WILLUNGA ---GAZETTE---

Gazette via email

A monthly publication of the Willunga Business and Tourism Association Inc This was a measured and informative meeting, not to be underestimated by those absent. All speakers were mindful of the difficulties brought to bear by legislation, and understood the dilemma for Council staff. Nevertheless the meeting was scathing in its criticism of the Council’s categorising of this development and was equally critical of the mindset of the developers.

COMMUNITY ACTION: WILLUNGA, THE PLACE OF GREEN TREES

Building on the actions of a core group of residents concerned about the fate of trees at the Aldinga Rd housing development led by members of the Friends of Willunga Basin and its chair, Geoff Hayter, a series of meetings and events took place that galvanised the wider community. On Wednesday the 11th of March, a public meeting was called by the Willunga Business and Tourism Association in order to seek clarification on the fate of trees at the Aldinga road housing development. Sixty people attended the football clubrooms to hear an address by Geoff Hayter and to take part in what turned out to be an informative Q&A session. In the absence of representatives from the developers, (Willunga Developments) and the City of Onkaparinga, Geoff was able to tread a carefully balanced path under the circumstances, aided by well informed, well-read members of the audience.

The following evening saw in excess of a hundred Willunga residents attend the Development Assessment Panel’s meeting at the Council Chambers at Noarlunga Centre to hear the panel discuss the developer’s submission. The impact of so many people quietly registering a visually silent protest must have been felt by the panel, and there was no doubt that there was more than a sense of discomfort in the responses and questions to the spokesperson for Willunga Developments. While the panel provided some breathing space and the tress were given a ‘stay of execution’ this was an opportunity missed by the panel. It was a case of what was not prosecuted by the panel more so than what was. While the chair commended the behaviour of the gallery, he was clearly pleased to see the space empty once the discussion had closed. A week to the hour after the previous week’s public meeting, the WBTA called another one, this time focusing on the planned High St development. This time eighty people attended the football clubrooms to hear a panel led by the project leader Victoria Masterman speak about the report to be presented to council the following Tuesday, and field questions from the floor. Your Community News COMMUNITY ACTION: WILLUNGA, THE PLACE OF GREEN TREES – continued.. Ms Masterman was joined by the project manager Adam Mrotek and Matt Buckle. The meeting followed a pattern of questions or comments backed up by indications of measures of support by the audiencecomments/suggestions were then recorded. Although the report had been completed, the panel had assured the meeting that the feedback from the floor would be relayed to the meeting of council the following week. The panel and all twenty councilors received copies of the minutes taken in the days following the public meeting. While there were a number of recommendations made in relation to a range of concerns, the assurance by Ms Masterman that high priority would be given to protecting existing trees in High St, was among the more significant. A full transcript of notes taken by Tom Laing is available on request. (By the time the Gazette goes to print, there will have been observers from the WBTA present in the gallery at the March 24th council meeting) A group of residents has formed a working party ready to assist the council in aspects of the artistic and aesthetic presentation of High St. It is expected that the

project team will work closely with this group in order to utilise the many and diverse talents of our residents. Watch this space for more information on this. -------

Letters to the editor:

March readers will remember Jenny Morris from the UK who was looking for her long lost friend, Rose. The two ladies met over 20 years ago and promised to stay in touch with each other. Jenny wrote to me:

filled with great intentions and success! Well done everyone.

Response: Hi Adele, Thank you for your email.

Hi Helen, The Gazette just gets better and better! :) Another job well done (regarding the March edition) Cheers Cheryll

Considering myself to also be a foodie, I collect recipe books! I spend many nights curled up with a packet of post it notes and my recipe books, marking what I would like to make next. I also use the internet for variations of recipes that I find in my books.

To the Editor, I regard myself as quite a foodie and really enjoy seeing the monthly recipes in the gazette. I was wondering where you get your recipes from for the monthly issues. Also, are we able to send some recipes in to be shared with the readers? Thanks, Adele

I definitely welcome readers to send in recipes that they have tested as I want the Gazette to be driven by the community. If you have a recipe to send though to me, please do so at: willungagazette@gmail. com

“We two strangers got talking as ladies do over a little libation and had a good laugh, we promised to keep in touch with the odd letter which we did for a number of years, I wrote to her a few years back and never got a reply which I am hoping she may have moved house and this was the reason for no reply” With the help of the Willunga Gazette and local residents notifying Rose, the two long lost friends have been reunited and will be meeting up when Jenny visits Australia later in April. The ladies have assured me that they will be in touch with their success story and a few happy snaps! The community power in Willunga is that of a strong one

Response: Hi Adele,

Your Community News Recipe of the Month: Anzac Biscuits

in cookbooks in the 1920s. They were sometimes called "Anzac crisps" or "Anzac crispies" (not "Anzac cookies", as one would assume) in reference to their hardness. The earliest recipe for these "crispies" found to date is from a New Zealand cookbook published in 1921.

and were considered very nutritious, which is why they were included. Although associated with wartime, the biscuits were less common in WW2 as ships had better refrigeration, allowing goods such as fruitcake to be transported to troops stationed overseas.

The Original Recipe About Anzac Biscuits For all that they represent what we have in common, the history of Anzac biscuits is highly contested. Both Australia and New Zealand claim to have invented the cookie-like Anzac biscuit that we now know, but its origins are not clear.

The original biscuit was not sweet at all; rather it was a savoury hardtack biscuit (also known as an Anzac tile or wafer) that was used in soldiers' rations as a substitute for bread. The first known Anzac biscuit recipe appeared in The War Chest Cookery Book, which was published in Sydney in 1917, but this recipe was for a cake, not a biscuit. It is said that biscuits with a similar recipe to the one we knew today appeared in magazines under different names, sometimes called "Rolled Oat Biscuits" or "Soldier's Biscuits". The current name only came about after the legendary ANZAC Gallipoli Campaign. Anzac biscuit recipes, in the form we know them today, began appearing

The crunchiness of the biscuits was important when the recipe first came about. Although we now see recipes for more chewy versions, the original biscuits – whatever their name at the time – had to stay fresh for the months it took them to reach soldiers overseas.

It is said that women at home came up with the recipe based on ingredients that were readily available, namely oats, sugar, flour, coconut, butter, golden syrup or treacle, bicarbonate of soda and boiling water. None of these spoiled easily, which meant that the biscuits would stay fresh for longer. Eggs were scarce during the war, and made baked goods more likely to spoil, which is why melted butter and treacle were used as binding agents, and bi-carb soda as a leavening agent. Both Australia and New Zealand had an extensive number of Scottish immigrants and descendants, so some say that the original recipe was based on a Scottish biscuits recipe. Oats were eaten extensively in Scotland

Ingredients: 150g (1 cup) plain flour 90g (1 cup) rolled oats (see Notes) 85g (1 cup) desiccated coconut 100g (1/2 cup, firmly packed) brown sugar 55g (1/4 cup) caster sugar 125g butter 2 tablespoons golden syrup 2 tablespoons water 1/2 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda Method: Step 1 Preheat oven to 160°C. Line 2 baking trays with nonstick baking paper. Step 2 Combine flour, oats, coconut and combined sugar in a large bowl. Step 3 Stir the butter, golden syrup and water in a small saucepan over medium heat until the butter melts and the mixture is smooth. Stir in the bicarbonate of soda. Add to the oat mixture and stir until well combined. Step 4 Roll level tablespoonful’s of the oat mixture into balls and place, about 5cm apart, on the prepared trays. Flatten until about 1cm thick. Bake, swapping trays halfway through cooking, for 15 minutes or until light golden. Set aside for 10 minutes to cool slightly before transferring to wire racks to cool completely Step 5 Boil the kettle, make your favorite warm beverage and bite, dunk… however you eat it…enjoy! 5

Your Community News many local lads from Willunga and surrounding districts were farewelled by the ladies of the Willunga Cheer-up Society and, if they were fortunate enough to eventually return from the war zones, they received an enthusiastic heroes’ welcome. Newspaper reports of the time describe how the returned soldiers were treated to a guard of honour formed by members of the Cheerup Society. The ladies wore demure nurse-like white uniforms, with cape and veil, but that didn’t stop them kicking up their heels at the social dances and sing-alongs that followed the formal speeches of welcome and congratulation.

perhaps as a family heirloom. The role of the Cheer-up Society in Willunga is not well documented, so we are keen to find out more about this dedicated group of women and how they honoured our soldiers. If there are some family stories or recollections, we would love to hear them. Any information that current or former residents can provide for this project will be most welcome.
