BOG

FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Members: Happy New Year! 2018 was an exciting and busy year for the Club, and it appears 2019 will be the same. Here are some of the upcoming highlights: POW WOW RENOVATION As of this writing, the pool project is on time and on budget. If that continues, we expect to begin the Pow Wow renovation project in early summer. As most of you are aware, this will be a comprehensive project that includes a complete kitchen renovation with all new equipment, and a renovation and interior replacement of the Pow Wow room itself. The Board and House Committee have enlisted the services of HINT/Harris (Atlanta) to provide design services for the space.

provide player hospitality and perform roles on the golf course such as range attendants, marshals, and forecaddies. Our tournament co-chairs are Nick Napoleon and Leslie Sirbaugh. Please contact either of them if you are interested in helping the Club shine in this important event (NNapoleon@ghgins.com, lsirbaugh@comcast.net). DONATIONS Thank you to those who have already provided a sponsorship or donation. Several of our vendors and members have stepped up in a big way, but we need more help to make this event spectacular. We’ve setup a tax deductible donation option through the Jacksonville Sports Council, which has a 501(c)(3) setup to accept them. If you’d like to take advantage of deducibility, please contact Greg Sheara at the Club.

THE USGA IS COMING TO TCC U.S. WOMEN’S AMATEUR FOUR-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP UPDATE

We are four short months away from hosting the 5th annual U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball Championship. During the one-week period of the Championship, from Wednesday, April 24 – Wednesday, May 1 and periods leading up to the tournament, normal activity at the Club will be disrupted. Highlighted below are the changes to Club operations during the Championship.

GOLF

• Golf carts will be restricted to cart paths only starting April 9. On Saturdays and Sundays, April 13, 14, 20, and 21, walking will be permitted prior to 2:00 pm. • The golf course will be closed starting Wednesday, April 24. The course will reopen at 10:30 am on Thursday, May 2 following the completion of the Championship. • The golf course will see little impact during the preparation of the course ahead of the Championship. The rough will be kept at a 2” height and other normal maintenance practices will continue.

LOCKER ROOMS

• The Men’s Locker Room will be transformed into the Players’ Locker Room during the Championship. We kindly ask that all members who have a large locker, please remove their belongings by the end of the day Saturday, April 20. Starting Sunday, April 21, Club staff will bag, label and store everyone’s items until the end of the Championship. We will need close to 100 lockers made available for the players that week. • During the Championship, the Men’s Locker Room will be restricted to Players and USGA female staff only. The Club’s other restroom facilities will be available for member and spectator use. • The Ladies’ Locker Room will be used for USGA Men’s officials. The Ladies’ Locker Room will be closed starting at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, April 23.

4

JA N UA RY/ F E B R UA RY 2 0 1 9

BAG STORAGE

• We will need to find some room for players who wish to keep their bags at the Club overnight. Should you need your bags to play at other local clubs during closure and wouldn’t mind keeping them there for the week, we would greatly appreciate the extra space.

DINING

• The Pow Wow Room will remain open for member dining throughout the Championship. It will operate under normal hours of operation daily. • The River Room will be closed for the duration of the Championship, starting Monday, April 22. • It is anticipated that the new pool and outdoor dining area will be completed by the start of the Championship. If so, the pool and riverfront dining will be available for member use during the week. • The 19th Hole will be the site for the USGA home office. The 19th Hole will close to member dining following lunch service on Thursday, April 18. It will reopen under normal hours of operation on Thursday, May 2.

CARD PLAY

• Due to space restrictions, we will not be able to accommodate card playing, including Duplicate Bridge, beginning Tuesday, April 23. Card playing will resume on Thursday, May 2.

FITNESS

• The Fitness Center will be open with normal hours of operation. • The Group Exercise Studio will be used as the medical office during the Championship, and will be shut down starting Wednesday, April 24. The last group classes will be held Tuesday April 23, and will resume on Thursday morning, May 2.

TENNIS

• The Tennis Center will be used for volunteer headquarters, so activity in and around the Pro Shop will be very high. The tennis courts will still be open for member use. Ladies’ team tennis will still occur and an adjusted clinic schedule will be posted by the tennis professional staff for that week.

PARKING

• The Club is typically challenged during large events and this will be no different. • The Club’s pool and tennis parking lots (to the right and left as you enter the grounds) will be restricted to players, players’ families, and USGA officials only, starting Thursday, April 25 through Monday, April 29. i. On Thursday, members may park in the main lots after 5:00 pm only. ii. On Friday and Sunday, members are restricted from parking in the main lots all day.

iii. On Saturday, members may park in the main lots after 5:00 pm only. iv. As the field of players gets reduced during match play, we will open up the parking lots for member access throughout the day, beginning on Tuesday. • Members and volunteers will be accessing a remote lot behind the driving range. Shuttle service will be provided by Club staff and volunteers beginning at 5:00 am daily. • Credentials will be provided to the players and USGA officials for parking.

SIGNAGE

• A majority of the Club’s rooms will be repurposed for the week of the Championship. USGA signage will be prominently displayed throughout the grounds to aid members, players, and guests to the various places they need to go. Please be conscientious of the signs and rooms before you enter, as some rooms have been changed to gender-specific rooms. On behalf of the Championship Committee, we want to thank the membership for allowing these great players from around the country to participate here at Timuquana. While the Championship will cause some disruption in normal activities around the Club, we are excited to host this prestigious event and showcase our fine golf course and Club.

POOL

POOL CONSTRUCTION UPDATE

The new TCC pool is really starting to take form! Throughout the fall, the contractor has moved efficiently through the demolition and formation of the pool. With the shell nearly complete, we’ll start to see more details come together over the next few months. Tile work, pool equipment installation, restroom remodeling, pool bath pavilion, final construction, and the formation of the new bar and kitchen, will all start to come together quickly throughout February. As this newsletter arrives in your mailboxes, the pool is on schedule Greg Sheara, CCM and on budget. We anticipate completion of the pool in early General Manager April, and the official opening in the middle of the month. gsheara@timuquana.net

HARD HAT TOURS As the major construction gets finished, we want to invite members who are interested in the construction progress to visit and tour the site. Hard Hat Tours will be available on Saturday, February 16 and Saturday, March 9 from 2:00–4:00 pm. Feel free to come by anytime during those hours for a 30-minute tour of the site. Please call the front desk to RSVP so we know how many hard hats to plan for!

In the new year, we will continue to find new ways to give you the best experience possible. There’s just one word that comes to mind when thinking about the 2018 Tennis Member-Guest weekend, and that is WOW! This was by far the best-attended, played in, watched, and cheered event, we’ve seen here at the Club. First off – big thanks to all the members who played and their guests, too. Without you, this wouldn’t have been such a special weekend. We also want to thank all of you who came out and watched all of the great tennis action.

GOLF NEWS Reflecting on golf, 2018 has been a wonderful year. Three of our members played in USGA events (Chloe Schiavone – U.S. Women’s Four-Ball; Bill Hardaker – U.S. Senior Amateur; and Ben Hayes – U.S. Mid-Amateur). All of our Timuquana tournaments were great fun and had terrific winners. That being said, it is time to create new memories in 2019! The time is now to plan on playing in events for Spring. It will be here before you know it. Due to the move of the Players Championship (new dates are March 14 – 17), as well as the USGA Women’s Four-Ball which will be played at TCC in late April, there are many changes to our Spring Calendar. First, Pow Wow will be played March 28–30. The reason I mention this is that entries have been mailed and sign up will be Tuesday, February 12. We will start taking entries at 7:00 am,

but folks will be in line much earlier. We will take the first 80 teams and establish an alternate list with the rest. Please let me know if you have questions about the sign up process, which is first-come – first-served that morning. Our Ladies’ Member-Member will be held on consecutive Thursdays – January 17 & 24. And ladies, please get your group together for the marquis event of the year, the Ladies’ Member-Guest, which will be played Thursday, March 7. Ladies may bring one or three guests for the MemberGuest. On Friday, January 18 there will be a Men’s One Day Member-Guest starting at 12:30 pm. There will be lunch before and dinner after play. This is a great way to show off your terrific golf course and Club! Please visit the website for the entry form

to enter the event or contact the Golf Shop at 904.389.0477. For the 28th year, the Underwood Cup Matches will be held at Timuquana February 18 & 19. The matches feature the 12 best amateurs, including Timuquana’s Ben Hayes, against the 12 best club professionals in the Greater Jacksonville area. On Sunday, February 17 the ContestantAm portion of the event will be played. The contestants are asked to bring two guests and we ask Timuquana members to round out their foursome. The cost is $80 and includes lunch, golf, prizes and hors d’oeuvres after play. Sign up in the Golf Shop!

FROST ON GREENS Save the Date Timuquana CounTry Club ladies' Golf member GuesT

FROM THE USGA

Frost is essentially frozen dew. Ice crystals visible on the outside of the plant can also form on the inside of grass blades. The grass plant, normally resilient to footsteps or cart traffic, becomes brittle and fragile when ice crystals form. Under the pressure of traffic, ice crystals puncture living plant tissues and rupture plant cells. Damage will not

appear right away, but it will show up in footsteps and tire tracks the following days as the plant is unable to repair itself and begins to die. Frost damage can occur on any turfgrass mowed at any height but it is amplified when the

plant is mowed low, as on a putting green. In a best-case scenario, damage will be limited to leaf blades only, which will eventually disappear once active turf growth resumes. However, if the plant crown, or growing point of the plant, is compromised, damage will be more severe. With this in mind, even allowing just a few groups to play when frost is present can be very damaging to the

GOLFER’S IQ Improve your golf etiquette with helpful tips from the pros 1) Frost Delays – Frost can form when the air temperature reaches 37 degrees or lower. When we have frost, or even the possibility of frost please stay off of ALL GRASS until a member of the agronomy team lets us know it is OK. 2) Our Pace of Play at Timuquana is expected to be in 4 hours or less. If your group makes the turn in more than 2 hours or finishes in more than 4 hours, your group will be informed. Should pace of play become a constant issue, additional sanctions may be applied. On days were it is cart path only, groups will be expected to play in 4:14 minutes. 3) If you arrive to tee off when there is more than one group waiting, please check in with the starter or golf professional on the tee and let them know when your entire group is ready to play and in close proximity to the first tee. All players must check in the Golf Shop first.

greens, and the rest of the golf course. It is not completely understood when frost will cause damage, so the decision to keep traffic off the golf course must be made conservatively to protect the condition of the course. For this reason, golf facilities often close the course to play or delay starting times until frost has completely melted.
