Autumn 2014 Hello and Welcome to the Autumn Issue! After a glorious summer it’s now time to get back into a routine with the start of a new academic year. If your little one is starting pre-school or school this year we wish them (and you!) lots of luck. If you find you have a gap in your week come September and are looking for something to do with your little one then have a browse through the Clubs & Classes section, starting on page 20, and the Weekly Activities Timetable on page 53. There are plenty of activities to cover all interests and budgets. If you find yourself with a little more ‘me’ time with September’s new schedule then check out our ‘Time for Mum’ section on pages 36 to 39 for health & beauty treats - including Sanctuary of Beauty’s ‘Top Tips for Busy Mums’. With Halloween and Bonfire Night looming as we get deeper into Autumn, we’ve once again brought you the low down on what’s happening where for both events. Dare you ride Nene Valley Railway’s Wizard Express? Or delve your hand into one of Greentrunks Garden Centre’s ‘Boxes of Fear’? Whatever you do have a great Autumn! Until the winter...

anctuary of Beauty in Desborough has been voted the Northants Evening Telegraph Salon of the Year! Well done ladies! This award has given us a big confidence boost”. In other news, congratulations to their trainee, Jess, who is now a fully qualified therapist. A
nation spreading kindness! Thursday November 13th is not just a National Day of Kindness but a World Kindness Day, so let us all embrace it across our County. It’s a wonderful thing which everyone can do . . . to be mindful of showing some extra kindness towards others - and it doesn’t cost a penny! The many benefits of the effects of being kind have been extensively researched and how kindness can increase our personal happiness. One of my favourite writers on the subject is Dr David Hamilton PhD “Why Kindness is Good for You”. As well as it making us feel happier inside, the increased emotional warmth releases the positive ‘cardioprotective’ hormone Oxytocin which can help our hearts by reducing blood pressure, it can slow down the aging process, it improves our relationships & it becomes contagious like a ripple effect as acting kinder towards others inspires them to feel much kinder too! In my Cognitive Hypnotherapy practice I look at ways to help clients explore this feel good factor so they can increase their personal wellbeing and happiness. I suggest looking for 3 different ways to do a random act of kindness towards someone else everyday, here are some suggestions: • Hold a door open for someone • Pay someone a compliment • Surprise someone with a cup of tea • Make a lovely meal for a loved one or friend especially if this is not the norm! • Smile as you pass people in the street • Clean someone’s car for them • Give up your seat to another on the bus, train or tube • Offer to help someone who might be struggling - either crossing the road or carrying heavy bags • See what you could do to help a neighbour • Be kind to yourself too Remember that being kind is in thought, spoken word and deed, so everything counts in the happiness factor. Enjoy the kindness of each other today, it may start a ripple effect across the world for weeks to come!

hat an amazing day we had on Friday 27th June at our Big Toddle at Wicksteed Park! Despite the down turn in the weather (the first wet day in weeks!) we were thrilled to see so many of you (into the hundreds) turn out to take part and help raise such a fantastic amount for less privileged children. The weather (together with the absence of 14 students who were supposed to come and help but didn’t show!) did make the day more of a challenge but we pulled together and made the most of it and lots of fun was had by all. The day started with registration where every child taking part was given a goody bag and those that raised £10 or more a ticket for a FREE ride on the Wicksteed Express after the toddle. We also handed out balloons and stickers and children were kept entertained with the giant games and bouncy castle (kindly lent to us by ES Promotions) not to mention the appearance of a certain pig that goes by the name of Peppa and enjoys jumping in muddy puddles (which there were an abundance of on this particular day!) After registration it was over to Naomi from Music Makers who performed a little warm-up with the children, getting them fired up and ready to toddle, before the big countdown and the toddle itself! The route took children past the front of the pavilion, down the path, over the train track to the lake, over the humped back bridge and back up. With so many taking part no sooner had we waved off the last participants than the first ‘toddlers’ had arrived back! On crossing the finish line children were greeted by ‘Todd’ from Barnardo’s and rewarded with a special Barnardo’s Big Toddle medal and a Shaun the Sheep colouring book (donated by WEETABIX). They could then make their way to the refreshments stand for a free drink and snack of their choice. (Thank-you to Bunzl for donating the drinks and chocolate and Eureka in Wellingborough for the fruit). Once the hard work was done everyone could relax and enjoy the games, stalls and entertainment courtesy of Jelly Tots Entertainment. The sun came out at just the right time so we could enjoy a picnic on the lawn! With the FREE train ride to take and all the fun of the Wicksteed playground too there was plenty to keep everyone entertained until they’d had enough. It took a few weeks after the toddle to collect all the money in but when we finally did and arrived at our final figure we were STUNNED! In all the weeks of planning the event we never dreamt we would raise such a fantastic amount. Thank-you so much to everyone who took part, everyone who sponsored a participant and everyone who donated their time and/or resources to the event. You are all stars! Find out how your efforts are making a difference to the lives of less privileged children overleaf....

A word from the charities... Rachael Voss from Barnardo’s:
“I would like to say a HUGE thank you on behalf of Barnardo’s to the Time for Tots team and everyone who took part in their Big Toddle. It really was a fantastic day and enjoyed by so many. I was really happy to have been involved myself, not so happy to have been inside the giant purple Todd costume but someone had to do it! The list below gives an idea of where the vital funds raised will go and the difference it will make to so many children and young people’s lives. We are always on the look out for volunteers and We raised £5383.50 for Barnardo’s! fundraisers to join us throughout the rest of the year. Big or small event, every penny counts!” • £10 pays for toys for a play therapy session for a child who has been abused, allowing them to express their feelings • £25 lets us give emergency warm clothing and toiletries to a child who has run away from home, and who is sleeping rough on the streets • £30 allows a child from a deprived area to go to the seaside for a day – possibly their first ever holiday • £50 pays for a “home starter kit” for a young person who has become homeless due to substance abuse, and is in temporary accommodation • £100 will pay for one vulnerable child who has been bereaved to have three sessions with a psychologist, to help them rebuild their lives • £500 pays for five places on a summer place scheme where vulnerable children are able to play, make friends and increase their confidence • £1,000 provides a long-term unemployed young person with the accredited training which they require, allowing them to find sustainable employment and turn their life around Rachael Voss Community Fundraising Volunteer Manager Tel: 01509 815252
Karen Rogers from Alfe’s Cause:
We raised £1500 for Alfe’s Cause!
“Thank you to everyone who was involved with the Time for Tots Big Toddle. The money Alfe’s Cause have received will go towards continuing to fund our monthly meetings for the charity families to spend quality time together. The money will also be used to pay for the printing of our information leaflets to support our childhood cancer awareness campaign. September is childhood cancer awareness month in the UK and the 15th September also marks the 5th anniversary of Alfe getting diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Gold is the colour of the childhood cancer awareness ribbon and so on the 15th September Alfe’s Cause are asking people/ nurseries to wear gold/yellow on behalf of Alfe’s Cause for a small donation”.

What is a present worth?
H
Help put a smile on a child’s face this Christmas
ow many presents will your children get for Christmas this year? Can you even remember how many they received last year? How big a pile would it make if you could get together all the presents your children had received since they were born? Yet there are millions of children around the world who have never received a present, in fact, the very thought is so alien that when you first give them a gift they will smile, enjoy it and then hand it back as they cannot believe it is theirs to keep. Operation Christmas Child, the world’s largest Christmas Children’s appeal, run by the Christian charity Samaritan’s Purse, aims to help make sure that as many of those children as possible, at least once in their lifetime, get to know what it feels like to be given a joyous gift. Since 1990, we have partnered with caring people like you to deliver over 113 million shoebox gifts to children around the world. And it’s so easy to take part. You simply cover an empty shoebox with colourful wrapping paper, fill it with gifts that will bring delight to a child including toys, school supplies, hygiene items, sweets and a £3 shipping donation. Drop it off at a location near to you and we then send the shoeboxes to children overseas in Eastern Europe, Africa and Central Asia to remind them that they are loved and not forgotten. Last year we sent almost 1 million shoeboxes from the UK alone, and because we work with local churches in these countries, we know that the boxes are given out to those who really need them, regardless of their race, gender or religion. The shoebox gifts are simply destined for, and will be given to children living in difficult situations in some of the toughest parts of the world. We know that many children in the UK, even those who are quite young, love taking part in this campaign by choosing the gifts that go into their shoeboxes. It is a tangible and meaningful way to get them involved early in the act of giving and learning about people who are less fortunate than themselves. Please pack a shoebox gift this year and ensure that at least one more child in this world will know that God loves them, and that someone has taken the time to send them a special gift. Article by Chris Roberts, South Midlands Regional Manager for Samaritan’s Purse & Lynne Dejoodt, OCC UK Project Leader
How can you get involved? Whether you take part as an individual or family, or as part of a larger group (such as nursery school, parent and tots group or local class), packing and preparing a shoebox couldn’t be easier. You will find lots of resources to order or download at the website: www.operationchristmaschild.org.uk, including what to put in your shoebox, how to pack it and where to drop it off in your local area – you can even purchase decorative flatpack shoeboxes. Alternatively there is an ‘Operation Christmas Child’ leaflet which contains all the information you need, including labels for your box(es). Look in your local church and/or library for the leaflet. The deadline for submitting shoeboxes is 18 November, so be sure to pack and deliver your box(es) before then.

Introducing Trostisar..
Award-winning, Innovative Products to Soothe & Comfort Young Children
L
aunched into the UK in July 2014, Trostisar has developed an imaginative range of unique and exciting healthcare and toy products to help soothe and comfort children experiencing fears and anxieties they may encounter from an early age. Parents and carers experience situations on a daily basis when their children are anxious, often seemingly unnecessarily, and where rational attempts to calm a child leaves them even more upset. Small bumps to the head, a trip to the doctor, receiving treatment in hospital or a first day at school can be upsetting and stressful for both child and parents, and millions of children around the world are afraid of the dark when it comes to bedtime.
Cuddly Plasters
Trostisar’s product ranges are designed specifically to use toys to alleviate fear in children. The Trostisar are six adorable and fun characters who love children and use their special powers to develop new products which calm and soothe children when they are hurt or upset. Trostisar’s award winning First Care range is the only product range in the UK to offer real innovation in the First Aid market. The Cuddly Plasters are soft, velvety plasters which adhere either to normal plasters or straight onto the skin to provide comfort to a child who has been injured or is scared. These are available in either the Trostisar or ever popular Angry Birds characters. A night-time range of cuddly plasters with a glow-in-the-dark heart allow a new special bedtime plaster to protect a wound after bath time, fading gently as a child falls asleep. The Bumpsicle is a re-fillable ice-pack in a soft, velvety character which is used to soothe a child who has experienced a sore, bump, sting or bite, and can then be opened up to be eaten as an ice-pop. We are very proud that both our Cuddly Plasters and Bumpsicle products are the recipient of a Gold Family Choice 2014 Award, recognising the positive difference that our products make to the lives of children and families around the world. Other products include a Gentle Sleep Range, designed to be used as a regime to encourage your child to fall asleep gently and easily. For younger children, our BedBlocks make it easy for parents to raise the pillow end of a cot when a child has a cold or colic, as recommended by NHS guidelines. Also available are cute cuddle blankets and soft toys which are both super soft and colourful, with children easily relating to the characters and their protective super-powers.

Bubble Babies Swim School For Babies from Birth to Five Years Old
Welcome to Bubble Babies!
Explode into action at the weekend in the tropical conditions of Kingsley School Hydrotherapy Pool, Kettering where the water is a wonderful 34 degrees! Saturday mornings will become the highlight of your week as you and your little one enjoy together the dynamic, fun filled experiences that Bubble Babies swimming classes inspire. All members of the family are welcomed along to enjoy these precious moments when baby acquires more and more vital aquatic skills leading to a life long love of the water!
Learn in Luxury
With you and baby luxuriating in the warm water and air temperatures, optimum conditions are achieved: comfortable and relaxed you can maximise on your swimming session, focusing purely on baby’s enjoyment, skills and progress. Needless to say, landmark achievements are often swift in coming and are always intensely satisfying for all those involved. The carefully structured lessons ensure that a whole range of activities and equipment is introduced, leading to an appreciation of all four strokes and of baby being confident, happy and safe in the water, ABOVE and BELOW!
Dads are welcome!
Bonding opportunities between adult and child overflow in the positive and self-affirming atmosphere of each Bubble Babies class and it is highly entertaining to welcome so many Dads along. Way before lunchtime, we may have swum across white water rivers to islands where the children climb up then dive off the other side. We may have built a lodge for a beaver and even built gravity defying towers around the pool as we practise our different skills. There’s always the chance that Mr Croc (inflatable of course!) will chase after us!
and inspiring her mini swimmers. ‘It’s a win-win situation! I get to jump and dive, float like a jelly fish and spin around under the water until I’m dizzy - all the things that I love to do - and the kids just zoom into action! The energy is infectious!’
Badges and Certificates
To celebrate everyone’s achievements, babies receive the STA’s Starfish Badges and Certificates, while the older children earn the Stanley First Steps Series Awards. By firmly establishing the principles of good swimming technique in an encouraging, happy environment, Bubble Babies aims to create multi-skilled, water-confident, safety-conscious swimmers with a lifelong love, respect and enjoyment of the water.
Underwater Photo Shoot
In November we have another Underwater Photograph session booked. This exciting event is open to anyone who would like to come along and is confident going under the water. What better souvenir of those happy times and earliest swims?
Ask the parents!
At the end of her time at Bubble Babies, Sophie (Evie’s mum) wrote, “We’ve thoroughly enjoyed our swimming lessons and will really miss them Saturday mornings have been such a highlight in my week! You’re a fantastic teacher and you do an absolutely amazing job! Thank you so much for having us and for teaching Evie to swim - we will really miss you!”

eing a mum of two, I must admit my skin care regime has become somewhat slack, and as a previously trained beauty therapist, I can’t believe I’m saying that! So I was thrilled recently to have the opportunity to trial some products by The Earth Works Cosmetics (TEWC). I soon realised how much I used to love products and began enjoying this new skin care routine straight away. My main issue with any routine is time, I’m sure we can all relate to that, but actually incorporating this routine into my day was not a problem. The first thing I noticed about these products were the beautiful fragrances, the use of zesty scents lemon, lime and orange work really well. I was lucky enough to try a few products from the range including: • Fragrance Free Cleansing Oil - which was great at removing mascara and left your skin feeling very moisturised. • The Grapefruit Facial Exfoliator - a once or twice a week product but my favourite! I always thought exfoliators were harsh and avoided using them, I do have sensitive skin and facial exfoliators can aggravate, however this was lovely. • The Regenerating Night Treatment - which you just apply to the face before you go to bed, I loved the simplicity of it and could see the benefits to my skin straight away. • I also used some body butters and body oil which are used after a bath or shower, just smother yourself and enjoy! I would highly recommend the Earth Works Cosmetics products, and after trialing samples would be more than happy to buy. Prices start from as little as £3.75 so they are really affordable
cosmetics. My hands were really dry and indirectly these products have significantly improved the condition of my skin without even applying any hand cream. They do have a hand cream so I must try that soon. The Earth Works Cosmetics are locally produced in Rothwell so by buying them you are also supporting a local business. Ally who owns and makes the products is very passionate about what goes into them and the focus is on natural ingredients with no nasty chemicals. Her products have gone through all the EU regulations being rigorously tested to ensure they meet EU standards. Pamper Parties To introduce the products Ally is running TEWC pamper parties. Why not host your own party and invite your friends to come along and try these amazing products? To find out more about the products visit: www.tewcosmetics.co.uk. To book a pamper party get in touch with ally at: a.sharratt@tewcosmetics.co.uk.

Top Beauty Tips for Busy Mums! By Samantha from Sanctuary of Beauty The secret to maintaining beautiful nails...
F
irstly your cuticles need to always be kept hydrated using an oil. This is where the nail is formed, so healthy cuticles equal a healthy nail. The shape of the nail is also very important, it needs to compliment your fingers. If they are filed in the wrong shape they, will break. Filing them every other day will stimulate the nail and encourage it to grow. The are a lot of Nail Strengtheners on the market some are not as effective as others, I have seen great results with Nailtiques this is my personal favourite. When selecting a nail care treatment you need to be aware what type of nail you are treating. A peeling weak nail needs protein and a hard dry nail needs a conditioner. Finally a touch of colour will make your hands stand out and bring a smile to your face! Don’t forget to use a base coat. Painting two layers of colour will give great depth and a top coat will add shine and durability. Your now on your way to beautiful healthy nails! For any more guidance book in for a Nailtiques Consultation. Love Samantha

Time for Mum
Meet our Summer
‘Mum in a Million’ T
hank-you to everyone who wrote in to nominate a local mother for our Summer ‘Mum in a Million’ competition. It was a tough decision again but we eventually selected our winner: Childminder and Mum of 4, Natasha, from Moulton. Natasha was nominated by Katie, whose little boy Natasha looks after.
We’re delighted to be able to treat Natasha to a de-stress, pre-blend aromatherapy back, neck and shoulder massage followed by a luxury face, neck and scalp massage courtesy of Julz Therapy in Rushden. Thank-you to Julz Therapy for supplying the prize, to Katie for nominating Natasha and to Natasha for letting us share your story.
}N
Here’s why Natasha is a Mum in a Million (in Katie’s words):
atasha is a registered childminder and currently looks after my little boy. She is registered as ‘Outstanding’ with OFTSED and is just a wonderful person in so many ways. I have lots to thank her for as she shows my son so much personal attention. He has speech and hearing issues (which we are in a long process of overcoming) and she dedicates so much time to him and all of the children in her care, going above and beyond what is expected of her. Natasha has 4 children of her own. 2 are at the age where they have left home now, but she still does plenty to help and support them and their families, and 2 still live at home with her. One of her boys she schools from home due to a situation at his school. With all her caring for others, Natasha never seems to take time for herself which is why I nominated her to win this prize. As I’m sure many others who know her would agree, she really deserves some time to herself and what better way to do this than with some pampering! She ‘parents’, and ‘teaches’ so much to so many. She truly is a ‘MUM IN A MILLION’

Do you know a super-mum who really needs a little ‘me’ time? E-mail us with her name and the reasons you’re nominating her and she could be selected as our Autumn ‘Mum in a Million’ winning a facial and file & polish at Sanctuary of Beauty in Desborough AND an Earth Works Cosmetics goody bag to take home. Every Mum is special and deserving of some time to herself of course but if you know a local Mum that you think goes above and beyond what is expected of her then please e-mail in with her story and she could win this fantastic prize. E-mail: info@timefortots.co.uk. Closing date is the 25th October 2014.

Childcare
Is your 2 year old eligible for free childcare? Ofsted Registered Childminders provide a Flexible, Home-Based Childcare Service. Depending on your circumstances you could be entitled to a childcare place for 12 hours a week (or 15 hours a week term time only) from the term following your child’s second birthday. A childminder could be the ideal choice for you as they operate on low ratios and can give your child lots of individual attention. A childminder will support you and your child through the sometimes difficult developmental steps like potty training, making friends, sharing and of course the sometimes challenging behaviour! Childminders will encourage children to learn and develop to their full potential through a wide range of activities, including out and about in the community and with larger groups of children. They are all police checked and trained in Child Development and First Aid as a minimum; many hold qualifications at Level 3 and above in Child Care. They also offer the free entitlement to childcare once your child becomes three until they start school. Childminders also offer school/ nursery collection so children benefit from the continuity of care. To find out of you are eligible please visit click ‘paying for childcare’ in the parents section on our website, then use the ‘find a childminder’ search to help find the childminder who suits your needs. Northamptonshire Childminding Association offers support, advice and training to childminders across the county as well as advice for parents looking for a childminder. Pregnancy & Birth
Natal Hypnotherapy™ What is Natal Hypnotherapy™? atal Hypnotherapy (NH) is the UK’s original form of hypnobirthing established in 2000 by clinical hypnotherapist and mother of 5, Maggie Howell. www.natalhypnotherapy.co.uk sells a range of self-hypnosis CDs and MP3 downloads and trains practitioners to deliver workshops throughout the UK. Happybirth covers Northamptonshire and South Leicestershire. Happybirth workshops involve: • teaching the skills of self-hypnosis • exploring the causes of fear around birth • the role and importance of hormones • practical skills for birth • empowering birth partners • working with your care providers.
N
How does it differ from other birth preparation classes? Our subconscious minds are so powerful, full of beliefs, habits and fears. Some of these are useful, some of them hold us back. By its very nature the process of giving birth is not under our conscious control. By learning hypnosis you can communicate directly with your subconscious mind to let go of fears and feel confident and positive about the birth of your baby. Isn’t it all about having a natural, pain-free, drug-free labour? No! Happybirth continues to use the words ‘contraction’ and ‘pain’. We are very lucky to live in a country where we have access to medical help during birth if we need it, and Happybirth will show you how to work with your midwife and doctor to have a calm and safe birth, whatever path your labour takes. Ultimately Natal Hypnotherapy™ allowed me to feel useful in the process, and as my little girl was born I felt so proud of what Karen had done.
Case study
Happybirth worked with Karen and Rich in the summer. Karen was fearful of labour as her first baby’s birth had been traumatic. Rich was unsure how he could support his wife. Karen The course was insightful and changed my perspective on giving birth. It gave me the confidence to centre my birth plan around what I wanted and be prepared. Harriett was overdue so I chose to be induced after carefully considering my choices. During the process I listened to the hypnotherapy CD and relaxed in preparation for labour. The techniques were incredibly useful and I was feeling relaxed and confident about the labour ahead. During the induction I had to overcome some hurdles but I didn’t let them phase me. When I was transferred to labour ward, Rich stepped straight into what we had learnt during the Happybirth course, he was using the relaxation techniques, stayed calm and was so supportive and encouraging. Although distracted, I managed to keep using the hypnobirthing techniques and at 4.18am having only had 2 paracetamol, our beautiful baby girl arrived weighing 8lb 11oz! It felt so incredible to experience giving birth naturally and I know that without the skills and techniques learnt doing the course there is no way I would have been able to get through it. Rich When Karen suggested we look at Happybirth I was sceptical, it sounded too alternative for my tastes but knowing that Karen was keen to give it a go I engaged with the process. I am so glad that we did: for me the Happybirth course gave me a clearly defined role during the birth of our second child. During the labour I felt confident in supporting Karen while she used the hypnotherapy techniques and I felt confident in being part of the decision making. Knowing our birth plan and being part of the process took some of the pressure off Karen and allowed her to be far more in control. Ultimately Natal Hypnotherapy™ allowed me to feel useful in the process, and as my little girl was born I felt so proud of what Karen had done. Pause for Thought..
The Super Power of a Two Year Old
S
uperman has his ability to fly and his super strength, Spiderman has all those arachnid capabilities, the X-Men do all sorts of wacky things, and so on, but do any of them have the ability to remain completely untroubled in life except when it comes to a dearth of yoghurt or the wrong colour underpants? No, they don’t (at least I don’t think they do), but toddlers do. Let me explain what I’m blathering on about. I’m talking about mindfulness; the ability to live in the moment. Two year olds have this ability as their default setting and, watching my own 2 year old son exemplify this yesterday, it was suddenly very apparent to me why we have an awful lot to learn from our little bundles of joy. They are referred to in this way for a reason, are they not? Yes they bring joy and laughter to our lives as parents but I don’t think that that is where this particular expression came from. I think it came from the fact the toddlers can find joy in the absolute simplest of things just by virtue of the fact that they are so unencumbered by thoughts of what they did yesterday or what they might find themselves doing for the rest of the day they are in. When they are looking at a ladybird, it is all about that ladybird. They don’t care that you are on the school run and running late or that said ladybird happens to be in the middle of a path
on which several other people are trying to make their way about their business. They only care that it is teeny and red and tickles when it is on a fingertip. Yesterday was a Saturday and, as such, is one of my most challenging days of the week. I’m on my own with my two small children and no car in a little village with a limited bus service and a finite number of places to explore and people to see (we’re fairly new to the village and don’t know many people and my family are hundreds of miles away). Now, to me, this is why Saturdays represent torture. Coming up with ideas to ‘keep them amused’ and avoid resorting to the TV feels way too much like particle physics to me and particle physics is not my ideal way of spending a Saturday. So when I woke up yesterday and realised it was going to be a rainy day my mood immediately took a turn towards frustration and irritation. For about the first 2 hours I went through the usual litany of books and games. I couldn’t face crafting because neither of them are that interested and, being 2, Luke usually eats something or draws somewhere he shouldn’t the minute I’m busy with 6 year old Holly. A puddle walk together was out of the question because Holly was feeling poorly so by lunchtime the
Please mention Time for Tots when responding to an advertisement
51 bored whinging had started and my insides were in knots. Just then in walks Luke with his wellies and raincoat and starts swinging on the backdoor handle. It was absolutely pouring down but Holly was asleep and all indoor games with Luke are necessarily noisy so I suited and booted him up and let him out into the garden. He was out there, happy as Larry, for an hour! ‘Where are you going with this?’ I hear you ask. Well, I’ll tell you. Aside from feeling frustrated with being village/housebound with the little ones I also have a number of other issues going on at the minute. Namely, I am incredibly anxious, all the time, about how I’m going to continue to financially support my children when work is hard to come by and I have very limited options for people I can leave them with if I were able to find work. The issue fills my mind most of the time and, more often than not , sends me into a complete tail spin which, at best makes me mildly anxious and, at worst, sends me into some pretty bad depressive states. But, watching Lukey Lu happily pottering about the garden yesterday in the pouring rain gave me an epiphany that went a little something like this: ‘It’s really quite a challenge to just be happy with what you have. I spend so much time thinking about what I ‘need’ to do; what I ‘should’ do in the next hour, day, month, year, my lifetime that I forget to just take pleasure in what I’m doing right now. ‘ And what I was doing right at that time, of course, was beaming happily whilst watching the little man having fun seeing how much he could drench himself by catching rain in his upturned umbrella then flipping it over. I’d stressed and stressed all morning about what I ‘should’ be doing with them and was feeling very unhappy. All it took was to watch him taking pleasure in the awful weather in his own little ‘in the moment way’ and I suddenly realised that I didn’t have to ‘do’ anything except follow the lead of the two year old boy whose wisdom clearly outshines my own in at least one way. I thought how much I loved him and the thought allowed me to tap into everything I have that I’m extremely grateful for. Turns out there’s a lot. The minute I was feeling grateful, happiness naturally followed and all I’d had to do to get there was stop and look and breathe.
So, there you have it. The superpower of a two year old is nothing more than the ability to focus on things that interest them and make them happy and go after it with determination . That’s ‘The Secret’. It’s something we all have the capability to do when we stop fixating on guilt and resentment about the past and anxiety and fear about the future. Little children don’t suffer from those things. One way or another those are things that are drummed into us as we grow up so that we eventually lose our ‘superpower’ to go from sad to happy in the blink of an eye. But imagine how different our lives as adults would be if we never lost that ability. Imagine how it would affect our choices and the decisions that often lead us straight off the path of happiness and into a quagmire of ‘shoulds’ and ‘musts’. Just imagine.... We all have responsibilities as grown ups, I’m not saying that’s wrong. Of course it’s not. That’s just life. The trick is, when you’re feeling overwhelmed and disempowered, just stop and think. Look around you and see what you have that you are grateful for and allow the knowing of what you WANT to do next, to come slowly into your consciousness from far back in that part of your brain that is still 2 years old and remember this:
“You don’t always need a plan. Sometimes you just need to breathe, trust, let go and see what happens” ~ Mandy Hale The universe has its own mysterious way of guiding you to your hearts desire. How was Luke to know that I’d let him play out in the pouring rain, not insist he come in for lunch and instead give him a banana and raisin picnic in his playhouse? If he’d stopped to consider whether I’d allow him to do this before indicating he wanted to go outside he probably wouldn’t have bothered. But he’s 2, he doesn’t do such stupid things as applying assumptions and reasoning to such simple things as what will make him happy, he just goes ahead and follows his heart.

G
roup B Streptococcus (group B Strep/GBS) is the most common cause of life-threatening infection in newborn babies. Tragically, the UK is way behind the rest of the world at preventing these devastating infections. GBS affects more babies than spina bifida and yet few pregnant women have heard of it. One in four pregnant women carry the group B Streptococcus (group B Strep/GBS) bacterium and it can be passed from mother to baby around birth. In the UK, GBS infects around 500 newborn babies a year despite existing prevention measures. It is the leading cause of severe infection in newborn babies - sepsis, meningitis and pneumonia – and the leading cause of meningitis in a baby’s first 3 months. 10 percent of these sick babies will die and 7 percent will survive with long-term physical or mental disabilities. Yet most of these infections could be prevented - simply, cheaply and easily. When a woman carrying group B Strep is given appropriate antibiotics in labour, the risk of her newborn baby developing the infection is reduced by almost 90%. The large majority of developed countries which a GBS prevention strategy routinely test pregnant women for GBS and the rate of these infections has fallen as a result by up to 85%. The NHS routinely offers pregnant women testing for syphilis, Hep B, HIV and even tests for smoking – yet not GBS. Testing for GBS is important since there are no symptoms of carriage – the only way to find out if you’re carrying it is to test. And around 40% of these infection in newborn babies occur when the mother has no identified risk factors. Apart from unknowingly carrying GBS. A safe, simple and inexpensive test late in pregnancy (35- 37 weeks) can detect the bacteria, allowing antibiotics to be offered to the mother in labour. Using antibiotics at this stage reduces the risk of GBS infection in newborns from around a one in 300 risk to less than one in 6,000. In England, Wales & Northern Ireland, the reported number of these infections has increased from 229 in 2003 to 281 between 2003 and 2011 (up by 23%) and the rate per 1,000 live births increased from 0.37 to 0.38 (up by 3%) since the introduction of the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists’ 2003 prevention guidelines. These increases come
despite the expectation of significant falls in group B Strep infections in newborn babies following their introduction Countries which have introduced screening-based prevention guidelines have seen their incidence fall significantly – in the USA by over 80% , in Spain by 86% and France by 71% . National charity Group B Strep Support campaigns for greater awareness and better prevention, including for the simple and safe ‘Gold Standard’ ECM test for GBS carriage to be offered to every pregnant mum. During July’s GBS Awareness Month 2014 –#GBSaware - Group B Strep Support will be urging pregnant women to get informed about GBS and consider testing. Jane Plumb MBE, chief executive of Group B Strep Support, who lost her middle child to GBS infection, is calling on the government to inform all pregnant women about GBS, “Every mother-to-be should be informed about GBS during routine antenatal care and if she wants to be tested for it in pregnancy, the ‘gold standard’ test should be readily available on the NHS. The Government should act now to ensure women get the very best advice and support during their pregnancy.” Group B Strep Support is asking that: • Information about GBS should be routinely given to all women during antenatal care • Sensitive testing for GBS should be made freely available within the NHS and offered to every pregnant woman whose baby is at low risk of developing GBS infection • Antibiotics should be offered intravenously in labour to all mums whose babies are known to be at higher risk of developing GBS infection Lindsay Nunn created a petition, ending on 10th February 2015 asking the Department of Health to ensure that EVERY woman is routinely given accurate information about group B Streptococcus during antenatal care. Please read it at http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/60515 and consider signing it, and sharing it with your friends and family Group B Strep Support www.gbss.org.uk.
