Autumn 2017 Contents
A
s another summer draws to an end thoughts turn to the new term and for many the start of a new routine. The autumn can bring big changes for some, especially if you have a child starting nursery or school. My second child is starting secondary school this September which means big changes in our household. Many parents will be just starting to think about schools this autumn with applications for places in September 2018 opening soon. We have a few schools advertising their open evenings in this issue. My son has just finished at Brambleside School in Kettering who, by co-incidence, are advertising their open evening. For what it’s worth my son has been very happy at Brambleside and we have been extremely pleased with his progress there. If you live near the Brambleside area I highly recommend you take a look at the school. Wherever you live if you are considering primary schools this autumn then be sure to read our top tips from a local teacher on page 32 to help you choose the right school for your child. If you and your family are facing changes or big decisions in the coming months then we wish you the best of luck! Until the winter....

Tots News How’s that? Girls at
Spratton Hall Bowled Over with their
New Cricket Facilities
G
irls’ sport at Spratton Hall is changing shape from a bat held with one hand to a bat held with two hands. Women’s cricket is taking off throughout the world and with England winning the Women’s World Cup this summer at Lord’s what a perfect time for girls at Spratton Hall to move to cricket! Heather Knight, England skipper, hopes young girls are inspired by their victory. “There’s never been a better time to be a young girl in cricket” says Heather. Children at Spratton play team sports from Year 2 through to Year 8 and all pupils will learn cricket in the summer term from next summer. This season they have more than doubled the number of cricket nets and next season there will be new cricket pitches, giving Spratton a total of 10 outdoor nets (grass and all-weather) and 9 cricket pitches, so plenty of room for all. Exciting times ahead!

“My Family Holiday”
Local Dad raising money for charity with his new book
L
ocal Dad of 2, Gurvinder Patara, has just had his Family Holiday first children’s book published and all proceeds from purchases of the book are being donated to the Written by Gurvinder Patara charity “Beyond the Illustrated by Kris Lillyman Moon”. “My Family Holiday” tells the story of a happy young family planning and then embarking on their annual holiday. Wonderfully illustrated, the book is aimed at young children and is written in a rhyming style which is a proven technique to aid a young child’s reading development. The charity “Beyond the Moon” offers families with seriously ill children the chance to get away on their own family holiday to enjoy quality time together away from the stresses and strains of hospitals and treatments. To find out more about the charity visit: www.beyondthemoon.org. Please support this very worthwhile charity by purchasing this delightful book. It’s available on Amazon for just £5.99.
Grandparents Day! Sunday 1st October
D
id you know Sunday 1st October 2017 is National Grandparents Day in the UK? Although not as widely recognised as Mothering Sunday or Father’s Day, the UK has been celebrating National Grandparents Day since 1990 when it was introduced by the charity Age Concern. Since 2008 it has always been celebrated on the first Sunday in October. How will you treat your Grandparents this Grandparents Day?

Mini Meadows Farm M
ini Meadows children’s farm in the village of Welford first opened its doors to the public in 2012. Since then it has grown from a small farm with little more than a few chickens to a 12 acre site boasting a whole range of animals, an indoor and outdoor play area, sandpit, cafe and shop! On entry to the farm you can buy a food bucket (for only £2) with food for just about every animal on the farm! The bucket contains colour coded cups with different food in each and a key to tell you what to feed each animal. Children can wander freely around the farm meeting and feeding: rabbits, chickens, guinea pigs, goats, sheep, cows, alpacas, ponies, pigs and many others. The paddocks have been set up in such a way that every pen can be seen at every angle and children don’t have far to walk from one animal to the next. As well as the animals the farm has it’s own play areas including a large undercover sandpit with buckets and spades. A recent addition are the pedal tractors and track situated in the newly erected barn so available for use in all weather. Plans are afoot to expand the indoor play zone further so watch this space for more developments! The farm has it’s own classroom and welcomes schools and nurseries and other organisations for group visits where children can learn about the animals as well as meet and feed them. It’s also available for childrens parties on weekends. The cafe serves a good range of delicious hot and cold drinks and snacks (including home-made cakes!) or visitors are welcome to bring their own picnic with plenty of benches available at which to eat. Mini Meadows is a super little farm that children of all ages will enjoy but is particularly suitable for young children. At only £4 entry per person (children and adults) it’s also a great value day out. Annual membership is available for just £45 which gives unlimited entry for up to 5 people for the year. The farm is open 7 days a week from 10am to 5pm, 361 days a year. To find out more visit:

Bubble Babies Swim School For children from 2 months to 5 years Experienced, fun instructor
A dynamic family experience
A very warm welcome awaits you (not to mention the very warm water!) at Kingsley School Hydrotherapy Pool, Kettering on Saturday mornings. Bubble Babies Baby and Junior Swimming Classes encourage all members of the family to come along and soak up the vibrant atmosphere. Babies love having grandparents or auntie and uncle watch as they confidently show off their latest skills; there really is no better way to splash into the weekend! Bubble Babies have the pool exclusively to themselves so we are able to create a friendly environment totally revolving around the needs of the budding swimmers and their families. Come along and see!
Tropical conditions with water 34 degrees! Because the water is so warm, babies from as young as 2 months are comfortable and relaxed during the half hour lessons. This of course means that parents can relax and enjoy themselves too, focusing all their energies on carefully developing their child’s swimming capabilities. It’s not just the tiny ones that benefit from the ‘tropical-like’ conditions, however! Bubble Babies runs classes for children up to 5 years old and of course parents are always very happy to slip into what we lovingly call the Big Bath!
Not just mums: dads are welcome too!
As classes run on Saturday mornings, there is a dynamic collection of enthusiastic dads who enjoy this wonderful opportunity to bond with their children. A whole range of structured activities, races, games and different equipment each week offers them the chance to share in giving their baby the precious aquatic skills and confidence that lead to a lifelong love and enjoyment of the water.
Erika, the founder of Bubble Babies who has been teaching babies to swim for 14 years, looks forward each week to chasing her pupils with crocodiles (inflatable of course!), sending them down white water alley on the adventure to Treasure Island and getting them to swim through caves and waterfalls on their fronts and their backs! She believes strongly that if the principles of good swimming technique are firmly established and everyone is having fun then the learning follows on quite naturally. This is backed up enthusiastically by parents: Emily’s mum proudly writes, ‘Bubble Babies is absolutely fantastic! It’s such a fun way to build confidence and learn new skills in a nurturing and supportive environment. Erika is a brilliant teacher always making the sessions enjoyable with songs, games and activities. Out little girl has thrived taking part in these lessons, going from no swimming experience to swimming a whole length by herself. We highly recommend it’.
Swimming awards
To celebrate their achievements, the mini swimmers receive the Swimming Teacher’s Association Starfish Badges and Certificates with the older children working through the Stanley First Steps Series awards. For children with special needs, there is the Rockhopper series, ensuring that everyone is challenged in appropriate ways and has the opportunity to enjoy the self-affirming satisfaction of success.
Underwater Photo Shoot
In October we have another Underwater Photograph session at Kingsley School and this exciting event is open to anyone who would like to come along and is confident in going under the water. What better souvenir of those happy times and earliest swims?

Research local primary schools. Check their admission criteria- be realistic- don’t waste your 1st choice by putting down a school you are not eligible to apply for!
2. Look at a school’s website- think about your own child - their personality and interests - do you think the school would suit them? 3. Ignore gossip! Keep an open mind about a school until you have visited it. 4. Find out when a school’s open days are book yourself in early as popular times can get booked up. Try to choose a day when you can go without any children so have no distractions! 5. Read through the latest Ofsted report but check the date. Schools can change very quickly - especially when they have new staff. 6. Essential to visit your local catchment school - even if you do not think you will apply to that school. The development of the whole child is vital. Academic achievement comes to children who are happy and well-rounded. As children get older they like to invite friends home, this can be difficult if children live a long way away and can make it harder for them to join friendship groups. 7. Always talk positively about a school to your child. Do not ask them which school they would like to go to, that’s not fair. Remember they are only 3/4 years old. 8. Choose a school because you think it is right for your child, not because it is where their friends are going. Children soon make a new set of friends. 9. Do not miss the deadline for applications. Check the date on Northamptonshire County Council’s website and make sure you get your application in in plenty of time. 10. A child’s first teacher is the most importantremember you as a parent are, and always will be, your child’s best teacher.

Childcare
The Montessori Approach to Childcare Glendon Farm Montessori and Forest School
A child-led approach to education
Nature plays a vital role
Through respecting and challenging children’s own interests, the Montessori method aims to develop a life-long love of learning. We look at the bigger picture of what is needed to become a happy, healthy and capable adult. We are guided by the children as individuals, rather than a standardized curriculum.
Montessori said “There is no description, no image in any book that is capable of replacing the sight of real trees, and all the life to be found around them, in a real forest. Something emanates from those trees which speaks to the soul.” We fill our classroom with natural materials and ensure children have plenty of time to play outdoors in our ‘Forest School’ environment.
The Montessori environment is a very special place
The materials are cleverly designed so that children can be self-taught. For instance, babies play with sets of ten sequentially sized blocks that introduce the decimal system. In Literacy, the skills needed for reading and writing are broken down into fun activities. Children are never formally taught to write, but have been known to produce pages and pages of words with the joy and enthusiasm normally only associated with ‘play’. This is partly achieved by not putting pressure on them. We let children be children! We observe closely, and guide them to learn at a pace that is perfect for them as individuals.
The room is calm, ordered and neutral. There are ‘just enough’ activities to stimulate and challenge children without overwhelming them.
Independence is key Children are given lessons such as: dressing themselves, pouring their own drinks, using tools and clearing up from a very young age. Children come to take great pride in caring for themselves and their environment. “Help me to help myself” is a well known quote from Maria Montessori. Montessori was an Italian doctor and scientist who lived from 1870-1952. She studied child development and opened revolutionary schools all over the world.
Academic progress is easily achieved

Business Mum: Claire Fox from Funky Lil Feet Name: Claire Fox Family: 2 children (Will 15, Olivia 14) Describe your business:
Funky Lil Feet is a children’s clothing and shoe shop.
How long have you been doing this? 12 years.
What did you do before and why did you decide to make a change?
I used to work as an engineer and emergency planner for Anglian Water. I took voluntary redundancy after 17 years in the water industry to enable me to spend more time with the children. There are only 10 months between the two of them and they were both born prematurely. After a few months of being at home full time with the babies I felt the need to do something part time for a change of scenery! I started to help out Jane (Podiatrist) in her dream of owning a children’s shoe shop that concentrated on specialist fitted shoes that weren’t just plain and boring. There was a definite gap in the market for beautiful shoes (alongside school shoes) that are professionally fitted. Jane continued to run her podiatry clinic and as the business grew from strength to strength I ended up managing the shop before eventually taking over the business 3 years ago.
What do you like about it?
I love the freedom of working for myself and we have a great team of people so coming to work each day is always great fun and not a chore (something that I hope the customers feel also).
How well does it fit in with family life?
It works perfectly well as I live in Thrapston so my children have always been close by and been able to come into the store if they needed to. Indeed they have both worked part time over the busy
summer period putting away shoe boxes! The downside is I am always at my busiest when it is the School Holidays!
What advice would you give to other Mums thinking of starting a business?
I love it but there are downsides – you are never really away from work and when you employ staff there are additional pressures too. However I never dread coming into work and if I fancy a day off then I can (I just don’t get paid for it!). It is more of a passion than a job! Funky Lil Feet cover all width fittings with sizes from a teeny 1 to a teenage 10 (44). They specialise in fitting orthotics for children with special requirements too. Only 10 minutes from Kettering and 20 minutes from Northampton with free parking right outside. Funky Lil Feet look forward to welcoming you! Autumn and winter boots and shoes are now in stock.

Childhood Cancer: A Local Family’s Experience It’s a subject most parents don’t want to think about - their worst nightmare - but sadly childhood cancer is a reality and a nightmare that some families have to face. With September being childhood cancer awareness month we’re sharing with you a local family’s experience with the dreadful disease, in the Mum’s words, to highlight the early warning signs and possibly help save a young life....
eptember is childhood cancer awareness month. Buildings all over the world turn gold and celebrities wear gold ribbons to draw attention to this horrible disease. I’d read articles about it in the media but I never thought for 1 minute I’d be personally affected by it. How wrong was I... Sam was born in October 2012 after a very rapid delivery (almost on the A14 but not quite). He was a happy and contented baby and we all settled into busy family life. He was a very welcome addition to our family, his big brother Matthew was 5 at the time and he adored him. Sam met all of his developmental milestones. I returned to work as a travel agent part-time when my maternity leave finished. Life was hectic but very normal. In February 2015 when Sam had turned 2 we noticed that he had a turn in his right eye. We were referred to the specialists who confirmed he had a squint and poor eye sight so he started to wear glasses. A follow up in July 2015 showed it wasn’t getting any better so he wore patches on his eye for 12 hours a day. During the summer of 2015 Sam just didn’t seem to be quite right. He suffered from one infection after another. Mainly tonsillitis and ear infections, couple with discharge from his ears. Quite

S
common childhood infections so we thought we had no reason to be overly worried. He seemed a bit unsteady on his feet so we bought new shoes. While his peers were dropping their naps Sam wasn’t, but with his eyesight issues we expected that. One September morning Sam could not stand up and he’d been vomiting the night before. We’d taken him to the GP who was not happy to give us any more antibiotics as clearly they were not working. He thought Sam might have a urine infection. With all this in mind and Sam being unbalanced we took him to A&E. A CT scan showed a mass on his brain stem. We were blue lighted to the John Radcliffe hospital in Oxford where he underwent emergency surgery. A biopsy later confirmed he had a cancerous brain tumour, a nasty piece of work called an Anaplastic Astrocytoma. He had just celebrated his third birthday in October 2015. Sam underwent 12 hour brain surgery to remove as much of the tumour as possible. He spent 10 weeks in hospital recovering and we cannot thank the team at John Radcliffe enough for their care and dedication. Sam then had radiotherapy and chemotherapy which finished in February 2017. Thankfully after all his treatment his scans show that he has beaten this beast. But it’s a marathon not a sprint and we hope to be one of the lucky ones who survive and don’t relapse. We are now looking to the future and him starting reception year at Rothwell Victoria Infant School. Sadly though like many children who have had cancer he has been left with disabilities and for him his eyesight has been particularly affected. That said we are so very thankful that Sam is still with us and enjoying life like any 4 year old should. You can follow Sam’s journey on his Facebook page ‘Supporting Sam’. Looking back I wish I’d have known the signs, we just never thought in a million years this would happen to us.
Thank-you Sarah (Sam’s Mum) for sharing your story with us.

What Is A Present Worth? Help put a smile on a child’s face this Christmas
H
ow many presents will your children get for Christmas this year? How big a pile would it make if you could get together all the presents your children had received since they were born? Yet there are millions of children around the world who have never received a present, in fact, the very thought is so alien that when you first give them a gift they will smile, enjoy it and then hand it back as they cannot believe it is theirs to keep. Operation Christmas Child, the world’s largest Christmas Children’s appeal, run by the Christian charity Samaritan’s Purse, aims to help make sure that as many of those children as possible, at least once in their lifetime, get to know what it feels like to be given a joyous gift. It’s so easy to take part. You simply cover an empty shoebox with colourful wrapping paper, fill it with gifts that will bring delight to a child including toys, school supplies, hygiene items, sweets and a £3 shipping donation. Drop it off at a location near to you and we then send the shoeboxes to children overseas in Eastern Europe, Africa and Central Asia to remind them that they are loved and not forgotten. Last year we sent almost 1 million shoeboxes from the UK alone, and because we work with local churches in these countries, we know that the boxes are given out to those who really need them, regardless of their race, gender or religion. The shoebox gifts are simply destined for, and will be given to children living in difficult situations in some of the toughest parts of the world. We know that many children in the UK, even those who are quite young, love taking part in this campaign by choosing the gifts that go into their shoeboxes. It is a tangible and meaningful way to get them involved early in the act of giving and learning about people who are less fortunate than themselves. Please pack a shoebox gift this year and ensure that at least one more child in this world will know that God loves them, and that someone has taken the time to send them a special gift. www.samaritans-purse.org.uk/what-we-do/ operation-christmas-child
