CITY Of ONKAPARINGA AUSTRALIA DAY AWARDS
FLEURIEU FOLK FESTIVAL WINS AWARD The City of Onkaparinga has awarded the 2014 Australia Day Community Event of the Year to the Fleurieu Folk Festival. The award is a big feather in the cap for the President and Coordinator of the festival committee, Peter Thornton. Peter, along with his wife Annie, with support from an enthusiastic committee, has been successful in building up the festival from humble beginnings seven years ago, to what is now the premier folk festival in S.A. This is a fitting reward for an enormous amount of hard work, meticulous planning and judicious management. Over this period of time the City of Onkaparinga has provided critical backing by way of grants and support in kind and advice whenever it has been sought. The S.A. government has too been a supporter of the festival. And there are a range of businesses that are so often the mainstay of the S.A. music industry who have generously supported the festival over a long period of time. For Willunga the award has special meaning, because the town has responded to requests for support and assistance in many and a diverse range of ways – from the use of the Recreation Park’s facilities, and the cooperation of the Willunga Primary School community to the contributions in cash and kind by so many from the Willunga business community, and the number of Willunga residents who assist as volunteers or who offer their homes to musicians for the weekend, or do both. So it is a proud moment. To Peter, Annie and to Val Corfield, this year co-coordinating the event with Peter, warm congratulations on behalf of the Willunga community. -------
SANTOS Tour Down Under 2014 Pure Blonde Stage 5 Congratulations to the McLaren Vale Business Association and its hardworking team for not only winning the Best Dressed Town Award, but also for taking out the best dressed overall - GOLD, and that’s as good as it gets! Congratulations too to our own Willunga team, headed by Tom Laing and street decorations coordinator Sue CapornMarch, who did themselves, the WBTA and their town proud by once again showing off Willunga’s best face to the world. Thanks to those who volunteered their time to assist Sue in a range of ways. Thanks also to the traders and residents along High Street and the three bike routes approaching Willunga who joined in the spirit of the occasion. Thanks also to the Willunga CWA for the use of their facilities in the lead up, and the Fern Forest Nursery for providing space for storing the decorations. The Courthouse area was a-buzz all day with great food, great wine and great live music – and hundreds of people, many from interstate, cycling enthusiasts, road race devotees, families and friends – all soaking up the atmosphere. Thanks here to the Willunga Branch of the National Trust and their wonderful ‘go to man’ Donald McDonald for making the venue and its facilities available; to Fox Creek Wines for the use of umbrellas and barrels; to ‘Fernies’ for the chairs; the wonderful bands – ‘Enuff Said’ and Sasha and Brenton – and last but not least, those volunteers who helped set up and pull down. A special mention here to Clayton from Port Noarlunga, (whose surname escapes me right now). He offered assistance to others on a number of occasions and in a variety of ways, even though he was fulfilling obligations to one of the stalls. A well-honed sense and understanding of community. WILLUNGA175 CELEBRATIONS BEGIN Hundreds of people gathered at the Old Courthouse, High Street Willunga, on Sunday 26 January, to enjoy a hearty Australia Day breakfast provided by the McLaren Vale Rotary Club with support from the City of Onkaparinga. Deciding to take advantage of the beautiful weather and the festive atmosphere, many of those visitors stayed on to watch the official launch of the year-long celebrations that are planned to mark the 175th anniversary of the establishment of Willunga. Willunga175 Publicity Co-ordinator, Ms Chris Horsman, who was MC for the launch, got into the spirit of things by dressing in mid-1800s style, complete with a smart black veiled hat. After paying respect to the Kaurna people, Chris acknowledged the contribution of local artist Maryanne Taylor, who provided the inspiration for the Willunga175 logo. (continued on page 3)

NEWS (CONT FROM Page 1) Willunga175 begins Graphic designer, Retta Larraway from Looksee Designs, finessed her concept to create the final logo, which represents the wine, the almond blossom and Old Willunga Hill. Local state MP Mr Leon Bignell, Member for Mawson and Minister for Tourism, Recreation and Sport, then addressed the crowd and formally launched the premier Willunga175 event, the Willunga 100 Wines “Hit the Hill” bike time trial up Old Willunga Hill. This exciting and challenging contest will be held on Sunday 7 September. Expression of Interest forms are available from the committee and on the Willunga175 website. The next speaker was Deputy Mayor of the City of Onkaparinga and Wine Coast Councillor, Ms Gail Kilby, who recounted some of Willunga’s very early history before officially launching the year’s celebrations. She was followed by Mr Jamie Briggs, Federal Member for Mayo and Assistant Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, who introduced the Willunga175 rose. Finally, Willunga175 Chairman, Mr Graham Ormsby OAM, thanked those businesses and organisations that have so far sponsored the various events: City of Onkaparinga, Events SA, Willunga100 Wines, Bendigo Bank, Willunga Quarry Market, OzFeathers, Paxton Wines, Fox Creek Wines and Timescape Photography. Once the formalities were concluded, visitors enjoyed sampling the various foods and wines on offer, while
queues of excited children lined up to have their faces painted by artist Vanessa. And with the launch of the Willunga175 rose, people came to the Willunga175 stand to place their orders, keen to be among the first in the world to grow this beautiful scarlet red floribunda. To secure your roses, complete the order form included in this issue of the Gazette, or download one from the Willunga175 website. Caps embroidered with the Willunga175 logo were in great demand too. They are available from the committee for $10. All in all, the Australia Day launch was a great start to what is looking like a great year of celebrations. The next official Willunga175 events are both on Sunday 16 February – The “Chords by the Creek” Musical spectacular at Fox Creek Wines and the Anglican Commemoration Service at St Stephens Church, St Andrews Street, Willunga. Details are in this issue of the Gazette and on the Willunga175 website www.willunga.com/175. -------

NEWS Sustainability Column Towards a more gifting community I believe in “gifting communities” This is where abundance is created by gifting skills and resources and being joyful receivers of the skills and resources gifted by others. The more we gift, the more we realize how little we actually require, how much we worry about what we acquire and how gifting rather than getting, is a source of happiness. Gifting also does away with the brutality of competition where the winner is the one who successfully manipulates the situation so that they can exploit the other person. This is what I used to do when buying investment houses. I would make really, really low offers on numerous houses. When owners tried to negotiate with me I just
said no, because I knew there were so many other houses out there. Eventually I would find someone who was so desperate they had to accept the way below market amount I was offering. This is the basis of our economic system. Position, position, position yourself to maximise your profit. Nothing else matters. It’s everything else that does matter! Now days I don’t have investment houses. I choose not to work my guts out ripping people off and accruing stuff so that I can spend what spare time I have left worrying about it. Happiness for me comes from sharing, not exploiting. A certain amount of money is currently necessary to get by in our economic system, but the less the centralized, corporatized monetary system controls
my actions, the more imbedded in the community, and happier I am. The Bike and Sporting Gear Swap on the weekend was a wonderful example of gifting. Some folk delivered perfectly good equipment with no intention of getting anything for themselves. I’m sure in the long run however their kindness will be repaid. Others swapped bikes, tread mills, exercise bikes, ab crunch machines, badminton rackets, you name it. The highlight for me though was a single mum walking past after the swap had finished. Her oldest kids were outgrowing their current bikes. They raced in with joy on their faces and both found replacement bikes from those remaining. Speaking of which, I still have two quite serviceable small bikes for anyone wanting one. There was feedback that the Tour Down Under made accessing the swap difficult so we’ll probably choose a different day next year but start putting aside your gear. If you still have adult sized mountain bikes that you no longer want, these can be donated to “Bicycles for Humanity” Sunday 2nd February 2014 10am to 2pm at Booth St, Happy Valley. These bikes get done up and sent to Africa. Alternatively bikes of all varieties can be donated to the “Bicycles for Refugees” program conducted by The Bicycle Institute of S.A. who make bikes available to Adelaide Refugees and other worthy individuals free of charge. Contact Mike Brisco, (m)0435 02 16 81, (h)08 8365 7489 Mike.brisco@flinders .edu.au Fleureiu Gardeners are another great example of
gifting. Every fortnight, once the weather is a little cooler, the gardeners converge on the home of one of their members and gift their gardening skills and energy for the morning. This is topped off with a wonderful morning tea. You might think what’s the point? The work you do in others gardens is only balanced by the work others do in yours. Wrong! · Social interaction distracts from the sometime monotony of gardening. · We get to experience lots of cool gardens · Our gardens benefit from the skills and experience of others. · Committing to a fortnightly time slot motivates us to spend more time in our garden. · The large amount of work that gets done in one hit in our garden is very motivational. · It’s just such a relaxing, enjoyable & productive way to spend a morning. Clothing Swap: This is our next community swap and it’s your opportunity to get rid of all those summer clothes you didn’t wear and all the winter clothes that you never wear and get some new items for the coming cooler months. For those who think ahead you’ll obviously also be able to stock up for next summer. The Clothing Swap will be combined with our food swap on High St next to the Green Room on Saturday March 22 from 8-12noon. Drop your clothes off early (get first choice), do your shopping then come back to see if there is anything “new” you would like. The LETS market will also be operating at the same location so who knows what you’ll find.
4
NEWS Food Swap: Due to popular demand, our fortnightly Food Swap is going weekly. From February 1, it will be adjacent to the Green Room either in the Green Market or on the street from 8-12noon. Is your peach, nectarine or plum producing more than you can handle? Bring them in to swap with summer veges and herbs, seedlings, preserves and flowers. Trees for Life Learn how to protect your local environment South Australia was once a biodiversity paradise featuring more than 3500 native plant species, 140 mammal species and 460 bird species. Due to broadscale native vegetation clearance, up to 98 per cent of our native bushland has been lost in some areas – and with it, many plant, animal and bird species. Trees For Life’s Bush For Life Program gives people from all walks of life the
opportunity to help preserve what little we have left by learning how to restore and protect our State’s native vegetation through bush regeneration workshops. At the workshop, participants will learn: why the bush needs your help; the best strategies for restoring ecological processes; minimal disturbance techniques; how to work safely in the bush; how you can get involved as a Bush For Life volunteer Continuous learning opportunities are also provided through the program, ensuring participants discover the best techniques to get
native plants regenerating and how to defeat invasive weeds. Bush For Life also holds advanced workshops which cover topics such as native plant and grass identification, advanced bush management techniques, brushcutting and more. Volunteers also choose how they want to be involved in the longer term. They can participate in small group activities every now and then, adopt a bushland site of their own or join our Bush Action Team. If you want to find out more about getting handson experience through Bush For Life, phone the office on 8406 0500. McLaren Vale grandmother joins ‘Daddy on a mission’ for the FMC Neonatal Unit
McLaren Vale grandmother Jean van Driel is inviting the local community and general public to join her in supporting her son Rob, who is a daddy on a mission tohelp the Flinders Medical Centre (FMC) Foundation achieve much-needed funds to purchasesightsaving eye diagnostic equipment for the FMC Neonatal Unit. The father of 7½ month old Charlie is leading the fund-raising drive to buy a $177,000 Retcam machine which will allow Neonatal doctors to better monitor and treat blinding eye conditions in premature infants. To help Rob raise the $120,000 still needed, his mother Jean is hosting a Daddy’s Little Legend Morning Tea from 10am – 12noon on Wednesday 19th February at Waverley Homestead, St Peters Terrace, Willunga. Tickets will be available at the door for $10 with 100% of all funds raised going towards the Retcam. “We invite the local community and general public to come along and, together, help to raise funds for the Retcam that will help to save the eyesight of premature babies like my beautiful granddaughter,” Jean says.
6
NEWS “Guests will also get the chance to hear Rob’s story and meet his little legend Charlie.” The Retcam campaign was publiclylaunched by the Modra Family together with the Flinders Medical Centre Foundation in December 2012, and has so far raised $47,000 thanks to donations from the general public. A graphic designer by occupation, Rob has launched the Daddy’s Little Legend Neonatal Appeal to help raise the remaining $130,000 which he is driving through his Facebook Page (www.facebook.com/dadd yslittlelegends) and has so far raised over $10,000. “I’m a daddy on a mission and I need your help: to provide the Flinders Medical Centre’s Neonatal Unit with the equipment they need to care for their premature and critically ill babies who, in my eyes, are little legends,” Rob says. “My little girl Charlie was one of them.” Rob’s daughter Charlie was born nine weeks premature and weighing just 1715 grams. “Charlie was a fighter and showed the strength, courage and determination to come home 46 days later and to be, in my eyes, a little legend.” Rob says seeing his little girl hooked up to lifesaving machinery left him feeling “helpless” as a father unable to protect his daughter. “I soon realised Charlie had a special team of doctors and nurses on her side, working around the clock and doing everything in their power to protect her and give her the best chance for life,” Rob says.
“When I saw the campaign for the Retcam, I became a daddy on a mission to make their wish come true. Alternatively, Rob is asking for donations to be made at www.teamflinders.com.au/ little_legends or by calling the Flinders Medical Centre Foundation on (08) 8204 5216 and says he is touched by the generosity of people so far.
Anglican Historical Commemoration Service As part of the Willunga175 Celebrations, people are cordially invited to a traditional Church of England Service, from the Book of Common Prayer, of Evensong, to take place at St Stephen’s Anglican Church, St Andrews Terrace, Willunga on Sunday 16 February 2014 at 6pm. Just as in the 19th Century, traditional words and music will be used: Hymns, Canticles, the Psalm and, as St Stephen’s is one of the “Places where they sing” the Anthem will be sung. Refreshments will be offered after the Service. This Service reflects one of the significant aspects of life in early Willunga: the early settlers of Willunga were of a deeply religious character and built places of worship as soon as was practicable after the founding of the town in 1839. The Wesleyans were first, in 1843, where the current Uniting Church now stands. The Anglicans started holding services in 1847. In 1848 Bishop Short, the
first Church of England Bishop of Adelaide, who had arrived in the Colony in 1847, laid the foundation stone of the first St Stephen’s Church, which he consecrated on 17 April 1849. That Church, in Aldinga Road, adjacent to where the Anglican Cemetery remains, was used as a Mortuary Chapel after 1884, and was demolished in the 1920s. The second St Stephen’s Church was built in St Andrews Terrace in 1884 and is still in use today. Also In 1848, in St Judes Street, the foundation stone of St Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church was laid. The Church, opened on 5 May 1850 by Bishop Murphy, who had said Mass in private homes when visiting Willunga from 1845, is still in use today. The Bible Christians followed in 1853, the Primitive Methodists in 1867 (their church is now the Altar Bistro) and the Church of Christ in 1870. -------
WILLUNGA IS COMING UP ROSES Commemorative rose bred in Willunga. The roses planted in gardens around Willunga have always produced a spectacular display, and Willunga is also home to Ross Roses, Australia’s oldest specialist rose nursery. It was therefore a natural step for the Willunga175 committee to decide to commission a special rose to commemorate the town’s 175th anniversary in 2014. The Willunga175 rose has been bred in Willunga by Australia’s leading rose hybridist, George Thomson, and grown by Ross Roses.
This beautiful floribunda rose will form an attractive bush one metre tall and wide, with small clusters of bright scarlet red double flowers and dark green foliage. An excellent garden rose for massed planting in flowerbeds or as a hedgerow, it will bloom for 8 to 9 months of the year. The flowers can be cut for decoration and have a light fragrance. The Willunga175 rose is unique and has not been sold anywhere else in the world. It will be available only from Ross Roses and the Willunga175 committee. We hope that it will be widely adopted by Willunga residents and become a prominent feature of the town. Place your order now Complete the enclosed order form or download one from the Willunga175 website www.willunga.com/175. Post the order form to the Willunga175 committee at PO Box 208 Willunga SA 5172 and you can look forward to collecting your winter dormant plants from Ross Roses in mid 2014. They will be individually wrapped, with a pictorial label and planting instructions. Rose competition in May Continuing on with the rose theme, residents can also enter blooms from their existing bushes into the cut rose competition at the “Discover Willunga” Fair on 4 May. To make sure that the roses in your garden are at their best in May, you will need to take the following steps: • First Week of March – trim roses lightly all over the bush, removing about 1/3, no more. • DO NOT winter prune - just cut off any old flowers or seeds (hips) with a short stem, as if
7
NEWS picking a bunch of dead flowers. • Fertilise after doing this. Scatter about one handful of any fertiliser you have around the root zone of each rose. • If using drip irrigation, scatter fertiliser along the dripper line where it will wet soil. • Water well once a week - for about 2 hours with drip irrigation, or if using a sprinkler, your usual watering times. • When April rains come, use your own judgement about whether extra watering is still necessary. • If there are aphids on the flower buds, squirt them off with water from the hose. There is no need to use pesticides. • Flowers should then be in abundance through April, May and into June. • Call Maureen Ross at Ross Roses on 8556 2555 if you need further advice. Visit the Willunga175 website As the “Discover Willunga” Fair draws nearer, there will be information on the Willunga175 website and in this Gazette about how to prepare your competition display and how to register your entry. Let’s make sure Willunga is at her stunning best in May 2014, with superb roses all around the district. www.willunga.com/175 ------Reflections on the Willunga Hill
It was most enjoyable as I stopped to talk to the hundreds of people from WA, Qld, NSW and huge mobs from Vic. Half way up a group I met a group of enterprising Vics had made arrangements with locals Val and Terry to use their property for a ‘rest and refreshment’ spot for their cyclists. Some were in early and had their 4 WD’s parked in the rare vacant spots up the hill. I got to the hill 1 hr before the expected arrival of the peleton. It was buzzing then with hundreds of cyclists doing the climb and finding a narrow spot to store their bike most of which cost more than a darn good car. There were special cheers for the 3 fathers I saw riding one handed while the other hand assisted their 10-12 y old son/daughter complete the climb. There is a reverence shown by the very knowledgable crowd towards the TDU riders. I was moving down the hill as the peleton finished the last lap.
Cyber savvy lycra men used mobiles to watch the finish and quickly concluded Gerrans took the yellow jersey by 1 sec. On Saturday I strolled up the hill to hand out flyers to September’s ‘Hit the Hill’ event for Willunga 175.
One guy yelled that to a Gerrans team mate well back in the field and he
immediately gave the rider next to him a high five.
Festival, school fairs and council community days.
Then I continued my descent. I counted the bikes whizzing by for a while and estimated 1000 would have passed me during my descent.
To foster the concept of creating paid work for performers, JamaeRaw has recently developed a semiprofessional group called Raw Company, which is designed to build these employment opportunities on a local basis. Their first show is the musical Pirates of Penzance to be performed on April 12th (2pm & 7pm) at the Hopgood Theatre in Noarlunga as part of National Youth Week. This model is a profit sharing setup for the lead roles and mixes youth with seasoned performers. There will also be several other performance opportunities for this talented group so keep an eye out for them!
A visit to the courthouse was a pleasant way to wind down, relax and soak up the fact that this race has put Willunga and its hill on the world map. So many I spoke to up the hill spoke highly of Willunga and they have been making the journey from interstate for years. Brian Dempsey -------

23rd MAY 2014 The Government is committed to the completion of the National Broadband Network (NBN) and that means copper services will be switched off on 23 May 2014 for residents and businesses in Willunga. Customers affected by the retirement of copper services in May will have recently received a letter from NBN Co confirming they have six months to act Now’s the time for these remaining customers to give us a call or come in to one of our local stores and have a chat with us so we can talk them through plans and book their connection. We encourage people to make the switch now to avoid getting stuck in the last-minute rush, which could mean ending up without a working home phone and internet service for a time. For BUSINESS call 13000BUSINESS and arrange an appointment for a consultant to conduct a review of the NBN products that will meet your Business communications needs For RESIDENTIAL customer you can visit either of the TELSTRA stores in COLONNADES or SEAFORD shopping centres or call Peter Fallon on 0458325561 who will come to your home and explain how to shift your phone services to the NBN and avoid disconnection
