Festival de poesía, de Mediterraneo a Mediterraneo Voix Vives, from Mediterranean to Mediterranean
del 31 de agosto al 2 de septiembre volveremos a celebrar un año más, y ya van seis, el Festival Internacional de Poesía Voix Vives, de Mediterráneo en Mediterráneo, que reúne en las calles, plazas y museos del casco histórico de toledo a los principales poetas de un lado y otro del Mediterráneo.
From 31 August to 2 September, we will celebrate the sixth year of the Voix Vives International Festival of Poetry from the Mediterranean to the Mediterranean, which bring together the major poets from all sides of the Mediterranean to the streets, squares and museums of Toledo’s historic centre.
Voces poéticas que demuestran lo cerca que están las culturas que pueblan nuestro mar, lo poco que nos separa pese a los momentos convulsos que la historia nos ha hecho protagonizar. conocer es comprender y escuchar las hasta nueve lenguas que durante tres días resonarán entre las piedras y sus diferentes poéticas y tradiciones nos hace estar más cerca de la otredad.
Poetic Voices that show how close the cultures that populate our sea are, and how so little separates us despite the turbulent moments of our shared history. To know is to understand and listen to the nine languages that for three days will resonate between the stones, and the varied poetry and traditions that bring us closer to otherness.
cada día y a cada hora – durante tres días - desde las 10h hasta las 2 de la madrugada se suceden unas cincuenta propuestas poéticas entre lecturas, debates, performances, sesiones de poesía escénica, presentaciones de libros, talleres, actuaciones de calle, música, cuentacuentos, poesía urbana, exposiciones, etc,… llenando las calles de toledo de versos.
Every day and every hour – for three days – from 10a.m. to 2a.m. there are about 50 poetry events, between readings, debates, performances, staged poetry sessions, book presentations, workshops, street performances, music, storytelling, urban poetry, exhibitions, etc. ... filling the streets of Toledo with verses.

The jazz festival in the city of Toledo has achieved over the years enshrined as one of the most competent and imaginative in offering the Spanish and European circuit. Various local, mostly in the old quarter, offering shelter to the repertoire of concerts presented by each new Edition of the festival, with a roster of soloists and groups that support all types of styles, from classic dark bars New Orleans, to European art and rhythmic, to the best jazz formations, white or Latino. Not to mention training for marching band or the mixing or the vanguard, this festival has become a driving force and versatility in one of the most interesting competition with some of the size of those held in New Orleans, Portugal, Argentina or Italy. 12 /

el parque arqueológico, es uno de los más importantes conjuntos monumentales de la Hispania romana. la notable extensión del enclave, la variedad de sus testimonios arquitectónicos, así como la expresividad y belleza de los mosaicos de la villa romana, otorgan a este yacimiento un lugar muy destacado en la arqueología española. Fortuitamente, en el 1983, se descubrió el primer mosaico. a lo largo de los años se han puesto al descubierto diversos edificios que abarcan unas 18 hectáreas, entre los que sobresalen la cas de Materno y su complejo productivo –torcularium-, un mausoleo y un edificio palacial. The Parque Arqueológico (Archaeological Park) is one of the most important collections of monuments from Roman Spain. Thanks to the significant size of the settlement, the varied nature of its architectural remains and the expressiveness and beauty of the mosaics in the Roman villa, this site occupies a very prominent place in Spanish archaeology. In 1983 the first mosaic was discovered by accident and over the intervening years various building have been brought to light covering an area of around 18 hectares. Some of the more notable among these include the Casa de Materno (Maternal House) and its agricultural production room (or torcularium), a mausoleum and palatial building.

el consorcio de toledo puso en marcha en junio de 2004 sus rutas “patrimonio desconocido”. se trata de unas rutas que incluyen visitas gratuitas y guiadas a diversos monumentos, yacimientos arqueológicos y otros lugares de singular interés, que han sido recuperados y puestos en valor por el consorcio de la ciudad de toledo y que llevaban años, en algunos casos siglos, sin poder ser visitados. las visitas pueden realizarse individualmente o en grupo. en este último caso es recomendable programar la visita previamente para evitar coincidencias de varios grupos en un mismo día y hora. The Consortium of the City of Toledo started its “Unexplored Patrimony” routes in June 2004. These routes include free-guided visits to various monuments, archaeological sites and other places of interest that were inaccessible to the public for many years – in some cases centuries – and have recently been recovered and made available by the Consortium. Individual and group visits are available. If visiting with a group, reservations are strongly recommended in order to guarantee space. Visits can be arranged at the Consortium’s Cultural Resource Management Centre, found at the Roman Baths of Plaza de Amador de los Ríos.

Thermae, es el último hallazgo del consorcio de toledo, son restos arqueológicos romanos en la galería subterránea de la plaza de amador de los ríos.
Thermae, the latest discovery of the Consortium of Toledo, are Roman archaeological remains in the underground gallery of the Plaza de Amador de los Ríos.
es una de las termas más importantes de la Hispania romana. unas termas públicas de mediados del s ii d.c que suponen tan sólo una pequeña parte de un gran conjunto termal que se integraba en un enorme “centro comercial de la época” de como mínimo 2.300 metros cuadrados. el edificio más grande de que se tiene constancia en el casco histórico. entre los hallazgos más importantes está el torso romano de mármol que pertenece a un sátiro danzante. sólo existe otro ejemplar en el mundo, concretamente en grecia. la estatua se encuentra en el Museo de santa cruz, aquí podremos ver una reproducción.
It is one of the most important hot springs of Roman Hispania. A few public hot springs from the middle of the 2nd century AD represent only a small part of a large spa complex that was integrated into a huge "commercial centre of the time" of at least 2,300 square meters. It is the largest known building in the historic centre. Among the most significant finds is the Roman marble torso of a dancing satyr. There is only one other example in the world, specifically in Greece. The statue is in the Santa Cruz Museum. Here, we can see a replica.

[ Catedral ] este grandioso monumento, quizá el edificio más representativo de la ciudad, fue construido entre 1226 y 1492. aunque la parte fundamental de la catedral es de estilo gótico, sin embargo diversos estilos de arte están representados en su decoración, participando de formas tan diversas como el renacentista del coro. la sacristía constituye un auténtico museo en sí misma, albergando obras de tan célebres artistas como el greco, rubens, zurbarán, lucas jordán, Vand dick, tristán, goya… aunque bien podría decirse que toda la catedral es un verdadero museo digno de admiración. también se puede visitar la sala capitular y el tesoro. This magnificent building is probably the construction that best exemplifies the charm and features of the city and was built during the years 1226 and 1492. The main construction pattern of the cathedral is Gothic but many different styles of art are represented in its decoration, with such styles as the Renaissance in the choir stall. The sacristy is a true museum itself, with works from very famous artists, such as El Greco, Rubens, Zurbarán, Lucas Jordán, Vand Dick, Tristán and Goya, among others. The “Alcázar” is one of the most symbolic sites of Toledo and a privileged witness of some of the most important events in the history of Spain. It achieved its greatest splendor during the reign of Carlos I, when the best and most renown architects devoted their talent to this historic building. The new headquarters of the Museum of the Army count into seven main rooms with historic collections (up to the 20th century) and thirteen thematic rooms with diverse collections.

[ Iglesia de santo tomé ] [ el entierro del señor orgaz ]
[ museo de santa Cruz ] este Hospital, de estilo plateresco, fue mandado construir a principios del siglo XVi por el cardenal pedro gonzález de Mendoza para reunir todos los hospitales de toledo en un mismo emplazamiento. Hoy en día alberga el museo del mismo nombre, donde se pueden apreciar diversos lienzos de el greco, entre los cuales cabe resaltar “la asunción de la Virgen”, “inmaculada concepción”, “la Veronica”, así como obras de otros autores e interesantes objetos de arte y arqueológicos. The Hospital, with a clear plateresque style, was built at the beginning of the 16th century by cardinal Pedro González de Mendoza as a single gathering point for all hospitals of Toledo. It currently hosts the Museum of Santa Cruz, where different canvases painted by El Greco are exhibited, among which we can highlight “La Asunción de la Virgen”, “Inmaculada Concepción”, “La Veronica”, as well as other works from different artists and interesting archeological objects and objets d’art. a pesar de que sobre esta iglesia ya existen documentos del Xii en que es mencionada, no fue construida hasta comienzos del siglo XiV. quizá lo que le ha otorgado a esta iglesia una fama mundial bien merecida es que en su interior se encuentra el lienzo de “el entierro del señor de orgaz”, de el greco. este cuadro representa a san esteban y san agustín apareciéndose tras la muerte de don gonzalo ruiz de toledo, señor de orgaz, para proceder a su enterramiento; la composición de esta obra está dividida en dos partes, en sus pinceladas inferiores vemos representado lo terrenal mientras que la parte superior refleja lo celestial. Even though there is documentation and historical reference to the construction of this church in the 12th century, it was not built until the beginning of the 14th century. The painting called “The Burial of Lord of Orgaz” is probably the reason for the world-wide acclaim of the church. This painting shows San Esteban and San Agustín after the death of Don Gonzalo Ruiz de Toledo, Lord of Orgaz, who appeared to bury him. esta sinagoga, edificada en 1355-57 por samuel leví, perteneció a los hebreos hasta su expulsión por los reyes católicos, convirtiéndose así en templo cristiano. sus muros están decorados por bellas grecas e inscripciones hebreas, así como con diversos motivos vegetales o mocárabes. el museo alberga la historia judía de españa y objetos de culto y tradición sefardita. The Synagogue El Tránsito was built in 1355-57 by Samuel Leví, and it belonged to the Hebrews until they were expelled by the Catholic Monarchs. It eventually became a Christian temple. Its walls are decorated with beautiful friezes and Hebrew inscriptions, as well as different decorative plant and Mozarab motifs. The museum exhibits the history of the Jews in Spain with a collection of liturgical and traditional Sephardic objects.

[ sinagoga santa maría la blanca ]
santa María la blanca, construida en el siglo Xiii, perteneció a los judíos hasta mitad del siglo XV, que pasó a ser consagrada como iglesia cristiana y utilizada por éstos como refugio de penitencia para mujeres arrepentidas. su bella construcción refleja toda su rica historia; el interior, cinco naves separadas por 28 arcos de herradura sobre pilares de ladrillo pintados con cal, descubre antojadizos adornos, artesonado de alerce o altares platerescos. Santa María la Blanca was built in the 13th century and belonged to the Jews until half of the century XV, when it was consecrated as a Christian church and used as a refuge for the penitence of women who repented of their sins. The beautiful construction reflects its rich heritage. Its interior boasts five naves which are separated by 29 horseshoe arches over lime-painted brick pillars, with fancy decorations, larch coffered ceilings and plateresque altars.

[ museo de los Concilios Visigosdos ]
considerada la más bella iglesia de toledo, fue mandada construir por los reyes católicos al maestro juan guas, para perpetuar la memoria de su victoria en la batalla de toro. una única y grandiosa nave con forma de cruz latina y cúpula estrellada forma el interior del monumento. cabe destacar en la capilla mayor los cinco grandes escudos de los reyes católicos, realizados con exquisito cuidado y sostenidos por enormes águilas, así como el claustro de gran belleza y el retablo del altar mayor.
templo de estilo mudéjar, exceptuando la capilla mayor que adquiere un estilo plateresco tras la reforma realizada en el siglo XVi. actualmente el Museo de los concilios y la cultura Visigoda se encuentra en este edificio, donde se guardan reproducciones de las coronas votivas del tesoro de guarrazar, restos visigodos y se protegen una colección de bellas pinturas murales románicas del siglo Xiii, perfectamente conservadas, así como una bella arcada de estilo califal con capiteles visigodos reutilizados.
San Juan de los Reyes is considered to be the most beautiful church in Toledo, and was built by the famous architect Juan Guas after the Catholic Monarchs appointed him to fulfill this great task and perpetuate the memory of the victory in the battle of Toro. The single and magnificent nave has a Latin cross plan and an interior star-shaped dome. The main chapel hosts the five great coats of arms of the Catholic Monarchs, finished with the utmost care and held by huge eagles. We can also highlight the beautiful cloister and altarpiece of the main altar.
This temple has an overall Mudejar style, even though the main chapel has a plateresque style after the modifications that were carried out during the 16th century. The Museum of the Visigoth Councils is currently hosted in this building and it exhibits accurate copies of the votive crowns of the Tesoro de Guarrazar, including Visigoth remains and a collection of beautiful Romanic mural paintings from the 13th century, which are in perfect condition. We can also see a fine caliph style arcade with Visigoth capitals that were used before in other constructions.

este monumento, también llamado Hospital de afuera, fue mandado construir por el cardenal tavera en 1541. atravesando su fachada renacentista, encontramos en su interior dos anchos patios perfectamente simétricos, con columnas dóricas y arcos jónicos. en el interior de su iglesia se encuentra el sepulcro del propio fundador. en el museo se pueden admirar obras de artistas como el greco, ribera, zurbarán, sánchez coello, tiziano o tintoretto. aloja en sus dependencias el archivo de la Nobleza. This monument is also called the “Hospital de Afuera”, which was built by cardinal Tavera in 1541. Its façade depicts a Renaissance style and inside we can see two perfectly symmetrical patios with Dorian columns and Ionian arches. The founder is buried inside the church. [ real Colegio de doncellas nobles ] el colegio de doncellas es, uno de los ejemplos más bellos del barroco toledano. además de su interés patrimonial, el edificio tiene un gran valor sentimental para muchos toledanos. allí se educaron numerosas generaciones de «doncellas», que tenían que justificar su «limpieza de sangre», es decir, no ser descendientes de moros, judíos o herejes, por mandato de su fundador, el cardenal silíceo, cuyo mausoleo preside la impresionante iglesia del palacio. The Colegio de Doncellas (school for girls) is one of the most beautiful examples of Baroque architecture in Toledo. In addition to its interest in terms of heritage, the building holds great sentimental value for many Toledo citizens. It was there that many generations of young ladies, or “doncellas”, were educated, who had to prove their “purity of blood” – in other words, that they were not descendants of Moors, Jews or heretics – by order of its founder, Cardinal Silíceo, whose mausoleum dominates the impressive palace church. [ mezquita del Cristo de la Luz ] edificio del siglo X; cuatro columnas de mármol con capiteles visigodos sustentan nueve cúpulas de diversos estilos. cuenta la leyenda que cuando el caballo del cid, llegando a este lugar, se arrodilló, fue descubierto un cristo que había sido sepultado por los cristianos para evitar la profanación de los musulmanes. la talla muestra la particularidad de tener los pies desviados de la posición general que corresponde a los crucifijos. The Mosque was built in the 10th century, with marble columns and Visigoth capitals that support the nine domes which are adorned and constructed in different styles. According to the legend, El Cid was brought to this place by his horse. He kneeled down and found an image of Christ which had been buried by the Christian followers to hide it from the Muslim. The image is peculiar, since the figure’s feet are sideways and not in the usual position of other crucifixes.

este convento construido en el siglo Xi y reformado en el XVi, es uno de los más antiguos de la ciudad y el magnífico retablo que exhibe es obra de el greco. su iglesia, de planta de cruz latina, consta de una sola nave y alberga una gran colección de retablos y pinturas de este artista; en su coro se pueden apreciar numerosas obras de arte. cuenta la leyenda que estas cuevas eran el palacio de Hércules, o lugar donde el rey rodrigo abrió un cofre prohibido, para descubrir la profecía que auguraba el final del reino visigodo a manos del islam.
en el interior de la iglesia se hallan los sepulcros de la infanta isabel de portugal, primogénita de los reyes católicos, y doña inés de ayala, bisabuela de Fernando el católico. todo el conjunto, así como su museo, se puede visitar.
ahora podemos ver los restos de un aljibe, el templo visigodo, la mezquita y la iglesia románica de san ginés del siglo Xii, que se sucedieron en el tiempo sobre las cuevas.

[ real Fundación de toledo ] [ museo Victorio macho ] se encuentra situado en el lugar conocido como la roca tarpeya, con vistas a un impresionante desfiladero sobre el río tajo, donde el célebre escultor palentino tenía su lugar de residencia y taller. en este mismo lugar, del que salieron sus creaciones, se expone hoy día su obra, cedida por el propio artista tras su muerte; esculturas, dibujos, apuntes y un audiovisual forman parte del Museo de Victorio Macho. se construyó sobre una antigua basílica visigótica, la de santa leocadia, reedificada en 1166. de esta época sólo se conserva el ábside mudéjar, quedando sólo fragmentos de su estilo visigodo. en su interior se encuentra el cristo de la Vega, talla que posee la peculiaridad de tener un brazo descolgado, detalle que dio lugar a la leyenda del poeta zorrilla, “a buen juez, mejor testigo”. esta iglesia está construida sobre una antigua mezquita musulmana. los arcos de herradura de época islámica se apoyan sobre columnas reutilizadas de origen romano y visigodo. en el exterior se pueden ver relieves visigodos reutilizados.
en la actualidad alberga un centro cultural Municipal gestionado por exposiciones culturales toledo. This building was once simultaneously a house, barracks and prison of the Santa Hermandad de Toledo (the Holy Brotherhood of Toledo), the force responsible for protecting the roads during the Middle Ages. The Casa-Posada retains part of the original structure from the late 15th century, as well as the facade, in the Gothic-Mudejar style, adorned with the coat of arms and emblem of the Catholic Monarchs. obra mudéjar construida en el siglo XVi que daba acceso a la medina musulmana hasta que la muralla fue ampliada, lo que le despojó de su función defensiva quedando de esta manera encerrada como segundo camino de paso. de planta rectangular terminada en semicírculo, sobre dos columnas se alza un gran arco apuntado que se adelanta a la puerta de arco de herradura. se elevan dos torres en mampostería, una semicircular y otra cuadrada, con almenas y ventanas.
The most beautiful and emblematic entrance to the city. It was built by the emperor Carlos V. Even though it has Arab origins, it was built and modified with clear Renaissance features in 1550 by Alonso de Covarrubias, a citizen of Torrijos, Toledo.The façade is crowned by a shield of arms over two solid masonry towers, which displays a two-headed eagle and it was handed over to Toledo by Carlos V.
A Mudejar construction which was built in the 16th century to provide access to the Muslim medina before the expansion of the wall. When the said construction was erected, its protective function was no longer of any use, becoming a second gate for transit. The rectangular plan is completed with a semicircular end and a large pointed arch is supported over two columns, right in front of the horseshoe arch gate. Two masonry towers are erected, one is semicircular and the other one is square, with battlements and windows.

esta puerta, también conocida como puerta Vieja de bisagra, fue en su día la principal entrada a la ciudad de toledo. en ella se unen el estilo cristiano y musulmán y conserva su fachada, compuesta de tres arcos de herradura, cobijándose en el mayor de ellos otro más, sin apenas retoques. Fue edificado por los árabes en el año 866, reemplazando a otro anterior romano situado poco más abajo. en 1257 fue derrumbado debido a un desbordamiento del río y vuelto a reedificar por alfonso X. el puente se asienta sobre dos arcos de medio punto, en el lado oeste tiene una puerta fortificada almenada con un arco de medio punto en el que está incluido otro de herradura, decorada con la estatua de san ildefonso y el escudo de los reyes católicos.
cuatro arcos sustentan este puente datado en el siglo XiV, que junto con el puente de alcántara formaba parte del recinto defensivo de la ciudad.
Built by the Moors during the year 866 to replace a Roman bridge that was built further down the river. It was demolished in 1257 by the overflowing river but was built again by Alfonso X later that year. The bridge is built over two round arches and a fortified round arch gate with battlements can be seen on the Western side, where another horseshoe arch is erected, decorated with a statue of San.
The central arch is the largest of the four arches; it is pointed and is 27 meters high. Two gates or towers protect the Goth framework of the bridge.
