“To have a friend you need to be a friend.” A very wise statement!

Most people are hoping that superb friends will just walk right into their lives. They do not seem to realize that deep relationships, like plants, require developing, nurturing, fertilizing, growing and “weeding”. They avoid negotiating emotional and stylistic differences with their closest companions. Eventually this leads to very stale relationships or to the end of any meaningful relationships.

Many of the couples that I counsel/coach with reach a plateau in their relationship in which they stop emotionally growing with each other. Sometimes one person reaches a plateau and sometimes both of them stall emotionally. This is usually an indication that the couple or one person in the couple has basically ceased growing in self-love, self worth and self esteem.

exploration. It feels like a timeless and extraordinary experience. Infinitely soft, pure and perfect. It was so deeply serene, truly peaceful. No words can describe the depth, lucidity and simplicity of everything that was said and felt. The critical mind had vanished.

I woke up, and at first, I just thought to myself, oh I dreamed about my friend last night. Then the details of the dream returned.

or this issue of Tone, I thought to share with you a dream that I had on September 12th, 2020, for it felt like a blessing, and it remains to me deeply inspiring: I am walking on a wide, golden, earthy path, a type of country road, wide enough for a car to drive on. I am a pure spirit and am walking with a dear friend of mine who is here also as a pure spirit. We have no human forms, but our spirits are clearly identifiable and I know she is her and she knows it is me next to her. On my left is a row of emerald green high fluffy trees, forming a wall following this road, parallel to it. This natural environment may be to mimic life on earth, as it felt unreal. I am walking or moving along this road with my friend, and she, or her spirit, is to my right. It feels like we are walking, though we have no legs, no body as such. The energy field surrounding us is of an impeccable peacefulness, a calmness unknown to us on earth. It is gentle and so tranquil, so relaxing, and it feels utterly natural. It is absolutely devoid of the weight of the human mind, its concerns, ideas, tendencies to judge or criticize.

Freed from the human mind’s habit to criticize and doubt, we experienced a totality of peace unknown to us on earth. It was an utterly exquisite experience.

There is absolutely no separation between her and I. I am her, and she is me.

Though as me I can talk with her, while simultaneously being one. The gentleness experienced is remarkable. It is one based on shared identity, a complete, simple, sense of Oneness. She is looking down to her right, gazing into space, somewhat lost in her past, analyzing her life on earth, curiously, objectively, non-judgmentally. She is looking at the lessons she learned and the choices she made. It feels like she had just died, and I had passed a while back before her; as such, I was able to greet and guide her. I am completely attentive, and she is in a deep exploration of the trials and tribulations she had on earth. However, from that level, everything is seen as perfect. She is very focused, though just curious, and I am sharing in her

I am left transformed by this experience. It enhanced what I intuitively know, that we are on earth to learn and that whatever experience we have serves a purpose. Everything that we experience may just not be what it appears to be. I could feel from that level of insightfulness how short our time on earth is. I could also feel the utter liberation that occurs when judgments disappear. We tend to judge ourselves, and others as it is human nature to do so. Yet the highest Truth transcends judgements.

To go beyond the human mind and its array of insecurities, it’s constant habit to judge, enables us to taste the power of Truth and to reach a subtler or higher level of awareness.

I find that meditation helps in this regard. To work on releasing blockages we may have, helps as well; without a doubt, it releases energy. In this way we can return to our Truth, return to Peacefulness. If you need guidance to release blockages, if you wish to move forward and can use a helping hand, feel free to contact me.

THE POWERFUL TRANSFORMATIONS ARISING OUT OF I AM HERE TO BE HAPPY!

A

ll of us can truly benefit from engaging with these words each day. I can assure you, that after three decades as a Seeker of Truth, following the Sufi Path of the Heart, I have landed back here over and over, as a way to live life well. The truth is, the more you seek, the more you realize that living life fully and welcoming Happiness is the key to an amazing life journey. The spiritual path can help you navigate this, but it will not make you happy unless you help yourself to be so.

There is nothing more powerful than giving your mind the healthiest of boundaries. Like anything else, the mind needs parameters to feel safe and work well. To say each day, I AM HERE TO BE HAPPY, is not only a wonderful idea, but it is an energy transformation tool. It is the difference between just watching water flow, to letting it fall into your cup, and drink.

If you were to say, ‘I want to be happy’, this will actually lead to a lack of happiness, as it tells the mind that you are still waiting for that happiness, through the ‘want’. Acknowledging the difference between what you want and the strong affirming idea of being ‘here’, now, in the present, to be happy, can make an enormous difference in your life. It is marvelous to give your mind the guidance it needs.

You could say, I AM HAPPY, but it is always a good idea to remind yourself where you are, so be clear that you are HERE. When your mind is reminded of your presence, it commits to being here, which is great for you, as it drives your life and it asserts and affirms your continued happy life on earth.

Can we always expect to be happy? An expectation of that level would be quite an achievement for sure. So, it is easier just to ‘Trust’ the intention towards happiness. Gradually you will see the adjustments that are supporting you while you grow into your Happy state. An amazing safe and secure feeling, coming from the energy of creation, will hold you strong as you make these adjustments. You will not suffer to the same degree that so many do.

Issues within you will arise, but you will be in a better mind set and literally feel more in control. Allow this process to unfold and you will see how life really is about moving energy towards being Happy, and what a life it will be!

Try taking a full day of saying this statement, ‘I AM HERE TO BE HAPPY’. Repeat it in your mind wherever you are. If you want to say it out loud, you can do that too. Your energy will change either way. You may very well feel sparks of happiness begin right away or it may take a couple of hours or a few days.

The subtle energies will alter and you will begin not only to feel that lightness that we seek as spiritual beings, but you will also notice that you start to address your daily life with greater awareness.

Indeed, your consciousness will excel because you are committed to reorganizing all your energy with one simple statement.

So often we have to go through some suffering to be capable of waking our self up to new levels of consciousness. This statement will start waking you up gently, and the parts of you that have been dormant, stagnant, or significantly blocked will come back to flow.

It is a marvelous easy way to move out your discomforts.

The Essential Spiral by: Ian Prattis

My 2002 book – The Essential Spiral: Ecology and Consciousness After 9/11 - was written as a text for my television course on Ecology and Culture, which re-considers how our modern culture relates to its environment. After the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, I could no longer write this book in the way I had planned. The new environment that all cultures have to adapt to is one framed by fear, uncertainty, hatred and fanaticism. At no time in history has the lucidity of the peacemakers been more important. I propose a meditative base for activism and renewal as the re-creation of our world requires a radical change in direction which involves shifts in human consciousness. The Essential Spiral insists that Ecology and Consciousness are inseparable, akin to the double helix of DNA. To separate the double helix eliminates life. The same portent applies to Ecology and Consciousness. Students at Carleton University were required to read this book and many became environmental activists.

The Essential Spiral combines facts from the sciences, politics, and spirituality to present a realistic road map for a gradual transformation of community-based capitalism and personal awareness. Prattis has done a commendable job of outlining a sustainable ecosystem and providing meditative exercises that will strengthen the compassionate resolve for the next generation of political leadership."

The terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 changed the world.

Terror seizes the mind, our deepest fears amplify it. Wise teachings about the mind bring spiritual warriors to the fore, to champion peace, environmental care and non-violent reconciliation. I'll never forget the moment - 3 years ago- watching a YouTube video of a lady with balance issues secondary to Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Rebecca Naylor, a wellness coach for others with MS, put on our wearable neurotech and boom! She was able to do a lunge without falling over. No easy feat when one is suffering with the debilitating effects of MS. In her demo, Rebecca proceeded to remove the technology and was then again unable to successfully perform a lunge. What the heck. My sister had MS - I HAD to find out more!

I immediately signed on to be an independent rep for the company. As a retired registered nurse, I was missing my role in acute care hospital nursing. Once I became a company rep, however, I was delighted to find I had a role to play in wellness and in falls prevention! Even better as perhaps I'd save someone from being admitted to the hospital!

Over the last three years, I have been able to help people with pain issues, balance and strength issues, attention and focus issues, sleep problems. Until COVID hit, I proudly shared our neurotech in 3 local hospitals in Ottawa and other local health fairs. You will also find me, however, on social media or at the end of my phone!

et me introduce myself as a recovered addict who has suffered from abandonment, anxiety, stress and depression longer than I care to admit. It took the bottom of the bottle and total devastation to find myself at the mercy of a treatment centre for drug and alcohol abuse. The journey has been an eight-year uphill battle with peace and joy, and happiness. "Today," it wasn't the case until I learned about a higher power and positive self-talk. I say positive because most of my life, it was Negative self Talk.

In our world today, I felt this topic to be the most valuable with all that is going on. From the time we wake until we sleep, self-talk is with us. Using it in a positive manner is the difference between a good life and a miserable one. When I wake up, my first thoughts are of gratitude, thanking God for another day filled with good and not so good moments.

Dealing today on a positive note can bring joy and happiness as opposed to looking at all that is wrong, from the crazy driver in front of me to the marketing salesmen on the phone four times a day. In treatment I used to have cards that I would write, " my sobriety is in trouble when;..... But my response will be; ... For example, I could be angry at that driver who is brake happy, or I could be calm and think maybe that person had an accident lately. Maybe they are nervous. Positive response. Caring. " That Stupid... Salesmen on the phone ?!;:&. Or everyone is trying to put food on their table. It's his job! " Even if I don't want the service. Just say no, thank you. Have a great day. :) Smile, and the whole world will smile with.

So if you are feeling anxious, stressed, and the whole world seems dark; try a little positive self talk. Give yourself a break.

HEALTHY LIFESTYLE, HEALTHY IMMUNITY Dr. Julek Meissner, Homeopath, ND (Retired)

e all want to feel well, especially during this pandemic. Our immune system is what protects us from viral and bacterial infections. Healthy lifestyle choices can optimize the function of our immune system. Self-care methods using nutrition, exercise and other lifestyle choices lower incidence of infection, lessen severity of symptoms, and shorten the duration of common colds, flus and even Covid 19.

Nutrients enhance the immune response A recent study of Vit D and Covid showed that a deficiency was associated with a higher risk of death. The study demonstrates an association between Vit D deficiency and severity/mortality of Covid 19. It highlights the need for interventional studies on Vit D supplementation during this pandemic.

In another recent study, it was shown that in late and life threatening forms of Covid, intravenous Vitamin C in high doses as an adjunctive medical treatment of Covid 19 can be helpful.

Glutathione is one of the body’s most important and potent antioxidants. A study has shown a link between glutathione deficiency and serious manifestation and death in COVID-19 patients. Sulphur-rich foods, such as fish and meat, but including veggies like broccoli, kale, cauliflower and watercress have increased glutathione levels.

Finally, various trials concluded that taking zinc soon after the onset of symptoms of the common cold significantly reduces both the duration and severity of symptoms.

Exercise for health Research into exercise immunology include acute and chronic effects of exercise on the immune system, and clinical benefits of the exercise–immune relationship. During moderate- and vigorous-intensity aerobic exercise bouts of less than 60 min duration, the antipathogen activity of tissue macrophages occurs in parallel with an enhanced recirculation of immunoglobulins, anti-inflammatory cytokines, neutrophils, cytotoxic T cells, and immature B cells, all of which play critical roles in immune defense activity and metabolic health.

Mindfulness meditation, stress and ageing It has long been known that stress weakens the immune system. For instance, medical students' immunity diminished during exam time. A comprehensive examination of data from 1602 participants revealed tentative evidence that mindfulness meditation is associated with positive changes in immune system activity, including immune cell ageing.

Homeopathy for upper respiratory tract infections What medical approach we use to help ourself is a lifestyle choice. Because of excessive use of antibiotics, there is growing fear of the formation of superbugs and antibiotic-resistance. As a result, there is increasing interest in the identification and evaluation of alternative therapies such as homeopathy for upper respiratory tract infections.

Oscillococcinum is a patented, commercially available homoeopathic medicine. The medicine is manufactured from wild duck heart and liver, a wellknown reservoir for influenza viruses. Studies show that Oscillococcinum probably reduces the duration of illness in patients presenting with influenza symptoms.

Once a cold is fully developed however, one of over 100 homeopathic remedies could be indicated, depending on how you experience it. For instance, if your flu symptoms come on slowly, and you're feeling dopy and exhausted, barely able to move or walk, you might need Gelsemium. If there is a pain in your body as if your bones were all being broken, you may need Eupatorium perfoliatum. If, on the other hand, your pains are worse with motion, and you're feeling extremely irritable and thirsty, Bryonia may be your homeopathic Rx. Which Rx a person needs will depend on how they experience their cold or flu.

And yet, many of us find it challenging to believe that good can be found in everyone and in all things. This belief is easy to sustain when the sun is shining and all is well in our world. But enter some dark days and we can forget about seeing anything but not-good.

For some of us, our tendency is to highlight the bad, the wrong, the worst, forgetting that our spiritual nature naturally focuses on the good.

Love is what harmonizes us. We have within us a set point, a default point, for interpreting the people and events in our life as good. We know immediately when there is discord in our life – because we have a built-in intolerance for disharmony – and we spend great amounts of energy resolving the discord in an effort to

Love also has a unifying power. This is our capacity for communion, empathy, belonging and compassionate service. When we can see ourselves in another, we are experiencing the magnificent Power of Love. Without that Power, we experience separateness.

From Albert Einstein: “Our separation of each other is an optical illusion of consciousness.” And, again from Erich Fromm, “The experience of separateness ... is the source of all [our] anxiety.”

The Freedom of Knowing Your Eternal Self

o truly feel free you have to know who you are and of what you’re capable as a Divine being. You’re Eternal. Our focus has to move to healing and the truth about Life.

Yet, depending on childhood and societal messages that you received, you may have learned that Life belongs only to the physical world and that what transpires while you’re in the body all expires upon your death. You might believe that there’s nothing beyond the physical realm, just what is concretely provable. There’s no need for faith in the unnamable mystery of God. It would seem unsettling to perceive a reality so limited in scope, as though there is just one expression of you, alive for a short time, for the purpose of immediate satisfaction or only random experiences. Maybe this is what you came to reconcile and heal in this incarnation.

All that distortion and confusion, in the past and now, is intended to capture your Spirit. So what matters is finding your way to this: reclaiming that you’re One with God/the Creator/the Universe/Life Force. There is no separation from God – ever - not when you are in your body and not when you drop your body. If you’re willing to be with this for a while, and confront your fear of death, then you can embrace your Life. If you can remember that you’re Eternal and cherish this with all your heart, then fearlessness guides you. Love, trust and truth guides you, not what you’re told you should fear.

Your Eternal Self doesn’t leave you scrambling for answers outside of you. Your body is vastly intelligent and its healing capacity is within you. A mask is an illusion of protection. A safe vaccine is an uncertain promise. More rules are power abuses. But choosing your Life Force, your God-self, is to know freedom, security, stability and deep peace.

Alternatively, you may have perceived that God is housed in a human image and judges you for what you choose, imposing your joy and suffering. This God is separate from you. The fundamental truths of religion may have provided some grounding but the dogmatic overlays have taught you that there’s a need for an intermediary between you and your Creator. Maybe trauma caused your anger at God and your disconnection from your own inner, core Spirit. RAIN – HOW TO STAY DRY WHEN THE STORMS COME by: Chris Peacock

N

eurOptimal® Neurofeedback is the method I use to calm the nervous system so that clients can sleep and have more energy, regulate their emotions, and focus and accomplish more in a day. What I’ve learned is that NeurOptimal® will quickly bring our nervous system more into balance, and, then it’s up to us to keep it in balance, through tune-up sessions and/or combinations of other methods.

One method to help balance the nervous system is to practice mindfulness. My go to teacher for that is Tara Brach.

She teaches a practice called RAIN that helps us move from what Tara calls trance to presence. It’s about pausing when we become aware that our reactivity is increasing, or our thoughts are starting to race and shifting our attention to what’s really going on inside.

When we are in trance our minds become stuck and we can feel defended, separate, fearful, and angry.

So how does using RAIN help? RAIN gives us a method for pressing the pause button on trance so that we can begin to open to presence.

R

stands for Recognize. In this step we notice that our mind or our heart is racing and are invited to ask the question “What’s happening/going on inside me?” or “What am I believing right now?”

N

stands for Nurture. Once we have some understanding of what is really going on inside, e.g. “I’m afraid that…”, the next step is to nurture that tender place. A question to ask is, “Can I be with this with kindness? It can be as simple as putting your hand on your heart and saying something like, “It’s okay”.

After the RAIN. Tara has now added this fifth step which is taking a couple of extra minutes after the first four and letting the calm and awareness settle in.

As with any practice, RAIN is an ongoing one and changes occur over time. During this step we can ask the question “Can I be with this?” If the answer is yes, we are invited to just be with or observe the feelings, physical sensations, or thoughts we’re having and not try to change them. If the answer to the question is no, that is totally okay, it just means our system is too overwhelmed to do the practice at that time.

There will be other times when the answer is yes.

is for Investigate. This step is about being curious. Some questions to choose from are, “What’s really happening inside me right now? Where am I feeling it in my body? What am I believing about myself right now?”

www.maggiemaier.com Entrepreneurs and high achievers always have big dreams and goals. In order to be productive and successful, and to achieve those BIG goals, it takes a lot of energy. What I have noticed working in the mental health/wellness industry for over 20 years, is that many entrepreneurs and high achievers get stuck in one or more energy traps. This is how I describe the four energy traps.

The Drag Trap, is when you physically can’t get off the couch to get anything accomplished. You know you are in the Drag Trap when you feel chronically exhausted and are so frustrated because you know you should be doing more.

The Emotional Roller Coaster Trap, is when your emotions go up and down like a roller coaster. You know you are in the Emotional Roller Coaster Trap when one minute, you are feeling great and you are super productive. The next minute or day, you find yourself down, depressed and completely unproductive.

The Endless Chatter Trap, is when your inner voice is consistently negative and keeping you from achieving your goals. You might hear things like “who do you think you are”, “I will never be successful” ,“I am so unlucky” or “no matter how hard I work, I can’t seem to make the money I want!” The Endless Chatter Trap often makes us feel that we can never achieve those big goals and dreams that we have set for ourselves or in our business. You are being very judgemental and living under Covid constraints has amplified this negative chatter.

The Withdrawal Trap, is when you can’t cope with your negative feelings or what’s happening in your day to day life. You know you are in the Withdrawal Trap when you are feeling helpless, powerless and overwhelmed.

This might come from watching your business fall apart during Covid lockdown, having to lay off employees and the guilt this brings, to struggling with all of the daily tasks required to meet your business goals while caring for young children at home.

You might find yourself running to alcohol, binge eating or engaging in compulsive actions like staying super busy, sex, gambling, shopping, video gaming, or too much phone use. Anything to stop the pain you are currently feeling.

Do you recognize yourself in one or more of these energy traps?

There are 3 critical factors you need in order to escape these traps. I call this your Default Energy Accelerator (DEA). These include removing toxic chemicals, rebalancing your minerals and removing energy blockages. Here is an example. Shawn, an entrepreneur, came to me with big dreams for his company, but he was stuck in both the Drag Trap and the Emotional Roller Coaster Trap. He had several toxic metals and most of his minerals were completely unbalanced. He was also a vegetarian which means he didn’t have enough protein. After detoxifying his body and rebalancing his minerals, he now has all the energy, balance, focus and productivity to meet his ability to grow his business. Today, he and his partner are #1 in their industry in Canada.

You need all 3 of these to truly shift into productivity and achieve your big dreams and goals. If you have toxic chemicals in your body, and you don’t eliminate them, it negatively affects your concentration and focus.

Even if you increase your concentration and focus, and you decide not to get your minerals back in balance, you will run the risk of staying exhausted and unmotivated.

If you don’t remove your energy blockages, then you will continue to stay in that negative frame of mind. To achieve optimum performance and productivity, all 3 must be completed!

From Vision to Victory! by: Penny Lee Prevost

I

ntuition, gut instinct, butterflies in the belly, hearts desires, spirit trying to get your attention, you know the feeling? That strong internal nudge I eventually listened to several years ago, is what brought me to becoming “The Dancing Motivator”.

A little over 10 years ago, I stepped into the “New Year New You” weekend program that was held in a funeral home, of all places. That is where I made my commitment to LIVE LIFE TO THE FULLEST by continuing to improve and grow personally. I did this by being open to move through change in a positive way, surrounded by a community that would lift me up and help me step outside of my comfort zone. I chose to embrace the GradUit Thrivers’ philosophy and principles to prioritize time to Reflect, Reframe and Plan my abundant life, consistently.

One simple question we were asked to reflect upon got the ball rolling…... WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY? What landed on the page was a surprise to me…..DANCING, really? I was confused and not sure what to do with the answer. I came to realize, through discussions with my GradUit community, that I had longed to take dance when I was a little girl, however I never did because I followed the path of active team sports instead.

Unfortunately, I chose to ignore the strong desire of dancing and suppressed it for over 5 years! Over time my body began screaming at me in pain, the aching increased daily, until…... I did a Vision to Victory session (the GradUit’s version of a dreamboard workshop) to reflect on a new way of life, with a happy and healthy body. I created a visual reminder to keep me focused on improving my health. I affirmed daily for 6 months “I get paid to exercise!”. Then, my friend, Barbara Carriere (Black Belt Trainer) 20 years my senior invited me to investigate “The Nia Technique”. I thought to myself if she can do it, why can’t I? So I did!

The deep desire to dance has always been strong in me. Anytime I was frustrated I would break out into a Happy Dance in my living room to relax my mind, release the happiness hormones in my body, let my spirit out to PLAY and to simply have FUN! Of course not realizing at the time this is the power of the “Molecules of Emotions” that Dr. Candace Pert shares in her book.

White Noise by: Tony Gyenis

There is a lot of talk on the internet about White Noise. What is it and why do we need it?

White noise is a sound that drowns out the repetitive thoughts in your brain mostly while you sleep. Recently, white noise has been suggested for the use for sleep due to our brains having challenges disconnecting from the computer use and information overload. However, the use of white noise needs to come with some awareness. For example, adult listening to white noise all night and over a long period of time may create a lethargic reaction. It is best to keep it to short periods of about an hour while sleeping just to get you to your R.E.M. (Rapid Eye Movement) stage of your sleep faster, the deep stage of sleep. White noise is useful for babies to encourage sleep because it stimulates their overall energy but limiting frequency of use is recommended.

The term white noise is used to describe a repetitive sound at a set frequency. Changes in frequencies but keeping the repetitive aspect, changes it from white noise to pink noise, blue noise, purple noise, green noise, red noise, and grey noise: the only differential is the frequency of the sound. As with white noise, the other coloured noises have practical applications.

If you have trouble staying asleep, pink noise is good as it covers unwanted sounds more effectively than white noise. Pink is also good to stimulate your self esteem and passions you see in your life: this is the most soothing of all. Blue noise is a smooth self cultivation sound which enhances our communication skills and our communication with ourselves. Purple noise is ideal for meditation as it stimulates the third eye to allow your senses to feel or see messages, tendencies, or ideas.

The internet is a good source where you can access white noise. There are several sites such as YouTube, Podcast Apps, Google searches, etc. where you can tap into these sounds. Having different ways to manage your thoughts is smart and keeps you alert and focused on the tasks at hand.

Abs Need TLC Too: A Massage Therapist’s Journey beyond Sit-ups and Smoothies

will confess that I have been a navel gazer for a long time. The navel sits right there in the centre of the human body - over an area full of vital organs needed to break down our food and determine what vitamins and minerals will nourish the function of all of the rest of us on all levels. How amazing! Yet hands-on care of the abdominals is almost never considered or requested in a regular massage treatment. So, what physical care can we offer our bellies if we look beyond exercise and diet?

In 2002, during the three years training for my registered massage therapy diploma, I remember feeling like there was more care to discover about abdominals beyond a little bit of hands-on practice with very basic relaxation and breathing techniques. What I did learn in the physiology courses in the program was that almost every blood cell, lymph fluid and spinal fluid system runs through the abdominal cavity.

I also learned that congestion and tightness in the abdominal area can affect the flow and the ability for all of the organs and its systems underneath to function freely and maintain optimal health and wellness from within. Still, I was left looking for more techniques to support the abdominals directly, not just treating the other side of the same area because of frequent clients’ pain in mid and lower back muscles.

In 2010, when I heard about The Arvigo Technique of Maya Abdominal Therapy, I realized that adding this treatment to my massage therapy toolkit would address the missing pieces of my navel gazing curiosity.

What the one week long intensive training program of the Maya Abdominal Therapy Practitioners program offered

by The Arvigo Institute in New Hampshire, US, taught me was critical hands on applications of the very area I had been fascinated with for many years previous. The teachers taught a series of gentle, non-invasive, visceral massage techniques that focus on the abdominal, back and hip areas of the body, useful for both men and women – finally, belly care for all! The techniques are based on repetition of light touch, not increasing physical pressure. Even within one session, I repeat techniques in the abdominal region, as adapted to meet the individual needs of each client.

Over time, the more treatment is received, the more your body has a chance to release the physical tension in the muscles and tissues surrounding the abdominal cavity and its' internal organ systems. These include the pulmonary system (breathing) digestive system (food digestions and elimination), the circulatory system (blood and lymphatics) and the reproductive system (uterus or the prostate).

Part of the training was also focused on supporting clients to sense/feel their own selves as they undergo treatments – so that you become your own expert and advocate. Rosita Arvigo, the founder of the school, understands and incorporates into her training that getting to know and lovingly support your whole being is the foundation to true health, in mind, body and energy.

Clients who are interested (the keeners!) also get to take home body-positive self-care tools that they can use in between treatments – what a great way to get to know the language of your own body and what it needs!

All the Maya Abdominal Therapy treatments also compliment many other forms of alternative health care practices, and I offer the option of working in cooperation with a Clinical Herbalist, as well as Chiropractors, Physiotherapists, Naturopathic Doctors and/or other health professionals you already see to co-create a coordinated team working on your behalf.

At last, as a Registered Massage Therapist and a Maya Abdominal Therapy Practitioner I feel like I offer my healing gifts in a way that is truly and holistic, supporting not only the functioning of your whole body, from head to toe to belly and back, but also providing tools to support your full continued growth as a full human being. What is it like to be a special needs foster parent during a pandemic? by: Kerrilyn Vriend

W

e face the same challenges that every other parent is experiencing. Our lives have gone from schedules and routine to uncertainty and living from one news briefing to the next. We have no manual or book to tell us how to approach living during these times. Being a foster parent to special needs children for 21 years, I took the core values that my children have instilled in me of resilience, perseverance, and survival to struggle through the first months.

Resilience is defined as the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties. As special needs parents, we are conditioned to have obstacles thrown at us and need to respond quickly, so the lockdown was just another mountain to conquer. A good part of March was spent helping my children learn our ‘new norm.’

Since my children are nonverbal, it requires a lot of patience and creative ways to make them understand why their lives had changed so much. Down came our school, and appointment schedules and up went a lot of walking, baking, and indoor activities. The whole time can be summed up as a game of chance of what was going to work and what was going to be epic failures. FYI - baking for me was an epic fail, but we did get to practice our fire safety numerous times!

Then March turned into April, and I was tempted to start eating a Costco size back of chocolate almonds and day drink, but then the word perseverance kept coming to mind. I have seen my children keep going, and even when treatments were oftentimes worse than the condition or when they were learning something new that looked impossible, they always manage to stick with it and excel. My mind would keep saying. You got this, just a few more weeks, you can do this. So instead of binge-watching Netflix in my yoga pants, we created new opportunities. We discovered that walking in the fields not only added to some great family time, but it had the ability to create some new health and physical goals. On nice days we would spend the afternoon playing eye spy on a blanket in the sun and listening to great music. When you took out all the social activities, school commitments and the zillion doctor appointments, we had time to reconnect. As a mother, it was my ‘aha’ moment of how much time we spend running around versus just actually being with each other.

with the worry of my kids having another appointment delay or it being moved forward another six months. I took every day as it came, I went from a schedule to more of a possible plan. I no longer fretted when things had to change in a blink of an eye.

Surviving this also meant building what I called Mommy breaks, and let me tell you that it is not hiding in the bathroom with your phone for five minutes of peace. That is taking 10-15 minutes treadmill breaks or putting on a mediation while your kids zoom with classmates. When we practice self-care, we have more to give to our children, spouses and friends. For us to be amazing parents, we must remember that charging our own battery not only makes us healthier but better parents.

Today as I watch the news and acknowledge that we might be in this for a long haul. I cannot send my kids back to school or day programs as they all have immune issues. I prepare for several more months of being creative, making sure cancelled holidays are still celebrated and that friends and family can still visit in clever ways. I can say that had I not become a foster parent decades ago, I am not sure if I would have emotionally done as well with Covid. The traits that my exceptional children taught me is really what allowed for me to be the best parent I could be during the Covid-19 pandemic.

June brought the hope of better times or at least the ability to see more than the front lawn of my house. We had not only survived this, and we had thrived. Was it perfect all the time, no, I had days where I might admit that crying in the shower seemed like a great way to start the morning. There were also days where hot dogs were cooked with super with no other food guide staples on the dinner table! That was okay because we were literally living in time where it was ‘okay’ to not be okay.

Suicide Prevention Month in the age of Covid 19: Finding Hope and Reasons to Live by: Bassem Elghawaby

I

started breathing quickly, my hands were feeling numb, I was shaking, what was happening? I was laying in bed on a typical Thursday night, though we were now a few weeks into the new normal of Covid 19 and things were nothing but normal. What was going on with me, I was feeling anxious about what was going on in the news, hearing about the cases going up, and the adjustments of staying home and isolation. Suddenly, the truce that bipolar disorder and generalized anxiety had generally held with my state of mind was being breached. I thought I was having a physical reaction on this Thursday night, maybe Covid or even a heart attack, who knows. I never felt this way before. I learned shortly in the ambulance called to the front of my building, that this was likely a panic attack. 20 years plus since diagnosis, the first 8 with some very tough fluctuations, and times of bleak darkness and even wishing for death, and now I was experiencing a manifestation of mental illness never felt before. This threw me off and challenged my sense of agency and control. The days and weeks following, I found myself more susceptible to mood changes and cycling, needing to reach out to my support network, and use all the tools I had developed over the years, such as cognitive behavioural therapy, personal development techniques, my faith practices, and the power of reaching out. But, what was most unsettling to me, was that I knew I would likely ride out these waves, but what about others that might have been like me earlier on my journey when the darkness was engulfing at times and it took everything to keep going? Those without the benefit of the lessons learned, doctors, medications, group therapies, personal development programs, and discovering an anchor and North Star like none other, my faith, in my case from the Islamic tradition.

I’ve been thinking about and moving towards being a mental health advocate, whatever that really means, since over 10 years, and this recent pandemic has sounded the sirens for me more than ever.

We’re into September now, over 6 months since the pandemic was really beginning to register on society’s collective radar, and it being Suicide Prevention month, perhaps it’s a good time to take stock of the less talked about epidemic of mental illness. Personally, I’m feeling a lot better, and as if I’ve come out the other side of going through bouts of depressive episodes that brought me back emotionally, albeit for less sustained amounts of time and intensity, to some of my hardest years. But, I worry about my peers, a few that I’ve worked with, and have disclosed to me about their own struggles. Who have seen me share candid Facebook lives with my friends or pen creative and open pieces about how I was feeling more susceptible and they could relate. What about all those calls for help on private Facebook groups I’m a part of and couldn’t possibly keep track of their posts. The Depression and Anxiety group with 77K strong and growing members, and the myriad of other ones both very specific and general named addressing the ills of one of the still most rampant societal taboos, but how long can this mass of people go from states of mainstream invisibility to some token days and months of ‘Let’s Talk’ and so on?

But, there are silver linings and great strides being made for those paying attention, and so many opportunities to affect change. Imagine the power we have to support others in a myriad of ways and literally be a means for setting individuals on the path to a much more rewarding quality of life, and in some cases literally saving lives.

There are so many people, organizations, and factors that I could acknowledge for what my psychiatrist mentioned was my ‘miracle case’ in terms of a turn around from the dark, despondent early days of manic depression and sometimes debilitating generalized anxiety. This psychiatrist that at one time I was seeing once a week, and that’s been with me since the beginning, at the age of 16, when I was coming out of an environment of cumulative and incrementally devastating bullying over a 4 year period, by the very people I called ‘friends’, but that’s another story, to be shared in my book of poetry chronicled over 20 years, that’s been in the state of near publishing for the past year or so.

Does Anxiety Affect You? by: Barb O'Dell

’ve suffered with anxiety for a lot of years.

As it’s become more acceptable to talk about it, I’ve come to realize that a lot of people share my affliction.

Talking about it creates a much needed awareness.

I’m always surprised to hear from people who have anxiety and panic attacks (I get those as well). Often, I would never have suspected that person to be dealing with anxiety. It’s not any one type of person who experiences them.

I knew that I had to do this; yes, there were a few tears, but I was able to talk myself down and took one step at a time towards the door, opened it, and walked out. I walked around for over an hour. I was so nervous at first but, as I looked around and took in the sights, I smiled and was so proud of myself for doing it. I finally understood that, for me to overcome my anxiety, I need to acknowledge it, be patient and kind with myself, and move one foot in front of the other.

Anxiety can take over your life. It can immobilize I am learning ways to deal with it and to cope with it.

I am so aware now that as I start to feel it coming on, I can you. However, this is not how your life has to be. You can prevent a full-blown attack. Not always, but more often choose to learn how to live with it, and even how to harness its power to enrich your life. Start by making that decision. than not.

Then, take it one step at a time.

I realized, working with a life coach that I actually Living in fear is not living. Feeling anxious, it’s ok, it used my anxiety as a propeller to do many things that I would never have done otherwise. I would get myself to to shall pass… JUST BREATH do things—get involved in theatre, for example, on stage in front of an audience. Why? Because it scared the crap out of me and I thought it would help me overcome my anxiety (it didn't). But it sure was an experience. There have been many things like this.

During one particular coaching session, my coach helped me to realize that without my anxiety, I would have missed out on a whole lot of amazing things. Talk about a aha moment! I stopped looking at my anxiety as a burden and started seeing it as something to be thankful for. I now accept that it is going to happen when I least expect it but, because of that day and these realizations, I have been able to avoid having any serious attacks. I have had moments where I can feel it wanting to overtake me, but I talk to myself, acknowledge the feeling, and tell myself everything is good; I take a few deep breaths, and maybe shed a few tears, but I calm down and move toward whatever it is that I set out to do, even if just for a few minutes.

I was in Santa Barbara, California, by myself a few years ago. [Perhaps mention the reason for the trip?] Now, I don’t like to do anything by myself; that's just the way I am. Anyway, here I am in the hotel … it’s beautiful out …

I’m in California, I HAD to go and explore, right? Not an easy option for someone riddled with anxiety. I could feel the attack overwhelming me. My first reaction was to stay in the hotel, but I truly wanted to enjoy the beauty of the

What’s Your Story? by: Heather Elliott

W

ithout realizing it, our connections to people often come through participation in each other’s stories or scripts.

If you have a fix-it personality, you tend to connect with individuals who create drama or take part in a victim approach to life – and vice versa.

Think of the brain like a hard drive and your Mind as its software.

Without realizing it you have created a story about who you are and that story frames how you live your life.

It influences how you see your circumstances, other people, yourself and how you interpret what happens to you.

If you live out a story filled with fears, you connect with people who enjoy playing the hero, villain, or another victim.

It is the driving force behind the law of attraction and the people, places or events that you draw into your life.

If your script is one of love, you tend to connect with others who run the same script or those wanting empathy.

It also regulates how much you can achieve in life (unless you outgrow it)!

Stories work best with multiple characters, so whatever your story is, you subconsciously look for other characters to compliment it.

Outgrowing your Mind

It isn’t good or bad.

Becoming aware that your Mind is of your creation, that it’s not necessarily the truth and that you have choice is your first step. This is perhaps the hardest part because most people are on automatic pilot, thinking, doing and saying whatever is ‘on their mind’.

Becoming aware of it is the important part. Once you’re aware, you can decide if the script you’re running is right for the character you want to be.

Learning to search for and BE yourself is the 2nd step. It’s like Dr. Seuss said, “Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.”

Knowing your script lets you examine it.

Being yourself is simple. The challenge lies in figuring out the parts that are the true ‘you’ instead of a story you’re living because someone else assigned that character to you, and then letting those unchosen parts fall away.

Is That Bad?

• Is it a story you consciously chose?

• Where did you learn to play the character if you didn’t pick it?

• What benefit do you get from playing your part?

• Does it help you lead the life you want or does it limit you?

• What happens if you try to stop the story? Can you?

• How do other people in your life respond if you stop your script and play a different role?

Recent Facebook Conversation by: Lyn McCuaig

A friend sent me a Facebook post recently with a caption that read, "Depression Kills 2328 people a day". That statement got me thinking, as was intended, about how we are all trying to cope with COVID-19 and the health costs to many of us because of it.

I dug a little deeper to verify this stat, and the World Health Organization put out this statement in January of this year: "Close to 800,000 people die due to suicide every year" What about Canada's stats? The latest data I could find was from July 2019, stating that in Canada, there are approximately 4,000 deaths by suicide per year. Of these, a third are among people 45-49 years of age. It's also the second leading cause of death among youth and young adults (15-34 years). Suicide rates are approximately three times higher among men compared to women.

With Fall, many of us will feel the impact of Seasonal Affective Disorder. Symptoms start in the Fall and continue into the winter months. It is a condition that saps energy, causes moodiness and may lead to depression in the spring or early summer.

Keep in mind that these stats are all pre-COVID-19. Sadly, the stats that will be reported for 2020 and 2021 may very well show a significant rise in depression, SAD, and mental health conditions overall.

Studies report that statistically, suicide rates are higher in spring and early summer, not fall. Well, the ramifications of COVID-19 for Canadians were truly being felt in March, and things have not yet shown significant improvement to make us feel that the "worst" is behind us.

Don't brush off anxiety, depression, mood swings and "fight or flight" feelings as something you simply have to tough out on your own. Take the steps necessary to keep your mood lighter and healthier. Dealing with your symptoms now can prevent the damage that can be caused by these conditions going unchecked.

Studies show that anxiety and depression can increase your risk for heart disease, decrease your interest in sex, increase or decrease your appetite, weaken your immune system, contribute to gastrointestinal disorders, and the list goes on…

Treating anxiety and depression can lead to improvements in mental and physical health.
