The next event on Willunga’s 175th Anniversary program is a Black Tie Dinner on the 21st June at Willunga Rec Park. This event is being run in conjunction with the STARS (SOUTHERN THEATRE and ARTS Supporters) group.

STARS is a Willunga based organisation and is a non-profit organisation run by volunteers whose aim is to support and promote the development of the arts in the southern region and Fleurieu Peninsula of South Australia.

The event will feature a 4 course meal prepared by local chef Todd Steele featuring Fleurieu produce, local Willunga Wines and entertainment as selected by STARS. Attached is a poster which details the event and I would like to invite you and your friends to join the Willunga175 committee and STARS members at this event to help celebrate Willunga’s anniversary.

If you would like to attend also attached is an order form for tickets and if you can complete the form and return it to the address on the form or myself it would be greatly appreciated.

NEWS and FEATURES RE-DISCOVERED" The said trunk is actually a Police issue safe used by the Police @ the Court House in the 1800's provenance made in Liverpool,UK. In 1929 it was taken from the Court House to the new Police Station, Main Rd ( next to the Recreation Centre.)

As described, it has been returned to the Court House now as a museum piece.

Thank you chaps not an easy procedure,makes you think how they took it down to the new premises all those years ago.

NATIONAL TRUST WILLUNGA BRANCH NEWS The Cemetery Walks for History Month (17th & 18th May) were well attended,with interest from locals & families with a connection to Willunga,some of which went on to do further research at the Court House. We will ultimately combine the research on the Cemeteries into a folder to be kept at the Court House for public use.

Janet Molloy, Principal, says: “This is a wonderful initiative and helps to give an insight into the job that is often a bit of a mystery to students. To the student, it’s obvious what the teachers jobs are but what does the Principal do? What skills are required? How do they get to be Principal? With whom do they interact?

How many things do they need to know about in the school? Do they have to do everything themselves?

Who helps them? And so the questions can go on.

At the end of our time together, I hope that Fern will have an understanding of what I do and how I go about it in order to support the ethos and the

The STARS annual fundraiser, The da Ponte Project – Making Mozart, was an enormous success, with 220 people attending, standing ovations as well comments on the way out from guests which were overwhelmingly supportive and in praise of the production.

The short three act play by Ewart Shaw, which left the audience wanting more, included extracts from The Marriage of Figaro, Cosi Fan Tutte and Don Giovanni. A world class treat for those attending.

To the cast Ewart Shaw, Gisele Blanchard, Mario Bellanova, Catriona Barr and Jamie Cock, our thanks and congratulations on a truly wonderful performance.

Tales of a would be activist – Jeff Simmons The Leard State Forest in the Namoi River Valley between Narrabri and Gunnedah in northern NSW is the site of the new Whitehaven Coal Mine, the biggest new coal mine in Australia. This mine received government approval to go ahead in a nationally listed, critically endangered box woodland home of 30 rare and endangered species and in excess of 40 indigenous burial sites, despite illegal offsets claims, overwhelming community opposition and processes that drain huge amounts of precious local ground and surface water as well as regular blasting that will pump massive amounts of extremely toxic gasses and dust into the air over nearby farms and the township of Boggabri if the wind is blowing that way.

Blockading this little number sounds like a good way to spend the uni holidays. This is the story of my first attempt.

Action 1 So, it’s up at 3am for a 4am departure. Decked out in the requisite camouflage gear and compulsory balaclavas two teams of 5 jump into the 4WDs and head for the forest. We scored “Bambie” the Green Peace land rover.

“Rambo” the other Green Peace vehicle, wasn’t living up to its’ name. It’s broken transmission meant the other team used a weekend warrior

NEWS and FEATURES borrowed from one of the volunteers. Each team had a mine entrance to blockade with timber dragged from the forest to delay workers continuing their daily mayhem by preventing them driving to where their machines of mass destruction were.

Our trump card inspired by, but not completely the brainchild of yours truly, was to first fill the gate padlocks with supu glue.

Arriving within striking distance of our target, Bambie screeches to a halt. Leaping out, we all dive for cover. Making our way by moonlight through the shrubbery, to the entrance gate we set about our task with enthusiasm and finesse.

We ram the biggest logs we can find and carry between 5, through the bars of the gate, and criss cross them chaotically creating a forest abstract art work to be proud of. It was so much fun we then entered the premises and made two more such constructions further down the road. The security arrive and we melt into the shadows like a French underground war movie.

We make our way down a series of dry creek beds to a hiding spot to wait out the furore we have created. After two hours of my now infamous lateral thinking puzzles, we make our way to in sight of the road and call our pick up. Bambie returns and barely stops before we are all inside, stripping off our balaclavas. We arrive back in camp to a hero’s welcome at about 11am.

Rock-n-roll . We came saw, we kicked their butts.

Well, not really This is what really happened. My camouflage gear consisted

of my Waldorf School gardening uniform, my balaclava, a thermal underwear top tied round my head to reveal only my eyes.

We in fact drove past our intended destination and had to circle back. A team member who shall remain nameless forgot the glue, but we did create some awesome structures, and yes we did sight the security and melt into the shadows like a French underground war movie.

When we came out of hiding after two hours, we were surprised to see all our artwork still intact.

Apparently our gate was more of a back entrance and the few workers who arrived just drove round the front. Our other team there had only created a minor obstacle by the time workers started arriving.

The workers dismantled it easily barely breaking stride. Our team returned and started again but kept getting interrupted before they had created anything of consequence. When the guys who were turned away by our mighty structure arrived round the front, they just cruised on in.

warning when the wind is blowing in their direction because blasting releases toxic dust and gasses to be avoided at all costs. You can also ring up to find out about the blasting.

Someone from our camp found out that there was to be blasting at 10.30am this morning. They passed on the info to the afore described lynch pin but because he had already picked up the only group he was aware of, he didn’t give it a second thought.

For some reason, the guy who originally came by the information knew we were still out there. He called a farmer friend of his who was on relatively good terms with the mine and this farmer got the mine to put the blasting put off.

Whooooaaaaa Lots of good learning for when I return to stir up some action re the Penola fracking.

And finally, we had to wait an extra hour for pick up because when we called in, the message receiver, ( the lynch pin of the whole campaign) didn’t know there were two groups of us and went to pick up the others.

OK, so we really hadn’t made a difference and ours was not the smoothest operation on record, but at least we got out in one piece. Well, we almost didn’t.

There’s another mine very near which blasts quite often. When it does, the mine is required to give local farmers a four hour

Premiership Memories at Willunga Football Club Apart from the fact that Willunga FC turned 140 on May 29th the Club is also celebrating 10 premiership anniversaries this year going back to 1954.

Past players and officials will be getting together to relive the games that have contributed to WFC’s amazing on field success which has spanned 140 years and has seen the Club play a major role in finals in both the Southern League and the Great Southern League in that period.

Demons Defeat Determined Pies Willunga welcomed back several players from injury, overseas and work: Goolwa were missing several key players. Both teams played the first quarter as if they were coming to grips with the new combinations.

Defence ruled which meant that as soon as one team thwarted an attack and rebounded the ball, the other teams defence won the ball and sent it back from whence it came. Steel marked strongly and kicked truly to score the only goal of the quarter. Wakefield should have nailed another but missed.

Goolwa opened the second quarter with two goals in the first minute.

Litster got the first when Robertson’s centre clearance fell over the back. He bounced it through. Campbell’s came from a 50 metre snap that drifted with the slight breeze. Willunga steadied.

Haskett was dominant and his long kick gave Altus the run of the ball.

Despite strong opposition his third effort saw him break free and kick accurately.

Willunga scored back to back goals when Steele snuck a handball over the top to Standfield who ran into an open goal. The Magpies steadied and in a repeat of the first quarter the ball moved rapidly from one goal square to the other and back again.

A 35 metre snap by Fry drifted through to make it three in a row for the Demons. Hank got one back for the Magpies and then Chesser blocked a Willunga handball to stop a certain Willunga reply.

Altus should have kicked his second but chose to short pass. His kick missed his target which symbolised the short comings of both teams: strong defence, fast running wingers and onballers followed buy ineffective kicks into the forward line.

Lees and Weise broke the lines for the Magpies as did Balas and Altus for the Demons. Standfield posted a late goal and had the opportunity to score his third but he failed to mark an Altus wellweighted kick.

Both teams tackled brilliantly all day. Renney’s tackle in the second half, and his bullet pass to

Lahiff, who goaled, gave Willunga a strong grip on a low scoring game.

McKinlay missed an opportunity to get one back for the Magpies but Campbell’s kick was true.

The Maggys dominated the next five minutes but kicked four points a row.

Eventually the momentum swung Willunga’s way and Burdett’s precision pass hit Lahiff on a strong lead.

He goaled and Willunga steadied. Fergusson’s late reply was set up by McKinlay and Campbell’s hard running. His goal kept the Magpies in touch at three quarter time.

Demons but McKinlay kicked truly for the Magpies.

They moved a step closer to victory when at the 30 second mark of the last quarter when Weise ran free and gave Robertson the opportunity to goal.

He did. Both defences tightened up. The game was in the balance. Trent Griffen rebounded and ran to receive but Alexopoulos did the same for Willunga. His use of the ball was better than Griffen’s. His long kick found Steele who hit up Lahiff who kicked a long steadying goal. He kicked another two minutes later after an Alexopoulos handball found Wakefield in space. He ran and bounce and his kick hit Lahiff who was making a smart lead. The goal of the day resulted.

The champion team for Tuesday nights was the MAKOS, Congratulations go to Manfred Unger, Craig Martin, Gary White and Jordan Plaice.

Willunga won by five goals in a hard tackling, free flowing game dominated by attacking defenders.

WILLUNGA TABLE TENNIS We have completed the summer season. The standard of play continues to improve thanks to the arrival of some very good players and the improvement shown by others, especially juniors.

The Wednesday competition was won by Matt Bruer and Norman Wallis. They were the most successful in the regular singles competition which included handicaps.

This format was popular and will be considered in the future.

The Annual Singles Championship was played

recently. Congratulations go to George Abdilla who defeated George Colombin in the grand final. This was his first win in this event.

For the first time in eight years, WTTC has a representative team of six players in the Central Hills Table Tennis Association during the winter season.

Organised by John Nixon and successful so far. We defeated McLaren Vale BLue 11 - 4 and narrowly defeated Macclesfield 8 - 7 in the second game of the season.

Our next local season begins in September. In the meantime, some Tuesday and Wednesday nights are available for an introduction to the game, practice and coaching.

“DIVERSITY” BY SHEP

1956, and migrated to Australia as a child with his parents and grew up in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. Shep worked as a teacher for over 20 years, then 4WD Driver / Tour Guide on Kangaroo Island, but now enjoys life as a full time artist. From an early age Shep always enjoyed drawing, and started his art career working in pen and ink, often featuring rustic rural scenes and historic buildings. In 1997 Shep ventured into colour, painting in acrylics, and oils. Shep has taught painting/drawing workshops and enjoys working as an ‘artist in residence’ for venues and schools.

He has artwork in private collections throughout the world. Shep lives on Kangaroo Island, where he has his working studio and art gallery “Sheps Studio” -------

Significant Remembrances Our faith community at Willunga Uniting has farewelled one of its long time members, Garth Dempster, we remembered him well.

We also celebrated in worship the 50th wedding anniversary of another couple, Reg and Mary Hall, faithful members of Willunga Uniting.

Over our Anzac day weekend, many of us remembered the lives of those lost and killed in wars.

We sent out our congregation with Rosemary, that’s for remembrance: pray, love, remember.

Our mothers’ day remembrance worship was a time of sharing those inspirational women who had inspired us on our faith journey. This included modern day prophets such as Mother Teresa.

Our birthday celebrations in Willunga will include worship, songs, stories and kids’ activities. This occurs on Sunday morning at 10.30am. Our cuppa afterwards usually includes yummy scones – proceeds from our cuppa are aiding the appeal for our pipe organ restoration.

Winter concert to warm the Soul Willunga Chamber Orchestra After the delights of their April autumn concert the Willunga chamber orchestra is looking ahead to its winter concert.

The autumn concert was very well received. With a varied program including the delightful Vivaldi’s Spring.

The concert also aided Willunga Uniting Church which has many programs happening, including the restoration of its heritage pipe organ.

The winter concert will be held again at Bethany Hall, Willunga Uniting Church, which is on the corner of

Looking in his rear view mirror, he saw a highway patrol car, blue lights flashing and siren blaring.

He floored it to 140 kph, then 180kph, then suddenly he thought, “What am I doing? I’m too old for this!” and pulled over to await the copper’s arrival.

Pulling in behind him, the copper got out of his vehicle and walked up to the car. He looked at his watch, then said, “Sir, my shift ends in 30 minutes.

Today is Friday. If you can give me a new reason for speeding – a reason I’ve never before heard – I’ll let you go..”

The old gentleman paused then said, “Three years ago, my wife ran off with a policeman, I thought you were bringing her back.”

“Have a good day, Sir,” replied the copper.

Willunga was initially established as a staging point and government reserve at the foot of the ranges on the south coast route. For a while, Willunga was the most prosperous town in the south and was the centre for the southern districts.

The Old Bush Inn, which holds the second oldest hotel licence in South Australia, was built in 1839 as a resting place for travellers.

In 1922, Norman Wilfred Baker became notorious as the “boy bushranger of Willunga”. Wearing a black mask and carrying a rifle, he held up and robbed a man driving a cart and then escaped into the Mt Compass bush.

Peter Dawson the famous singer lived in Willunga as a child Andrew Bovell, award winning writer for theatre, film and television resides in Willunga. Credits include Strictly Ballroom and Lantana Willunga Recreational Park is owned and managed by the community of Willunga

Willunga makes the switch to the NBN Home and business owners yet to place an order for services over the NBN can still connect.

Home and business owners in parts of Willunga who have not placed an order for services over the National Broadband Network (NBN) are urged to contact their preferred internet service provider or phone company as soon as possible.

Most existing landline phone, ADSL internet and Telstra cable internet services will be switched off progressively in parts of Willunga from today.

If a home or business has not placed an order for services over the NBN, they will have access to a soft dial tone for a minimum of 20 working days after their existing services have been disconnected. This allows for emergency phone calls to 000 and calls to Telstra’s service and fault centre. Internet services will not work after disconnection has occurred.

Trent Williams, Spokesperson for NBN Co said: “This an exciting time for Willunga as it is among the first locations in the country to make the switch to the NBN. We urge any residents who want to keep using these services to contact their preferred phone company or internet service provider as soon as possible. Residents who have already placed an order but are yet to have their equipment installed should not be disconnected at this time.

We are particularly urging people with special equipment including EFTPOS terminals and medical and security alarms which operate using a landline phone connection to contact their preferred phone company and internet service provider immediately.”

Home and business owners yet to place an order for services over the NBN need to take the following steps: 1. Contact your preferred internet service provider or phone company: a. If you have a medical alarm or alert (or a family member, carer or friend) you are encouraged to register your details with NBN Co’s Medical Alarm Register by calling 1800 227 300 or complete the online form at: nbnco.com.au/medicalregister. b. If you have an EFTPOS terminal, fax or alarm system, call the provider of that service (for example your bank) to ask what internet or landline phone services over the NBN will support the device. c. If your building has an emergency lift phone and/or a fire indicator panel you are encouraged to register your details with NBN Co so these services can be identified by calling 1800 687 626. d. Contact your preferred phone company or internet service provider and discuss your requirements.

2. Choose: a plan that suits your needs.

3. Order: your service over the NBN as soon as possible.
