FROM THE PRESIDENT We did it! After four years of discussion and planning, the bulldozers moved in and took out the old Pool that had faithfully served many generations of members since 1965. It wasn’t easy. We watched the construction and the seemingly endless moving of dirt from one side of the space to the other day after day. We endured a fenced-off parking lot and often had to struggle to find a parking spot due to all the construction trucks. Yet slowly but surely, the shape of the pool emerged. Then one day, they started to slowly fill the pool with water and everyone started to get excited. Then the deck and pavers went in, and chairs, umbrellas and tables appeared. The landscapers planted the trees & shrubs, and low and behold the pool was complete! The opening of the Pool & The Grove on Memorial Day Weekend was a smashing success on every level. We had over 1500 people visit over the course of the weekend. The dock was loaded with boats and people hummed about The Grove. But nothing comes close to the inflatable obstacle course floating in the pool that challenged all the kids who waited so patiently for the Pool to open. There seemed to be a perpetual line by the lifeguard stand of kids waiting their turn. Many people have commented how pleasantly surprised they are by The Grove. It has become a wonderful place to have lunch/dinner with the kids, meet friends for a drink or just show up and hang out. With ample shade and a breeze coming off the River, it has become an oasis to many people that haven’t been to the pool area in years. I imagine come Fall with cooler temperatures, the firepit will be a popular destination as well.

3 | J U LY/AU G U S T 2 0 1 9

I want to thank all those that helped make the Pool and The Grove a reality. Four years ago, then President Mike Kelly & his Board asked for raising of your Capital Dues to fund projects outlined in the Strategic Plan that would better the members' Club experience. It's great to see that vision rewarded with the product we have before us. As part of the Strategic Plan, the next endeavor before us is the complete remodeling of the Pow-Wow Room, Ella’s Bar and the kitchen that serves those areas. Like the previous pool and snack bar, these areas have served us well but updates are sorely needed. We have worked through the first set of designs and will be sharing with the Membership in the coming months. I often have people asking me what they can do to help the Club. They offer to serve on committees and support events. These are much appreciated, but the most valuable thing you can do to help the Club is be aiding in the growing of our membership. The best way to do that is by doing one simple thing – invite a non-member friend to visit the Club with you - for a drink, golf, tennis, lunch, the Pool, The Grove, First Friday. Welcome them to Timuquana and let them experience what we have to offer. Respectfully,

Chip Dempsey 2019 - 2020 President

TCC Opens New Pool

and all-new Riverfront dining with The Grove Over Memorial Day weekend, the Club was abuzz with excitement as members and friends gathered to be some of the very first to experience our newest Club amenities. After 9 months of construction, TCC opened the beautiful new Pool and The Grove dining venue. The spectacular, beach entry Pool and expansive lounge and deck spaces offer a variety of places to relax, beat the summer heat with a refreshing swim, or workout with water aerobics and lap swimming. The Pool also hosts a wide range of recreational activities, from our River Rats swim teams, lessons, inflatable obstacle course, dive-in movies, camps, and even our War Eagles Water Polo – the only Water Polo team in Jacksonville. The pool is also heated, allowing for year-round enjoyment. The Grove offers a whole new way for members and friends to experience Timuquana. Taking advantage of our stellar views of downtown and unique location on the St. Johns River, The Grove is a fun and casual outdoor dining venue with a walk-up bar, waterfront seating, and a firepit. Gather with friends and enjoy a specialty cocktail or cold beer, order from an all new menu, exclusive to The Grove, or cool down with a slushie or a scoop from our ice cream bar. This is already a new Club favorite.

GOLF NEWS It is hot this time of year, so we do what we can to help everyone enjoy golf early in the morning and later in the afternoon. On weekdays, play can begin at 7:30 am and on weekends we can start groups playing at 7:00 am. Please keep in mind Saturday Rules. There are also times that multiple groups are at the first tee at the same time. The way a group gets “in line” is to have their entire group present at the First Tee and ready to play. Only then will your group be considered to be “in line”. If there are groups waiting, please be patient and enjoy the company of your fellow members while you wait. It is still better than tee times! As the course continues to heal from aeration, we are preparing for July 4. As we did last July 4, we will have an 8:30 am shotgun start. The tournament will be a moneyball event — make your own foursome and count two best balls of the foursome with a caveat. One designated player’s score MUST count on each hole (moneyball) along with the best ball of the remaining three players. On holes 9 and 18 all four scores will count. Please sign up in the Golf Shop for the 8:30 am shotgun and the tee will open for other play around 1:30 pm. The cost is $20 per player. We will take the first 26 complete foursomes to sign up. Wednesday Afternoon Golf — At 5:00 pm each Wednesday there is a 5:00 pm golf game. Prior to 4:00 pm each Wednesday, sign up with the Golf Shop individually or as a team of two people. In August we will have our second aeration for the summer. The course will be closed August 5–8 and reopen on Friday, August 9 at 11:00 am. The Junior Club Championship is August 24 and 25. All

juniors under the age of 18 are eligible to play. There will be different flights and tees for different age groups. All ages will play both days and juniors must be able to walk and carry their golf bags. The 2019 Junior Club Champion will come from the Championship Flight. Please call the Golf Shop to sign up. The Men’s Club Championship qualifying will begin on August 27 and will continue through September 12. The last day to sign up for the flighted Club Championship will be September 12. There will be a two-week window to finish the first round matches by September 27 and the finals weekend will be September 28 and 29. Labor Day will be here before you know it. We think of Labor Day as the unofficial end to summer, but you know the dog days of summer are just getting started and will continue for at least 6 more weeks. On Saturday, August 31, the course will operate as a normal Saturday but there will be optional Gross and Net Skins games that day. Then on September 2, we will have a shotgun start at 8:30 am. The game will be a two best balls net of your foursome. Entry fee will be $20 and will be limited to the first 26 groups to sign up. Our newest assistant professional wants to play with you! Friday afternoons at 4:30 pm Kerry Hutchison will accompany 3 players for 9 holes. There will be no instructor charge for these playing opportunities — just a cart fee if you ride perhaps a beverage during or after play! Sign up in the Golf Shop to play! GOLFER’S IQ Improve your golf etiquette with helpful tips from the pros

1) When at a par 3 or otherwise, take your clubs up to the shot as you measure distance. Do not walk to the tee, measure your yardage, and then go back to get your clubs for the shot. 2) Hydrating – this time of year we all sweat. Bring a water bottle, fill it at every water station, and try to drink it all before you get to the next station. If you need additional drinks, call the Golf Shop and we will bring something out. Also, all of our carts have coolers on them now. Fill them up at the T-Stand and they will put ice in your cooler. 3) Cold Towels – It is hot this time of year so we have cold towels at the Par 3’s, the turn, and at the Bag Drop. When finished using the cold towel, put them in the bucket below the cooler or leave them on your cart so we can launder and reuse them.

For more information, contact the Golf Shop at 904-389-0477 or tccgolfshop@timuquana.net.

TENNIS NEWS Summertime is in full swing here at TCC. The pool is rockin’, the kids are running around in their camps, and the Tennis Center is as busy as the bees! If you haven’t heard the buzz, “Xglosive” blacklight tennis was a smashing success. Don’t worry if you missed out — they will be back in the future.

XGLOSIVE BLACKLIGHT TENNIS

We have started summer-specific programs for both adults and children, so there’s something for everybody. Ladies' “Wine Not Thursdays” are the perfect way to come out and play with your friends while grabbing a glass of wine. Thursdays are also on for the guys since it’s Men’s Night as well. We will be offering childcare so both parents can enjoy the evening. We are very excited to announce that Wimbledon finalist MaliVai Washington is set for a grass court charity tournament on July 6. MaliVai lives right here in Jacksonville. It’s a round robin and exhibition match benefiting his foundation which helps at-risk youth on the First Coast. Help a local cause and become part of what is sure to become a tradition on the River Lawn. We would also like to thank member Mark Chaffin for the amazing photos he takes at many of TCC's Tennis events! Matthew Bacon, USPTA, Director of Tennis mbacon@timuquana.net

TCC TENNIS WELCOMES JACOB OEHSER We'd like to welcome Jacob Oehser! He will be managing the Tennis Pro Shop and working on the courts. He’s a graduate of Methodist College with a degree in Professional Tennis Management. He also played top 6 for the Monarchs all four years he was a student.

RECREATION NEWS NEW ACTIVITIES FOR SUMMER 2019 I think I speak for so many when I say the Timuquana Pool is just astonishing! The view, breezes from the river, The Grove, and all the amenities the Pool has to offer are amazing. As we move into July and August, I’d like to outline some important information. Sign In: Please continue to sign in with the lifeguards at the Pool Desk when visiting the Pool. Once signed in, my staff can provide you with towels for your visit. With our younger visitors, we are requesting that they wear the “iPlay” swim diaper covers over their Little Swimmers diapers to ensure a fun day for all members. The “iPlay” diaper covers are reusable and we ask that each family partakes in this. The first diaper cover is complementary per child, however after the first one members will be charged a fee. Guests: Guests are permitted, however we must sign them in at the Pool Desk. Anyone who is not a member is considered a guest and will

need to be accompanied by a member at the Pool. Rafts/ Floats: Pool rafts and floats are permitted when the Pool is not at full bathing capacity. The obstacle course will go in every Saturday and Sunday with an occasional mid-week appearance. Bathing Suits: Lastly, we remind our members about our bathing suit policy. For men, it must be a bathing suit and not shorts that are worn to the gym. For women, we request a conservative look that is not too revealing. Moving forward, we have so much to look forward to with this new facility as we enter the upcoming months at TCC. We hope to see you and your family at the pool this July and August!

Celebrating Our History at TCC It's hard to imagine, but Timuquana Country Club is getting close to its 100th birthday! While TCC won't turn 100 years old until 2023, planning for our Centennial Celebration is already underway! As part of this effort, the Board of Governors has appointed an History Committee, tasked with producing a plan as we move toward this historic date, and researching other clubs on the best way to celebrate this incredible milestone. This committee will also be developing ways to reach out to the membership to gather and collect historic memorabilia and document personal recollections, as well as to inventory what we presently have in the Club collection. Want to Help? Anyone interested in volunteering to help with the initial planning should contact Holly Kaspar, Membership & Marketing Director at hkaspar@timuquana.net.

Among the Club's memorabilia is this old postcard featuring a look back at the TCC Clubhouse of the past.
