Message from Consultants The Willunga Recreation Park is a community owned and operated sport and recreation facility, located at the heart of the community. The City of Onkaparinga is supporting Willunga Recreation Park Inc. to develop a strategic business plan and asset management plan to drive the continued growth and usage of this popular sport and recreation facility. Tredwell Management Services have been appointed to provide specialist sport and recreation planning advice to inform and produce these plans. The key objectives of the project will be to develop a vision for the site, identifying core business areas, priority projects to improve the facility and implementation strategies to deliver the vision. The project is anticipated to take three to four months and will include opportunities for the Park’s existing sport/recreation clubs and user groups to contribute to the process, as well as the wider community. Should you wish to provide comment on the future strategic directions for Willunga Recreation Park please email your comments to info@tredwell.com.au

From December 24, Carolyn and Peter Colling will be retiring from their business that has been in existence for 14 years at The Chocolate Box and will no longer be the contact point for STARS. Details of how the contact will continue will be in the next edition. They are still in residence in Willunga and will continue with the passion and commitment that has been our aim and pleasure to fulfil as STARS volunteers.

NEWS Streetscape update – WBTA At a meeting held on Nov 20that Waverley House attended by officers of the Onkaparinga Council, elected councillors and members of the Willunga community, and chaired by Cnr Jamieson, discussion focused on the essential element of the High Street development options proposed by the project manager and made public during the course of 2013 – i.e. the widening of the footpaths in High St. While there was a good deal of discussion about ways to enhance/beautify High St and Willunga in general, including approaches to the town, the consensus was that High St footpaths should stay as they are, but with consideration given to improving footpath surfaces. There were a number of reasons put forward, all quite valid, not the least of which was, given that funds have been earmarked for the project, the cost saving. The feeling in the meeting was that any savings be directed towards funding other more considered needs, including for example, pedestrian safety

(particularly at the hub intersection); ways of slowing traffic in High St; footpath surfaces (including those in streets adjacent to High St with an emphasis on ‘soft edges’ and shaded pathways); tree and flower bed plantings; portable seating areas (pop ups); communal space and ways of showcasing the artistic and historic nature of Willunga. In a presentation by Jerry Kyte, those attending gained an insight into how an imaginative, constructive and environmentally clever use of local expertise would not only provide a more enjoyable and safe environment for its residents but also enhance Willunga’s already growing reputation as an attractive destination in itself. Acknowledgement must be given to Cnr Chapman who in calling this meeting sought a spread of representation from various community groups. The information gained from this meeting will be taken on board by the project manager and a follow up meeting will be announced in due course. The WBTA has been represented

at every consultation opportunity and is sensitive to the frustrations that arise out of a public perception of ‘talkfests’. Unfortunately this has been going on for a long long time, and this committee (along with other community associations), is now looking at 2016 as the year the talking stops and the action starts. Sustainability Column 175th

Looking forward

It’s our 175th and we are celebrating our past. But what about our future? Now must be the time to take a serious look at that as well. What can we be initiating this year, to create a more sustainable Willunga to be proud of and part of in the future? To this end “Transition Town Willunga” and “Thrive Time” (personal awareness and community development classes) are sponsoring a number of activities throughout the year. We would like to hear from anyone who would like to assist in any of the activities listed below and also from anyone with other relevant ideas. Swap Meets This is where people contribute items they no longer need and in return get to select for themselves, from the items that others have contributed. There is no need to for prior contact, or to stay for any length of time. There is no direct bartering or exchange of money. This reduces waste and consumption of resources as obsolete items for one owner become the alternative to a new purchase for another. Swap meets also serve as an information exchange and community meeting point. Food Swap: Wil Heigt has been successfully hosting a chemical free food swap table

fortnightly for the last 6 weeks at the Green Market (adjacent to the Green Room on High St). From 8-12 noon you can contribute and choose from garden surplus fruit, veges, eggs, cut and or dried herbs, conserves and potted seedlings. Just drop off your produce, labelled if you think that will help, and choose a few items for yourself. Why not check out the Green Market or have something to eat at The Green Room while you’re there. Location: Adjacent to The Green Room on High St, 812pm When: Saturday January 18 & February 1, then every fortnight Bikes & Recreational Equipment Swap: On the day the Tour Down Under comes to town. Bikes, trikes, scooters, skate boards, skates, surf boards, snorkels, tennis @ squash rackets, dart boards, footballs, netballs, volleyballs, cricket sets, golf clubs, skis, you name it. As your kids grow out of one set, drop it off and perhaps find a bigger one. If you have upgraded over Christmas, help make someone else’s New Year If you don’t have any equipment to contribute but you would like to look for some on the day, why not contribute some snacks to share instead. All appropriate left over equipment will be donated to local OSHC centres.

Everyone who is interested in exploring the application of these ethics is welcome to our monthly gatherings irrespective of what exposure you have had to permaculture in the past. At these gatherings, we share lunch and participate in relevant workshops and discussions. 4 Husbands The local news station was interviewing an 80-year-old lady because she had just got married for the fourth time. The interviewer asked her questions about her life, about what it felt like to be marrying again at 80, and then about her new husband's occupation. "He's a funeral director," she answered.

SANTOS are excited to introduce a new community involvement activity for the 2014 event - the Santos Roadshow. We are calling on all farmers, landowners, families, community groups and businesses to decorate your country roadsides, paddocks and fences and put your South Aussie patch under the world spotlight. Prizes Generous cash prizes are on offer to each stage winner and an overall winner in both Judges Choice and People’s Pick categories. Per Stage Winners Judges Choice winner (per stage) $250 People’s Pick winner (per stage) $250 Overall winners

He then asked her if she wouldn't mind telling him a little about her first three husbands and what they did for a living. After a short time, a smile came to her face and she answered proudly, that she had first married a banker in her 20's, then a circus ringmaster in her 40's, and a preacher in her 60's, and now - in her 80's - a funeral director. The interviewer asked why she had married four men with such diverse careers. She smiled and explained, "I married one for the money, two for the show, three to get ready, and four to go."

Willunga’s 175th Anniversary This year the township of Willunga is celebrating its 175th anniversary. As one of the oldest towns in South Australia, Willunga has a rich history. It has developed into a vibrant community that embraces many facets of society, with sporting clubs, community groups, quality schools, excellent markets and restaurants, and a strong link to major businesses within the district, such as the wine industry. In our 175th year we will be celebrating and highlighting these features to the people of Willunga and South Australia. The Hundred of Willunga was surveyed in 1839 and was therefore established only three years after white settlement of South Australia. It was around this time that a slate quarry was opened in the district, establishing Willunga as a provider of high quality slate and so beginning its fantastic journey.

Introduction to Willunga175 Sunday, 26 January will see the launch of the Willunga175 celebrations. This will occur at the Old Willunga Courthouse complex and will follow on from the Australia Day Breakfast, an annual event conducted in Willunga by the McLaren Vale Rotary Club on behalf of the City of Onkaparinga. The launch will introduce residents of Willunga to the many activities that are part of Willunga175 and explain how everyone can be involved. Come relax at the Courthouse and enjoy the beginning of the celebrations. You will be able to find out about:  Cinemallunga Faux Klore  How to sign up for Hit the Hill  Ordering the Willunga175 rose  Becoming involved in Reflections of Willunga  Involving your organisation in Discover Willunga

Cinemallunga Faux Klore Competition Saturday 29 March Until the advent of television, films were run in the Willunga Show Hall every Saturday night, evenings that were well attended by local residents. The Cinemallunga team has revived the practice, with favourite movies being shown every 2 – 3 months throughout the year. They have rejuvenated the old projector room, installed a new screen and have made going to the pictures a fun and entertaining outing once again. Cinemallunga nights are fast becoming the “must attend” events of the Willunga entertainment calendar. As well as showing great movies, the Cinemallunga team has reintroduced cartoons, newsreels and an interval, just like in the “old days”. Special shows for children are sometimes held in the afternoon. They have also begun showing local “mocumentaries” under the title of “Faux Klore”. What is a Faux Klore film? It is a video around 3 – 5 minutes long, based on a fact about Willunga. The team takes the fact and makes a fun story out of it. Usually the only piece of truth is that starting fact. You can see examples of Faux Klore videos on the Cinemallunga YouTube site, where you can find out how Willunga came to have three pubs, unlock the dark secrets of the water tower and discover the main purpose of the bell tree.

Discover Willunga Fair

The Discover Willunga Fair is one of the major Willunga175 events. Its aim is to showcase Willunga’s features—its history, the present, and future potential. A range of activities is proposed to reflect Willunga’s past and present. These will include a re-running of the historical games from past Almond Blossom Festivals, as well as musical and sporting events. Other highlights will include the judging of the largest pumpkin grown by residents who have purchased the special seeds, a residents’ rose display, a local barista competition and, in particular, a revival of the almond-cracking and almond soup competitions. Please mark this date in your calendar and enter into the spirit of the celebrations by wearing appropriate period dress. You will be able to take part in our historical dress parades and competitions and win great prizes. The fair will also provide a fantastic opportunity for all the clubs, organisations, groups and businesses associated with Willunga to reach out to the wider community and showcase their wares and specialities. This can be done in several ways: 

As part of the Willunga175 celebrations, we invite you to produce your own Faux Klore video and join in our fun competition. You do not need sophisticated equipment or be a skilled filmmaker. Just capture your Faux Klore story on your smartphone or digital camera. This all adds to the effect. If you need any advice or assistance please contact us and we will organise the Cinemallunga team to help. You need to have your video ready for showing at the Cinemallunga event on 29 March. We will be awarding fabulous prizes to all the entrants and the best Faux Klore story will win the inaugural Cinemallunga Holy Grail award.

We are planning to have some well-known movie experts to judge the Faux Klores and we promise a fun and enjoyable night. Be involved! 

A Willunga Fact A Willunga resident in the 1970s, Roger Liminton, was previously a BBC set designer. He is remembered for designing sets for some of the early Dr Who series including The Three Doctors and Carnival of the Masters.

Sunday 4 May

Demonstrate your present activities by having a stand at the fair (free for non-profit groups, low cost for other organisations). You may use this stall to recruit new members, sell your products, fundraise or just show what your organisation does. We are especially interested in any activities that we can arrange to publicise your group. This component will also enable you to promote any plans you have for the future. One of the aims of Willunga175 is to highlight the rich past of Willunga, so your organisation might wish to focus on events of historical significance to the group. In particular, if you would like to recreate activities that your organisation undertook in the past, please let us know so they can be included in our program. For example, displays of old photos or products would be welcome. If there are competitions or displays, aside from your stall, or which can involve the participation of attendees at the fair, we would be delighted to know about them.

Please get in touch if your organisation would like to take advantage of this special occasion.

The Almond Blossom Festival was begun in 1969 by people of the Willunga District to raise the funds required to replace the very elderly and inadequate Willunga Town Hall and the galvanised iron supper room (booth), toilets and other facilities. In 1979, after ten years of effort, the money raised through the festival and many other activities culminated in the opening of the current Willunga Recreation Centre (stadium) along with the purchase of their own equipment. As part of Willunga175, we plan to celebrate this wonderful festival and we invite you all to be involved. Firstly, we encourage the residents of each street (or several streets) of Willunga to get together and create a float for the Almond Blossom Parade. The float should represent what Willunga means to you and the township. Second, come along to the Almond Blossom Ball. The theme this year will be “Past, Present and Future”, so put together a table of friends, dress accordingly, and enjoy the music provided by two very different bands (as per the original ball). Join us to celebrate the 45th Almond Blossom Festival and Willunga’s 175th anniversary.

“Hit the Hill”

Sunday 7 September

“Hit the Hill” is the premier event of the Willunga175 celebrations. It will provide keen cyclists with the opportunity to time-trial up the famous Old Willunga Hill and to compete for the inaugural “Hit the Hill” crown. Building on the intrigue of Old Willunga Hill, the major Tour Down Under hill climb, the event will allow cyclists of all standards to test their hillclimbing skills. The 3 km bike hill climb will start in front of the Old Bush Inn on High Street, featuring a starting gate based on that used in the Tour de France. We will adopt the Tour Down Under “King of the Mountain” finish line at the top of the hill, approximately 50 metres before the turn-off onto Range Road. Riders will be able to continue onto Range Road and complete a circuit back into Willunga, with a finish line in front of the Willunga Show Hall. This circuit will also be timed. We invite riders of all ages and abilities to have a go at the hill and we will award certificates of achievement, and crown a “Hit the Hill” hero for the different age groups. This challenging bike time trial will be accompanied by a revival of the historic soapbox derby on Willunga’s High Street, which was a regular feature in past years. The Willunga Business and Tourism Association and former members of the Willunga Apex Club will conduct this activity. Travelling down High Street from a starting point near the Golden Fleece coffee shop, the soapboxes will cross the finish line in front of the Post Office. The day will be capped off with a wine and food event featuring local produce, where all participants and spectators can relax after a day of fun and achievement. If you are interested in attempting the hill climb, look out for the expression of interest forms, which will be available during the Tour Down Under in Willunga. This will ensure your place in the starting line-up when we call for competitors later in the year. If you are interested in participating in the soapbox derby, check the Willunga Gazette each month or monitor the Willunga175 website – www.willunga.com/175 – where details of how you can be involved will be announced later in the year. “Know Your Willunga” Quiz Night Saturday 22 November Questions at the “Know Your Willunga Quiz Night will be based on Willunga’s rich history, which dates back to 1839. They will focus on events, activities and people associated with Willunga and the surrounding districts, from 1839 up to the present.

However, we do not expect you all to become expert historians! Throughout the year, at all our events, in all our publicity and promotions, and on our website, we will provide you with information you need to answer the questions, in one form or another. Everything will culminate in the spectacular Quiz Night, where you can compete for major prizes and test your newly gained knowledge of Willunga. This will be a fun night with lots of entertainment and games to complement the quiz questions. We propose to have special guest stars as our quiz masters, so please mark this date in your diary and share a table with family, friends or neighbours.

Now and Then Photo Exhibition Over the past 175 years, Willunga has seen many changes. We are planning an exhibition that will highlight these changes, so we are seeking photos that show an aspect of Willunga that has been transformed over the years. The images can be 175 years old, recent, or from any time in between. The aim of the exhibition is to show the original scene alongside the present day one. If you are willing to share any such photos, please contact Sabine Verhack on 0434 043 549. If you happen to have the negatives of any photos we would appreciate access to these as well. Photos will be copied and the originals returned to you if you so wish.

Willunga175 Rose Ross Roses is Australia’s oldest specialist rose nursery, established in 1902 by George Ross in the Adelaide Hills region of Norton Summit. The business has been based in Willunga since the late 1970s and, to celebrate Willunga’s 175th anniversary, Andrew Ross, a fourth generation rose breeder and a great supporter of Willunga, has developed a special floribunda rose for especially for Willunga175. The Willunga175 rose, which will grow into an attractive bush with a rich red double flower, will be available for purchase as part of the Willunga175 celebrations. It will be launched at the “Introducing Willunga” event on Sunday 26 January, where pre-orders will be taken. Delivery of the plants is scheduled for May 2014. This beautiful rose is unique and has not been sold anywhere else in the world. We hope that it will be adopted by the residents of Willunga and become a prominent feature of the town.

The exhibition is likely to be held in several venues around Willunga in June and we plan to eventually present the photos to the Willunga branch of the National Trust, to be preserved for posterity. Reflections of Willunga Reflections of Willunga is an important part of the Willunga175 anniversary celebrations. We aim to record oral and pictorial memories of Willunga from current and past residents, both young and old, to ensure that this valuable information is retained for the future. This is your opportunity participate in documenting the more modern history of Willunga. Do you have a story or special memory of Willunga that you’d like to share? Are you willing to be videotaped? If you’re a bit shy, we’ll be collecting audio recordings, and will accept written information and photographs too. This activity will continue throughout most of 2014. Collected information will be compiled and made accessible in several ways – probably a DVD and accompanying book.

A Willunga Fact “Taffy” Waye played 71 games for Sturt from 1903 to 1910. He won a Magarey Medal in 1903.Taffy was known to ride 25 miles on horseback from Willunga to Unley to train and play for Sturt in 1903, regularly filling in for Willunga between league games at Sturt.

COMMUNITY NOTICES Countries featured in the festival this year included Latvia, Cambodia, Holland, Scotland, Australia and the Marshall Islands, in addition to a tree with messages of happy Christmas in many languages. Special congratulations to the Sunday school children for raising $120 for the Cambodian children living in the slum are of Phnom Penh by selling their handmade Christmas cards. An event like this does not happen without a lot of creative and special people. Volunteers collectively made and served delicious Devonshire teas, created a kid’s passport trail, created multiple Christmas trees, installed new lighting, made goods for the stall and grew plants. In addition to being on hand to welcome the many visitors to Willunga. Well done to all. Collectively the festival shares in supporting the Christmas Bowl appeal and Uniting Church projects.

The Christmas Bowl Appeal is the national Christmas appeal for Act for Peace, the international aid agency of the National Council of Churches in Australia and funds raised will be going towards providing girls in Afghanistan with the opportunity to attend

school and escape the vicious cycle of conflict and poverty in a country that is so unstable. The Christmas Bowl story this year is focused around Adela, a young girl from Afghanistan who has been given the opportunity to go to school. Without access to education, Adela may have faced a lifetime of poverty and oppression. Women without an education are more likely to get married younger, have more children and have very few job opportunities. Their children are also more likely to live in poverty. Thanks to the Willunga Christmas Tree Festival and community and other dedicated Australian’s Act for Peace’s local partners in Afghanistan have been able to supply tables, chairs, blackboards, trained teachers and school bags giving children like Adela one of the most important gifts they can receive, an education.

“My school bag contained books, notepads, pencils, crayons, rubbers, ruler and sharpener. I liked my school bag and its contents. They were really useful and help me learn more while I’m at school, which is good because when I grow up, I want to become a doctor to help my country. Volunteers still needed Trees For Life is urgently looking for 200 more volunteers in South Australia to grow native seedlings this summer. The Tree Scheme operates by annual seedling orders being taken for landholders, councils, government projects and private enterprise, with Trees For Life then linking up orders with volunteer growers. Trees For Life provides all the propagation materials – seed varieties, tubes, boxes, soil and mulch – free to volunteers, along with easy-to-follow instructions. The materials can be collected at a local distribution depot in your region in mid-November. Once sown and raised, seedlings are handed over for planting about six months later. Those interested in volunteering don’t need to have a green thumb – it’s a perfect way for people to do something positive to help our environment, it’s free and it’s a feel-good experience! Durre’s work is inspired by Pakistani “Truck Art”. The practice of which dates back to 1920 when public transport became a highly significant part of urban culture in the subcontinent; it continues to be an integral part of Pakistani transport & culture. Using beaten stainless steel and ‘chamak patty’, a highly durable fluorescent tape, Durre creates colourful and incredibly detailed pieces including mirror frames, coasters, ornamental boxes and mobiles.
