Fleurieu Folk Festival
One of Australia’s most acclaimed troubadours Jordie Lane heads a stellar line up of artists announced for the 2013 Fleurieu Folk Festival. Lane joins 60 local, national and international acts booked to perform at South Australia’s premier folk festival to be held at Willunga on October 25-27. They include Canadian singer songwriter Old Man Luedecke, The Seals from West Australia, Siskin River from New South Wales and a strong Victorian contingent including Richard Perso and Danny Spooner as well as South Australian favourites The Borderers and Spiral Dance and Chris Finnen. Fleurieu Folk Festival organizer Peter Thornton said the artist line-up, selected from a record number of applications this year, was brimming with talent. “With the breadth of performers in this year’s program, it promises to be one of the most exciting and fun festivals we’ve ever staged,” he said. “Each year the bar is lifted. We had more than 300 applications to play at the festival this year so we were really spoilt for choice. A high calibre artist like Jordie Lane is proof that the next generation of folk and roots musicians in Australia is really taking the baton and running with it.” The festival will once again feature a strong representation of young and emerging performers, including The Mae Trio – winners of the 2013 Folk Alliance Australia National Youth Showcase - as well as other festival favourites. “We’re bringing back the blues concert on Saturday night which will feature some of the best blues performers around. There will also be free
workshops, blackboard concerts and jam sessions so anyone can join in,” he said. Thousands of people attended the Fleurieu Folk Festival last year for a weekend packed with music concerts and sessions, dance, workshops, children’s entertainment and stalls. Adult tickets are only $60 for a weekend pass (accompanied children U15 are free). Tickets are available online at Dramatix. For more details and the complete list of performers go to www.fleurieufolkfestival.com.au
-----Ozfeathers “Flying High” in Sydney
History Repeats on Bondi Beach
OzFeathers' designer, Linda Sanders, recently scooped the "Flying High" Award at "Festival of the Winds", Bondi Beach 7 & 8 September 2013 for her China-themed kite and feather banners. Linda's last Bondi competition entry was in 2003, which also won a First Place Award, proving that the ten year gap hasn't dampened her skills, but rather, helped them to mature. Festival of the Winds is an annual Cultural Festival, now in its 36th year, where kite flyers invade the world famous beach, displacing the many bikinis and Speedos, for two days only. Waverley Council By-Laws prohibit the use of kites, frisbees and balls for the remaining 363 days. ------Thank you The Willunga Circle of Friends wish to thank all donors and members in the Community who generously supported the Garage Sale on Saturday 14th September. Unfortunately at the last
minute the sale had to be held in the Willunga Recreational hall due to the fickle weather. The funds raised will be used to support five refugees in the Community who attend the Thebarton Senior College. To raise further funds a Quiz Night is scheduled to be held on Saturday 16th November 2013. Kind regards, John Bennett. Convenor. Willunga Circle of Friends -------

As you would all know an event like this doesn’t happen without the generous support of its community members; volunteering time and materials. That is why we’re calling on you to help our Willunga175 Celebrations start on a fabulous high by decorating our town on JANUARY 25th, 2014. What we’re asking of you is just an hour or two of your time. Every little bit helps. We have a great time and who knows you may meet someone you never knew lived in the town and become friends. The following dates are when we need your help: November 2 & 4 – Bamboo cutting and trimming
Dust off the nun’s outfits, loosen the vocal chords and release your inner Von Trapp as Cinemallunga presents The Sound of Music – singalong style. All the old-style movie trappings – popcorn, tray-girls and intermission fun can be expected, as well as a live band, weiner sizzle and licenced bar. This classic G rated film is presented as part of the Every Generation Festival and is an ideal night out for all ages. Tickets are expected to sell out quickly and may be purchased from October 1st from Aldinga Beach Newsagency, Chocolate Box in McLaren Vale or Tall Poppy in Willunga. So if a little light yodelling is your thing on a Saturday night, set aside Sat Oct 19th at 6:30 in your diary. The Willunga Show Hall, opposite the Alma Hotel, is the venue with proceeds from the night going towards Cinemallunga’s upgrade of this great old venue. -----Grow seedlings to help South Australia’s environment Trees For Life is looking for volunteers to grow native seedlings this summer. Through the award-winning Tree Scheme, volunteers are asked to grow and care for the seedlings for landholders and revegetation projects in South Australia. The Tree Scheme operates by annual seedling orders being taken for landholders, councils, government projects and private enterprise, with Trees For Life then linking up orders with volunteer growers. Trees For Life provides all the propagation materials – seed varieties, tubes, boxes, soil and mulch – free to volunteers, along with easy-to-follow instructions. Once sown and raised, seedlings are handed over for planting in the winter months.
Call Sue on 8556 7314 when you’ve decided to contribute, either your time or by donating any of the above mentioned materials and we’ll send you details of Days, Times and what equipment is needed. Ciao, Sue Caporn-March Willunga Business & Tourism Association 2014 Tour Down Under Décorating Committee Continues on back page

The seedlings provide food and habitat for our native wildlife, help counteract some of South Australia’s Greenhouse gas emissions and help rehabilitate land that has been degraded. Each year volunteers raise hundreds of thousands of seedlings in a bid to help continue to revegetate SA, and with the community’s support, Trees For Life is again hoping to reach this target. Those interested in volunteering don’t need to have a green thumb – it’s a perfect way for people to do something positive to help our environment, it’s free and it’s a feel-good experience! People interested in becoming a volunteer grower can phone the office on 8406 0500 or log onto the Trees For Life website: www.treesforlife.org.au -------Mayor’s Update A couple of items from the Mayors August update. Congratulations to Willunga High Ice Hockey Team the Raiders who competed in the recent Schools State Championships at the Ice Arena. Moving from Division 2 to Division 1 was a big jump but the players were able to handle the pressure and improve their team work, skating skills and discipline. Two players received encouragement awards, Carl Ridsdale and Coen Stephenson and Ryan Phillips-Lock was inducted in to the Ice Hockey Hall of Fame, the highest Ice Hockey award. The team finished in 5th place but claimed a brilliant victory over the eventual Champion Team in a nail biting penalty shootout, with goalie Sam Kaplin being the star of the win with brilliant saves. -------

Willunga Cricket Club seeks sponsors
Districts Cricket Club. The WCC was formed in 1876 providing opportunities for members of the local community to play cricket in a local competition. In this time, the WCC has supported both young and adult people to train and play in our teams. The WCC also has very strong links to its local community, supports the growth of cricket in local schools and is committed to the “Milo in2 Cricket” program. During the 2013/14 season the club will field three senior sides, three junior sides and Milo in2 Cricket. This equates to over 100 registered members players. Together with past players, parents and supporters the membership is in excess of 300 people. We also have a number of planned social events for 2013/14. We understand that our business partners are a key ingredient to our success not only financially but also the skills and knowledge they contribute via their association with our members and players. The WCC understands the importance of making contributions back to our business partners and have developed initiatives that enable us to promote your business and its products to our members, players and supporters. This exposure enhances your business image and heightens awareness and recognition of your company name and its contribution to the local community.

Willunga Football Club Footy Wrap UP Well the Finals are over and Willunga managed to snag their fourth Reserves Premiership in a row by defeating McLaren Football Club but the Senior Colts and “A” grade flags eluded us once again. The Reserves had another great year with only two losses and considering how they struggled at times for players, they played a great style of hard footy that is always a pleasure to watch. The Senior Colts cruised through the year with just one loss and were beaten in the last game by Victor who always has great depth in the Colts sides. The “A” grade had a bit of a roller coaster ride. Round 1 they came out fighting and defeated the reigning premiers. Round 2 we saw the boys absolutely tear Victor apart. We lost
round 3 possibly because we underestimated the opposition, not realising the GSFL has improved so much and so quickly, with all the other clubs still using us as the bench mark of this great competition. That meant there were no easy wins, no weak opponents and that’s what makes this league great. After an uncharacteristic two losses in a row the “A”s got a big wakeup call about where the competition was travelling and if they wanted to be successful they had to lift the work rate, change attitudes and not just go through the motions. Congratulations to the boys. The next four rounds made the supporters stand up & smile with pride, despite the injury list growing.
side was testament to that. A special mention to Jonathon Cook. Remember this name as this lad won the Association Best and Fairest medal in the Senior Colts with a whopping 44 votes. Congratulations Cooky. Willunga Football Club is recognised by the SANFL as the second oldest constituted Australian Rules Football Club in South Australia (Second to Port Adelaide) and you can find history and club details and contacts by going to www.gsfl.com.au and scrolling down and clicking on the Willunga Logo or going to www.willungafc.com.au --------
Willunga Netball Club
The second half of the season showed how tight the competition is. Willunga had three very close losses, which should have reminded the guys that you could not afford to lose concentration. But the big upside to this was they took a couple of big scalps, plus had three big wins which set them up for a great finals campaign.
AGM Monday 30th Sept 7pm at the Alma Hotel. If you are interesting in joining our committee there are a number of positions avail-able. It would be great to see some fresh faces and ideas.
Unfortunately even though the scores were tied with less than a minute to go Encounter Bay over ran the Demons to take the flag. But boy what a game it was. It had high marking, solid tackling, long free runs and some great ruckwork.
People of all skill levels are catered for and all equipment is provided. All matches are in the Show Hall in the Willunga Recreation Centre. If you wish to play in the 10 weeks of competition, ring John Nixon on 85565950 or Darryl Peters on 85964128. --------
Willunga “A” grade has played in 9 Grand Final in the last ten years and taken home 6 flags (straight) so all members should be proud of the guys that take the field every week. And of course Mitch Portlock who won the Mail Medal (“A” grade Best and Fairest) last year, was runner up this season…. just a magnificent, consistent and skilful player. And watch out for the Juniors that are coming through. Willunga has a fantastic reputation for bringing up players through the ranks and this years “A” grade
