Celebrating Our History at TCC It's hard to imagine, but Timuquana Country Club is getting close to its 100th birthday! While TCC won't turn 100 years old until 2023, planning for our Centennial Celebration is already underway! As part of this effort, the Board of Governors has appointed an History Committee, tasked with producing a plan as we move toward this historic date, and researching other clubs on the best way to celebrate this incredible milestone. This committee will also be developing ways to reach out to the membership to gather and collect historic memorabilia and document personal recollections, as well as to inventory what we presently have in the Club collection. Want to Help? Anyone interested in volunteering to help with the initial planning should contact Holly Kaspar, Membership & Marketing Director at hkaspar@timuquana.net.

Among the Club's memorabilia is this old postcard featuring a look back at the TCC Clubhouse of the past

FROM THE PRESIDENT These are jubilant times here at Timuquana! We wrapped up a very successful 54th edition of the Pow Wow MemberGuest Golf Tournament. The members, their guests, and loved ones experienced a wonderful evening closing party Saturday night. Thank you to Chef Lewis, Matt Harrington, and all the staff who made Saturday night memorable. Activities & Programming Our goal is to give members compelling and creative reasons to use the Club. Over the last several months, Walt Bartman delivered two Shark Tooth Hunting Expeditions, a Fly Fishing Technique Class, and a Superhero Paint Night, with Surf Classes and a Fortnite Tournament on the schedule. Thursday, April 4, the band Jupiter Coyote performed a concert on the River Lawn. The genesis of this event was a couple members who thought it would be fun and brought the idea to the Entertainment Committee. If you have ideas for fun events, contact Lexi Herman, our catering director. Founder's Day and New Board Members We recently had our Founders Day Meeting and elected four new members to the Board of Governors to serve three-year terms: David Loop – President Elect, Membership Committee Chair Mike Oates – Secretary, Fitness Committee Chair Mike Kelley – Treasurer, Finance Committee Chair Billy Hardaker – Greens Committee Chair It's a strong group that brings leadership and real-world business expertise which will help the Club make fact-based decisions. Board Retreat In February, the Board of Governors took a two-day retreat, facilitated by the firm, Kopplin, Kuebler and Wallace. We included the current Board, several prospective Board candidates, and Past Presidents. The objective was to understand what high performing clubs are doing, and just as important, learn what pitfalls to stay away from. The good news is we are doing lots of things right and have improvement in other areas which Greg will outline later. As we look into the next several months, we have a number of projects/events taking place:

4 | M AY/J U N E 2 0 1 9

USGA U.S. Women’s Amateur Four Ball National Championship This prestigious event took place between April 27 and May 1, and featured 128 nationally-ranked players. We had a strong showing of volunteers, and many members opened their homes to players and caddies. We'd like to thank Nick Napoleon and Leslie Sirbaugh for serving as Championship co-chairs. We would also like to thank a host of other members who generously devoted their time, effort and funding. We could not have done it without all of your help! The New Pool and The Grove We anticipate the opening of the new Pool and The Grove dining area for the week of May 20. Many who have built or remodeled a home know that predicting a completion date can be a bit of a gamble, so let’s keep our fingers crossed. We believe the combined areas will provide a transformational experience for the membership. Thank You to Departing Board Members I want to thank Jim Riley for his three years on the Board as President Elect, President and Past President; Bret Catto as Greens Committee Chair; John Donahoo as Secretary; and Mike Muldoon as Treasurer. These gentlemen dedicated hundreds of hours to provide governance to the Club to get us where we are today. I am humbled and honored to be taking over as President from my good friend Jason Burhyte. Like the men mentioned above, Jason has been a relentless advocate for the Club and has driven the organization to new heights. He will be leading our Cabin & Cottage initiative during his last year on the Board as Past President. Finally, thank you for the opportunity to lead the Board of Governors. It's a responsibility I take seriously and will endeavor to make Timuquana a place for you to feel proud of, as well as always welcoming to you, your family and your guests. Respectfully,

Chip Dempsey 2019 - 2020 President

FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER As we transition to summer and the launch of the new pool and new activities around the Club, we also transition roles and responsibilities on the Board. With 1/3 of the Board changing each year, we are consistently challenged to ensure we maintain continuity and direction amongst the Board and committees. This fall, we took the opportunity to hold a leadership retreat. Facilitated by a nationally-recognized consulting firm, Kopplin, Kuebler and Wallace, the 2018 Board and 2019 Board spent two days learning what successful clubs do. We discussed Club best practices, essential processes and policies — including strategic board recruitment, procedural activities regarding elections, meetings, bylaws and planning; board size and committees; a functional partnership with the general manager; strategic planning, board orientation and evaluation; and communication with members; among others. An overarching goal for successful clubs is to achieve committed and consistent governance as part of club culture. The club governance model should provide a solid foundation for processes and procedures to ensure that Timuquana will thrive in a constantly changing world. As a result of the retreat, the Board and professional staff will be focusing on a few key goals for this year: 1. Improve the member feedback system. Each Club committee will be working on developing surveys and other systems to allow for more quantitative and real time member feedback. 2. We have launched a Club Governance section of the website. Within this tab, we have included: a. The Club’s Annual Report – This report historically gets produced in hard copy form for just Founder’s Day. This report highlights the Club’s financial position and summarizes the committees' activities for the prior year. b. Nominating Committee Guidelines – I often get asked how Board members are chosen. This newly developed criteria guides our nominating committee in determining the skills and characteristics needed for Board consideration.

c. Board Meeting Update – Following each

monthly meeting, we will post a summary of the meeting online. This will keep members more involved in what the Board is working on to make your experience as a member better.

d. 2023 Strategic Plan – The last Strategic Plan was completed in 2014. Since that time, we have accomplished a great deal of our goals and objectives. This year, the Board, committees and professional staff will be creating an updated vision of Timuquana that will lead us through the Club’s Centennial in 2023. This Strategic Plan will be posted online and will be updated annually with our accomplishments related to each objective. 3. Improved member communication for the Pow Wow Room. By better soliciting the design plans, engaging more members through focus groups, and highlighting the reasoning behind the improvements, we should garner more support and excitement for this transformational renovation! 4. Committees – Improve communication to the membership on getting involved with committees. Timuquana needs the membership’s help and expertise to continue to improve. Committees are vital in providing member feedback and goals for improving the member experience. Committees are formed annually after Founder’s Day in mid March / early April. Please consider giving back to TCC as we approach next Spring. Simply email Greg Sheara at gsheara@timuquana.net if you are interested in participating on a committee. A list of current committees, members and the committees goals for 2019 are all listed on the new Board Governance section of the website. On behalf of the Board and the professional staff, we are excited to provide more transparency in the Club’s operation. We are passionate about the improvements we have planned and look forward to your support and feedback throughout the year.

Member Spotlight: B.A. Grubbs

Pictured above left and below: B.A. Grubbs with his daughter, Dana. Above right - B.A. Grubbs today with TCC Tennis Professional, Gregory Orr.

Tennis Memory Lane B.A. Grubbs has been a member of Timuquana Country Club for over 45 years. A lifelong avid tennis player, even today he continues to hit the courts here at the Club while inspiring others. He was born and raised in Roanoke, Virginia, and introduced to the sport of tennis by his father, who was an avid player himself. It was in this shared interest between father and son, that Grubbs found his own love of the sport, quickly rising to the number one player in his high school, and later, claiming the top spot on his college tennis team at Berea College in Kentucky. Grubbs further developed his passion when he was invited to serve as an Assistant Tennis Pro at a Club in Seal Harbor, Maine over the summer. It was at this club where he had the opportunity to give lessons to an illustrious group of individuals, including members of the Rockefeller, Ford and McCormick families.

them together,” says his daughter, Dana, in a video interview recently filmed by former TCC Tennis Shop Manager, Carolyn Snowden. Also in the video, after being brought to tears by Dana’s reading off of his many contributions to the sport, Grubbs tearfully says, “It was a step to bring amateur tennis and this state to a level it had never seen before.”

For more than two decades, Grubbs served the Florida Section on numerous USTA and sectional committees, also enjoying a two-year stent as president of the FL Section (8485). During that time, he established relationships with the USPTA, USPTR, and the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy. In the 1980s, he also held the presentation that earned Florida the right to launch a pilot school program, one of only two sections chosen by the USTA Education & Research Committee. These accomplishments are honored with his photo, on a plaque in the Hall of Fame at the new home of USTA’s Florida Campus in Orlando.

Grubbs says “It was a sport I loved so much, that I wanted to see my children play.” He recalls teaching his daughter Dana to play, and how she picked up the sport quickly – playing on the Bolles team, and later at the top of her team at the University of Georgia. “Tennis has grown and become more a part of the Club,” he continues. “Back in the days it was all golf, and all major country clubs had a golf course. Tennis was just coming along then and building. But now, tennis has its own group of people. Tennis has taught me that anything that you really want is worth working for.”

“He really had a lot to do with the merging of the professional tennis world, and USTA and USTA Florida; he really brought

GOLF NEWS Hosting the USGA National Championship ended May 1, and we're back to playing golf at 10:30 on May 2. We hope everyone enjoyed the 2019 USGA U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball Championship, and we thank all of the volunteers who helped make it a success, with a feather in the cap of our facility.

format will be Red, White and Blue. On 6 tee boxes, golfers will play from the Blue tees, 6 from the White, and 6 from the Red. 2 Best Balls of your foursome will count for the team score using 100% handicap. Cost: $10 to enter. Make our own group and sign up in the Golf Shop.

May features a different schedule this year, so hopefully you can take part in a few of the upcoming events. On Thursday, May 9, we'll have our Ladies’ Closing Day. It's an 18-hole captains choice event at 8:30 am with lunch to follow. This event is complimentary.

May 28 through June 10 the golf course will be closed for aeration. The Range will reopen for normal hours on June 4. Alan Brown and his staff will be hard at work with some agronomic practices that ensure great playing conditions throughout the year. When you see them please thank them for their efforts!

The following week, May 16–18 is our Spring Classic, Timuquana’s Senior Men’s Member-Guest. This is open to golf members who are 50 years of age and older (guests must be 50 as well). If there are still spots available, we hope you will consider playing!

June 28 we'll have our ever popular "Wine 9.” The front 9 will be set up as all Par 3's with a wine tasting on each hole. The price per player is $45. There must be at least one member of the opposite gender in each foursome. The format is a scramble with some twists.

To close out May, we'll have our traditional Memorial Day activities. On Saturday, we have our regular SATURDAY MAYHEM game, which is an optional stableford game. On Monday, May 27, we have a shotgun start at 8:30 am and again at 1:30 pm for our Memorial Day Tournament. There will be complimentary beverages on the course and the

JUNIOR GOLF PGA JUNIOR LEAGUE IS BACK AND OPEN FOR SIGN UPS!

Ladies' Club Championship Left to Right: Leslie Pierpont; Allison Vogt, Winner; and Beth Pulignano, Runner Up 1 6 | M AY/J U N E 2 0 1 9

The season will run from May 23 to August 13. All junior team members will receive two jerseys, matching hats, custom driver headcover, and a dozen balls! The team will play 6-8 matches and practice throughout the summer. Cost is $395 and is limited to 16 spots. Please call the Golf Shop if you have any questions.

GOLFER’S IQ Improve your golf etiquette with helpful tips from the pros

1) Pick up your feet – when you are on the putting green pick up your feet and don’t twist. After the play of the hole tap down any blemishes around the cup so the next golfer can have a smooth surface. When greens are fast this can make a BIG difference. 2) Pour balls out – when on the driving range pour golf balls out at your station in front of the rope and stand the Titleist bag up. 3) 90 degree rule on carts – Stay on the cart path as you leave the tee box. When you get even with your ball, drive out to it (turn at a 90 degree angle to your ball) and once you have hit your shot and your cart partners shot return to the cart path. Carts should NEVER go beside a green or around a green and all four tires should remain on the path when you park next to the putting surface.

RECIPROCAL PLAY Timuquana has formal reciprocals with the following: Palma Ceia Country Club, Tampa, FL Cherokee Town & CC, Atlanta, GA Valdosta Country Club, Valdosta, GA Sawgrass Country Club, Ponte Vedra Beach, FL Sea Island Golf Club, Sea Island, GA This reciprocal runs from June 1 through August 31. Call the Golf Shop to arrange a time at any of these facilities. If you are travelling to another area where we don’t have a formal reciprocal, please email me with the course you would like to play plus the date, time, and number of players and I will do my best to arrange a starting time.

TENNIS NEWS The spring was a very active and successful time at the TCC Tennis Center. Our A, B, and C teams are finishing off another great year of league tennis and our 4.0 men are gearing up for their inaugural USTA season. We just finished our Member-Member, which was a smashing good time for everyone. First, we always want to thank all the players that participated, but we also want to give special thanks to the winners: Raymur Rachels & Holly Patton and JJ Conners & Aron Stefanides for taking the top women’s and men’s divisions; Paige Sreenan & Carson Hobby and Buck Williams & Phil Gibbs on winning the women’s and men’s middle flights; and Frances Graham & Holland Gibbs on winning the C flights. You all have to come back and defend your titles. We are already looking forward to next year’s Member-Member. As the school year winds down, we are starting to switch gears from after school programming to summer camps. We have events all summer long for every type of player and we hope to Matthew Bacon, USPTA, APC see you this summer at Director of Tennis the Tennis Center. mbacon@timuquana.net

What is the easiest way to figure out someone’s “weaker” side? Have you ever figured out someone’s weaker side too late in the match? Have you even thought about playing to your opponents weak side? All players prefer to play either their forehand or backhand. People have asked me “What is the fastest way to know a weak side”? The answer is to feed a ball in the warm-up right at them. If they run around and hit forehand, bingo! If they run around and hit their backhand you know exactly what they like to play in a match. Try to exploit someone’s weaker side to get better results.

The Spa at Timuquana Salt Love Scrub and Massage With this new service you can experience all the benefits of Himalayan salt. It contains all six electrolytes required for health: sodium, potassium, chloride, magnesium, phosphorus, and calcium. These electrolytes are used for skin cell restoration and are excellent for anti-aging. The salt scrub will boost circulation, shed flaky skin, diminish the appearance of cellulite, and give a refreshed look and feel. Your exfoliated skin will then be nourished with coconut oil and grapefruit essential oils, which will stimulate your lymphatic system and help eliminate excess water weight. As an added benefit, you will take home some of the salt scrub for continued benefits long after your appointment. This is a great service for the hot summer to keep the skin supple and smooth. For Mother’s Day, gift certificates may be purchased throughout the month of May. Cost of service is $125. To schedule your massage, contact Maria Draggoo at 904.387.6700 or fitness@timuquana.net.
