Winter 2018 Contents
I
t’s the most magical time of the year again! Get out those diaries and start planning your festive season. Plenty to keep the little ones entertained this December with Christmas activities, pantomimes and grottos galore! See our guide starting on page 10. Turn to page 61 for your chance to win a family ticket to Wicksteed’s ‘Magical Christmas Experience’ or a family ticket to see The Castle Theatre’s pantomime ‘Cinderella’ this December. Our fourth and final instalment of “40 things to do in Northamptonshire before your child starts school”, is on pages 8 to 9. We hope you’ve found the feature useful this year and got a few ideas for things to do. Winter always sees a rise in the number of bugs circulating around. Leah Salmon, from The Naturally You Clinic, has written some tips for us on how we can help ourselves and our children to stay bug free this winter. Of course all 2 to 10 years olds are now entitled to a flu vaccine every winter to keep them free from the flu. The 0 to 19 Health Visiting Team have written a myth-busting article for us on the Fluenz Programme to answer any questions you may have. Have a fantastic Christmas and a very Happy New Year!

Clip ‘n Climb comes Tots News to Wicksteed Park Stars of Peter Pan Come to Northampton And we took our competition winner to meet them
D
arren Day, Flawless,The Grumbleweeds and Abigail Dever brought a touch of early Christmas magic to Northampton in September as they officially launched Peter Pan, this year’s swashbuckling Royal & Derngate pantomime, with a photo call at Northampton’s Riverside Hub play centre. You may have seen we ran a competition through our Facebook page for one lucky reader to meet the stars at the press launch and have their photo taken for our Winter front cover. Our lucky winner was little Zara, age 4, from Wellingborough. The normally bubbly Zara was uncharacteristically shy (her parents tell us!) when meeting the stars but she agreed to pose with them and we got the lovely shot that’s now displayed on our cover. Peter Pan runs from Friday 7th to Sunday 30th December. Packed to the crows-nest with laughout-loud comedy, spectacular special effects, music and action, audiences shouldn’t leave it any longer to hook tickets to Northampton’s high-flying pantomime adventure, Peter Pan, or they’ll be forced to walk the plank. For more information or to book tickets, call the Box Office on 01604 624811 or visit:

40 Things to do in Northamptonshire... ...before your child starts school Our fourth and final instalment of 40 things to do in Northamptonshire before your child starts school....
10 things to do in
1 2
Visit Santa!
Santa makes several visits to Northamptonshire in the run up to the big day so you can see him in a whole host of different locations. Turn to our Christmas What’s On guide for where he’ll be appearing this season. No festive season is complete without a visit to the big man. Remember to take your Christmas list!
Visit the West Lodge Christmas Experience West Lodge really go to town when it comes to Christmas creating a very magical experience. Children can visit Santa in his wonderful grotto (we’re sure it’s the real Santa too), take part in a live nativity play, make reindeer food and write their Christmas letters. As well as all the usual fun of the farm. The West Lodge Christmas Experience is very popular and can get booked up very quickly so we strongly recommend you book online first: www.westlodgeruralcentre.co.uk
3 Go Ice Skating 4
Watch The Polar Express
Watching Christmas films is all part of the build up and excitement for the big day and one of the best Christmas films EVER has to be The Polar Express! A firm favourite with young and old.
Beckworth Emporium is home to a large ice rink every festive season where people of all ages can enjoy a go at Ice Skating. They hold special parent and toddler sessions too with special twin blade bob-skates for little ones and push along penguins to make things as easy and fun as possible. Pushchairs are allowed on the ice during these sessions too. Book your time slot online at: www.iceemporium.com Please mention Time for Tots when responding to an advertisement

Go to a Pantomime

Make a snowman
7 8
Read books together with a mug of hot chocolate!
9
Pantomimes are great fun for all ages and you’re almost guaranteed to leave with a smile on your face. We’re lucky to have several fantastic theatres in this area so a choice of shows to see. Turn to page 18 for our guide. We’re giving away tickets to see ‘Cinderella’ at The Castle Theatre this Christmas. Turn to our competitions page for details on how to enter.
If we’re fortunate enough to have some snow in the winter then an afternoon making a snowman is a wonderful family activity. There is plenty of fun to be had in the snow making snow angels and having friendly snow ball fights! Sledging too although we’ve listed this as a separate activity below!
On a cold winter’s day there’s nothing more comforting than snuggling up on the sofa reading books together with a mug of hot chocolate! Reading is so beneficial to children too.
Go Sledging
If we get some snow sledging is another fantastic activity to do with your children. If we don’t get the snow though the SnoZone at Milton Keynes offers family sledging sessions, as well as ski-ing and snowboarding. Visit www.snozoneuk.co.uk for more information.
Spend an afternoon in an indoor play centre with friends
Indoor play centres are a godsend for letting the children burn off some energy when it’s cold outside and they’re bouncing off the walls at home! If you visit with friends too the children have even more fun and the parents get to catch up over a cuppa.
10
Buy a present for someone else
There’s no better time than Christmas for thinking of others and teaching children the importance of giving as well as receiving. Take your children shopping to choose a present for a family member. Or better still buy a present for a complete stranger who is less fortunate. Operation Christmas Child is a fantastic scheme for giving gifts to children around the world who would otherwise get nothing at Christmas. The deadline is usually in November though so you have to be organised early to take part. There are usually plenty of other schemes to take part in however, organised by local churches or supermarkets, donating gifts and/or food. Tuesday 27th November to Sunday 30th December w o r l d première production of The Worst Witch opens at Royal & Derngate this Christmas as part of the theatre’s Made in Northampton season. An original story for the stage by Emma Reeves based upon Jill Murphy’s beloved series of classic novels The Worst Witch. The Worst Witch is the story of an ordinary girl who finds herself in an extraordinary place: a school for witches. They leave a trail of mayhem behind them as they find themselves at the centre of a battle that could threaten not just the Academy but the whole world. Featuring magic, puppetry, original music and plenty of Mildred’s unique brand of utter pandemonium, the production will be directed by Theresa Heskins, whose past productions include The Snow Queen which won the 2017 UK Theatre Award for Best Show for Children and Young People. Tickets are priced from 11*. For more information or to book tickets, call Royal & Derngate’s Box Office on 01604 624811 or visit www.royalandderngate.co.uk. Little Kickers
Football Fun for children aged 18 months to 7 years
W
e have four different football classes each tailored to a different age group. However, we have two core beliefs that we take into every session. Firstly, we believe in something we call “Play not Push”. It means teaching football in a fun, pressure-free environment. We want to give children a positive introduction to sport as a whole, not just football, so they’re more likely to stay healthy and active throughout their lives. Secondly, we believe football can be educational. Coached in the right way it can stimulate imagination and aid early development skills such as learning colours and numbers, following instructions and playing as a team. It’s an approach that has bagged us awards and helped us expand locally (and globally) over the last 10 years. We now have almost 500 children attending our classes each week and run in Kettering, Corby, Desborough, Fleckney and South Leicestershire. And like all our Kickers, we never stop learning. We’re continually improving and updating our classes, based on feedback from child health specialists, parents and our network of coaches. Owner and Coach, Emma Ogden, talks about why she feels classes are so popular: “Simply put I think it is because we care about every single one of our coaches and ‘Kickers’ which shows in our sessions. The children and parents are of utmost importance to us and we will always do our best to ensure they enjoy our classes. We focus on having fun in every class, which means that children and parents look forward to their class every week. It also means we can create the best learning environment for children to improve and develop not just their football skills but social skills such as confidence, leadership and sharing.”
Badge Scheme Little Kickers have just implemented a new badge reward system, which demonstrates how children progress within classes. This consists of 24 uniquely designed badges across the 4 age groups, Little Kicks, Junior Kickers, Mighty Kickers and Mega Kickers. There is a new badge for each age group every 3 months that children will get to iron onto their Little Kickers kit. There is a list of skills associated with each badge that children are working towards. For children who are new to classes we have unique participation badges too. A number of our classes do have waiting lists because they are just so popular but we are hoping to launch a number of new classes soon so if you would like to enrol at a class nearby please visit www.littlekickers.co.uk or email eogden@littlekickers.co.uk.

The Fluenz Programme by Emma Muddiman
Community Staff Nurse and Link Immunisation Nurse in the Northampton 1 team of the 0-19 Team
It’s that time of year again when the Flu Virus is around – this article explains how a safe, painless nasal spray can protect your little ones. Who is being offered the Flu vaccination this year? This year the flu vaccination programme is being offered to all healthy children aged 2 4 years (if not at school) via their GP practice. Children in school years reception through to year 5 will be offered this vaccination in their school environment. Children with certain health conditions such as severe asthma, leukaemia or are being treated with high dose oral/inhaled steroids should not be given the nasal flu vaccination but can be safely vaccinated with the injectable flu vaccination through their GP practice. Children with proven severe egg allergy resulting in hospitalisation should also not be given the vaccination as it contains traces of egg proteins. There are flu vaccinations available which contain low or no egg content; this would need to be discussed with the GP practice you are registered with. If your child is home schooled you can access the Fluenz via the 0-19 team directly or via your GP.
protecting them but it will also help reduce the spread of flu to other family members and the wider community, particularly those who are vulnerable and unable to receive the vaccination themselves. Those vulnerable people in our community that we all protect by having our flu vaccine can include adults and children with autoimmune conditions, cancer and other diagnoses.
Why is my child being offered the flu vaccination?
How will the flu vaccine be administered?
Flu is highly infectious and is spread via droplets released during sneezing, coughing and even talking! It can be a very unpleasant illness for children causing fever, stuffy noses, sore throats, aching muscles and joints and extreme tiredness, which may last several days. In some cases where children have an extremely high temperature they may require hospital admission for treatment. Children are very good at spreading flu and by vaccinating them you are not only
The vaccine to be used is a live nasal spray called ‘Fluenz Tetra’. It comes in a pre-filled syringe with a dose divider and a small amount of liquid is sprayed into each nostril. It is needle free and painless. Many children liken it to a fizzy bubble sensation in their nose! Nurses and health care professionals visit local schools throughout 0ctoberDecember to administer this vaccination to all eligible children with completed consent forms; these will be sent out to the schools

39 several weeks before the session. It is important to reassure your child that this is not a jab but a simple painless nose spray. If your child is absent on the day the team visits, you will be sent a letter home detailing how to access community immunisation clinics across the county so your child can still receive the vaccination. Children can still be given this vaccination with a minor illness i.e. a cold without a fever. However if they have heavy nasal congestion this may prevent proper absorption and so therefore the vaccine will not be given. The nurse will assess each child’s physical health on the day of the vaccinations.
How does the nasal spray work? The nasal flu vaccine is a live vaccine. It contains viruses that have been weakened, which means the vaccination cannot cause the flu but it will help your child to build up an immunity so when they come into contact with flu viruses they will be less likely to get ill. It is important that your child has the vaccination yearly as flu viruses change over time so the vaccine is made to reflect this each year. The flu virus enters the body through the nose and mouth. Fluenz Tetra is given through the nose and is absorbed quickly through the nasal mucosa; it mimics the flu virus and results in a better immune response. It has been proven to be the most effective way of protecting children from the flu virus.
Does the vaccine have any sideeffects? The Fluenz Tetra vaccine is safe and has been used for several years in the UK and other countries. There are minimal sideeffects but the most common ones include runny or stuffy nose, headache, and reduced appetite, occasionally some children may develop a mild fever. These side-effects generally resolve in 3-5 days.
How can you prepare your child to receive their vaccination? Talk to your child about what to expect. You will find a helpful video online at www. sharegoodtimesnotflu.co.uk and you might like to act out together what you see on the video. Encourage your child to have a positive attitude towards vaccinations as this will help them to continue to choose to take up these very protective opportunities throughout life.
Further information If you would like further information regarding the flu nasal vaccination you can contact your school nursing team on the Admin Hub number 0300 1111 022 option 4 followed by option 1. You can also visit www.nhs.uk/child-flu and www.sharegoodtimesnotflu.co.uk websites for more information. To advertise call 0845 6439687 or e-mail info@timefortots.co.uk

Business Mum: Julia Northover
Independent Scentsy Director Name: Julia Northover Family: 5 children, aged between 17 and 32 Business Name: Independent Scentsy Director What does your work involve:
When I first joined scentsy I had no sales experience at all, but the beauty of scentsy is you don’t need to be a sales person. The handcrafted warmers and wax melts sell themselves. Once people can smell the fragrances and see the products they want them. I do a variety of different parties: Home parties where guests invite their friends and family to come round and have a get together sharing the fragrances and products. Coffee mornings and open houses. Basket parties where customers take a basket of scentsy goodies and show it to their family, friends and work colleagues and collect the orders. Online parties, so people can shop from the comfort of their sofa and I also do one to one sessions, where I meet up with people and show them the products. I am actively recruiting at the moment anyone who would like to have a hobby or start their own business. I have a wonderful team of 40 scentsy consultants who all have their own style of sharing scentsy with their customers. The support Scentsy offers is amazing, you have access to online trainings, a free personal website and 100% support from me if you decide to join my team.
How long have you been doing this?
3 years. I was a high level teaching assistant before.
Why did you decide to start this?
I wanted something that was just for me, something I could focus on for myself.
What do you like about it?
Working for myself means I can set my own work hours around school drop offs and dance classes as well as looking after my grandchildren. I am meeting new people and making new friends, as
well as having an extra income for holidays and paying for kids school trips etc!
How well does it fit in with family life?
It fits perfectly around my family life. Scentsy is the business you do while you are going about your everyday business. It’s perfect to do at home or you can share the products in your office or at the gym, I can drop off deliveries on the school runs and when taking my grandchildren to their swimming lessons.
Is there anything you would change?
The only regret I have is that I didn’t start up sooner, the potential in this business is huge.
What advice would you give to other Mums thinking of starting a business?
Go for it! Ask yourself what is the worst thing that can happen? In my circumstance if my business didn’t take off I would be left with a beautifully fragranced home! You will never know until you try and you could create the life you have always dreamed of for you and your family. If you would like anymore information about how scentsy please contact me, I would love to hear from you.

Childcare
Top Tips for Choosing Childcare: 1. Consider your child’s age and needs. Younger children need closer attention. Some children flourish in small groups, others in larger groups. 2. Consider what hours you need childcare. Some providers offer cover early morning and later in the evening. Some providers are school term time only. 3. Look around the facilities. Are they clean and safe? 4. Ask about the activities the provider offers. Do they offer a range? Will your child be stimulated? 5. Look at the menu available. Will they cater for special requirements? 6. Ask for references and speak to other parents. Consider combining childcare if it would benefit you and/or your child 7. Don’t leave it to the last minute to book your childcare. Some providers have waiting lists. 8. Take your child with you when you look around and watch their reaction. With older children you can usually tell if they’re comfortable somewhere or not. 9. Research all your options well. Don’t be afraid to ask questions.

Bugs Be Gone - Winter Tips By Leah Salmon from The Naturally You Clinic It’s that time of year again when bugs are in the air and being passed around our children at lightening speed. One child comes to school with the sniffles and the next day, 10 other children have it too. Don’t let your little ones suffer from the constant stream of coughs and colds that do the rounds each year. Succumbing to one or two between November and March isn’t the worst thing in the world, but when parents tell me their child or children are laid up every 4 weeks with another bug, it’s time to make some simple additions and changes to boost their natural defences so they can enjoy this time of year. Let’s face it, it can also be quite draining to nurse a sick child (or three) every few weeks, so this will also reduce our stress levels during this time, and stress depresses our immunity too, so it’s a winwin all round.
1. Water Water Water
During the colder months when our natural thirst isn’t triggered from the heat, we can easily forget to drink through most of the day. When we do drink it’s often sweet or warm sweet drinks just a few times a day. Water is just as essential during the winter as it is in the summer. In the process of defending our body against illness and disease, water helps lubricate the lining of our respiratory tract with mucus flush out toxins and invaders before they do any damage. So make sure you and your little ones are drinking at the very least 1 litre of pure water daily.
2. Probiotics
Did you know that 80% of your immune system is in your gut? So making sure you have enough of the good bacteria in there, to keep the ‘bad’ bacteria at bay, is an important part of boosting your immunity. So as well as helping our bodies digest foods and helping reduce symptoms of allergies, taking a probiotic daily can help reduce our families chances of catching and developing winter bugs.
3. Vitamin C
Another way to boost your immunity is to stay well topped up in the nutrient that helps support our immune system like no other, good old vitamin C.
You can buy the powder and for children 5 years and over, put about ¼ tsp or 500mg in your child’s juice or water mixed with 1tsp of honey before school or in the morning’s each day. Children between 2 to 5 years can take half this amount. Parents, you can safely take 1g or ½ tsp a day to stay protected during this time also.
4. Herbs & Oils
Echinacea herbal tea, available in many health food store and even supermarkets, has been shown to help prevent us from developing a cold and also reduce the length of a cold. You can also buy pure Tea Tree essential oil and add 10-15 drops to your child’s bath or up to 30 to your bath or mix a few drops into your liquid soap or shower gel. This powerful essential oil is antibacterial, antimicrobial and antiviral, which makes it a great cold & flue fighter. Once you’ve caught a cold bug, you can use Tea Tree in a cold air diffuser or dropped into a bowl of warm water you lean over and breathe deeply, to reduce your symptoms.
5. Hats & Ears
Many cold and flu virus get into our bodies though our ear canal, so keeping them covered with earmuffs and hats is a wise move. If you or your children do get sick, it’s also important to keep your ears covered during the illness and for a week or so after recovery too, as you can be very susceptible to germs just after getting sick, so to prevent a re-occurrence, continue to keep your ears covered.
Have a wonder-filled winter, take care and stay healthy.

Time for Mum
Health & Beauty Blog By Lu Buckley
Director QL. Award Winning Salon Wellingborough I am a proud mum of 3 children having my first son at 18 years (legitimately I might add!) and my second at 22. After my second child I went from a size 10 to a size 20! At work everyone just wanted to bear gifts and feed the ever-growing bump, and so did I. It was lush! Cakes, crisps, pizza...I could go on. But once I’d had my second son, I was left feeling big and empty, like a garage without the car in it. I had jeans upon jeans that did not fit. I was lucky in that I’m 5’ 9” in height so it did spread more evenly but I really needed to shift the excess pounds. Change had to happen...I had an epiphany... It took me 18 agonising months to get where I wanted to be. I quit all snacks and stuck to 3 meals a day and 2 litres of water. I did not calorie count but had porridge for breakfast, salad for lunch and vegetable or chicken wraps for my evening meal every day. No red meat and all skinless and grilled chicken. Repetitive I know but it worked.
After a couple of months the pounds depleted but, I had a saggy belly and swinging boobs... can you relate to this? I contemplated making a scarf. Ha! I eventually decided to employ a personal trainer for an outlay of £25 a week. It was the best decision ever. We started off at 5 days a week and then, after 2 months, reduced to one day per week. It was very much a teacher-student scenario - I was challenged and at times yelled at - but suddenly I had buttocks, boobs and a cute figure back. My trainer introduced me to kettle bell training which I continued at home and it has actually helped me keep the weight off, whilst eating in moderation. Can you relate to my story? Do you want to shed those baby pounds? If you are committed you can do it, as I and many others have done. But do not go for a crash diet because you will put it back on. It is all about having good energy and a positive perspective. I went from a size 20 back to a 10 in 18 months and in good health. You can do it too. I hope you have enjoyed my blog, next month: alopecia.

The Underwear Rule
Teach your child the Underwear Rule and help protect them from abuse
The Underwear Rule is a simple way that parents can help keep children safe from abuse - without using scary words or mentioning sex. The NSPCC has developed this simple guide for parents, (and a child-friendly version available online), to help you talk PANTS with your child. PANTS is an easy way for you to explain to your child the key elements of the Underwear Rule:
Privates are private
Be clear with your child that the parts of their body covered by underwear are private. Explain to your child that no one should ask to see or touch their private parts or ask them to look at or touch anyone else’s. Sometimes doctors, nurses or family members might have to. Explain that this is OK, but that those people should always explain why, and ask your child if it’s OK first.
Always remember your body belongs to you
Let your child know their body belongs to them, and no one else. No-one has the right to make them do anything that makes them feel uncomfortable. And if anyone tries, tell your child they have the right to say no. Remind your child that they can always talk to you about anything that worries or upsets them.
No means no
Make sure your child understands that they have the right to say “no” to unwanted touch - even to a family member or someone they know or love. This shows that they’re in control of their body and their feelings should be respected. If a child feels confident to say no to their own family, they are more likely to say no to others.
Talk about secrets that upset you
Explain the differences between ‘good’ and ‘bad’ secrets. Phrases like “it’s our little secret” are an abuser’s way of making a child feel worried, or scared to tell someone what is happening to them. Good secrets can be things like surprise parties or presents for other people. Bad secrets make you feel sad, worried or frightened. Your child needs to feel able to speak up about secrets that worry them and confident that saying something won’t get them into trouble. Telling a secret will never hurt or worry anybody in your family or someone you know and love.
Speak up, someone can help
Tell your child that if they ever feel sad, anxious or frightened they should talk to an adult they trust. This doesn’t have to be a family member. It can also be a teacher or a friend’s parent - or even ChildLine Remind them that whatever the problem, it’s not their fault and they will never get into trouble for speaking up.
