Play Time is the Best Time
C
Article by Northampton High School
hildren need play as much as they need formal learning in lessons – and not just in the Early Years. They need play throughout childhood. In the competitive, social media driven world that we currently live in, it is easy as parents to feel the pressure to push a child to sit still and learn more and more. To be the best, to not fall behind, to be top of the class (or even top of the toddler friendship group). But what we must not forget is that play, supported by encouraging adults, can greatly enhance the learning experiences of children. By playing with our children we facilitate their physical, emotional, social and cognitive development. Studies have shown that play can increase memory, stimulate brain growth, increase attention and improve language skills as well as teach children to self regulate emotions, to control impulses and to practice how to cope with challenges they will face as an adult. The act of playing throughout childhood can be varied and inspiring and so should their play times. To help your child become an expert at play, use all resources open to them to exercise their mind, body and imagination to the full. What about playing bat-and-ball, frisbee, chalk writing, cheerleading, three legged racing, role play, tag, mud pie making, kite creating‌. The list is endless and most activities are completely free. Let your child get dirty and give them free reign, show them your complete attention and take joy in hearing about their activity. Do remember to actively help your child to take notice of what they are doing. Listening to their descriptions of what is happening will give you vital clues about how their view of the world is developing and how you can then help them build on their understanding with new vocabulary or knowledge. There are some seasonal activities which would be great fun to head outside and do. Tree bark rubbing, leaf artwork, creating a bird feeder, having a bonfire. Get the neurons firing whilst also having lots of fun and be safe in the knowledge that your child is benefiting greatly from all that they do. www.northamptonhigh.co.uk

CBeebies, Theatre and Panto...
An interview with CBeebies’ Sid Sloane
C
Beebies’ legend Sid Sloane is starring in the Royal and Derngate’s pantomime, ‘Cinderella’, this Christmas and I was fortunate enough to catch up with him at a recent press launch for the show. I took 2 lucky readers along with me, winners of our Facebook competition, who were photographed with Sid for our front cover. Edward, age 3, and Bella, age 2, are both big CBeebies fans but like many children, came over rather shy when it came to the meet and greet! Sid was a complete pro though, and every bit as lovely as he appears on the television, and soon put both Edward and Bella at ease so we could take some photos. After a chat and a few high fives, Edward and Bella went off happily clutching their signed photographs, and I sat down for a chat with Sid myself…
So you’ve been working in children’s theatre and television for over 20 years, is that right? Yes roughly speaking, man and boy! And it was a career change for you? Yes it was. I changed jobs a few times but the last job I had, before I trained to be an actor, was as a broker for a computer company buying and selling hardware. Did you always want to go into children’s television? No. I definitely didn’t leave with the intention of going into children’s television. Not that I didn’t like it, it just never crossed my mind at the time I went to Drama School. I left the sales job and decided to train to be an actor. I approached it with a salesman’s mentality but actually had no idea about the industry I was getting into. I went to my first term at drama school and our teacher came in and emptied a sack full of applications on the table. He said they’d posted a job for a not-for-profit theatre show and this was the number of applications they’d had! He told us that 95% of the industry we were wanting to get into at any given time didn’t have work. That was the jaw dropping moment…. Your heart sank? No it didn’t actually. The salesman in me asked ‘how do I get into the 5% then’. That was my attitude. I’m going for the 5%. When I left drama school I produced my own show as the next move on. I knew I’d be told ‘when you’re in something let us know’ so I was able to produce the flyer for my show and say (to prospective employers) ‘here you go. Come and see me’ which they did. So I just prepared myself basically and got myself an agent and haven’t stopped working since. So how did you get the gig at CBeebies? So I got a part in a Roald Dahl production of The Twits which toured around the UK. I never read reviews but while I was doing a show in Edinburgh, one of the fellow actors said to me ‘you’ve got to read this review’, I said ‘no, no I don’t read reviews’ and he said ‘you really must read this one’ so I said alright and had a quick

11 look and it was talking about my performance and how I engaged with the audience. At the end it said ‘BBC Children’s television beckons!’. At the time I just thought ‘ok whatever’ but about a year later I had an audition at the Beeb! When I left drama school I thought ‘I’m going to make Hollywood films for 6 million then spend the rest of my life doing theatre’ because I love doing live, all I wanted to do was perform on stage but it didn’t pay much money so I thought, ok, I need to find a way of earning the money so I can do what I love. So that was my plan. And I just got snapped up by the Beeb. So you’ve been with CBeebies since the beginning? Yes I helped launch the channel with 3 other presenters. CBBC and CBeebies all launched at the same time. It was a re-fashioning of children’s television for the BBC. At the time my son was 3... so I knew of the sort of programmes they were talking about when I had the audition so I just pretended I was talking to my son, which really helped as I had no idea who I was as a presenter. It had never crossed my mind. CBeebies was brilliant when my children were little and quite educational. Yes absolutely. They branded it really well. ‘Edutainment’ was the phrase we used – very educational and very entertaining. So you don’t present anymore but you still star in ‘Let’s Play’? I stopped presenting for the main CBeebies channel, although I still present for CBeebies Africa, but ‘Let’s Play’ still runs everyday on the channel. How often do you have to film for that? We’ve stopped filming for that as well. They just repeat the series. What was the best thing about working on CBeebies? If I answer for everybody else they’d probably say the cake, but I don’t eat cake, I used to but not anymore. I love working on there because it’s like a family and it’s not like going to work. It is really hard work, the studio day is a long day. Was it a Monday to Friday job? Yes absolutely. Although I was working 4 days a week at CBeebies because I still wanted to
go off and do acting. As the channel became more and more popular, and started smashing records for children’s television, I became very well known as being a CBeebies presenter. I’d get a call for a job offer, a part in Casualty for example, but I often couldn’t commit because they couldn’t tell me the exact dates and I’d had to book my days with CBeebies in advance. So I did miss some opportunities like that but I was still doing lots of theatre so I was happy. I was doing local shows with a very good professional theatre company. Were they always children’s shows? No I was doing grown up stuff too but mainly family oriented. You have your own theatre company don’t you? Yes I have my own theatre company and run my own shows, Roots4Kids theatre. I do live shows all the time and have done some co-productions - I’m always open and available to do that - but I’m much more interested in working with children directly. You’re clearly a natural at it. You were brilliant with our competition winners today. I thought ‘oh no they’re not going to smile’ but they did! Give them a few minutes. They can’t resist the Sid charm! I genuinely love working with kids and when I do my shows the meet and greet is the best thing. You have to give kids time. When you give kids

12 time they give you magic. So for me it’s working directly with them. Looking in their eyes and seeing the joy. I have a health and wellbeing programme that I run as a breakfast club for kids and that’s more the things I’d like to pursue. I have inspirational workshops and talks that I do which is all part of Roots4Kids now. I go round to schools and do motivational talks at events and shows too. I’m a mixture of different things now. Sid is definitely a profile which I’ve gained from being on CBeebies. Yes you weren’t born Sid Sloane were you? No! I’m Gary Gibson! My Mum was very upset with me changing, I have to tell you. So where did Sid come from? I made it up! Basically at the time I asked myself who I wanted to be as an actor, I was back in actor mode then and wanting to make it big, and I asked myself who has dignity and respect as a performer - Sidney Poitier! Obviously I couldn’t be Sidney Poitier, he’s taken, so I tried doing an anagram of his surname. But it didn’t quite work so I started thinking what’s been lucky for me….Sloane Street! I worked at Laura Ashley on Sloane Street when I was a very young lad and had a really great time working with all the Sloane Rangers as they were known then. I also used to hang out on the King’s Road and Sloane Square is at one end….Sloane street has always just been really lucky for me so I thought Sid Sloane! That has quite a nice ring to it. So that’s how I got my name. You’re still Gary to family and friends? Yes I’m still Gary to family and friends and my partner. Although I have some brilliant friends who I’ve met since who call me Sid. I had a girlfriend once who called me Sid. When we met I was out with the cast of a show one night and it was just easier to say my name’s Sid. It’s like having a nickname. On our second date I said actually my names Gary, you should call me Gary and she said ‘no I can’t! No I met you as Sid, I’ve got to call you Sid now’. Colleagues all call me Sid. It doesn’t matter to me. I’m the same person. Panto then, I’m guessing you’ve done quite a few? Oh yes I have! Have you starred in Cinderella before? Yes indeed. I have to say it’s my favourite. I did an interview once talking about why pantos need to be different, the stories. And Cinderella is one of those classic stories. I think parents should
talk to kids about the real meaning of panto, like Cinderella, it’s a great story but life isn’t like that. Going to panto is a really great opportunity to have those conversations. So I love doing panto but please don’t take it too seriously. In fact don’t take it seriously at all! It’s a brilliant way of introducing children to theatre. It’s a spectacle and panto is one of the most spectacular of shows to come and see so for kids it’s a great introduction to theatre. Do you get involved with the script at all? No! I’ll just turn up and say, right I’ll do that. Everyone who’s in the show, like me, gets their moment with the audience to make themselves familiar. So for me it will be the CBeebies audience I’ll need to make myself familiar with so I’ll need to do something CBeebies-ish. I tend to always add a little rap or a rhyme or something like that and that I write myself. I always turn up at rehearsals with my piece as it were. I like writing poems so it’s natural for me. Have you been to Northampton before? I was here 4 years ago in this very same place playing the very same character – Dandini in Cinderella! Are you looking forward to coming back to Northampton then? Yes I really genuinely am. I love the place. It’s an interesting town which has a good mix. It has its impoverished parts and less impoverished parts and I like to get involved with all of them. I grew up on a council estate in south London so there’s an element of me that likes to be in those places. I’ll go and get my haircut there and hopefully catch up with some people. Hopefully I’ll get chance to visit some schools and do a motivational talk or little workshop with pupils on health and wellbeing. I like to do things like that because you get to know the people and who they really are. Northampton is like a really perfect mix of all the other places I go to, the bigger cities, and it has that feel to it you know. It’s warming and friendly and people are always really nice.
Thanks Sid. We look forward to seeing you back in Northampton and starring in the Royal & Derngate’s Cinderella this Christmas. Cinderella is on from Friday 6th to Sunday 29th December. Tickets can be purchased online by visiting: www.royalandderngate.co.uk

Featured Class: Sing & Sign Sing and Sign was developed in January 2001 with the help of Speech and Language experts, and many thousands of parents have learned to sign with their babies through these fabulous classes. We already know that babies use gesture to communicate long before they begin to talk (they love to wave, point, clap and shake their heads), and Sing and Sign builds on that natural instinct to encourage our babies to use gestures, actions and signs that we all understand to enhance that early communication. Sing and Sign classes combine the benefits of music and baby signing using a combination of traditional and specially written songs that are fun for babies to learn. There are 3 different Sing and Sign classes available, each designed for a specific age range.
Sing and Sign Babes is for babies from around 6 weeks to around 6 months (or when they’re comfortable sitting up). In these classes, we focus on the building blocks of early communication, such as eye contact, anticipation, facial expression, and repetition. Sing and Sign Babes classes are relaxed and informal, with gentle content designed to support and encourage parents and babies to establish amazing communication skills.
Sing and Sign Stage 1 classes are designed for babies from around 6 to 16 months. We choose a new topic each week, and practice signs and songs in a fun and active way that is loved the by the babies. The topics and signs selected have been chosen as they are important in our baby’s world and really pique their interest. We’ll cover nappy changing, bath time, bedtime, visits to the farm and jungle, and over the course of a 10 week term, babies will be exposed to over 100 different signs. Sing and Sign Stage 2 classes build on
the content from Stage 1, and are best suited to babies who are beginning to toddle as we include a little more movement and activity (from around 14 months to 2 years). Our topics have moved on from basics of a baby’s world to encompass the extra detail that they are ready to add to their conversations, so we include colours, early counting skills, the weather and potty training, amongst others.
Our classes follow the same format each week, so the babies learn to recognise the pattern, and anticipate what comes next. This leads to so much excitement when Jessie Cat pops out for a game of Peek-a-boo, or the box of instruments appears. Each class lasts for 1 hour, and includes a short period of social time at the beginning or end of each session. There is a maximum class size of 12 babies for any Sing and Sign class. So when you book your place, you’ll see the same babies and parents each week. This is great for the social aspect as our babies aren’t overwhelmed by different faces each time, and some beautiful friendships have blossomed in the social time at the end of each class. It’s also a chance for parents and carers to swap tips and share experiences. Our goal is to encourage verbal communication, and we’re giving our babies and toddlers some great skills whilst working towards that goal. Having the ability use signs to express their feelings, wants and needs before they can talk can lift self-confidence and really help to reduce frustration for both baby and parent! There are classes running across Northamptonshire, with venues in Kettering (on Tuesdays), Aldwincle (on Wednesdays), Wellingborough (on Thursdays) and Rushden (on Fridays). Stage 1 and Stage 2 classes are run in blocks of 10 weeks to coincide with the school terms. Sing and Sign Babes classes are run in blocks of 5 weeks. All the classes require booking for the whole block.

Could you be a Foster Carer?
Frequently Asked Questions about Fostering
What is it like to be a Foster Carer?
One of our valued Carers shares her views; “The reward of fostering is seeing the children you care for blossom. I have had the privilege of seeing children in my care obtain trophies, awards for competitions and for them to have the opportunity to use their talent and skills to contribute to community events. They have passed school and college exams as well as a driving test. The change in their self-image and confidence has been wonderful to behold. I feel honoured to be a Foster Carer and I feel better that a child refugee’s birth mother knows that her son is alive and well and that he is being cared for. I have seen that words of encouragement, consistency and working with the child makes a difference with time.” When you Foster, you invest in that child’s life. You have the opportunity to make a difference that will be lifelong.
a policy in place for Foster Carers, many places offer leave similar to maternity/paternity or parental leave.
i’ve never worked with children before, does that matter?
That’s not a problem, you don’t need any qualifications or experience. We offer a great training package which will help you gain confidence in your own abilities and develop new skills.
i’ve got criminal convictions, does that automatically rule me out?
Not necessarily. Criminal convictions in the past may not affect your application – though you should be honest about them from the start. Convictions against children do automatically disqualify anyone from fostering.
Do i need to own my own property to Foster? No, you can own your home or rent a home anywhere in Northamptonshire.
i’m a single parent, can i Foster?
Of course you can. Part of the assessment will explore your support network, in the same way you already have one for your own child. It’s important to remember your relationship status is not a barrier, you may be single, married or divorced, living together or in a same sex couple.
i already have children, do i need to wait until they are older? It doesn’t matter whether or not you have your own children or if they are still living at home.
i’m working, can i continue if i want to Foster?
You can be working, unemployed or retired. Your Social Worker can talk to you about training and other times you may need to be available. Also, it is worth checking with your employer if they have
