CREATIVE RELEASE 2014 At the world release of the new TONI&GUY Classics, Zak Mascolo Creative Director of the Americas and his artistic team lead us on a journey of English precision with Italian flair, a true mix of Britalian elegance. The Classics take the iconic cutting and coloring techniques that have made the name TONI&GUY synonymous with the “Harvard of Hairdressing” to another level. This simplified approach allows the newer hairdresser to master the techniques and feel confident in satisfying their clients needs in a much faster time frame.

The Classics are the foundation of the TONI&GUY cutting and coloring system. Zak personally created each of the 11 techniques to provide the TONI&GUY student and hairdresser with the tools necessary to master their craft and build confidence as a hairdresser. Making the launch even more special, Zak was joined on stage by his family; uncles Bruno and Anthony Mascolo, aunt Pat Mascolo, cousin Yvonne Mascolo, wife Caroline Mascolo and their adorable children and next generation of Mascolo’s Fabiana, Gaetano and Luna.

Prep the hair by blow-drying, using Bed Head Superstar ‘Queen for a Day’ thickening spray. Brush the hair over to one side. Working off a natural part, take a diagonal forward to mid-recession making a large triangular shape. Separate into two strands and begin twisting the hair towards the face, crossing over away from the face. Add hair only from the underneath near the hairline and continue until you reach the end of the braid. Pull the braid apart gently to add width. Twist the end of the braid up and around and secure with hair pins to create a braided up-do.

Meet Janet Uresti. Janet has been with the company for 8 years. She is currently a stylist at the TONI&GUY Parks location in Arlington, TX and has been an instructor at both Keller and Dallas Academies. Janet has been married to her husband, Paul, for 5 years and they made the decision to adopt knowing they wanted three children. Janet and Paul soon learned they had been placed with siblings! Three beautiful little girls, ages 3, 4 and 5, pictured below. “It was put in our hearts to adopt siblings. We knew instantly that these little girls were our children. We are truly blessed” The girls love spaghetti, fruit snacks, watching Frozen, singing and playing both basketball and soccer. “TONI&GUY has been very supportive,” says Janet, “The Parks at Arlington Salon even threw us a shower! They’ve held my hand through the whole process.” Congratulations on your new beautiful family! Wishing you all the best in the new year. - From your TONI&GUY family!

At TONI&GUY we love nothing better than hearing fabulous feedback from our valued clients. We would like to highlight team members in STRUT who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to make their client feel “In The Spotlight”.

This month’s “In The Spotlight 5 Star Award” goes to: LA CANTERA SALON IN SAN ANTONIO!

I live in Dallas, Texas and had to travel to San Antonio last week to help my sister who was hospitalized. I have a hairdresser here that is “the best” in Dallas, but desperately needed a cut while I was tending to my sister. I made an appointment for cut and color at the San Antonio location. From the beginning, the customer service was excellent! My color has never looked better (Star) and my cut has never looked better (Kiki)... I am seriously considering driving to San Antonio to get my hair done every 6 weeks. Whatever you are doing to recruit great talent is working. Please give Star and Kiki a pat on the back for making me feel pretty while my sister was very ill. They are amazingly talented and wonderful people. Please let them know how much they are appreciated. Thank you , Lynne

Send your client feedback to MARKETING@TONIGUY.COM to be considered for future issues.

GETTING TO KNOW

AARON WATKINS

WE ALL HAVE OUR OWN UNIQUE APPROACH TO DOING WHAT WE DO. AARON WATKINS, WINNER OF THE 2014 TONI&GUY PHOTOGRAPHIC AWARDS IN THE MEN’S CATEGORY, TOOK SOME TIME TO GIVE US A LITTLE INSIGHT ON WHO HE IS AS A STYLIST, INSTRUCTOR & PHOTOGRAPHER. WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU DO WHEN YOU PLAN A PHOTO SHOOT?

AW: The first thing I do as a photographer is find a great model and simple location. If i can’t find a decent model then I need a great location. Then hair, makeup, and wardrobe usually follow in that order. If that doesn’t work, I turn on ‘Started from the Bottom’ by Drake to get me amped and gassed up!

HOW DO YOU FIND MODELS?

AW: Bribe them! You can’t be afraid to approach people. Allure them with examples of your previous work, offer them free services, TFP (Trade for Photos) usually works. Find attractive and interesting subjects on Instagram and message them. Find people who are extremely comfortable in front of the camera, and comfortable with themselves for that matter. Confidence combined with attitude and emotion is key.

HOW DO YOU MANAGE DOING HAIR & PHOTOGRAPHY FOR A SHOOT?

AW: I get an assistant. I need someone to help keep flyaways manageable and someone who can finish hair well. They can be the person who moves the hair around as well as being my 3rd eye.

WHEN IS YOUR FAVORITE TIME TO SHOOT?

AW: Between 4pm and 8pm on a Sunday, not only because of the quality of light outside, but this particular time is calming. Southern California is one of the most beautiful and edgier places in the US. I sometimes don’t see how people box in their creativity to one white wall in a studio, however if the model is super strong, I can be caged into a studio for an entire season!

WHAT GENRE OF MUSIC DO YOU LISTEN TO ON THE REGULAR?

AW: Old-School Hip Hop and House…or anything with a dope beat. Just a few to call out: Tribe Called Quest, Drake, the Roots, Disclosure and Black Keys.

WHAT KEEPS YOU PUSHING & MOVING FORWARD?

AW: My move to L.A. with new faces and raw street corners, nobody moves here to just chill. People are arriving here in Hollywood everyday to recreate themselves and chase their dreams. They are becoming and I will not be left behind.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

AW: Live Music, Worship Music, Nature, Venice Beach, Griffith Park, Central Park, traveling, fashion, graffiti, art, LACMA Museum, New York, Barcelona, Nigeria, and my quiet time.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START SHOOTING?

AW: Applying for the TONI&GUY Photographic Awards, I was inspired to photograph my model.

HOW DO YOU STAY DRIVEN?

AW: Now that I teach at the TONI&GUY Santa Monica Academy, doing hair and creating photos have become my creative outlet. It’s one of the few things in my life that consistently burns within. The hunger to be the best has started to become an obsession. VISIT YOUTUBE.COM/TONIGUY TO WATCH THE TUTORIAL ON THIS MEN’S UNDERCUT WITH AARON. Follow the team on Instagram. the WHITE PARTY TONI&GUY ACADEMY | TIGI CREATIVE SCHOOL GRAND OPENING We celebrated the launch of the new TONI&GUY ACADEMY | TIGI CREATIVE SCHOOL collaboration with an iconic white party. When TONI&GUY first arrived on the scene in Dallas in 1985, at the first salon on Sherry Lane the dress code for staff was all white. TONI&GUY quickly became known in the Dallas area as the white army! To celebrate the brand heritage we continued in the vein of the white army by asking all attendees to dress in white for this celebration. The grand opening also saw the unveiling of the new cobranded TONI&GUY ACADEMY | TIGI CREATIVE SCHOOL, a union that is steeped in brand heritage and brand DNA. To announce the new union, Tom Monaghan, President of TIGI along with TIGI Creative Director Anthony Mascolo and General Manager of the Americas Elisa Fischer were on hand to celebrate with Bruno Mascolo, CEO of TONI&GUY along with President Debbie Webster and Creative Director of the Americas Zak Mascolo. To round off the evening students of the new Preston Park academy wowed the audience with a fashion show that was beyond amazing!

NOTES FROM BRUNO As we come to the end of the year, I reflect on the many accomplishments we’ve had throughout the year, the most significant being the development and strengthening of the TONI&GUY culture. What is culture? Culture is everything we stand for and believe in, and I want to share this with you; the foundation of the TONI&GUY culture. TONI&GUY stands for quality in everything we do through hairdressing and our legendary Spotlight customer experience. When undertaking a job, regardless of the size, we do it with enthusiasm, energy and precision. We maintain the highest level of integrity in decision-making and always put others before profit. We want everyone to be a winner. We coach people and manage projects - I know it sounds like a cliché, but it is our reality. As we pursue our vision, we never give up; we are not afraid of trying new things. There are no mistakes, only lessons to be learned. Remember procrastinating is a disease that should be avoided at all costs. In the end, the most important thing that keeps us together is the continuous effort to improve. Maintaining a culture is the beginning, believing in our culture is progress. Working together with our culture will lead us to great success. We must always strive to be more confident and believe in ourselves. The more goals we achieve, the more confident we become. When creating your plans for the New Year, make sure you align your plans with your goals – NOT with people or things. This will result in a much happier life. Thank you to all the very incredible people that have dedicated time, energy and focus to help us accomplish so much this year and for making our culture what it is. I am grateful and honored to work with such great talent.

BRUNO MASCOLO, CEO
