Autumn 2012 Phew what a summer! If you’ve had a hectic one like me you’ll be looking forward to getting back into a routine this Autumn with the children back into childcare or school and the clubs & classes starting back up again. With a focus on starting or going back to school in September, we’ve brought you a special feature on the many benefits of reading to children from a young age. To accompany that we’ve also brought you an article on the different services the many libraries across the county have to offer, all of which are completely free so well worth taking advantage of with your child. If you’re looking to start a new class with your little one this September then be sure to check out our Clubs & Classes starting on page 10 and our Weekly Activities Timetable starting on page 29. It was great to hear how useful many of you found our new timetable so we’re delighted to make it a regular feature. We’ve brought you another new feature this issue: ‘Parenting Q & A’. This is an advice column for you to ask local counsellor and mum of 2, Rachel Bridgeford, your parenting related queries or concerns. Whether you’re directly affected by the issues raised or not it makes for a very interesting read. If you have a query or concern you’d like to put to Rachel then please do e-mail it and we’ll endeavour to print Rachel’s response in the next issue. Our other main feature this Autumn is our Halloween and Bonfire Night ‘What’s On’ guide in our centre pages. Halloween seems to become a bigger event with every passing year with more activities and events to entertain the children than ever. Well whatever you get up to this Autumn we hope it’s a good one. Until the Winter.....
Vanessa

hildren, Staff and Governors at Trinity Lower School, Aldwincle and Aldwincle Playgroup have been celebrating recently after both settings were classed as ‘good’ under the new Ofsted framework. Both inspections recognised the value placed on children as individuals by each setting and praised the ways in which every child’s needs were met socially and academically. The playgroup is commended for enabling the children to ‘ extend their play and develop their independence’ through ‘effective organisation of children into small groups with their key workers’ who ‘ build effective relationships and get to know individual children well’. Chantall Ridd-Jones, Chair of the Playgroup Governing Committee and Helen Mallett, Chair of Governors of Trinity School commented that ‘we are delighted with the results of our inspections which are a very fair reflection and provide recognition of the efforts that the staff and governing committees have put into providing a high quality and nurturing start to our children’s education.’ To see more information, please visit the website: www. aldwincleplaygroup.btik.com

Sing and Sign Prove They Can in Chatterbox Challenge
his summer Sing and Sign, the UK’s favourite baby signing classes, held their Chatterbox Challenge events in aid of iCan, a charity which supports children from 0 to 18 with communication difficulties. Our local Sing and Sign practitioner, Amanda Walker, said: “A marvellous time was had by all, including older siblings, and there were many fabulous costumes worn. We had the obligatory fairies, princesses, pirates and superheroes, as well as Mr Tumble and my personal favourite, 118 118!! Amazing what you can do with an eyeliner pencil!!” Amanda would like to thank the Woodcroft Scout Centre in Kettering and Park Road Baptist Church in Rushden who gave the use of their venues free of charge for the events. A good sum was raised which will be winging its way to the charity shortly. Many thanks to all who took part.

Do You Read and Share Books With Your Child? The Benefits Of Doing So And How To Do It Effectively
I
t is never too early to start sharing books with your child, in fact the earlier you start the more beneficial it will be for them. Extensive studies have been carried out into the subject and substantial evidence found to prove the following benefits: Reading and sharing books with your child...
1
Helps establish a strong and loving bond between parent and child.
2
Supports the development of speech and language.
3
Encourages the development of listening and concentration skills
4
Encourages discussions, debate, play and fun activities. Stories and talking about books helps develop empathy and encourages children to recognise and talk about their feelings.
5
Books teach a child about life and the world around them.
6
Increases a child’s readiness for school by giving them many of the skills needed, such as: a good vocabulary, an understanding of how books work, the curiosity, imagination and eagerness to know about the world around them.
7
Sharing books from birth supports the development of physical coordination through page turning, lifting flaps and pointing at images.
8
Helps promote a routine if you read at the same time each day. Reading at bedtime can calm a child down ready for sleep.
Reference: “The Bookstart Theoretical Framework”
Tips for Reading To Your Child and Encouraging a Love of Books:
• Choose books that are suitable for your child’s age and read a variety of different books • Read to your child daily and create a routine for your reading sessions • Read out loud and with expression, use different voices for different characters • Let your child join in and ask questions • Let your child read to you sometimes • Choose fun books with flaps and touchy-feely pages for younger children • Let your child choose the book sometimes • Store your child’s books where they can easily reach them so they can help themselves too • Take your child to your local library where they can get their own membership card, join the Bookstart Bear Club and take part in Rhymetime Sessions. (See page 9 for more information on library services for Early Years).

Bubble Babies - Splashing Good Fun!
S
tart your weekend with a splash in the wonderfully warm waters of Kingsley School Hydrotherapy Pool, Kettering! Bubble Babies invites the whole family to come along and take part in its dynamic and fun filled swimming classes for babies from birth to school age. Saturday mornings will never be the same again!! In the ‘tropical-like’ conditions, babies keep warm, comfortable and relaxed and are happy to work through a whole range of vital aquatic skills for the full half hour lesson. Confident that their child is responding positively to this optimum environment, parents can thus turn all their energies to focusing on the development of baby’s potential. Progress can be swift and very satisfying for all involved! Inherent in the carefully planned and structured lessons are a wide variety of exciting games and races where newly acquired skills are practised amidst much laughter and sometimes a bit of cheating (usually the dads!). In fact often it is hard to see who is the child and who is the responsible adult! Erika has been running Bubble Babies Swim School for 8 years and her enthusiasm is just as great, if not greater, as when she first started. ‘It is such a pleasure to witness the journeys of newborn babies from their first visit to the pool to becoming confident, safety-conscious swimmers with a lifelong love of the water stretching out in front of them. The fact that
I sometimes get to chase them with a big inflatable crocodile (Mr Croc) makes it all the more fun!’ This vibrant mix of developing skills, with a wide range of equipment, and exciting activities ensures significant quality time and strong bonds are encouraged to form between parent and baby. It is perhaps for this reason that Netmum’s members voted Bubble Babies one of their favourite Pre-school Classes in North Northamptonshire this year and we were thrilled to receive the Silver Award; thank you to everyone who voted! In recognition of all their efforts, mini swimmers are awarded the STA’s Starfish Badges and Certificates and the older children work through the Stanley First Steps Series awards. ‘This is the best group for babies to learn to swim in. My baby started at just 8 weeks old and is now diving and has no fear in the water. He splashes and kicks and has made lots of new friends’, enthuses Rachael in her Netmums review. In October we have another Underwater Photograph session lined up and this exciting event is open to anyone who would like to come along and is confident in going under the water. What better souvenir of those happy times and earliest swims? Treasure those Precious Moments with a Professional Portrait
A
t Precious Moments we believe that it is a real privilege to be involved in preserving the memories of pregnancy, childhood and family life - and feel that the love and passion we have for our work is evident in the photographs we take. Below we run through the process of how its done! Your photo session takes place in a fun and friendly studio environment – sittings usually take around 45 minutes. Our aim is to make your little one/s feel as comfortable as possible – so we do things at their pace and work around what they want to do – we find that this relaxed and informal approach produces the most spontaneous and natural portraits. Our photographer will use a range of backgrounds and props to create your portraits, although you are more than welcome to bring any toys or props that you would like your little one/s to be photographed with – a change of clothes is also a great idea too! After your photography session, you will be asked back for a viewing a few days later to preview your images. All you then have to do is pick your favorites! We will then work with you to create your original and vibrant portraits and layouts. Whether it is black and white, colour, traditional, or something more contemporary, it will be unique to you. You can then choose from our affordable range of traditional or contemporary frames, canvas prints, and much more to show your beautiful portraits off at their very best. Now you can treasure those Precious Moments forever! For more information or to view examples of our work and products please visit: www. yourpreciousmoments. co.uk To book your session please ring us on 01536 384047. Primary School Admissions It’s Time For Parents To Apply For Their Child’s Primary School Place
T
he start of the new school year sees many parents across the county on the search for the right primary school for their child. This year, Northamptonshire County Council is running a campaign targeting all parents with children who turn four years old between 1st September 2012 and 31st August 2013, to help raise awareness to parents of the right time to apply for their child’s school place and how to do it.
Primary School Admissions If your child turns 4 before 31st August 2013 it’s time to apply for their primary school place Deadline for applications is: 15th January 2013 Make your application and find helpful tips and information online at:
www.northamptonshire.gov.uk/admissions
Apply online for your child’s primary school place by 31st October to be in with a chance of winning an iPad! Terms and conditions apply – please see our website.
WIN AN
iPAD
Don’t delay, apply today!
Applications open on Monday 10th September 2012 and will close on Tuesday 15th January 2013. There are many myths surrounding applying for a child’s primary school place which the county council aims to stamp out as part of this campaign. For the first time ever, they will be contacting parents directly to tell them it’s time to apply for their child’s primary school place which will reinforce the fact that they must do this regardless of whether: • They have put their child’s name down at their preferred school • The child lives in the area near the school • They have an older brother or sister already at the preferred school Late applications are always a problem. This year in Northampton alone there were over 200 late applications which resulted in disappointment for many parents as they missed out on a place at their preferred school.
PRIZE SPONSORED BY:
With this in mind, the county council is running an early bird incentive and has secured an iPad which has kindly been donated by Capita, to give away as a prize. All online applications that are received by 31st October 2012 will be entered into a draw to win this fantastic prize (terms and conditions apply). Parents are encouraged to apply for their child’s school place online rather than by paper form and they can do this at: www.northamptonshire.gov.uk/admissions
Roadshows The school admissions team will be out on the road in libraries across the county hosting roadshows to help parents through the application process. Parents will be able to get help and advice at these events. Look out for dates on our website.

Parenting Q & A Need some help or advice on a parenting related issue? Local qualified counsellor and Mum of 2, Rachel Bridgeford from Soul Attention Counselling Service, answers our readers queries and dilemas...
Q
I’m pregnant with my second child and due in 8 weeks. I already have a little boy, aged 2, who is very active. I’m starting to worry how I will cope with an active toddler and a newborn baby and how I will entertain both of them. Lucy from Isham. Mum to James age 2
A
First of all congratulations on your impending new arrival! As a mother of two myself I can assure you that although it can be hard work, the pleasure you are going to get from watching your two children interact with each other and develop a relationship will be immense. The hardest period will be the first six months whilst your baby is too little to play and you are at your most tired. At this stage the baby will still be sleeping a lot so you could use this time to take them out for walks or to the park to burn off some of James’ energy. Once your baby is a little older your children will begin to amuse each other. Your baby particularly will be fascinated by everything James does and will enjoy watching you play with him. With regards to feeding times one very useful hint is to plan ahead and ensure that James has settled to something that he enjoys doing or has a snack in front of him before you begin feeding the baby. I used books with accompanying CDs or DVDs but maybe James would prefer something like a little race track or train set? If you have a support network of family and/ or friends around you I strongly encourage you to make use of this as much as possible. If you haven’t already done so maybe you could also consider a day’s childcare at nursery or a childminder for James? At two years old he would enjoy the social time and you would benefit from the break and have more energy for the days when you have them both at home. Your worries are completely natural but as with any new baby there will be an initial steep learning curve where things are quite hard, but this will not last forever and you will soon settle into a new structure.
Q
My baby is 3 months old now and soon I will have to decide whether to return to work or stay at home. I do miss my work and a large part of me would like to go back, part time at least, but my partner doesn’t want me to, he would like me to stay at home to look after our daughter full time. I’m fortunate that my partner earns enough for us to just about survive on his salary but I’m not sure I want to be a stay-at-home Mum. I feel like a bad Mum though if I do go back to work. What should I do?
A
Jo from Kettering. Mum to Isla age 3 months
It sounds like this a really tough decision for you and you are feeling all sorts of things about it. First things first though, going back to work would not make you a bad mum! I can understand the guilt you may be feeling about going back to work, however in families the needs of all the members must be considered and that includes you! If staying at home would leave you feeling discontented then that would also impact on your partner and daughter. That said however, I notice that Isla is still very young and I am wondering if she is even sleeping through the night yet? If she is not then you are still in the hardest period of being a mum and this may be affecting how you feel about staying at home. Maybe in the next three months your feelings on the subject may become a bit clearer? Once you have made a definite decision, the next thing to work on is communicating your feelings to your partner. If the two of you struggle to understand each other’s perspectives on this I would urge you to consider a couple of sessions of couples counselling. Quite often couples become wrapped up in resentment at each other because neither feels listened to or understood. This is often down to the fact that both individuals have different styles of communicating and different needs in terms of what has to happen for them to feel loved. A good counsellor can help you to understand each other’s needs and requirements better. If you do wish to do this I would be happy to recommend someone whom I have seen myself in the past.
If you have a question or parenting dilema you would like to put to Rachel, please email it to us at advice@timefortots.co.uk. The deadline for inclusion in the next issue is the 1st November. Continued overleaf...

Q
I’m trying to potty train my daughter but finding it really difficult. She has accident after accident and it’s really getting me down. Everything I read says don’t go back to nappies once you’ve made the decision to put them in pants but I’m at my wits end! Jane from Rushden Mum to Cerys age 2.5 years
A
Issues such as this are so tough and put stress on both parent and child so I can completely appreciate how this must be making you feel. Dealing with a problem like this is quite hard via this medium as obviously I don’t know you or Cerys and therefore can’t really make a judgement about how either of you are reacting to this which is a key point. Therefore I would like to pose a couple of questions for you to think about.. What made you decide to start potty training in the first place? I am asking you to think about whether you felt you ‘should’ start because others around you had already got their, similar aged children out of nappies or whether Cerys genuinely showed signs of being ready for it. Signs would include dry nappies for longer periods and an interest in using the potty and/or the toilet i.e. going to it spontaneously or wanting to come with you when you go. If it’s the first of these points then it’s possible you may have started before she is ready and are therefore
fighting an uphill battle. If this is the case it might be worth returning to nappies for a while and offering her plenty of opportunities to get used to the potty or toilet such as taking her with you whenever you go and offering her the chance to sit on it regularly even if she does nothing. This would take the fight out of the situation and give you both some breathing space. You shouldn’t feel bad about doing this if your judgement tells you it is the best thing to do. Trust your own instincts on this. Secondly I’m wondering if Cerys has been having accidents since the beginning of potty training or if accidents have restarted following a period of dryness. If it’s the latter then this is quite common as children quickly learn that they can use such behaviour as a weapon to get attention or rebel in some way against your rules. If you feel she is doing this then you should approach each accident in as low key a way as possible, barely even acknowledging that anything has taken place. Just clean her and change her clothes with as little interaction as possible. This would leave her without the attention she is seeking and therefore make the behaviour of no use to her. The main thing here is for you to assess for yourself what you think the accidents are all about. You know your child best and, ultimately, you have to decide what is best for both of you. Advice on these issues is plentiful but it often conflicts so your judgement will always be the most important thing. Take heart in the fact that you are not alone in this (my own 4 and a half year old daughter still wears pull ups at night) and you never see a healthy adult wearing a nappy!
