Spring 2019

M

othering Sunday is nearly upon us. A day when we celebrate mothers up and down the country and give thanks for everything they do. It’s often not until you become a mother yourself that you fully appreciate everything your mother has done for you. Being a mother is not always easy, no matter how old the children are, and for many the first realisation of this comes in the first few weeks of their child’s life. Many mothers, and fathers, are affected by postnatal depression (PND) which can be very debilitating. Gabby Matthews, local Birth and Postnatal Practitioner, has written an article for us on the signs to look out for with PND and where you can go to for help. It’s important to remember you are not alone and there is plenty of help and support out there if you are struggling - be it with PND or later in your child’s life. Do not be afraid to seek help. Ultimately we all do our best as mothers and we all deserve to be celebrated on the 31st March! So let’s enjoy our special day and remind each other how well we’re doing! We’ve teamed up with Rushton Hall to offer one local mother, and her friend or partner, a relaxing spa session at The Stableyard Spa. Turn to page 52 for details on how to nominate someone. Happy Mother’s Day for the 31st! Until the summer,

Vanessa

As we navigate our way through the minefield that is parenting decisions, childcare is one of the biggest we all make. From a return to work, wanting our child to socialise more or moving to a new area, whatever the reason for looking for a childminder, nursery or pre-school, our overriding desire as parents is that our children are safe, happy and stimulated. For parents able to manage the shorter hours of a pre-school day, Aldwincle Pre-School is an attractive proposition. Here’s why we believe it’s the perfect foundation for all children from 2 years old as an early years setting. High staff/child ratios At Aldwincle, there’s the time to truly nurture the educational, personal, social and developmental needs of every child as they learn and play. There is no one size fits all rule and the experienced team ensure that every child gains the most from their time there. Indoor and outdoor play areas Using children’s natural, spontaneous curiosities and interests at the starting point, the team let the environment play its part in deepening and lengthening concentration. The doors are flung open to the garden and children can choose where they play; indoor or out, it’s successfully used as a tool to support the learning programmes. Sharing in one another Spend any time at Aldwincle and you witness first-hand the charming friendships that are blossoming and the sense of camaraderie that exists. There’s also a strong ethos of sharing and celebrating one another’s successes and parents are encouraged to share news from home too.

Supporting each other Alison and her team are committed to supporting parents and sharing in the responsibility of each child’s development. Her door is always open and any information shared will be treated confidentially and sympathetically. Laying foundations for the future Alison also works closely with Mr Dainty, the Headmaster at Trinity CE Primary School, to ensure that the early years provision is aligned between the settings. Visits are also made into Reception during the summer term to hopefully make the transition up to ‘big school’ as stress-free as possible. Their promise to you To provide your child with a safe, fun, caring and stimulating learning environment that feeds their curiosity, supports their development and prepares them for the step up to primary school. Whilst words are easy to say, Aldwincle Pre-School genuinely lives and breathes its promises. The number of younger siblings that follow on, parental endorsements freely offered and children that attend from Thrapston and the surrounding villages including Islip, Lowick and Sudborough are all testament to the excellent level of service but more importantly care provided.

So if you currently find yourself in the position of exploring your options, Aldwincle Pre-School, with the familiar presence of Trinity just next door, could indeed be the perfect foundation you are looking for.

The Joy of Animals

by Northampton High School

A

ll children love animals; it is a wonderful natural draw that brings little ones and animals together. Some children may prefer bouncing dogs, others may like a gentle guinea pig and some may just enjoy watching the butterflies in the summer. Whichever your child’s preference, everyone will agree that animals can have a multitude of positive effects on children and adults alike. A study carried out by Cambridge University demonstrated that owning a pet can improve the pet owner’s overall health in as little as a month(1). As well as the physical improvements, such as getting more active, having less headaches and improving illness, there are the social and emotional benefits as well. Animals can help to promote responsibility, establish routine and lower stress levels in those around them. Encouraging your child to enjoy and appreciate animals at all levels therefore is so important and starts from the very beginning, at home. Bringing animal life into your home or garden will spark excitement in your child and open up a huge range of learning opportunities for them as well. It will encourage their curiosity, highlight their empathy for others, give them a new level of responsibility and challenge their problem solving skills. How can I keep an animal healthy? How can I keep them safe? How can I entertain them? It will also, inevitably, help them to learn about the cycle of life. Whew. With so many benefits we should get going today! At Northampton High School we certainly agree that animals are worth their weight in gold. We have recently welcomed an Australian Miniature Labradoodle named Betty into our school. Welcoming Betty into our school family has had a marvellous impact on students already; we have particularly noted the fantastic positive emotional impact on our girls. Girls who were worried or anxious have felt so much better after spending some time with Betty. It was also wonderful to see that Betty has helped some girls to face their fears. Whilst no one has to be near Betty if they do not wish to be, we were pleased to see some girls who were nervous of dogs also fall in love with Betty.

Welcome animals at home Not everyone is able to have a pet at home, but this shouldn’t stop us from enjoying animals with our children. Can we help animals in the wild? What might animals in the garden or park need? Why is it important to help animals? Let’s start by making bird feeders. 1. Take an apple and remove the middle using an apple corer. This is a great exercise in safe cutting techniques and being responsible with sharp objects too. 2. Take a piece of string or wool and thread it through the middle of the apple. 3. For an extra twist try hunting for some good twigs and tying them with your string as well, above the apple. This will help to attract the birds and give them some extra perches. 4. Hang your apple and twig feeder from a tree in your garden or in the park. Sit quietly, a little way away and watch your bird feeder; see if you can spot any birds who may like to eat from it. Talk to your child about why it’s kind to help animals and other people. Be quiet and listen to the sounds of nature. Maybe even enjoy an apple yourselves too! Sources 1: Hope for pets. Clubs & Classes

Featured Class: Tots & Tiddlers What is Tots & Tiddlers? A pre-school gymnastics and movement class at Lodge Park Sports Centre in Corby. Our sessions start at 10am and run right through to 2.30pm every Thursday in school term time. We have 4 different sessions for different ages and stages:

The four sessions: 10am-10.45am (babies/crawling) Parents/guardians are required to stay in the room and assist their child 11am-11.45am (toddlers) Parents/guardians are required to stay in the room and assist their child 12-12.45pm (independent beginners) Parents/guardians can spectate in our viewing gallery. 1-1.45pm & 1.45-2.30pm (pre-school) Parents/guardians can spectate in our viewing gallery.

The format of the classes: Our friendly staff will welcome you and your child into our sessions and talk you through the layout of the day. The first 2 sessions of the day are “free play” where the children get to explore and climb on our soft play equipment, they then have the chance to make some noise with our musical instruments, and awaken their senses by playing with feathers and bubbles. Nearer the end of the session the children take a star turn on our equipment when they will receive a sticker when the challenge is completed, finally finishing off with songs and parachute games. Our sessions vary each week. The 12pm onwards sessions for older children are “staff led” so the children start to learn basic skills such as the correct way to climb up and down using co-ordination and balance they have learnt from our sessions. Staff build your child’s confidence and strength over the sessions so in time they are able to complete the apparatus un-aided. Children work in small groups and learn to take turns.

How do Tots & Tiddlers classes benefit children? Our sessions improve the children’s social skills, coordination, balance and strength. Our sessions increase the children’s confidence and other motor skills they can then use in everyday situations.

When and where do you run classes? Every Thursday in school term time at Lodge Park Sports Centre, Shetland Way Corby NN17 2SG in our Practice Hall.

How long does each class last? Each session lasts for 45minute.

How much does a class cost? The cost is £4 per child per session.

How can I tell if I have postnatal depression?

By Gabby Matthews, Postnatal Practitioner

W

hen talking to a group of new mothers or discussing experiences of becoming new parents, it is not unusual to hear several members of a group say they are concerned about themselves or their partners, experiencing symptoms of postnatal depression. By exploring feelings and emotions it is often possible to put these concerns down to being extremely tired, overwhelmed by the responsibilities being a new parent or understanding the feelings of anxiety often experienced in the early days of caring for a new baby.

Feelings How are you feeling following the birth of your baby? It is usual for new parents to feel tired, lack energy and feel consumed by the care and attention their baby needs. New mothers often experience the ‘baby blues’ which can appear 3-4 days following birth and can remain for a couple of weeks bringing feelings of low mood, bouts of sadness and crying. New fathers can feel isolated and concerned for their baby’s health and well-being. These early parenting days can bring tension to relationships but are usually short lived.

Symptoms You may have postnatal depression if: • you feel tearful, lethargic and have problems concentrating • you or your partner find you are having trouble sleeping and are isolating yourself from friends and family • you worry that you are struggling to bond with your baby or you find you have no interest or enjoyment in your daily life • have a low sex drive and a low self esteem • you feel angry or find yourself overeating • you have suicidal or self-harm thoughts If you can relate to any of these then perhaps it is time to consider your own health and well-being and seek professional help.

Post-partum Psychosis For some new mothers feelings of depression and anxiety can be more extreme. If the person you are concerned about appears deluded or are discussing strange thoughts, perhaps hearing voices, they are

43 hallucinating, talking in an excited or agitated manner, behaving out of character or have feelings of harming themselves or their baby emergency care should be sought immediately by calling 999. They may need to be admitted to hospital or a mother and baby unit.

Postnatal depression and Paternal Postnatal depression (PNd) In 2014, figures from the UK Medical Research Council and University College London claimed the first 12 months following the birth of a baby was the period new parents were most at risk of a diagnosis of postnatal depression (39% of new mothers) and paternal postnatal depression (21% of new fathers). Interestingly, and also worryingly, paternal PND rose in cases where the mother was diagnosed with PND. The good news is that PND is an illness, it can be treated and it will improve over time. It is a condition that develops slowly and is not immediately evident bringing feelings of distress, fear and loneliness. Asking for help is the first step towards being supported, for many people this brings positive feelings of starting to be in ‘control’ of the situation. If you feel you, or anyone you know, may be suffering from postnatal or paternal postnatal depression reach out and ask for help. Speak to your Health Visitor, GP or other healthcare professionals about how you feel, they will arrange for you to receive help and ongoing support.

Treatments and Support • Your GP can refer you for a course of therapy such • • • •

a cognitive behavioural therapy Antidepressants – these may be prescribed by your GP, it is possible to be prescribed antidepressants and continue to breastfeed your baby Self help – 10 minutes a day of fresh air, or periods of exercise can make a huge difference to your health and feelings of well-being. Sleep and a balanced diet are equally important. Talk to friends and family about how you feel and the help you may need to enable you to care for yourself and your baby Try to spend time with other new parents. This can help you to evaluate your feelings and understand you are not alone in feeling overwhelmed.

Top Tips for Choosing Childcare: 1. Consider your child’s age and needs. Younger children need closer attention. Some children flourish in small groups, others in larger groups. 2. Consider what hours you need childcare. Some providers offer cover early morning and later in the evening. Some providers are school term time only. 3. Look around the facilities. Are they clean and safe? 4. Ask about the activities the provider offers. Do they offer a range? Will your child be stimulated? 5. Look at the menu available. Will they cater for special requirements? 6. Ask for references and speak to other parents. Consider combining childcare if it would benefit you and/or your child 7. Don’t leave it to the last minute to book your childcare. Some providers have waiting lists. 8. Take your child with you when you look around and watch their reaction. With older children you can usually tell if they’re comfortable somewhere or not. 9. Research all your options well. Don’t be afraid to ask questions.

Mothering Sunday 5 Facts About Mother’s day That may surprise you!

1. it has a religious origin

The origin of Mothering Sunday dates back to the 16th century when children working away from home used to visit their ‘mother church’ and families on the 4th Sunday of lent, known as Laetare Sunday. It wasn’t until the 20th century though when the daughter of a vicar, Constance Smith, started a move to have an official day dedicated to mothers. She was inspired by a lady in America, Anna Jarvis, who was trying to do the same thing over there. Laetare Sunday seemed the obvious date to choose as children traditionally visited their mother’s on that day anyway.

2. it is on a different date each year because it is linked to lent Because of it’s religious origin Mothering Sunday in the UK always falls on the fourth Sunday in Lent, exactly three weeks before Easter Day.

3. it is celebrated on different dates around the world In many countries Mother’s Day does not have a religious origin and so is not necessarily celebrated on the 4th Sunday of lent. In the USA for example it is celebrated on the second Sunday in May and is a day for celebrating and honouring mothers with no link to the church.

4. it’s original name is Mothering Sunday Influenced by the USA it is becoming more widely known as ‘Mother’s Day’ in the UK these days, and celebrated in the same way as the US, but with it’s religious origin it was always known as Mothering Sunday traditionally.

5. it has many different names

They’re not widely used but Mothering Sunday (Laetare Sunday - the 4th Sunday in lent) is also known as Refreshment Sunday, Rose Sunday, Pudding-Pie Sunday, Simnel Sunday and the Sunday of the Five Loaves.

Could you be a Foster Carer?

Frequently Asked Questions about Fostering

What is it like to be a Foster Carer?

One of our valued Carers shares her views; “The reward of fostering is seeing the children you care for blossom. I have had the privilege of seeing children in my care obtain trophies, awards for competitions and for them to have the opportunity to use their talent and skills to contribute to community events. They have passed school and college exams as well as a driving test. The change in their self-image and confidence has been wonderful to behold. I feel honoured to be a Foster Carer and I feel better that a child refugee’s birth mother knows that her son is alive and well and that he is being cared for. I have seen that words of encouragement, consistency and working with the child makes a difference with time.” When you Foster, you invest in that child’s life. You have the opportunity to make a difference that will be lifelong.

a policy in place for Foster Carers, many places offer leave similar to maternity/paternity or parental leave.

i’ve never worked with children before, does that matter?

That’s not a problem, you don’t need any qualifications or experience. We offer a great training package which will help you gain confidence in your own abilities and develop new skills.

i’ve got criminal convictions, does that automatically rule me out?

Not necessarily. Criminal convictions in the past may not affect your application – though you should be honest about them from the start. Convictions against children do automatically disqualify anyone from fostering.

do i need to own my own property to Foster? No, you can own your home or rent a home anywhere in Northamptonshire.

i’m a single parent, can i Foster?

Of course you can. Part of the assessment will explore your support network, in the same way you already have one for your own child. It’s important to remember your relationship status is not a barrier, you may be single, married or divorced, living together or in a same sex couple.

i already have children, do i need to wait until they are older? It doesn’t matter whether or not you have your own children or if they are still living at home.

i’m working, can i continue if i want to Foster?

You can be working, unemployed or retired. Your Social Worker can talk to you about training and other times you may need to be available. Also, it is worth checking with your employer if they have

Win a Family Ticket to see “Zog” at The Royal & derngate on Friday 21st June at 4.30pm

Large in size, and keen in nature, Zog is so eager to win a golden star at Madam Dragon’s school, where dragons learn all the things that dragons need to know. Zog tries so very hard, perhaps too hard, and he bumps, burns and roars his way through years one, two and three. Luckily, the plucky Princess Pearl patches him up ready to face his biggest challenge yet…a duel with knight, Sir Gadabout the Great! Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s much-loved Zog comes to life in Mike Shepherd’s magical adaptation with Johnny Flynn’s sumptuous folk score featuring live musicians. Katie Sykes’ design lifts the book from the page and creates a real and fantastical world. From the team behind Tiddler and Other Terrific Tales, Zog promises to be roaring fun for all ages.

To be in with a chance of winning, tell us which of the following is NOT a book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler: a/ Room on the Broom
