FROM THE PRESIDENT BY THE NUMBERS: BREAKING DOWN CLUB FINANCES We often hear, “the Club must be doing great with all the people participating in our activities!” While it’s true, Timuquana is healthy and active with our new facilities, members, and programs, it’s also important to see the overall picture to better understand Club operations and finances. I’d like to take this opportunity to share some insights into how we budget for the year, and where clubs like ours generate revenue (as well as where they don’t). Just as your home’s budget increases every year with inflation, tuition raises, or price increases, Timuquana’s budget increases slightly every year. The difference is that we budget to break-even each year. That is, our management team strives to operate the Club with expenses matching revenues. BREAKING IT DOWN Like most clubs, Timuquana’s revenues are provided mainly by members’ dues, which break down in two pieces: OPERATING DUES This amount, roughly 44% of the Club’s overall operating revenue, goes to support the ongoing operations of our departments. These funds cover salaries of our staff, the overhead of maintaining the clubhouse, golf course, facilities, insurance, employee benefits, and energy. This also funds the interest on our debt service. CAPITAL DUES Thanks to the prudent leadership of past Boards and the support of the members, the Club has healthy capital dues revenues. This allows us to complete major capital projects included in our long term master plan, such as the pool, The Grove, and the Pow Wow room, without assessments to the membership. Capital funds also help fund the replacement of normal wear and tear items like HVAC equipment, kitchen equipment, roof replacement, etc., along with the Club’s leases on carts, golf maintenance equipment, and fitness equipment.
4 | N OV E M B E R / D EC E M B E R 2 0 1 9
The Club generates more in revenue than its costs in a few areas, including: BANQUETS These member or member-sponsored events typically have higher margins than normal a la carte dining. Where normal a la carte dining has a food cost of 50%, banquet events run between 30%–35%. The labor also associated with banquets is much lower to serve than normal restaurant business, which is less predictable and harder to budget and staff. GOLF Between Cart Fees and Guest Fees, these two departments generate a profit. However, with the high cost to maintain a superior standard on the golf course, some areas of golf generate revenue, while others operate at a loss. BAR The Tribe is a thirsty crowd, and we all know that our members enjoy a nice cocktail. This helps stimulate the Club’s profits as the cost of wine, liquor, and beer is 35% on average and requires less labor to produce. This also helps subsidize the heavy pours on the Tomahawks that would cost close to $20 at a normal restaurant. What surprises most people is to learn that we lose money on every other department. These are almost always associated with fixed labor costs, maintenance, utilities, and other operating needs. One area that I often hear about is Food & Beverage. Consistent with country club “best practices,” we keep prices low in food and beverage. This results in a loss of a few hundred thousand dollars per year. There are several factors associated with this:
• The Club has three restaurants to operate to provide
varied experiences.
• Lower than normal menu prices, and low member event
pricing as an amenity.
• A finite customer base; members and their guests. • A larger menu to accommodate for varied member
interests and needs.
• Gratis food like bar snacks, wings in the 19th Hole, passed hors d’oeuvres, etc. • Less “flex” in staffing, as the Club needs to be prepared for excellent service at all times. As with most private clubs, our expectations as members include a high level of service at a good value for access. Our dues are a reflection of a continued effort to meet those expectations. In reviewing the Club’s financial statements over the past few years, it’s wonderful to see that the Club is in a healthy and viable position, and part of that includes developing and implementing a membership growth strategy. We’ve
achieved significant growth in membership – a feat which is not always easily managed. I’d like to commend the Club’s staff for managing this growth and associated growth in costs to ensure a near break-even budget. We should be proud to have a team that strives to deliver an exceptional member experience while being fiscally responsible. Respectfully,
Chip Dempsey 2019 - 2020 President
FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER The holiday season is once again upon us, and soon the Club will be adorned with Christmas decorations. From Thanksgiving to New Year's, you'll find a wealth of program and special event offerings for one and all. Please take the time to enjoy this edition of the bulletin and all it has to offer. This is also the time of year that the staff enjoys the warmth of the membership’s generosity through the annual Christmas Fund. This wonderful Club tradition means a great deal to all of our employees, whether they have been with us for a short time, or as you will see below, for several decades. As tradition, we will take the opportunity on January 20 at our annual employee appreciation party to recognize employees who have reached significant milestones of employment at Timuquana Country Club. Club President Chip Dempsey and members of the Board will be present to congratulate those employees achieving these important years of service. Below are the names, along with their years of service, of the 2019 recipients. Please make special note of two
incredible employees and longtime members of our family at TCC; Rusty Nicholas who will be celebrating his 40th anniversary and Kelly Woody who will be celebrating her 30th! Please make sure to thank them for all of their hard work and dedication over the years!

GROWING OUR TCC FAMILY
SHARING THE MAGIC OF THE TIMUQUANA EXPERIENCE All of you, our members and friends, are the very heartbeat of Timuquana and the very reason why our Club is the special place that it is. Some say it's the undeniable sense of community and family — the warmth of old southern hospitality and charm you feel the moment you enter the Clubhouse or step up to the first tee. Others reflect on the memories they've made here, through generations of family legacies, growing up with the Club and later joining themselves. From enjoying our world-class amenities, to gathering with friends new and old, there's an undeniable sense that when you're here, you're home. If our members are the heartbeat of our Club, then new members are the lifeblood that keeps us going strong. While the membership will always ebb and flow over time, it's important that we continue to build upon our current foundation by inviting new friends, colleagues, neighbors, and family to discover the magic of Timuquana. Invite a friend to join you in a round of golf, tennis, a dip in the pool, dining at our Clubhouse, or to attend a special event, and they're sure to understand why the TCC experience is second to none.
A SPECIAL THANK YOU GIFT TO SPONSORS We recognize the importance of all that our members do in bringing new members to the Club. As a special thank you, all sponsors (primary and secondary sponsors for any category of membership) who propose new members will receive a $250 TCC Gift Card to be used around the Club. ANNUAL SPONSOR APPRECIATION EVENT In addition, every sponsor who brings in at least one new member for the year (as of September 1), will be invited to our Annual Sponsor Appreciation Event, where we'll celebrate everyone for their efforts, hold special raffles and giveaways, and recognize our top sponsors with a chance to win an unforgettable getaway experience! More information will be announced, so watch for news and announcements. READY TO BECOME A SPONSOR? To learn more about sponsoring new members, please contact Holly Kaspar, Membership and Marketing Director, at 904.388.2664 ext. 100 or by email to: hkaspar@timuquana.net.

GOLF NEWS Staffing Changes As many are aware, back in October, Gus Barchers took the Head Golf Professional position at Quail Creek Country Club in Naples, Florida. We appreciate all of Gus’ efforts over his 5 years of employment at TCC. He made a number of contributions and we are forever grateful for his service. With Gus' departure, we are doing some restructuring in the Golf Shop to aid in improving the member experience. Jason Smith, Head Golf Professional will be moving to a Director of Instruction/Junior Golf Development position. This position will take the lead in individual and small group private lessons, clinic development and execution, junior golf programming, and scheduling and developing new, fun, and innovative ways to enhance the skill levels of all of our golfers. Jason already has plans for reinstating the junior roundos, adding in a junior member-guest, and creating a certified junior golf program. Jason will assume this role on December 1. In Jason’s place, we welcome Brian Anderson, our new Head Golf Professional. Brian’s primary focus will be on the dayto-day operations of the Golf Shop, tournament execution, member communication, and enhancing member service. Brian’s first day with us will be November 5. Many of you have gotten to know Kerry Hutchison in the Golf Shop. Kerry’s focus will be on all things ladies’ golf with an emphasis on growing participation. You will see new clinics and programs and a revamped Ladies Golf Association structure that should broaden the interest to every lady golfer looking to get involved. Kerry, through her merchandising experience with the PGA Tour, will be taking the lead on all soft goods merchandising and starting to expand into corporate merchandise as well. Look for more trunk shows and exciting new lines of merchandise. Upcoming Events Right off the bat is the FL/GA game on Saturday, November 2. The day previous is treated as Saturday Rules. As always, it will be a fun day on the course with lots of Blue and Orange and Red and Black. Wednesday, November 6 is the LXV Open, which is our Senior Member-Member. It is open to all gentlemen golf members who are 65 years of age and older. The price is $120 per player and includes breakfast, lunch, dinner, golf, cross country golf, carts, and awards. For the entry form, visit the Golf Shop or contact them at 904.389.0477. Lights Out Golf will be on Friday, November 8 at 6:00 pm. We'll light the way while you enjoy the course after dark. Beer, wine, and snacks will be provided. This is a walking-only event and space is limited so sign up today! Cost: $45 per person. 1 0 | N OV E M B E R / D EC E M B E R 2 0 1 9
November 16 & 17 will be the Senior Club Championship. The format for this event is 36-hole stroke play. There will be three divisions: Championship (55+), Super Senior (66-75), and Golden (76+). The championship flight will be a stroke play competition and all other flights will be stableford (Gross & Net). The deadline to register is Wednesday, November 14. Cost: $50 per player. Please note that this event has moved to Saturday and Sunday. The Clayton Riley Family Tournament will be played Sunday, December 15. This is Timuquana’s annual family event. Teams can be comprised of any vertical combination of relatives. The cost for each team of two is $30 plus a cart fee and includes prizes and the reception at 5:00 pm. To register for an 8:00 am or 1:00 pm shotgun, contact the Golf Shop at 904.389.0477. The first day of the Gator Bowl Pro-Am will be played at TCC on Thursday, December 19. The Gator Bowl Pro-Am is a two-day event with some of the best professionals and amateurs from our area. All regular play must be off of the course by 12:00 pm for the 12:30 pm shotgun start. Pace of Play The Golf Committee and Board have adjusted the current 4 hour pace of play to 4 hours and 10 minutes. We find that this pace is more appropriate for all demographics and skill levels and more in line with other clubs of similar course layout and stature. Considering this change the committee would like to emphasize the importance of adhering to this time and keeping pace with the group in front of you. Should groups have trouble maintaining this time, possible sanctions may arise. We hope that this change provides a more enjoyable experience for all. Winter Cart Path Restrictions Following poor weather in the winter of 2018 and cart path restrictions implemented for the USGA Four Ball, a number of members, players, and USGA officials commented on the improvements in the quality of turf conditions in the spring. This winter, to aid Alan Brown and his team in ensuring we continue to focus on the quality of turf on the course, we will be implementing a cart path restriction Tuesday–Thursday from January 7–March 19. Carts will need to be kept to paths only during these three days weekly during this period. For those that require a cart due to physical limitations, please see the Golf Shop. Those who have handicap placards will receive a flag for their Clint Avret, PGA cart during play. Director of Golf cavret@timuquana.net

Brian is an accomplished player and professional in the Mid-Atlantic where he was nominated for the 2017 Mid-Atlantic Assistant Professional of the Year. We’ll be rounding out 2019 with our annual Tennis MemberGuest November 8–10. We always strive to make this event better and better each year, and anticipate another fantastic event this year. Our ladies’ teams are at the halfway point of the season, and they’re all in the mix for the top spots in their respective divisions. We have started our new Ladies’ D-team, which competes on Saturdays, and everyone is having a blast learning this great sport. Our Junior programming continues to grow and thrive, and while our men’s Tri-level season is winding down, we look forward to the spring when they can get back in action. In 2020, our mission is to take our programming, socials, and events to an exciting new level. In early 2020, we’re eager to host the second annual Mixed Open, XGLOsive Tennis, and a unique interclub experience you will not want to miss! In the
