WILLUNGA 175 FINALE The Willunga175 committee hopes that you’ve enjoyed the events we’ve organised this year to celebrate the 175th anniversary of the establishment of our special town. We’ve highlighted “our” Old Willunga Hill; we’ve reconnected with the traditional owners of the land; we’ve displayed and shared the food, the music, the history and the unique community spirit that are such important aspects of the character of Willunga. To draw the celebrations to a close, there will be one final event – a casual community get-together at the Old Courthouse on Wednesday 31 December, from 11 am – 3 pm. Drop by to share a free sausage sizzle and to see the unveiling of two commemorative plaques – one that replaces the stolen 150th anniversary plate and a second that celebrates the 175th anniversary of European settlement in Willunga. Bring your own drinks, rugs and chairs. All are welcome. The way local businesses, organisations and residents have supported the year’s events has been outstanding, and the Willunga175 committee wishes to thank everyone who has been involved in any way. It has made all the planning and hard work feel very worthwhile. -------

2015 will be another exciting year for celebrations in Willunga. It will be 100 years following many years of planning, lobbying and debate since the railway was finally officially opened on January 20th 1915. The first train departed with 500 schoolchildren on board to journey to Brighton and return, stopping to pick up children along the way.
This is a reflection of the community support for the market which has enabled us to continue to expand, so THANK YOU WILLUNGA. It is a pleasure to see you each month. -------

NEWS and FEATURES At a meeting held recently 20 interested people have formed an action group to develop the railway precinct on Aldinga Road with interpretive signage and the reinstatement of the heritage infrastructure items, and to plan celebrations of this milestone. To mark the date of the official opening and as there isn't a train in Willunga now, it is proposed that on the morning of the 20th January 2015 to ring the Church bells and have train whistles and steam train sounds broadcast from buildings in the centre of town. Following on from this residents and friends are invited to bring their picnic lunch to the Railway Precinct lawns on Aldinga Road.
Further events during the year are also planned such as displays of historic material, photos, model trains and a fair day. During History Month in May the theme of Transport will be featured when it is planned to hold a parade of animals and vehicles relating to early transport. Possible entrants will range from a bullock team, draught horses, carts and wagons to vintage cars and buses. The next planning meeting will be held on: Friday 19th December at 10-00a.m. The Hub Willunga If you are interested in becoming involved. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Hi, I would like to Thank You!!! very much for publishing the notice of our first fundraising event/concert held at Mt Compass on Sept 20th in the Willunga Gazette. The event was a great success with 142 folks showing up, eating, drinking and dancing the night away. We raised a substantial amount of money for our non-profit organization from the sale of food, wine, beer and through our auctions. It was a very lively, musical, fun and social evening. Your support of our fledgling community organization is much appreciated. Thanks again, Kind regards, Tess -----Hi Tom, This is not a STARS note, it is simply from me as a letter to the Editor, or an example of the wonderful place in which we are fortunate to live, if you like. I live in Aubrey Drive and on October 31st, committed the unpardonable sin of forgetting it was Halloween and that I would require treats to be available! As I drove into my house at 6pm, I saw all the children in the street gathering to go out for their “Trick or Treat” night and called out to my neighbors to apologize that I would not make a lucrative stop on their journey. One beautiful young man came over and gave me a hug and told me not to worry….. So the evening went by and about 9 groups of well-behaved and
supervised children and teenagers came to the door, in each case I apologized that I had forgotten and no matter the age group (some great costumes I might add) they were kind and polite and told me not to be concerned but to have a good night. My last group was 4 young children (with Mum at the end of the driveway) in beautiful costumes – once again I explained how awful I felt that I had no treats and one of the boys in the group, held his hand up to me for a moment and asked me to wait……ran off back down the driveway, spoke with his Mum, got something from her and ran back…to present me with two lollipops, “so I would feel better” I need to say that I live in the most amazing place and also that our world is in good hands with beautiful children like this in it Elizabeth Elizabeth Boydell Customer Consultant PRISM Office: 0410 614411 ------

With Australia estimated to spend around 28 billion dollars alone on Christmas, and the planet disappearing under mountains of man-made waste, 2.6 trillion pounds a year – the weight of 7000 Empire State Buildings, let’s give Earth a Christmas present with just a little less rubbish and let’s take some of the stress off our Christmas budget.

The Green Light Eco Market is the natural extension of the hugely successful Green Light Festival with stalls offering a variety of organic food and other products designed to help us live more lightly on Earth. Market organizers are keen to hear from buskers interested in performing on the day and there will also be a novelty fashion parade at 10am with local identities strutting their stuff in only the best apparel from the Clothing Share. Community Notices Whitefeather Red Takes Flight (extract from WBM March 2012 Just when I thought I’d met every character there was to meet in the Australian wine community, a tall, longhaired man in a black shirt and white stockman’s hat shakes my hand and welcomes me to his corner of the world – Saunders Springs Vineyard on the southern edge of McLaren Vale. Being an admirer of life’s little things I smile at the chalk message on the blackboard “Welcome Anthony’. That’s a first for me. As it turns out the first of many firsts today as John takes me on a grand rour of his property.
Glancing at the rustic gardens with the recycled pavers, old jetty pylons, drystone walls and chunky redgum tables and chairs, I’m guessing John’s motto is ‘waste not, want not’. His home has been built out of recycled timbers from Port Adelaide, Brighton, Port Noarlunga and Cape Jervis jetties, while off cuts from the old Southport Bridge were used to build the cellar door. The oceanic/ musical theme sees all sorts of memorabilia decorating the yard: saxophones, fishing rods, life buoys, bird statues, old ladders and century-old tlegraph poles. On the day of my visit the pizzas are in the wood-fired oven and a Willunga muso is entertaining guests on a
stage built from the old Cape Jervis Wharf. Titan the maremma crossretriever asleeep at his feet. Dr Harry would have a field day here. What’s with the white doves? “We breed them” says John, cigarette in mouth. “They bring the hawks in and keep the vermin and starlings out of the vineyard-something like a bird for a bird , against a bird, and so we don’t have to net the vineyard. And it works.” The ducks? “They clean up the snails and slaters.” He says. The geese? They graze over the weeds and cover crop of the vineyard like a brushcutter and come waddling fertiliser. We have about 70 geese and they do a good job.” Umm, there’s human hair in buckets. “Not many people know this,” says John, a one-time professional photographer and surfing instructor, “but the smell of human hair keeps foxes away from the ducks and geese at night. We get the hair from local salons. There’s a million things we’ve done here that actually work, but a lot of people don’t know about this stuff.” John is a bit of a journeyman. As a young lad he went around Australia surfing “Until the government got their computers together,” he laughs. They suddenly realised that all I’d been doing was surfing around Australia. They gave me a job with the Education Department teaching surfing.” He gave that away about five years ago – “the water was getting too wet” – and he is now fully focussed on making Saunders Springs Vineyard a successful wine business. 9.30 pm With questions to follow Costs: $ 12 (incl. cuppa & bikkie) ------After hearing the Christmas story, and singing "Silent Night" a Sunday School Class was asked to draw what they thought the Nativity Scene might have looked like. One boy did a good likeness of Joseph, Mary, and the infant Jesus, but off to the side was a rolypoly figure. The teacher, afraid that he had somehow worked Santa Claus into the scene, asked him who that was. She wasn't sure whether she was relieved or even more worried when the boy replied, "Oh, that's Round John Virgin." ------Are you missing out?
