I

t is a well known fact that to sit in a chair all day is very, very bad for you. (I know - a chance would be a fine thing), but it is, oh so easy, to make excuses and say ‘I don’t have time to exercise’, ‘I am too tired - too overweight - too busy’. Having a young family is stressful, but we all find time to eat, to sleep, to shop and to work, so we owe it to our bodies to find one hour a week to exercise and take care or our health and well being. Exercise not only improves your mobility and shape, it also stimulates your brain, making you feel more alive and energised. It helps with your posture, keeps joints moving freely and increases your stamina and vitality. Come along to class and see how good it feels to do muscle toning exercises to music, that will flatten your tummy, tighten your thighs, firm your arms and give you that wonderful feeling of wellness, particularly after having had a baby! It’s never too late to start - you are never too young or old to be fit. Wear loose comfortable clothing and bring a mat to lie on, and just come along, we look forward to meeting you. Classes are held in Burton Latimer, Bozeat, Earls Barton and Denford, you can email barbarahootonschoolofdancing@yahoo.co.uk for a leaflet. You might be surprised at how much fun you can have doing something that is good for you. We also do adult ballet classes and adult tap classes if you would like a new challenge! Looking After Your Child’s Feet In Summer Top Tips from Funky Lil Feet

A

s the Spring weather will (hopefully) soon be upon us, Funky Lil Feet, along with the Association of Paediatric Chartered Physiotherapists, have some useful advice on purchasing the new season’s shoes for your child. As we turn from Winter into Summer people naturally want to have more open and casual style shoes for the warm weather. However this does not mean you have to compromise on the support and quality of your children’s footwear. As always please ensure you have your children’s feet professionally measured and fitted. This is vital as it takes 18 years for the growing child’s foot to fully develop. At birth the foot contains 22 partially developed bones and is comprised mainly of soft cartilage which can easily be deformed by ill fitting socks or babygros let alone shoes. By school age this will have increased to 45 bones. Over the next 13-14 years these bones will start to ossify (harden) and will fuse together to form the 26 bones that make up the mature adult foot. A good shoe fitter will always follow the guidance given below: uu A child’s shoe should be wider at the front than at the heel, with a toe box large enough to accommodate growing feet. When having your new pair of shoes fitted ideally there should be a 1cm space at the end of the toes, again your local professional fitters will be able to do this for you. uu They should always provide support around the heel. For little ones, especially when buying sandals, look for styles with an enclosed back to provide this support and try to avoid rubber clog style shoes which offer very little support for the foot (understandably there are occasions when you would wish to wear these, such as at the beach or by the pool, but you should really have a normal pair of supportive shoes/sandals for everyday use throughout the warmer weather). uu Shoes should have a good grip on the bottom and consider the fastenings. Ideally they should have a buckle, laces or velcro to help hold the heel in place during walking. Shoes that are just “slip on” tend to encourage the child to clench their toes when walking. Leather shoes are also preferable as it allows the foot to breathe.

uu If your child wears orthotics then please remember to take them with you when purchasing shoes so that the fitter can make sure they fit correctly inside the shoes (and they will help you select the most appropriate footwear for orthotics). At Funky Lil Feet we specialise in fitting shoes with orthotics and we also have a “quiet room” for children with special requirements where we can fit shoes without the noise and distraction of other children. in er mm ow Su ls n & g da rin an Sp & S s oe Sh

Featured Class: Scrum Kids

S

crum Kids is a family-run business offering safe, fun and non-contact rugby-based sports sessions for girls and boys aged between 2 and 7 in and around the Midlands, as well as in Cumbria. Talk us through a typical class

All our sessions are energetic and packed with activities, so that children are constantly engaged and focused. We take our warm ups and stretches really seriously to protect growing bodies – but we find a fun way to get them done at the start of every section, and then it’s time for the action. Our innovative games help children to start using some of the skills they can go on to use in a proper rugby game when they’re older – weaving round an obstacle course holding the ball in two hands, passing backwards to their partner, working out strategies in a team. At the end of the session, when the children are having a cool-down and chat with the coach, their ‘best bits of the session’ are often really varied. Their eyes all do seem to light up when we get out the child-sized rugby posts for some kicking practice, though!

What is the aim of your classes?

us, each Scrum Kid then has the basic skills ready should they wish to play rugby for a local club. Our youngest classes are the Toddlers sessions, for those aged 2 - 3.5. We then have Juniors sessions for those aged 3.5 - 5, and then finally our Seniors sessions for those aged 5 - 7.

The aim of the classes is to introduce core motor skills through rugby-based sessions that will improve a child’s agility, balance and coordination. The classes also provide a brilliant opportunity for parents to spend a bit of quality time with their child as we encourage parent participation in many of our games and activities.

When and where do you run classes?

How do classes benefit children?

Classes last between 30 and 40 minutes, depending on the age group session that a child is in. Our Toddlers classes are 30 minutes, while our Juniors and Seniors classes last for 40 minutes.

Scrum Kids classes have numerous benefits, not just in terms of encouraging children to enjoy physical activity, but also through social interactions with their team mates and their grown ups. Adult participation is a big part of Scrum Kids, and this lovely interaction aids social skills that help develop each child. Although there is no tackling and tag rugby only for the older groups, the physicality of the sessions encourages each Scrum Kid to try their best, while they also learn vital skills that will aid them in their everyday lives through basic movements and developing hand-eye coordination.

What ages are the classes for?

The classes are for children aged between 2 and 7, with the idea that at the end of their time with

We have classes at various locations around the Midlands, with sessions in Rugby, Kenilworth, Coventry, Desborough, Brackley, Lincoln and Grantham. An exciting new branch has just opened in Workington, Cumbria.

How long does each class last?

How much does a class cost?

Classes cost £5.50 each, paid in advance in halftermly blocks. On average there are six sessions per block.

“Always Tim by e to Bake” Cooking with Children: @alwaysti metobake A delicious meal for you to make and consume together!

Pesto Salmon with Roasted Vegetables and Couscous A light and nutritious lunch or supper that you and your child will enjoy cooking and eating. Making pesto from scratch in a pestle and mortar is a lovely introduction to the alchemy of cookery. Turning very simple ingredients into something so delicious is a deeply rewarding and sensory experience. Serves 4 generously ● Prep time about 30 minutes ● Cooking time about 1 hour

Ingredients Allergy advice: nuts can be replaced with chickpeas

2 courgettes chopped into 2cm discs 2 red or yellow peppers cut into 5cm squares 1 red onion cut into 8 wedges, skin left on 1 large aubergine cut into 1cm discs 4 salmon fillets 3 cloves garlic 150ml light olive oil + 1-2 tbsp 50g pine nuts 50g Parmesan cheese 250g couscous 300ml boiling water or vegetable stock

Tips for cooking with children  Encourage them to keep a tidy work station and clean up after themselves - place large plastic bowls nearby for peelings and rubbish and empty frequently  But accept that there will be a mess and don’t stress about it  Don’t rush - above all it should be a pleasant, fun experience so give yourselves plenty of time.

method

NB Instructions in blue are specifically for children 1. Preheat oven to 220° C. 2. Chop vegetables and place on a baking tray with 2 cloves of unpeeled garlic. Drizzle with 1-2 tablespoons of oil and massage with hands to coat. Place in oven for about 40 minutes, stirring occasionally. About 30 minutes in remove the garlic and set aside. When all the vegetables are soft and charred at the edges they are done. 3. In a pestle and mortar smash the remaining clove of peeled garlic with a pinch of salt until it forms a paste. Add the pine nuts and continue to smash, then the basil leaves until it becomes a messy paste. Slowly add the oil, stirring with a spoon. Once you have a lovely green sauce add the finely grated Parmesan. Taste. Add a squeeze of lemon if desired. * 4. Place salmon onto a sheet of foil and spread 2 teaspoons of pesto on each. Wrap loosely and place on baking tray. Place in oven for 15-20 minutes. Test by inserting a knife into the middle piece. If it is hot the fish is done. Keep warm by leaving it in the foil. 5. Place couscous into a heatproof bowl and pour over boiling stock. Cover and leave for about 10 minutes 6. In a small bowl squeeze out the roasted garlic from its skin and press with a spoon to form a paste. Add a pinch of table salt and 1 tablespoon of lemon juice. Stir to dissolve then add 3 tablespoons of olive oil. Stir well and taste. Add pepper to taste. 7. Fluff couscous gently with a fork, add the vegetables and pour over the dressing. Gently toss everything together. Taste again. 8. Serve on a large plate with the salmon and it’s juices placed on top. *Encourage your child to make the pesto noisily - this is the part they can do completely by themselves whatever their age, so let them enjoy being to told to make a noise when bashing the ingredients. Talk about the aroma and enjoy the magical transformation of the ingredients.

H

ello time for tots readers, So we now approach spring, a season of new life flourishing, with the continuous flow being the circle of life, some would say nature at its finest. Our bundles of joy from the day they enter the world gives us a sense of purpose, the joys we are told that having this stork deliver to us (this is what I thought happened) then reality hits and suddenly fades! We turn into a zombie, enjoying our time and moments with them then unknowing to us we had to sacrifice our sleep, food, showering on our own, our mental capability to process conversations so basically our freedom to life! We wish for some “me” time then when the opportunity arises, the guilt hits! This is where this months top tips will make this guilt disappear......... • Flutter your eyes to someone you trust to look after said bundle of joy. • Pack the essentials, or if going out get the essentials ready. • Switch your mind off, embrace this opportunity reflect on times that you enjoyed; hold that feeling and go with it. • Let the guilt slip away, you know they are safe and you have your phone. • Have fun and let your inner, fun-loving being do whatever it is you crave. A fulfilled parent brings more to the child than one that is stressing out and expressing emotions that are unnecessary and sacrifices your own life as a family. Let your hair down, relax and have fun! For those who do find this difficult please keep trying it, the more you do the easier it gets! You are still you they are just a part of your life, they have their own lives. Loving thoughts, Samantha x (Writing this in the bath with a hair mask on and the music playing with my 4 year old with a trustee!) Please mention Time for Tots when responding to an advertisement

Business mum: Sarah Silsby

From Sing and Sign east northants name: Sarah Silsby Family: 2 children, aged 6 and 2½ Describe your business:

In Sing and Sign classes we use music and song to practice signs that are easy for both babies and parents to learn and use. It’s great fun but also means that babies and their parents or carers can communicate with each other before babies learn to talk!

how long have you been doing this?

I’m in my first year as a Sing and Sign teacher and I’m loving it!

what did you do before?

I have a degree in Chemistry and French, and an MBA, and most of my work has been as a technical service chemist. I’ve travelled around the UK and Europe promoting products and trouble-shooting at customers’ factories.

why did you decide to start Sing and Sign?

I loved going along to Sing and Sign classes with both of my boys, and we found the early communication both helpful and great fun. When the opportunity arose to run the franchise for our area, and share the experience with other families, I went for it! Also, as classes are run around school terms, it was a great opportunity for me to spend more time at home with my children in the school holidays.

what do you like about it?

I love singing! And singing with babies and toddlers is so much fun. It’s amazing to watch the babies who are a little bit grizzly calm down and settle when they hear music or singing. And when they start to use their hands and make signs back, it’s so rewarding Parents and carers are so proud when their baby tells them something using their first sign. And I love that I’m able to spend more time with my children when they’re on school holidays.

how well does it fit in with family life?

It can still be quite hectic in term times! Getting the children to Sunrise club and nursery, and then getting to a venue in time to set up for my first class can be quite challenging!

why did you decide to start a franchise business?

I chose to run a Sing and Sign business and the structure is a franchise. There are quite a few benefits to being a franchise business though. The business model is already established and so there isn’t a lot of legal stuff to think about. There are also other business owners that are already running similar businesses, and we have a great network to pass on ideas and let other know what works and what doesn’t.

what do you find are the drawbacks?

Even though I attended classes with my own children, it’s quite different having to learn all the songs well enough to sing in front of other people! It was quite a challenge to learn all the tunes and lyrics for all the different classes when I first started teaching. This gets easier though as each term progresses. There’s quite a bit

Supporting Your Child’s Language Development Top Tips from emily Sturman, Speech & Language Therapist In the UK over 1 MILLION Children and young people have some form of speech, language and communication difficulty. Children are surrounded by language and so speech and language difficulties impact most aspects of their everyday lives – interactions with families, attempts to make and keep friends, learning about their world and their education. The period from 8 to 24 months is one of the most important stages of language development because what takes place in a child’s early years can have a lasting influence on their health and well-being. You can support these early stages of language development by using the following top tips, that we use at ME Speech Therapy, in your own home.

T A L K

tell your child what is happening. Talk about what they are doing in play, E.g. ‘Teddy’s sleeping’ ‘You’re feeding. add gesture and visuals. Using gestures, such as pointing or signing, will help support your child understand new words and aid their attention and listening. Leave the TV off. Watching too much TV can get in the way of good listening and attention. Children should ideally have no more than 30 minutes of screen time a day. Always turn off the TV when no one is watching it. Keep it short. Use short phrases and language at the same level as your child to help them understand and copy your language.

& p

Parents are the best toy! Children quickly learn to self-explore during play but you are their favourite toy. Play interactive games together (pat a cake, washing and feeding teddy), sing nursery rhymes and share stories.

A

Listen and Repeat. Show you understand and help them learn new words by repeating what they have said and then adding another word. E.g. Child: “Want juice” Adult: “You want orange juice”. always get down to their level. Communication happens naturally when we are close together and looking at each other. Your child will enjoy your facial expressions and begin to learn how to use them.

Y

your child leads the play. Allow your child to choose the toys they want to play with, wait a few moments for them to start the play before you join in.

L

You are your child’s BeST teacher! This article was written by Emily Sturman, local speech and language therapist from ME Speech Therapy. To find out more, visit: www.mespeechtherapy.com To advertise call 0845 6439687 or e-mail info@timefortots.co.uk
