Local Business Profile: Willunga Quality Meats Willunga Quality Meats is located in the heart of the Willunga High Street. Owner, Richard Brown has been a butcher for over 41 years and his passion for great quality meats is as fresh as the day he set foot into his first role as a butcher. Richard and his team strive to deliver fresh, locally sourced meats and other produce for all our dining needs. His lambs roam free on green pastures on his property in the Fleurieu and other meats are sourced from other local farmers that grass feed their animals. Whilst Richard sources what he doesn't have on his property from other farmers, we can rest assured knowing that most of them come from certified organic farms in the Fleurieu that treat their animals much like Richard. “Grass fed animals versus grain fed animals is a huge difference, and I believe that the quality my customers receive and enjoy is a result of this” says Richard. Branch Manager, Annette Seeliger reports very positive receptions from customer interviews and her staff have been actively distributing brochures to spread the word. Leaving school at 14, Richard went to work on a poultry farm where his natural talent for butchery first began. By the age of 19, he found himself working for a butcher that handed him some firm words "Go and get a haircut and then go and see my son in Woodside as he has an apprenticeship available and you would be perfect for it" Questioning the haircut, Richard did as he was told and found himself working at Woodside Butchers, then onto Hahndorf and Meadows Butcher where he learnt about small goods. By the age of 30 McLaren Vale Butchers became the place where Richard took his skills and experience and made small goods, hams, bacons and all other types of sumptuous cuts. It was very apparent that Richard had all the experience and skills and personality needed to sustain a customer base and produce quality meats for all his customers. Being a butcher that held so qualities had him approached by a fellow colleague wanting to open up their own business. After much thought and deliberation, Richard agreed that this would be his next step. Willunga Quality Meats was born, however after 18 months of working together Richards business partner wanted to travel the word to other pastures (no pun intended). Becoming the
soul owner of Willunga Quality Meats has been a very enjoyable experience which is driven by passion and commitment to our community for over 23 years. Boasting quality, paired with great service and affordable goods this small business has become a household name for the residents of Willunga and beyond. Cutting out the middle man is the reason we all get to enjoy amazing prices for great, clean and locally sourced meats. Pop in and say hi to Richard and his team, you will always be greeted with a huge smile, warmth and even a great story if you’re lucky.
Do you know this WW1 soldier?
The Unidentified Soldier Work is underway to restore the Collage of 65 local Willunga Soldiers who served in WW1. There is only 1 soldier we cannot identify. It is planned to have the restoration completed by Anzac Day this year.

Zucchinis happily growing in my garden As you can see, my resolution is being kept. I have been spending some of my “free time” in my veggie garden and am reaping the benefits of home grown fruits and vegetables. With the established trees I have in my yard I made 15 jars worth of Apricot jam a few weeks ago which was delicious!
Willunga Rec Park News The committee is looking to renovate the toilet/Shower facility in the festival Hall. A complete refit is desired and it is hoped to seek a grant to provide a much improved facility! Stay tuned for further news regarding the re-vamp.
A huge thank you to everyone who wrote in with their tips and tricks for tackling my summer crop. I have been overloaded with gorgeous zucchinis in my garden and have had to find some creative ways to use it in our everyday meals. I have included zucchini in this month’s recipe page for you all to enjoy. If you have any more suggestions in keeping my thumb green with any tips and tricks, please email me your wisdom.

Your Community News McLaren Vale “Painting with Light Festival” 2015 The McLaren Vale Business Association is planning to stage a “Painting with Light Festival” throughout McLaren Vale for Christmastime 2015.
In preparation of the 2015 Festival, the Association is inviting interested people of all ages, creative talents, or just people out of the community who like to do some painting as a hobby, to produce a painting or paintings using fluro paints. Under the direction of the McLaren Vale Business Association a major Christmastime community Festival will be launched and organised in McLaren Vale for the 2015 Christmas season. The McLaren Vale Business Association would like to invite people young and older to use their talents to produce some paintings or just one painting based on a Christmassy theme, which is painted using fluro paints. To make it also possible for people to take part outside the region, an A3 size is suggested for all fluro paintings, for easy posting to the McLaren Vale Business Association. As preparation for the event by participants may take some time, we decided to launch the event and to start inviting people to participate from now onwards.
For individuals, organisations and schools who are interested please apply for an entry form or further information by contacting the McLaren Vale Business Association by Email: info@mclarenvalebusin ess.com.au or by Post: PO Box 659 McLaren Vale SA 5171.

The Green Light Eco Market, on February 7, will be hosting this year’s annual “Bicycle and Recreational Equipment Share” A Community Share such as this is where you donate obsolete/surplus items and get to select from those donated by others. There is no money or bartering, just giving and receiving. If you have nothing to donate on the day, you can bring something another day or find another way to contribute to your local community. You may already be doing this. Community Shares reduce waste & consumption, are information exchanges & meeting points, & reduce our reliance on money. The Green Light Eco Market is now the home of Community Share in Willunga and at the “Bicycle and Recreational Equipment Share” there will not only be bicycles for
children and adults but other types of recreational equipment such as trikes, scooters, skate boards, roller skates, inline skates, bats, balls, rackets, fitness gear, weight training gear, kayaks, canoes, wet suits, surf & boogie boards, snorkels & fins etc etc etc. It all depends on what people decide to bring. Graham Hancox, veteran of the last two Simpson Desert Bicycle Races will be on board to help you choose your bike. Share equipment can be dropped off between 5 and 8pm at the market site (corner of Main and Aldinga Rds) on Friday February 6 or delivered on the day. The Green Light Market will also be hosting its regular Backyard Produce Share. Here you can find or donate the likes of home grown, chemical free fruit, vegetables, herbs, flowers, seedlings, seeds, pot plants and preserves. Because of the heat, this stall closes at 10.30 so get in early. The Market also boasts an increasing range of
stalls including Bio Char, Gemtree - bio-dynamic wine, Hemp Hemp Hooray - hemp skin care, The Contented Kettle – keifer, almond milk and dumplings, Kismet Kitchen – gluten free bread, sweet & savoury morsels, Kiosk iced coconut chocolate & “best brownies ever”, Starlight Springs – heritage vegetables, Sellicks Farm – fruit, veggies & plants, Stickman- organic cotton t-shirts, Organic Coffee, Tango turtle – hot breakfast, Scott’s hand-made moccasins, Original Green Company – Compost, Marty Vaher & Steve Pool permaculture counselling, just to name a few. There is face painting for the kids and from this market onwards, a full program of buskers. For more details check out: www.greenlightecomar ket.com

Your Community News SANTOS /BIKE EXCHANGE STAGE 5 TOUR DOWN UNDER in WILLUNGA This is a huge day for Willunga. The town and its surrounds are seen by millions around the world. I’m not sure what sort of value you place on that sort of exposure and how you measure it, but it’s there and it happens. Lachlan, a semi professional rider who was at the Pelaton Picnic with thirty seven other club mates from Perth, was telling me that on a recent trip to France to follow the Tour De France, when hearing that he was from Australia, locals would say to him such things as “ Willunga.. Willunga Hill..we know all about your bike race..” I would like to thank the WBTA committee for continuing to take on this mammoth task of presenting Willunga in a positive light, and to those members of the Willunga community – the traders and the private residents – who make the effort to help create the festive atmosphere. In particular I would like to acknowledge the work done by the team coordinator Tom Laing, the decorations coordinator Angela Lisman who adopted the theme of ‘Stage 5 – an international event’ and the Pelaton Picnic coordinator, Ben Barber. Behind the coordinators and their families were a small group of hard working volunteers without whom the set up and pull down work
could not have been completed in time. A special thank you to Steve at the Caltex servo who donated the use of a trailer over four days (especially in light of the negative effect on his business over the Stage 5 period); the CWA and the RSL for the use of their clubrooms as work and storage places, and of course the Willunga branch of the National Trust and as always the generosity and goodwill as exemplified by Donald McDonald in helping to make the Pelaton Picnic the success it has been. The Pelaton Picnic attracted swarms of race fans – at times peaking at what must have been in excess of five hundred spectators. Formal feedback has been very positive.
in with the Willunga Farmers’ Market’s Twilight event, saw the market absolutely packed with happy shoppers and High St abuzz with busy traders and lively music from some outstanding local talent. Essentially set up in order to provide the stall holders with an opportunity to sell their wares given that the market does not operate on the Saturday of the TDU, it would have to be considered an outstanding success. So congratulations to the market organisers. And to Ben Barber who never wavered from a belief that this could be done in Willunga, congratulations, not only on behalf of the WBTA but the community in general.
Congratulations too to those committee members who supported Ben and others with colourful decorations – from the Rec Park to some way up High St. Dave Greenslade Chair WBTA -------

This brief report cannot be complete without acknowledging the magnificent figurines created by Brian Reader several years ago for an international event held in Willunga. The figurines have been stored since then by WBTA and reappeared last year at the Willunga 175 ‘Hit the Hill’ event, and once again brought out for an airing along High St and Main Rd for this tour event. They are a wonderful gift for this town.

KATELYNN CLICKS WITH HISTORY
fearless, strong and very much her own woman.
Controlling sheep that weigh more than she does, while keeping one hand free for shearing, is just a day's work for Katelynn Clark, shearer and kelpie breeder.
The Glencoe Woolshed is fully intact, just as it was built in 1863, the era of Click Go the Shears. Proving how important the wool industry was to Australia, just 75 years after the first fleet, the woolshed is cathedral sized, with 36 shearing stations, capable of handling 80,000 sheep a year. As it was never converted to mechanized shearing, the Glencoe Woolshed is thought to be unique in the world. The National Trust of South Australia will open the field day from 9 am to 4 pm on Sunday 8th March at the Glencoe Woolshed, about 30 k's north west of Mount Gambier. Food, produce, crafts, music and souvenirs will make it a great day in the country.. Tickets at the gate, adults $12, family $25.
Along with 40 other shearers, Katelynn will be a star demonstrator at the 'Blades of Glencoe' field day in the historic Glencoe woolshed, near Mount Gambier. Katelynn divides her time between breeding professional kelpie working dogs and following the shearing circuit all over southeastern Australia. 'Our dogs are born and trained to boost productivity on sheep stations but have a calm and well mannered temperament,' Katelynn says. 'so they are great company for their owners, young kids and the elderly.' In an industry that intimidates most men with its physical demands, Katelynn is a petite powerhouse,
