WILLUNGA ---GAZETTE--A monthly publication of the Willunga Business and Tourism Association Inc recreating events or activities that have been held as part of previous fairs or celebrations in Willunga and would love to hear your ideas.

As part of the Discover Willunga Fair, we will be holding a rose competition and a pumpkin-growing competition. We encourage individual residents and street groups to enter. Purchase your seeds now from Willunga Physio or Office & Image and start growing so your pumpkins are ready in time for the May judging. First prize will be awarded for the heaviest pumpkin.

RESIDENTS OF WILLUNGA - LET’S CELEBRATE! Willunga’s 175th anniversary in 2014 is fast approaching and the Willunga175 organising committee invites you to become involved in the celebrations. Willunga175 will provide a great opportunity for more people to discover the many fascinating aspects of Willunga – its past, present and future. A program of special activities aims to complement regular events held in Willunga and we want to engage as many residents, organisations and businesses as possible. You will find a full calendar of events at the bottom of this bulletin and on our website at www.willunga.com/175.

As residents of Willunga and surrounding districts, you will have a number of opportunities to band together and showcase your special part of Willunga: 

History of your street or a famous incident relating to the street

Create a project that details the history of your street (e.g. where its name comes from) or a famous incident, person or event relating to the street. This competition is open to all young residents of Willunga and further details will be provided later this year. 

Produce a Cinemallunga Faux Klore video

Watch the hilarious Cinemallunga Faux Klore videos on YouTube (just search for “Cinemallunga”). Be inspired to create your own crazy 3 – 5 minute Faux Klore video, by giving a different, humorous slant to your street’s history or some interesting local fact. Fabulous prizes to be won! The Cinemallunga team can explain how to produce your entry, which will be shown at the Willunga175 Cinemallunga event in March 2014. 

Discover Willunga Fair 3 – 4 May 2014

This fair will be held at the Willunga Recreation Park, to highlight Willunga’s rich and extensive history, present opportunities and future exciting developments. It will provide a vehicle for all the clubs, interest groups and organisations based in and around Willunga to promote their activities to the community. We are also offering residents the chance to show off any special interests they have or to organise any activities they believe would engage visitors at the fair.

Almond Blossom Parade

Get together with your neighbours to create a street float and participate in the 2014 Almond Blossom Festival Parade in July. The float should reflect the theme “Past, Present and Future”. Plenty of scope to generate some great ideas! 

Know Your Willunga Quiz Night

Later in the year there will be a quiz night with questions that will highlight Willunga’s history (from 1839 right up to 2014) and focus on the changing landscape of the town and its residents. We plan to provide clues to the answers throughout the year to assist you. So organise your team and find those clues by attending Willunga175 events. 

Christmas Tree Festival

Neighbours might also like to participate in the Uniting Church annual Christmas Tree Festival and create a Christmas tree that also reflects the “Past, Present and Future” theme. Visit this year’s festival in December to find out what is involved. 

NEWS THE (Willunga) HILLS WERE ALIVE WITH THE SOUND OF MUSIC… There was a singing nun, accordion playing, a yodel competition, lusty singing, Nazi-booing, confetti, party poppers and a real bride marching down the aisle at Cinemallunga’s Sound of Music night on October 19. A large and enthusiastic crowd filled the hall and joined in heartily as the classic story unfolded on the big(gish) screen. Many dressed up for the evening and the audience reported that this may have been the best Cinemallunga night yet. Many thanks to the Every Generation Festival and Onkaparinga Council for their support of the night.

Cinemallunga’s next movie night is on Saturday Nov 30th at 7:30 with the classic Cinema Paradiso showing.

How many of us would eat meat if doing so required us to first raise and butcher the animals concerned?

This is a well-loved Oscar winning tale set in a small Italian village. Money raised from this show will be used to support the Black Cockatoo Fire Fund, so please mark it in your diary and come along to support both local cinema groups.

Growing your own vegies is one thing, but Willunga Waldorf School year 12 student Aarod Vawser decided to ‘go the whole hog’ this year when he chose as his year 12 project: From Piglet to Plate – Producing Pork, Ethically.

Inspired by British chef and smallholder Hugh FearnleyWhittingstall (of TV series ‘River Cottage’) and supported by a range of friends, neighbours and expert mentors, Aarod bought two Berkshire piglets and raised

them until they were old enough to be turned into roasts, sausages and all manner of other dishes.

Between February and March this year, the Willunga Waldorf student encountered many challenges – from obtaining permission to raise the pigs on ‘community land’ to erecting a solar-powered electric fence, maintaining a blog and responding to opposition to the project from within his community.

Subsequently he indulged and expanded his love of food preparation, creating hams and bacon, sausages, salami, prosciutto, haggis and pate.

Unfamiliar cuts and offal were not ignored: recipes in Aarod’s collection include chilli port trotters, crispy pig ears and tempura testicles!

Along with his year 12 class mates, Aarod will be speaking about his project on Saturday November 23 in the Willunga Waldorf School hall.

Members of the public are welcome.

NEWS Willunga Mural Competition Like to paint? Always wanted to make a mural? Keen to join Willunga’s growing artistic culture, or, already part of it?

Here’s your chance to have some fun with friends and contribute to Willunga’s wonderful street scape .

The inaugural Green Light Festival on November 16, at Willunga’s Rec Park is hosting a mural painting competition.

Open to anyone who has friends and owns paintbrushes, this competition promises to be one of the highlights of Willunga’s own sustain-ability festival.

The winning entry is to be recreated as a permanent fixture somewhere in Willunga.

Who want’s a mural?

The final resting spot for the mural is yet to be confirmed, and organizer Jeff Simmons is keen to hear from anyone

who has a location to offer, or at least, a location to suggest.

To be considered for having the mural at your location, you must: · Be willing to come to the festival and be part of the judging team. · Be responsible for a permanent, large blank surface that is suitable for a mural in the Willunga area (township preferred) that is in clear public view. · Organise any council approvals if required. (We will help with this) Rules of the competition? · Teams are to be made up of three to five members. · There will be an adult and a junior (under 16) category · All team members must be part of the Fleurieu Community (live, work, study, regularly shop, play sport or be actively involved in other ways in the local community) · Each team will be provided with a selection of left over

house paints and a large canvas. · Each team will create a mural depicting their understanding of a more sustainable Willunga. · Each team will supply their own painting tools. · Teams will be allocated set times to create their mural.

- Juniors 10.00 – 12noon - Adults 1.30 – 4.30pm · Teams should be present for the judging at 4.45pm. · Winning teams must be willing to volunteer to recreate their mural at the designated venue. · All teams must be willing to have their mural auctioned to raise money for running the festival next year.

Greg Trott Pipe Organ Inc. In 1995, the late Greg Trott, McLaren Vale identity and hatcher of grand schemes, purchased a fine 3 manual, 40-stop English Romantic organ from Crafers Church of the Epiphany, and set about having it rebuilt for his Wirra Wirra winery. The organ, including a beautiful new console made from wine-barrel jarrah, has been in limbo since Trott’s death in 2005, hidden in the darkness and heat of a 20 foot shipping container.

From his obituary: “Some (of Trott’s dreams) will remain as just wonderful ideas. Some, like the organ, the book and the siege machine, will be finished in time by others to continue the legacy.”

For the pipe organ, those others have now emerged!

Friends of the Greg Trott Pipe Organ Inc. has been formed with the ultimate objective of installing it somewhere in the McLaren Vale region for the benefit of the whole community.

At the launch we will share the fascinating story of the project from Trott’s original idea to the present – with photos and sound recordings.

We will have the first public performances on the new console, which has been placed in Trott’s old church and is being reconfigured as a “virtual pipe organ”. Using modern computer software and sampling techniques, the operation and sound of the instrument is as close as possible to the real thing – a very fine instrument in its own right, but without pipes as yet.

GUEST ORGANIST is Senior Organ Scholar at St Peter’s Cathedral, Alexander Paine, who will play a number of pieces to show off the organ’s capabilities.

Several local organists will also play and the audience can enjoy singing some famous hymns to the glorious accompaniment of a grand pipe organ.

Willunga Recreation Park Annual General Meeting 2013 - President’s Report The past year has seen a continuation of budgeted improvements to the Recreation Park facilities, the maintenance of a sound financial position, a successful Almond Blossom Festival and a determination to develop a new strategic plan over the coming year.

Improvements have included:  new lighting in the stadium $12000  new tractor $27,000  Hot pave to cricket practice run-ups, around football change rooms and RSL pergola $10000  renovation of Show Hall office and upstairs projection area $20,000 The lighting, hot pave and office renovations were partly supported by grants from City of Onkaparinga and South Australian Cricket Association. We have also been successful in gaining a $40,000 budget allocation from City of Onkaparinga to

restore the slate roof of the Show Hall. We are also hopeful of gaining an Arts Facilities grant to assist with Show Hall facilities upgrade.

The financial position ebbs and flows during the year but has consistently maintained a cash balance above $100,000.

The efforts of our Treasurer, Brian Dempsey, are to be applauded as he has maintained a tight control of spending but has been more than happy to invest in big ticket items that provide long term benefits to the recreation park.

Kate and Jason Fleming ran a very successful Almond Blossom Festival this year that raised over $40,000. It was well supported by sponsors and the crowds and it was most pleasing to see the greater participation, particularly at the Ball, by the various clubs that use Willunga Recreation Park.

The greater participation has been an outcome of the annual Presidents' meeting, which has initially looked at the role of clubs within the Almond Blossom Festival and has now expanded into participation in a Willunga Recreation Park strategic planning process.

The program is exciting and the recreation park will be at the forefront of participating in the program, for the mutual benefit of the recreation park and the local community. It may be 25 years until the next anniversary event, so all clubs and local people are urged to get involved and enjoy themselves.

I wish to conclude by inviting interested people to join the committee and to serve on the Executive group. We need people with talent and drive as well as those who have a capacity to take on specific projects. I recognise that many people are already busy serving the clubs they represent but word of mouth is a wonderful thing. If you know a talented person, suggest they come along or give us their name and we will contact them. As a community, Willunga really punches above its weight and it all comes down to encouraging local residents to contribute however they can.

The Willunga Recreation Park executive and general committees have continued to function well and have been very supportive of club-based and recreation park-based initiatives. I wish to thank soon to be retiring members, Darryl and Margaret Peters, for their long contributions to both the table tennis and

One important issue raised at the Presidents' Meeting was that local people do not understand sufficiently that the Willunga Recreation Park is community owned and community managed. That's right - the local community holds the titles to the land and owns the buildings. It is disappointing that people complain, for example, about admission prices to the Almond Blossom Festival, perhaps thinking that the money goes to the City of Onkaparinga - it does not; it stays entirely within the recreation park and is used for improvement and maintenance of the facilities to benefit the local community. It is one of very few community owned and managed recreation parks in South Australia.

The strategic planning process will be supported by the City of Onkaparinga through provision of a consultant to assist us. We will consult

NEWS Extracts from the Mayor's September newsletter Past Mayor Jim Aldridge You may be aware that past Mayor Jim Aldridge passed away on the 9 September 2013. Jim was a long term council member of Willunga District Council joining them in 1985 and serving as both Councillor and Mayor until 2002.

Jim was Mayor of the District Council of Willunga during the amalgamation of the three councils into the City of Onkaparinga. The region can thank Jim for many things, not least was his support for zoning of the Aldinga Beach and Sellicks Beach areas into residential from deferred urban, efforts to preserve the Willunga Basin from urban sprawl (that’s where it really started), support for Aldinga Football Club and his passion for beach protection and many others.

Jim was a retired navy man and his wish was for his ashes to be spread on the sea around his beloved Port

Willunga beach. His adult children will do this when the weather is kind.

I asked Council to consider putting a small plaque on the Port Willunga car park to commemorate his last resting place. I have spoken to his family and they would be honoured for this to occur. I recommended the following; ‘That Council work with the family of the late Jim Aldridge to design, word and place a plaque of remembrance at Port Willunga Beach car park to recognise his contribution to the area and his last resting place.’ - and was agreed by Council.

As further explanation, I have considered this appropriate as he will have no formal structure in any other place to note his passing.

China delegation Planning is well underway for the delegation of Chinese business and government leaders to our city in November. This visit will coincide with the food and wine festival and the Sandstorm S and Sculpture competition both to be held at Christies Beach during November.

Cadel Evans to ride the 2014 Tour Down Under The South Australian Government has confirmed Champion Australian cyclist and 2011 Tour de France winner Cadel Evans will compete in the 2014 Santos Tour Down Under.

It will be the first time Cadel has returned to Adelaide since he won the largest cycling race in the world.

Tourism Minister, Leon Bignell, says the announcement by Cadel’s BMC racing team is great news for next year’s race and will encourage cycling fans to come out in full force to see him.

“He is synonymous with Australian road cycling and having him here will create even more interest in this fantastic international event,” Mr Bignell said.

“The Santos Tour Down Under provides a $43 million boost to South Australia economy each year and Cadel’s appearance will no doubt help to increase these numbers.

“Each year 40,000 visitors come from interstate or overseas to watch the Tour.

“Cadel is a crowd favourite and we are all very proud of his achievements so it will be great to welcome him back to South Australia and the Santos Tour Down Under.

Cadel has competed in eight Santos Tour Down Under races, most recently in 2010.

Santos Tour Down Under Race Director, Mike Turtur, says it is a major coup for the event and Australian cycling fans that the 2009 World Road Champion will compete in Adelaide in January.

NEWS “This will be the first time that Australian cycling fans have seen Cadel race on home soil since his historic 2011 Tour de France win,” Mr Turtur said.

"He's one of our greatest riders of all time, our only Tour de France winner and road world champion. I've always admired his respect and commitment to the sport and his total commitment to suffer during races."

The 2014 Santos Tour Down Under will be held in and around Adelaide from 19-26 January 2014.

SAPOL news The South Coast Police is urging the community to keep an eye on their valuables whilst at the beach.

We are urging all beach goers to take on the following security tips;  minimise the valuables taken to the beach,  consider securing valuables in the boot of vehicles where they are out of sight, and  take turns and ensure one person remains with the belongings at all times.

Report any suspicious behaviour to police on 131 444.

MAHBOBA'S PROMISE Hello Willunga community people:

At present there is another beautiful Home and School in isolated Tashakar ready to support and educate girls and boys. The financial requirement is $10,000 per month. I was hoping to find at least 100 local people to commit to $5, $10 or whatever per month to assist with this.

There is also opportunity for local schools, classes, children to connect with school children already in education in this wonderful organisation.

At present, the Hon. Quenton Bryce, Governor General of Australia is the Patron.

As there are only three partly paid employees, with all other fund raising etc carried out by volunteers almost 100% of money goes directly to the Projects.

Donations of $2 and over are tax-deductible.

We are hoping to bring Mahboba to Adelaide/ Willunga in the new year.

Willunga 175 Heritage App As part of Willunga’s 175th celebrations in 2014, the National Trust, in partnership with the Willunga Primary School, are creating new ways to experience Willunga’s history and heritage.

John and I met Mahboba Rawi in Sydney recently. She is an Australian Afghani woman who, after the tragic drowning of her 6 year old son in 1994, made a promise to the Afghan orphans on the streets, to educate, feed, clothe and accommodate as many as she could.

Her non-profit organization works in Afghanistan bringing hope to hundreds of orphans and widows whose lives have been ravaged by years of war.

The STARS of Waverley Award Judging was held at Waverley Homestead on Sunday 22 September with the panel comprising of Meredith Bowman, Libby Raupach, Lucinda Moon, Gail Kellett and Julie Howard.

The unanimous winner was Indigo-Rose Redding a Year 12 visual arts student. Her work included a full length costume made out of recycled material which she will show at the Christmas Gala Concert. She will receive a prize of $1500 to assist with her career.

Two encouragement awards of $200 each were given to Hanna Freeman and Elliott Warren, the junior applicants.

The autonomous judging panel will refine the application forms for next year's award as well as the age criteria.

STARS involvement in the Award is to find the funds, coordinate the applicants and host the presentations at Waverley Homestead.

The main award will be presented to the winner at the Christmas Gala Concert on Saturday 16 November when the Team Leader of Arts and Cultural Development at Onkaparinga Council will be present.

The annual Dance Workshop for STARS was held on Saturday 28 September which coincided with the Football Grand Final so those who came to the Show Hall were there to learn some new moves.

The gracious Rae Marnham and her group Zhivana came from Adelaide in full Bulgarian Costume which they had made and gave the enthusiastic audience a 20 minute concert of folk dances from Bulgaria which seemed very energetic but lovely to watch. It was time for the group to teach some simple dances from all over the world and everyone joined in keen to do well. We managed to learn three dances and then enjoyed a tea break before attempting some Latino styles.

Lynne Willis who is a Latino, Zumba and salsa expert proceeded to show her technical excellence and fast pace while the audience considered joining in. Rae and her group loved the challenge of very fast music and amazing hip movement while some of the others were decidedly out of breath.

Rae commented that the STARS Dance Workshop group is the most enthusiastic and refreshing that they haveexperienced in all of their years of teaching folk dance.The day concluded with Zhivana teaching some Scottish folk dances including the Gay Gordon,Pleased to Meet you and more.

STARS will host Zhivana again next year and the Show Hall venue with a wonderful wooden floor proved to be popular.Thanks to Lynne Willis and Rae Marnham and her group for an interesting and entertaining afternoon.

Willunga Primary School News Katrice played in Inters 3 for the Willunga Netball Club this season , winning equal Best & Fairest. She was the youngest in the team, playing with and against 15 & 16 year olds. During the season Katrice filled in for the Inters 1, C and B grade teams, playing against adults and was named best & fairest in one of the C grade games! She was asked to trial for the U15s SHNA Netball Academy – and to

Jayden & Seth recently represented South Australia in the National Rugby 12s Championship held in Perth during Term 3. Jayden and Seth represented the school at the SAPSASA district competition (which their team won) The trials for the state team required many hours of travel (to and from Woodville) and participation included 3 hours of training almost every day of the Term 2 school holidays.

Jayden & Seth each scored a try in the very first game (the only 2 tries for SA that game) and continued to play solid games each day of the 6 day competition.

When SA played the mighty Queensland (the eventual winners of the championship), Jayden was singled out by the Queensland coach who congratulated him for his hard tackles & fair game play. Seth dominated the back defence lines every game and saved many a try during the week. Although SA came 7th out of 8, the boys can be extremely proud of their efforts. The Willunga Primary boys did a fantastic job at representing their school, their district and their state.

Quit while you’re ahead A retiree was given a set of golf clubs by his co-workers.

Thinking he'd try the game, he asked the local pro for lessons, explaining that he knew nothing whatever of the game.

The pro showed him the stance and swing, then said, "Just hit the ball toward the flag on the first green."

The novice teed up and smacked the ball straight down the fairway and onto the green, where it stopped inches from the hole.

"Now what ?" the fellow asked the speechless pro.

"Uh... you're supposed to hit the ball into the cup." the pro finally said, after he was able to speak again.

"Oh great! NOW you tell me," said the beginner.

Trees For Life is urgently looking for 200 more

Each year about 1000 volunteers raise hundreds of thousands of seedlings in a bid to help continue to revegetate SA and we hope to reach this important target with the community’s help.

TribeFM broadcasts seven days a week and offers a wide range of music, interviews about local people and events, community announcements covering local activities and, of course, lively commentary from our presenters. Tribe also offers free training for members who would like to present their own show.

Through the award-winning Tree Scheme, volunteers are asked to grow and care for the seedlings for landholders and revegetation projects in South Australia.

Trees For Life provides all the propagation materials – seed varieties, tubes, boxes, soil and mulch – free to volunteers, along with easyto-follow instructions. The materials can be collected at a local distribution depot in your region in midNovember.

Once sown and raised, seedlings are handed over for planting about six months later.

The seedlings provide food and habitat for our native wildlife, help counteract some of South Australia’s Greenhouse gas emissions and help rehabilitate land that has been degraded.

Those interested in volunteering don’t need to have a green thumb – it’s a perfect way for people to do something positive to help our environment, it’s free and it’s a feel-good experience!
