PUBLIC MEETING ENDORSES BENDIGO BANK OPTION Bank S.A. closes its Willunga Branch and its officials face the community. Disgruntled residents attending a public meeting called by the Willunga Business and Tourism Association voted to explore banking options, in particular those on offer from Bendigo Bank. Willunga residents filled the community conference room at the Willunga Hub, to hear the Bank S.A. General Manager of retail banking, Mike Barrett, explain the reasoning behind the announcement by Bank S.A. to close its Willunga branch. Mr Barrett explained that the decision reflected customer behaviour in the market place; that numbers of transactions over the counter in Willunga had been dropping markedly over recent months, and that the expected rise in transactions after the close of the ANZ bank did not eventuate. He flagged the possibility of a limited service in the way of a restricted agency being set up in Willunga. Mr Barrett agreed under questioning that such an agency would not provide the same level of service as for instance the Westpac agency in McLaren Vale.

up in Willunga BUT for that to happen, there would need to be a significant commitment from the community, not just transactions but in savings and loans. At the completion of his presentation and following a Q&A session, the meeting resolved that:

“ this meeting is willing to endorse the option of exploring the establishment of a Bendigo Bank presence in Willunga.” Having been asked to say a few words to the residents at the beginning of the meeting, Mayor Rosenberg spoke briefly about the resilience of the Willunga community and its ability to find a way forward when faced with challenges. It was a timely reminder to all at the meeting that the community wasn’t going to roll over with nothing more than a whimper.

The following is a summary of the responses, all of which were supported by a large majority of those in attendance.  That Bank S.A. had reneged on its commitment to stay open after the demise of the local ANZ branch – ‘we are here to stay’  That the absence of a bank offering face to face service severely affected the daily operation of local business e.g. depositing cash at the end of or during the day.  That travelling to McLaren Vale to bank reduces the likelihood of customers supporting other businesses in Willunga, e.g. more regular shopping done in McLaren Vale.  That an empty bank premise in any town gives out a negative message to visitors and potential new business.  That Bank S.A. when faced with imminent closure failed to engage with the Willunga community in an attempt to rebuild the customer base. No attempt was made by the bank to set up a public meeting to discuss ways of keeping it as a viable operating bank in Willunga. When the meeting was asked to discuss options for the community, Ron Logan, the chair of the board of the Aldinga Beach Community Bank, a franchisee of Bendigo and Adelaide Bank, was invited to address the meeting. He was confident that if the Willunga community was prepared to support the venture, that a Bendigo Bank agency could be set Willunga Gazette – published by Willunga Business and Tourism, PO Box 22, Willunga SA 5172 www.willunga.com

ASSEMBLE THE TEAM As the year draws rapidly to a close, the Willunga175 committee is still working hard to present yet another fun event for residents and guests alike. This time, we’ve decided to challenge your brains with a quiz night, which will be held on Saturday 22 November in the Willunga Recreation Park Stadium. Doors open at 7 pm for a 7.30 pm start and the cost is only $10 per head. Participants can BYO drinks and supper, and drinks will also be available for purchase. Our experienced quiz master, Peter Cesco, is compiling a set of questions that will both challenge and educate you. ‘There will be plenty of general knowledge questions,” Peter says, “but the committee has also asked me to include some about Willunga itself. This won’t disadvantage nonresidents though, because there will be flyers with all this information displayed around the town for several weeks before the quiz night.” “Our aim in including specific Willunga-related questions in this quiz was two-fold,” explains Willunga175 Chairman, Graham Ormsby. “We hope people will visit Willunga prior to the night and patronise those businesses that are displaying ‘Willunga Facts’. That way, as they contribute to Willunga’s economy, they will learn more about our special town, its famous

characters and its interesting history – as well as getting a heads-up about potential quiz questions.” Assemble your team of brains and secure your table by calling either Brian, on 0418 807 529, or Jenny on 0439 755 750. There will be plenty of prizes to win.

Willunga Waldorf School officially open their newest school structure which the students have built by hand On Friday 7 November at 3.30pm the first Willunga Waldorf School teacher, Marita Huxholl, will visit the school to open the brand new, hand built, mud brick, chicken house. As part of the

materials, function, features and appearance. The teacher then incorporated as many elements of the students’ designs into one design. After the school approved the proposal, the students spent three weeks building the chicken house that included nearly 400 bricks they have been making by hand since the beginning of the year.

The students spent 3 weeks looking at different types of building techniques from Aboriginal shelters to African Adobe shelters. In addition to this, the class teacher, Andrew Banks, arranged for some trades people to come and talk to the students including a carpenter and designer. The students were then asked to design and create a model of a chicken house, taking into account

The chickens will be placed in their new home as part of the official opening ceremony. Janet Molloy, Principal says “We’re excited to open our newest building – what a triumph for the students, parents and teacher who have worked together so beautifully to create a new home for our chickens.” Class 3 student, Katja McCumiskey, was excited to talk about the building project. Katja said “We made the bricks by hand! We got wooden squares then we mixed 20 clay, 10 sand and 5 straw, put this into the moulds and let them dry. It’s quite a big chicken house for 4 hens and the run is very big. When we put the hens in, that’s going to be good and other people have said that it’s going to be like a hotel for them!” -------

Students Doing Great Things Our names are Ada and Hannah. We are both 8 years old. We wanted to raise money for WWF to save endangered species. We had a stall at the Willunga Environment Centre where we had a raffle, busked, and sold our old second hand toys. We put posters up all over Willunga and all around our school. We had some help from our friends who donated toys too, and

came and helped on the day. We found out one of our friends has a special talent for selling raffle tickets. She sold the whole 100. We would like to thank Stella and Sage for helping us. We raised $175.50..

Lorraine Poole purchased Fern Forest Nursery on 10th November 2010, after deciding Willunga was where she wanted to live. She was attracted to the quaintness of the town and the funkiness of the community events Willunga had to offer. Lorraine says it is a “small town with sophisticated attitudes”. Fern Forest is a specialised nursery, dealing in lush tropical foliage, palms, bamboos, gingers, cycads and ferns. Fernies as it is fondly called is also host to a music night on the 2nd Friday of every month. The Nursery has been running for over 20 years but when Lorraine purchased it there was a lot of work to do, with a little horticulture experience, she has been able to turn this drought affected business into a flourishing healthy nursery. On the grounds of this property Lorraine and her staff maintain a beautiful walking trail and lush tropical forest currently hosting lovely camellias blooming in the cool shade of the palms. Within this amazing space there is a summer house used to host garden weddings. Lorraine has opened this beautiful arbor to hire for anyone wishing to have an afternoon wedding, perfect for the summer months under a canopy of tall trees. http://www.fernforest.com.au/

Willunga Events Can you hold your breath underwater for 7 minutes?

La Terre Cafe in Willunga now has NEW EXTENDED HOURS for that 'after work' glass or two! Just in time for those end of year get-togethers or after work wind down, La Terre has a new Wine Bar license to 7pm Wednesday, Thursday & Friday. Great wines from small producers all available by the glass, with a delicious new Bar Menu. And delicious boutique beers as well! So come, relax and unwind with a glass or two and perhaps try some Duck Rillette & crusty baguette, or a tasty Bar Platter of fabulous French & local cheeses, meats & accompaniments. Or for something a little more substantial try the classic French Onion Soup or Duck Cassoulet. Hope to see you there!

Diving with full breathing apparatus is one thing, but Willunga Waldorf School year 12 student Tom Campbell decided to ‘take the plunge’ this year when he chose free-diving as his year 12 project entitled: “The Ocean One Breath at a Time: Entering the Amazing World of Free Diving.” Tom has been mentored by local Adelaide diver, Brent Quilliam, currently a National and World class freediving competitor. Free-diving relies on the diver’s ability to hold his or her breath until resurfacing without the aid of breathing apparatus. Tom explains “Extreme sports are all about adrenaline but free-diving requires complete calm. You have to listen to your body and recognise your own limits. You have to learn how to shut out the world and work with, rather than fight, your survival instincts. It’s all in the mind!” Tom recently placed 2nd in the “Fish Film Festival” with a short documentary entitled “The Ocean One Breath at a Time”. Tom shot his footage whilst free-diving and it is indicative of the extraordinary opportunity a diver has to capture spectacular footage whilst moving through the water in such an unobtrusive way.
