Timuquana will offer its members, their families and guests exceptional social, golf and recreational experiences, which foster enduring friendships and preserve community.
This year the Club celebrates its 100th Anniversary, an incredible milestone and accomplishment, and one we all should take great pride in celebrating. Featured within this issue of The Timuquanan, I want to highlight our Centennial Art Unveiling and Jacksonville History Lecture on Saturday, February 11, scheduled just one day ahead of the Club’s incorporated date of February 12, 1923! Members can enjoy a three-course dinner with wine and see the unveiling of the Club’s commissioned art piece that will be displayed at the end of Heritage Hallway near the Golf Shop. This event is complimentary and limited to the first 150 members and their significant others. Also approaching is our Centennial Gala on Saturday, April 29. This once-ina-lifetime celebration will be an event you will not want to miss!
As you go about your normal Club activities, note that our traditional logo has been replaced with a Centennial logo. Select merchandise around the Club will portray the Centennial logo and can be purchased to commemorate this occasion.
The Board of Governors continues to focus its efforts on the Club’s Centennial Strategic Plan as we enter the final year of this 10-year plan. As done in years prior, the Strategic Plan has been updated with accomplishments and actions from 2022 and new/updated objectives created for 2023. The revised Plan is on the Board Governance tab of our website for members to review. This is a terrific resource to see what the management team, committees, and Board of Governors focus on each year.
This time of year, we highly encourage members to consider volunteering for committee positions. Committee volunteers have a one-year term that ends annually on March 31, concurrent with the selection of three annual Board positions and appointment of new committee chairs. Committee involvement is the lifeblood of quality clubs, and your participation ensures the members’ needs are met. If you are interested in serving, please email Greg Sheara at gsheara@timuquana.net. I also want to acknowledge and thank members who have been actively involved in committees and Board positions, giving their time and talents for the betterment of the Club.
Lastly, Founder and Honorary Life members, please mark your calendars for Tuesday, March 7 for our Founder’s Day Annual Meeting at 11:00 am, and the Annual Meeting Information Session with the Board of Governors on Wednesday, February 15, at 6:00 pm. The information session is a great opportunity to review the proxy statement that will be distributed in late January and discuss a wide variety of Club topics with the Board.
As always, we welcome your ongoing feedback, so please do not hesitate to reach out to me, Greg, or any member of the Board of Governors. I look forward to celebrating this historical year and seeing everyone around our beautiful Club and at our special Centennial events.
Respectfully, Jim Thompson 2022 - 2023 President
Hopefully, you had the opportunity to attend our annual Open House and that it was a delightful start to your holiday season. We were thrilled to see so many members— both longtime and new—enjoying the festivities. With the arrival of 2023, we celebrate our 100-year heritage and move forward with plans carefully developed to create exceptional experiences for you.
As the Club welcomes members through natural attrition, we’ll continue to host our New Member Orientations—as they provide opportunities to highlight culture, share customs and traditions, and introduce departments and areas of interest around the Club. I’m pleased to relay that, beginning this year, the Membership Committee will conduct prospective member dinner interviews. With a commitment to ensure Timuquana is comprised of families who uphold the values of our Club, we expect the dinner interviews will aid in this.
Best wishes for the new year, and I hope to see you at the events planned to honor Timuquana’s Centennial!
Each year, the Finance Committee and Board of Governors review the Club’s rates and fees across all of our amenities. These include club storage, greens fees, clinic rates, private instruction, etc. The 2023 fees can be found on the Club’s website on the Member Resources tab under My Club. They are also available on TCC’s app by clicking on Stay Connected and then Club Documents. These fees are effective January 1, 2023.
Any changes to membership dues take effect annually on April 1 following the Club’s Annual Meeting of the voting members in early March. More information will be shared via email following the meeting. The Club’s annual report is also available online, which is another great resource highlighting the actions of all departments and an in-depth summary of the Club’s finances for the year and projections through 2023.

I’m excited to announce that we have hired a new Director of Instruction, Jim Goergen. Originally from Saint Petersburg, Florida, Jim has been the Director of Instruction at Capital City Club in Atlanta for the past seven years. Prior to moving to Atlanta, Jim spent 12 years at Sea Island Golf Club, where he was an Instructor and Head Teaching Professional with Jack Lumpkin. He is an award-winning teacher named the Georgia PGA Teacher of the Year and a Golf Digest Best Teacher multiple times, most recently in 2019-2020. Jim has a strong passion for junior golf and development and has had multiple students receive golf scholarships to Stanford, the University of Georgia, Augusta State, and Georgia Tech. With his wife, Rachel, and their two children, Sammy and Hannah, Jim will move to Jacksonville later this month. We look forward to having Jim join us in mid-February.

Timuquana Ladies’ Academy is a fun and innovative way to learn the game, meet fellow members and become comfortable on the golf course. Each semester includes two clinics and two 9-hole playdays. Clinics focus on skills in four areas: off the tee, approach shots into the green, short game shots around the green, and putting. Playdays maintain the Operation 36 structure in order to track progress.

The Tennis staff would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year and welcome 2023! We hope you and your family had a wonderful holiday season. This is the time of year we like to encourage members to make goals for the new year and try different ways to enjoy our tennis and pickleball facilities.
2023 will be an exciting year, with new programming and trips to professional tournaments and desired tennis destinations. In April, we will travel to Charleston, South Carolina for the Women’s WTA Tournament and a camp at Wild Dunes Resort. We are currently working on a tropical destination for a tennis and pickleball trip in the Fall.
Additionally, please let our Tennis Staff know if there is anything we can do to make your experience on the tennis and pickleball courts more enjoyable.
It’s that time of year when we set our New Year’s resolutions and do our darndest, at least for a while, to stick to them. Here are a few resolution suggestions to help improve your game in 2023:
There are several ways to lose a point but hitting a ball in the net is a surefire way to do so. In 2023, try to only miss long. Fewer balls in the net mean more points on the board!
This year, take a little something off your first serve and always play a smart, high-percentage second serve. You will win more points by hitting an easier serve in the court rather than blasting both serves and hoping for the best. One thing is for sure, you will never win a point after you bury both serves in the net.
In the heat of the moment, it is very easy to forget to say the score. Unfortunately, it’s also very easy to forget the score as both the server and returner. Spare yourself the embarrassment and hassle of trying to recall the score with your opponent mid-game.
Most recreational players have weak serves, which won’t improve without practice. Try and work on your serve for at least twenty minutes a week. In conjunction with serving smarter to eliminate double faults, you will be holding serve more regularly in no time.
We all know how quickly and often momentum can change in a tennis match. This year, do your best to focus on each shot individually as if it were the most significant point in the match. Don’t let a lack of focus take you out of the match by handing the momentum back to your opponent. You never know if it won’t come back your way.
Nothing will inspire you to work on your game like watching the pros. If you cannot attend an ATP or WTA tournament, go to a college match. The level is still incredible, and not only will you have fun, but you are guaranteed to find new motivation to practice, play, and improve your game!
Win or lose, always remember that tennis is fun! Even after a poor match, you just got a great workout and chances are you at least hit some good shots that will keep you coming back for more.
Good luck, and have fun with your tennis in 2023!
