rowena Mcnally Recognised For ‘Gold-Standard Support’ At National Slimming Event
W
eight-loss Consultant Rowena McNally is celebrating after being recognised for the exceptional work she does to support people in and around East Northants achieve their dream weight. She was one of around 150 high-achieving Team Developers from across the UK and Ireland invited to Slimming World’s ‘Team Developer Thank You Day’, at the organisation’s head office in Derbyshire. Attending the event is extra-special this year as Slimming World is celebrating it’s 50th golden birthday year*. Rowena, a Consultant for the Thrapston Slimming World group, was invited to the event after being recognised by the company as a leading Team Developer. This means that as well as running her own weight-loss group, she is doing an outstanding job of supporting other Consultants in East Northants to ensure excellent service to slimmers right across the area. And, as part of the day, Rowena, who became a Consultant after she graduated from the Slimming World Academy in December 2015 was invited to discuss best practice and share her tips on delivering a first-class weight-management service. They were also treated to a healthy banquet at the company restaurant. Rowena says: “It was a real honour to be invited to the special day at Slimming World HQ, and in Slimming World’s golden birthday year it feels extra-special! The day itself was so inspirational from start to finish. To have had the opportunity to meet and share ideas with other top-performing Consultants and managers was an experience I’ll never forget. I left Derbyshire brimming with ideas and raring to get home, and there’s no doubt the insight will enable me to improve the support I give to other consultants in the area, so that anyone who attends Slimming World in East Northants, including the members who attend my Slimming
World group each week, get the very best possible service and support to achieve their weight-loss dreams. It’s great to be able to tell people in our local area that they have some of the best Slimming World groups in the UK and Ireland on their doorstep. Being recognised isn’t just a triumph for me but also for the thousands of members and Consultants in the East Northants groups. They’re the ones who make each group the success it is, with their fabulous energy, the warm welcome they give to new members and the wonderful compassionate support they show to each other every week. That’s as well as their impressive weight losses while following Slimming World’s Food Optimising eating plan and getting more active, of course. They’ve lost an amazing 1000’s of pounds this year, and each week as members lose weight I see them growing in confidence. I see them changing their health, becoming more active, trying out new foods and recipes, and finding the courage to take on challenges that they’ve always dreamed of. Members who arrive at group with their self-esteem at rock bottom start to hold their heads high and stand tall as they lose weight successfully and are encouraged and supported to make changes by the rest of the group.” Like all Slimming World Consultants, Rowena lost weight at a group herself and so knows just how valuable group support can be. Consultants receive in-depth training from the Slimming World Academy to help give their members the support they need to make long-term changes to improve their health and wellbeing as well as passing their new habits ion to their family. Training includes the role of diet and activity in weight management. Crucially, it also includes training in how to help members to lift the guilt and shame they may feel as a result of struggling with their weight and help them to form healthy lifestyle habits. To join Rowena’s Thrapston Group, which is held every Monday at 5.30pm & 7.30pm at Thrapston Baptist Church, either pop along or give Rowena a call on 07714 854762. *To find out more about Slimming World’s Golden Summer of Celebration visit: www.slimmingworld.co.uk/golden

Featured Class: MiniTrix Pre-school Gymnastics What is MiniTrix Pre-school Gymnastics?
Gymnastics classes for those aged 2 to school age in a dedicated gymnastics facility in Irthlingborough.
What is the aim of the classes?
To develop balance, co-ordination, confidence and a love of sport and physical activity at an early age.
Talk us through a typical class
5 minute welcome and warm up to an activity song, linked to the theme of the week (weather, transport, day at the beach, jungle etc). 10 minute activity circuit on our sprung floor based on the theme of the week involving climbing, rolling, balancing and jumping on and off equipment, and use of fine motor skills. 2 x 10 minute activity circuit on two of our pieces of apparatus – swinging and holding shapes on bars, walking along high beam, jumping and running practice for vault. 10 minute final activity song and cool down with a sticker awarded at the end for a job well done. Our 2 to 3 classes are British Gymnastics coach led but parents assist the children with the circuits of activities. Our 3 to 4 classes are independent and coached by our British Gymnastics qualified staff. All staff have an up to date DBS and Safeguarding qualification.
How do MiniTrix Pre School gymnastics classes benefit children?
The classes are specifically designed to incorporate educational elements such as learning new vocabulary, practising colours, shapes and numbers. The children are encouraged to try new things in a very safe environment and receive lots of encouragement and praise whatever stage they are at. They make solid friendships with others in their group and learn important lessons such as sharing, listening and following instructions and working as a team. All of this in addition to assisting their physical development in a fun, friendly and engaging environment. The vast majority of our pre school gymnasts move on to attend our mainstream classes when they start school.

Welcome to Bubble Babies!
F
rom as soon as they step into the changing rooms on a Saturday morning at Kingsley School Kettering, Bubble Babies’ swimmers are full of excitement; looking forward to a fun-filled, dynamic session in a hydrotherapy pool as warm as the tropics! Children from 3 months through to 5 years are welcomed into age appropriate, half hour classes bringing along mum, dad, auntie, uncle, even grandma and granddad, who are all invited to either swim with baby or watch and share these special early moments. Everyone can bond by being a part of this amazing journey from baby’s first splashes in the water to their first independent strokes. As warm as a bath! In the comfort of water temperatures in the mid 30’s, both children and parents do not have to worry about whose lips are turning blue quickest(!) and they are able to focus solely on the aquatic skills introduced in the lesson that day. They maximise on their intricately structured 30 minute session, filling it from beginning to end with stamina building exercises, swimming and safety skills, games, races and imagination; diving off their water taxi when it runs out of fuel to go get some more, swimming through caves full of spiders and tickle monsters and venturing through wild white water to Treasure Island! Everyone in the group interacts with the others to encourage even greater participation and achievement and progress can be quick and extremely satisfying! Your child will steadily acquire an appreciation of all four strokes and will steam towards being strong, confident, happy and safe in the water, ABOVE and BELOW! Look and learn! As a swimming teacher of 16 years, Erika (founder and main teacher at Bubble Babies) considers it crucial to teach by example and with enthusiasm: ‘I always enjoy the looks on my toddlers’ faces when I straddle jump into the pool with accompanying tsunami(!) or jump up unexpectedly from under the water, pretending to be an alien, and make them all jump! Laughter and enjoyment is a key factor to achieving success.’ Badges and Certificates To celebrate everyone’s achievements, children receive the Swimming Teachers Association Starfish Badges and Certificates, while the older children earn the Stanley First Steps Series Awards. For children with special needs there is the Rockhopper series, ensuring that everyone
is challenged in appropriate ways and has the opportunity to enjoy the self-affirming satisfaction of success. By firmly establishing the principles of good swimming technique in an encouraging, happy environment, Bubble Babies aims to create multi-skilled, water-confident, safety-conscious swimmers with a lifelong love, respect and enjoyment of the water. underwater Photo Shoot On 7th December we have another Underwater Photograph session lined up and this exciting event is open to anyone who would like to come along and is confident in going under the water. What better souvenir of those happy times and earliest swims? Ask the parents! Fiona and Ian were so delighted when their son, Ollie, took part in his first Triathlon at the age of five having earlier completed several terms at Bubble Babies. He particularly excelled himself in the swimming pool where, the youngest in his age group by far, he was so excited and determined he managed to swim well over a length of the 50 metre pool (unaided) in the 2 minute time allotment. ‘I know he wouldn’t have had the fun and confidence he has in the water if it wasn’t for your lessons – thank you,’ emailed Fiona when she shared the fantastic news with me, ‘he loves swimming more than ever!’ Book now! You’ve read all about us, now come along and see Bubble Babies in action. Bubble Babies classes are always very popular so please book early if you would like to join in the adventure! A Short Guide to Febrile Seizures
By Daisy First Aid
What is a febrile seizure and why do they happen? A febrile seizure (febrile convulsion) is a fit that a child can have when they get a high temperature of 38oC or above. These seizures are most common between the ages of 1 and 4 years. They affect about 1 in 20 children, who may experience them because at this age their brain is not yet fully developed enough to cope with a high temperature. They usually happen when a child has a raised temperature caused by an infection, such as tonsillitis or an ear infection. (A raised temperature in a child under the age of 5 is 37.5oC, however febrile seizures are most common with a high temperature above 38oC). It can be very frightening to see your child having a seizure, but it is important to stress that in most cases febrile seizures are not harmful and almost all children make a full recovery.
How will I know my child is having a febrile seizure? The signs of a febrile seizure are: • Loss of consciousness • The body becomes rigid with clenched fists and an arched back and they may hold their breath • Arms and legs twitching and jerking • Rolling of the eyes • Clenched jaw • Foaming of the mouth or vomiting • They may also wet or soil themselves The seizure will usually last less than 5 minutes.
What can I do to help?
• •
• • • •
• • •
Try to remain calm Protect their head and move any dangerous objects away to try to prevent injury. (Although it’s understandable to want to hold them to comfort them, its important not to, as restraining them may cause injury) If they are vomiting/foaming at the mouth turn them gently onto their side Do not put anything into their mouth Call 999 When the seizure stops, check the child’s airway and breathing. If both are ok, place them in the recovery position and continue to monitor their airway and breathing until help arrives. In the unlikely event that they are not breathing or stop breathing, start CPR They are likely to be very sleepy, so allow them to rest Remove clothing or bedding and open a window to allow them to cool gently, but take care that they don’t get cold If possible, try to time the seizure and once the seizure is over take your child’s temperature, as this is useful information for the paramedics and doctors
As parents, we all expect our child may develop a temperature from time to time, but if you are ever concerned always seek medical advice early and trust your instincts. If you suspect your child is getting worse act quickly. To advertise call 0845 6439687 or e-mail info@timefortots.co.uk

Top Tips for Choosing Childcare: 1. Consider your child’s age and needs. Younger children need closer attention. Some children flourish in small groups, others in larger groups. 2. Consider what hours you need childcare. Some providers offer cover early morning and later in the evening. Some providers are school term time only. 3. Look around the facilities. Are they clean and safe? 4. Ask about the activities the provider offers. Do they offer a range? Will your child be stimulated? 5. Look at the menu available. Will they cater for special requirements? 6. Ask for references and speak to other parents. 7. Consider combining childcare if it would benefit you and your child 8. Don’t leave it to the last minute to book your childcare. Some providers have waiting lists. 9. Take your child with you when you look around and watch their reaction. With older children you can usually tell if they’re comfortable somewhere or not. 10. Research all your options well. Don’t be afraid to ask questions.

Could you be a Foster Carer?
Frequently Asked Questions about Fostering
What is it like to be a Foster Carer?
One of our valued Carers shares her views; “The reward of fostering is seeing the children you care for blossom. I have had the privilege of seeing children in my care obtain trophies, awards for competitions and for them to have the opportunity to use their talent and skills to contribute to community events. They have passed school and college exams as well as a driving test. The change in their self-image and confidence has been wonderful to behold. I feel honoured to be a Foster Carer and I feel better that a child refugee’s birth mother knows that her son is alive and well and that he is being cared for. I have seen that words of encouragement, consistency and working with the child makes a difference with time.” When you Foster, you invest in that child’s life. You have the opportunity to make a difference that will be lifelong.
a policy in place for Foster Carers, many places offer leave similar to maternity/paternity or parental leave.
I’ve never worked with children before, does that matter?
That’s not a problem, you don’t need any qualifications or experience. We offer a great training package which will help you gain confidence in your own abilities and develop new skills.
I’ve got criminal convictions, does that automatically rule me out?
Not necessarily. Criminal convictions in the past may not affect your application – though you should be honest about them from the start. Convictions against children do automatically disqualify anyone from fostering.
Do I need to own my own property to Foster? No, you can own your home or rent a home anywhere in Northamptonshire.
I’m a single parent, can I Foster?
Of course you can. Part of the assessment will explore your support network, in the same way you already have one for your own child. It’s important to remember your relationship status is not a barrier, you may be single, married or divorced, living together or in a same sex couple.
I already have children, do I need to wait until they are older? It doesn’t matter whether or not you have your own children or if they are still living at home.
I’m working, can I continue if I want to Foster?
You can be working, unemployed or retired. Your Social Worker can talk to you about training and other times you may need to be available. Also, it is worth checking with your employer if they have
