FROM THE PRESIDENT As we move into the heart of the summer, it feels great to see life returning to normal and our various activities and programs thriving across the Club. Our annual Memorial Day Celebration was well attended with over 500 members enjoying the golf tournament, pool games, and kids’ activities on the lawn. We expect our July 4th Celebration will be equally as fun and lively. Summer camps are nearly full throughout the 9-week schedule, the River Rats are midway through their season, and our summer PGA Junior League and Ladies’ Operation 36 are in full swing. GOLF AT TIMUQUANA As you explore this issue of The Timuquanan, you will learn more about several important programs and initiatives. Details for the upcoming Constellation Furyk & Friends PGA TOUR Champions event are starting to come together, and personally speaking, having grown up watching Fred Couples, Davis Love, and Ernie Els, it gives me great pride to see these past champions coming to our course. You will also find information on our 2022 Golf Course Restoration Project. The Club has been working through a Golf Course Master Plan with architect Bruce Hepner for the better part of five years. The upcoming

4 | J U LY/AU G U S T 2 0 2 1

closure, scheduled to begin January 2, will complete the remainder of the plan and replace vital infrastructure that was last redone nearly 25 years ago. While the course is in great shape thanks to Alan Brown and his team, certain components of the course do require replacement over time. TCC is a unique and special course for our region and the completion of the remainder of the plan will certainly showcase how exceptional it truly it is. OPERATIONAL UPDATES I would also like to thank the membership for their patience and support of our staff during April, May and June as Club management was challenged with staffing levels in a rising inflationary labor market. TCC, like many of the restaurants and clubs within our area and across the nation, has needed to increase wages to remain competitive. These increases were seen across many of our departments including golf maintenance, which continues to be challenged finding talent. These wage increases, previously anticipated for 2023 due to the State of Florida minimum wage hike, were accelerated forward to meet this demand. We believe these increased wages, coupled with the Club’s strong benefits program, has set us up well for ensuring we are an employer of choice in the

North Florida hospitality industry. From the Club’s financial standpoint, wages and increased commodity prices have created the need to increase menu prices to offset some (not all) of this impact. These menu price changes went into effect in June, however, we have managed to keep prices slightly below our local restaurant favorites in town for comparable items. The Club’s professional staff will be focusing its attention on managing labor through year end. TIMUQUANA CARES EMPLOYEE FOUNDATION Our commitment to our staff goes well beyond our duty to pay competitive wages and exemplary benefits. This year, Club management and the Board of Governors will launch the Timuquana Cares Employee Foundation. This Foundation will be a 501(c)(3) tax deductible, charitable organization. Timuquana’s members often refer to the Club as a home away from home. Many view the relationships forged here as an extension of their families. Likewise, many of the people who work at Timuquana believe they are part of a community that stands ready to help in times of need. In the past when an employee suffered an unexpected financial or personal hardship, such as an illness, the loss of a home, or the death of a family member, Timuquana staff and management would try to pass a hat for donations. Over time, these well-intended gestures seemed inadequate in the face of very difficult situations.

The spirit of compassion and the belief that we could do more inspired us to create the Foundation, a member-funded organization meant to help our staff in times of crisis. This charitable aid also includes scholarship support to employees and their families who demonstrate both financial need and academic achievement. The Club is currently filing with the IRS and hopes to have a determination on the Foundation in a few months. Our first initiative to get the fund rolling will be a modest donation to the Foundation as part of the annual holiday fund program in October. We hope that you will consider a donation when that notice circulates in the Fall. As always, we appreciate your feedback so please reach out to me, Greg or any member of the Board should you have any questions, comments, or concerns. I look forward to seeing everyone around the Club this summer.

With sincere appreciation,

Michael Muldoon 2021 - 2022 President

2022 GOLF COURSE RENOVATION The heart of Timuquana's tradition and mystique is its renowned Donald Ross 18 hole golf course. Built in 1923, it has earned a reputation amongst golf aficionados as one of Florida's finest courses. As the golf course has evolved through various designers and professional staff, Timuquana had lost some of the Ross character of its past. Mowing lines have veered away from their true strategic widths and shied away from any hazards. The bunkers were rebuilt with softer maintenance in mind rather than historical character and strategic value. At times, landscaping and non-indigenous trees started to dominate the look of the golf corridors, countering the true understated design. Some putting surfaces have shrunk and lost strategic hole locations. None of these issues are foreign to clubs of our era and stature. In 2017, under the guidance of Bruce Hepner, the Club’s golf course architect, the Greens Committee, Finance Committee, and Board of Governors started work on a Golf Course Master Restoration Plan. Phase 1 included the bunkers which were completed after Hurricane Irma in 2018. In 2019 and 2020, the Club completed its approaches transition to Trinity Zoysia, added additional tee boxes, completed selective tree removal to improve fairway course conditions, and implemented native areas. With our Centennial quickly approaching in 2023 and our irrigation system and greens reaching the end of their useful life (last replaced in 1996), the Board of Governors has approved the completion of the remainder of the Master Plan in 2022. This final course work will reduce the need for any future closures for the next 15-20 years. Alan Brown, Director of Golf Course and Grounds, and his team will begin with main line irrigation installation on November 8, 2021. This will be minimally-invasive and the course will remain open. Alan’s team will start to spray the golf course in preparation for full construction starting on November 22, 2021. The golf course will close and construction will commence following play on Sunday, January 2, 2022. The renovation will take approximately eight months. During this time, the Club will have various options for members to play other courses in the area and will be arranging multiple golfing trips both locally and nationally. Additional information on reciprocity will be available in the fall. 8 | J U LY/AU G U S T 2 0 2 1

The Golf Course Master Plan can be found under the Board Governance tab on the Club’s website and lists the entire hole-by-hole scope of work. In summary, the Club will be completing the following restoration items: • Rebuilding all greens complexes. Expanding greens where they have shrunk over time. • Re-grassing all fairways and tee boxes. • Adding additional bunkers and tee boxes. • Selective tree removal to improve course conditions. • Replacing the entire irrigation system.

portion of next year, but like all of Timuquana’s assets, the golf course needs to be repaired and replaced from time to time. As with any of our construction projects, we encourage members to reach out to our professional staff to get tours of the work and learn more about the enhancements. Progress photos will be shared along the way. We are incredibly excited to continue our ongoing relationship with Bruce Hepner and believe that the 2022 restoration will enhance our course’s timeless architecture and playability and afford our members another century of

• Replacing a substantial amount of drainage systems. • Enhancing #18 finishing hole (renderings shown below). • Replacing all concrete cart paths with natural screenings (other than areas near the clubhouse). Having recently completed the upgraded practice facilities this summer, these areas will be open to members and their families throughout the closure. Teaching programs such as junior golf, clinics, ladies' golf and individual lessons will also be available throughout the year. We understand that it is difficult to lose the ability to play at TCC for a good

MEMBERSHIP & MARKETING It's the start of another busy summer here at TCC and it is wonderful to see all of our member families enjoying the Club and our summer programming. Interest in Timuquana and its membership offerings continues to soar as members invite friends and family to visit the Club, allowing them to see first-hand just how special TCC truly is. With all of that interest, the Club's management and Board of Governors continue to monitor and manage the application process and wait list. The following are some important updates we'd like to share with you at this time. Membership Cap & Wait List The Club is currently on a wait list, with the overall membership capped at 1100. At the time when the cap was voted on and approved by the members, the Club was already oversubscribed just past this limit. Once the total number of members drops below 1100, we'll begin inviting approved members from the wait list. Applicants are officially added to the wait list once they complete the full process for approval. As of late June, there are 20 members officially on the wait list, with another 29 applications in at various steps of the process. How long is the wait list? Because of the variable nature of monthly attrition, it is difficult to predict the average wait time for prospective members. At this time, we expect the wait time for new member applicants

1 0 | J U LY/AU G U S T 2 0 2 1

coming in to be a minimum of six to eight months; however, the actual wait time may be longer or shorter based on a number of factors, including attrition and prioritization per our Bylaws. Fullyapproved applicants or their sponsors are always welcome to contact the membership office for an update on their current position on the list, or an estimated wait time. Wait times are only an estimate and cannot be guaranteed. Board Meet & Greet Updates As part of the application process, all prospective members are required to attend an in-person Board Meet & Greet cocktail reception, held monthly on the evening of the Board Meeting. To ensure a more meaningful reception experience, as well as improve the Board vetting process, these events are now limited to eight (8) prospective members each month. Currently, the July and August dates are full, with additional applications held for scheduling. Because of the length of the wait list and the number of applications already received, the Board will be temporarily suspending Meet & Greets starting in September to allow for the wait list to drop below a set threshold. We do still encourage prospective members to apply. Submitted applications are date-stamped and held in queue. Once we resume scheduling Meet & Greets, applicants will be contacted in the order in which they applied to attend an upcoming date.

Initiation Fees for New & Reinstating Members With the ongoing growth of the wait list, it is important to note the timing of invitations to join the Club and the initiation fees that will apply. Applicants, once fully-approved and placed on the wait list, are not locked into the initiation fees at the time of application. They are instead subject to the initiation fees and monthly dues & fees that are in place at the time in which they are officially invited to join the Club. These costs are subject to change annually in April. This policy applies to both new and reinstating members. The Founder and Honorary Life Members will vote on proposed new initiation fees at the Founder's Day Annual Meeting in March 2022. If approved, the new rates will go into effect on April 1, 2022. Any members still on the wait list at that time will be subject to these new fees upon invitation. This information is also included in all prospective member communications moving forward. If you have questions about the membership process, need assistance with your membership, or would like to sponsor a new member, please feel free to contact me at any time.

Holly E. Kaspar, MBA Membership and Marketing Director hkaspar@timuquana.net

GOLF NEWS Alan Brown and his team had a successful first two weeks in June with aerification. With the help of the summertime heat and afternoon showers, the course has bounced back and it is in great condition. Please put on your calendar that we are scheduled to do a final aerification from August 2–5. The golf course will be closed for these 4 days, and it will open for normal operations on Friday, August 6. The work on our driving range renovation, as well as our new putting green, has gone incredibly well. As you have noticed, the driving range tee has been sodded and the driving range floor has been sprigged. We anticipate a September 1 opening for the driving range and putting green as we must allow time for the new grass to mature. It is no surprise that Timuquana is the busiest it has ever been from the standpoint of numbers of rounds played. This isn’t just the case at Timuquana. The game of golf has never been as popular and all Clubs throughout the country are experiencing the same increase in rounds that we are. Through the first six months of the year, we are on pace to have 36,000 rounds played at Timuquana this year. This is just over a 30% increase from the 24,000 rounds we played in 2018. As you are aware, we had to add some guest restrictions as well as implement tee times for weekend rounds. We understand that these are significant changes at Timuquana, and your cooperation has been greatly appreciated by the professional staff. Summer temperatures are here! With that being said, we can anticipate thunderstorms most afternoons. Please be aware of our lightning alarm system. Anytime lightning is detected within six miles of the Club, the alarm will sound with one long single blast. At that time, all golfers are required to immediately quit playing and seek shelter. At 20 minutes from the last strike within six miles of the Club, the all-clear siren will sound with three blasts. At that time, it will be safe to resume playing. Our annual July 4th tournament will begin with an 8:30 am shotgun. The first tee will be available at 1:45 pm for those not competing in the tournament. For the holiday weekend, family guests and non-resident guests may play anytime on Friday, July 2, and may play anytime after 10:30 am on Saturday, July 3. We are not far now from hosting the first annual Constellation FURYK & FRIENDS tournament which is set to be played the first week of October. This is a very special time for our Club 1 6 | J U LY/AU G U S T 2 0 2 1

to be able to host many of the greatest players to ever play the game, as well as a wonderful opportunity to showcase our amazing Club and course. We are delighted that TCC members Jim and Tabitha Furyk chose Timuquana to host this exciting event. As we approach the tournament, please be aware of the following dates: • September 12: Beginning on this date we will be cart path only until the start of the event. • September 28: This is the final day the course will be open for play to allow for final preparations. • September 28: This will also be the final day for members to take their golf bags from the bag room as well as have all lockers, both men and women's, cleaned out. Full details are available on pages 6–7 of this newsletter. We appreciate everyone’s cooperation with these dates, and we look forward to an exciting summer and fall for golf at Timuquana.

TCC had a record number of campers registered this summer and we are super proud of the talented staff who are providing excellent service to our members and guests. Our River Rats and War Eagle Water Polo players have been working hard to improve their skills while having fun. Every Friday, we take the time to recognize our great River Rat swimmers, and to build team camaraderie. We are proud to announce that one of our female water polo players qualified for Junior Olympics. She will be the first Jacksonville player ever to do so. Hopefully, under Coach Alison Mantel’s direction, we will field many more in 2022.

TENNIS NEWS The dog days of summer are upon us at Timuquana. With the warmer weather settled in, we haven't slowed down any of the tennis and pickleball action at the Tennis Center. Summer brings us three of our favorite events of the year: junior tennis camps, Wine Not Wednesdays, and our grass court tradition of Wimbledon Woodies & Whites. In June we wrapped up our first sold-out session of junior tennis camp. We had quite the week of tennis, swimming, and fun. Who would have guessed Disney trivia would be such a hit when it rained? Our second session of camp will run the week of July 19. Please check on CourtReserve or call the Tennis Center to see if space is still available for session two. Wine Not Wednesdays started back in June. Enjoy a glass of your favorite wine while you play some social tennis with your friends every Wednesday until August 4. The timeless tradition of grass courts and all tennis whites will be celebrated in July. Our third annual Wimbledon Woodies & Whites charity round-robin and grass court exhibition is slated for Saturday, July 10. The round-robin portion of the event starts in the morning at the tennis center. While you have lunch on the River Lawn, the pros will play a match on the grass court. Jacksonville’s very own Wimbledon finalist MaliVai Washington will be in the chair umpiring. This event is near and dear to me and the staff since all the revenue generated goes directly to the MaliVai Washington Youth Foundation. A big thank you goes to Alan Brown and his golf course maintenance crew. Every year they take time out of

COURT IRRIGATION IMPROVEMENTS Starting Monday, July 26th we will start at small improvement to the court irrigation system. All of the irrigation heads will be replaced with higher quality heads made specifically for harsher environments. The heads will also be repositioned to provide better coverage and consistency across all courts. We anticipate each bank of courts to be down 5 days, depending on weather, and anticipate all courts to be completed ahead of fall programming and ladies team tennis.

their busy schedules to make the River lawn look like a court from Wimbledon. We played our inaugural Pro-Am in May, and we had 12 pros come in from places like Orlando and Charleston, SC to play in with our members. The weather was perfect, the play was fantastic, and everyone had a great time. Congratulations to our 2021 champions, Hunter Walker and Joe Reiney, who beat out Cary MacRae and Greg Orr 31-26. Scott Hudmon and Lee Floyd finished in 3rd place and Patrick Emmet and Zach Goldberg finished in 4th. We want to thank all the participants who helped create such a memorable weekend. It's hard to imagine it's already that time again, but we start junior after school programming and ladies' team practices in August. We will announce the dates for after-school and ladies' teams once those schedules are available. Unfortunately, due to a bout of bad weather, the All Out 80’s Social had to be rescheduled for August 20. This is our last summer social and we look forward to having a blast with everyone! For more information, email Matt Bacon at mbacon@timuquana.net. We hope that everyone has a fun-filled and safe 4th of July celebration here at the Club.
