Willunga takes out the ‘Best Dressed Town’ award for Stage 5 Santos Tour Down Under
WHAT IS HAPPENING TO OUR TREES?
Willunga’s Definition: A place of green tree’s. In recent weeks individuals and groups in Willunga have been made aware of plans to remove the paper bark trees from the Willunga High Street and selected gum trees at the Bassett Street housing development property. The unclear notification is leaving residents/community members and environmental groups disappointed and in up-roar. The time has come to hold a public meeting to clarify all the concerns we all have regarding the Willunga trees.
Public Meeting: Featuring the wonderful figurines created by Brian Reader several years ago for an international themed event in Willunga, Willunga was awarded, not for the first time, the prestigious Stage 5 Best Dressed Town Award. Decorations Coordinator, Angela Lisman was keen to showcase a ‘multi-national theme’ for this year’s event. Given the broad spectrum of riders from many and diverse countries it seemed like a natural thing to do. So out from storage came the figurines. International flag bunting was acquired, balloon colours reflected countries’ flags’ primary colours, supplemented by the Caporn-March designed Penny Farthings and displays of the striking Willunga feathers. None of this could have happened of course without the volunteer help provided by WBTA committee, family, friends and traders along High St.
7pm Wednesday March 11 Willunga Football Clubrooms ‘The meeting will be organised by the Willunga Business and Tourism Association. Guest speakers will provide insights into the current controversy over the fate of trees in our town. Like many of the residents in Willunga, the WBTA committee members are seeking clarity on this issue. It is hoped that by the end of the meeting, the issues have been well defined and understood. It will be an opportunity for concerned residents to voice their fears and offer their thoughts. Because this had to be organised at late notice given the degree of urgency, we appreciate the co-operation of the Willunga Football Club. It is typical of the community spirit of this town.

Your Community News Local Business Profile – First National Nick van Vliet Nick van Vliet, principal of Willunga based real estate agency First National Nick van Vliet is already a familiar face in our community, however, Nick will perhaps be even more prominent now that he can proudly boast he’s officially Number 1! Nick has lived and worked in Willunga since 1988, with 18 years spent as the co-owner of Willunga Antiques. Outstanding returns from early property investment, renovations and development bred a longstanding passion for real estate and in September 2008 Nick commenced a new career as a real estate agent. Hard work, dedication and enthusiasm working alongside renowned local agents within the First National Group helped Nick to achieve early success. The natural progression was to develop his own business and in early 2012 Nick became the principal of his own office. Since this time, Nick has consistently received numerous awards and accolades for his work. Now, Nick can proudly announce being the Number 1 Salesperson for 2014. A goal that Nick has aimed for since the day he began in real estate, this dream became reality at the recent First National GEM awards. These awards recognise excellence and celebrate the best performances of 2014 within the entire First National Group across SA and NT. An accolade that can only be earned by hard work and devotion, this was further complemented by the office achieving several awards, including a place within the top 10 ‘Sales Offices of the Year’. Nick also achieved several other personal accolades including the prestigious ‘Diamond Award for Combined Listings’, with colleague Mike Stillwell being awarded a ‘Silver Award for Combined Commission’. Nick said “First National’s slogan is “We Put You First” and this is a principal I have always stood by. My number one priority is, and always has been, achieving the best results for both vendors and purchasers. I have the support of my wonderful family, friends, clients and team mates to thank for this success and I am so proud that it has led to this award. Goal setting is vital in achieving success so my new goal is Number 1 Sales Person Australia wide! I am here to help you achieve your goals too and always happy to chat”.
In February, First National Real Estate Nick van Vliet was recognised for its outstanding achievement at the General Excellence and Marketing (GEM) Awards, held at Adelaide Oval. Nick and his team received the highest and most honorable awards including: Sales Office of the Year Top Ten, Highest Number of Settled Sales – Rural, Highest Number of Exclusive Listings – Rural and the Sales Person of the Year award plus many more!
Nick said the First National GEM Awards are an important event as they present an opportunity for the network's members to celebrate achievements, while encouraging their colleagues to aspire to an ongoing process of performance improvement that benefits customers. “We are committed to consistently delivering exceptional service through carefully listening to client needs, regular communication, preparation, team work, constant training, marketing excellence, evaluation and implementation of new systems, strategies and technology in response to changing market conditions” 3 x P = SOLD! Your Community News ANOTHER FAIR DAY IN WILLUNGA
Originally planned as a “one-off” day as part of Willunga’s 175th anniversary celebrations in 2014, the Discover Willunga Fair was so incredibly successful, that the Willunga Business and Tourism Association (WBTA) has decided to make it an annual event. ‘We were delighted with the enthusiastic response from local businesses, clubs and organisations, who saw the fair as a great opportunity to showcase their enterprises,’ said WBTA Chairman and former Willunga175 committee member, David Greenslade. ‘Equally, visitor numbers exceeded expectations and the positive feedback we received from people of all ages told us that this was an event worth replicating.’ This year, the volunteer organising committee will comprise Wine Coast councillor, Hazel Wainwright (Chair), David Greenslade (WBTA), Brian Dempsey (Willunga Recreation Park), Kath Rayner (National Trust), Jenny Richards (Budgetting adviser) and Chris Horsman (Publicity Coordinator).

Stalls are free for community organisations and only $50 for businesses.’ Given that 2015 is the centenary of the arrival of the railway in Willunga, the local branch of the National Trust is planning a display of railway memorabilia, including several model railway layouts. ‘We would also like to feature other oldtime modes of transport, such as horse-drawn carts and early motor vehicles,’ added Ms Rayner.
A ‘Fernies’ dilemma solved – Written by Dave Greenslade
There will be food stalls, entertainment and “come and try” activities for all ages. The Discover Willunga Fair will be a family fun day, with the focus squarely on all the wonderful things available in Willunga.
What I didn’t realise at the time until completing the venue application details, was that the major sponsor was Bank S.A. WBTA had only recently organised a public meeting protesting at Bank S.A.’s withdrawal from Willunga, and given my association with WBTA, I informed the Fringe contact that as a matter of principle, I couldn’t go ahead with the event as a Fringe event, but would hold the event anyway. And I explained why.
To book a stall, contact Hazel Wainwright on 0402 207 559 or David Greenslade on 0405 130 910.
The Fair will be held on Sunday 3 May 2015, from 11 am – 4 pm, at the Willunga Recreation Park.
For more information and updates about “what’s on at the fair” our website will soon be up and running and you’ll also be able to find us on Facebook.
‘We want to again to provide an opportunity for all the clubs, organisations and businesses associated

I was approached late last year to host a Fringe event at Fernies to be held in March this year (next event in fact). I agreed and the performers involved planned accordingly. For them having the Fringe organisation behind them assisted their publicity and a range of management details. It also meant a financial commitment on the part of the performers.
The upshot though meant that the performers lost all the advantages of being part of the Fringe, lost some benefit from their financial commitment and most seriously, lost the benefit of publicity
which of course translates to income. With this in mind, I approached Bendigo Bank who agreed to sponsor the event as a way of compensating the performers in a manner that a ‘not for profit’ organisation like Fernies could not do. If you are looking for somewhere to go on Friday March 13th, come to Fernies – even if its the only time you are likely to attend. Check the gig guide for details.
Letters to the Editor Thanks Helen for the wonderful article on Richard, our friendly butcher. I am sure you only covered half the story of Richard. Richard, has for the past ten plus years has directly and generously supported my group that cares for others in the wider Community. I am also aware of his generosity in supporting other groups. We are fortunate that Richard decided to set up shop in Willunga. Kind regards, Anon Hi Helen, just a quick note to let you know that reading the Willunga Gazette has become part of my monthly to do list. I really enjoy having a quiet moment with the publication and a cuppa like you’ve suggested! Well done on the improvements of the colour of the paper too (my young eyes seem to benefit from this) Cheers, Rachael

Your Community News We welcome Autumn in our gardens
Dear Editor, I am visiting Australia on the 18th April 2015 for a 5 week vacation and am desperately trying to contact an old friend whom I met over 20 years ago whilst out for lunch in a local establishment. We two strangers got talking as ladies do over a little libation and had a good laugh, we promised to keep in touch with the odd letter which we did for a number of years, I wrote to her a few years back and never got a reply which I am hoping she may have moved house and this was the reason for no reply. Her name is Rose Duff and the address I have is Willunga 5172 , If you can help I would be very grateful if not thank you for taking the time in reading my plea! Kind regards Jenny Morris,Monkton , Prestwick KA9 2RJ Are you able to help Jenny? If so, email Helen the editor: willungagazette@gm ail.com with the subject title: Jenny

March brings cooler mornings and a welcome change from the heat of summer. Now is a great time for planting some fast growing herbs in your garden. Culinary herbs such as parsley, coriander, chives, winter savory and dill will all grow well from seed sown now Don’t forget to enjoy the beautiful autumn foliage as trees start to change colour and shed their leaves. Instead of binning autumn leaves, collect and store them for your garden compost. By layering your compost bin with green materials (kitchen vegetable scraps, lawn clippings, soft prunings etc) and brown materials (autumn leaves, straws etc) you will have wonderful garden compost in no time. Adding this compost to your garden soil will ensure that it is healthy and full of life throughout the year. Please continue to send through your green thumb tips and tricks for your garden! -------
600 Sheep ready to make history at Glencoe Woolshed on Sunday 8th March Volunteer shearers prepared 600 sheep for their big day coming up at Blades of Glencoe on Sunday 8th March. They worked at Coola Station, itself an historic location near Tantanoola, to crutch the sheep ready for full shearing before the crowds expected at Glencoe. The sheep which were loaned by Coola Station to the National Trust, will be transferred on Saturday. 'Blades of Glencoe' has attracted national interest with shearers coming from 3 states. A grant of $6,600 by History SA will be dedicated to a video documentary.
Glencoe's shearing reenactment was inspired by demonstration shearer, Richie Foster while attending the woolshed's 150th birthday celebrations. He was amazed to find it still in its original 1863 condition, never converted to mechanised shearing. He put the idea to the National Trust of Mount Gambier, trustees of the woolshed, who set up a committee funded by a founding sponsorship of $5000 from Techwool. Almost 50 shearers have volunteered for the day, coming from as far away as Canberra. Viewers expecting to hear Click Click Click will be surprised at the silence of the blade shearing process. Veteran shearer Roy 'Truthful' Jones will operate the shed's 19th century

A gathering of art lovers heard inspired speeches from the arts community at the launch of the Elements of Change photographic exhibition. The organiser of the exhibition, Uniting Church minister Nick Randall led with crediting the many people that made the exhibition a reality. This was also his swan song, as he now moves on to another posting in Victoria. The gathering wished him well in his new life across the border. Nick ended his bracket with his much loved guitar and song, love transforms. Don Chapman, Onkaparinga councillor was excited by the potential of the Bethany Hall facility and the arts focus. In addition to farewelling Nick (and his loud shirts), he also introduced the focus speaker, Shelley who spoke directly of her experience with domestic violence. This relates to the central theme of the exhibition with photography from women affected by domestic violence. It was a very moving speech which got many people reflecting on all aspects of change. The exhibition features a diverse range of photographs including some atmospheric night photography and
landscape panoramas. Entry is by donation and opens throughout March and April on Saturday mornings. Bethany Hall is located on the corner of St Jude Street and St Andrew’s Terrace, Willunga.

Your Community News Recipe of the Month: Apple Pie Autumn's fruit basket is varied and delicious. Apples are at their fresh best. The harvest starts in mid to late summer with royal galas, and continues until the last sundowners are picked in May.
No one can resist a beautifully made apple pie made with succulent, sweet apples. Get your bakers hats on and tie those apron strings.. its time to bake! Ingredients: 1 3/4 cups (260g) plain flour 1/2 cup (75g) selfraising flour 185g unsalted butter, chilled, cut into small pieces 1/3 cup (75g) caster sugar 2 eggs 1 tablespoon milk Demerara or caster sugar, to sprinkle Filling 8 large Granny Smith apples Juice of 1 lemon 45g unsalted butter 1/2 cup (110g) caster sugar 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
Method: Step 1 Sift flours and a pinch of salt into a large mixing bowl. Add butter and rub lightly into flour with your fingertips. Lift mixture high above the bowl as you rub, to incorporate air into the pastry and make it lighter. Continue until mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs, then stir through sugar. Lightly beat 1 egg with 1 tablespoon chilled water, then drizzle over flour mixture. Start to bring the dough together by cutting the liquid into the dough with a blunt knife, then form into a smooth ball with your hands, adding a little more water if necessary. Divide dough into two pieces, one slightly larger than the other. Wrap in plastic wrap, and chill for 30 minutes. Step 2 To make the filling, peel and core the apples, and cut each into 8 pieces. Toss immediately with lemon juice in a large bowl, to prevent apples from discolouring. Place the butter and sugar in a large frypan over medium-low heat. When butter has melted, add apples and spices, then stir to coat. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 10 minutes or until apples have softened. Set aside to cool.
thick). Roll pastry around rolling pin, then unroll over a 22cm metal pie dish. Gently press into corners and allow excess to overhang. Place filling in base with a slotted spoon. Roll the small pastry piece to a 25cm circle. Beat remaining egg with milk, brushing some on rim of the base. Top with small pastry. Step 4 Lift the pie dish and cut excess pastry from edges with a sharp knife. Crimp edges of pastry together with your fingers. Chill for 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 180째C, place pie dish on a baking tray. Brush top of pie with more beaten egg, sprinkle with demerara or caster sugar. Cut four small air vents in the centre of the pie and bake for 45 minutes or until golden brown.
Did you know? Apple Facts: *More than 2,500 varieties of apples are grown in the United States, but only the crabapple is native to North America. *Apples contain no fat, sodium or cholesterol and are a good source of fiber. *Apple trees take four to five years to produce their first fruit. *Apples ripen six to 10 times faster at room temperature than if they are refrigerated. *Apples are a member of the rose family. *It takes about 36 apples to create one gallon of apple cider.
