FROM THE PRESIDENT As 2019 comes to an official close, I am grateful for another successful year that we have had at TCC. My article last month focused on how country clubs operate financially. This month, I want to express the results of our efforts over the past year. Membership For those who attended the Annual TCC Open House in early December and had the chance to see the table of new member badges, it is impressive to see another record year of new members joining Timuquana. Last year we set a record of 86 new memberships and I am happy to report that we have shattered that record with 107 new memberships for 2019! It's apparent that our investment in the pool and The Grove, along with our continued operational improvements from our professional staff, are paying dividends. Golf With the growth of membership we saw this past year, coupled with local and national acknowledgement of our fine course, rounds of golf exceeded our historical record from last year by 2,400 rounds, totaling just over 26,000 rounds. Instruction, junior golf, and event participation was also up over last year. This boom in demand has allowed us to make some notable staffing changes in the Golf Shop to accommodate this demand and to ensure our level of service remains high. Pool & The Grove It goes without saying that the pool and The Grove have been tremendous hits. In speaking with Holly, our Membership & Marketing Director, we can attribute roughly half of our membership growth to new members who joined due to these important, family-centric

4 | JA N UA RY/ F E B R UA RY 2 0 2 0

improvements. While we do not count daily attendance at the pool, I can tell you that we’ve quadrupled our towel use and checked in over 1,400 guests of members this summer. The Grove was also a home run and will be featured in an upcoming edition of a club-specific periodical this spring. The revenue at The Grove exceeded our old pool by 350%; which was in good part to 3,375 Tomahawks sold! While these areas showed the most outstanding changes, we cannot overlook other areas that are having equal success, such as Tennis — with private lessons and Pro Shop sales up 50% and 40% respectively; and Fitness with personal training participation up 50% year over year. Lastly, it feels like the USGA U.S. Women’s Amateur FourBall event was a lifetime ago, but I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge this event as part of the Club’s success this year. With the efforts of the volunteers, committee chairs, and department staff, we executed one heck of tournament, and in the words of many USGA officials – one of the best-run USGA tournaments they've been a part of. As we look ahead to the Club’s 97th year, I'm excited to see the continued improvements being made by our staff, committees, and Board of Governors. As always, I welcome your feedback to ensure our recent success continues long into the future. Respectfully,

Chip Dempsey 2019 - 2020 President

GOLF NEWS Another decade is behind us and there is a lot to look back on. Timuquana has added new members who love golf and are playing more than ever. TCC is bringing positive momentum going into 2020. Our golf staff will continue to adapt to the novel ways that our membership enjoys the golf course. At the same time, we will preserve the quality that our traditional golfers have enjoyed over the years. On Friday, January 17, we'll have a Men’s One-Day MemberGuest starting at 12:30 pm. The cost is $135 per player and includes lunch before play and dinner after. This is a great way to show off your terrific golf course and Club! The entry form will be available in the Golf Shop and in the Weekly View. As a reminder, our Pow Wow sign up will be the next morning. Pow Wow, our Men’s Member-Guest, has become a very popular event and will be played March 26–28. Entries have already been mailed, but if you need a copy, please contact the Golf Shop. Registration for Pow Wow will begin at 7:00 am on Saturday, January 18. Entries will be limited to one per person, and anyone can turn in an entry — the member who is playing, a family member, or a colleague. The first 88 entries will be entered into the field and the rest will be placed on a waiting list.

As most of you have probably heard, I have transitioned into a new role here at the Club. On December 1, I became the Director of Instruction and Junior Golf Development. Timuquana has never had someone in this position and I am very excited about the opportunity. Many of you have had questions about my new role and what I will be doing day-to-day. This new position allows me to be more available to teach individual lessons, and also enables me to introduce new game improvement opportunities for men, women, and juniors. If you have not had the chance to experience Trackman, our state-of-the-art launch monitor, now is the perfect time!

TCC PGA Junior League • Coach Jason Smith and the TCC Tomahawks celebrate a win against Sawgrass Country Club – TCC’s second win of the season! 8 | JA N UA RY/ F E B R UA RY 2 0 2 0

For the 29th year, the Underwood Cup will be held at Timuquana on Monday and Tuesday, February 17 and 18. The matches feature the 12 best amateurs against the 12 best club professionals in the Greater Jacksonville area. On Sunday, February 16, the Contestant-Am portion of the event will be played at 12:30 pm. The contestants are asked to bring two guests, and we ask Timuquana members to round out their foursome. The cost is $90 per player and includes lunch, golf, prizes, and hors d’oeuvres after play. Sign up in the Golf Shop. This year’s Men’s Four-Ball Championship will be held Saturday, February 29 and Sunday, March 1. This year's event will be limited to the first 56 teams to register. The first day will have tee times with an Oyster Roast on the River Terrace that evening. On Sunday, there will be a shotgun start with lunch to follow. The cost is $175 Clint Avret, PGA per player. Entry forms will be available in the Golf Shop and in Director of Golf the Weekly View. cavret@timuquana.net

New in 2020, we will be hosting Trackman Combines. This will give everyone the opportunity to test their skills and get feedback as to which parts of their game they can improve. We already have great junior programming, but I'm working to make it even better. A Junior Roundo and Junior MemberMember Tournament are already on the winter calendar, and I hope to get several more on the books for 2020. If your junior is not quite ready for competition, consider having them participate in our hugely successful after-school clinics and summer golf camps. Another great program we will continue to offer is the PGA Junior League, and I am excited to take the lead role in coaching our teams. With this new position, you will have someone at Timuquana who is dedicated full-time to helping you or your junior improve your game and have more fun while playing golf. Keep an eye on this portion of the newsletter going forward for instructional content and please let me know how I can help you enjoy golf even more in 2020!

FROST ON GREENS FROM THE USGA Frost is essentially frozen dew. Ice crystals visible on the outside of the plant can also form on the inside of grass blades. The grass plant, normally resilient to footsteps or cart traffic, becomes brittle and fragile when ice crystals form. Under the pressure of traffic, ice crystals puncture living plant tissues and rupture plant cells. Damage will not appear right away, but it will show up in footsteps and tire tracks the following days as the plant is unable to repair itself and begins to die. Frost damage can occur on any turfgrass mowed at any height but it is amplified when the plant is mowed low, as on a putting green. In a best-case scenario, damage will be limited to leaf blades only, which will eventually disappear once active turf growth resumes. However, if the plant crown (growing point of the plant) is compromised, damage will be more severe. With this in mind, even allowing just a few groups to play when frost is present can be very damaging to the greens, and the rest of the golf course. It is not completely understood when frost will cause damage, so the decision to keep traffic off the golf course must be made conservatively to protect the condition of the course. For this reason, golf facilities often close the course to play or delay starting times until frost has completely melted. W W W.T I M U Q UA N A . N E T | 9

We have asked for your feedback, collected the data, and made adjustments to several programs to ensure the best service for our members. If you’re looking for a new children’s summer camp experience, be sure to check us out! If you’d like to partake in new activities, then look no further! CAMP TIMUQUANA

To ensure the best experience for our youngest members of the Tribe, we have hired a dedicated camp director to oversee our new and improved summer camp. No longer KE Kids’ Camp, Camp Timuquana will be a 9-week program full of activities your children already love, plus others they are sure to enjoy. These include arts and crafts, swimming, golf, tennis, STEM, and Lego Science Factory.

TCC SPORTS CAMP

TCC Sports Camp has undergone improvements and is more robust than ever! It will now run Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm. We’ve added water polo, flag football, speed and agility training, soccer, and lacrosse to enhance the experience. Moreover, we’ve hired a camp director who will facilitate our newly designed TCC Sports Camp.

SUMMER PROGRAMS OPEN HOUSE

On March 6, we will be hosting a Summer Programs Open House during First Friday. Here you can register, meet our camp directors and counselors, as well as ask any questions you may have. Did you know that tennis is the “perfect workout?” Playing tennis has many benefits including lowering your resting heart rate, lowering body fat, increasing aerobic capacities, improving metabolic function, and improving muscle tone, strength, and flexibility. Playing tennis also boosts brain function and relieves stress. It is also the perfect social activity. You can burn anywhere from 365 to 565 calories an hour while you have fun socializing! The Member-Guest held this past November was a special weekend for the tennis community here at the Club. This event has grown bigger and better each year. 92 players competed in 7 different divisions, with a total of 136 matches played over two days. Thank you to all of our members who participated. This wouldn't be the tennis "event of the year" without your terrific support. We also want to thank our sponsors: Nimnicht Family of Dealerships, Rayware Hardware, McGrath Gibson Injury & Family Law, Barnett Wealth Advisors, the Celeste Green Family, and Business Valuation Inc. Each contributed in making this year’s event more superb than ever. Big congratulations go out to the winners: Elite Division:
