NEWS Cinemallunga This Saturday Nov 30th 7.00pm Hi everyone, Just a short reminder to ask you to come out in support of the good people of the Black Cockatoo Arthouse in McLaren Vale.
As many of you may know, the Arthouse has been devastated by fire. Greg and Sarah have lost an extraordinary amount, not just irreplaceable items, artwork, equipment, stock, and collectables, but years of hard work, sweat, tears, and love. On Saturday Nov. 30, we are screening the Academy Award-winning classic, "Cinema Paradiso," and will be donating all proceeds towards the Black Cockatoo Arthouse Fire Fund. "Cinema Paradiso" is a delightful tale of a boy's love of cinema and his relationship with his mentor, the projectionist. There are some saucy bits depicted as the boys hits his teens - the film is Rated M and is recommended for a Mature audience. And, of course, we will have all the usual extras - live music, food, licensed bar, raffle and door prizes, and intermission shenanigans!loads of great prizes to win!

LETS is a community barter system operating around the world. Members pay $25 per year to enable them to trade with many other local members for skills, services or products. If you trade your skills or a product to another member you get a credit amount and then you can buy services or products that you need from an extensive resource list that can be found on-line or is distributed to members quarterly. You can even incur a debit up to a certain amount. Now, the new on-line registration system, using the name Fleurieu LETS S.A. means you always have clear and accurate records of trading and you can receive instant offers and wants from anywhere in the world.
months to make the switch and start experiencing the benefits of very fast broadband now.
“It‟s important to make the switch as these existing services will no longer work after May next year.
Nearly 70% of Willunga premises have made the switch, NBN Co is urging the remaining premises to follow their lead.
“Even residents who don‟t use the internet will still need to switch to the NBN if they want to keep using their home phone.
“To avoid getting stuck in the last minute rush, which could mean you end up not having your home phone and internet services working, we‟d encourage you to make the switch today,” NBN Co spokesperson Lalla Mackenzie said today.
“This includes community members with special equipment, such as medical and security alarms which are connected to the home phone line.
Home and business owners who live or work in and around Victor Harbour Road, Ridge Street, Kookaburra Court and Gaffney Road (see below map) have just over six months until NBN‟s new infrastructure will replace the existing landline phone, ADSL internet and Telstra cable internet services when these services are switched off on the 23 May 2014.
“All you need to do is get in contact with your preferred phone or internet company,” Ms Mackenzie said.
The services and products you can buy or offer to sell are extensive. They range from gardening, carpentry, art & craft, seedlings, veggies, plumbing, computer repairs, child minding, therapeutic services, naturopathy, sewing, web design, massage, house cleaning, wine, home maintenance, gluten free products, music cd‟s and many more. You can even trade for a holiday home in Tassie. Sign up through www.communityexchange.net .au or contact the Secretary, Will Heidt 0414 484 723 -------

Less cars, more community, café tables and office chairs In the last edition, my article about a Willunga Car Co-op, asked three questions: 1. Had anyone been part of a car co-op? 2. Does anyone have information about car co-ops? 3. Was anyone interested in forming a car co-op? I received no positive responses to any of these questions, but what I did receive was a number of
people who were willing to loan me their car as required. To these wonderful people I say thank you and will no doubt take them up on their offer as appropriate. What this indicates to me however is that there are folk out there with time that their cars are not being used but who have a general wariness relating to involvement in a formalised co-op. Some comments in particular indicated an inability to see how they could go without owning their own car or cars. For this reason I have decided to share some of my experiences not owning a car and living in Willunga, in the hope that others may choose to join me, or at least, see the car issue in a different light. Two weeks ago I wanted to take 5 boxes of Get Up Climate Change fliers to the city to be distributed prior to the big rally. I was hoping to do this on Wednesday, so, on Monday I started calling my friends who I thought might work in the city and be able to give me a lift. I would then bus home flier free. I found someone without too much difficulty. When they dropped me off they offered to repeat the service as required saying that it was really nice having someone to talk to for the hour drive. There were however two folk who will remain nameless, who were not home when I rang, but who returned my call the following week. Both would have been able to help with a lift if they had checked their messages sooner. I learnt from this to be more prepared and consequently booked someone else‟s car two weeks in advance to take to the Climate Change Rally on Sunday. In return for the use of this car I replaced petrol used and did an hour of gardening for the owner. I think it is important to pay for the use of someone‟s car given that they are without it for that period of time, and there is always the associated wear and tear.
Wilson‟s Organics) and 10 comfortable office style chairs (from the also defunct local ANZ bank) that were still on site. There didn‟t seem to be a plan for this equipment. Later that day I received a call from the Rec Park suggested it would be good to remove these because there would be tree loping in the area the next day. I agreed to do so. What was I thinking? My trailer was on loan, I had no car and it was blowing a gale. Anyway, I wandered up the hill (anywhere outside will feel like a hill on that Tuesday) with sac truck in tow to see what I could do. I loaded up with one table and started for home, but as I walked, I can remember thinking “I wonder who‟s going to give me a hand here?” About half way home Damon and Lucinda Moon did just that. They pulled up in a ute and took the first table home for me. They also gave me some rope to tie future tables to my sac truck. So, back for the second table. This time Marty Vaher appeared with his one tonner and offered to bring all the furniture to my place. They are all still here, and available for community functions so just ask. This last story reinforces three things for me: 1. What a wonderful community Willunga is. 2. When I act in service, others join me. 3. Not having a car allows me to experience more of 1. & 2. If you want to talk less cars jeffsimmons@iprimus.co m.au 85289113 -------

Mahboba's Promise Hello again Willunga Community and everyone else who reads our Gazette. Thank you for the interest Mahboba's Promise received from last month. I am so well aware of the generosity of our Australian people to so many well worth while humanitarian causes yet I would again like to bring Mahboba's Promise to your attention: John and I met Mahboba Rawi in Sydney recently. She is an Australian Afghani woman who, after the tragic drowning of her 6 year old son in 1994, made a promise to the Afghan orphans on the streets, to educate, feed, clothe and accommodate as many as she could. Her non-profit organization works in Afghanistan bringing hope to hundreds of orphans and widows whose lives have been ravaged by years of war.
Please visit the website to find out more about the work and how your support would make a difference to so many people's lives. www.mahbobaspromise.org At present there is another beautiful Home and School in isolated Tashakar ready to support and educate girls and boys. The financial requirement is $10,000 per month. I was hoping to find at least 100 local people to commit to $5, $10 or whatever per month to assist with this. There is also opportunity for local schools, classes, children to connect with school children already in education in this wonderful organisation. At present, the Hon. Quenton Bryce, Governor General of Australia is the Patron. As there are only three partly paid employees, with all other fund raising etc carried out by volunteers almost 100% of money goes directly to the Projects. Donations of $2 and over are tax-deductible. We are hoping to bring Mahboba to Adelaide/Willunga in the new year. Margaret Bennett johnmarg_bennett@bigpond. com Phone: 8556 7288 -------

NEWS WILLUNGA HILL TRIALS "SMART" road barriers that can alert emergency services when there is a crash are being trialled on one of the state's most notorious roads. The wire rope technology, designed in South Australia, is expected to improve crash response times by sending an electronic message direct to the city's traffic management centre when a vehicle crashes into the barrier. The centre can immediately notify police and ambulance crews. The technology has been installed on Victor Harbor Rd at Willunga Hill and will be trialled for a year at a cost of $120,000. The system is being tested and will be officially switched on later this month. If successful, the government will consider rolling the technology out across the state. The Transport Department has applied to patent the "world-first" technology. "The rope will detect when a vehicle has crashed into it, triggering an electronic alert to be sent to the Traffic
Management Centre at Norwood," Road Safety minister Michael O'Brien said. "By knowing when a vehicle has hit the barrier, the centre can immediately alert emergency services. "This will help to improve response times to crashes, rather than waiting for the police, the public or someone involved in a crash to report the accident." The technology also allows technicians to monitor the tension of the wires. "If there is a loosening or an impact to the wire ropes, the traffic management centre is alerted and are able to dispatch a work crew to fix the barrier if required," Mr O'Brien said. -------

The Willunga Lions Ladies Boutique was named the 2013 Every Generation Onkaparinga Group Community Award winner on October 30. In the past year, about $52,000 in cash has been given back to the community, including paying for CPR first aid courses for Willunga High School students.
"American archaeologists, finding traces of 250-year-old copper wire, have concluded that their ancestors already had an advanced high-tech communications network 50 years earlier than the British". One week later, Australia's Northern Territory Times reported the following: "After digging as deep as 30 feet in his backyard in Tennant Creek, Northern Territory, Knackers Johnson, a self-taught archaeologist, reported that he found absolutely bugger-all. Knackers has therefore concluded that 250 years ago, Australia had already gone wireless." ...Makes ya feel bloody proud to be an Australian! -------

Willunga Primary School News Dear Parents and Caregivers, SAPSASA (South Australian Primary Schools Amateur Sports Association). In Years 5, 6 and 7 but usually in Year 6 and 7 students have the opportunity to represent their school in a wide range of sports from swimming to golf to rugby to soccer. Schools make decisions as to which sports they will participate in. Individual students can participate in SASPSASA carnivals, events and competitions through nomination by their local club too. At Willunga we organise for students to participate in athletics, swimming, football, soccer, cross country, cricket, tennis, netball, basketball, rugby tag, rugby league and rugby tackle.
• Volleyball 2013 Winner Fleurieu Cup both Boys and Girls. • Football State Champions Girls 4 times in past 10 years. Boys state semifinalist this year. • Athletics-District Athletics champions 2013 • Swimming- District Champions 2012 • Croquet- State champions 2009 2010 While our successes and participation are to be commended, it is what SAPSASA brings to students that are just as, if not more, important than winning. For students nvolved it facilitates opportunities for them to develop their identity within Willunga Primary School. They develop a positive self image of themselves as a person, become engaged in school life in a meaningful way and establish strong relationships with Mr Crate, school staff, SAPSAASA coaches and teammates and usually achieve a reasonable amount of success. These elements – Positive
Emotions (feeling good about yourself and things in general), Being Engaged in a Meaningful way, having strong Relationships with others and Achieving success - are the key ingredients of the Positive Psychology framework / movement. Yes the sporting opportunities that SAPSASA brings to our school are wonderful, but so too are the positive psychological spin offs that they bring too. Mick UNDERWOOD Principal -------

This year we have had 5 students Jayden, Seth, Jessica, Sarah and Erin be selected in state teams to participate in Australian championships. Many of our students have been selected to participate in district teams playing against other district teams in State carnivals. Our team results this year have been just as spectacular successfully competing against bigger primary schools and private schools alike. • Rugby Union Boys - State Champions 2011 and 2012 • Rugby League Tackle Boys 2013 State champions • Rugby League Tag State Champions Boys 2006 2007 2010 2011 2012. "Please, Dad," pleaded the boy, "I promise I'll use 'em every day." "I don't know, Michael. It's really a commitment on your part," the father pointed out. "Please, Dad?" the boy continued. "They're not cheap either," the father came back. "I'll use 'em Dad, I promise. You'll see." Finally won over, the father paid for the equipment and headed for the door. From the corner of the store he heard his son yelp, "What! You mean I have to carry them to the car?" --------

COMMUNITY NOTICES There’s a new class in town and it’s called “Thrive Time” In Thrive Time, we get to know ourselves better, connect with others, practice skills that facilitate personal growth and it‟s a real “hoot”. Knowing ourselves better At the Green Light Festival in Willunga on the weekend, I listened to Tresh Pearce speak about country. It‟s not just the land and the plants and the animals and the people, it‟s all their stories, all their connections, it‟s everything. Tresh then went on to chant the Tibetan “May all beings be happy” What an absolute legend! I believe in everybody‟s heart, there is a connection to country, a connection to all beings, including self, and I believe that it is through these connections that we experience the meaning of our lives. Unfortunately however it‟s easy to lose track of this and get caught up in the competition, growth and
instant gratification fixations of modern consumerist society. Thrive Time gives us the opportunity to disempower these fixations and to reconnect with ourselves and others. We do this through activities that get us connecting with each other physically, creatively and emotionally (laughter and other positive feelings associated with group challenges and novelty games). Throughout Thrive Time there are reflection, meditation and sharing opportunities where those aspects of the evenings work (play) that impact most on us can be processed consciously and or unconsciously, or left to develop further over time. Interpersonal skills Many of the skills that assist journeys of interpersonal development can be found in improvisation training. With improvisation you make up stories and act them out with no previous discussion. Isn‟t this what happens with life?
There are no dress rehearsals. With improvisation there are guiding principles that you follow to ensure that the stories you create make sense, have characters that are changed by their experiences, have a positive impact on both audience and performer and reach an appropriate conclusion. I‟m not sure about you, but I want my life to make sense (to me at least). I want to continually develop (or else what‟s the point?). I want to positively affect those around me and yes, an appropriate conclusion would be nice. The guiding principles that support this happening in improvisation and that Thrive Time incorporates till they become automatic in our lives include:
Accepting and empowering the ideas of others Being in the moment Really listening to others Asking for & accepting help Trying the untried
Thrive Time also incorporates many group initiative
challenges to develop our skills in: Collaborating creatively Developing win win solutions Developing creative and outside the box solutions Questioning purposes, rules and perspectives Performing a variety of different group roles It has to be fun I have been a school camp and vacation care worker, an improvisation trainer, a Life Be In It Games Leader and a performing clown. What do you expect? Unbridled frivolity. There will be frivolity with intention. There will be games, imaginings and perhaps the odd song, dress up and dance move. Don‟t be deterred. I have no actual singing or dancing skills, and this is really the whole point of the exercise. It‟s about energy, commitment and just having a ball. 200 volunteers urgently needed! Trees For Life is urgently looking for 200 more volunteers in South Australia to grow native seedlings this summer.
Willunga Trees for Life Trees for Life will meet at 7.30pm on Wed 4th
Each year about 1000 volunteers raise hundreds of thousands of seedlings in a bid to help continue to revegetate SA and we hope to reach this important target with the community‟s help.
Through the award-winning Tree Scheme, volunteers are asked to grow and care for the seedlings for landholders and revegetation projects in South Australia. The Tree Scheme operates by annual seedling orders being taken for landholders, councils, government projects and private enterprise, with Trees For Life then linking up orders with volunteer growers. Trees For Life provides all the propagation materials – seed varieties, tubes, boxes, soil and mulch – free to volunteers, along with easyto-follow instructions. The materials can be collected at a local distribution depot in your region in midNovember. Once sown and raised, seedlings are handed over for planting about six months later. The seedlings provide food and habitat for our native wildlife, help counteract some of South Australia‟s Greenhouse gas emissions and help rehabilitate land that has been degraded. Those interested in volunteering don‟t need to have a green thumb – it‟s a perfect way for people to do something positive to help our environment, it‟s free and it‟s a feel-good experience! If you can help, please phone the office on (08) 8406 0500 or log onto the Trees For Life website: www.treesforlife.org.au -------
Irish Sugar Test One day an Irishman goes into a pharmacy - reaches into his pocket and takes out a small Irish whiskey bottle and a teaspoon. He pours from the bottle onto the teaspoon and offers it to the chemist. "Could you taste this for me, please?" The chemist takes the teaspoon, puts it in his mouth, swills the liquid around and swallows it.
"No, not at all," says the chemist. "Oh that's a relief," says Paddy "The doctor told me to come here and get my urine tested for sugar." -------
Fox Creek Cellar Door Gallery | December 2013 & January 2014 Durre‟s work is inspired by Pakistani “Truck Art”. The practice of which dates back to 1920 when public transport became a highly significant part of urban culture in the sub-continent; it continues to be an integral part of Pakistani transport & culture. Using beaten stainless steel and „chamak patty‟, a highly durable fluorescent tape, Durre creates colourful and incredibly detailed pieces including mirror frames, coasters, ornamental boxes and mobiles. Durre has a professional background in architecture and design and has maintained a passion for creativity since her childhood. She describes the ability to bring truck art into everyday products as a gift from the Gods. “Truck art embodies all the richness and generosity of our land; it‟s next to cricket in Pakistan which is pursued with a passion and zeal matched only by our music, poetry and hospitality!” “What I try to do with each piece is to bring together the complete array of motifs that are spread over the canvas of the truck. The more you look, the more the eye discovers and savours; the detail is beautiful. It is an on-going journey throughout which one keeps coming back and rediscovering the power and the creativity in each swirl and dot.” Durre hopes that this exhibition of Rangdey products will light the fire of everyone‟s imagination… For more information : 8557 0000

ON FRIDAYS, I FISH!!!! After 35 years of marriage, a husband and wife came for counseling. When asked what the problem was, the wife went into a tirade listing every problem they had ever had in the years they had been married. On and on and on: neglect, lack of intimacy, emptiness, loneliness, feeling unloved and unlovable, an entire laundry list of unmet needs she had endured.
Wishing all our customers and supporters a very Merry Christmas and a safe, prosperous and Happy New Year

Finally, after allowing this for a sufficient length of time, the therapist got up, walked around the desk and after asking the wife to stand, he embraced and kissed her long and passionately as her husband watched - with a raised eyebrow. The woman shut up and quietly sat down as though in a daze. The therapist turned to the husband and said, "This is what your wife needs at least 3 times a week. Can you do this?" "Well, I can drop her off here on Mondays and Wednesdays, but on Fridays, I fish." -------
