Lumberjack Attack is back with axe-throwing thrills By Travis Mounts TSnews A last-minute addition to last year’s Sedgwick County Fair proved very popular, and so Lumberjack Attack is coming back to the fairgrounds this summer with its axe-throwing trailer. Charlene Barber of Garden Plain is part of this family-owned business, which was started by her brother-in-law in Broken Arrow, Okla., which is part of the Tulsa metro area. “He wanted something family-oriented and fun to do. And then it just caught on,” Barber said. The business debuted in Kingman last December and is open a few nights per week, and travels to a variety of events

like weddings, fairs and parties. Lumberjack Attack will be opening soon in Okmulgee, Okla., too. “We did really well at the Sedgwick County Fair,” Barber said. They took their trailer to Garden Plain’s Fourth of July party last year, just before the Fair. “It was fantastic. We’re excited to do both events again this year.” Barber said axe-throwing can become something of a lifestyle. “It’s fun. We can teach the younger kids how to throw. It’s a blast,” she said. Barber and her husband, Oman, run things up here. Her brother-in-law, Gene Barber, is the owner. For Charlene and Oman, Lumberjack Attack is a fun side hustle. Both continue their careers outside of axe-throwing.

Demo Derby offers heart-pumping fun

By Travis Mounts TSnews The smell of dirt and exhaust. The sound of revving engines and metal being crushed. Flying mud, big hits and near misses. That is what you will find at the annual Demolition Derby, one of the top draws at the Sedgwick County Fair. Once again, there will be two nights of action at the Fairgrounds Arena. A bigger, better and rougher Demolition Derby debuted in 2019, with bigger prize money and an extra night, and it has been a hit ever since. On Friday, July 22, the Figure 8 race will return. New this year will be frontwheel and rear-wheel classes on Friday night. For those who aren’t familiar with these events, a Figure 8 race is just what it

sounds like: drivers on a track shaped like the number 8, with potential crashes in the center of the track. Drivers can try to avoid or create collisions, depending on their strategy. Saturday will feature a bolt-and-chain class, which is what most people think of when they think of demolition derby. This class allows modifications to the car so that it is better able to withstand the punishing hits delivered during the derby. They are basically stock cars (or street cars) but modified for safety. There also will be a bone stock class, with both full-size and compact car races. Sedgwick County Fair Association president Bret Albers explained that bone stock cars only minimal modifications. “Basically, you go get Grandma’s car and drive it out there,” he said. Be sure to get your grandmother’s permission first, of course.

Where & When

Demo Derby Fairgrounds Arena

Friday, July 22 • 7 p.m. Saturday, July 23 • 7 p.m. Advance tickets $13 adults | $11 children www.ourcountyfair.com Tickets at the gate $16 adults | $14 children There are pretty specific differences between the classes, but most fans do not care about that. They just want to see some wild action and great hits between cars, and that is what they will get on back-to-back nights.

“It’s been a really good event,” Albers said about the Demo Derby. “It’s one of our main anchors.” As in 2021, the area between the rodeo arena and the staging area to the west will be closed to the public. Attendees who want to sit in the south bleachers will need to walk around the east end of the arena. Significant prize money helps draw drivers from across the area and from other states. The more cars that enter, the more races there are and the more bang attendees get for their buck. Action starts at 7 p.m. both evenings. Gates open at 5 p.m. Advance tickets are $13 for adults and $11 for children ages 12 and under. They can be purchased in advance on the Sedgwick County Fair website, www.ourcountyfair.com. Tickets can be bought at the gate for $16 for adults and $14 for children.

New owners of longtime food vendor are well-known to the Fair By Travis Mounts TSnews

One longtime food vendor has been sold to another longtime food vendor, and customers likely won’t notice any changes. M&M Concessions and owners Mike and Melanie Ossman have for years been serving up roasted corn and cherry limeades to long lines of people at the Sedgwick County Fair. They are now owners of Aussie Cakes, the bright orange food trailer with funnel cakes, onion blossoms and Navajo tacos. For the Ossmans, the Sedgwick County Fair is a longtime tradition. They have been coming to the Fair for about 25 years. “Mike and I can’t remember the first year we did it,” Melanie said. Mike’s father bought the corn roaster in 1996 to supplement his retirement income. Mike and Melanie took over the business in 2010. The Ossmans and Aussie Cakes’ previ-

ous owners, Buster and Cheryl Johnson, have been talking about the sale for some time. The deal was completed in December. “It’s going to be the same trailer that was there,” Mike said. “We’ll keep things exactly the same.” Melanie said that the cherry limeades the M&M Concessions are known for will now be available at Aussie Cakes, too. “Those things go faster more than anything. It’s the exact same recipe my dad came up with 25 years ago,” Mike said. The Johnsons will continue helping out during the Fair, as well. The Sedgwick County Fair will be the first event with the Ossmans as the new owners. It has been an amicable deal, and one that will allow the Johnsons to move into retirement. The Ossmans are excited to expand their relationship with the Fair, and say they have a great relationship with the Fair. “We always look forward to going to the Sedgwick County Fair,” Mike said.

The Methodists are known for their chicken and noodles, or you can have a taco salad and homemade pie. They also offer breakfast items. D’Mario’s Pizza A favorite in Cheney all year, D’Mario’s is a favorite during the Sedgwick County Fair, as well. Grab a slice as you make your way across the fairgrounds. D&J Pronto Pup You don’t have to wait for the Kansas State Fair for this favorite. Get yours today, and remember – a Pronto Pup is NOT a corn dog! Delano 4-H Club Another longtime favorite at the Fair, this booth features Sno-cones from the 4-H kids who hail from the original west Wichita – the former town called Delano.

2022 Sedgwick County Fair Guide M&M Concessions It’s just not summer without an ear of corn in your hand from the Ossmans. In addition to roasted corn, enjoy handmade limeades and lemonades. Aussie Cakes Nothing screams “county fair” like a funnel cake topped with any number of toppings, or you can be a traditionalist and just go with powdered sugar. Have an Onion Blossom, or try their Navajo tacos. Squat & Gobble Barbeque treats – including turkey legs big enough to feed two – are what you’ll find here. Squat & Gobble has become a fan favorite over the years. Western Sedgwick County Saddle Club WSCA will be serving up eats and drinks, including hamburgers and hot dogs, during Thursday night’s Ranch Rodeo and on Friday and Saturday during the Demolition Derby events. Concession stands are located in the northwest corner of the Fairgrounds Arena.

Kandy’s Koffee You can get a hot cup of java if you like, but there’s so much more available, including fruit smoothies that are perfect on a hot summer day, plus brewed and fruit teas, and hot and cold chai. Wok Hei Noodle House Stir fry fresh vegetables with noodles or rice, topped off with their own finishing sauce. The marinated chicken breast is a specialty. They proved to be a great new addition to the Fair in 2019. Ken N Barbie’z Rollin Diner This food truck has been a regular in several area communities. Parade to kick off 2022 Fair

There is no better way to start off the Sedgwick County Fair than with a parade. This year’s parade will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 20. Parade line-up starts at 5 p.m. in the Cheney High School parking lot. The parade will move south on Main Street, from Sixth Avenue to the railroad tracks at Santa Fe. Over the history of the Fair, the parade has been a kick-off event when the Fair started on Thursday, a highlight of the final day on Saturday, and held somewhere in between the start and finish. A few years ago, Fair organizers moved the parade from its longtime position on Thursday to Wednesday evening, and it has been a rousing success as the kick-off event ever since – similar to the Sundown Parade for the Wichita River Festival. Groups, individuals and commercial businesses are all more than welcome to march, ride, or organize floats. Taking part is as easy as showing up in the Cheney High School parking lot between 5 and 6 p.m. on Wednesday, July 20. To sign up early, or for answers to questions, contact Carla Ewy at 316-772-1325 or carlaewy1@gmail.com, or Kassie Gile at 316-640-4043 or kgile31@gmail.com. Parade participants are reminded that they are not to throw candy from vehicles Sedgwick County Fair Parade or floats. Instead, those giving out candy are asked to walk alongside their entries. Wednesday, July 20 • 6:30 p.m. For spectators, the parade starts at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday and will proceed south Main Street, Cheney down Main Street.

Have a cold one at the beer garden Fairgoers who would like to enjoy a cold beer on a hot night at the Sedgwick County Fair will be able to do so. The Sedgwick County Fair beer garden will be back for a third year. It is located on the edge of the Open Air Arena and will be open on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings. Participants will have to stay in the designated beer garden area, and identification will be required. Only people aged 21 or older will be allowed in the area. Beer gardens have become popular attractions at events like the Fair, including at several fall festivals in this area. The rise of beer gardens has coincided with a growing interest in craft beer. Adult beverages and other concessions will also be on sale during evening events at the Grandstand Arena, including the Ranch Rodeo on Thursday and the Demolition Derby on Friday and Saturday.

Carnival nights are a big part of the Sedgwick County Fair By Travis Mounts TSnews

Nearly every year since the early 1990s, the Pride of Texas Carnival has been as much a part of the Fair as the parade, blue ribbons and strawberry limeades. Those carnival lights and sounds are back for all four nights of the 2022 Sedgwick County Fair. Pride of Texas will bring a new ride to this year’s Fair. The Super Shot is a 100-foot tall free fall drop tower. Riders must be at least 48 inches tall. The tower drops you toward the ground. Riders are secured safely with an overthe-shoulder harness. The gondola reaches more than 40 miles per hour before being slowed by a fail-safe electromagnetic braking system. Ride bracelets give you the best value at the carnival, and you can save money if you buy them in advance. Those who buy wristbands in advance through www.ourcountyfair. com will pay $25 through July 19. During the Fair, the wristbands are $30 per night. To take advantage of the pre-sale discount, go to www.ourcountyfair. com. Those who purchase online will need to pick up their vouchers at the Sedgwick County Fair office on the northwest corner of the fairgrounds. The office will open at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, and will be open all four days of the Fair. Once you have picked up your vouchers, you can take them to the Pride of Texas Carnival ticket booth and get your wristband. Wristband hours are 6-11 p.m. each night. Rides will stay open until 11 p.m. through Friday and until midnight on Saturday, but only individually-purchased ride tickets will be honored after the bracelets expire on Saturday. Riders must be at least 36 inches tall and follow all posted rules at the carnival. There are no in-person advance sales.

Ranch rodeo shows off daily work of ranchers By Travis Mounts TSnews

Where & When

Ranch Rodeo

Thursday, July 21 • 7 p.m. Fairgrounds Arena Advance tickets $7 adults | $5 children www.ourcountyfair.com Tickets at the gate $10 adults | $8 children

Fairgoers who want to get an idea of what life on a ranch is really like should attend the Sedgwick County Fair Ranch Rodeo, which will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 21. The Ranch Rodeo features three team competitions that highlight the tasks ranchers actually complete while working on today’s ranches. This will be the fifth year for the event. The event features four-person teams with a maximum of 10 teams. A number of the participants even compete on a ranch rodeo circuit, although it is not as well-known as regular rodeo circuits. That is part of the attraction, said organizer Matthew Haukap. “It’s not as common as a normal rodeo,” he said. “People may never have seen a ranch rodeo. The people who compete are working cowboys.”

Last year’s field included a Cheney team. Most of the other competitors come from within 100 miles and hail from places like Mount Hope, Medicine Lodge and the Flint Hills. The line-up of teams is still being completed. The first of the rodeo’s three competitions is ranch bronc riding, an event that also appears in conventional rodeos. The difference is that Fair competitors will use normal working saddles, not special competition saddles. It’s to simulate when they’re training a new horse who’s never had a saddle on. The horse bucks sometimes. It’s about who can ride better or longer. In the second event, teams will compete to see who can sort individual animals out of a herd of steers the fastest. The final event is another test of cowboys’ ability to handle cattle. There will be a truck with a trailer in the arena, and the four team members will “turn out” two steers.

One steer will be roped, tied down, and marked with chalk, to simulate giving it a shot. The other steer will be roped, loaded into the trailer, and unroped. Time will stop when both tasks have been completed. Fairgoers aged 12 and younger can compete in a calf scramble. Whoever manages to snatch a ribbon off a calf ’s tail will win a prize. Those interested in competing in the rodeo should contact the stock company, Kraft Rodeo. Contact information can be found at www.kraftrodeo.com. The Ranch Rodeo is Thursday, July 21, at the Fairgrounds Arena, with action starting at 7 p.m. Advance tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for kids ages 12 and under. Tickets can be purchased in advance online at www.ourcountyfair. com. Click the “Event Tickets” tab on the left. Tickets at the gate will be $10 for adults and $8 for children.

4-H shows highlight youths’ skills By Travis Mounts TSnews If you live in the city or are a “townie” in one of the area’s suburban or rural communities, you may not know much about life on a farm. Today’s 4-H is much, much more than farm-related projects, but farming remains an integral part of the 4-H experience for many youth. The competitive 4-H shows at the Sedgwick County Fair can give you a glimpse at the work that has gone into these projects over the past year. The shows are free and open to anyone who would like to watch. They include the horse show, beef and dairy cows, meat and dairy goats, swine, and sheep. Judging for rabbits, poultry and hand pets is done as 4-H members enter their animals, rather than in competitive shows like the larger animals. The dog show will take place on Saturday, July 10, at Sedgwick County Extension in Wichita. Judging for 4-H also takes place in a number of other events, including arts and crafts, food, clothing, aerospace and rocketry, woodworking, horticulture and crops, flowers, forestry, geology, electricity, fiber arts, photography, educational display, home environment and shooting sports. Entries in all of those categories go on display after judging. You can see them in the Farm Bureau Building and the Cheney Recreation Building, which sit side-by-side on the north end of the Fairgrounds. The rabbit and poultry barn are in the same area. Following is a list of the shows for the

larger animals. All the shows take place at the 4-H pavilion on the southeast corner of the Fairgrounds, with the exception of one: the 4-H horse show, which is held at the Fairgrounds Arena at the far south end of the Fairgrounds.

$500 prize awaits best softball team

By Travis Mounts TSnews

The annual Sedgwick County Fair slow-pitch softball tournament will be held July 20-23, and now is the time for teams to sign up. Once again, there will be two divisions: men’s wood bat, and co-ed. There is a $500 grand prize. Both the championship teams and second place teams will receive T-shirts as well. There is a $100 entry fee per team. The tournament format depends on the number of teams signed up. Balls will be provided for both divisions. The softball field is located right in the heart of the Sedgwick County Fairgrounds. On the west and south sides are the food booths and many commercial vendors. The Open Air Arena is right across the way, and the live acts provide

a soundtrack to evening games. The carnival lights shine through from right field. And beyond the left field fence you will find 4-H exhibits, as wells as rabbits and poultry. With lots of trees, you can find a shady place to rest while enjoying a softball game. To register your team, call Megan Howell at 316-680-9302 or email meganhowell356@gmail.com.

Molly Neeley is back with new lineup By Sam Jack TSnews

Molly Neeley is back at the Sedgwick County Fair for the second year in a row. She will be playing the Open Air Stage at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. This time around, the vocalist has a different backing band: Cousins Rudy Love, Jr., and Rachelle Love will be playing keyboard and drums, respectively. “Rudy Love, Jr., plays pretty prominently here in Wichita,” Neeley said. “He and I have known each other since high school. I’ve been playing with a few different bands, because I’ve been playing for about seven years or so, and I just want to work with as much local talent as possible.” Neeley recently played a gig at Grace Hill Winery in Whitewater. Shortly before the Fair, she will be part of the lineup for the Hopping Gnome Brewery’s anniversary block party. Neeley is planning to perform a wide

spectrum of covers, including folk songs, acoustic pop, classic rock hits, and Top 40 tracks. When she isn’t performing at local venues, Neeley keeps busy as an elementary school music teacher in Wichita. She was at Bostic Elementary and will be transferring to Colvin Elementary for the coming school year. “I really love teaching music, but it’s nice to be able to perform it in my own outlets,” Neeley said. Groove 42 to play Thursday night

By Sam Jack TSnews

Thursday evening’s featured act at the Open Air Arena will be the well-known Wichita cover band Groove 42. The five-piece group includes four vocalists, allowing for some neat vocal harmonies. The lineup is Sean Borst on drums and vocals; Bret Goter on keyboard, trumpet, harmonica and vocals; Ebony Deschaine on keyboard, saxophone and vocals; John Probst on bass and vocals; and Jace Wilbert on guitar. “In terms of the kind of music, it’s a really wide variety,” Borst said. “We do classic rock: a lot of Journey, things from that era. We also do a lot of current country music, some hip-hop stuff, some top 40. Basically, anything that’s very danceable.” The band formed more than 10 years ago, when Borst, Goter and Deschaine split from another still-extant Wichita

This is the group’s first time at the Fair, but they are frequently to be found at Wichita-area clubs such as YaYa’s, Margarita’s and the Brickyard. Borst, Goter and Deschaine all teach music in Wichita Public Schools, and Probst is an instrument repair technician for the district. “I use that like a recruiting thing, to urge students to continue with it: You can do this, and when you’re older, you can make money doing it. It’s possible to do,” Borst said.

Air City Rock to play the Fair on Friday By Sam Jack TSnews

Friday evening’s featured musical entertainment is Air City Rock, a cover band based in Wichita. Air City Rock focuses on pop rock, especially tracks from the 1990s and 2000s. “We do ‘Mister Brightside,’ by the Killers, all the way to ‘3 AM’ by Matchbox 20; or from ‘All The Small Things’ to Tom Petty, Green Day, Sublime. It’s all that kind of stuff,” said Isaac Pearson, who plays rhythm guitar and is one of the band’s three vocalists. The rest of the lineup includes Phil Martin, lead guitar; Blake Ester, bass and vocals; and Scott Spriggs, drums and vocals. “We started this probably about 10 years ago,” Pearson said. “I moved here from the West Coast about that time, and I actually met these guys off of Craigslist back in the day. We all play in other bands, too. Air City Rock is a place

we can come together, have a good time, and play the songs we grew up listening to and learning as teenagers ourselves.” This will be Air City Rock’s first time at the Fair, but they have played a lot of events around Wichita, including many local bars and clubs. “With a cover band, it’s a different mentality than a band that plays originals,” Pearson said. “When you’re an originals band, you want to play your own songs and engage people that way. When you’re doing covers, it’s really much more about

the audience. From a cover perspective, you’re there to entertain people with nostalgia, rather than something they need to sit and actively listen to. When people know the song already, they can enjoy it

on whatever level they like. As long as the vibe is good, everyone’s having a good time.” Follow Air City Rock on Facebook at www.facebook.com/aircityrock.

CANNING Paula Webb, Superintendent – 316-722-2853, webbwichita@sbcglobal.net Check in: Wednesday, July 20, 6:00-9:00 p.m. or Thursday, July 21, 8:00-10:00 a.m. Judging: Thursday, July 21, 10:30 a.m. Check out: Saturday, July 23, 8:00 p.m. 1. Eligible entries must be preserved in a clear regulation canning jar. Recommended jars should be the same brand as ring & seal, but not required. Ball®, Kerr™, Atlas, Mainstays, and Golden Harvest are some examples of jars & lids specially designed for home canning. Always use the right size jar for what the recipe calls for. Rings must be rust free. 2. All preserved foods must be prepared within a one-year (1 year) period prior to the judging date. 3. Preserved food entries must have the following information on a 3” x 5” card stating: NAME OF PRODUCT, DATE PRESERVED, TYPE OF PACK (HOT OR COLD), PROCESSING METHOD AND TIME, POUNDS OF PRESSURE (FOR LOW ACID FOOD), ALTITUDE WHERE PRODUCT WAS PROCESSED. 4.RECIPES are required EXCEPT where otherwise noted. 5. Recipes should be put on back of an index card or a separate index card stapled to the first card. 6. Your card will be under your exhibit after judging and will be returned to you at the end of the Fair. 7. Using the guidelines from the National Center for Home Food Preservation, visual inspection will be used for the most part for judging. Jars may need to be opened when: differences among entries are too small for visual judging only or when spoilage is suspected. Any item opened will have a small black mark on the lid to denote that it has been opened and no longer safe for consumption. Entries must be in compliance with current USDA guidelines. Visit http://nchfp.uga.edu or contact your local extension office for safe food preservation practices. 8. Do not put any labels or decorations on the jars. Judges need to see the product through the glass jar and should not know who entered it. QUALITY CRITERIA Safety is of utmost importance. Any entry not in compliance with judging guidelines or exhibiting spoilage must be disqualified. Remember to check the altitude where you live and use that in determining the right time for processing. Failure to adjust for altitude will lead to under processed food which could lead to botulism. Use your trusted resources and always use the correct processing time. Only use recipes from trusted sources such as USDA, K-State publications, home preserving equipment or ingredient manufacturers. It is best not to modify a recipe by adding thickeners, rice, pasta or any other ingredient which may alter the acidity. Acidifying of tomatoes is necessary. Refer to your canning book. It is best not to use fancy packs. When using the new appliances for home canning they must be used according to their instructions and recipes. FILLED JAR Headspace must correspond to instructions from the reference guides listed. The top of the finished recipe or liquid covering produce must provide adequate headspace as stated in approved guidelines. Bands should remain on the jars while in transit to the fair event. Bands will be removed to determine if the headspace is correct then replaced for product display.

HEAT PROCESS used to heat process food must comply with current preserving guidelines as stated in the approved reference guides. The boiling water process for high-acid food and pressure process for low-acid food are the only recommended methods to preserve food in jars for shelf storage. Dirty Gentlemen play music that ‘makes you feel good’ By Sam Jack TSnews

The Dirty Gentlemen play music that “makes you feel good,” according to band member Carlos Cervantes. “You can have a rough day at work, or a rough day with the girlfriend, or whatever it is. Then you just hear some music, and it seems to take everything away and make everything better,” Cervantes said. “I think that’s why musicians start playing to begin with: Music just makes you feel good, and it takes you to another place.” The Dirty Gentlemen will be featured at 9 p.m. Saturday in the Open Air Arena. In addition to Cervantes, who sings and plays bass, the lineup includes Jeff Dreiling on lead vocals, Phil Bollig on guitar and vocals, and Ron Gilbert on drums. The band plays covers from the 1970s through the present day, including country, pop, and a little bit of everything. “We’ve all been in bands for like the last 15 years, and this band has been together for four or five years,” Cervantes said. “We’ve played in other bands, together, so this is kind of the culmination of a lot of other bands.” The Gentlemen like to add a rock tinge to their covers, even if they’re playing a

country tune. Bollig and Cervantes add vocal harmonies and take their turns as lead vocalist to give Dreiling a break during long sets. Search for “The Dirty Gentlemen ICT” on Facebook to land on the band’s page.

Sign up for the Run to Cheney

The annual Run to Cheney, a longtime event at the Sedgwick County Fair, will take place on Saturday, July 23, with two races. The 5-kilometer race will begin at 8 a.m. The 1-mile race will start at 9 a.m. For the second straight year, the start and finish area will be at Cheney High School, 800 N. Marshall. The cost is $20 per person. Registrations will be accepted until race day, but you must sign up by July 14 to be guaranteed a T-shirt. Awards and snacks are included with your registration. You can register online using the QR code with this story or sign up the day of the race. The number of participants last year was down slightly in the first event after COVID, but organizers hope to have at least 100 runners in 2022. “We’d love to have people out. The more, the merrier,” said Todd Hague, one of the race’s organizers. The race benefits the Cheney Alumni Association’s scholarship fund. Racers under 18 need to have parental permis-
