President’s Letter

As we usher in the start of a new year and reflect on the accomplishments of this past year, I am truly encouraged by the exceptional improvements the Club continues to make to its service and amenities through strong financial stewardship and a clear vision for success for current and future members. In early February, the Board of Governors and Senior Professional Staff will meet to focus on these ongoing improvements during a two-day strategic planning retreat. The retreat will focus on specific goals for improving the facilities, services, and staff experience over the next five years. In our continued efforts to be transparent, the final strategic plan will be made available to the membership, and the Board will update the plan annually to allow members to see how we are progressing. The plan will be our guide that transcends leadership changes and ensures we are achieving our day-to-day excellence in the execution of our values and mission. As always, the Board and Management Staff welcome feedback on the plan when it becomes available.

The Board would like to extend a special invitation to our annual Founder’s Day Q&A session on Thursday, February 13, at 6 p.m. This session is not just an opportunity to ask questions about the proxy statement proposals, but also a chance to be part of the decision-making process. Your participation is crucial as it will help shape the future of the Club. In addition, the Club’s committees complete an annual report for the membership that summarizes the prior year’s accomplishments, goals and challenges across all areas of the Club and the Club’s audited financials. The Annual Report will be made available online at the end of February.

Golf Performance Center & Pickleball Facility

The Locker Room and 19th Hole renovation and tennis improvements made last year, in addition to the various prior projects completed, were the culmination of years of planning at the Committee and Board level, feedback through member surveys, and a vision from the Board and our Senior Management team on how to continue to improve the member experience for current and future generations. As represented by the renderings on pages 6–7, the Board of Governors is moving forward with our campus improvement plan by adding the Golf Performance Center (GPC) and Pickleball facility. Pickleball players (“picklers”) now total more than 25 million nationwide and growing, equaling, and potentially surpassing the number of tennis players. Industry insight anticipates pickleball to exceed 35 million players in the next 3-5 years, making it clear that this activity is not a fad and is now an integral part of country club amenities. Of equal importance, the Golf Performance Center will become a significant hub of member activity. Having personally toured several facilities over the years, we expect the GPC to be an opportunity for our members to improve their games and a significant opportunity for small group private events, new golf social events, and a new venue for tournament parties. This exciting project is planned to start on or around June 2 and will take roughly 12 months to complete.

Mike Kelley President

Project Funding and Capital Reserve Balance

The Club has been fortunate with the infusion of capital from the Navy Easement arrangement for the past five years, leading to a transformation of the Club grounds. We’ve invested more than $30 million since 2018 in our physical plant and as of the end of the year, we will have a capital reserve balance of $5.15 million. The pricing for the GPC and Pickleball facility project, including a healthy contingency, is expected to be $6.9 million. Even after this project, we plan to maintain a capital reserve balance of $1.85 million. By November 2025, the Club will be debt-free and still carry a $1.7 million line of credit for additional emergency liquidity. This financial stability ensures that we can continue to provide the high standards our members expect, while also planning for the future.

With the Club receiving its final payment from the Navy and the City of Jacksonville last March and following the GPC and Pickleball facility project next year, it will return to a more normal improvement schedule moving forward. It is hard to believe how far we have come in the last eight years. Nearly every part of the campus has been touched and enhanced.

As a result, demand for membership continues to stay elevated, as evident in our increasing initiation fees for new members beginning this April and the growing wait list, which now exceeds one year.

We are eagerly looking forward to our informal and annual meetings in February and March, respectively, as well as the opportunity to share the final strategic plan shortly after that. These meetings are a chance for us to hear from you and share more about the Club’s plans and progress. If you have any questions or comments about your experience, please do not hesitate to reach out. We value your feedback and are committed to ensuring that the Club continues to meet your expectations.

I wish you all a prosperous start to the New Year.

Respectfully,

Renovations to the locker rooms and 19th Hole were completed last year.

NEW YEAR’S TENNIS RESOLUTIONS 2025

Fight for the Ideal

Contact-point

In order to swing effectively, in balance, you have to hit the ball at an ideal distance to your body. This is called “your ideal contact point.” It is the “sweet spot,” the place where the swing feels effortless and smooth. As a player, you have to understand exactly where this spot is in all your strokes and fight to hit the ball there every time. After all, your opponent’s goal is to force you to meet the ball outside this “ideal spot.” Do not make it easy for them.

Have a Clear Target for Every Shot

If you do not know where you are going, you will never get there. That is the same on the tennis court. Focusing on hitting the forehand crosscourt is not the same as focusing on hitting it with topspin, six feet over the net, three

Joe Mattingly Director of Tennis

feet from the baseline and close to the sideline. A clear target will force you to constantly adjust, helping you to polish your shots. With a general target, you are just going through the motions.

Hit the Ball as it Rises or at the Top of the Bounce

One of the most important tactical concepts in tennis is taking time away from the opponent, and the best way to do this is by hitting the ball from inside the baseline close to the bounce. The shorter the flight time, the less time the opponent has to react. The problem is that hitting the ball from inside the court is difficult. It requires exceptional perception and movement skills, which can only be developed by constantly focusing on hitting the ball on the rise.

Find the Balance Between Consistency and Power

Exceptional play requires both power and control. You have to learn to play automatically at the fastest possible speed at which you can control your shots, and the only way to get there is to work on it every time you are on the court. In other words, if you are making all your shots, swing faster. If you are missing too much, add spin – still missing, slow the swing down. Practice should be a constant search for this thin line where power and control are in balance.

Play every Point as if it Were Match Point

When it comes to intensity and focus, there should be no difference between practice and match play. Ideally, you should play every rally as if it were a match point, so that when you are playing the match point you can play it like any other rally. Demand your best effort every time. Once this becomes a habit, you will automatically be ahead of most of the competition.

TRAINER TIP:

How Long Does It Take to Get Stronger?

If you’re new to strength training, you may notice significant improvements in as little as two weeks. However, if you’re an experienced athlete with a history of resistance training, building additional strength may take more time and effort.

Should I Lift Heavier Weights or Do More Reps?

If your goal is to build strength, lifting heavier weights is often more effective. Heavier weights challenge your muscles to adapt quickly, leading to increased strength. On the other hand, increasing your reps focuses on boosting muscular endurance rather than pure strength. Choose your approach based on your specific fitness goals.

Can I Get Stronger Without Weights?

Yes, you can build strength without weights but incorporating them can significantly enhance your results. Weights allow you to target muscles through a wider range of angles and movement patterns, many of which are difficult or impossible to replicate with bodyweight exercises alone.

With the right balance of effort, training, recovery and nutrition, you can build a stronger and healthier body. Commit to the process, stay consistent and watch your strength grow! Click here to view the

NORMATEC COMPRESSION THERAPY

Cost: $15 per 30-minute session

Normatec Compression Therapy uses air-filled sleeves or boots to apply a pulsing pressure to your body. This type of therapy helps:

• Improve blood flow for better circulation.

• Reduce swelling by stimulating your lymphatic system.

• Speed up recovery by flushing out waste like lactic acid from muscles.

The device works by compressing and releasing air in a wave-like motion, starting at the far end of your limb and moving upward. Originally created for medical use, it’s now popular with athletes for recovery and reducing soreness.

Treat yourself to this non-invasive, beneficial self-care for your body.

Available by appointment only. Contact Tracy Markley at 904.388.2664 x144 or on her cell at 904.472.3880 to schedule your appointment.
