Winter 2017 Contents “I used to think being a kid at Christmas was the best thing ever, but it turns out having kids on Christmas is”

S

o very true! Having children around puts the magic and sparkle back into Christmas. There’s a whole host of Christmas themed activities and events to enjoy with your children this season, more than we’ve featured before I believe. Turn to page 11 for our Christmas What’s On guide to start planning your festive calendar. Our Events diary, starting on page 20, also features many Christmas events so take a look at that as well. In the hustle and bustle of modern life we need to make sure we take care of our children’s mental health as well as their physical health. Michelle from L is for Learning has written a super article for us, on page 34, with some simple tips for helping our children be more mindful and able to cope better with stressful and unexpected situations. I particularly like the ‘advent gratitude jar’ idea. I think we might try that in my household. The silent meal time sounds quite appealing too! Wishing you all a very merry Christmas and a wonderful new year. Until the spring....

Swansgate Giving Tree Helping Less Fortunate Children

in the Area this Christmas

E

ach Christmas, the Swansgate Giving Tree, in the Swansgate Shopping Centre in Wellingborough, helps less fortunate children in the area and it’s easy for you to get involved. Simply select a tag from the tree with a suggested gift idea, purchase the gift from a store in the Swansgate before attaching the tag and posting it in the drop box in the centre. The gifts will then be distributed by Home-Start in the community, brightening up the festive period for those less fortunate who may not receive a present this year. Home-Start helps families with young children all around the UK. They support them with advice and help as they learn to cope, improve their confidence and build better lives for their children. Experience The British Woodland Indoors... At West Lodge Farm Park

W

est Lodge Farm Park is situated on the outskirts of Desborough within easy reach from Peterborough, Northampton, and Leicester. The Dee family have been farming at West Lodge for 3 generations, opening the Rural Centre in 1995. West Lodge is a working farm with livestock, woods, fields, streams and machinery. The family have a mission to share their enthusiasm for the countryside, providing hands-on experiences for adults and children with animal handling experiences, pony rides, piglet racing and much more! On a mission to regenerate their Old Grain Barn, they have created an immersive, fully themed playscape which features an outstanding centrepiece – a giant hollow oak tree with an enchanting tree house looming from the upper branches. The tree top hideout not only provides a brilliant vantage point and lookout, but also a giant spiral-slide down to the forest floor. The centrepiece is surrounded by three woodland zones and an orchard zone, allowing children to seamlessly flow around the ‘woodland’ using net bridges, platforms, slides, stepping posts, a climbing

wall, and ledges. Every minute detail has been thought through to provide a truly authentic woodland experience, with inspiration taken from local farming connections, including young tree saplings, fruit harvesting, and natural, local stone quarrying. The Old Grain Adventure Barn is suitable for children of all ages, with a specially designed area for very young children which includes an interactive sensorfloor where babies can swish the fish and scatter the leaves! There is also space for parties which sit on a mezzanine floor, providing fantastic views of the impressive floor to ceiling playscape. Entry to the Adventure Barn is included in your entry price to the farm. During busy times a wristband timed system will be in operation to ensure everyone’s safety and enjoyment. For information, including the farm park’s opening hours, or to book tickets (a discount is given for online booking), visit:

Sat 2nd to Sat 13th January The Singing Mermaid at The Royal & Derngate

Continuing its tradition of creating engaging theatre for young audiences, Royal & Derngate brings to life the well-loved children’s story The Singing Mermaid in its Underground Studio this Christmas. This charming show tells the tale of the singing mermaid, who one day is tempted away from all her sea creature friends and her peaceful home at Silversands to join a travelling circus. The audiences love to hear her sing, but the poor mermaid was tricked! Instead of the swimming pool she was promised, she is kept in a small tank by the wicked circus master Sam Sly, and she soon longs to return to the freedom of the sea. Will she ever escape? And who will help her along the way? Through beautiful puppetry and performance, and with music by Barb Jungr, Royal & Derngate collaborate once again with Little Angel Theatre to bring Julia Donaldson and Lydia Monks’ enormously popular story, The Singing Mermaid, to life. Ideal for children under 7 and their families. Please note: Children aged 1+ will need a ticket for this production. www.royalandderngate.co.uk

Featured Class: Spanish Lingotots What is Spanish Lingotots?

A class which is interactive and fun, yet based on sound educational research. Learning is through songs, stories, games, drama and play. Children have so much fun they don’t realise they are learning! Our skills and expertise ensure everyone understands. We teach the adults who attend at the same time as the children and you don’t have to have any prior knowledge of a language. Trust us to lead the whole family through your language-learning journey with our tips on how to continue at home. We will never put you on the spot or ask anyone to speak until they are ready!

Talk us through a typical class

Every class has a theme and follows the same structure so that children become familiar with the routine and know what is coming next. It starts with introduction songs, then a recap of the previous week’s vocabulary through a game, introduction of new vocabulary (5 to 7 words on the week’s theme), a game, walking songs, reinforcement of the vocabulary, language with props (songs using instruments and scarves, a story, a craft and then finish off with ‘Twinkle Twinkle’ in Spanish.

What is the aim of your classes?

The classes introduce children to another language at a time when they are most open to it and take it in without question, just as they learn mother tongue. They help children understand the world and other cultures. Classes give them a head start for when they begin to learn more formally in KS2. You will be surprised at how quickly they will start saying words and singing the songs!

How do classes benefit children?

Research suggests that children who know two languages can gain an academic and social advantage over those who speak only one. Children have an amazing ability to learn language and this happens best when it is interactive, engaging and child-centered. Sessions will increase self esteem. Children love communicating in another language and classes encourage talk, imitation, play acting and sharing. They will prepare children for the future as competence in a foreign language is increasingly valued by universities.

What ages are the classes for?

6 months to 4 years in the weekly community classes and 6 months to 8 years in the weekend class.

When and where do you run classes?

Mondays: Nene Centre, Thrapston 1.30 – 2.30pm Wednesdays: The Growing Tree, Market Harborough 10 – 11am Thursdays: Leisure Centre, Market Harborough, 10 – 11am Fridays: Civic Centre, Burton Latimer 9.45 – 10.45am Saturdays: Civic Centre, Burton Latimer 9.30 – 10.30am (for children up to 8 years) I also teach in nurseries and do clubs in schools.

How long does each class last? 1 hour

How much does a class cost?

£5.75, which includes a booklet for the term containing each week’s vocabulary. It also includes weekly hints and tips to support parents with how to reinforce at home.

Mindfulness and Children By Michelle from L is for Learning

M

indfulness is simply the process of being aware of ourselves, our bodies and our environments. Encouraging children to be mindful can help them to better deal with stressful or emotive situations and encourage calmness, better focus and well-being. And it’s so easy to practice; it really is child’s play! So where do we start? To encourage a more mindful environment at home, we should allow time to:

1. Talk about emotions Children struggle to deal with difficult emotions, thinking they shouldn’t feel angry, sad etc. We need to teach children emotions and how to deal with them and let them know all emotions are normal. Ask them to link emotions to colour and weather.

2. Cultivate a sense of gratitude In our society we link possessions to happiness. Teach your children to be grateful for the things they have. Why not over the festive period have an advent gratitude jar and write down together something you are thankful for every evening and put it in the jar.

3. Have some quiet time Family life is hectic! We are constantly rushing from one activity to the next or glued to our electronic devices, responding to emails and checking social media. We never switch off. Think about having some quiet time together as a family. Maybe try a silent meal time once a week!

4. Meditate Here are 2 simple activities to introduce your child to meditation: Breathing bears An easy, calm way to encourage your child to meditate! Simply take your child’s favourite soft toy and encourage them to lie down with their bear on their tummy (parents can modelling doing this activity too!). Taking slow and deep breaths,

ask them to watch the bear moving up and down on their tummy as they breathe in silence for one minute. Ask them to notice any other thoughts or feelings that might come into their heads while they are doing this; can they push these thoughts and feelings away like they are blowing bubbles away? Super senses Encourage your child to imagine they are their favourite super hero; explain that all superheroes have special senses to help them to be super! Can they use their own super senses to explore their surroundings? Go through each sense and ask them to be super-tuned in to each (smell, sight, sound, touch (ask them to close their eyes and hand them an every day object to feel) and taste (again, with their eyes closed, give them a small sample of an every day food to taste without them knowing what it is). Closed eyes during this process (apart from sight!) can be helpful. This simple exercise allows children to tune in to their surroundings and be more present and aware of themselves within their environments.

5. Look after yourself This is the final and most important step. If you aren’t allowing yourself time to be mindful, how can encourage your children to do so. Take some pauses in your day, go for a walk, sit and read. If you are calmer, your child will be calmer. I hope you enjoy these activities and have a mindful Christmas.

Birth and Postnatal Doula

A doula is a constant birth companion for the mother and her partner (if she has one) for the duration of her labour and birth whether needed for a few hours or a much longer period.

For babies aged from birth to 1 year old

5 week course run by a qualified IAIM instructor Tuesdays & Thursdays at 10am at Rush 2The Den 16 Fitzwilliam Street, Rushden

Baby Reflexology & Baby Yoga Classes also available Please contact for more information

Women choose a doula to support them for many reasons: • It may be their first pregnancy and they would like a trained doula to help them with decision making and birth preferences. • They may have developed a fear of labour and birth (tokophobia). • Perhaps they had a difficult labour or an experience during a previous birth that is causing concern and anxiety in their current pregnancy. A doula will provide support to a woman’s birth partner by helping them feel informed and useful during the labour and birth. As your doula I will: • Meet with you 3 times before the birth of your baby • Support you through your labour and birth and stay with you after to ensure you feel relaxed and comfortable • Meet with you after your birth for a birth overview discussion Contact me today to arrange an initial discussion

Business Mum: Natasha Barstow Forever Living Products Name: Natasha Barstow Family: 2 children aged 5 and 1. Third child expected in January.

Business Name:

Forever Living Products

Describe your business:

It is a Network Marketing Business that I run from home under the umbrella of Forever Living. All I do is recommend world class Aloe Vera products to a small group of customers and coach others to build a successful business doing exactly the same.

How long have you been doing this?

I have been doing this alongside full time teaching since February 2017. I started it whilst on maternity leave with my second daughter.

Why did you decide to make a change?

I have always felt that there has to be a little more to life than working extremely hard helping other children achieve their goals rather than spending time with my own children. I want to be there for my girls more than I have been in the past 4 years. My third baby has a congenital heart problem which will be treated by open heart surgery in her first week of life so our world has changed and I want to be at home much more than I have been whilst still earning a good income for our family.

What do you like about running your own business?

I love the freedom the business gives me and the time. The time to choose what I do and when, the time to spend with my family when they need me and the time to work on my own self-development which I don’t feel I had working in a big school.

How well does it fit in with family life?

I love that I can fit in the business in the nooks and crannies of the day around teaching and the girls. When they go to bed in the evening I plan time in to work on different aspects of my business.

What do you find are the drawbacks of running your own business? Is there anything you would like to change? As long as I am organised with my time and plan out my week I don’t think there is anything I would change.

What advice would you give to other Mums thinking of starting a business? Look into what opportunities are available to you, find out what you are passionate about and work hard! Working consistently hard has allowed me to change my family’s future for the better. Why not take a step into the unknown and challenge yourself! It’s a very scary but exciting place to be! 45 Home-Start, Kettering, have had a fantastic, very busy and successful year with fundraising, with lots more events planned for the future. In September they organised a Golf Tournament with a 23 team, 18-hole 4 ball Texas Scramble played at Kettering Golf Club.

It was the inaugural Trevor Lloyd Golf Day, played for the Trevor Lloyd Memorial Trophy. The event raised £4,050 for Home-Start Kettering, which was Trevor’s favourite charity. There will be another Trevor Lloyd Golf Day on 14th September 2018. Contact Home-Start Kettering for details. The winning team – The Big Noses

Other fundraising events, including a Dragon Boat Race held at Wicksteed Park in September, raised £2,000 and an abseil from the Northampton Lift Tower in April raised £4268. Smaller events include regular Quiz Nights, Lent Lunches and a Wine Tasting evening.

Home-Start continue to need volunteers to help support our families. They train and support volunteers to spend 2/3 hours a week offering support to children and their families through home visits. They pride themselves in taking care of their volunteers, offering an informal chat to answer any questions you may have, a comprehensive training programme, careful matching with a family and regular ongoing support. In addition to looking for Home-Visiting Volunteers, they are also recruiting for people to join their Board of Trustees or to join Friends of Home-Start Kettering Area and help raise further, much needed funds. Home-Start can be contacted on 01536 484318 (9-2pm weekdays) Mobile: 07935 402179 (and leave a message if necessary) Email: homestartkettering@btconnect.com Registered Charity Number: 1114030
