Karen Nash AND SCRUFFY 2 FLUFFY WAS BORN … Karen is in her late 40s and most of her career was spent in an office environment. She was in a job she was not happy with and her whole family was suffering of this situation. She had a long discussion with her husband about her unhapiness and he suggested that she could train to be a dog groomer. Karen worked part time à a local groomer at the beginning of 2011 and he knew how much she enjoyed it. But at that time, unfortunately, the groomer decided to move out of town and work only 2 days per week, so there would only be enough work for one. Karen had to find another office job. But fast forward in 2014, Karen left her job on a Friday and, on the Sunday, she was driving North to begin her first week of dog groomer training. She came back home for three weeks and then took another week. She loved it and wanted more. Only a week after, she had purchased a 10 foot caravan, fully fitted and only one dryer away from hapiness! And that is how everything started !

Karen has been working for herself for a few months now and her business is slowly starting to pick up. The whole family is now happier.

Given the choice of working in an office or grooming - grooming wins hands down. - Karen Nash

The « Zoom on » section is here to introduce the newcomers of the profession. If you have just started your grooming business, do not hesitate to send your story and pictures to info@toilettagemagazine.com and you might be the next groomer featured in this page! 3

CANINE EAR ISSUES … HOW TO IDENTIFY THEM? CANINE EAR ANATOMY The shape of the canine ear makes it very sensitive to bacteria, parasites and mites. Indeed, the canal of a dog’s ear is very different from ours, anatomically speaking. Unlike human ears, dogs’ ears consist of two internal parts positioned at an angle of 90° and of one external part. Most breed have an ear canal longer that humans and, most of the time, the pinna falls over the canal. This means that air cannot flow freely. It makes the canal warm, moist and more susceptible to infections.

Health

Dogs with particularly long ears, such as basset or spaniels are even more exposed.

HOW TO IDENTITY THE EAR ISSUES? There are very typical signs that can help you to identify an ear health issue.          

The ear canal emits a very unpleasant smell Ear discharge The dog is constantly bending his head on the side It seems to hurt when you touch him The skin is red and painful Swelling Scabs Loss of hair around the ear Ear wax is black or brown Ear skin is thicker

If you encounter any of this symptoms during your grooming, it is important that you inform your clients and suggest him to take his dog to the vet as soon as possible.

MAIN CAUSES OF CANIN E EAR PROBLEMS 

  

8

Too much hair in the ear canal. Excessive hair in the ear that occur in some breeds may cause irritation and problems with circulation of air in the duct, making the dog more susceptible to infections and parasites. Remove the hair and clean the ear. Foreign bodies. Elements, such as seeds can sometimes fit within the ear canal, causing pain and / or inflammation. These elements should be removed as soon as possible by a veterinarian. Ear mites. It is distinguished by the dark dirt or tasks that look like coffee grounds inside the ear. These are parasites which develop in contact with other infected animals. Allergic reactions. For dogs, most of ear problems are related to skin problems and allergies. Dogs that are prone to itching are often also prone to ear problems. They may also suffer from allergic reactions to parasites such as mites and scabies. If this is the case, it is important to clean the dog's ears with non-aggressive products specifically designed for their ears. Yeasts. Microorganisms that can cause infestations by yeasts. They grow in hot humid and dark environments, e.g., canine ear canal. If your client shows symptoms of infestations by yeasts (which quickly identifies with the odor coming from the ears), a veterinarian will prescribe the appropriate treatment.

Some breeds are extremely intelligent. It is the case, for example, for the Border collie, a sheep dog. A study has proven that Rico was able to learn a list of more than 200 words and even to associate ideas. If he was presented 7 different objects including one he did not know, he was able to deduct and associate the unknown words to the unknown object. Since this study was published, another dog named Chaser, also a Border collie, was able to prove he knew more than a thousand words.

Meet groomers Worldwide!!! By Nathalie Ariey-Jouglard

Welcome in this new section in which you will be able to meet groomers from all over the world. We all have a special story to tell and this month, let’s meet Sue Wright from Australia.

Sue lives and works in Queensland, Australia, although she was born in the UK.

She’s a Diploma certified groomer & is passionate about her art. Until 2012 she owned a grooming salon & dog boutique on the Coast in Queensland but after her children left home to go to University her Husband & her decided to

build a house in the country, she thought this was perfect as it gave her the opportunity to work from home & develop her grooming skills, allowing her to spend more time with each dog without the distractions that come with owning a larger salon, so her wonderful husband made her a purpose built salon which has been opened for nearly a year now and is already doing very well.

10

Sue also enjoys grooming competitions and in May, this year, she won first place & best in group in Salon freestyle. She entered with her own Maltese x Shih Tzu named “Alfie” and groomed him in a Schnauzer trim.

Clara, 9 years old and already a fan of grooming Grooming is a vocation and it often starts early! This is the case for Clara, 9, already passionated by this art and looking forw ard to her first real groomer dog !! Clara started at 7 years old but, from a very young

age, she’s been waiting for the day she could wash and handle her first dog. Indeed, this little prodigy is also passionate about handling! If, for the moment, she uses clippers only on body and legs, she can’t wait to be old enough for her first full clipping, and, more than this, to be able to handle the scissors that she can already hold like a true groomer. For the moment she trains on paper silhouettes and is waiting for her 10th birthday, for which her parents promised her first dog. This little girl would love a miniature Schnauzer. Now, she helps her mum in her salon, washing and drying the dogs for the customers who gives her permission, but we can surely expect to meet her, in the comings years, on the podiums of dog shows and grooming competitions!

Christmas Recipe Here is a simple recipe for dog biscuits that will delight your clients, your loved ones and friends who want to spoil their dog during the holidays.

Beef and bacon flavor dog biscuits These biscuits are tasty and easy to prepare, they contain no sugar and you can easily replace the beef stock with chicken or even vegetable if you prefer. You can try to find a bone-shaped mold but any shape will do.

Ingredients 280g of whole wheat flour 55g of milk powder 2 teaspoon of beef stock (or chicken or vegetable as you wish) 120ml of bacon grease 1 egg 120ml of ice water

Instructions Preheat oven to 175 ° C. Mix flour, milk and stock Stir in the bacon fat and eggs, then add the ice water gradually until dough is moist enough to make a ball. It is better to use a wooden spoon and not a whisk. Roll the dough on a floured surface until it is about 1 cm thick, then cut to the desired shape. Bake on an ungreased cookie tray until firm for about 25 minutes. Make sure that the cookies are completely cooled before storing them or give them to your dog. Store in an airtight container to preserve freshness. You do not have the time, desire or ability to cook for yourself? Toilettage Magazine has found the perfect solution for you!

Little Good Ideas Why not organizing your own contest for the holidays. Give away some prizes and invite your customers to participate in your great contest. Ideas are endless. Why not a photo contest, a raffle, a tombola, etc. And for the gifts, ideas are legions as well, such as dog biscuit box, chocolates for the two legged customers, discounts on your services or accessories, vouchers, etc. CAUTION: Avoid prizes in money as it is prohibited by law in many countries. If you do so, make sure the law is on your side. 

Get your Grinch On! By Dawn Omboy

One of my favorite stories of all is How the Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr. Seuss. This is also one of my favorite creative holiday designs. I began by picking a picture off the internet of the Grinch. (fig1)

Figure 1

The dog I chose to use is a Shih Tzu with a close clipped jacket. The short coat is better for this type of design because when the dog with a longer coat moves the pattern will become distorted. I freehanded this design onto the back of the dog with the black dye Kiss Express#98 and a small paintbrush. If you are not comfortable with freehand print off the picture you want to use and make it into a stencil by cutting it out with an exacto knife. Place the stencil on the dog and use a light layer of PetPaint or airbrush to set the lines quickly. With this part done you can then proceed to dying the outline with the black dyes. (Fig2) Next comes time to fill in the colors of our Grinch again with a small firm paintbrush, the paintbrush makes it easy to put the dyes within the lines. I started with the eyes and then the hat (fig 3)

Figure 2

19

It is exciting to watch the progress of the Grinch come to life! (Fig 4, 5, 6).

Figure 3

Figure 4

Figure 5

Figure 6

20

The red dye I used for this is also Kiss Express Truly Red, it is a very long lasting dye and usually must grow out of the coat and eventually be cut away. The perfect green I found for my Grinch is a product called Avatar, it is just the right shade of Grinchy Green! Once the colors are all on I set a timer Small airbrush machine and let them stay on the coat for a minimum time of 30 minutes. These dyes are actually stains that color the hair without damaging the hair. They are also easy to rinse because they usually rinse clean with cool water and do not bleed into other parts of the coat while being rinsed. (Fig8)

Figure 8

With the dog all rinsed and back on the table we can see the black will still need to be touched up with inks from an airbrush to really make them pop.

I use a small airbrush machine and black ink. You can see in the picture how outlining your design makes it stand out. VoilĂ ! We have a holiday design that will bring happiness to all who sees this cute little dog.

Merry Christmas to all! Dawn Omboy, Queen of Color www.queenofcolor.com

Christmas photo shoots ... Always a success !!!

ŠEmfoto - Belgium

To boost your business during the holidays, why not organize a photo shoot in your grooming salon. Invite all your customers to come AND pose on a special little Christmas decor! This will energize the life of your salon, you’ll fill your appointment book, because everyone will want to be good looking for the picture and, in the same time, you will build customer loyalty. If some take their own pictures, do not hesitate to ASK FOR the services of a professional. The latter, most of the time, do not ask for payment and simply sell the pictures taken to your customers to compensate. Your clients keep a wonderful souvenir of their little ones and if your clients are happy, then you will be.

Breed File: The Shih Tzu

BY DANIÈLE SNIJERS – TRANSLATED BY NATHALIE ARIEY-JOUGLARD

36

SPECIAL FILE : THE SHIH TZU

Introduction of the breed The Shih Tzu comes from Tibet and belongs to group 9, meaning that he is a companion and toy dog.

A little bit of history? Despite many very distinctive differences, there is still a tendency to confuse Apso and Shih Tzu. This breed comes from Tibet but developed in imperial China. When it became a republic in 1912, some representatives of the breed found their way to Europe. Nevertheless, the first registration in Great Britain, as an import, was only in 1931. The breed was recognized apart from other eastern breeds, in 1934 and The Kennel Club granted it with a separate book of origins in 1940 with the authorization to compete for the Challenge Certificates in 1949. The head of the Shih Tzu looks like a very seducing chrysanthemum which is due to the hair growing straight on the muzzle.

Official standard of the Shih Tzu (source: AKC) General Appearance: The Shih Tzu is a sturdy, lively, alert toy dog with long flowing double coat. Befitting his noble Chinese ancestry as a highly valued, prized companion and palace pet, the Shih Tzu is proud of bearing, has a distinctively arrogant carriage with head well up and tail curved over the back. Although

37

there has always been considerable size variation, the Shih Tzu must be compact, solid, carrying good weight and substance. Even though a toy dog, the Shih Tzu must be subject to the same requirements of soundness and structure prescribed for all breeds, and any deviation from the ideal described in the standard should be penalized to the extent of the deviation. Structural faults common to all breeds are as undesirable in the Shih Tzu as in any other breed, regardless of whether or not such faults are specifically mentioned in the standard. Size, Proportion, Substance: Size - Ideally, height at withers is 9 to 10½ inches; but, not less than 8 inches nor more than 11 inches. Ideally, weight of mature dogs, 9 to 16 pounds. Proportion - Length between withers and root of tail is slightly longer than height at withers. The Shih Tzu must never be so high stationed as to appear leggy, nor so low stationed as to appear dumpy or squatty. Substance - Regardless of size, the Shih Tzu is always compact, solid and carries good weight and substance. Head: Head - Round, broad, wide between eyes, its size in balance with the overall size of dog being neither too large nor too small. Fault: Narrow head, close-set eyes. Expression - Warm, sweet, wide-eyed, friendly and trusting. An overall well-balanced and pleasant expression supersedes the importance of individual parts. Care should be taken to look and examine well beyond the hair to determine if what is seen is the actual head and expression rather than an image created by grooming technique. Eyes - Large, round, not prominent, placed well apart, looking straight ahead. Very dark. Lighter on liver pigmented dogs and blue pigmented dogs. Fault: Small, close-set or light eyes; excessive eye white. Ears - Large, set slightly below crown of skull; heavily coated. Skull - Domed. Stop - There is a definite stop. Muzzle - Square, short, unwrinkled, with good cushioning, set no lower than bottom eye rim; never downturned. Ideally, no longer than 1 inch from tip of nose to stop, although length may vary slightly in relation to overall size of dog. Front of muzzle should be flat; lower lip and chin not protruding and definitely never receding. Fault: Snippiness, lack of definite stop. Nose - Nostrils are broad, wide, and open. Pigmentation - Nose, lips, eye rims are black on all colors, except liver on liver pigmented dogs and blue on blue pigmented dogs. Fault: Pink on nose, lips, or eye rims. Bite - Undershot. Color and Markings: All are permissible and to be considered equally. Gait: The Shih Tzu moves straight and must be shown at its own natural speed, neither raced nor strung-up, to evaluate its smooth, flowing, effortless movement with good front reach and equally strong rear drive, level topline, naturally high head carriage, and tail carried in gentle curve over back. Temperament: As the sole purpose of the Shih Tzu is that of a companion and house pet, it is essential that its temperament be outgoing, happy, affectionate, friendly and trusting towards all.

Grooming a Shih Tzu We could think that the Shih Tzu has to be groomed with long shiny straight hair, mandarin moustache and the famous top knot. But there is many ways to combine the advantages of using your clippers with the beauty of the long hair. The Shih Tzu is what we could call a « Therapy Dog » so his grooming has to match with your temperament. The different grooming techniques allow you to do many things according to the texture of the hair, his morphology and his everyday life. Imagination is your only limit with this breed. Half-long hair style is quite popular at the moment and, of course, you can try the Asian style on this breed which is quite “made for it”. Be careful, if ears are groomed too long it will « lengthen » the face and will weigh down the expression except with a very well-constructed dog.

The sensitive dog chronicle

By Nathalie Ariey-Jouglard Just fell on a very interesting and not so surprising study from Dr Gregory Berns, professor at the Emory University in Atlanta. According to his conclusions, our dogs are gifted with the same sensitivity than our children. Thanks to a series of MRI conducted on several dogs while exposing them to situations implying to lead to an emotional response, Dr Berns would have found that the readings where the same than ours, leading him to the conclusion that dogs were true people. Personally, I never needed a RMI to see and understand than my dog was able to love, suffer, be sad, feel happy or given up. Most of us, animal lovers, already knew it. But this study give us one more argument in favor of animal welfare. But how and to what extent? Many did not take long to reply that dogs should not be confused with human and that this results did not exactly mean that a dog could have feelings such as love, for example. However, I perfectly remember that, as a child, I was able to love, to be sad, to be happy, etc. So, if a RMI reading says that a dog’s brain reacts the same way that a child’s brain, does not that mean that he feels exactly the same than a child?

This puts a lot of things into perspective, abandon first, but also many activities such as breeding. How much are they suffering when some humans keep them locked in cages all their lives, mate them intensively and separate them from their children as quickly as possible so they can start all over again and again? This only thought, which was already untenable to me and awoke within me the deepest sadness, is even more horrible in light of this study. Indeed, how a human worthy of being could face this reality and go on with these activities?

What about anthropomorphism? We all know this poor argument … this is « just » a dog! Don’t consider “it” as it had the same feeling than you do… how many of us already heard these words like a justification of many drifts towards animal welfare! Trying to make us feel like an idiot because we act with our dogs like they could have human feelings. Who is the idiot now? Science now gives us the proof that anthropomorphism is an invention of those who to find a way to salve their consciences for considering dogs “just like dogs”. I would be tempted to laugh out loud at their face if I did not feel like crying for all these dogs who are still mistreated “just like dogs” instead of being considered like sensitive people, with their own feelings, just as intense as our children’s. It is likely that many new studies will follow this one and will open many more debated about animal status in our society. Better late than never I guess …
