DISCOVER WILLUNGA FAIR – 4 MAY 2014 The next big Willunga175 event is the Discover Willunga Fair, which will be held at the Willunga Recreation Park on Sunday 4 May 10 am – 4 pm. If you ever wondered what you could do in Willunga, this day will be your chance to find out! “This event provides all the clubs, organisations, groups and businesses associated with Willunga the opportunity to showcase their wares and specialities,” said Willunga175 Chairman, Graham Ormsby. “So far, we’ve had a great response from a wide range of sports clubs and other interest groups, but we have room for plenty more.” Residents are also invited to show off their hobbies and collections. Anyone who as something they would like to display as part of this exhibition should contact Graham Ormsby on 0402 892 425. Stalls are free for community and not-for-profit groups, with a small charge of $50 for businesses. Both indoor and outdoor sites are available. Pumpkin Competition A feature of the fair is the pumpkin growing competition, which has been under way for quite a while, with over 40 residents having purchased seeds. If you’re wondering what to do with your “small” pumpkins, think about entering them in the Pumpkin Decoration and Pumpkin Scone competitions. Contact Sue at Willunga Physiotherapy and Pilates (8556 4416) in High Street for more details. Keen gardeners are encouraged to enter into the rose competition. Prizes will be awarded for the best single bloom and best display. More details about how to enter will be posted on the website. Historical Dress Competition As we are celebrating 175 years of history, the committee would like visitors to dress in period costume and take part in a parade on the oval. Prizes will be awarded to the best-dressed. Fun and Games for All Local dance and yoga groups will perform in the Show Hall, and historical games, such as a tug-of-war, an almond-cracking competition and sack races, will take place on the oval. Food and drinks will be available throughout the day, and a bouncy castle and merry-go-round will provide even more fun for children. Would you like to help at the fair? We need assistance with the organisation of the Rose competition, the Almond Cracking competition, organising the games and marshalling of stalls and other events. If you are interested please contact Graham Ormsby on 0402 892 425.
Lorraine Poole, owner, Fern Forest Nursery presenting three palms to Mos Hancock
The Willunga Soldiers Memorial sits at the front of the Willunga RSL on Main Road & is a site dedicated to our local returned Men & Women who have served in Wars over the last 100 years. This site is an extremely important memorial to many of our local citizens, who have relations mentioned on the plaques covering several world wars. Those service men & women who are mentioned served their country to keep us & our children free from servitude, barbarism, & in many cases paid the supreme sacrifice. WE WILL REMEMBER THEM. Lorraine Poole, on presenting three palms to Mos Hancock said, “I heard about vandals stealing the plants out of the barrels in January when we were using the RSL/CWA for balloon filling for TDU. I was aghast and cross at such senseless destruction, and decided to donate some beautiful Chinese Fan palms to replace the stolen plants. These palms have nasty spines on the stems which should deter would be thieves in the future!” The WILLUNGA & DISTRICTS RSL on behalf of its committee & members would like to advise ANY OTHER PARTYS CONCERNED that this memorial has NO relevance to any illegal immigrant no matter what their circumstances may be & no matter how sorry we may feel, the President Mos Hancock OAM said today. Our members & committee are extremely upset that our reverent site has been hijacked for another cause. Please be advised that the Dawn Service will be held at the memorial, 6.15am on ANZAC DAY, followed by a gunfire breakfast & tea & coffee. M W Hancock ------The Charity Shoe Shine conducted by the Willunga Circle of Friends resumes on Saturday 26th April 2014. The "grumpy old man" and his assistant polisher over the past 9 years have raised hundreds of dollars to support the Barefoot Iniatiative and of more recent times refugees living in the Community.
