wo years ago, I had the good fortune to parT ticipate in a wonderful experiential hypnotherapy training seminar on Cape Cod, sponsored by the

Harvard University Medical School. The focus of the seminar was the integration of Eastern meditation traditions with self-hypnosis and visualization practices from Western psychotherapy traditions. The Harvard Professor of Psychology who led this seminar has collaborated and traveled extensively with The Dalai Lama. The seminar was very valuable because this topic is on the very cusp of where East meets West.

Meditation is a wonderful way to access this state.

However, the challenge then becomes one of developing the “staying power” to maintain this blissful state.

Awakening is the state of STAYING FULLY AWARE that you are fully conscious “all the time”. Ken Wilber challenges all of us with this incredible question, “Since we are fully conscious all the time, why do we seemingly “lose” our awareness of this?”

Particles of sand: the art of meditation Interview with Lynne Cardinal

"The brain waves of meditators show why they're healthier. Neuroscientists have found that meditators shift their brain activity to different areas of the cortex—brain waves in the stress-prone right frontal cortex move to the calmer left frontal cortex. In other words, they were calmer and happier than before." - Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D., of the University of Massachusetts Medical School Excerpts from an interview with Lynne Cardinal by Tanya Witteveen, undertaken as research for her master's thesis. Tanya is working on her Master of Arts degree in Human Kinetics at the University of Ottawa.

Tanya: Lynne, could you explain the process of meditation?

Lynne: Meditation is a tool to help settle the mind, to create a sense of peacefulness within. Once that is achieved, a new type of awareness emerges, a perspective that is impossible to attain with an overactive or anxious mind. According to Ken Wilber, a contemporary philosopher of international acclaim, "Meditation empirically demonstrates techniques that will increase self-esteem." Indeed, meditation provides us with confidence or a sense of self that is peaceful, stable and unshakable. This confidence is not based on superiority but rather on the knowledge that our true essential existence is free. That behind the body and mind, there is calmness.

The first step is to settle the mind, gain focus and deepen our meditation.

There is an analogy I like to use to describe what happens to the mind during the process of meditation. Imagine an aquarium with sand at the bottom. Now take a stick, stir up the sand, and watch as the particles whirl around, clouding the water. The particles of sand are your thoughts, the water your state of mind. Mostly, our state of mind is cloudy. We get up in the morning and thoughts whirl around: "I must do this, I must go there, I must not forget x, y and z." And off we go! Too often, our minds are in a

constant state of activity, busy planning, thinking, remembering, anticipating, worrying. We live in the past, and in the future, but seldom in the present. When you meditate, you temporarily remove that stick from the aquarium, and the first thing you see is the momentum—and it whirls!

At first, the speed of whirling may even appear worse, because, unlike before, now you are looking directly at it. This is when some think, "meditation doesn't work for me, I can't settle my mind". But it is working.

Just wait. The momentum will slow down and then, just as the particles of sand eventually settle, so will your mind. If you meditate long enough, the sand may completely settle at the bottom and you will see clear water.

People often tell me, "I open my eyes after meditation and I see better.

Sometimes colors seem even brighter, scents more acute. Above all, I feel better because I have a clear mind."

You can use meditation to get to deep place inside of you. To illustrate this point, think of the ocean, whose surface is generally quite choppy. If you go just slightly below, you will still feel the currents from above. But if you go deeper, you are no longer affected by what's happening on the surface. Likewise, when you go very deep into meditation, you can free yourself from superficial mental activity and experience a deeply balanced state of mind. A regular meditation practice is not only balancing and healing, it is also a great tool for coping with issues and problems. So when a crisis occurs, you will be prepared, as you literally have practiced and developed a healthier perspective on life. You will find yourself reacting with greater ease, agility and clarity. With years of practice, stability will permeate your being. In Sanskrit it's called Stithi and refers to a fundamental equanimity that predominates, no matter what. But it is fundamental. You may still feel sadness or unease, but you remain aware of a deeper place in you that remains stable, calm. Allowing space for your emotions is important. We do not want to fight with them. Providing space for them is healthy, and then letting them stay and go, naturally. With time, you develop a sense of being an objective observer in your daily life. In a way you realize that the deeper you no longer rise and fall with the superficial waves. Your greatest stability lies deep within.

Tanya: Sometimes people feel frustrated because of not achieving tangible results quickly enough. It seems extremely difficult not to judge our meditation Lynne: That is true. We judge according to concepts we've acquired based on what we consider good or bad. That's what we've been taught. We constantly judge ourselves and others, our work, our relationships, our yoga practice, our meditation. So one day, you feel good in your meditation and you experience a profound sense of peace, and you think it is beautiful and blissful and that finally your meditation is working. Those experiences are really remarkable, but they will pass, and it can be very frustrating if you depend on them or expect them to happen every time you meditate. So if the next day, instead of experience something special, you encounter endless thoughts whirling about, you may feel uncomfortable and disappointed. Then you will think, "I'm not a good meditator", again, judging yourself. In reality your objective in meditation is to practice it regularly no matter what and to observe your thoughts dispassionately. As it is often said, "Just show up. The rest will happen by itself." If you keep at it, you will eventually transcend the conceptual judgmental mind that has been superimposed on you by culture. Every meditation counts, as they are cumulative and lead to transformation.

That very act of not judging your meditation is essential and will carry over into your daily life. You will be less harsh on others and kinder to yourself. When you meditate, you gradually get to a place of authenticity that is pure awareness. The practice of meditation involves a definite process, and what is essential to understand is that the secret lies in perseverance.

Do not stop. Just keep at it. Rest assured that nothing bad will ever happen to you in meditation if you practice with the guidance of a qualified teacher and use proper techniques. Enjoy every meditation, even when you have a lot of thoughts. Let them be, humor them a touch, then return to your technique. You may have a hard time settling your mind at times, but it is all part of a gradual process that leads to transformation. So just keep at it.

Meditation leads the mind into concentration. Not a concentration that is rigid, but a gentle sense of focus. Gentleness will pervade, next to insight and awareness. At this point, for me, after 40 years of daily practice, meditation is like drinking water. It quenches my thirst. It always feels balancing, no matter what experience I have. Each meditation is unique, but there is a fundamental sense of satisfaction and balancing of body and mind. Sitting quietly with a focused mind is balancing. A lack of it can generate anxiety both for the body and for the mind. The practice of meditation also leads to evolution. There is more to life than we know.

We reconnect with the splendor and magic of life. We gradually open to the Truth of life.

Finally!

Tanya: Yet can we call this an actual training of the mind?

Lynne: Most definitely. If the mind is scattered, acknowledge it, then take steps to focus on it. Taking those steps, focusing the mind, does involve effort, but it's a gentle one. It means that we are committed to a daily practice and accept the fact that it's a long-term project.

Then with time, with years of practice, a transformation of the mind occurs. This is my direct experience. I feel transformed every year, as are others I know who are regular meditators.

The practice of meditation is, as one of the Dalai Lama's books says, "The Art of Happiness."

Over time, meditators will become happier, lighter, more content and less anxious. So that's what happens when you meditate. It is training in peacefulness, instability. I can tell you that after many years of practice, you reach a level where the meditative state permeates the entire day. And yet, the evolution continues and that is the beauty of it. Life has its challenges, and yes, ups and down will remain as to be human means to feel. And perhaps we feel deeper as meditators, more aware. We can feel our unity with one and all, and that leads to compassion, and a sense of love and wanting to help if we can, in our own way. I believe that our potential is unlimited and I remain skeptical towards anyone who says that they have reached the end of learning, that they have attained perfection. I think that evolution goes on and that makes life wonderful.

more stable place with less buzz, less mental activity. And when your mind becomes restless again—as it inevitably will from time to time—you will have the skills acquired through meditation to gently guide it back to its more balanced state. This is considered a big step for the meditator, to have the ability to grasp your energy level and address it. The problem in our society is that people usually don't know when to stop. Their lifestyles are so overactive and busy that often they don't even realize when their mind and body need a respite. Or by the time they become aware of it, they are deeply exhausted or very anxious and stressed. Being aware enough to know when to stop, to breathe deeply and to take a few minutes in meditation could prevent many of these negative consequences. It simply makes sense to know when to relax and meditate when you need it. And every meditation has a cumulative effect, helping us to live with greater awareness and clarity. For meditation to work, just practice. Show up.

And enjoy, be patient, look at it as a process.

Tanya: Is that why people don't sleep well? Because the buzz of the day pervades the night and they can't turn it off?

Lynne: Regular meditators sleep very well. A daily practice of 15 to 20 minutes suffices to ensure a focused and rested mind, along with a solid sense of stability. These regular meditators tend to also develop the ability to take short breaks during the day to meditate when needed, an invaluable tool for preventing burnout, depression and anxiety. Meditators have their priorities straight. They value their peace of mind and understand that taking the time necessary to achieve this is not selfish, as eventually, everyone will benefit from it. An agitated mind creates discord and leads to a host of difficulties, including relationship problems, insomnia or even nightmares. In contrast, a stable mind generates balance, peace, and happiness.

The following steps can help achieve a stable mind: 1. A daily practice of meditation 2. An understanding of mind and its mechanism, and 3. A study of empowering attitudes and philosophies Meditation requires discipline and patience, particularly as progress is not always obvious. Hypnotherapy, which is a service that I also offer, provides us with quicker results, it removes blockages and can help us move forward. From there, we can start or continue meditating. Change—any change—does not happen overnight. But it is cumulative; every meditation count, even the ones we don't consider successful. When I started to meditate, I simultaneously began to work on myself spiritually, emotionally and intellectually, as that is an integral part of meditation. It wasn't always easy. But I knew, and I was always told, to never give up, to just keep at it. Eventually, I noticed that I had turned a corner, that a paradigm shift had occurred. I felt stronger. I had healed certain vulnerable aspects of my personality and had evolved to another level. To continue this process of evolution, we must keep on with our meditation practice. If need be, seek help from a therapist or a qualified coach or meditation instructor. Now the good news is that it gets more satisfying as the process deepens. Living with awareness, living mindfully makes for a fulfilling life.

Once you start meditating regularly, at times, you will become aware of the loss of balance in your mind. And at that point, you will know how to take a few minutes, or a little longer, to allow your mind to relax in a deeper way. You will achieve a higher level, a calmer,

id anyone notice that degradation of the Earth’s ecology was the catalyst for radical Climate Change? Food crops were destroyed by horrendous heat waves as carbon dioxide poured into the atmosphere. Did no one realize that food riots and world panic trace back to one cause – the economic agenda of corporations? The undercover deal between governments and multi-nationals was invested in political and economic structures that centered on the carbon combustion complex. This collective agenda destabilized world order and endangered the world’s populations. Billionaire backers protected their profits, downplayed scientific conclusions, and deliberately dulled the intelligence of the general public. They paid selected scientists to promote the position that the existing evidence on climate change does not support crisis warnings. This is a bought and sold lie! Everyone knew the lack of truth – the US government, corporations, and industrialists – all knew the truth. To keep the bottom line of profits in their favour, they were willing to accept that civilization would be destroyed in the not-sodistant future.

December 2020 signified the fifth anniversary of the Paris Climate Agreement. The UN Secretary General addressed 70 heads of states and governments. He warned that every country must declare again for an immediate climate emergency, as real progress had not been made to make the Paris agreement a reality. Antonio Guterres, the UN Secretary General, criticized rich countries for not spending the $100billion a year that had been promised. It did not happen, as climate warming since 2015 had been the warmest on record.

The balance between government and population was often seen by them as oppressive. Scientists do not yet know the full nature of the virus – its effects on the body and just how lethal it can be to different populations. Any nation decimated by such a disease cannot expect to have a functioning economy, partly due to the damage that occurs to both mental and physical health.

From global health, pandemic, climate emergency to racial injustice – 2020 severely tested humanity’s resilience. The brilliant indigenous response from Robin Wall Kimmerer’s Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge and the Teachings of Plants (2020), is very clear.

“What was needed was the wisdom of environmental science, the clarity of philosophical analysis and the creative power of the written word, to find new ways to understand and reimagine our relation to the natural world. (283) We seem to be living in an era of economics of fabricated demand and compulsive overconsumption….we continue to embrace economic systems that prescribe infinite growth on a finite planet…..we need reforms that would ground economics in ecological principles and the constraints of thermodynamics. (300) Climate change will unequivocally defeat economics that are based on constant taking without giving in return. (363)”

She felt that the key to all this was clarifying and accepting the higher purpose: to free her into being more present to herself.

Our next session revealed that her heart was anxious that if she was present to herself in her purpose, she would then be susceptible to dark interference. This anxious self wanted her to remain selfprotective and cautious but was blocking her inner clarity and focus.

Indeed, an entity was taking advantage of her sense of powerlessness and defeat that stopped her from believing in herself. Once it was released, her heart softened, and her breath became calmer again.

But witnessing the causation timeline was pivotal: she had been so dedicated to her cause in the past that she had lost her connection with herself and couldn’t find a way to put her own inner core Spirit first. This was now the time to reclaim her power, believe in herself, embody her Christ consciousness.

Still, her heart persisted. It wanted to be acknowledged as her guide through life. This was set aside as a child when she was encouraged to never follow her heart but to use her brain. It wanted to be nurtured now with gentleness and respect. Only this would ease Diedre’s core worry about not having the ability to fulfill her purpose: if she put her own heart front and centre, the rest would all fall into place. Her inner child felt more hopeful.

Diedre moved closer to her heart each time we brought healing to her through the AoA Hieros Gamos System consciousness technology. It’s highly precise and intelligent in clearing multiple influences, such as attachments, ancestral blockages, and implants. She also participated actively with her consciousness to discipline the ego and its patterns that had dominated her Spirit for years: inherited defeatist beliefs like “I can’t do this” and “I don’t know,” and feelings of mission failure from other lives.

Introduction to Unity: The Power of Order

P

erhaps the best way to introduce the Power of Order is to remember a time when things were not in order.

Think back to a time when your work/life balance was in turmoil and you were feeling overwhelmed and on the verge of burnout or, perhaps more recently, you are bored with so much time off. In such times of disorder, we can turn away from outer appearances, and imagine our lives as beautiful paths, a journey of discovery and joy.

Order is the framework, the architecture of life. One plus one is always two. Spring always follows winter. Order is built into every aspect of life. As it says in Ecclesiastes 3-1-2:

• My life is balanced and in order, and all is well.

For everything there is a season and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born and a time to die; a time to plant and a time to pluck up what is planted.

When experiencing negative events, many of us rationalize them by attributing them to “God’s will.” In Unity we do not believe that God is a superhuman being who imposes order.

Rather we believe that God is order, the organizing principle we see in the pattern and sequence inherent in all of life and an integrated arrangement of energy in a pattern, sequence or method. We call on the Power of Order to enact the sequence in which, first, we have Mind (the essential Oneness often referred to as God, or divine energy, the universe, etc.); then we experience an idea in our Mind; lastly, using our imagination, faith, wisdom, etc. we develop that idea until it manifests into our experience.

According to Linda Martella-Whitsett, “the order we sense and experience in the natural world is a material representation of spiritual order [which in turn] is the underlying and

Let’s face it, today more than ever, health is a topic of concern. We take precautions to avoid exposure to others and to mitigate our risk of contracting coronavirus by wearing masks, social distancing, staying home and following guidelines and protocols when out in public.

We do this because we don’t want to get ourselves or others sick.

What is health? To have good health is to be free of illness or injury, to be able to adequately cope with the demands of life, and to maintain a state of equilibrium with yourself and your environment.

When we are in a state of good health our quality of life increases dramatically. We are able to utilize our bodies without pain, experience natural energy, and enjoy feelings like joy and happiness.

One of the factors that influences our health the most is diet. The foods that you eat make a measurable impact on the condition of your health.

By eating healthy, wholesome and nutritious foods you give your body the building blocks it needs to fortify healthy cells and smooth bodily functions.

Just as important are the things that we avoid eating as part of our diet, refined sugars being the deadliest. Additives, processed ingredients, unhealthy fats, and unnatural sugars are problems for our bodies to flush out the best it can. Too much of these harmful items result in extra weight, clogged arteries and decreased ability to regulate blood sugar.

Today I’d like you to draw the mental connection between your healthy eating and your good health. By sticking with it you will take measurable strides towards claiming better health.

This means having a stronger immune system that’s ready and able to fight off viruses.

So please add good health to your list of reasons for exercising and instilling healthy eating habits to last you a lifetime.

Inner Drive & Spiritual Growth Spurts by: Diane Oliver

W

e understand growth spurts as the episodes in our younger years that were uncomfortable. The body going through massive changes at adolescence is one of them.

As an adult you are glad that the teens and their awkwardness are over. You hope never to have to go through that again!

As an adult, you discover that emotional and mental growth continues. You experience heartbreak on one hand and happiness on the other. You are always having to figure out how to adjust to these major changes. You want to hold onto the feelings of happiness and completion.

Yet we’re human-beings. We are compelled to move forward. Just like Nature, we cannot stay stagnant. We learn to define ourself according to our achievements and social status.

However, one day, this is no longer enough – getting more “things”, looking for that next love-connection, the next promotion - does not satisfy this sense of hunger that you are feeling.

It’s something you don’t understand. There must be something wrong with you. Why do you feel like the light went out of your gist?

When this happens, it is possible, that you are experiencing a “Spirit-Essence” (soul) growth spurt! Whereas the body stops growing in the early 20’s, the Spirit-Essence never does.

Whereas the physical brain likes to follow the path of least resistance, your Spirit-Essence thrives on change and excellence.

The Physical-Essence thrives on “things”, the Spirit-Essence thrives on making you discover who you are and what makes you unique, better.

This inner-drive has been with you all your life. It’s what got you motivated to figure out how to turn on your back as an infant, how to talk, walk, run, jump, climb as a toddler. It’s what got you through adolescence.

It’s like going through adolescence again – the dolls and toy cars no longer served your growth. Similarly, you come into the awkward stage of having to figure out where your innerdrive needs to take you next. Just as you were learning how to use your inner resources to create your individuality as a youth, the same is being asked of you again.

When heart-strings are pulled, your inner resources are coming to the front of your life. Rather than following the path of least resistance, you are being asked to consciously work with your inner-drive to create a more fulfilling life.

There is nothing wrong with you. This is simply yet another growth spurt – one that will come again as you age. We call them “identity-crisis” but truly, it is simply a Spirit/Soul growth spurt into higher consciousness. It’s not easy.

Once you go through it, you will have a more fulfilling life until you need new topsoil again in order to accommodate new seeds for renewal and greater growth. You are compelled to change. You need to find a new way of looking at things.

We sometimes believe we are going through mental health issues because very few understand the make-up of a SpiritEssence growth spurt. How to deal with it and consciously grow with your Spirit-Essence as an ally, is my niche.

Be patient with yourself. Change is inevitable and contrary to popular belief it is a very healthy and necessary thing!

It is asking you if you would replace and heal the “old ways of being” in order to adopt those that would make you better today. It is an invitation to raise your level of consciousness.

A world filled with anxiety

T

he world is a different place right now, like nothing we have experienced before. Covid-19 has taken the world by storm by shutting down workplaces, retail stores, schools, etc. We were paralyzed with fear of the unknown in early 2020, we moved to a feeling of acceptance in mid 2020 as the first wave subsided and vaccines were manufactured to a feeling of anger at the end of 2020 when we had to stay away from our Christmas gatherings. Now, we are in 2021 with Covid-19’s second wave upon us and we are living unknowns about when we can travel, when kids can return to school, when we can hug our families.

Fear, anger, and unknowns lead us to feelings of anxiousness. Right now, we are limited from going to the gym, going out with friends, going to our families and maybe even going out to work and these are likely the very things that we previously used to deal with our anxiety.

One important element of dealing with our anxiety is the ability to keep our minds focused and calm. Once we can do that, we have a chance of staying in the moment, practice mindfulness and reduce our anxiety. Sometimes, staying focused and in the moment is easy but other times it feels impossible.

Sending Love by: Tony Gyenis

C

ovid -19 has been a difficult imposition in our lives, not only for what we are unable to do, but for its harshness of taking away our ability to express love. Love is a fundamental emotion for humans as it is the origin of our decisions, our actions, and our experiences. Since this pandemic, this virus has denied us the need for us to express our love and put loss in the forefront. However, February being the month of love, we can make strides to allow the love within us to reach all those we care about, we just need an alternate way to do it.

Meditation is a powerful exercise used to strengthen our connection to our higher self. The benefits have been documented and observed by many. The subtle practice of stillness with rhythmic breathing can be accounted for stronger heart and clearer mind. If the benefits can be so powerful for our selves, then the benefit can be transcended to another as well.

We have spoken before on the need to have permission from another person to do a reading or healing for them, but we are free to send love to others without their permission. Why the difference? When one sends love to another it is energy sent with divine intention and can be transformed by the other person as their energy decides. In contrast, if healing or insight is sent to another without the person’s permission, that energy goes to the person piercing their aura, and can cause unrest in the recipient’s energy. But love, well it is the essence of all our energy driven not by the senders needs but by the recipient’s needs.

So, though the pandemic has distanced us from those we wish to hold, hug and love, we are not any further from those close to us energetically. Our energy is still connected to those we love even if we are not physically close to the other person. This then means that love can be sent to all those you care about. Here are some tips to help guide your meditation toward sending love to another person: • Find a token that reminds you of the person you are wanting to send love to. This could be a scarf your grandma knit for you or a photo of your good friend.

• Set the intention for the meditation you wish to send love to the person for their energy to decided how to best use it • Give yourself time to settle into deep breathing, peace and let your mind gravitate toward that person. As you start your meditation, think thoughts of the person. Do not force it but allow it.

• If you find yourself straining your thoughts, focus on your breath and slow it down.

• Continue to hold the object of the person. The universe will signal to you that connection is made when your physical body experiences sensations. This could be tingling, runny nose or feelings of warmth or cold. This is a sign that love is leaving your aura and reaching out.

• Once you come out of the mediation, continue to hold onto the object. Thank the universe for the opportunity and reaffirm your intention of sending love. Ask the universe to let you know that they received it.

Though it may take a few tries to master the practice, you will notice the person to whom you sent love will reach out to you confirming they felt the gentle tapping on their shoulder of your energy. Let this be a confirmation to you that despite all we are experiencing, we are never so far that we cannot send love.

Your Goals are Set, Now What?

2021 has begun, you’ve set your goals for the year, now what?

How are you going to ensure you set those financial goals in your business?

Be bold in 2021 and write down those financial goals - break them down quarterly, monthly, weekly and if you really want to be focused, daily! To be on target you got to know your numbers.

Before you dive into determining if you have been making a profit, write out your vision and mission - this is important as it needs to excite you, making you unstoppable. Look at it every day!

Let’s look at your current numbers! Are you making a profit on the goods and services you provide? Make a list of the costs involved in providing those products and services (“doing your business” ). Include the costs of any subcontracted services. What about Virtual Assistants, software and apps? expenses involved in “running your business”. Check your Credit card statements, PayPal and your bank account, anything going OUT of your accounts must be accounted for. The totals on these two lists is the start to identifying if you are making a profit.

This is your break even point.

Next, total your sales (without any HST) (this can be done easily by adding up the deposits in your business bank account), divide it by 12 to get the monthly amount. Deduct your average monthly expenses, how do you fair out? This number can be scary, but it can also give you a wake up call to stop guessing what to charge.

OH BUT WAIT, DON’T FORGET YOU STILL HAVE TAXES TO PAY ON THAT!!

Using the CRA the payroll calculator, choosing the monthly pay period, estimate your taxes and CPP (as a sole proprietor you are exempt from EI.) Using this monthly net income calculated, from the Net Pay deduct the CPP amount again (as a sole proprietor you have to pay the “employer” share too) - that new amount is an estimate of what you get to keep.

Take that beautiful goal number you chose, break it down monthly. How close are you??

Love Your Body Love Your Life! by: Penny Lee Prevost

One of the mantras that we value at Nia Technique is “Love your body, love your life!”

W

hen I think about this, I feel this is underestimated in our society today. With the increase of anxiety and depression, I believe that more and more people are feeling disconnected from their bodies. This statement is much more important today because we only have one body or vessel that we as spirit beings have the privilege to navigate through this life with - until death do us part. It is, therefore, the most important relationship we have to nurture—our own body’s way.

With February being the “LOVE” month, I would like to suggest making time to do something special to celebrate the “LOVE” for your own body. Start with writing a love letter to yourself with gratitude for everything your body can do for you.

You might find it to be quite long, or at least I would hope it is for your own body’s sake. There are so many things that our body does for us that we take for granted, like simply breathing!

Next, let’s find ways to maintain and/or increase your vitality and value. I invite you to explore dancing through life your own body’s way. Yes, dancing is considered an exercise. However, I believe it should not be something that is forced upon our body, causing pain and discomfort after a workout. I see exercise as something that is a movement based on our own body’s way, which is a much more natural, pleasant and fun way to move our body. Dancing has been around since the dawn of time. A natural way to move our body to the rhythm of the music to express ourselves and to celebrate the life force (spirit) within us.

The Nia Technique barefoot cardio dance practise not only improves your body’s mobility, agility, flexibility, stability and strength; it also improves your brain function on many levels. There are many studies that show how dancing improves focused thinking and memory. The Little-Known Solution to Overcoming Insomnia by: Hilary Samuel

I

t is possible to enjoy blissful sleep night after night, to wake up feeling refreshed and alert.

If you suffer from insomnia, you can get great sleep. It’s just that what you have been trying so far hasn’t worked.

If you suffer from insomnia, you probably think you have “tried everything” to overcome it. You have probably tried various remedies such as melatonin, herbal teas and perhaps cannabis. You have probably tried relaxation methods. You might have tried hypnotherapy. There are literally hundreds of products out there purported to resolve sleeplessness. Although all these methods can enhance sleep to varying degrees, they don’t cut it with insomnia. The reason why is that they don’t solve the problem at root cause.

The secret to overcoming insomnia is actually hidden in your mind and habits regarding sleep.

The key to making sense of this statement is to consider how you got stuck in the quicksand of insomnia in the first place. Usually, insomnia starts with an event that disrupts sleep. Pretty well everybody experiences this at some time in their lives. It could be a stressful event or even a positive experience, something exciting. Whatever it is, it activates the mind and body, making it difficult to drop off to sleep.

Sometimes this pattern of difficulty with sleep continues. The mind and body can’t settle down. It continues for the next week. And continues some more. After a month or two of this, the situation starts to feel alarming.

That’s when sleeplessness starts to turn into a vicious cycle.

That is when the sleeplessness itself starts to become the source of stress. At this point you are now AFRAID OF NOT BEING ABLE TO SLEEP. Now you have chronic insomnia. You start trying to sleep. This serves to keep you awake, because sleep is surrender, sleep it is letting go. When you try to sleep and find yourself tossing and turning night after night, you lose that ability to let go. You unlearn sleep.

I myself experienced this situation years ago after making a choice away from my soul-path. I found myself unable to sleep and I endured this situation for years. Finally, I had an insight that changed everything; it was that I had unlearned sleep – so the solution was to relearn sleep.

Becoming a good sleeper again is about relearning sleep. It is about teaching your body to relax at night – rather than tense up. It is about teaching your mind to think differently so that you are not recreating insomnia night after night. It is about teaching your body that bed is a haven, it is safe, it is restful.

Relearning sleep is about emerging from the maze that your mind has created for itself in the form of thinking patterns and habits.

Luckily, the process of relearning sleep has been developed, packaged and put to the test of hundreds of clinical trials. It is called CBTI (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia). The process of relearning sleep is guided by a professional trained in the art and science of CBTI. CBTI is essentially a sleep training program and involves practicing tools to shift your mindset around sleep and developing new sleep habits. The process usually takes several months.

The downside of CBTI is that it’s not about just popping a pill and being done with it. Being successful with it requires some dedication.

It is not an “easy” solution. But easy hasn’t worked so far, has it? It takes some effort to relearn sleep.

Community by: Ana Ideias

W

hat is community? It is much more than just where you live, or groups that you may belong to. As a Realtor, I see it as a much bigger thing. I understand the importance of loving where you live, the people in your neighbourhood, the green spaces around you, or the local business that you like to support. Community is such a big part of loving where you live. Community makes us feel like we belong, that we have a tribe, that we have people connected to us to help us through challenging times. We seek to find communities where people have the same passions, the same interests, the same outlook on life. Maybe your communities include sports groups, places of worship, music, art, business, leisure activities, etc. The communities we can build are endless and are only limited by our imagination.

Community has changed so much. Back in the day, you were more likely to live, work, and raise a family in the same place you were born. People had the support of extended family near by. Now with the freedom that technology affords us, we move away. We move away from friends and family to places where we may not have any support. I moved to Ottawa 26 years ago when I got married. We had no family or friends here, but we understood the importance of feeling like we belonged, so we began to build our own community. I now have such an incredible community of support.

With modern technology, I feel we have slowly migrated to an online world. We can buy pretty much anything online and get it delivered the next day. Some things have become very impersonal. When is the last time you went to a bank? We can send flowers, order food, and attend university all from the comfort of our home. This is so convenient for sure, but I think it can also rob us of the opportunity to connect with others. This is what I miss the most.

But, and a big BUT, the ability to connect with others virtually, especially in the world we find ourselves living in now, has been critical.

We are learning to re-connect with others and our environment virtually and that is such a blessing. It is not the same as getting together to celebrate a birthday or going to a hockey game, but we can still connect with our communities.

For businesses that were deemed essential, (real estate included), we have had to think outside the box so that we can still help and guide our communities. 2020 was a really challenging year for so many people, especially small business owners. We, as realtors, have also adapted the way we do business to ensure our clients are safe while buying or selling their home. We do more things virtually now, use electronic signatures, meet on zoom calls, etc.

For me, community includes what I have around me to make me feel connected, especially during these really trying Covid times. Being out in nature is how I fill my cup. My community includes all our diverse neighbourhoods, the woods, the river, and the many paths we have here in Ottawa to get out to explore. My tribe are full of amazing people from all walks of life, with diverse interests, and passions. We help each other learn, grow, prosper, and be the best version of ourselves.

Community is more and more important today. Let’s reach out and support those we know may be having a tough time right now.

y passion is working with families who have a child or children who have ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder or Asperger’s, helping them to have a more resilient and flexible mindset and to more through their world with more flow.

Neurofeedback is particularly helpful for children on the autism spectrum. Scientists at the University of South Carolina have been studying the role of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) in autistic children for fifteen years and have found that the fight or flight response in the ANS is overactive in autistic children, which supports reports that autistic children often experience anxiety. When I describe what’s happening in a nervous system that is vibrating too high or is overactive, I talk about it being like a child’s insides, and sometimes outside, feels prickly or irritated much of the time. It takes a lot of energy to manage that feeling of prickliness, and as a day wears on, the amount of energy available to respond appropriately to external events, tasks and requests from others decreases exponentially.

The result is often either a meltdown or further withdrawal into him/herself.

I

’m Sew-Psyched to share a thing or two about the fashion industry, specifically because I am a local seamstress who is aiming to bring more awareness through my work by promoting the importance of recycling and upcycling! My name is Miranda, & I have a small business out of home called Sew-Psyched on Cummings Ave. They say that the first impression is the most important...

But the culture of consumerism/materialism has manipulated us to be so invested in how we look that we almost always overlook how this culture creates a monstrous footprint of pollution in an industry most of us know nothing about. For example, did you know that 15.1 million tons of textile clothing waste were produced in 2013 alone? Did you know 65% of the Fashion being produced these days is made with synthetic fibres, which take hundreds of years to biodegrade? It is an impact that is exponentially horrifying when we think about the welfare of the people working in these industries, the factory-farmed animals used for their skin and fur, and in the end, the pollution on mother earth. Fast Fashion is the culprit I am focusing on. One of the many industries that violate human rights, in these little pockets of places called free trade zones. Free Trade Zones will go as far as paying women a bonus for being sterilized so that they will not get pregnant and thus be able to continue working the overtime they typically work without disruptions. The toy and many other industries all have their profitable sins... Our responsibility as a common people is to never stop learning different ways to reverse and eventually subdue these monstrosities and luckily finally it does seem that more people are choosing local, fair trade, organic, nonGMO, second hand, DIY, repurposing, and upcycling methods! & We are seeing these things being taught in classrooms too, teaching the next generations how to be more mindful. This way we can at least concentrate on our own communities. If we can’t smash the multi-billion dollar corporations that control a big part of our world, We can at the very least bring awareness, and with time, more positive sustainable steps close to home, instead of negative impacts from either ignorance or carelessness.

T

here are more and more people suffering from everyday symptoms including the inability to fall asleep, difficulty staying asleep, waking up and not feeling refreshed and lack of focus. We know that chronic stress plays havoc on our adrenals, ( our ‘fight or flight’ response).

With the constant stress we experience every day, we need that extra something that helps us feel happy and energized. Our “happy hormones”, namely endorphins, need a boost! Reflexology can improve mood, by generating endorphins, The production of “happy hormones”, through reflexology can be accomplished by massaging the Reflexology point for the adrenal glands. With time, as life energy is rebuilt, the physical body heals and recuperates.

The reflexology point for the adrenals is found just above the Kidney point found on the soles of each of your feet and on your hands.

Using the knuckle of your index finger, press the point and then twist your wrist back and forth in a way that looks like you’re turning a door knob.

Massage this point for a good 15 to 30 seconds at a time, and gradually move up to 2 minutes a day. Try to massage the area at least two to three times a week.

Using essential oils will add to the benefits of this massage. The following oils will benefit different issue: Inflammation: Myrrh, Frankincense.

Fatigue: Basil, Eucalyptus, Geranium » Hair Loss: Rosemary, Cedarwood, Thyme, Lavender » Weight Gain: Grapefruit, Lemon, Peppermint » Allergies: Eucalyptus, Lavender, Ginger » Muscle Weakness: Marjoram, Vetiver, Basil, Cypress, Yarrow, Nutmeg, Sandalwood » Decreased Libido: Ylang ylang, Jasmine, Rose, Vetiver » Sleeping Troubles: Lavender, Roman chamomile, Neroli, Jasmine, Marjoram » Poor focus: Lavender, Bergamot, Geranium, Sandalwood, Peppermint

Morning routine with essential oils: During your morning shower, rub the area around your lower back with a washcloth to activate the adrenals. After a bit of massage in that area, turn your back away from the water and then massage a few drops of diluted oils in the same area. Massage and breathe deeply as the aroma fills your shower. This will give a natural energy boost to your morning.

Evening Routine with Essential Oils: A warm bath, warm forehead compress, or heated neck wrap with a few essential oils is perfect to calm and soothe your system and cue your relaxation response.

Final note Fatigue and lack of energy is such a multi-faceted problem. You have to dig deep to find out the deeper causes. Only then you will be able to overcome fatigue, feel energetic and push yourself to achieve your goals.

If you dabble in too many things, yet derive happiness from none, you will gradually feel distressed and dejected, unable to rise above daily problems and distresses find that happiness just seems elusive, reflexology may help you find a way to overcome all kinds of negative energies and find a positive mindset.

Positivity can help you beat most of your blues.

Three Ways to Boost Your Mood During Covid

M

any people are suffering from anxiety, depression, and stress during these last few months so if finding ways to feel better is on your list, give it a try. You are not alone, and it affects adults and children all over the world. You may already be doing one or more, but I am here to assist my clients to feel better, one day at a time, and working with Trauma is my work. February can be a grey month as we all wait for spring to return, but only if we allow it. Shifting your attention to other things, hobbies, walking, crafts all can lift your spirits.

Some areas this can help with are.

• Depression • Anger • Anxiety • Trauma • Grief/Sadness 1) WRITE 50 things that have had a Positive outcome during your life, starting with your childhood. We often overlook the good in things in life while we are feeling bad or if we have cabin fever.

2) MAKE it a daily habit to go for a walk outdoors around the block or anywhere you will notice things that are different from your living room. Notice the architecture, of the buildings, notice the birds, notice a tree that may have a design in the bark.

There are so many things to see if we make it something more than walking.

3) BREATHE deeply with a pattern that will allow your body to take in fresh oxygen to your entire system, which calms the body after really focusing on each inhale and exhale. Sit comfortably and be aware of how you breath. Be aware of your feelings on a 1 -10.

Breathe • Inhale to the count of 4.

• Hold to the count of 7.

• Exhale (big whooshing sound) out to the count of 8.

• Repeat 3 more times.

Feel the change. Go back and check in to see how you feel 1 -10 Doing this at least twice a day can make a difference. Some clients use it before going to sleep, just clear the mind of all the garbage and concentrate on the breathing.
