Around the world with essential oils

N

ow that the cold weather is making its presence known, it is the perfect time to use our plant medicine to fend off all the winter doldrums, from SAD to colds and flu and achy muscles.

Rhododendrum essential oil might make you think of flowers, but its properties can send germs packing. This native of Nepal (aka Rhododendron anthopogon) is considered sacred and used to balance energies. It is well known for its antibacterial and decongestant properties. Its analgesic characteristics can help in a massage for muscle soreness. A blend with lavender in a carrier oil such as avocado would be really lovely for someone suffering from the flu.

Manuka (Leptospermum Scoparium) hails from New Zealand, where it has been used by the Maoris for overall health and well-being. It is said to be about 30 times more effective than tea tree against certain types of bacteria. It could also be included in the massage blend for flu, for its anti-inflammatory properties.

Another essential oil which is amazing this time of year is frankincense (we carry two varieties). Not only is it a wonderful oil to help bring calm into a hectic day, but it has also been used to boost the immune system and heal coughs and cold symptoms. Blending with a citrus such as red grapefruit or Persian lime would help you create a great morning

combination for getting through days with less sunlight and cold temperatures when all we feel like doing is hunkering down under heavy duvets.

Foody scents like allspice (pimenta officinalis), black pepper (Piper nigrum) and cinnamon bring warmth to the body (and soul too) this time of year. Just make sure you dilute them well in any bodycare you may be creating. Any essential oil can also be diffused in the air-not only for its scent, but therapeutic properties to help keep your household healthy throughout the winter!

and develop mindfulness. Belief and mindfulness can make you stronger and more resilient. Set aside time each day to give thanks and connect with your spiritual side. Practice your faith by seizing opportunities to be kind and generous.

Stressing our system can cause our adrenals to become overworked, the thymus to function inefficiently, hormones to go out of balance, all of which lead to our state of health.

This shows us that our moods effect the overall running of our machine so to speak.

Question: Is there truth to the growing sense that spiritual values are necessary if we want to achieve peace or even survive in the future?

SRI CHINMOY: Spiritual values are of paramount importance if we want to achieve peace for it is spirituality that consciously embodies peace, and without peace there can be no future.

Peace can be achieved only through prayer and meditation. Spirituality is not something theoretical; it is something practical. Who can be more practical than God Himself? He created the world to give Himself joy and fulfilment. Since spirituality is definitely practical, likewise, prayer and meditation are definitely practical.

Prayer and meditation come from the heart, not from the mind. The mind is not going to give us peace.

It has to get peace from somewhere else, and that place is the heart. If the world is going to change, it will have to change in the heart first. If we can regularly pray and meditate, then our heart will be in tune with God all the time and it will definitely get peace in abundant measure.

The outer peace is something that comes from the inner peace. The outer peace does not last for long, but the inner peace lasts for a very long time, or even permanently. If you can enter into the deepest world and stay there for some time during your meditation, a day will come when, in the midst of the outside world, in front of people, speaking with people, mixing with people, you will possess your own deepest Peace. This Peace remains imperturbable, unmoveable.

I believe that all those who pray and meditate are helping people who sincerely want peace in the world. It is from our prayer and meditation that we can establish peace through the feeling of a oneness-worldhome where self-giving and loving can play their full heart-role in perfect harmony. Not in the near future, but in the most distant future, peace will really take place in the world. Peace will grow in the soil of the Mother Earth.

Why Aligning the Jaw is Important The pituitary gland in the brain helps regulate the production of hormones in the body’s other endocrine glands. That is, the pituitary gland is a master gland.

Problems with this very small gland can affect menstrual cycles in women and sperm production in men.

The pituitary gland sits in the base of the sphenoid bone behind the eyes. Muscles tether the sphenoid bone to the jaw and skull. When the sphenoid bone is out of alignment, it can stress the optic nerves that pass through it and, most importantly for fertility, the pituitary gland. By balancing tension in the head and jaw, the sphenoid bone can realign, thus optimizing the position of the pituitary gland.

We are feeling things collectively now, more than ever. So this sense of pressure goes far deeper than our individual preoccupations. The illusion of separation has been weakened, and though this is a positive shift, it carries with it the need to hold it and stay strong and perhaps find ways to help if we choose to. This is not always easy.

It is impossible to know what the future will bring. Numerous experts have warned us about the unknown ahead.

So, how to deal with the current situation and face the possibilities ahead and stay calm and grounded?

To seek an attitude of indifference may feel temporarily satisfying, but it is based on a disconnect, and as the mythic ostrich puts its head in the sand, this isn’t a viable solution. As a first step I believe that it is now more important than ever to develop a grounded perspective, an inner strength and balance, to be able to cope with this influx of information and possibilities ahead. To do so is in part based on a healing process, healing our fears, resentment, inner obstacle to our own clarity and resilience.

On Highly Sensitive Youth & Fitting In

T

he lady sitting in the next chair to mine at the hairdressers was talking about how her daughter is different and how it has been difficult for her to fit in with her peers. She had been going through a very rough time. The woman stated that a group of mothers with sensitive children had been meeting for 10 years trying to figure it out.

I answered that I believe that a lot of the children being born today are highly sensitive individuals who do not understand their sensitivity and don’t even know how differently they approach life until they are in their late teens, early 20’s. Often times once they see how different they are from the others, they have no coping tools, no knowledge to understand who they are and often turn to addictive substances to numb out the confusion and to fit in. 20% of the population falls into this category called empathy – and that number apparently, is on the rise.

Silence fell between us until one woman said she thought I was right – and then asked where do you find out about this kind of stuff and who can you trust with the answers?

Highly sensitive youth have a specific profile – they can tend to be genius-like, mindful, insightful, creative thinkers, very accommodating, gifted artists, and will put others’ needs before their own, even to their own detriment – adults in general, are not noticing how often these youth’s specific needs are not met because these youth seem to cope well on the outside and say they are “fine”. As a result, they do not have the support they need to figure themselves out.

Empathy is not a mental illness, it is a sign that the individual does not have the same filters as others to block out extra stimulation and sees things differently as a result. They need to be understood and respected for their originality and courage. They and their families need a special education on the subject, which includes strategies to help cope and how to process energy. This is not psychology – it is personal energy management within a universal spiritual energy that most people don’t know about, yet one these sensitive youth are in tune with unknowingly. They need an education because deep down, as they see how different they are from the others, they start to wonder if they are crazy or that something is wrong with them – when indeed neither statement is true.

here are times when we have to choose between what’s going to move us forward or what’s going to hold us back. Often, we do want to move forward, and be free of the pain, the dull repetition, or the dogma.

But then when it actually comes time to choose, we hold back and think that we’re better off where we are, as though our limitation is somehow healthier. Of course, we can acknowledge that this is fear surfacing, but we still have to consciously choose - between anti-life and life.

one Magazine is a wonderful place to learn about valuable ideas which may not be discussed in other media. Sometimes, topics presented in Tone may be old ideas, long forgotten or repressed and returning to public awareness . Here’s another old idea to consider: psychedelics.

I grew up assuming that psychedelics were bad.

Maybe you did too? I believed that they were a harmful practice of carefree youth because an authority figure had said so, without evidence. Decades later, I was about to discover the truth. Indeed, “the truth shall set you free.”

What are psychedelics?

Psychedelics are medicines originally from both natural plant materials, and more recently from artificially equivalents. These materials have been used safely by traditional, spiritual healers for millenia in different cultures and countries, for healing and spiritual/ psychological growth.

These materials include psychedelic mushrooms, Amazonian vines, certain cacti, LSD, MDMA and more, even Morning Glory seeds; these materials include many, many more plants and other substances from different parts of the world. Traditional shamans used them regularly in caring for their people.

But they are illegal! Beginning with US political fear and control of the 1950-60, these materials were decriminalized on the basis of no facts or research whatsoever. Many decades later, the pressure to decriminalize them is building force, led in the US by the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) and parallel agencies in Canada and other countries. World wide movements now are completing much research to verify the great value of psychedelics for inner growth and healing in a wide range of ways.

This leads to allowing these materials to be available again safely and wisely for those who need/want them.

Portugal is the first country to decriminalize psychedelics. No harm has followed. Might it be that Canada’s pioneering action to decriminalize marijuana might lead to greater movement of legal, responsible psychedelic use?

How did I discover this ancient, unique, unparalleled role of psychedelics? CBC Radio One’s “Ideas” presented a series of three talks on psychedelics, beginning in October 2015. As I listened to these talks, I knew that I had mysteriously and miraculously found information that I had long sought, yet I didn’t know what. Like a parched person crawling to water, I followed every online links offered by Ideas. Aha! -this is what I’d long sought, what my ancient forebears may have known in the forgotten past. But asking

others randomly was useless; those around me reacted in horror if I mentioned the word ‘psychedelics.’ So I continued my search alone on the internet. I devoured youtube talks and books and attended conferences. I learned that as unlikely as it is true, news of early pioneering psychedelic research, which was carried out in the small south Saskatchewan city of Weyburn in the 1950s under Dr. Humphy Osmond, was relayed to the renowned author Aldous Huxley in California. In due time, Huxley’s writing on psychedelics then spread to the world. And the rest is history.

What has it done for me?

I have made great spiritual and psychological growth from consuming some of these materials in a careful, safe set and setting. However, this journey cannot be described in this small space. I have found a community of others, local, national and international, who share the same healing discoveries of the therapeutic value of psychedelic medicines. There is no space to list them here. You must search online for yourself. There is no space to list the many names, books and links here.

A non-psychedelic substitute After psychedelics were unjustifiably banned in the 1960, one of the first, great psychedelic pioneers, Dr. Stanislav Grof, was faced with a dilemma. Frustrated by denial of further psychedelic journeys under his guidance, his students challenged him to create a substitute. He did, and called it Holotropic Breathwork.

ast month I attended a conference in Scottsdale Arizona and I arrived two days prior to this event to escape up to Sedona with my wife. We had heard many stories about this magical place and we were both looking forward to spending quality there. We were not disappointed.

We had the opportunity to get out to the Boynton Vortex with a local guide and we took the time to just sit there and look at the rock formations that are all around us. I sat there with an open heart and an empty mind simply taking this all in. No thoughts, no comments, no distractions, no judgement…just me and the beauty that was all around me. What wisdom did these rocks have to share with us today? This was the only comment our guide said to us as we left this place.

My first thought was to realize that this harsh, desolate and empty landscape, has had the ability to sustain life over thousands of years. This emptiness also reminded me of the need to turn inward and connect with ourselves.

One of my teachers calls this the consciousness of emptiness where we make a deliberate effort to get quiet and consciously connect with our divine self. This emptiness is not at all a large void. To the contrary, this void is filled with abundance, joy, prosperity and all the other things that you might desire. It is by having an open heart and an empty mind that you can tap into this force and create the life that you want. Dare to Dream!

Five (5) Ways To Unstick Addictions

I

’m going to show five ways to interrupt and to overcome cravings, whatever they may be. The first one is bilateral stimulation. This technique involves stimulating both sides of the brain to stop anxiety. I tend to think that when people are addicted to things it’s because cravings seem to act like anxiety in the brain. This is a very simple technique to use. So what I ask you to do is imagine that anxiety, that craving is there, notice where it is in your body and rate it on a scale of 1 to 10. Now simply pass a water bottle, a ball, your cell phone, any object, back and forth, hand to hand, making sure that your hands cross the midline point. What you’re doing here is stimulating both hemispheres of the brain. Check in with yourself after a few seconds, 30 seconds, a minute of doing this, then take a deep breath, notice what happens. You’ll notice that the anxiety or the craving has dissipated, maybe completely or maybe significantly. This is because both hemispheres of the brain have been activated and are spreading blood and electrical impulses throughout the

body. This actually floods your association and diffuses it. That’s why it works. And shout out to Melissa Tiers, author of “Integrative Hypnosis”, where I get many of these techniques today. I recently took a course from her.

Another one is peripheral vision or stop the world.

Pick a point in front of you to stare at. Slowly begin to expand your peripheral vision to include all the spaces around that spot. Now expand your vision even further to the sides, all the way to the ceiling and down to the floor. Expand it even more allowing your visual field to open so you can imagine almost becoming aware of the space behind you, 180 degrees to 360 degrees. This might feel a bit strange at first, but by practicing this a few times, you will notice a general calm coming out of your mind and body as you realize your internal dialogue, i.e. that chatter inside you has stopped.

Sometimes just knowing that you can press the pause button on the cravings by stopping the self-talk that keeps it going, as well as the anxiety that leads to it, is a pattern interrupt that often shifts you out of the, “I’ve got to have this now state.” There’s an interesting thing about going into peripheral vision as I’ve talked about in another article or the learning state as they call it

-NLP - or in the Hawaiian spirituality of Huna, is when you put your awareness completely outside of yourself - it’s impossible to have a negative emotion. Now shoot back in and go into peripheral vision that is focusing on that one spot shooting back into your brain. You can feel negativity all you want. But truly when your awareness is outside and you’ve expanded your awareness, you can’t feel a negative emotion, i.e. you can’t feel a craving or anxiety. Pause this podcast now and test it out.

Welcome back. Next one is heart cohesiveness. This technique is adapted from the work of the HeartMath Institute - this is a group of doctors and psychologists who are studying heart rate cohesiveness and its effect on mental and physical health. It stimulates the vagus nerve to down regulate the system to create a parasympathetic balance. Start by bringing your awareness to your heart, and as you do so imagine breathing in deeply, in and out from your heart. Perhaps hold your hand over your heart to keep your awareness there as you breathe through it. Some people visualize the energy moving through the heart. The heart is the strongest emitter of electro-magnetic energy in the body.

By doing this exercise, you begin to train your brain into a cohesive and more relaxed brain wave state. To find out more go to the HeartMath Institute. Now try this.

Welcome back. The next technique I’d like to share with you is a jaw-dropping moment, taking power away from the craving or the anxiety creating a jawdropping experience. Take a moment to relax your jaw as much as you can. Loosen it even more and imagine it dropping to the floor. Doing this stimulates the vagus nerve that carries information from the nervous system to the brain, keeping it informed about what the body is doing. When you drop your jaw, you’re stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system to counteract the fight or flight or freeze response. You are also encouraging the lungs to reach for a nice deep breath, creating a flood of biochemicals associated with the relaxation response.

So just relax your jaw, take a deep breath in, pause and count to three and exhale twice as long, through the nose. And when you inhale deeply, put your hand on your belly and feel it rise. This ensures that you’re breathing from your diaphragm. Some people find that by inhaling for a count of four, pausing for three and exhaling for eight, they’re able to keep their mind from ruminating as they allow the relaxation response to cohere with their breathing. This is from Melissa’s own work at the HeartMath Institute. Personally, what I found is what I call the 7/11 breathing - breathing in for a count of 7, and you breathe out for a count of 11. Helps to switch people from sympathetic nervous system, i.e. fight, flight or freeze, into the parasympathetic nervous system, which is a far more a calm, balanced state. But both seem to work. It’s just, that’s my preference.

And the fifth tool I’d like to share with you today is how to come out of a craving to interrupt that craving addiction pattern by shifting prospectus. Now, as soon as you feel yourself having a craving or anxiety, locate where it is in the body. As soon as you find it, notice the shape or other qualities that it’s playing out with.

If all you do is change the shape and you shrink it down, just notice what happens. Imagine it as a colour, what colour does it feel like? What colour would feel better? Imagine as you change the colour to one that feels better, that the cravings change into something else. What’s it changed into? Another way of feeling better is to imagine dropping right to the centre of that feeling and breathing through it. Notice what happens as you drop to the centre and ask yourself, if this was a message from my unconscious, what is it? And if there was a lesson here, what can I learn from it? You could imagine this craving as a pebble, and imagine that pebble amongst many on a wide expansive beach. Now imagine that beach on an island, and that island in an ocean, on a planet, in a galaxy. And notice how you feel now.

So these are five very, very quick tools that you can use to pull you out of addiction, cravings, or anxiety.

There’s the bilateral stimulation that again floods both hemispheres of the brain that gives you more balance.

There’s peripheral vision, which is stopping the world when you focus on something outside of you, that allows that awareness to go to both sides of view from the top to the bottom of the ceiling and the floor, all the way back to 360 degrees. When you put all your awareness outside, you cannot feel a negative emotion. There’s the heart cohesiveness from the HeartMath Institute where you imagine breathing in through your heart for a count of 7/11. There’s the jaw-dropping moment that’s really simple. But don’t confuse the simplicity of it for its effectiveness. It’s simply dropping your jaw and when you do that, the vagus nerve that sends information from your nervous system to your brain relaxes and takes you from the sympathetic nervous system that is fight, flight or freeze (your unwanted cravings) to a parasympathetic nervous system that is more calm, balanced, relaxed, and more controlled. The final one is the shift in prospectus that is essentially imagining the craving, the addiction, or the pattern. The anxiety is a shape change ( fight, flight), the colour, change in the energy, how it feels, and then putting it somewhere else in your body will change that for you.

You can use any or all of these to see which one works for you. So you have more than enough to be getting on with to interrupt those old patterns.

Below I summarize presentations on Sex, Drugs & Rock n Roll to two Chapters of the Canadian Society of Dowsers in October and November 2018.

SEX We spoke of different nutritional support [tyrosine for men; & tryptophan >as in turkey< for women], which promote the the natural manufacture of neurotransmitters [dopamine in men & serotonin in women] as pre-cursors to the production of sex hormones.

DRUGS We addressed the importance of balancing four essential neuro-transmitters ...Dopamine, Acetylcholine, GABA & Serotonin naturally without Drugs.

For example, we balanced deficiencies of DOPAMINE & ACETYLCHOLINE in a volunteer at Ottawa. To do this we applied muscle response testing feedback using dowsing rods. From clinical kinesiology we used “Advanced Position” “Pause Lock” to retain an unlocking indicator muscle into circuit like we do in biogenic food testing, and in this case assessed, which aspects of life would correct the deficiencies. S.C. commented afterwards on his experience that he felt expansive, yet balanced, his body heated up, and he could better tolerate the fluorescent lights. We also observed a very rosy complexion.

One of the modalities we used on S. C. was tapping stimulation on select acupressure points toe to head, which can increase calcitonin hormones which in turn support dopamine levels. According to Dr. Norm Shealy’s published research stimulating these 13 acupressure Ring of Earth points prevents & reverses osteoporosis for bone integrity & is 40-60 times as powerful as morphine for pain management. [Dr. Shealy is both a neurosurgeon, psychologist and prolific author. He re-popularized TENS machines from the 1920s and improved on them. Many consider him the father of today’s holistic health field or “advanced medicine”.]

At Ottawa, we demonstrated on another volunteer increased range of motion up to 60 degrees more... of the right hip flexor in under 10 minutes. We achieved this by erasing past trauma in muscle memory due to ankle, mammogram & root canal injuries.

Quantum Physics and Working in the Quantum field

Aileen M. It’s been a joyous year of working with this new model of coaching, and understand even more profoundly how the quantum field is always operating whether we know it or not, and how much our wellness and our joy in life is part of what is going on with us at an emotional level. In fact, it is at that emotional level where it all begins. And I’ve discovered a better grasp of that, as I moved forward into this world of coaching.

It is a very simple process, but being simple, doesn’t mean that it is easy, nor without many complexities, but rather, we mostly need to get out of our own way, when doing either Quantum-Touch Healing work, or Law of Attraction coaching. Our intense desire to be in charge, to control processes is the greatest detriment to allowing the healing to take place, and as we consider this conundrum, this apparent contradiction, we need to consider the level of emotions involved when we are contemplating change, and the high levels of energy we feel when we feel intense love, vs what we feel when we are feeling depressed, or frustrated.

Coaching is a special process for clients who are struggling with moving forward in their lives, or who are wanting to make changes and don’t quite know how to take those steps to take first. Others who are wanting to find new ways to live and feel stuck from old messages from the past. Any of these situations can be helped with a Law of Attraction coach. When we work with a coach, we feel more in charge of our lives, and our decisions. Very empowering work creating happier, healthier and wealthier clients.
