A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR...

Sky’s the limit Home is where every story begins. My journey with the TONI&GUY family began 13 years ago: from a receptionist in the Madison Ave location, trying to make my way through fashion school, to VP of Marketing. My path is a testimony to the ambition my colleagues and mentors alike all shared. TONI&GUY has always been about creating opportunities, and it is very evident in this issue of STRUT. Every year as this company grows it impacts the lives of our students and this magnitude shows within our own staff pushing and cultivating everyone on board to perpetually create better versions of themselves. In this issue you will find some of our academy alumni stories which speak to the power of dreaming big. New franchisees are joining the family across the nation further creating new opportunities for the T&G community. A huge congratulations to all of our Photographic Awards winners, the excitement in the room when each winner was announced was so incredibly rewarding. Also, let’s not forget the big year Stephen Jaime had - from the debut of his first collection cut in the Westside Collection, to winning Hairdresser of the Year. One important thing this company has taught me is that you don’t have to be anything other than yourself. T&G is not about perfection, it’s about showing the work of your own dedication to the unique art of your dreams that you set from day one. Even if you’re not quite there yet, you are one step closer than you were yesterday. We are all about endless opportunities, and the best part of it all is that we get to share these moments under the same roof.

C R E A T I V E Zak, Caroline and the TONI&GUY Art Team truly outdid themselves at the Creative Release this year. The ballroom at the Intercontinental Hotel in Dallas, TX was packed with over 2,000 attendees (that's 400 more than last year!). When the doors opened, the crowd rushed in to see the launch of not one, but two new projects! We introduced The Venice Project and The Desert Project combined to create the Westside Collection.

For the first time in the compny’s history, TONI&GUY created a twopart collection. Together, the Venice Project and The Desert Project were revealed to create the WestSide Collection. The Venice Project was revealed first with it’s edgy, sea-punk style with cuts and colours reminiscent of the stark contrasts of Venice Beach, CA. Next, to the audience’s surprise, a secret collection known as The Desert Project was revealed. The Desert Project presented as a warm and inviting color palette with a natural flow of desert hues. After each reveal, the Art Team took the stage to recreate each look from start to finish, while Anthony Mascolo interviewed each team member. Both projects took the audience on a journey of transformation inspiring everyone in attendance to push the boundaries of hairdressing, both creatively and technically.

Later that evening, the highly-anticipated Photographic Awards show was larger and more elaborate than ever before. The finalists’ and winners’ outstanding entries were displayed in combination with live model presentations from the T&G Art Team, Academy Directors and The Cut Above winners. The breathtaking exhibition created a truly electrifying experience fueled by the audience’s anticipation and energy. The element of surprise was in full effect, from a light show with break dancers, to an interactive colour segment with male models who showered the audience with vibrant paint powders. The culmination of segments ended with a final bow from the Mascolo family and Art Team, joined on stage by their children…our future hairdressers in the making!

Each quarter TONI&GUY students compete for a once in a lifetime opportunity through The Cut Above. The nationwide competition takes a unique approach to hairdressing education by incorporating students’ newly learned technical skills with creativity. This quarter was no exception as The Cut Above winner, Jamae Coonts from TONI&GUY Academy Seattle, earned the opportunity to have her mood board come to life at the 20th Annual Photographic Awards. Jamae competed against TONI&GUY Academies across the nation, winning the once in the lifetime opportunity to design and style a presentation model for our annual awards show. Past Cut Above winners Dawson Sherman and Allegra Caluori, were also invited to create a model that walked the runway at the Photographic Awards.

Q&A with Jamae Coonts Walk us through your day; from backstage prep, to model presentation to you standing on stage. My day started at 2AM in Seattle when I woke up and headed to the airport. I hit the ground running when I arrived in Dallas, there wasn’t a minute to spare. Thankfully I had the opportunity to watch Creative Release. Seeing the unveiling of the Westside Collection beforehand was truly incredible. Once the show was over, I went backstage and began prepping for the Photographic Awards. Devon Ray partnered with me to execute my vision. After I completed the model’s hair, she went to wardrobe and makeup based on my mood board concepts. When the Photographic Awards began, I went backstage with Allegra and Dawson who shared the same process on their own models. Allegra’s presentation model represented her Cut Above experience of assisting on the Venice Project, while Dawson’s mirrored the New York Fashion Week show he assisted with. As an added bonus, I announced the award for Best Alumni Cut alongside Zak Mascolo. The day flew by and was truly incredible. Out of the entire The Cut Above experience, what were you most excited about? Meeting the Art Team and working with them. They have so much knowledge and experience under their belt, learning from them was amazing. What was the hardest part of your style? The prep was easy, finishing the look was the most difficult. I learned a new braiding technique from Devon Ray right before the show. I had the opportunity to try something new so I went for it! Tell us about the vision you had for your model. The vision for my model started with a quote, “Creatively Curious”. It sparked something, being creative means immersing yourself in new experiences. Why did you decide to go to TONI&GUY Academy Seattle? I grew up as a competitive dancer and I always did the hair and makeup for my team. I never thought I could make hairdressing a career. I wanted to do something fun and artistic, so at 22, I took a TONI&GUY tour and knew I wanted to attend on the spot. I had to take time away from school for an emergency. When I returned, I pushed my self harder than ever before. I immersed myself in the TONI&GUY culture and participated in every opportunity the academy offered. The education I received at TONI&GUY gave me an incredible foundation and now I know where I want to go in the industry and how to get there. Where do you see yourself after TONI&GUY? I graduated in October and began an associate program at a nearby salon to keep learning and improving my skills. Ultimately I’m focused on styling. I’ve been working with photographers, on weddings and photo shoots. I also work with bloggers and social influencers which is icing on cake.

Sarah Menard TONI&GUY Worcester Student

How I got on stage at Creative Release In mid-October, I had the thrilling opportunity to assist Zak Mascolo, Creative Director of the Americas, and his Art Team at the Masello Next Level Show - an annual show where local salons present their latest work. In conversation, I mentioned that I was open to a major style change. Most of my life I’ve had long hair, but I’ve been open to taking chances with my hair style. Zak jumped at the opportunity and invited me to the Creative Release stage to demonstrate a style change to one of the new WestSide looks, and I said yes! The following week, I was on stage at the TONI&GUY Creative Release! I was a little bit shy and anxious before the show, but my nerves settled fast. My experience was so exciting and if I had the opportunity, I’d do it again. This experience not only gave me more confidence, but as a hairdresser, I was able to learn tips and tricks from the very best. Zak gave me a version of the “Alex” cut from The Venice Project. I’m in love with my hair now and I plan on sticking to this cut for a while.

I take great pleasure in seeing my client’s vision come to life, beginning with colour and ending with a great cut.

For over 50 years TONI&GUY has been known as an education based company that departmentalizes in cut or colour. Evolution is in TONI&GUY’s DNA and hairdressing is an industry that encompasses many elements. In 2014 we felt it was time for a change and decided to give the hairdresser the option to embrace all things hair; Creating THE TOTAL CONCEPT HAIRDRESSER! The total concept hairdresser has the opportunity to create, customize, cut, and colour! The TONI&GUY CLASSICS are a complete collection of salon viable looks; each cut is paired with a custom fit colour technique. This creates seamless consultations between colourist and stylist; and simplifies the decision making process for the total concept hairdresser.

Art Team GOES NATIONAL

The Art Team is an elite group focusing not only on education but all elements of art and hairdressing. Upon its conception, the Art Team was based out of Texas and California. In 2016 the Art Team is continuing to expand, providing additional support to teams in Arizona, Colorado and Georgia.

Areas putting effort into their Art Team deserve to be supported. We aim to give stylists across the United States the same opportunities. Collaborating with more locations aligns Art Teams across the nation with the same vision.

“

Advanced on the Road In 2015, the Advanced Education team traveled across the nation going to states like Connecticut, Colorado, and Arizona. This year is no exception and the Advanced Team will be visiting even more locations. Not only is this an exciting opportunity to learn new techniques, but we will also be utilizing local teams for demos. TONI&GUY Alumni receive 25% off classes on the road and 50% off of classes in Costa Mesa, Dallas and Santa Monica. Current stylists at our franchise locations receive 50% off classes. Tell us about your TONI&GUY background? I began my career as a hairdresser in 2003 at the TONI&GUY salon in Lubbock, TX. After just a year I was promoted to Salon Director. It was the best salon in the area, with an excellent reputation. In 2010, the franchise owner decided to part ways with TONI&GUY, and I moved on to other career opportunities. It has been your vision to bring TONI&GUY back to the Lubbock market. Explain how you developed this vision and how were you able to turn your dream into a reality? I worked at a few other salons, but never felt full. I felt hungry for more. One day, I checked the TONI&GUY website just to see what was going on with the company, and I saw the franchise opportunities. I had to have it. I was determined to bring the TONI&GUY name, brand, and culture back to life in Lubbock, TX. You are opening your salon fully staffed and double shifted with 25 staff working out of 16 stations. How many staff did you initially interview and how did you attract so many hairdressers to your new salon? What was your secret? My Salon Director, Brianna and I started with a vision of who would represent our TONI&GUY. We knew we needed staff as eager and passionate about the brand as we were. Word-of-mouth spread fast with the help of social networking and my email inbox was quickly filled with resumés. Additionally, the TONI&GUY education is held in high regard within the beauty industry, so that in itself attracted numerous applicants. We met with over 45 candidates and during every interview, Brianna and I would express our pride and passion for the TONI&GUY culture. It’s one thing to work in a salon, but it’s another to love the salon you work in.

Education is the key to success in our business. You recently took your entire new staff to our Dallas Academy for a weeklong training session. Why was this so important to you? We had initially decided to gather our team and do a hands-on training session in Lubbock. After some thought, Brianna and I decided that training in a TONI&GUY academy would provide our team with strong motivation and insight into the TONI&GUY world. Some of my team members were new to the industry and had not experienced how amazing the education was. I felt this was definitely the best decision I could make for my team. I have truly invested my heart into the TONI&GUY culture. TONI&GUY has given me the opportunity to carry out my own dream. Did you have any obstacles to overcome in the process of opening your TONI&GUY location? I overcame many obstacles during this process; some minor and some major. One day things would go smoothly, and the next day, nothing would go right. Luckily, I have an amazing support system. If I had to, I would go through this process all over again. Every worry, every tear, and every bit of stress has been worth it. My advice to anyone opening a TONI&GUY franchise: keep pushing!

Bruno’s Notes

After distributing a 20+ page booklet to TONI&GUY employees about the importance of skills like communication, leadership and customer service, I learned that few people even read it… I realized that the heavy read of a 20+ page booklet may not have been the best way to communicate a message to my audience. The number one rule in communication is to know your audience; my audience is comprised of mostly visual learners who may prefer a lighter read. So, I decided to communicate my messages through STRUT in separate pieces, so that it reaches my audience in little bits. After all, if the primary goal of communicating is to get your message across and your message isn’t reaching your audience, what’s the point? Effective communication is the key to empathy and teamwork. Communication is the most powerful tool we have, and yet, we don’t always use it. If we communicate effectively we will be able to solve problems with more ease or before they even arise. It’s important to know that your communication style may be different than that of the person you’re communicating with. For example, even though my wife and I have been married for many years and we are on the same page, we sometimes still misunderstand each other due to our different styles of communication. So how do we learn to communicate effectively? First you need to recognize your communication style. Then, assess the communication style of the person you are communicating with. In a broad sense, there are two styles of communication: direct and indirect. Direct communicators like to get straight to the point by being firm and clear and are generally good at persuading others. They will cite facts and present ideas in a more black-and-white way. Indirect communicators prefer to observe and wait before responding by asking questions and listening carefully. They understand that the more you know about another person, the more influential you can be. They are maybe more likely to use non-verbal forms of communication. Direct communicators may come off as blunt and bossy, which can make the indirect get defensive and shut down. Likewise, indirect communicators can seem emotional and boring and the direct communicators can grow impatient and stop listening. But there’s a solution! The more you recognize these communication styles, the better you will become at preventing a disconnect. When communicating with others, manage your expectations from the other person and understand that they may communicate differently than you do, which is not a bad thing. To be really well-rounded equip your communication toolbox with both direct and indirect skills.

Lets Get Physical. Working long hours on your feet can take a toll on your body. Loosen tight muscles and prevent future health problems with these simple exercises that you can do from your station.

LEGS AND SHOULDERS AT WORK

ARM RAISE CALF RAISES

FOR TIRED HANDS & ARMS

Strengthen calf muscles by standing with your feet together and slowly move to stand on your toes and raise your calves. Hold this position for 10 seconds.

FINGER STRETCH Make a fist with your fingers, hold for a moment, then release and spread fingers into a wide fan. Repeat 15 times.

WRIST FLEX Lay your arm flat on a table with your hand hanging off. Bend your wrist down until you feel a deep stretch, hold for 5 seconds. Bend wrist up until you feel the stretch, hold for another 5 seconds. Repeat 10 times. For added tension, put a brush in your hand while performing this exercise. This builds great forearms for blow drying! 38 STRUT

Find two heavy objects, like large shampoo bottles and hold one in each hand. Start with your arms at your side. Engage your abs and while keeping arms straight, lift arms up to shoulder height in front of you. Repeat 15 times.

SHAKE OFF

THE WORK DAY

Relieve pain from wearing high heels with these foot stretches Lie on your back and use a strap around the ball of your foot. Lift your leg up while keeping the other leg on the ground and pull on the strap to pull your toes towards you until you feel a nice stretch in your calves and hamstrings. Hold this for 30 seconds and repeat on the other side. Stand with your hands against a wall and position your legs into a lunge. The front leg should be bent and the back leg should be fully extended. Make sure to keep both feet on the ground and slowly move your back leg closer to make the lunge smaller. Bend your back knee to keep heel on the ground. Repeat on the other side.

THE BOB STARTED IT ALL Bobby pins gained popularity after World War I during the flapper era to hold bobbed hair in place.

ONCE UPON A TIME IN FRANCE... In 1899 Luis Marcus invented what is now known as the Bobby Pin in Paris, France. The original pins sold for 35 cents per pair.

BOB, BOBBIE, BOBBY A trademark for the term “bobbie pin” was held for a few decades by Bob Lépine after bobby pins gained popularity in the 1920’s. However, the name “bobby pin” was likely coined as a reference to the Bob hairstyle they were known for securing.

WHICH SIDE IS UP? It depends on what style you are trying to achieve. The myth is that the ridge of the bobby pin lays flush against your scalp. However, when creating some styles, like a classic bun, it can be optimal to have the ridge side up with the blade against the scalp. Think of it this way, the bobby pin will hold hair most snug on the ridge side, so evaluate what the style needs most and adjust your technique.

THE SCIENCE OF IT ALL Most Bobby Pins are made out of medium carbon steel. If you want to get scientific, that is iron mixed with .6% Carbon or Fe3C. Bobby Pins have more carbon than a paper clip to make them strong but not enough carbon to make the pins brittle. Bobby Pins are then coated with plastic to ensure they will not rust.

PIN PRODUCTION How many bobby pins are produced each year? After thorough research the answer was found inconsequential because all bobby pins manufactured are lost shortly after purchased by consumers.

BOB路BY PIN Nor th American Australian New Zealand [noun]

A thin piece of metal that is bent so that the ends are close together. Used for holding hair in place

Tips

TONI&GUY Predicts the Whereabouts of Your Lost Bobby Pins

Spray bobby pins with hairspray to get a better grip. Use a weaving motion to insert bobby pin perpendicular to hair. Flip the pin over 180 degrees and push it flush against the scalp for a secure hold.

I would imagine bobby pins are in between the seats of the DeLorean and have made it back to the future. I look forward to being reunited with them.

Facts

– Christy Kemp, Newport

They are always in the trunk of my car.

Hair pins existed in ancient Assyria and Egypt and were made of metal, ivory, bronze, and wood.

– Rachel Brumbaugh, Costa Mesa

Every bobby pin ends up between the couch cushions and eventually jams the vacuum cleaner.

The early evidence of hair pins has been found in Venus figurines.

– Lilly Steffes, Dallas

In Han Chinese culture it wasn’t until girls turned fifteen that they were allowed to wear hair pins. The right of passage was translated ‘hairpin initiation’ and marked the becoming of age when girls went from wearing braids in childhood to become young women who used hair pins.

The majority of lost bobby pins end up on the dressing room floor at major retailers like Barneys! Trying on clothes is a major contributor to the lost bobby pin phenomenon. – Debbie Webster, Marina Del Rey

It takes approximately 40 bobby pins to secure a ballerina’s bun. That means for a show the size of Swan Lake or the Nutcracker there are 6,000-10,000 bobby pins used each night.

They end up at the bottom of my pool! – Devon Ray, Dallas

I find bobby pins in the lining of old blazers. One blazer in particular has created a small hole through the pocket over time. The bobby pin has traveled to the waist of the jacket and eventually up the sleeve, with the final destination being the bottom of the cuff! It will remain there until it finds an escape through another hole.

Straight hairpins have been used for centuries. In fact, cavemen and cavewomen carved u-shaped hairpins from sticks to hold their hair. Bobby Pins are also known as a bobbing pin, kirby grip or hair grip in the United Kingdom.

– Mayra Rodriguez, Dallas

There are approximately 750 bobby pins in a lbs.

When a girl really likes a boy, she leaves them all over his apartment to claim her territory. – Breanna Collier, Marina del Rey

SOCIAL MEDIA DIRECTOR

SO CIA L FR ONT @zendaya

#FREAKYFRINGE | Rainbow hues are making headlines. The rainbow fringe invasion adds a bang to basic styles.

7 Social Media Mistakes That Wreck Your Career DEAR DIARY Posts that are ‘too personal’ are a red flag to employers that you may have difficulty working with a team. If your post is something you would feel uncomfortable sharing face-to-face with a group at a party, it should not be on social media.

SAVE THE POLITICS

#StrutOn TheStreet

It is no secret that everyone has an opinion, especially with the 2016 election around the corner. Spare the Twitter war and keep overly political comments to yourself or for debate in real life conversations.

CUT THE CURSING Professionals do not use profanity on social media. Not only does it send the wrong message, but some social platforms will block commenters through a profanity filter.

THE MORNING AFTER No matter how good you look (and feel) after a couple of rounds at the bar, do not post in real time. Save your night out photos for the morning and decide if that cocktail induced selfie still seems like a good idea.

SOCIAL MEDIA ISN’T FOR KIDS Never take or post images of other people’s children without parental permission. If you want to post a photo of a minor for social media be sure their face is obstructed.

IF YOU DON’T HAVE SOMETHING NICE TO SAY… Don’t say anything at all. Complaining about anything, especially your place of work or boss is strictly prohibited. No matter how private your social profiles are, comments made online have a way of resurfacing. GHOSTING Not having any social media profiles can cost you, especially if you are in a job-seeking phase. If you think a social media account is just a scrapbook for bad decisions, think again. Your accounts help establish your credibility and build a connection with employers before they have the opportunity to meet you.

Snapchat entered the socialsphere in 2012 and has grown from a small social media platform to an effective way to increase revenue. Due to it’s nature, Snapachat’s capabilities are best used to reach your audience in the moment. Picture yourself walking into the salon, only to find your mid-afternoon appointment has canceled. With a simple snap and extra offer, like a deep conditioning treatment, you can reach your audience with the right message at the right time and earn a replacement booking. Snapchat is most effective when used for reminders, announcements, and behind the scenes content. TIPS: You are telling a story, so get cinematic. Pan up from the base of a haircut to the roots, then take a few steps back. Go behind the scenes and show your audience the process utilizing the Snapchat “Stories” feature. Snap a before, show the tools and products you use to achieve the look, then finish with a 360ª view of your client in the chair. Stories last twenty-four hours before expiring, rather than living forever like other social media platforms. Snapchat is ruled by organic content and authenticity so have fun with your Snaps!

2016 is sure to be a year of unorthodox beauty trends, so unleash your individuality and prepare to shine.

5 . S H A DE S O F B LUE

BLOGGER

BEAT Kate Albrecht of the awardwinning Mr. Kate blog and best selling book A Hot Glue Gun Mess, delivers an amazing DIY mani tutorial plus exclusive Q&A for STRUT readers.

MR. KATE FOR TONI&GUY DIY MANI

MANY STRIPES MANICURE TUTORIAL

DO IT!

The glamour of the green, metallic, and black is given depth by the natural nail peeking out in between stripes. Note: this is a tutorial for a gel manicure, as it helps maintain the gold nail tape. However, the steps are super simple to adjust to a normal manicure! Just use your regular polish and make sure to top with multiple layers of a strong top coat.

1. Apply the base coat to your nails, and cure.

PREP IT! Base Coat Green Nail Polish Black Nail Polish Thin nail brush 1/64” Metallic Nail Tape Nail scissors Top Coat Gel Polish LED Lamp

2. Paint the tips of your nails black, using a thin brush to get a straight edge across the bottom. But don’t worry about going back to clean up or even out any lines, the nail tape will eventually cover it! For nails where you intend to put green stripes, only paint the top 1/4 of the nail. For nails without green, paint the top half. 3. Dab a little green polish onto a piece of foil or paper plate. Use the thin nail brush to paint a stripe horizontally across your nail. Once the stripes are done, cure your nails. 4. Now it’s time for the tape! I found it easiest to precut a bunch of small pieces, about 3/4 inch in length, and hang them off the UV light to have handy when I needed to grab one! Place your piece of tape across the edges of each stripe, working carefully to cover any uneven edges. Once placed, use the nail scissors to trim the excess tape as close to the edge of your nail as possible. 5. Apply a generous layer of top coat, cure once more, and voila!

Q&A What made you choose this topic for STRUT readers? Nail art is one of those things that brightens your day, especially if you're someone that works with your hands. It's hard to be in a bad mood looking down at a fabulous manicure! I'm always striving to come up with nail art techniques that look complex but are surprisingly easy to do, and this metallic striped nail art is exactly that! I think the combination of black, mixed metals and negative space is very chic. I hope the STRUT readers agree! You have an impressive resume -- designer, author, actress, lifestyle blogger, YouTube Star and businessperson to name a few! What keeps you focused while working on so many projects? Thank you! The sheer pace of it all keeps me focused on the task at hand because I don't have the luxury to procrastinate when there is so much to do. That is the nature of being

90 STRUT

TONIGUY.COM

an entrepreneur in any field, I think. I am very ambitious and I love what I do, and I know that if I'm not working my hardest, it will be hard to motivate others around me to do so. We love the Mr. Kate White Beauty Marks! Do you have any tips to incorporate them for everyday wear? I'm so glad you love them! I hand draw all of the designs with the hopes that the wearer will be inspired to get creative with styling the BeautyMarks in their own way. For everyday wear I think it's fun to add them to your hands, wrists, or even wear them as earrings. A little tiny snowflake next to your eye is also so cute for a hint of wintry romance to enhance a daytime makeup look. What is your life motto & what does it mean? Enjoy the journey. I'm always trying (and often failing) to live in the moment and enjoy this awesome life I have working with people I love (including my

business partner/husband Joey) and being around so much creativity that, in turn, inspires others. Goals are so important to keep you on track, but the moments that lead you there are what make up your life. We have to know, what is the secret to styling your signature mane? I have naturally curly hair and I highlight it, so my main (mane, haha) prerogative is taming the dryness and frizz. The benefit to curly hair is that if I blow it out a bit, usually around my face and neck with a round brush and then use a tapered wand iron, I can get a messy wavy look that lasts me a few days. The key is twisting the locks into a loose bun on the top of my head at night so I don't wake up with a rat's nest in the back of my head. If you could only share one life hack with us, what would it be? Don't stress it, just do it! So many people are paralyzed in the "I know how I want to decorate but I'm too scared" or "I love this color but it doesn't look good on me" stage of expressing themselves and life is too short! Buy throw pillows in hot pink if you want to introduce that color, or even try it as your lip color for a couple days. Really, what do you have to lose? You’re constantly on the go, what beauty item do you refuse to leave the house without? I have two very different days: the ones when I'm filming videos so I wear a lot of makeup, lashes, etc., and days when I'm not filming so I stay pretty low-mainentance. My favorite product is probably bronzer - I am a native Cali girl, I can't give up that glow! If you had to choose one, what is your all time favorite DIY project? Probably the Found Objects Headboard from my book A Hot Glue Gun Mess. It's the epitome of what I stand for with the Mr. Kate brand, to not judge but embrace the mess and create pretty things that bring you joy. What style trend are you rocking this winter? I love that bright colors are being celebrated this winter, it's a fun break from the usual dark tones you see. I love a '60s silhouette too. I'm short, so a mini dress and boots are great for my petite frame.

Where do you draw inspiration from when creating hair & beauty tutorials? I always go with my instinct first - if it's something that I want to wear or do, that's usually where I start. I also love getting inspiration from our amazing audience of readers and viewers on the Mr. Kate blog and videos (YouTube). They are a wonderfully vocal bunch whose requests often inform our content. How has your YouTube channel evolved through the last six years? Can you give us a hint on what we can expect next? It has grown immensely in the last six years since I started it very casually to host some random videos I was making at the time. It has evolved into one of our biggest platforms for the brand. We really treat it as a channel, much like on TV, and our hope is to have many more self-contained series coming out covering a variety of things in beauty, home and fashion. I love doing both large-scale series, like OMG We Bought A House and Breaking Beige, as well as the quick and pretty videos, like our beauty and stop-motion DIY tutorials. Advice time! What would you tell readers who want to start their own blog but haven’t taken the first steps? Identify your unique voice! Get inspiration from other people, but also make sure you look within to pinpoint what you want the tone and aesthetic to be for your blog before you name it and start blogging. There are some great platforms out there to host your blog, we use WordPress for the Mr. Kate site. I actually get this question a lot so I wrote a dedicated blog post to answer some of the more technical questions, you can read it here: www.mrkate.com/2013/01/30/ask-mr-katehow-do-i-start-a-blog

At 25, I was pretty lost in life and had little confidence that I would ever attain a promising career. At that point, I had been medically discharged from the U.S. Army, had a brother pass away, and I flunked out of college. I had explored several occupations and played in a lot of bands, but I was searching for happiness in all of the wrong places. It wasn’t until I truly explored myself - my strengths and my weaknesses - that I decided to pursue a career in cosmetology. I chose TONI&GUY because they put their money where their mouth is. Every client that walks out of a TONI&GUY salon looks like they came straight from a New York City photoshoot. I couldn’t believe that in 10 months, these young students were creating such amazing avant-garde up-dos and cutting hair so fluently. After working at a top salon in Dallas, I moved to Knoxville, Tennessee and started handmaking my own hair products, while picking up few hours a week at LOX Salon where I still am today. I began donating the soaps as a way to help veterans by doing what I love. This is how Anchors was born. Attending TONI&GUY was one of the most challenging experiences of my life (and I was a paratrooper!). My journey through cosmetology has been nothing but exciting. It’s been up, down, and all around. I’ve been the happiest I’ve ever been and really can’t see myself doing anything else.

2012 Terri realized she needed to go back to what she loved and quickly enrolled at TONI&GUY in Modesto, CA and was determined to follow through.

January 2013 She won 2nd place in a student competition at the ISSE Salon & Spa Expo in Long Beach, CA.

May 2013 Terri graduated from TONI&GUY and earned her cosmetology license. She then became a T&G instructor in June

May 2015 Terri was promoted to Assistant Educational Director.

October 2015 Terri helped create an Avant Garde piece for the Director’s Cut segment of TONI&GUY’s 20th Annual Photographic Awards, and walked the stage with her finished look.

Hi, my name is Dorian Gray aka- DooDoo and I’m a French Bulldog. My favorite things to do are go on walks, play tug of war with whatever I can find, sleep, and go to doggy daycare to play with my friends! My owner, Lauren named me Dorian Gray because she loved the novel "The picture of Dorian Gray" by Oscar Wilde. My next birthday is on March 3rd and we have big plans to have a party and eat a doggy safe birthday cake because it's going to be my first birthday! I can tell that Lauren loves me so much because she always makes people look at my picture and constantly kisses me. I always get into trouble when I fart (if you know a Frenchie, that happens a lot) but I know that my Mommy still loves me.

Hi, my name is Oliver and I’m a Miniature Long-haired Dachshund. My favorite things are going to the beach, playing with my kitty sisters, and snuggling. My owners, Brian and Bri named me Oliver because they thought it fit my sweet personality. My next birthday is on July 14th and we have plans to throw a huge celebration with all my friends. I can tell that Brian and Bri love me so much because they tell me everyday, forgive me when I get into mischief, and give me lots of toys. I always get into trouble when I chase the kitties, but I know that Brian and Bri still love me.

Hi, my name is Star and I’m a Palomino Quarter Horse. My favorite thing to do is prance around the show arena. My owner, Sabio named me Star because he believes that one day I will be a great show horse and become the star. My next birthday is on April 21st and we have big plans to visit the top trainer in Scottsdale, AZ so I can start my professional training of being a show horse. I can tell that Sabio loves me so much because he always comes out early in the mornings to brush me, feed me, and exercise me. He also gives me juiced carrots. I always get into trouble when I buck him off, but I know that Sabio still loves me.

Hi, my name is Poppy and I’m Maine Coon. My favorite thing to do is walk on a leash and go to the ice cream shop. My owner, Momo named me Poppy because she couldn’t name me “puppy” because I’m a cat. My next birthday is on August 22nd and we have big plans to go to Vegas because my mom and I have the same birthday. I can tell that Momo loves me so much because she feeds me bread every morning. I always get into trouble when I nibble on my brothers and sisters but I know that Momo still loves me.

Ask Bruno

@brunomascolo

Have you ever wanted to ask Bruno Mascolo, the CEO of TONI&GUY, how he got his start in the hairdressing industry? Who his favorite fashion/hair icons are? Or how many different colour suits he owns? We asked the TONI&GUY community to submit their inquiries. Here’s what happened...

As a huge soccer supporter myself, I’d love to know which team you enjoy watching.

Lee Caldera

I enjoy watching the Chelsea professional soccer team from Fulham, London.

Yes. As an industry role model, I look up to Vidal Sassoon. On the personal side, my mother and father are my role models. I admire the difficult choices they endured through to make life better for my brothers and me.

Is there another type of food you love eating beside Italian Food?

Sabio Viloria

Franchise Owner, Chandler

Italian is my absolute favorite. However, I enjoy eating sushi and Mexican food.

98 STRUT

Do you have any role models? If so, who are they and why are they role models to you?

Ashley Satterwhite

Financial Aid Coordinator, Plano Academy

TONIGUY.COM

Salon Director, La Cantera

What profession would you not like to do?

Kienan Tepper

Graphic Designer, MdR Studio

In an Interview you gave to DMagazine in 2011 you said that "Hairdressing is a young person game." Do you have any advice for me, as a not-soyoung student/hairdresser, so people feel comfortable with me and my services?

Pauline Gaspard

Student, Costa Mesa Academy

I think that the best way is to make sure that you communicate with your clients in a way that’s effective for them, so that they feel immediately comfortable and that they are important. That way, age disappears. When you don’t communicate effectively, people reflect on what you look like instead of who you are.

An undertaker... For a chance to be featured in “Ask Bruno” in the next issue of STRUT, submit your question(s) along with your full name, TONI&GUY location, and your position to askbruno@TONIGUY.com

SOUNDTRACK 2 my life with Kimber Summers

Size does matter! I am sure you have all finally gotten back into the swing of things and you’re well into the New Year. I hope it’s off to a great start! As always, TIGI is here to partner with you to elevate the hairdressing industry and help you offer the very best in services and at home care to your clients and if you’re still in school, the very best education in this industry. I know it seems crazy given the weather many of us are experiencing right now, but THE BEACH IS BACK with Bed Head. This popular collection will now be available to TONI&GUY, including Totally Beachin’ Cleansing Jelly Shampoo, Totally Beachin’ Mellow After Sun Conditioner, Beach Bound Protection Spray and NEW Beach Freak Detangler Spray. We’ve put all 4 of these products through a hard-core 2 week torture test to ensure they stand up to the brightest sun, hottest heat, intense humidity, chlorine and ocean damage. Whether your clients are getting ready for a vacation, looking ahead to summer or you’re lucky enough to have beautiful weather year round, these products will keep you and your clients hair in B*!CHn’ shape! #THEBEACHISBACK Spring and Summer mean Blondes are Back, too. (okay, so thankfully for us, blondes are year ‘round) We’re thrilled to introduce 3 NEW High-lift shades for 5 levels of lift in only 35 minutes & 3 NEW Gloss and have a great Custom Blondes Collection to inspire you, as well. • 3 NEW High-Lift: 100/2, 100/21, 100/82 (previously 100/28) • 3 NEW Gloss shades: 5/07, 8/08, 9/12 Finally, the wait is over… in April, your favorite Bed Head Shampoos and Conditioners, Catwalk Oatmeal & Honey, and SFactor Smoothing Lusterizer will all be available in 1.5 Liters for use at the backbar!!! And last but not least, in April/May we will introduce our NEW Bed Head Volume Superheroes. Create volume like never before! Starting with the new FULLY LOADED Shampoo & Conditioning Jelly and create bolder, braver styles with the new BIG HEAD Volume Boosting Foam and FULL OF IT Volume Finishing Hairspray! This isn’t just any Shampoo and Conditioner, this is our most advanced volumizing technology yet! While other salon shampoos simply remove build up, this actually has UPLOADER technology which lifts the hair and gives it staying power. One of a kind volumizing conditioning technology plumps and swells hair while enabling it to absorb moisture without adding weight. Here’s to a truly remarkable 2016…#MAKEITMASSIVE All the best,
