The Purpose & Power Issue

W

elcome to Today’s Purpose Woman magazine’s special Purpose & Power issue. I am overjoyed that God has given us the opportunity of sharing life together in the New Year, and I am enthusiastic for what lies ahead in 2023. We will continue our mission to fill the pages of Today’s Purpose Woman with the voices of faith, hope, purpose and power.

In this issue (Purpose & Power) Today’s Purpose Woman will introduce you to a collection of heartfelt and honest interviews with women who walk in purpose & power. These powerful stories highlight Christian female creatives, entrepreneurs, leaders, and authors who inspire and empower others through their work. You’ll be taken on a wonderful journey to see how these powerful women live their lives and use their works to encourage others to cultivate spiritual, professional, or personal growth.

All of the interviews and stories you read will be by me (Sherrell Valdezloqui). It is rare that you will find such raw and open interviews with successful Christain women who use their faith for a greater purpose. These women take their relationship with God very seriously, believing they’ve been put on this planet to impact others and serve His mission.

Some of the stories are eye-opening in how they deal with certain topics and explore the sense of purpose that comes with showing people the true power of God.

It’s a true celebration of faith and creativity. The women you’re about to hear from will inspire you to use God’s grace, love, and creativity in your everyday lives as well. Today’s Purpose Woman publication was originally created because the world lacked compelling stories from women of faith bringing glory to God. This section of the magazine is truly dedicated to fulfilling this mission by showing you women who walk in purpose & power. Enjoy the interview, read what these wonderful women have to say, and take lessons from them that you can apply to your daily lives.

It’s my hope that reading about these wonderful women will encourage you to put faith over fear and to step out in obedience to whatever assignment God has given you. Whether you are sharing a story/testimony, writing a book, or starting a business/ministry, we want this issue to give you the extra confidence needed to pursue these challenges.

Let this year be the year that you walk in Purpose & Power. God has left many opportunities and tools around us - it’s up to you to step out and use them!

A SECOND CHANCE

HOW MRS. CORPORATE AMERICA 2019 CANDI BRYAN USES HER SECOND CHANCE AT LIFE TO HELP OTHERS

Candi Bryan is a mother, stage three breast cancer survivor, speaker, advocate, morning show host, and R.E.N.E.W Women’s Global Outreach founder. R.E.N.E.W, which stands for Reaching Every Need for Every Woman, is an organization that focuses on helping disadvantaged women year-round. “We seek to encourage women to be whole-body, mind, and spirit in their daily lives.” Jeremiah 29:11 is the foundation the outreach stands on- For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord… “The goal is for every woman who comes in contact with R.E.N.E.W to know that they have a purpose and that God means for them to live well and live strong.”

Every October, R.E.N.E.W turns its focus to helping breast cancer survivors. As a breast cancer survivor herself, Candi overcame stage 3 breast cancer in 2017. She recounts the day she discovered a lump in her breast. “I was doing a self-exam when I found the lump. But by that time, it was already stage three breast cancer.” Candi acknowledges that if she wasn’t proactively checking her health, she might have missed the lump and not be here today.

Looking at Candi today with her hair-grown back and reconstructive surgery, you would have never known the battles she’s endured. She shares that she has undergone six months of chemo, two months of radiation, double mastectomy, major reconstructive surgery, and ongoing medication for ten years. And on top of that, in 2018, she lost her mom. “Those are some of the challenges I’ve gone through since 2016, but I’m standing here today as a living testimony that there is always a second chance, and I’m just really happy that I had mine.”

After Candi’s recovery, she co-founded “The Warriors Brunch” with Vanessa Echols – a yearly breast cancer survivor outreach.

Also, during her time of renewal, Candi connected with the MCA Organization (Ms./Mrs. Corporate America)- a business-friendly competition that mixes beauty and business, honoring corporate executives and entrepreneurs. The unique platform gives women in business a national stage to expand their brand and serve their community. “The organization encouraged me and gave me the confidence I needed to get up on stage, connect with women, and get back out into the world.” On June 22, 2019, Candi won Mrs. Corporate America 2019, amplifying her voice as an advocate and speaker. “I’ve had to do the work of going through mental healing and physical healing. And so, ultimately, it’s been a journey of body, mind, and spirit. And so, my encouragement for women everywhere is to focus on healing.”

In addition to advocating, ministry outreach, and speaking, Candi has a faith-based morning show called the Good Morning Show with Candi Bryan that broadcasts live every morning at 8:00 am on Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram. The show’s tagline is “Your Place For Faith In The Morning.” The show shares powerful interviews, survival stories, and more. “That’s my biggest baby project,” Candi said when we talked about her show. “I feel like the good morning show is extra special. We have a variety of guests with stories that range from domestic violence survivors to people who started a business that became successful. I’ve also interviewed women from other countries that impact others in their own local areas. The authors that have come through are probably the most intriguing because they’re telling their stories, and some of their books are amazing.”

No doubt Candi Bryan is a woman of faith that is boldly walking in her purpose. She continues to serve countless hours in her community and is a beacon of hope.

Trudy Lonesky

rudy Lonesky loves the Lord with all her heart, mind and soul. She is a wife, stay-at-home mom of four, author, and host of the Kingdom Mamas podcast for Christian mothers looking for a community of women to rally around them and come alongside them in parenting. On her podcast, Trudy addresses the good, the bad, and the ugly in today’s world. She covers topics such as the importance of our children standing confident in their identity in Christ, social media, worldly influences, and living our faith out loud.

Trudy has found her calling in cultivating authentic faith in the next generation. She believes that her mission is to come alongside kingdom parents to spur on and encourage them in raising disciples. The inspiration behind her calling derives from her children and God. “Seeing that the world is noisy, messy and lines are being blurred. It’s never been more important for children to know that God loves them, He has a well-thought-out plan already aligned for them and the courage to live it out,” she says. “God has broken my heart for what breaks His. It’s not something I take lightly. There’s kingdom work to be done in the next generation. They need a Savior and we hold the answer to their longing to fit in and be seen.”

Trudy hopes that she can encourage, empower, and equip parents to live boldly for God so they will impact the lives of their children and their children’s children. “God promises to bless us for a thousand generations. Our job as parents is to make Jesus real in our homes.” Trudy continues, “Do we pray when adversity strikes? Do we worship in unbelief? Our children are watching. Do we point them to Jesus daily? Does faith look like something worthy of following?”

Although Trudy wasn’t born in a Christian home, she recalls her parents doing the next best thing: dropping her off at church weekly.

“It was there in that tiny, small town, Maine church that I met the love of Jesus and the place where I would accept our Lord and Savior into my heart.”

Since then, God has been Trudy’s moral compass. “I don’t want to do anything that keeps me from hearing from God, getting to know Him better, and living out the life He has in store for me and my family,” she says.

Viewing the world from the perspective of God’s Kingdom and living by faith has helped Trudy during some of her most difficult times. One of those times she recalls concerned her daughter, who had suffered from suicidal thoughts.

“In those dark and scary times, I had to lean into God, trust that He would see her through, and surrender her to Him. He loves her. He loves her more than me, and that seems downright unfathomable. But He does. I had to trust and believe that she would be whole again. God showed up in mighty ways, as He always does.” Today, Trudy’s daughter is a warrior for God and is thankful that she went through to learn her identity in Christ. “God has a plan and a purpose for you. I pray you to have the courage to step out in faith and walk in the calling He’s placed over your life.”

Trudy is devoted to cultivating authentic faith in the next generation. She leaves this message for readers: “Take the next heavy, uncertain step. “I think the enemy wants to downplay our impact for the kingdom. What seems small and insignificant to us is HUGE to a God who has placed a call on our life. In that obedience to take the next step, He will give you further direction, guidance, and instruction. Feel the fear, know it isn’t from God because He doesn’t give you a spirit of fear, and do it anyway!”

Trudy is the author of Reclaim Her Heart, a 30-day devotional for moms raising teen girls. She is working on her new devotional, Confidently Crowned: 30 Days to Owning Your Identity in Christ.

EARTH AND IMAGES

Isabel Dellinger Candelaria

ON TRUSTING GOD TO GUIDE HER LIFE AND CAREER IN DESIGN

Isabel Dellinger Candelaria, Earth and Images’ principal designer and owner, appeared to have acquired all she desired. Her work was thriving; she married the man of her dreams, went to Italy, and attended galas regularly, yet she still felt something was missing.

In 2017, Isabel was diagnosed with stage IV cancer. During this process, she gave her life to Christ. “Within a few weeks of being diagnosed, God began to show me what I had been missing by doing it my way. Throughout the treatment, I consistently pursued learning how to live a life in Christ. In March 2020, I was baptized and continue to learn and practice in ways to deepen my devotion.” Faith has become Isabel’s passion.

Isabel, ambitious, motivated, confident, creative, soulful, loyal, and faithful, now feels she is on the right track and trusts God to steer her successful journey in life and the design profession.

What inspired you to start Earth and Images interior design firm? It was a combination of needing to be challenged creatively and intellectually and reevaluating my business plan due to the 2008 recession. I purchased Earth and Images as a home furnishings retail store in the summer of 2007. A year later, sales dropped 65%. By 2010, I had to do something to positively impact myself and my career, so I returned to school for my interior design certification.

28 | TODAY’S PURPOSE WOMAN 2023

It was the best move I could have made. By the end of 2012, I was starting to do projects. After the first one, I was hooked. I loved developing our process and being able to provide all services needed for a full project. My first new build project was published multiple times and awarded a spot on our Phoenix Home & Garden home tour. Success continues to unfold, God’s way of showing me I’m on the right path. In 2007, there was just my mom and I working, and now in 2022, there are nine of us. I love being a small business and providing careers for talented people in the design industry. We became much bigger than I thought we would, but I can’t say no to these opportunities to create more beauty. I am so grateful that God gave me this talent and the daily projects to use it.

What drives your design decisions? What are some of your biggest inspirations? Our firm is very client focused. We see it as our job to make their design dreams a reality. Generally, they come to us with ideas and styles they like, and we develop them throughout the design process. If they don’t know what their personal style is, then there’s a lot of exploration, which I love the abstractness of because it is creation in action. We use our expertise, skills, and talents to execute their design preferences. Our work is very technical, so we must have a good team with a variety of talents to get everything done.

My biggest inspirations are designs that invigorate the senses just the right way. I love perfectly lit spaces, that have excellent sound mediation, and visually invigorate the best moods and sensations.

How would you describe your creative process? Because I am highly sensitive, I can almost feel the direction a client wants the design to go, so it’s this process of bringing the abstract into being. I search for the essence of what will make the client happy and start pulling it together with tangible items.

What sets your work apart from other interior design firms? We are set apart visually because we do not have just one look. We are blessed to work in a variety of styles and palettes, so our portfolio is diverse. The common thread throughout each project is that they are all comfortable and elegant.

How do you feel your work impacts and inspires the lives of others? We go through so many decisions with our clients that by the time the house is done, we are fully aware of how they want to live, and we have made selections based on those preferences. In our projects, function is built into the beauty of the design. When spaces are perfectly proportioned and appointed, people feel good. Great design improves people’s lives, how they live, and their day-to-day experiences.

Inspiring the Next Generation

Davonne Dupart on inspiring the next generation through stories that entertain and educate.

www.liftedwingstudios.com

Davonne Dupart is an artist, award-winning filmmaker, educator, and executive director of Lifted Wings Studios, an animation production studio. Lifted Wings Studios inspires the next generation through stories that entertain and educate. Davonne is grateful for the opportunity God has given her to reach tens of thousands of children through her company. “It’s an exciting adventure, and I’m excited about expanding my team and our products to serve our community in more unique ways in 2023,” she adds. Davonne’s “why” is to nurture, and her faith serves as a moral compass in her life, sustaining her.

What is one issue or concern you feel needs to be discussed, and what can you provide as part of the solution? I’m concerned about what is being produced in the media, specifically shows and movies that target children. We’re in a society where a digital screen is constantly put in front of a child to keep them occupied and not all of it is beneficial for them. That’s why I started Lifted Wings Studios.

30 | TODAY’S PURPOSE WOMAN 2023

What life lesson did you learn the difficult way? Always have a contract! When I was starting out in the animation industry, I was offered a freelance position as an animator for a couple of months. All our conversations and agreements were through email, (which I didn’t know weren’t legally binding.) The studio needed someone to start immediately, and I needed the work. After a couple of weeks, I hadn’t gotten paid, and the studio was giving me the runaround. When I finally did get paid, it was about a third of the amount I was owed. This company did this to all the artists on the team and the studio went out of business immediately after the project was done. I contacted a lawyer who gave me sound advice but that was a difficult way to learn that lesson.

Tell us about one life experience you feel significantly shaped you into who you are today. This dates back years, but I had a very impactful teacher in middle school. She was the art teacher, and I wasn’t in her class, but she would spend her lunch break and time after school teaching me how to draw. She bought me my first portfolio as a surprise and helped prepare me to apply for art school. If it wasn’t for her, I don’t think I would have pursued my desire to be an artist.

Fear, shame, and regret. What advice would you give someone who is trying to overcome this obstacle?

I believe we live out our life purpose in stages/ phases/seasons. I also believe God is a God of order and won’t give us the next step until we’ve done the previous step. I experienced this when I was completing my Master of Fine Arts degree. I need this degree to be the educator God has called me to be. It took me 7 years to complete a 2-year program. I had to apply for readmission to finish my degree. Why did this take so long? Life happened. Providing for my day-to-day needs took priority over my degree completion. However, I began to experience hinderances in my career because I did not have my diploma. I felt ashamed because all my loved ones thought I’d graduated. I felt like a failure because this degree shouldn’t have taken me this long. Then I had a revelation. The diploma only has the date you finished, not the date you started. So, I reapplied and finished my thesis knowing this would open the next stage in my life. After I graduated (again) so many doors opened!

So, my advice to those who are struggling with fear, shame and regret is this: what matters most is how you finish! You may have a rocky start but finish the race strong!

DR. SONIA WHITE

On Faith, Giving Back and The Presidential Lifetime Achievement Awards.

Dr. Sonia R. White is highly respected for her humanitarian efforts on a global scale and believes in giving back. The Air Force Veteran, Radiology Health Professional and expert, Sonia R. Enterprises, L.L.C., founder, 5x Best Selling author, and mother of 3, has made it her mission to help others by utilizing her platform, abilities, experiences, and faith.

Dr. White’s accomplishments include the S.M.I.L.E. Foundation Inc., hosting the President’s Volunteer Service Awards (P.V.S.A.) in Houston, and her outreach initiative, The B.I.R.T.H. Project, “Bible Initiative Reaching The Homeless.”

Dr. White tells me that she has always had a heart for service and has enjoyed helping others since she was a child. Growing up in Waco, TX, she always dreamed big and on a global scale. She has been driven by those dreams, her heart for service, her desire to help others, and her faith.

In 2019, Dr. White founded the S.M.I.L.E. Foundation Inc., a 501c3 nonprofit inspired by both tragedy and triumph. Her passion for helping young minority men derives from the overflowing empowerment platforms for young women. As a mother of twin boys, she wanted to create a platform to empower young men after losing her brother to gun violence at a young age. “Preserving our youth to enjoy a successful and productive future is essential,” she states.

32 | TODAY’S PURPOSE WOMAN 2023
Photographs by I AM

It’s disheartening to see young minority men die at young ages and be set up for the prison system. I hope to provide as many resources as possible for young men to thrive.”

The foundation also provides STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) education, financial literacy and more.

Recently, Dr. White hosted the third annual Presidential Lifetime Achievement Awards led by Americorps at Hotel Zaza Museum District. This event has become recognized as an immense honor and a highly anticipated annual event. Documented as the largest ceremony to date, the organizers recognized prestigious community service volunteers nationwide and it was a sold-out event with over 430 attendees.

Donations from the Presidential Awards supported her foundation’s free Smart Men In Leadership Excellence (S.M.I.L.E) lunch and learn. The workshop sponsored ten young men ages 10-19 and granted them access to stock portfolios. Featured guest speakers included Dr. Mathew Knowles, City Council Elect Ivan Sanchez, community leader Pastor Jamail Johnson, and business expert Jerome D. Love. This year, Dr. White will create an intro radiology course for individuals seeking to enter the medical field and formulate partnerships with S.T.E.M. academies.

Dr. White also has an outreach program called The B.I.R.T.H. Project, The Bible Initiative Reaching The Homeless in Houston, Texas. This project is dedicated to reaching the homeless by giving them hope and inspiration through the teachings of Jesus Christ. Dr. White reveals that the B.I.R.T.H. Project had initially been on her mind for years, but she never carried it out. “I would always give money or food to the homeless. Some people did not want this. I had food thrown back at me by a homeless person, which hurt me deeply. She explains that because of this unpleasant experience, it took courage for her to reach out to the homeless again after a few years.

Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee. -Deuteronomy 3:16

More than anything, Dr. White wanted to give hope to those who had lost it. She started offering Bibles and inspirational books to the homeless in hopes they would be encouraged not to give up. If they desired more, she wanted them to know that their circumstances could change with God. As someone once homeless, Dr. White knows and understands the hope and strength the Bible provides to help overcome adversity.

In 2017, Dr. White received the Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award from former President Barack Obama. She gained notoriety for her outreach program, The B.I.R.T.H. Project, and has a Proclamation for this day from the Mayor of Houston, for its “Bible Initiative Reaching The Homeless”. Dr. White has always kept God first in her life, and He has been her foundation and rock. Dr. White graciously told me she wanted to share two Bible verses she meditates on that give her hope, courage and inspiration. Before she shares, she says, “The key to life for me has been keeping my Faith and Trust in Him always. I truly love giving back to others, it is a fulfillment in my soul.”

She then reads: Proverbs 11:25, A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed. And Jeremiah 29:11 “I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Dr. White spends her life believing that a mustard seed of Faith is all that is required for God to create miracles. “Always preserve your Faith,” she advises. “Read the Bible; it is the Living Word and can assist and lead you when no one is there to support or be there for you. Maintain your integrity, create boundaries, and most of all, do what brings you joy.”

Cherlyn M. Carby

fter struggling to find gentle, kid-friendly products for her daughter, who battled scalp psoriasis, which led to her hair loss. Cherlyn M. Carby, a woman of faith and a working single mom decided to create her own hair product gentle enough for babies and plant-based that would help her daughter grow her hair back.

The first product Cherlyn made was a hair oil with the primary ingredients coming from her mother’s garden. She handpicked the ingredients because they addressed scalp psoriasis, cradle cap, and eczema, common scalp conditions amongst children with naturally textured hair. At the time, Cheryln did not intend to enter retail. She just wanted to help her daughter grow back her hair. “I made enough oil that I could give away to family and friends. Ryan’s hair grew back quickly, and I received so much great feedback from my friends and family that it encouraged me to make more products.”

Within a few months, Cherlyn created a product line and built a team that would contribute to bringing LushUs Kids to the marketplace. Today Cheryln is the Founder and CEO of Skylar J’s LushUs Kids.

She is passionate about helping build confidence in children to boldly rock their naturally textured hair in today’s society. This includes creating a hair care system, providing education on haircare, and making wash days simplistic for parents. “As a single mother and working mom, I can identify with other moms who spend countless hours on their children’s naturally textured hair. I know the feeling of frustration of finding time to wear all hats in the household and workplace. So creating a hair care system for moms that would make wash days simple and give more time to other responsibilities was a goal of mine,” she says.

How do you view your work as a vocation—a call from and a duty to God?

Edification is one of the main elements behind this work. I believe I am called to edify moms, dads, and caregivers within the natural hair community.

How do you feel your faith has played a role in your journey and decision to create Skylar J’s LushUs Kids?

My faith has been the driving force during my journey to create LushUs Kids, but the idea came from the Most High. He alone gets all the glory for bringing this to manifestation. Staying connected to the Holy Spirit has helped guide me to make wise decisions for the brand.

What message do you want to relay to those you are called to serve?

Who the Most High calls He also equips, everything you need for this season and every season in your life you can find in HIM. Learning to consistently give everything to Jesus and disciplining yourself to stay in HIM will provide you with the strength, joy and peace you need to fulfill your calling.

In 2017 Candice Coffey prayed a deep prayer that reflected the cry of her heart: “Lord, I surrender my life to you. I don’t want my life to look like anyone else’s, and I don’t want to be comfortable. What do you want me to do to serve you? Use me!” Candice had been in education for 15 years but was open to whatever God wanted her to do. Several months later, she had an unforgettable dream. “I stood at a department store makeup counter and picked up a beautiful tube of lipstick. It was gold and in black writing, said: “Psalm 34.” I then picked up other makeup compacts that also had Scriptures on them. When I woke up the following day, I read Psalm 34”. It was clear to Candice what God wanted her to do. “He called me to create a makeup line that proclaims the Word of God. He called me to encourage the literal application of God’s Word to our own faces.”

Candice had the same question that many ask when God calls them to an unfamiliar place. “But who am I, Lord? I have no experience, no contacts, no knowledge of the cosmetics industry!” God responded to Candice’s questions and concerns by showing her first-hand that when He calls you to it, He will qualify you for it!”

Today, Candice is the CEO and Founder of EverBe, a faith-based cosmetic brand. “EverBe is no longer a dream – these products are a beautiful reality and a direct message from the Father to His daughters. I’m just the messenger and am humbled to be serving as his hands and feet.”

Tell me more about your cosmetic brand EverBe.

EverBe is a relatively new line of makeup that draws inspiration from Psalm 34. It is intended to change the face of the cosmetics industry as the first-ever beauty brand to celebrate a woman’s God-given identity. To combat the hyper-sexualized messages aimed at women today, EverBe reminds women what and who the word of God says they are: Favored, Fruitful, Pure, Humble, Radiant, and Redeemed.

What is the meaning behind the word EverBe?

Every woman is a masterpiece, a one-of-a-kind creation and dream birthed by God before the earth existed. Embedded deep within each woman are pieces of her Creator that will never perish. Hope, a mission to love others and the call to worship and praise her almighty God. It is infinite. As children of God, we are eternal beings who go from this life to the next.

EverBe is a reminder that whatever we face in this life, good or bad, we will EverBe His – never alone and never separated from the Creator.

This relationship exists at all times…forever! EverBe is a covenant between our heavenly Father and His sons and daughters that will never be broken.

Tell me a little about EverBe products and the purpose they serve to women.

One of the most unique qualities of EverBe is the concept of “application.” The brand encourages women to “Speak,” “Apply,” and “Be” who Scripture says they are. Each of our products is based on Psalm 34. And so, when a woman applies our lip butter, based on Psalm 34:1, we encourage her to

say aloud, ‘…my lips are full of perpetual praise,’ as she applies it. Likewise, with the eyeshadow, she would say ‘…I will gaze upon him, join my life with his, and joy will come.’ For our bronzer and highlighter, she might say,’ I will never wear that shame face again.’ The very application of the makeup becomes an important way to affirm and declare the Truth every time you look in the mirror. Women not only use clean products on their faces, but they create a lifestyle of partnering with God to reclaim the mirror.

EverBe’s makeup line includes:

• Lip Butter in shades: Favor, Fruitful and Pure – based on Psalm 34:1

• Eye Shadow in shades: Humble and Redeemed – based on Psalm 34:5

• Highlighter Stick in Radiant –based on Psalm 34:5

• Bronzer Stick in Glory – based on Psalm 34:5

• Eyeliner in Eternal – based on Psalm 34:5

• Brow Pencils in Victory and Triumph – based on Psalm 34:5

What message would you like to convey to the world?

Being a woman of God is more than being meek and mild. We are compassionate warriors created to partner with God to reclaim all of His creation. We are loved deeply and passionately by our Creator, and following Him is the adventure of a lifetime. Our responsibility isn’t just ourselves either, but it is also to raise up the next generation with this same truth.

rtavia Taylor is a mother, grandmother, minister, business owner of Healing and Zen Experience, and founder of Votus Voice of the Unspoken nonprofit organization. She has merged her calling as a preacher with her career as a massage therapist to provide wholeness and healing to the mind, body, and spirit via prayer, empowerment, and touch. Whether praying for healing or deliverance or helping men, women, individuals, and families get beyond abuse by assisting them in rediscovering their true identity in Christ through her nonprofit, Ortavia lets her light shine. She regards her faith as solid and challenges everyone to live and walk out their faith boldly.

What is one issue or concern you feel needs to be discussed, and what can you provide as part of the solution?

I feel domestic violence needs to be discussed more because it’s happing so frequently, and nothing is being done. They may bring it to the news, and just like that, it’s gone. I share knowledge to assist people in identifying red flags, gaining the bravery to speak up, connecting them to safe spaces, and empowering them to reclaim their confidence and independence ( because the fear of not being able to survive keeps you stuck).

What life lesson did you learn the hard way?

I learned the hard way that everything that looks good is not good for you. When you lack something for so long, and it appears with the qualities you desire, it is easy to overlook the red flags. Like I always say, every choice you make has a good or bad consequence.

Tell us about one life experience you felt significantly shaped you into who you are today.

Being in an abusive relationship and surviving shaped my life to be who I am today.

(1) most people don’t make it out, and (2) because I understood who was behind the operation, I was able to increase in faith and prayer to discover the enemy’s strategies to defeat him and help others do the same. I was able to reclaim my purpose and walk with the courage and confidence that God intended for me to develop into the warrior that I am.

Fear, shame, and regret have paralyzed many from embracing their life purpose. What advice would you give to help someone overcome this obstacle? I once was living in a prison of fear. I allowed the negative thoughts Satan was feeding me to isolate me. I was afraid of succeeding. From a little girl, I was always thinking of ways to be successful and how I would own property, multiple businesses and schools. But because of the thoughts I was receiving, I began to self-sabotage, thinking I was not qualified as I didn’t have a high school diploma but a GED. Then I came across 1 timothy 1:7- For God has not given us the spirit of fear but of love power and a sound mind. Also, Romans 12:2: Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God. Those scriptures shaped my path to a better future. Although I had many failures, I’m on the right path with a new successful massage practice fulfilling God’s purpose in every session. I pushed through by standing on the promises of God in faith, trusting His leading every step of the way. I became intentional in my pursuit of purpose.

Is there anything else compelling you would like to share? Remember, silence and secrecy allow negative experiences to control your life. Be Bold! Be Open!

Jasmine Stokes

On empowering women to rise to a “Greater” level in business and life.

Jasmine Stokes, affectionately known as Coach Jas, is a certified master life coach. She aims to help women with their faith walk, mirror experiences, entrepreneurial journey, and foundational structure, and truly see their GREATER selves in life and business. With over eight years of experience in learning and development, 15 years of experience in Corporate America, and a bachelor’s degree in business management and finance, Jasmine is well versed in identifying communication and accountability strategies for focusing on the development of one’s strengths and ultimate wins.

Jasmine is the founder of The Greater Me Consulting, a Coaching and Consulting business for faith-based minority women. The sole purpose is to empower women to their next level in business and life, which Coach Jas refers to as their “greater” level. Jasmine has found her true calling in the form of teaching women how to not only survive in their life and business journey but to thrive.

42 | TODAY’S PURPOSE WOMAN 2023

She offers products geared towards confidence, empowerment, self-healing, and entrepreneurship. The Consulting portion of Jasmine’s business focuses specifically on women entrepreneurs and their entrepreneurship journey. She provides Life Coaching Certification training and courses to assist with starting and sustaining their businesses, personal growth, and continued business product development.

A “Yes” to God’s will led Jasmine to her calling to the marketplace. In January 2015, she encountered God on a new level. She had no idea that her “yes” would include moving to another city, getting married, her children being blessed, new opportunities in her career, ignited purpose, and a new level in God being awakened. “I never saw entrepreneurship in my journey, and God not only placed it there, but He also used my husband to speak it into me, over me, and support me in this journey.

Late one night, during one of our deep talks, my husband said, “Babe, why don’t you do this for real?” “This” was coaching, helping, praying, interceding, developing, inspiring, teaching, and motivating. I had only seen Iyanla Vanzant (who I call my Auntie, mind your own business, lol) as a life coach. I didn’t know it was something I could actually do.” Jasmine explains that her business journey is not normal because she’s a faith-based entrepreneur and business.

“Learning that God was and is the head of my business was so different from my normal corporate journey. I became bold, authentic, and transparent when I realized God not only purposed me for such a time as this but also equipped me with what was needed to carry ministry and business. I don’t proclaim to be a minister or pastor, but I am a praying, faith-filled powerhouse for God, and it feels good to lead in business with this.” Jasmine says she truly knows and believes her success is based on this call of God leading her here. “I teach women business acumen, how to do it with God first, how to incorporate God and prayer in their business strategies and plans, and how to serve in their purpose and passion for seeing a profit. Here I am, three years in business, now a full-time entrepreneur and literally walking by faith and seeing success.”

Greater is He that is within me than he that is within the world.

1 John 4:4 is the scripture Jasmine’s business is built on. “We are all purposed and created for greatness because God is greater, and He lives in us. We can do all things with Him, and we should do all things that ensure He gets the glory,” she says.

Jasmine truly believes that if it wasn’t for God, she wouldn’t be here, divinely connecting with women she would have never met in “normal” life. “Every encounter, every woman I meet, and every woman I coach has come from God,” she continues. “God uses me to confirm His word, to be a living example of His grace and mercy, of being broken and put back together by Him only. Everything I have gone through was for me to turn around and help my next sister. That is my duty.”

While Jasmine helps women start coaching and consulting businesses, God uses her to deposit seeds of faith and hope in them. Jasmine claims that God has called a new remnant to the marketplace, and it is women of faith who have the knowledge and power in the boardroom and the prayer closet. “I am one of them and a forerunner to help others acknowledge they are too,” she says.

Aleks Jelenic

leks Jelenic is a Mindset and Business Coach that teaches ambitious entrepreneurs and those with a burning desire to follow the prompting of the spirit, embody their Authentic Selves with unshakable confidence, master the mind and eliminate disbelief so they can start living the life they were called to live!

What are your core values, and how do you personally live up to them?

My core values are Faith, Authenticity, and openness. I live by these values every day, and in everything I do. My faith gets me through all the challenges I face in all areas of life and business. I strive to bring out my authentic self in all I do; when I sense I am not, I know where the work needs to be done. I am always working on being open to new ideas, new thoughts, perceptions, etc.

How do you view your work as a vocation—a call from and a duty to God?

I was always intuitive and could see further than most, but I suppressed it because I feared it. When I did the mindset work and changed how I saw myself, I realized that this intuition was a blessing from God. I feel that my intuition is a blessing in helping others. It allows me to connect with my clients much deeper and help guide them through whatever situation they face.

Who are your ideal clients?

My ideal client is an entrepreneur who wants to grow their business but feels stuck. Or someone who desires to become an entrepreneur and transition from their current career or lifestyle but is still determining what they would do or if it’s possible for them.

What techniques do you use to push clients out of their comfort zones?

I help my clients see the end result and the big vision for themselves through a visualization exercise to hold that image in their mind to pull them through their comfort zone and into a life of Purpose.

What should your clients expect to achieve by the end of their sessions with you?

By the end of a 1-1 call with me, you can usually expect an aha moment, clarity about the solutions for your current situation, and uplifted energy.

What message do you want to relay to those you are called to serve and impact this season?

Now is the time to do what you feel called to do. Step out of the “if this then that” or “when this then that” mentality. I felt called to hire a coach for many years. I kept saying, “if I make more money, then I will hire someone to help me,” or “When I achieve a lot of success in this career then I will be worthy enough to pursue my dreams/ purpose.”

Let me tell you. There is no better time than NOW. If you feel called to reach out, if my story aligns with you, then reach out. You can stay in your own way for much longer by not reaching out for a hand. I help people get out of their own way and step into their authentic selves, so they start living their Purpose now.

Dr. Monique Flemings is a wife, mother, conference speaker, educator, teacher, minister, entrepreneur, and author who has served in various ministry and leadership capacities since 7. Dr. Monique is a leader in the healthcare industry, academia, and other community organizations. She is the CEO and founder of Monique Flemings Enterprises and The Ambidextrous Woman Academy™ and is passionate about women leaders embracing their authentic voices and becoming comfortable in their own brilliance.

Dr. Monique describes herself as a woman of faith who lives through prayer and faith. “Many watch and do not understand when I make moves because it looks crazy, but these are faith moves. It’s fun and scary at the same time. I have learned how to embrace and enjoy the journey.”

What is one issue or concern you feel needs to be discussed, and what can you provide as part of the solution? I am a solutionist for women finding their voices. That means finding their why and embracing it. Often, women are made to feel that their voice does not matter and are left in the background. We are taught to support others, which is admirable. But supporting others without getting support is the biggest form of abuse I see out there. It’s everywhere. I see in the local church, corporate world...I see the abuse of not supporting women in their authenticity. When a woman finds the courage to stand up, she is ostracized. This is done in all areas. This abuse is afflicted by other women as well. I am a solution for women’s voices because it’s time to be unapologetically unmuzzled.

What life lesson did you learn the hard way? It took me years to learn how to embrace my uniqueness.

It was years before I understood and appreciated my voice. Now, I am passionate about helping other women enjoy this freedom.

Tell us about one life experience you felt significantly shaped you into who you are today. Becoming an Autism Mom created a space in me that was dormmate. It takes an incredible amount of boldness, tenacity, and courage to walk in these shoes. I commend every Autism Mom out there. This is an incredibly difficult journey. Yet, in fighting for our son’s voice, I actually found my voice. I found what was necessary for my life and what wasn’t, and I started cleaning up and creating new spaces for my voice. It has been so refreshing and liberating.

Fear, shame, and regret have paralyzed many from embracing their life purpose. What advice would you give to help someone overcome this obstacle?

As an overcomer of fear and fearbased thinking, I have many strategies for women. I teach and coach in this area because I see many women struggling with procrastination, perfectionism and people-pleasing. I call it the three Ps. All of these three Ps are rooted in fear. It’s not as easy as having more faith because you can have faith and fear simultaneously. I know that because that was me. Fear is the paralyzed form and is not broken until you embrace the unconditional love of God. The opposite of fear is love....not faith. We have been given the wrong strategy for too long, which is why we continue to be defeated in this area.

SHEYA L. CHISENGA

On finding God through uncertainty and how she inspires through her business, The Woman Christian CEO .

Many would find it hard to believe that Sheya L. Chisenga, founder of It’s My Time to Rise Business Institute for Women Leaders and the creator of The Woman Christian CEO, struggled with her identity while growing up as a pastor’s daughter. Her parents were leaders within the community, raising Sheya with a different mindset from children she knew. “My parents were not your typical leaders, and because of that, they faced a lot of backlash from other Christians who didn’t quite understand their unique calling,” says Sheya.

She loved growing up in a Christian home but wanted more for herself than being a preacher’s daughter. Her struggle to find her true self wasn’t completely internal. Sheya went above and beyond in search of her purpose and distinct qualities, but that brought its own set of challenges. “This led me down a path of seeking validation from sources that honestly meant me harm.” Her self-esteem was at an all-time low, and a lack of self-confidence left her soul and her spirit deeply wounded.

Never did she imagine that the hardships and identity crisis were God’s way of leading her to a life of purpose and influence. The obstacles were opportunities, and the hurtful experiences were stepping stones for Sheya as she turned her life around at 28 and discovered what she was meant to do!

When this realization hit her, she left the comfort of Michigan and moved to California, stepping out on faith to seek something significant. “Of course, I did get a lot of push back from my family, but looking back I could see that this was all because the old Sheya had set a pattern of “not finishing what I had started” and always being fearful of the unknown. Fear has a way of crippling people to stunt their destiny’s.” But she didn’t let the old fears hold her back. She adds: “I felt in my heart that something greater was out there for me, and I was willing to take the risk to go after it.”

To this day, she thinks moving to California was the best decision of her life!

Away from the home she always knew, Sheya discovered herself and embarked on a journey of healing designed by God for her. She says, “I began to know God for myself as a healer & provider.”

It strengthened her relationship with Him, making her realize He was not angry with her and wanted her to have the best.

they found their identity in other areas it has hindered them from going to the next level in their life and business,” says Sheya.

Sheya also created The Woman Christian CEO Facebook community for women who desire to earn $10,000+ in their coaching business doing what they love, and are called and chosen to do in the marketplace. According to Sheya these are women who may work a 9-to-5 but they have a goal to become full-time and/ or work towards retiring so that they can fully walk in their calling as coaches or consultants. “ I honestly don’t look at it as just the typical Facebook “community”, our group is truly a family, and this is what makes it unique. Many of our ladies have extended their communication to meeting up, supporting each other at events, and even in their coaching programs.” Sheya is proud of the community she has helped build, for it’s something that extends beyond her vision and caters to the dreams and aspirations of other women leaders.

It was time for me to discover God’s plan for my life, away from the familiar and what I thought were failures.”

Through her profound faith, Sheya came to know that preaching was more than being an evangelist or a missionary. “God wants us to infiltrate the marketplace to be a witness and show His love to others.” Finally finding her purpose and meaning in life, she founded The Woman Christian CEO, a place for faith-based coaching and leadership training to empower women who’ve been through challenging experiences in life. Her own search for identity helped her understand women who seek something similar.

“They know that God has called them to greatness, but because

Sheya is proud of the women who pursue God’s plan and follow the path set out by God. “Any other path that you attempt to take will lead to distractions and will ultimately cause you to miss out on the plan that God really has for you,” it’s the advice she gives to every woman attempting to change her life. When asked how to stay focused on His plan, Sheya says, “The way that you do this is by spending time in prayer and meditation; knowing that He desires for you to know Him and learn to depend wholeheartedly on Him.”

ontessa Drayton is a devout Christian, a devoted wife and mother, and a native of Charleston, South Carolina. She is a speaker, self-published author and Certified Coach focusing on Purpose and Mindset. Passionate about people’s emotional and spiritual well-being, Contessa aims to help Faith-Based Women of Color in the areas of Individual Purpose Discovery and Positive Mindset through her coaching service. Her services are designed to assist customers in unlocking and propelling them into their distinct missions and Kingdom Assignments in the Marketplace.

Contessa’s faith serves as a Guidepost and Navigation System to everything she’s assigned and called to. Her ultimate goal is to reconnect women back to Jesus. “I am charged to keep them accountable towards their purpose goals as they rediscover at the core who they are. God desire’s for his children to represent Him from a pure and refined place. We will never be perfect, but we are called to be effective while positively impacting the Kingdom of God,” she says.

What is one issue or concern you feel needs to be discussed, and what can you provide as part of the solution?

One issue that needs to be addressed is that many women haven’t unpacked their inherited negative belief systems and feel stuck in a holding pattern from their past. The impact has prevented women from fully showing up in their personal life, the marketplace, relationships, etc. I was once that woman, and I’m in the position to champion women through Godly counsel and mental strategy to help propel them into their purpose and destiny.

What life lesson did you learn the hard way? A life lesson I had to learn the hard way was that everyone will not understand or agree with my God assignment, which is ok.

God will often test us to see if we choose to live for man or Him. As you can see, I chose God and Me. The best decision one can ever make!

Tell us about one life experience you felt significantly shaped you into who you are today

Once lost and bound by my past pain and unhealed wounds, I was delivered and set free in the Summer of 2019. I am aware that my healing and life calling is not just for me alone but to point others to freedom in Jesus Christ and demonstrate what’s possible for other women.

Fear, shame, and regret have paralyzed many from embracing their life purpose. What advice would you give to help someone overcome this obstacle?

Fear, shame, and condemnation are real hindrances. For many years, they held me back from doing the internal work necessary to push through to the other side of freedom. I remember Holy Spirit speaking to me before my commitment to healing from my past. He said that if I did not surrender my past once and for all, my life would be cut short. I chose to partner with the Lord; the rest has been history. My advice would be for my precious sister to know that God can handle everything about your life in its totality and He loves you. Simply trust and allow Him in. He is the only one who can mend every broken piece back together again better than you can ever imagine. Your latter days shall be better than your former.

Is there anything else compelling you would like to share?

God has a special purpose and a plan for your life. You have permission to discover who God created you to be and pursue His best for your life. I declare you will do mighty exploits for the Kingdom of Almighty God.

REDEFINING A WOMAN’S WORTH FOUNDER

anelle Renee is a mother, mentor, author, poet, entrepreneur, podcast host, redefinition, relationship coach, and the founder of Redefining A Woman’s Worth & Redefining My Worth LLC. She is deeply committed to seeing women heal, become whole, and live unapologetically in their worth and purpose. Janelle’s faith influences how she serves and impacts the lives of others in the sense that she consistently demonstrates love, compassion, and grace to all people. Her faith inspires her hope and ability to generously give her resources, time, and talents to others in need. Janelle shares that even when she’s exhausted, her love for the Lord’s people keeps her going. “I believe in the impossible and that nothing is impossible with God, that no one is too far gone for God’s love.”

What is one issue or concern you feel needs to be discussed, and what can you provide as part of the solution?

One concern that needs to be discussed is the huge barrier between receiving Jesus to be saved and becoming whole and learning to embody a godly woman’s virtues, behavior, and character. I have found that the church is full of saved but broken, unhealed women who tend to operate in the same manner as they did in the world. When a woman begins to attend church but isn’t aware of church etiquette or dress code, they get unwelcomed stares or disrespect instead of love. These women need to be taught, not judged. This is why the Lord gave me the assignment to “Restore His Daughters.’” My entire ministry was created to be a solution to this disheartening issue.

What life lesson did you learn the hard way?

I learned the hard way that it doesn’t matter how much of an abundance of money or resources you have. If you lack the wisdom, skills, and discipline to manage it, you will lose it. It’s better to manage little than to squander much.

Tell us about one life experience you felt significantly shaped you into who you are today.

One life experience that shaped me into who I am today is when I was in my last toxic and abusive relationship. It forced me to look at myself to realize some issues and brokenness kept me in the vicious cycle of unhealthy relationships. I could no longer blame my ex for everything. I had to take responsibility for my part in allowing myself to be mistreated in the name of love. This led me to go down my healing and journey to Redefining My Worth.

Is there anything else compelling you would like to share?

Embracing your purpose is not about the absence of fear but about your faith being bigger. You will have to do it scared, take the leap and trust that God will not fail you. The Lord’s grace will take you places you can’t imagine when you’re obedient to fulfill His will for your life, and many will be impacted for the glory of God!

ancy J. Lewis is a leading motivational/inspirational keynote speaker, trainer, author, and executive coach with over 26 years of experience as President of Progressive Techniques, Inc. She is the founder of Rehoboth Christian Business Executive Coaching Academy (RCBECA), where she is passionate about people living authentic lives and being intentional as they walk in their God-given purpose & destiny. Nancy’s desire it that individuals tap into the greatness that God has placed inside of them so they can live a fulfilled and blessed life!

As an ordained minister and marketplace evangelist, Nancy coaches and trains leaders and their teams to be their very best. As an executive coach, she feels blessed that God has given her the gift to help others take control of their lives and realize the importance of selfcare and self-love.

Nancy describes her faith as being critical to everything she does. “As the word of God tells us, without faith, it is impossible to please God.” When Nancy experiences rough circumstances, she shares that she strives hard to maintain her faith and confidence in God. She has witnessed her faith moving mountains. Although Nancy doesn’t always get it right, she has learned the power of repentance and humility when her faith weakens. “We have to fight the good fight of faith in every area of our life. We need to surround ourselves with like-minded people who call us out when we get out of faith and remind us to get back to faith.”

When working and coaching others, Nancy reminds them of the importance of having faith and calling them out when they speak doubt and defeat. “I remind them that God only attends faith parties, period. I am humbled and blessed that God allows me to share the gifts He has placed inside of me with others. My favorite scripture is…Luke 1:37: For with God nothing shall be impossible.”

What is one issue or concern you feel needs to be discussed, and what can you provide as part of the solution?

One thing that needs to be discussed is that business professionals need to ensure they walk in their authenticity and honor their word to others. The world is very small, and everybody is connected to someone. I encourage my clients and colleagues to be true to their identity and under-promise and over-deliver. You never know who can influence and open a door for you. Be kind and operate in authenticity as a way of life! It will serve you well. One of my Nancyisms is, “You can be a first-rate you or a second-rate someone else.” Authenticity allows you to be a first-rate you!

Fear, shame, and regret have paralyzed many from embracing their life purpose. What advice would you give to help someone overcome this obstacle? I encourage women to let go of the shame and guilt of their past and don’t allow it to block the blessings God has for them as they determine to walk in their purpose. Take the lesson and leave the baggage. Your past is not your future. When I went through my divorce, it was a painful and difficult time in my life. What I learned and share with other people who have gone through this is, there is life after divorce. Forgive yourself, let God heal your heart, and truly fall in love with the Jesus in you. That is what I did, and God healed me. I minister that message to others now when the opportunity presents itself.

Remember, God has you! So, my challenge of walking through my divorce has allowed me to encourage, empower and equip women and men to keep going after a divorce because God still loves you. As I minister and share my story, God gets the GLORY!

LAUREN C. NELSON

On assisting women in living well and on purpose.

Lauren C. Nelson is an empowerment coach, servant leader, and speaker. She is also the founder of Partner for Impact, a consulting firm that promotes workplace belonging, empowerment, and inclusiveness. Indeed, she is deeply committed to assisting women in living well and on purpose. Lauren believes God constantly makes her encounter women who need help birthing the greatest version of themselves and the gifts inside them, which is why she founded The Powerhouse Era coaching program.

Furthermore, Lauren also gives back to the community by mentoring first-generation young professionals needing career help. As a first-generation corporate professional, she knows the challenges of rising through the corporate ranks, which is why she works so hard to open doors and connect individuals in need wherever she can.

Lauren’s faith serves as a driving force in her work. Faith is at the heart of everything she does, from customer interactions to the content she creates. She aims to produce meaningful material that might bring people joy and inspiration. She explains that if anything does not enhance, bless, provide value, or align, she and her team will not pursue it.

What is one issue or concern you feel needs to be discussed, and what can you provide as part of the solution?

One issue that I often discuss is toxic workplace culture. Many business owners (myself included) left corporate for a reason. A recent study found that 25% of people who leave a job cite “toxic company culture” as the reason for leaving.

While some people leave to start their businesses, change careers, or leave the workforce, millions stay in those conditions their entire adult lives. Think about the impact on the mind, body, spirit, and quality of life.

In my consulting business, Partner for Impact, I have helped companies evolve their work environment, resolve conflict, and build a healthier space for their employees. And to directly help affected employees who want a path to freedom, I have my coaching program, The Powerhouse Era.

What is one life lesson you learn the hard way?

I learned the hard way that no matter how much effort you put into something, sometimes it’s just not enough. That was the reality of my corporate career. I remember working tirelessly on projects for months, struggling with poor treatment to “earn my stripes.” I bought into the lie that I had to work harder, longer hours than others on the team just to be taken seriously for promotions. It was heartbreaking, disheartening, and terrible for my health. I got the promotion only to leave the job two years later.

My lesson was self-respect and knowing my worth. After that experience, I would only take work that served me at the highest level first!

Tell us about one life experience you feel significantly shaped you into who you are today. My father died from health issues in his 40s. My half-brother recently died from a car accident in his 30s; he was two years older than me. These experiences deeply impacted me forever.

59

They taught me to live with urgency and to make the most of my time here on this earth. I now live, plan, love, and move promptly on purpose. We don’t know when God will call us home. I don’t know, but I do know this: I will be in divine alignment and still on divine assignment when he calls me.

Fear, shame, and regret have paralyzed many from embracing their life purpose. What advice would you give to help someone overcome this obstacle?

Fear is the biggest blessing blocker!

For years, I let my fear keep me in place and away from my potential. It was fear within myself and fear projected on me by people around me.

Since I was a teenager, I wanted to start my own business, speak, coach, create content, and so much more, but I didn’t know how to get started. I feared messing up, so I played it safe - went to college, took safe jobs, and preoccupied my time with entertainment instead of entrepreneurship. And the people I hung around did the same too.

One day, the dissatisfaction became too much. I had to decide: continue down the safe path I grew to hate or face my fears by doing what I felt led to do. I chose to face my fears; as a result, I’ve experienced incredible success and fulfillment.

What did I do? I took the time to learn what I didn’t know and then applied it. As an entrepreneur, Google, books, YouTube, social media, and mentors have been my teachers. Learning and teaming up with people who knew what I didn’t know helped me build, launch, and grow my business and brand. Fear will block your blessing if you let it!

Is there anything else compelling you would like to share or discuss?

To all Today’s Purpose Woman readers, please know that you have a choice as long as you have breath. You can move ahead or stay in place, but the choice is yours. Believe in yourself, trust your instincts, don’t be afraid to take risks when necessary, and surround yourself with other people who want to see you succeed.

Latisha B. Russell is a recognized figure on the topic of child sexual abuse and trauma. Speaking from a platform of her own harrowing experiences, she has made it her mission-to create brave spaces for candid, educational conversations that expose the true impact of sexual abuse and trauma experienced by children, teens and young adults by sharing her story of triumph through perseverance and resilience.

A voice for the voiceless, Latisha considerately navigates the, often raw, sensibilities and effects of sexual abuse with survivors, and others who may need assistance in navigating this taboo, grim topic. After having experienced a “Tish Talk”, many walk away with renewed confidence and vigor knowing, they, too, can overcome the shame, the story, just as she has done!

The NAKED TRUTH

A Conversation with Latisha B. Russell

Known as a coach, speaker, mentor, author, and recognized figure on child sex abuse. Latisha B. Russell is on a mission to reconcile trauma, restore hope, and relieve stigmas among those who have endured childhood sexual abuse and trauma. Her experience with childhood sexual trauma is firsthand. She is a SURVIVOR. Her smile comes with a painful story and a message of transparency that we all desire to live by.

It is Latisha’s personal experience that has fueled her passion and desire to help others heal. “Many people see the healed version of someone but miss what it takes to be on the other side. Healing isn’t linear. It’s ugly, it’s scary, it’s lonely but it’s necessary! As a survivor of trauma, each day brings a sense of peace and fulfillment.

Each day forces you to use your “get back up” muscle. I had to learn that healing had to happen for me. Not because I needed validation but because I needed peace.”

For several years, beginning at seven, Latisha’s mother’s second husband sexually abused her. Dealing with this abuse would set the stage for years to come. “I was a child who never experienced having a first love of a father. I grew up in a physically abusive household. My mother loved me, but the abuse was all she knew, so how could she protect me.” It took Latisha years to process the level of abuse she endured in her lifetime. It wasn’t just sexual abuse; it was emotional and mental abuse. Latisha had to learn how to sit with it and love herself—opening up and writing her memoir was

64 | TODAY’S PURPOSE WOMAN 2023

integral to her healing. Latisha’s memoir, The Naked Truth, is a 12-round match depicting “one fighters” story. The Naked Truth is a raw, unfiltered version of the sexual abuse Latisha endured and how this set the trajectory of her life. One of Latisha’s experiences shared in The Naked Truth is the physically abusive relationships she thought were normal. Latisha mentions how her definition of love was toxic. “If there were no fights, no deep hurt and crazy passion, it wasn’t love. If we didn’t cut each other deep, it wasn’t love. What’s a relationship without a few bruises and a broken heart?” This was the life Latisha knew until her 30’s. She secretly spiraled until she was finally tired of being tired and hit her version of rock bottom. From abuse to promiscuity to depression, Latisha fought her way to healing.”

According to Latisha, she wrote The Naked Truth from the perspective of a liberated adult and her mission to set others free. She states that writing her memoir wasn’t for her. It is for women and girls who don’t have a voice. “ I wrote the Naked Truth so others will believe they are worthy and there is peace after the storm. The minute you shed light on your truth is the moment you regain your power.”

When Latisha is not crusading for the children of others, she loves doting on her own daughters and spending time with extended family, friends, working out and traveling. Whether a mom, HR professional or child sexual survivor, you couldn’t ask for a better champion in our children’s lives.

Crystal Cunningham

On her Amazon Best-Seller Anthology, No More Residue.

All the way from New York—the Big Apple, and currently residing in Atlanta, Georgia, Crystal Cunningham is a 7x best-selling author, speaker, coach, entrepreneur, and anthology strategist. She coaches women of faith on writing, self-publishing, and launching their signature books. She also teaches them how to successfully increase their brand visibility, creditability, and profitability in the marketplace.

At the age of 16, Cunningham ran away from home, and that one decision altered her life. At the age of 28, she made another decision, which changed the trajectory of her life forever. “In 2019, while attending a conference, I was approached and asked to be a part of an anthology.” Cunningham saw this as an opportunity to share a part of her story she had never shared with the world. “I thought it was the perfect opportunity for me to share how I was able to reinvent myself and discover the real ME!

66 | TODAY’S PURPOSE WOMAN 2023

I did not look like what I went through because there was No More Residue of my past. I wanted to share how my past no longer had power over my life and how I took ownership of my decisions. I wanted to share the lessons I learned when I looked into the mirror. But that part of my story never manifested in that anthology.” Crystal later learned that her story did not manifest in that book because God called her to host her own anthology. “Isaiah 61 tells me that I have been anointed to help set the captive free and lose them from bondage. No More Residue – Vol.1 is how it all began,” she says.

In her latest work, No More Residue, a compilation of narratives by seventeen women, Crystal guides power-filled, timely authors who share their respective stories through bravery and resilience. She helps to free them from past ineffective decisions that have been formed against their identity, confidence, and belief system. Amid a global pandemic, the recent election, systemic racism, and social injustices, Crystal found that it could not have come at a better time to publish her first anthology. Interestingly, this has since become an Amazon Best-Seller.

Crystal shares that No More Residue is designed to connect co-authors back to their true identity in Christ Jesus. She says, “It helps them to get clear of the clutter that once clouded their vision from seeing the beauty God placed in them. No More Residue is designed to build up the author’s belief system and confidence, which aids in healing and removing any residue from their past.” She continues, “This book converts their pain into profits through writing, speaking, coaching, and online course creation, and helps to get their message and mission out into the marketplace.”

One of the topics covered in the book by one of the co-authors is the often taboo topic of abortion. In her story, she connects with women who may have feared abandonment, rejection, and disownment from family and friends because of their decision to have an abortion. She shares her personal account of how her decision to abort her unborn child crippled her mentally, spiritually, emotionally, and physically for over 20+ years. “Her story reveals how No More Residue freed her from suffering in silence, knowing she is forgiven, cleansed, and free.”

No More Residue – Vol.1 is for the woman pursuing her God-given assignment while working her 9-5. “She is who we call the parallelprenuer,” she says. “I want her to know that she’s unstoppable and encourage her to give herself a chance to see all the greatness God put inside of her. Most importantly, she should know that she is not alone in her journey because there are seventeen bold, brave, and unapologetic women who will walk alongside her as she launches her business.”

Crystal states that you can be, have, and do all the things God has shown you. “Begin to be intentional about your days. Journal so you can identify your strengths and confidence snatchers. Meditate. Speak God’s word over yourself day and night. Set affirmations in your bathroom so you can speak them first thing every morning.”

Once Lost BUT FOUND

COACH NAKIRA T. DARDEN ON HER BOOK THAT SHARES HER JOURNEY TO HEALING, GROWTH AND TRANSFORMATION

68 | TODAY’S PURPOSE WOMAN 2023

“As I began to see elevation in my life, I noticed so many others around me declining in theirs.” Coach Nakira Darden says about the inspiration for her latest book, Once Lost, But Found.

The realization convinced her to share her transformation with those struggling to find themselves. Her journey was challenging, but Nakira stayed consistent and motivated. Through her book, she wants people to know it will be difficult, but persistence pays off. “I decided to share some of my journey, wisdom, and the things that supported me in seeing myself.”

The book is about Nakira’s experiences that challenged her throughout her life and pushed her in the direction that self-awareness became a possibility. She learned to see and know herself using strategies that kept her encouraged. “I also wanted to include strategies that challenged me to help others, so they can use them to support themselves and get to know the truth about themselves and live a better life.”

As a licensed professional counselor, behavioral specialist, educator, mentor and spiritual life coach, Nakira has served countless women, children, and families for over 20 years. Once Lost, But Found is her latest attempt to help people who feel lost in their lives. She hopes they become more self-aware after reading her book.

“I am very passionate about supporting others to see and live their true potential.” Building a healthy relationship with Spirit helped her stay focused on becoming the happiest version of herself. She continues to learn and grow by experiencing things that bring her joy. As she pursues her zealous endeavor, she remains mindful of her health, children, and business and strives to improve each area of her life.

Her book highlights the strategies that strengthened and tested her determination to become better over the years. She also shares scenarios and interventions that sparked her into action and encouraged her to put herself first. To address this topic, she discusses relationships in her book. “One thing about relationships that individuals sometimes forget is that it’s a twoway street.” She emphasizes that communication nurtures relationships and strengthens connections on all levels. When one partner invests more than the other, the relationship suffers.

She adds, “You have to treat others as you want to be treated.” She adds that relationships do not get nurtured enough because the shadows of past relationships haunt people. Forcing someone to be present in a relationship only leads to further misery.

A better alternative would be to let things flow organically and give partners space to create boundaries for themselves and express their true feelings to their significant other when they are ready.

“By doing this, you are supporting yourself and staying aligned with your wants. These rules, of course, have to be created and embedded within you.” Once Lost, But Found is for women seeking a new direction. She wants them to know that determination and perseverance are key factors in manifesting whatever they desire. They can learn from the book about seeing themselves and creating a life they truly want. Knowing and understanding the concept will be overwhelming, but they can do it if they stay consistent. Nakira believes that as soon as women let go of the doubts and fears holding them back, they can believe in themselves.
