“ Alexandra, 33, from northern France (59 Cambrai) opened her grooming salon in January 2015 in the heart of the industrial area of Castres in the Tarn region. Surrounded by dogs since childhood at his family home, she experienced early desire to become a "Dog hairdresser" and work with animals. She decided to embrace this profession and began her training to become a groomer. The dog groomer of her city kindly agreed to let her have a try which was for her a revelation and definitively confirmed her vocation. Her love of animals also pushed her to breed two breeds she appreciates the most, the long haired Collie and the long haired Chihuahua. The poodle – Part 2
Photo credit ©EM foto Welcome to the second episode of our Poodle saga. There is so much to discover about this breed, especially regarding grooming, but not only, that’s why we’ve decided to create multiple folders. They will not necessarily be published one after the other because we have to leave some room for other breeds just as beautiful and interesting. On the menu this time, a little history, anecdotes, photos and ... grooming. Thank you to EM Foto for providing great pictures for our magazine. More information on emfoto.be

Poodles in history
Throughout the history we find emblematic poodles who accompanied the soldiers on the battlefield or the great artists in their everyday life.
Poodle stories Poodles have marked many artists throughout history when they have shared or simply crossed their lives. We find one of these funny episodes in the life of Charles Dickens. While there was a small crossbred, named Gipsy, who was not allowed to go into the house, they brought to him one day a poodle able to make a few tricks. Seeing this dog inside, Mrs Bouncer, a Pomeranian belonging to his daughter Mamie and living in the house, was indignant, she rose and escorted Gipsy inside and brought her outside only once the Poodle was taken outside. For the duration of the "show", she turned her back and did not look at it, even once. This reaction amused Charles Dickens very much.
Moffino It is found in many examples during the Napoleonic Wars. Thus, the history of Moffino is both touching and exciting. According to one version of history and that seems most likely, Moffino was separated from his master in the confusion of the battle of Berezina. The poodle, after following the track of the army over thousands of kilometers, found his master in Milan after a year of separation. While he was injured and recuperating, he was surprised to open his door one morning and find his dog. After the reunion, the man and the poodle still remained many years together. You can find this story and others in the book by Philippe de Wailly, Poodles (Paris: Solar, 1988), new edition; published for the first time in 1972; p. 10. The French Moustache Gives a very special style to the poodle, a bit of « aristocracy touch ». Like it or not, you can’t deny it’s quite funny. Leave the hair on the muzzle starting from the outside corner of the nose. Neaten the top of the muzzle down to the nose and clip under the jawline. Et Voilà! Your French aristocratic poodle appears. Match it with different top knot and ear styles according to your imagination or your customers’ requests. Illustration from the book "The All Breed Dog Grooming Guide" by Sam Kohl. How to sell a new style A few tips to convince your customers to try some new grooms! Renewing yourself constantly, proposing new ideas to your customers, this is one of the keys that make your business last and grow. But instilling innovation in the customer's mind is often impossible. How to make my client accept the new style I love, when he just loves short clippings or classic grooms? How to think outside the box? The customer is not difficult to convince no matter if he is young or old, more rural or more urban, if you know how to sell it, your client will adopt it, trust yourself and trust your intuitions.
Train Before you can sell a new style, you have to master it, you need to train and obtain satisfactory results for you and your customers. You cannot sell a style if the cut is ruined the very first time you propose it. If you do not have your own dog to train, you will have to do so on your customers’ dogs. There are some styles that can then be "erased". Groom the dog according to the new style you like, if the cut is successful, take a picture of the dog and finish the groom as his master is accustomed to. If the result was really successful, show him the photo and if satisfied, offer to try it next time. If it was unsuccessful, this did not interfere with the end result and you had another opportunity to practice, which brings you one step closer to mastering your new style.
Toilettage Magazine English Version – October 2015 – Page 13
Do not ask for a service, propose one There might be some styles that will not allow you to get back to the groom your customer wishes, for these you’ll have to ask for permission. But here is a simple rule you MUST follow which is not to introduce this as a favor you are asking from your customer. Do not present it as “I’m studying some new style” or “I’m just coming back from a workshop”, “can I try it on your dog?” That would be your first mistake. You are a groomer, you follow the styles and you inform your customers about the new tendencies. It is you who offer him an additional service it is not him who makes you a favor. Maybe he will say yes, perhaps he will say no, but at least each time so you get a yes, you get to free your creativity.
Photos, photos and more photos Take pictures of all your successful grooms. Why? Glad you ask! Because a picture is the best mean to sell your new style. When you will have several good pics, frame them and hang them up. Create your own “Wall of Fame” to impress every old and new customer that step in your shop. Do not hesitate to renew it whenever you feel it is necessary.
Your own four legged shop assistant If you are lucky enough to have your own dog suitable for this new style you love, do not hesitate to groom him and let him show off around the shop. What more efficient than seeing your lovely companion to walk around the salon while displaying this new fashionable style that makes him so cute?
Efficient commercials Once you’ve initiated your new fashion, you will find new inspiration and new customers. People who have dogs meet other people who have dogs in parks, during walks. These customers you’ve been able to convince will sell your style outside the shop, displaying your talent throughout the streets.
Sell yourself Finally, remember that advertising is important when you are promoting your salon, don’t forget to specify that you are proposing new trends, and if you're the only salon around to do it, this is a point that it is also necessary to highlight. Your company is a modern, futureoriented and offers its customers booming styles. It is an essential element on which you need to communicate. If you are daring, your customers will be. It is of you to have the right snip, good arguments and good promotional tools.

WildWash has been developed to satisfy a genuine need in the market for truly natural shampoos and cosmetics for pets. As professionals we have spent years slowly and patiently developing a natural line of pet shampoos and cosmetics that we believe to be the best in the World. They have embraced our project with a passion. Behavioral Based Grooming for dogs| TCAP “One day, we dreamed that animals were treated humanely by all professionals in animal-related domains, that their physical, psychological, and emotional limitations were respected, that everyone agreed that they need not experience pain as a necessary evil and that they were given the option to choose their own destiny. One day, our dream finally began to materialize.”
TCAP Dogs | Behavioral Based Grooming for Dogs The TCAP approach means a lot more than just grooming with treats. The TCAP grooming model was carefully developed based on the scientific laws of learning, a thorough understanding of the subtleties of canine body language, a complete reorganization of the work environment, as well as applied behavior analysis (ABA). We manage to lower animals' stress level considerably by respecting each of their individual physical and psychological limitations and by avoiding surpassing their tolerance threshold. We aim to build a trusting relationship with each animal with the purpose of creating a collaborative experience, like a sense of communion between animal and human. Desired behaviors are reinforced, and we teach alternative behaviors to replace the unwanted ones. TCAP was created out of more than 20 years' experience in the fields of grooming and animal behavior, many specialized courses and hands-on workshops (see our expertise here: http://www.artaupoil.com/expertise.asp), the spiritual journey of everyday life, contemplation leading to expanded consciousness, universal laws that govern the entire universe, cleaner living, a great friendship with our friends, students, clients, dogs, cats, pigs, alpacas,
chickens, ducks, monkey, ravens, fish, parrots, plants, trees, and most of all, with other humans. TCAP was birthed as a result of a relationship based on love, friendship, and a life partnership. Everything has stemmed from an association between two beings who share a passion and who are moving in the same direction, wishing for the welfare of all living creature. WHY CHOOSE TCAP?

Groomer, a job for the future? More and more people, young or not, contact me because they want to become a groomer as an initial career path or because they want to reconvert. The most asked question is “Would I be able to make a living out of it?” The answer is yes! You can make a living out of being a groomer but under certain conditions.
T HE BEST GROOMER IN THE WORLD IS NOTHING WITHOUT A GOOD WORKING TOOL
When I say « good working tool », I mean a nice well maintained and well situated salon because you can have gold in your fingers with your shears, if you choose a bad location for your salon, for example, you won’t enough customer to make a living out of it. That is this last notion you have to keep in mind. Grooming is a passion for a lot of us, but if you wish to make a living out of it you have to treat your salon as a business and not as an art gallery. Before your great opening, make sure you have all the necessary knowledge to run your company. Taxes, salaries, regulations of all kind. Now all the information is easily found on the web so you can learn by yourself and soon become an expert. My advice: there is a lot of groomers ready to help you on the social Medias such as Facebook. Do not hesitate to be part of the right groups and to ask them. They will also help you to avoid the mistakes they did. Grooming is a job of the future as it evolves constantly. Is changes all the time and adapt to the demand and to the fashions coming from East and West. To have a healthy business, you have to follow the trends and meet customer demand that is still asking for novelties. Keep your eyes and ears opened. Walk out of your territory bubble, meet other groomers from your country and from abroad. Keep training to learn new trends and to ameliorate your skills. So do not hesitate to embrace that profession, if you have the passion you’ll find the energy and the means, but do things properly, study the market, train properly and live your passion

The Munchkin Recent cat breed originated in the United States, this breed is characterized by very short front legs. Natural genetic mutation that makes this breed basset cats. In 1983, in Louisiana, a breeder finds a black cat whose front legs are very short.
She calls her Blackberry and the cat has a first litter in which she gets kittens with short front legs. This genetic anomaly was already appeared during the 20th century and some cats with this characteristic were showed in different countries around the world. It is only in 1991, in New York, during a cat show in the Madison Square Garden, that the Munchkin is introduces for the first time under this name. Its name originates from a small tribe that the heroin of the book “Wizard of Oz” meets during her adventures.
IT IS RECOGNIZED BY THE INTERNATIONAL CAT ASSOCIATION IN 1995 WHICH CREATES A REAL CONTROVERSY FOUNDED ON THE FACT THAT THERE COULD BE POTENTIAL HEALTH AND MOBILITY ISSUES. Toilettage Magazine English Version – October 2015 – Page 21
It is a happy and playful cat, gentle who loves humans. It is very expressive and intelligent. It is an easy cat to handle. These short legs do not seem to interfere with his ability to run or its agility. Many crossings have already created other breeds of cats with short legs from Munchkin. A cross between a Munchkin and LaPerm has created the Skookum. The LaPerm is a curly hair breed that appeared spontaneously in the 80s in Oregon. Linda and Richard Koehl’s cat gave birth to a curly haired kitten named Curly and all LaPerms are its descendants. Its name is derived from the French "Permanent" in reference to the haircut. The cross between the Munchkin and LaPerm has produced a small cat with short legs and curly hair. "Laperm LH red tabby" by Bebopscrx - Own work.
By crossing the Munchkin and the Sphinx, breeders have created two breeds, the Minskin and the Bambino
Skookum
Minskin
The Bambino has short legs, he inherited from the Munchkin, and huge upright ears. It has the nakedness of the Sphynx, with white or pink skin. Without fur to absorb the natural oils of the cat, the Bambino needs regular bathing with water and mild soap. The hariless skin of the Bambino means that it is vulnerable to cold, strong sunlight and skin injuries.
Bambino
Page 22 – Toilettage Magazine English Version – October 2015
By crossing a Munchkin with a Selkirk Rex, an extremely curly breed, breeders got the Lambkin.
Lambkin
Selkirk Rex
The Napoleon, also called Minuet, was created by a cross between the Munchkin and a Persian cat.
Toilettage Magazine English Version – October 2015 – Page 23
Lastly, by crossing a Munchkin with Bengal, breeders have obtained the Genetta
All this breeds are recognized by the INTERNATIONAL CAT ASSOCIATION. The Munchkin come in shorthair and semi-long. Among subjects with short hair, fur lays on the body without much undercoat. In mid-long subjects, the hair is silky and also with little undercoat. A slight collar may be accepted and the pants should be well supplied. All colors and patterns are accepted. The smallness of its legs makes the Munchkin kitten even cuter than cute.
